General Topic / Choosing the right currency for your trip
February 28, 2008, 12:35:48 AM
Confused about whether you should book your hotel room with a credit or debit card? Or how much cash to exchange when you arrive overseas? While there are no steadfast rules about what types of currency to bring on your trip, travel and money experts do have recommendations on your best bets and what to avoid as you hit the road.

Cash is handy for emergencies and small purchases, but carrying too much can be risky.

Check out what experts have to say about the four commonly used forms of payment.

CREDIT CARDS

Pros
Security:
Whether you lose your card or it gets stolen, your credit card company has your back, says Ben Woolsey, director of marketing and research at CreditCards.com. The company will ship a new card to you if it's lost or stolen, and they won't make you pay you for fraudulent charges, he explains.

Wide acceptance:
Cards have "almost universal acceptance across the globe" among restaurants, airlines, hotels and merchants, Woolsey says. They're also almost always required if you want to reserve a rental car or hotel room, Woolsey says, to cover things like incidentals or trashing the room or the car.

Good exchange rates:
Credit card companies have negotiating power with the banks in foreign countries to convert money at more favorable rates than an individual could, Woolsey says.

Cons
Foreign transaction fees:
Most cards will carry fees up to 3 percent, Woolsey says. Some cards, including Capital One cards, don't charge these fees, but Woolsey warns that these cards tend to have lower credit lines.
Don't Miss

    * In Depth: Travel Companion

Limited use in less-traveled destinations:
"If you're going to a Third World country, you most likely can't rely on credit cards and you shouldn't," Brice Gosnell, Lonely Planet's regional publisher for the Americas says. Case in point: on a recent monthlong trip to Ethiopia, Gosnell says he was restricted to using cash because "no one" uses credit cards.

Before you go
Find out where your card is accepted:
Of the four major issuers, Visa and MasterCard are the most widely accepted cards worldwide, followed by American Express, then Discover, Woolsey says.

Call your credit card companies:
"It's always a good idea to take the five minutes to call your credit card company and say, 'FYI, I'm going to be out of the country for the next two weeks.' It's in their computer. That way they ... don't think your card is stolen."

Make sure your credit line is sufficient for the trip, Woolsey says.

CASH

Pro
Convenience:
Cash comes in handy for local transportation and small purchases, such as coffee or entry into museums as well as emergencies.

Cons
Easily lost or stolen:
As you decide how much to carry, consider your personal comfort level and how much you can afford to lose, says Fritz Elmendorf, a spokesman for the Consumer Bankers Association of America. He suggests carrying your cash in a money belt or storing it in your hotel's safe.

Conversion fees:
There can be high fees attached to changing money into foreign currency at airports, hotels and kiosks, Gosnell says. If you're going to change your cash into foreign currency, banks are your best bet, he says.

Leftovers:
You could lose out if you don't use all your cash in the country where it's accepted. When it comes to coins, Gosnell gives those away, "either to the taxi driver who dropped me off, kids, beggars, whomever." As for cash, he'll change it to dollars or, if he expects to revisit the country, he'll save it for next time.

Before you go
Change some money -- maybe $200 -- into the currency you'll need, Gosnell says. "Especially if you're doing an international flight, you get off the plane, you're a little disoriented, you're tired, you're groggy, that's one detail you don't want to have worry about," he says.

DEBIT

Pro
Convenience:
It's an easy way to get local currency.

Cheap (with the right bank):
Some international banks might not charge a fee if you use one of their ATMs abroad. For example, Bank of America customers can withdraw money sans fee at a Global ATM Alliance branch, whose members include the British. bank Barclays, Germany's Deutsche Bank and Canada's Scotiabank.

Cons
Big-time fees:
Elmendorf, who is currently working in Costa Rica, is charged $7 each time he hits the ATM. To minimize the extra cost, he says he always withdraws $400, the maximum amount. Likewise, cash advances using your credit card will levy heavy fees. On top of a fee, you will immediately incur interest charges, Elmendorf says.

Before you go
Budget ATM fees into your travel plans Gosnell says there's often no way around the fees, so people shouldn't try to fight them. "If you want the cash, you're just going to have to budget that ... if that's something your bank does. If you need the cash, you need the cash. What are you going to do?"

TRAVELER'S CHECKS

Pro
Security:
Traveler's checks, which are refundable if lost or stolen, "were kind of the original insured currency" before credit cards, Woolsey says.

Cons
Not universally accepted:
In a Third World country, or even a slightly more developed nation, you might have to go to a bank to get your traveler's checks cashed, Elmendorf says. Even some smaller hotels may not accept them or they might put additional restrictions on using them, he adds.

Fees:
"If you're going to pay for [traveler's checks], why don't you just pay the conversion charge or whatever that you might get on your credit card?" Gosnell asks rhetorically. You can also opt for travel debit cards, which are stored value cards similar to traveler's checks, but they do not offer benefits over credit cards, either, Woolsey says.

The dreaded "tourist" label:
Traveler's checks scream "tourist," Gosnell says, adding that some people want to avoid that distinction.

It was a story by Antoine de Saint-Exupery of a kid from Asteroid B-612 (that's what they thought) who landed to Earth and met the desert-stranded pilot in Sahara.  If you think you haven't seen this, I recommend this old movie.  I have a DVD that I dearly keep all these years.  I can send it to you, but I have to ask you to return whenever you are done watching this.  You may also want to share this with Angel too.

Iranian Man Sentenced to 4 Months in Jail, 30 Lashes for Walking Dog
Wednesday, February 20, 2008

A 70-year-old Iranian man was arrested and sentenced to four months in jail and 30 lashes for walking his dog, Adnkronos.com reported Tuesday. Police caught the man on the street with his dog in Shahr Rey, a suburb of Tehran.

Owners of domestic animals are forbidden from taking them on the streets of the city because Islam considers dogs to be impure. An Islamic judge later charged the man for "disturbing the public order,” Adnkronos.com reported.

Despite repeated warnings by the police, dog owners continue to defy authorities by taking their dogs outside their homes. Typical punishment for people caught with dogs outside is a fine or the "detention" of their animals in a pound, Adnkronos.com reported.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad recently provoked debate in Iran about dog ownership when he took possession of four guard dogs, bought in Germany for approximately $161,040 each.

Calif. Man Battles Deadly Illness Caused by Brain-Eating Amoeba
Thursday, February 21, 2008

E-Mail Print Share:
DiggFacebookStumbleUpon
A California man is battling a rare and usually fatal parasite caused by a brain-eating amoeba found in soil, the Press Enterprise reports.

Matt Moore, a fire captain in Murrieta, Calif., became seriously ill in November and doctors were initially baffled as to what was causing his sickness, according to the report. Moore, 43, is on life-support in a critical-care unit in San Diego.

Late last month, doctors, using a brain biopsy, pinpointed the illness to parasitic meningoencephalitis, an extremely rare infection caused by the brain-eating amoeba Balamuthia mandrillaris, it is reported.

"This has been a total nightmare," Moore's wife Sherry Moore, 42, told the Press Enterprise. "He's very, very sick, and the prognosis just doesn't look good. At this point, we're all praying for a miracle. Our faith is what's getting us through."

About 150 cases of this disease have been reported worldwide since scientists discovered in the early 1990s that the amoeba can infect humans, according to the report.

Scientists believe the amoeba infects humans by entering through a wound or by being inhaled after it has become airborne, it is reported.

BEIJING â€"  A lion attacked a 10-year-old boy visiting a circus in eastern China, biting off his arm through the bars of its cage, state media said Monday.

The boy was looking at the lion Saturday at Wanfota Park in Mengcheng, a county in Anhui province, when the feline lunged and grabbed the boy with its paws, pulling the child's arm inside the cage, the Xinhua News Agency said.

"Park workers managed to pull the boy away, but his left arm had been torn away by the animal," Xinhua said.

The reason behind the attack was not immediately clear. Doctors at the No. 1 People's Hospital operated on the boy, Xinhua said.

A man who answered the telephone at the hospital's emergency room Monday confirmed that the boy had been treated there and was still recovering. He did not have details and directed queries to the hospital's administrative office, where phones rang unanswered.

Mengcheng police said the space between the cage's iron bars were too large, and failed to properly contain the lion, according to Xinhua.

Police were questioning the park owners and circus organizers.

Last year, a 9-year-old boy was eaten by a crocodile in the southern region of Guangxi. The boy, with three other children, had scaled a fence around a pool in a park where crocodile shows were staged.

They fired at the reptiles with catapults and beat them with wooden sticks until one, riled by the treatment, dragged the boy into the water, where he was eaten by a swarm of crocodiles.

LONDON, England (AP) -- A British airline said Monday that one of its flights was forced to divert to Turkey after the co-pilot died in mid-flight. He died of natural causes, the airline said.

GB Airways said the Airbus A320, carrying 156 passengers from Manchester to Paphos in Cyprus, landed in Istanbul on Sunday after what was termed a medical emergency on the flight deck.

The co-pilot was pronounced dead once the plane had landed.

The airline identified the dead man as Michael Warren, 43, a former Royal Air Force pilot who was married and had two children.

Beyond natural causes, the airline did not give a specific cause of death.

The airline said passengers were never in danger. They were due to be flown to Cyprus on Monday.

Forget global warming: Welcome to the new Ice Age
Lorne Gunter, National Post
Published: Monday, February 25, 2008

Snow cover over North America and much of Siberia, Mongolia and China is greater than at any time since 1966.

The U.S. National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) reported that many American cities and towns suffered record cold temperatures in January and early February. According to the NCDC, the average temperature in January "was -0.3 F cooler than the 1901-2000 (20th century) average."

China is surviving its most brutal winter in a century. Temperatures in the normally balmy south were so low for so long that some middle-sized cities went days and even weeks without electricity because once power lines had toppled it was too cold or too icy to repair them.

There have been so many snow and ice storms in Ontario and Quebec in the past two months that the real estate market has felt the pinch as home buyers have stayed home rather than venturing out looking for new houses.

In just the first two weeks of February, Toronto received 70 cm of snow, smashing the record of 66.6 cm for the entire month set back in the pre-SUV, pre-Kyoto, pre-carbon footprint days of 1950.

And remember the Arctic Sea ice? The ice we were told so hysterically last fall had melted to its "lowest levels on record? Never mind that those records only date back as far as 1972 and that there is anthropological and geological evidence of much greater melts in the past.

The ice is back.

Gilles Langis, a senior forecaster with the Canadian Ice Service in Ottawa, says the Arctic winter has been so severe the ice has not only recovered, it is actually 10 to 20 cm thicker in many places than at this time last year.

OK, so one winter does not a climate make. It would be premature to claim an Ice Age is looming just because we have had one of our most brutal winters in decades.

But if environmentalists and environment reporters can run around shrieking about the manmade destruction of the natural order every time a robin shows up on Georgian Bay two weeks early, then it is at least fair game to use this winter's weather stories to wonder whether the alarmist are being a tad premature.

And it's not just anecdotal evidence that is piling up against the climate-change dogma.

According to Robert Toggweiler of the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University and Joellen Russell, assistant professor of biogeochemical dynamics at the University of Arizona -- two prominent climate modellers -- the computer models that show polar ice-melt cooling the oceans, stopping the circulation of warm equatorial water to northern latitudes and triggering another Ice Age (a la the movie The Day After Tomorrow) are all wrong.

"We missed what was right in front of our eyes," says Prof. Russell. It's not ice melt but rather wind circulation that drives ocean currents northward from the tropics. Climate models until now have not properly accounted for the wind's effects on ocean circulation, so researchers have compensated by over-emphasizing the role of manmade warming on polar ice melt.

But when Profs. Toggweiler and Russell rejigged their model to include the 40-year cycle of winds away from the equator (then back towards it again), the role of ocean currents bringing warm southern waters to the north was obvious in the current Arctic warming.

Last month, Oleg Sorokhtin, a fellow of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, shrugged off manmade climate change as "a drop in the bucket." Showing that solar activity has entered an inactive phase, Prof. Sorokhtin advised people to "stock up on fur coats."

He is not alone. Kenneth Tapping of our own National Research Council, who oversees a giant radio telescope focused on the sun, is convinced we are in for a long period of severely cold weather if sunspot activity does not pick up soon.

The last time the sun was this inactive, Earth suffered the Little Ice Age that lasted about five centuries and ended in 1850. Crops failed through killer frosts and drought. Famine, plague and war were widespread. Harbours froze, so did rivers, and trade ceased.

It's way too early to claim the same is about to happen again, but then it's way too early for the hysteria of the global warmers, too.
