The season of love has brought exciting Valentine specials with delightful surprises at the Island City Mall this coming February 14.

For food lovers, indulge in delectable menus in the lunch buffet at the Foodwalk at 10 AM and enjoy soothing acoustic music with the Jam Session band. At 4 PM, watch the Cupid's Arrow Fashion Show at the Activity Center, or have a date with teenage Boholana GMA star, Rich Asuncion, at 5 PM.

Relive the heady days of the past with the best of the 60s, 70s, and 80s music with the Versatile band live at the Activity Center, starting at 6 PM, during the dinner buffet. The band will play the greatest hits of Bee Gees, Cascades, Eagles, Toto, America, Simon & Garfunkel, LRB, and many more.

For a fine dining experience, enjoy a romantic dinner with your loved ones, or the whole family, at The Prawn Farm at the upper ground level of the mall. It offers a 14-course red carpet buffet, both for lunch and dinner, with a strawberry fountain that provides a bit of grandeur to the setting. Four rich and velvety desserts to chose from, free to all diners, will also help satisfy your palate.

Amid attempts by former OIC Governor Victor Dela Serna to question finances of City Mayor Dan Lim, the city chief executive yesterday asked the Ombudsman to investigate him.

Perhaps an unprecedented move of a public official, the mayor revealed during his weekly "Mayor's Report" yesterday that he wrote Deputy Ombudsman for the

Visayas Pelagio Apostol to initiate an investigation and determine if he committed violations regarding abuse of discretion and graft and corruption.

According to Dela Serna, "the amount of P97.6 million is just too big to be left to the discretion of any public official of the city… which has an annual budget of P304 million."

The mayor openly dared Dela Serna yesterday to file a case and prove it in court instead of engaging in a "fishing expedition".

Dela Serna has asked City Budget Officer Rosemarie Palma copies of the "Summary of Budget and Expenditure" for the year 2006, specifically what was incurred by the mayor.

In his letter to the Ombudsman, Lim called Dela Serna's inquiries as a form of "harassment" to humiliate him by way of a public trial.

Police are trying to convince five persons to testify on the murder of former rebel leader Ronald Sendrijas as Gov. Erico Aumentado offers anew a reward of P50,000 for the arrest of those responsible for the killing.

Tagged by activist groups as another political killing perpetrated by the military, provincial police director SSupt. Edgardo Ingking stressed on Friday's Local Peace Forum that "no evidence" would indicate that the shooting of Sendrijas along a busy highway, is politically motivated.

Ingking however admitted difficulties in solving the incident as the City PNP have not yet identified the perpetrators.

At least five fast ferries operated by three competing firms are no longer allowed night trips by the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina).

The five vessels failed to comply with a Marina requirement to install night vision equipment vital for night-time navigation.

Marina regional director Glenn Cabanez issued the restriction amid investigations into the collision of MV Oceanjet 3 and ASC Valerie near the Tagbilaran City Port Saturday night last week.

Cabanez based his order on a report made by a Marina inspecting team which found that vessels of Ocean Fast Ferries Inc. (Oceanjet), Supercat Fast Ferry Corporation and Weesam Express do not have "functional night vision equipment".

I wish to add this perspective. Kadtong arang-arangan gyud nga maka-afford to buy something kadto mang naa sa gawas sa nasud. Let's just face this fact. Maglisud atong mga tindera ug tricycle driver mo-avail ug SPA or mosulod ug parlor kay magpakorte or magpabeauty.

Asa man ka mag-paadvertise? sa Internet. Lahi na ang dagan sa kalibutan karon. Let's just face it. The New York Times slashed its number of printed copies in circulation into half after they realized that everything is in digital paper.

The New York Times has decided to devote its core business in Online Subscription. Newspapers in the U.S. are in crisis today because of the invasion of the Internet. Hundreds of newspaper owners had abandoned the business and decided to do something else. And this is the trend worldwide.

People who use the Internet (living in the Philippines or abroad) are more likely those who can afford. Mao ni sila ang naay purohan nga naay "buying power", if I may borrow an economic term. This is just the reality.

Health and Food / Tea for relaxation and rejuvenation
February 12, 2008, 12:16:59 AM
Press Release sent to Tubag Bohol

Green tea’s centuries-old reputation as a naturally-beneficial and perfectly-balanced drink is fast making its way to the forefront of today’s health trend.

Since ancient times, the Chinese have been using green tea to cure anything from headache to depression. One ancient Chinese proverb even states, “better to be deprived of food for three days, than tea for one.”

In this age of fitness and form, health-conscious Generation X has brought this beverage back in the limelight, and its rising popularity is attributed to its abundance of natural ingredients, which are beneficial to the body: antioxidants, as well as a variety of vitamins and minerals. The presence of both caffeine and theanine makes it the drink with “perfect balance.”

Green tea’s natural, though minimal, caffeine content helps increase alertness and improve concentration. By gently stimulating the heart and the respiratory system, green tea assists in bringing more oxygen to the brain, keeping drinkers on their toes. Green tea has one of the lowest caffeine levels among all tea types.

Theanine combats stress, tension and anxiety without inducing drowsiness, giving the drinker a sense of calm and “relaxed alertness.” Researchers have also stated that when theanine is consumed on a regular basis, it can diminish Pre Menstrual Syndrome and lower the blood pressure.

C2 Cool & Clean Green Tea is an invigorating, convenient, and contemporary adaptation of this thousand-year old, healthy drink.

Delicately brewed from fresh green tea leaves, Camellia  sinensis, C2 captures the Yin and Yang of nature with its soothing and relaxing component, coupled with a mild rejuvenating element that restores vitality. C2 also reflects the dynamic lifestyle of the cyber age: it’s best taken chilled, making it a refreshing drink any time of the day; it offers several delectable flavors; and its PET bottle with re-sealable cap makes it handy to carry around.

C2, manufactured by Universal Robina Corporation (URC), is available nationwide in flavors that offer a soothing yet stimulating drinking experience: Plain Green Tea, Lemon, Apple, Peach, Strawberry, Kiwi, Lychee, and Forest Fruits. Sugar-free variants are also available in Green Tea, Apple and Lemon.

Kim Sjostrom wanted a real-life version of the film "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," which played in the background as friends fixed her hair and makeup before her own marriage ceremony.

But less than an hour after she and Teddy Efkarpides were wed, Sjostrom crumpled in her husband's arms during a Greek song that means "Love Me."

At 36, Sjostrom was dead from heart disease.

The wedding had became a project at Davie Elementary School, where Sjostrom taught first grade. Fellow teachers provided the wedding gown, the flowers and decorations. One of them, an ordained minister, performed the ceremony.

There will be series of tips and secrets that I will be offering FOR FREE to business owners or to anyone who loves wacky ideas and entrepreneurship. It's all up to you how you will use the concept and apply it here in Tubag Bohol.

If you advertise in newspaper today, you will pay P0,000 (thousands of pesos) plus for a full-page ad. Your ad won't be seen all over the world since only news stories are posted in news websites. Newspapers would usually print 1,000 copies per Sunday. Printing 5,000 copies means a huge profit loss due to high cost of paper, ink, machine maintenance, labor and overhead costs.

Tubag Bohol captures nearly .4 million page views every month. In January alone, Tubag Bohol was viewed 473,455 times. See our stats here for more details: http://tubagbohol.mikeligalig.com/index.php?action=stats

How will you utilize that stat? Well, publish your ads (text or photos) in Tubag Bohol Classifieds or in Buy and Sell section. It's unlimited. It's ABSOLUTELY FREE.

I guess you don't need to pay thousands of pesos and you're ad is no longer read after Sunday.

In Tubag Bohol, your ad will never disappear. (ayaw lang pabadlong...) It will be seen worldwide 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. And it's WITHOUT COST for your part.

Isn't that nice?

Now, will you tell your friends about this benefit?

He was busted for not paying for a small package of donuts, and now he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Friday in court, Robert Fassbender’s attorney, Michael Webb, tried to get the charges dropped before having to go to trial.

But the District Attorney’s Office plans to prosecute the case to the hilt, even if it means life in prison for Fassbender under California’s controversial three strikes law.

"I just hate to think that he's going to have to do the rest of his life in prison, but then that means he'll die in there and I don't want that,” said his mother, Marceline Fassbender.

(Reuters.com and Yahoo.com) - Retired hospital porter Steve Smith, who is suffering from a potentially fatal heart defect, won almost 19 million pounds ($38 million) on Britain's National Lottery -- but said he would give it all up if he could spend a few more years living with his wife Ida.

"I have a one in 10 chance of living. It's like a ticking time bomb," said the 58-year-old Smith, enjoying a bittersweet glass of celebratory champagne with his wife Ida.

Smith, who has an aortic aneurysm, told reporters when collecting his check: "It's Ida I worry for, it's leaving her behind. I would give all that back if I am allowed to still be with her because there are no shops in the cemetery are there?"

Jagna - Bohol / Fish Stalls in Jagna Market Empty
February 09, 2008, 12:11:17 PM
Written by Joe Espiritu
Columnist
Bohol Sunday Post

The fish stalls in Jagna Market practically bare. The double whammy of gusty northeasterlies and moonlit nights contribute to the scarcity of local fish supply. The few pieces found are striped tuna and dogtooth tuna or bodlis and bangkulisan. The price is over a hundred pesos a kilo. Even the lowly round bodied scad locally known as tabudlos, galonggong or GG in Metro Manila is of that price level. Freshwater fishes like the bangos and tilapia are offered to the people who rely upon marine products for their protein needs. What Jagna needs is the entry of fish and fish products from all over Bohol.

Jagna municipal waters cannot supply fish and marine products to the Jagna demand. The reef strands of the more than ten kilometers of Jagna shoreline are over fished. In areas where there are no fish sanctuaries, fishermen from upland barangays using double nets, a combination of layers of large and fine meshed nets, take turns in operating, harvesting even trash fish.

Bangos fry catchers using sudsuds or hand pushed, floating triangular fry scoop nets, contributes to the destruction of fish fry. When the bangis fry is separated from the rest of the catch, the remainder is dumped on the sand instead of returning them to the sea. An ordinance sponsored by Kagawad Alberto Café, prohibiting the dumping of rejected fry was passed by the Sangguniang Bayan but it is more honored in breach rather than by enforcement.

However, even with careful fish conservation practices observed, the local, near shore fish supply cannot cope up with the Jagna market demand. Reef strands are too small to offer fishing grounds that could afford the fishermen decent living.

Pelagic near shore fishes like anchovies or bolinao no longer come to Jagna Sardines and its subspecies like the hawohawo, mangsi and tigi are gone. The lantern fish or gabon has disappeared decades ago.

Most of our fishermen became blue water fishers. Then, blue water fishing is not only seasonal but is also dependent upon good weather. The mainstay of deepwater fishing was the flying fish or bangsi. This fish, once abundant that its roe or bihod is washed ashore, is seldom bought outside Bohol. Indiscriminate and over fishing contributed to its scarcity.

Pelagic deep-sea fishes like the tunas, bonitos and mackerels are in trouble. Those fishes cannot stop moving if they are to live. With immovable gill flaps, seawater cannot flow through their gills if they stop. They will die of oxygen starvation if their blood rich dark flesh in their sides had not stored enough for short stops. .

Their constant motion needs a higher metabolism, which also generates excess heat. Those fishes need water temperatures in the vicinity of 25 to 27 degrees centigrade. Global warming might make them seek cooler waters away from Jagna waters.

Repealing the Law of Supply and Demand will be like repealing the Law of Gravity.

Impossible. The best we can do is encourage people to enter into backyard gardening, raising livestock like poultry, pigs, goats -m anything that moves that could be eaten. This is to wean the people away from dependency of fish and fish products. But this is easier said than done. Our people are not used to invest time money and effort to produce. They only harvest. Fishing is a form of harvesting. If fishing does not give them dividends, they tighten their belts and wait for better days.

General Topic / Lunar Calendar and the Year of the Rat
February 09, 2008, 12:03:02 PM
By Joe Espiritu
Columnist
Bohol Sunday Post

ABOUT THE MIDDLE OF THIS WEEK WILL BE FIRST NEW MOON AFTER January.

This will be the start of the lunar calendar year, the New Year of the Chinese and all those who had been influenced by the Chinese culture. This year, the Chinese zodiac if one may call it that, will be the turn of the rat. Some prefer to call it the Year of the Mouse for the sake of delicacy. The mouse is that lovable, big eared rodent from which the cartoon character Mickey Mouse is derived. However, though cute and lovable, the mouse is too timid to suit the go-getters that most prefer the rat, the pointed snout and scaly tailed denizen of sewers, though disreputable, is a tough and tried survivor. So rat it is.

The primitives based their reckoning on events important or memorable to them. Once a native Mindanaoan was asked when her son was born. The answer was; when the big bakan tree, which has been standing for ages before, fell down.

They had no calendar of sorts. When man invented agriculture, he found out that even those in the tropics must be in tune with the seasons, to realize a good harvest. Anyone who plants at the wrong time may have his crops destroyed because seasonal storms had blown down the grains and trees before the crop could be harvested. Or it he will plant in some inopportune time, the seasonal drought set in before the crop could bear fruit.

In Egypt and Mesopotamia, priests, the star gazers or astronomers, who were the erudite men at that time noticed that the life giving waters of the Tigris-Euphrates or the Nile floods at the time of the year when the Sirius or Dog Star is high in the heavens. At that time, a specific number of days passed between the appearances of the Dog Star. And since the days are solar divisions, the solar calendar was adopted. The reckoning by solar calendar made its way to the Romans and later to the rest of the western world.

The Chinese and some Middle Eastern culture, adhere to the lunar calendar. It could be that their skies are not always clear that they have to reckon their time according to the phases of the moon, which presence could be detected even in most cloudy nights. Their month starts from the sight of the new moon until the next new moon is sighted. However, the intervals between the new moons are lesser by a day or two each month in the solar calendar. The western solar calendar does not coincide with the eastern lunar calendar. To keep in time with the seasons and with the solar year, an intercalary month is added to the lunar calendar. Thus, the lunar year ends and begins in February.

One particular event that is influenced by the solar and lunar year is Easter Sunday. Jesus, a Jew, was crucified after He celebrated the Feast of the Passover. On a Friday. According to Hebrew tradition the observance of the Passover is on the first full moon after the vernal or spring equinox, which is on March 21. That means must come first before the Passover, a full moon. However, the full moon may no come on a Friday so the Church devised a formula to set the date for the Holy Friday of each year.

Feng shui, a set of rituals practiced by the Chinese on their New Year could have had religious connotations. Athletic clubs perform lion and dragon dances. Some burn the last years' pictures of their household gods to be replaced by new ones.

Some give sticky rice cakes or tikoy as gifts. Some stock round shaped sweet tasting fruits on their altars for good luck. To scare away evil spirits and the bad luck they bring, firecrackers are exploded. The louder the blast the better.

The Chinese New Year is never complete without firecrackers. Despite the dangers of losing one fingers or any parts of the body, the practice must go on or else experience bad luck the whole year round. The tradition is so deeply rooted that it could not be altered or modified. Even if there might be a way to chase away evil spirits without losing life or limb it will be not as exiting a exploding a firecracker.

Whatever may come let us greet our Chinese with Kong Hey Fat Tsoy or Kong Xi Fa Choy or what ever sounds that way. - www.boholsundaypost.net

Jagna - Bohol / Sustainable Food Production in Jagna
February 09, 2008, 11:55:12 AM
By Gregorio Tavera
Bohol Sunday Post

In the five-day strategic planning workshop, the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) of Jagna drafted a five-year Medium-Term Agricultural Development Plan that focuses on organic agriculture in an effort to attain sustainable food production at the Bohol Agricultural Promotion Center (BAPC) in Dao, Tagbilaran City on January 28 to February 1.

This is in consonance with the thrusts of the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Jagna.

The activity specifically aims to develop doable strategies to address top priority issues and lay out specific actions and timelines for implementing such strategies.
During the opening program, Jagna Municipal Agriculture Officer (MAO) Camilo Rizano recognized the participants.

At least 85 participants, particularly from the agricultural barangays were invited to take part on the said activity. These included the 28 barangay captains and the chairpersons of the different committees on agriculture of the barangays.

Mayor Exuperio Lloren personally thanked the participants for their splendid attitude in learning additional know-how while on the job for the improvement of the agriculture sector in the grassroots.

Loay - Bohol / Mayor Imboy of Loay in Constant Struggle?
February 09, 2008, 11:50:58 AM
By Bohol Sunday Post

For Mayor Rosemarie "May" Imboy, being mayor of Loay town is a constant struggle to make a difference.

As if being the first lady mayor is not enough. Mayor Imboy rode on the wealth and popularity of the Lim pedigree whose family is in shipping, cable TV, heavy equipment leadership, general merchandizing, hotel and resorts and lately mining.

Born in comfort and luxury, Mayor May, the youngest in a brood of five, can afford to splurge in wild abandon if she so wishes and threw all cautions to the wind. Unlike her poor brethren in Loay, the worry of where to get the next meal is not found in her social vocabulary.

But she is no spoiled brat. Reared in an atmosphere of utmost religiosity, it must be this kind of upbringing that she endeared to the hearts and minds of every Loaynon.

It is to the uninitiated. But those familiar with the language of call centers, and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), medical transcription in BPO lingo is just another pedestrian term for medical secretary in the 21st century.

In Cebu and Manila, the next big thing in call center courses is the MT or Medical Transcription.

Since it is a new calling, the manpower requirement for MTs abroad increased considerably, so much so that it has become a course of choice in the call center business.

It is this big demand for MTs that prompted a group of Boholano entrepreneurs to establish a training school for MTs with program fees that fit the budget of the mainstream market.

Thus, the Bohol Powerhouse Scholastics, Inc. (BPSI) was born.

Located in downtown Tagbilaran City, BPSI recently opened its doors to prospective MT enrollees. With the end in view of providing MT courses even to high school graduates or those who want to pursue an MT profession even those who have not earned credits in higher education. The BPSI Medical Transcription training program was launched recently at their training center at Ramvil Building, CPG Avenue.

In a statement, Bohol Powerhouse Scholastics, Inc. Director Danny C. Nazareno, MA said that the Province of Bohol has to be provided with a good training center for MTs, especially that MT companies are now looking at Central Visayas, as one of their preferred sites for operations.

Nazareno, together with a group of medical doctors, nurses and some businessmen, has started to set up the training facility early last month, with training courses pegged at as low as P5,000.

Medical Transcription (MT) outsourcing service is the process of converting voice dictation (typically either cassette or digital forms) into a permanent written record utilizing word processing equipment and software.

Although a Medical Transcription job highly requires a medical background most especially in physiology and anatomy and good grammar skills, the BPSI training modules are also designed for students who do not have medical background.

This service developed after the United States government amended the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) under the administration of then US President Bill Clinton in 1996.

This law ensures the continuity of healthcare coverage for individuals changing jobs and includes a provision that impacts on the management of health information, seeks to simplify the administration of health care insurance, and also aims to combat waste, fraud and abuse in health insurance and healthcare.

The Philippines, which is known for good English speakers, is one of the targets for American hospitals and clinics for MT outsourcing.

"As the demand for medical transcriptionists continues to accelerate, the need for globally competent MTs arises. Competence cannot be achieved overnight. It requires extensive training and experience. BPSI medical transcription career training program provides the level of training and program format that suits every enrollee's pace. Our support staff is composed of licensed physicians, highly qualified medical transcriptionists and language specialists, who are qualified to deliver quality medical transcription training", Nazareno emphasized.

This is also in support to the poverty alleviation program of the provincial government of Bohol through job creation. Governor Erico Aumentado has been bullish about providing job opportunities to Boholanos through ecotourism, agriculture and recently the Information Technology (IT) industry.

Boholanos, after at least three months of MT training, can now work at home as medical transcriptionists. Working at home would be more lucrative although the search for clients online is challenging and sometimes tricky. An MT graduate can also work in production units in Cebu and nearby areas. Most call centers now in Cebu have accepted MT outsourcing projects.

Average rate is at $0.12 per line. Above average experienced MTs who are able to do 500 lines in a regular day would mean P2,700 a day just by working at home.

An estimated 6,700 hospitals, clinics, HMOs are still in the process of complying HIPAA law in the US. This has brought a huge opportunity for Filipinos to capture the multi million dollar outsourcing jobs that can even be done at home.

Even a well-guarded facility like the Tagbilaran City airport is no longer safe to thieves.

The latest case of thievery in this city was the latest addition to the growing list of theft cases, most of them still unsolved.

The break-in of the city airport came at a time when Tagbilaran was tagged by a local paper as crime city in reference to the series of killings, snatchings and robberies.

In trying to calm a frightened citizenry, City mayor Dan Lim assured residents that the local police were on top of the situation.

"The crime situation is not as critical as many of our critics would like to portray," the city mayor declared in an interview over Station DYTR.

But he warned all those responsible for giving a black mark to the good image of the city to behave before any drastic action will be carried out.

AIRPORT THEFT

The latest of several theft cases in this city involved the loss to burglars of runway equipment that included two isolation transformers of Pre-session Approach Path Indicator (PAPI); six aluminum parts and fixtures of threshold lights at Runway 17; six isolation transformers of Runway 17's threshold lights; eight runway lights fixtures; and 34 isolation transformers of runway lights.

In carting away the runway lights, the thieves broke their glass covers.

In an incident report to Francis Diez, officer-in-charge, Electromechanical Section of the Air Navigation Service, Air Transportation Office (ATO), Antonio Albit of ATO-Tagbilaran, reported the theft after he learned that the runway lights were no longer functioning as hey used to be. It was discovered when the PAPI 17 was switched on to check if they were still operational.

There was no mention how much the damage in pesos per incident report.
The same report was noted by Edgar Solis, airport manager.

But a separate police blotter indicated the cost of the stolen runway lights and transformers which ran to more than P2 million.

According to the same incident report, the Constant Current Regulator or CCR indicated an open circuit at PAPI 17, after immediately switching it off.

In an interview with Solis over Station DYTR, he denied insinuations that laxity of the guards was a factor in the loss of the airport equipment.

The security requirement of the airport is provided by the Cebu-based Sikatuna Security Agency.

Reports reaching the Post indicated that the reason why the security guards appeared to be remiss in their duties to secure the airport from break-ins was that they were not paid on time.

A security guard belonging to the agency admitted that their salaries were sometime delayed up to 15 days. This was however denied by Solis.

As this developed, Cong. Edgar Chatto chair of the House committee on tourism sought for an immediate investigation. Part of Chatto's budget was used to purchase the stolen runway items.

I never returned to the website. I wasn't ready to pay 12 dollars for my continued existence in the site. My account will be deleted if I don't pay 12 dollars as an annual membership. I checked the features of the site and its capabilities - I wasn't satisfied how the site works.

Five floating restaurants operating at the Loboc River Cruise could not carry out bookings starting this morning after they were ordered grounded by the Philippine Coast Guard.

Of the 18, five floating restaurants were found "unfit" to travel after an inspection team checked the boats twice yesterday and found that their hulls were dilapidated and the steel frames at the boat were weak.

"We could not take the risk," Coast Guard commander William Isaga told the Chronicle after announcing last night his order to immediately ground the five floating restaurants, namely, RiverCruise 3, 6, 4, Riverview 1 and Longriver 1.

The action of the Coast Guard came even as volumes of tourists are expected to arrive here for the Chinese New Year. He said "the more we will protect the tourists since they are expected to jam the cruise this weekend, being the Chinese New Year."

He informed the Provincial Tourism Council of his order after the PTC requested that the boats be re-inspected after an earlier order was supposed to be issued last Monday. Isaga accepted the PTC's request but later on issued his final order that declared the five boats "unsafe to travel," thus, "to be grounded starting today."

The three Boholano congressmen joined in the orchestrated ouster move against Jose de Venecia, Jr as House Speaker in a marathon session.

Amomg the three solons, only newcomer Rep. Adam Jala (third district) articulated on the floor his stand for voting for the ouster of De Venecia. Last termers Rep. Edgar Chatto and Rep. Roberto Cajes manifested their "yes" vote calling for the ouster, but did not state their reasons during the nationally televised session yesterday.

In his statement, Jala said after "seven months as congressman, he noticed the non-efficient delivery of projects under the De Venecia leadership." He raised the question on transparency as well.

Voting yes to the ouster move, means standing what will do better in the House of Representatives, Jala said. The solon succeeded his father, ex-Rep. Eladio Jala.

The three Bohol solons, under Lakas, were political allies of de Venecia and with Pres. Arroyo as well. However, with the rift between the House Speaker and the Palace, they have to make a choice during yesterday's marathon session.

The preliminary investigation of the sea accident involving a passenger fast craft vessel and a barge awaits the statement of the ship captain of M/V Ocean Jet 3 until yesterday afternoon.

PCG Bohol Station Commander William Isaga said that without the statement of the vessel's ship captain, he could not submit his initial findings and recommendations to the Special Board of Marine Inquiry in Cebu City which will conduct the investigation.

Isaga said that patron Emmanuel Corpus of barge "ASC Valerie" in his sworn statement claimed that there were two lights at the barge since one of its two generators was operating while they were on anchorage at the inner anchorage area. Their position, Corpus said, was cleared by the Harbor Pilot awaiting availability of a berthing space at the Tagbilaran City Port.

Corpus likewise said that eight crew members who were atop the barge saw the approaching Ocean Jet 3, and in fact, waved a flashlight to further alert the ship captain. However, they noticed that the vessel was still on a speed beyond the allowable 8 knots, which is the prescribed speed as a vessel approaches a port.

For his part, Renato Alforque, of M/T Wilbert, a tugboat, stated in his sworn statement that his boat was no longer at the accident site when Ocean Jet 3 hit the barge since he already docked to the pier in order to meet the consignee of the sand and gravel loaded at the barge from Leyte.

Dead for sixty-four days already, unburied British national George William Dawson was finally “freed” from funeral debt and laid to his eternal rest at Dampas cemetery here Friday afternoon.

His burial came exactly after two months and four days since his death last November 28, 2007. His burial finally relieved his young Filipina fiancée of long, unspeakable grief.

Dawson’s would-have-been-wife, Jeaneth Piquero of Candijay, Bohol, Philippines witnessed in deep silence a priest’s officiating of the last rite to his burial in a land half-a-planet from his foreign home.

Piquero, who is just 18, and his family profoundly thanked Rep. Edgar Chatto and Rep. Adam Relson Jala for facilitating the release of Dawson’s cadaver from the Coop Funeral Homes and its burial.

Dawson died of diabetic mellitus last November 28---when Christmastime was ushered in--- after weeks of costly confinement in a local hospital.

His cadaver could not be released from the funeral parlor unless the fees for embalming and other services would be settled.

Dawson’s remains had thus been held at the funeral home, the dead incurring an accumulated debt of over P110,000.

Piquero had to e-mail to Dawson’s family in the United Kingdom for the possible transport of his remains back home or burial here in Tagbilaran City.

The grieving girl was outrightly refused assistance.

With her mother, Piquero sought assistance from the local media, which led them to Chatto.

Chatto had his men in Manila office personally bringing the case of the decomposing Dawson to the British Embassy.

There, it was found out that Dawson had a dual citizenship as a British and at the same time an American.

This hindered his surviving fiancée from getting any assistance from either embassy for the disposal of Dawson’s corpse.

The First District congressman coordinated with the office of Rep. Jala to grant the dead peace.

Piquero who hails from Candijay is a constituent of Cong. Jala’s district.

She was personally accompanied by Chatto’s staff Anthony Damalerio to Jala’s father, ex-Rep. Eladio Jala, on Tuesday since the young Jala was in Manila.

The two solons offered as guarantors for the release of the foreigner’s remains from the funeral home while their aids would still be processed thru the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Piquero and her family also thanked the Church-provided caretaker of the Dampas cemetery who coordinated with barangay captain Fredison Ingles.

Dawson and Piquero stayed together for about eight months in Booy here and planned their marriage until his death did them part. - theboholstandard.com

My reflection for today:

I was reading the Bangkok Post and I came across an article on the aggressive, relentless tourism campaign of the Thai Government. The Tourism Authority of Thailand says it will spend millions of baht on online advertising. The government has been creating a cornucopia of websites. Each website focuses on one sector of the tourism industry. The Thai Government realized that there is no other more effective way to promote Thailand but to tap the power of the Internet.

Today Thailand is enjoying 11.7 million visitors a year and it expects to increase that figure to 13 million by the end of this year.

About 2.8 million foreign travelers visited the Philippines in 2006. The number is one of the lowest in Asia.

If you go to any Philippine government website, let alone the Philippine Tourism website, you'd just be disappointed.

I am certain that you'd agree with me that there are thousands, if not millions, of places in the Philippines that are unique to our islands and that they can never be compared to anywhere else in this planet.

Unless our government realizes the enormous power of the Internet, the beauty of our country would just be like a beautiful lady passing in a black night. Unnoticed.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) will embark this year on a massive tourism campaign to boost further tourist arrivals in the country, Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said.

Durano outlined his agency’s plans for 2008 during this week’s installment of “The Cabinet Speaks,” a radio and television program of the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) aired over government TV station NBN-4.

He said the DOT will concentrate on three key factors, namely 1) the volume of tourist arrivals, 2) the length of stay of the tourists in the country, and 3) their average daily spending while in the Philippines.

Durano has projected tourist arrivals to increase by eight to 10 percent “year on year.”

Based on this projection, about three million more tourists are expected to visit the country this year, he said. Last year, the three million tourists who visited the country contributed $4.88-billion to the economy.

Philippine Daily News / Pinay Maltreated in Dubai
February 07, 2008, 09:16:06 PM
From a blogspot post named "Anonymous"

I am a Western expat living in an upmarket block in Dubai. Recently I was approached in the garden by a young filipina woman who tearfully told me:

She arrived four months ago to work for a Mid-Eastern couple with two children. They do not give her any days off and lock her inside. She is allowed out for about two hours a week to watch the children at play in the communal garden. They watch from the balcony to see that she does not speak to anybody. They never pay her, claiming they are holding her salary for payment when her contract expires after one year. They have confiscated her papers and cellphone and she is not allowed to make any calls. She is forbidden to talk to anybody (hence her discussion with me was in a toilet). They feed her scraps from the table and she is losing weight. They do not beat her or molest her.

The woman has children at home and would at least like to call them occasionally and she believes they are desperate for her to send money.
What can she do?

February 06, 2008, 10:50:39 PM
If you think Pizza Hut is a dine-in place just for those special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries or job promotions, it’s latest “Super Panalo P99 Value Meals” will totally change this mindset!

Introducing Pizza Hut’s “Super Panalo” 99 Value Meals for only P99 (all â€"you- pay- price) , you get a complete deal â€" Pizza Hut’s high quality food and service.  A  choice of pizza, pasta or rice meals, soup or salad, and a Pepsi drink.

“Super Panalo” Value Meals goes beyond individual meals by also offering set meals for 2 and set meals for 4.  A built-in “mix and match” combination among 5 pizza variants, 2 pasta variants, and 3 rice meals makes it more exciting.  This gives you all the reasons to make “Pizza Hut” a daily habit with family and friends.

To launch this campaign, Pizza Hut’s latest TV commercial features two friends, pleasantly surprised with their bill for only P99 (all-you pay ), that end up each one of them insisting to pay for the bill.  However, Pizza Hut’s main endorser, popular actor, Diether Ocampo who appeared as a regular customer, comes in to the rescue  and volunteers to pay for the bill.  On its own, its comical TV commercial is a treat!

Some 120 Boholanos recruited as welders at the Hanjin Shipyard in Subic are complaining of unjust pay and are planning to walk out of their jobs to return home.

Twenty-one of the said workers have already returned here yesterday, a week after they were sent to Subic through the Bohol Employment and Placement Office (BEPO).

The BEPO office recruited 152 skilled Boholano workers for Hanjin Heavy Industries Ltd. which set up one of the country’s biggest dry docks at the Subic Bay Freeport Redondo Bay.

One of the recruits, working as a machine shop operator, spoke with the Chronicle by condition of anonymity, disclosing that the 120 welders were not informed by the BEPO of deductions on their P150 per day salary.

According to the source, welders have to undergo one month training at the shipyard at a daily rate of P150 which includes food allowance.

While under trainee, they were allegedly promised free board and lodging by Hanjin when they applied for employment at BEPO.

Talk of the Town / Tagbilaran Now A Crime City?
February 06, 2008, 09:37:52 PM
By Ric V. Obedencio

The label that this city is a “crime city” following recent shooting incidents was taken as a challenge by City Mayor Dan Lim.

Although he found no basis on such "tagline,” the mayor said in his weekly Mayor’s Report over dyRD yesterday that he takes it as a challenge because it gives him the opportunity to exert more effort in the fight against criminalities.

The apprehension that Tagbilaran has turned into a “crime city” surfaced after residents were alarmed on at least six shooting incidents and several burglaries which started the New Year. All cases remain unsolved, including the 7th shooting incident last Monday.

Even before the outfall of the city’s drainage system can be completed, the lot owner of the controversial project has vowed to close it down if the city government will not disconnect sewer connections coming from households and business establishments.

The statement was made by former OIC Gov. Victor dela Serna, who owns the lot where the drainage outfall tunnel is dug.

This even as City Mayor Dan Lim declared a wastewater treatment plant will be built in the area.
As recommended by the city’s environmental consultant, Engr. Cecil Corloncito, an equalization pond will also be constructed while the multi-million water treatment facility is still to be set up.

Corloncito, an international consultant on environment, with clients in the Middle East and Australia, said the water treatment facility can be built in 9 months if the bidding process can be completed in the next three months.

The cultural ties between China and the Philippines were strengthened with the visit of a well-known Chinese children’s choir to perform back-to-back with the world champion Loboc Children’s Choir last Friday at the Bohol Children’s Palace, a new intertainment venue donated by businessman-philanthropist Am-bassador Carlos Chan in Loboc town.

The Little Companion Art Troupe that the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation under Chairman Lu Ping and the Loboc Children’s Choir were one in singing the Filipino folk song Kaming Magmamani and the popular Chinese song translated as Smiles and Songs for the finale.

Gov. Erico Aumentado expressed deep appreciation for retired statesman Lu who had negotiated for the return of Hong Kong from Great Britain back to China for fulfilling his promise of bringing the art troupe here during their meeting in Shanghai in 2006.

Aumentado also thanked Ambassador Carlos Chan of Oishi fame who arranged the cultural visit. Philanthropist Chan is the Philippines’ special envoy to China and benefactor of the Loboc Children’s Choir, and Loboc town itself.

Chan donated Bohol the construction and state-of-the-art light and sound equipment for the Bohol Children’s Palace.

On top of the Loboc choir’s tours abroad, Chan also gave them international exposure by featuring them humming the Oishi jingle with footages of Bohol’s tourist spots as they endorsed Oishi products in television and print ads aired and published all across China.

Cockfighting aficionados now have no choice but to indulge in their favorite “sport” only on Sundays, legal holidays and, during fiestas, up to three days.

This after the Supreme Court Second Division upheld the decision of the Court of Appeals (CA) that had also upheld the decision of the Regional Trial Court of Bohol limiting the occasions of holding cockfighting to such days only.

Gov. Erico Aumentado announced the Supreme Court decision Friday during his weekly radio program “The Governor Reports”.

In a letter to the litigants and their lawyers dated January 23, 2008, Assistant Clerk of Court Ma. Luisa Laurea quoted the resolution of the High Tribunal dated December 5, 2007 in G.R. No. 176004.

Considering the allegations, issues and arguments adduced in the petition for review on certiorari, the Court resolves to deny the petition for failure to sufficiently show any reversible error in the assailed judgment to warrant the exercise of this Court’s discretionary appellate jurisdiction, she wrote.

The case stemmed from Aumentado’s issuance of Executive Order No. 2 strictly implementing Presidential Decree No. 449.

Having received complaints from parents and school authorities that their children or students skip classes to go to the cockpits in order to earn a few “quick bucks” as motorcycle watch boys â€" or even maciador or bet callers, he issued the order.

February 06, 2008, 09:03:10 PM
"Have faith in God," Jesus answered. "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours."

At least 27 people have been killed and dozens injured by violent tornadoes in four southern US states.

The twisters hit Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky at the end of a day of Super Tuesday nominating votes for November's presidential election.

A huge fire erupted at a natural gas pumping station in Tennessee that may have been damaged by the storms.

In the same state, students were trapped under rubble in their dormitory after a tornado made the roof cave in.

The US National Weather Service said at least six tornadoes had touched down in the 100 miles (160km) between Jackson and Oxford, Mississippi.

One hundred fifty high school students from seven schools in the Visayas came to Cam Karis in Casate, Ubay along the eastern coast of Bohol to find ways and means to get out of poverty and rally for a stronger and more productive Philippine Republic.

These high school students are inspired not by a new ideology but by the pure Word of God being taught to them by Missionary-Evangelist Archil Lorelei Daugherty who is founder and director of the Philippines Sunbeam Children’s Ministries, Inc. (PSCMI).

The youth campers came from Camambugan National High School (CNHS) in Ubay; Sevilla National High School (SNHS) in Sevilla; Bohol Institute of Technology (BIT), Dr. Cecilio Putong National High School (DCPNHS); Mansasa High School (MHS) in Tagbilaran City; and Placido L. Senor Memorial High School (PLSMHS) and Naga National High School (NHS) in Naga, Cebu.

According to Missionary Daugherty, the youth campers are exposed to different activities that help them examine their innermost being, evaluate their present lifestyle, assess their way of doing things, and encourage them to replace old habits with new ones that bring them to a higher level of thinking and decision-making.

Helping her run the youth camp for 72 students in Level 1 is her God-given Sunbeam Mission team composed of 22 year old John Maynard Lirazan as Youth Camp director and seven counselos namely, Jun and Nessie Carnice, Dolly Lirazan, Elisa Barbon, Aubrey Marie Barbon, Janette Romero, Meluna Marquez, and Concepcion Yugo. Missionary Daugherty who previously taught the 85 student-campers, organized and handled Level 2 with assistance from Cory Verge, Greg Reusora, Jun Tabada and Gerry Guanzon as speakers and counselors.

Philippine Laws / Pinoyism
February 05, 2008, 09:33:50 PM
By Juan L. Mercado
Columnist
The Philippine Daily Inquirer

(“Like the classics, things irresistibly Pinoy mark us for life,” the unsigned e-mail said “They're the indelible stamp of our identity and celebrate the good in us … and the infinite possibilities we are all capable of.”  Here are some.  Recognize any? - JLM. )

Filipinas: They make the best friends, lovers, wives. Too bad you can't say the same for Filipinos.   Filipinos. OK, maybe they're bolero with an occasional streak of generic infidelity. But they know how to make a woman feel like one.

Cockfighting. Filipino men love it more than their wives (sometimes). Midnight madness, weekend sales, bangketas and baratillos. It's retail therapy at its best. Filipinos brave traffic and human deluge to nail a bargain.

Style. Something we often prefer over substance. But every Filipino claims it as a birthright. Unbridled optimism. Why we rank so low on the suicide scale.  Catholicism. What fun would sin be without guilt? Jesus Christ is firmly planted on Philippine soil.

Filipino Christmas. The world's longest holiday season. A perfect excuse to mix feasting, gift-giving and music and wrap it up with religion. All Saints' Day. In honoring our dead, we also prove that we know how to live.  Santacruzan. More than just a beauty contest, this one has religious overtones, a tableau of St. Helena's and Constantine's search for the Cross that seamlessly blends piety, pageantry and faith.

Bahala na. We cope with uncertainty by embracing it, and are thus enabled to play life by ear.. English. Whether carabao or Arr-neoww-accented, it doubles our chances in the global marketplace.

Kuwan, ano. At a loss for words? Try  these and marvel at how Pinoys understand exactly what you want.  Honorifics and courteous titles: Kuya, ate, diko, ditse, ineng, totoy, Ingkong, Aling, Mang, etc. No exact English translation, but these words connote respect, deference and the value placed on kinship. "Sayang!" "Naman!"  "Ano ba!" "Pala." Expressions that defy translation but wring out feelings genuinely Pinoy.

Pinoy humor:  If you're api and you know it, crack a joke. Nothing personal, really. Pakikisama. It  makes people stay longer at parties, join pals in sickness and health. You can get dead drunk and still make it home. Sing-along.  Filipinos love to sing. And thank God a lot of us do it well!

Sari-Sari: Where else can we buy cigarettes, soap, condiments and life's essentials in small affordable amounts?  Jeepneys. Everyman's communal cadillac makes for a cheap, interesting ride. Tricycle and Trisikad: the poor Pinoy's taxicab that delivers you at your doorstep for as little as five pesos -- with a complimentary dusting of polluted air.

The Pres:  Irresponsible, sensational, often inaccurate, but still the liveliest in Asia. Otherwise, we'd all be glued to TV.   Barong Tagalog. Enables men to look formal and dignified without having to strangle themselves with a necktie. Worn well, it makes any ordinary Juan look marvelously makisig.

Pambahay:  Home is where one can let it all hang out, where clothes do not make a man or woman but rather define their level of comfort. Tabo:  All-powerful, ever-useful, hygienically-triumphant device to scoop water out of a bucket  --  and help the true Pinoy answer nature's call.

Pasalubong. Our way of sharing the vicarious thrills of a trip, and a wonderful excuse to shop without guilt. Pakidala: A personalized door-to-door remittance and delivery system for overseas Filipino workers who don't trust the banking system. They also get a family update from the courier. Balikbayan Box:  Another way of sharing life's bounty from anywhere in the globe. The most wonderful part is the contents are distributed.

Merienda: Where else is it normal to eat five times a day? Pandesal. Despite its shrinking size, still a good buy. Goes well with any filling, best when hot. Street food: Barbecue, lugaw, banana-cue, fishballs, IUD ( chicken entrails),  adidas (chicken feet), warm taho.  Forget hepatitis; here's cheap, tasty food with gritty ambience.

Kamayan: To eat with one's hand and eschew spoon, fork and table manners - ah, heaven.  Pinoy hospitality. Everyone gets a hearty "Kain tayo!" invitation to share food, no matter how spartan the dishes.  Sawsawan. Assorted sauces that guarantee freedom of choice, room for experimentation and maximum tolerance for diverse tastes. Favorites: toyo't calamansi, suka at sili, patis.

Pinoy tastes. A dietitian's nightmare: too sweet, too salty, too fatty, as in  itlog na maalat, crab fat (aligue), bokayo, kutchinta,  halo-halo, palitaw, pulburon, tuyo,  Remember, we're the guys who put sugar  in our spaghetti sauce.

Bagoong. Darkly mysterious, this smelly fish or shrimp paste typifies the underlying theme of most ethnic foods: disgustingly unhygienic, unbearably stinky and simply irresistible. Dinuguan. Blood stew, a bloodcurdling idea, until you try it with puto.

Balut.  Unhatched duck's embryo, another unspeakable ethnic food to outsiders, but oh, to indulge in guilty pleasures!  Chicharon. Pork, fish or chicken crackling. In the crunch, there is  a hint of the extravagant  and the pedestrian. Perfect with vinegar, sublime with beer.

Gerry Peñalosa’s mandatory WBO bantamweight title defense against Thai challenger Ratanachai Sor Vorapin on March 2 at the Araneta Coliseum has been called off, but the famed ALA Boxing Gym moved swiftly to keep its two topguns being originally slated in the undercard in the active list.

Eightnews.com has reported that the Penalosa-Vorapin won’t push through due to various reasons, including the huge budget intended reasons, including the huge budget intended for the title tiff.

However, ALA Gym chief Michael Aldeguer has confirmed that a contract has been signed between reigning WBO Asia Pacific Youth super flyweight title-holder AJ “Bazooka” Banal and the current WBA Fedelatin super flyweight kingpin Caril “El Raton” Herrera for a still undisclosed title.

The other Boholano world prospect Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista has been set to make his second comeback fight here against a still unknown foe, venue and date.

Herrera (21-0-0, 13KOs) has dominated the regional WBC and WBA super flyweight titles since Feb. 23, 2006 when he defeated Sergio Victor Caruso in a 6-round knockout.  He has successfully defended the WBC title four times since then, three of which by stoppage.  His supremacy in the WBA Fedelatin kingdom has not been challenged to-date.  This 19-yr old warrior from Uruguay is also currently WBC No. 2, WBA No. 8, and IBF No. 12.

Banal (16-0-1, KO13) is current ruler of the WBO Asia Pacific youth super flyweight division.  HE snatched the crown Mexican Jovanny Soto December last year through a technical KO in the 9th round.  Unlike Herrera who had been in the game for more than four years, Banal has only two years beyond his debut on June 2005.

This card which has the indication of another WBC world eliminator bout promised a devastating encounter between two demolishers stunning each other in the ring with the powerful tools of their trade. (Manny B)

A determined five of the Bohol Institute of Technology International College Jr. Cruisers halted defending champions Bohol Wisdom School Golden Dragons, 83-65 to gain the 1st final slot of the ongoing 13th Bohol Schools Amateur Athletic Association (BSAAA) 3rd Graham C Lim Basketball Challenge at the UB gym.

The rampaging jr Cruisers ignited a 10-0 blast to overhaul a 9 point deficit in the 3rd quarter to grab the driver’s seat, 50-60 as the Herculean pair of Kent Galaura and Brel Meurom started to dominate the boards to overwhelm their counterparts.

From there the Jr. Cruisers never looked back as they fought their hearts out coupled with the defenseless opponent as the formidable combination of Galaura and Meurom continued to fire their arsenals with accurate precision.

Former All-Star most valuable player Melvin Cyrus Polestico, streak shooter Kristian Atienza, power forward Lyle Gregorio had their bad night as they kept struggling to put up a fortified effort to neutralize Galaura and Meurom but to no avail as the latte were unstoppable.

Meurom slicing the middle with his patented barreling drives with Galaura taking the missed shots or getting a pass from under the basket and converted the points for his team.

University of Bohol Baby Lemurs spoiled the day of the never say die Mansasa High School Blue Marlins as they dealt the latter, 74-54 to stay alive for a final’s berth (1-1). They need to win against the Golden Dragons to arrange a showdown for the championship with the Baby Lemurs.

Jay Guillena, UB’s heart and soul, with the collaboration of speedy Zaldy Vente defied the opposition even as the most improved Elong Casile fighting for dear life in futility. The victory gave the Baby Lemurs their dominance against the never say die Blue Marlins. In the elimination round battle, the Baby Lemurs won, 84-79.

At lemon time, the Blue Marlins were on top by a solitary point, 27-26.
Uy sparked an uprising that never realized as his teammates lost steam and became erratic until coach Gerwin Cabalit pulled their starters to give way for the Jr cruisers to run away.
The Golden Dragons dominated the 1st half, 37-28.

BIT IC Mini Cruisers walloped undermanned BWS Jaguars, 83-65 to arrange a title showdown in the Mini Basketball division against the BWS Mini Dragons.

The 13th BSAAA 3rd Graham C Lim Basketball Challenge is ably supported by Mayor Dan Neri Lim; Mr. and Mrs. Gerardo B. Mandaguit; Mr. and Mrs. Camilo Torralba; Cebu PJ Stars; STY Marketing; BIT Topz; Bon’s Lumber Supply KM 3; Mr. and Mrs. Leo B. Sports and Fitness / Czar Amonsot Will Undergo MRI Scan
February 05, 2008, 09:02:45 PM
By Manny Bautista
The Bohol Chronicle

WBO Asia Pacific lightweight title holder Czar Amonsot will undergo another round of MRI and neuro tests today in one of Cebu’s finest hospitals to determined if he is physically and mentally fit to continue his boxing career.

In a weekend interview with this writer, Amonsot’s mother Miguel said her son was in Cebu City since the Sinulog festivity after a call from the ALA Boxing Gym and to attend boxing-related functions. Pending results of the examination, Czar continues training at the ALA gym.

The 22-year-old fighter from Bool district, this city has been indefinitely suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after his failed attempt to wrest the title from world champ Michael Katsidis in a 12-round grueling fight in Las Vegas, July last year. He was advised by his doctors to rest for six months but a freak accident at home could mean a year-long rest.

Dr. Debra Nelson of a noted Las Vegas hospital where Amonsot and Katsidis shared a room after the fight, earlier advised Amonsot to rest for one year to “perfect heal” his head injury.

Members of the Amonsot family are praying hard for Czar’s early recovery. “It’s up to the Almighty to give Czar another chance to continue his chosen career or hang up his gloves for good,” Miguela added in vernacular.
