he Chinese plant at the center of a controversy over the safety of half the nation's supply of the blood thinning drug heparin had problems involving impurities, the quality and use of its equipment, and overall quality control, a preliminary inspection by the Food and Drug Administration found.

In a heavily redacted report made public yesterday, the FDA inspectors also described at least one instance of the company using active ingredients -- which are made from pig intestines -- supplied by a "workshop" deemed to be "unacceptable." Heparin made from that source, the report said, was marketed to the United States.

Also yesterday, the maker of the drug, Baxter International, recalled virtually all of its remaining heparin products. Earlier this month, the firm stopped production, but the FDA wanted to keep the existing Baxter heparin in doctors' hands because it did not want to cause a shortage of the life-saving drug. Agency officials said increased production by the other heparin manufacturer can now satisfy the demand.

Sandra Kweder, deputy director of the FDA's Office of New Drugs, Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a teleconference that the agency had not found the "root cause" of the problems linked to Baxter's heparin. Since December, the drug, used as a blood thinner during surgery and dialysis, has been associated with almost 450 "adverse event reports" of allergic reactions and at least four deaths.

The problems with Baxter's heparin, and FDA's oversight of its production in China, have become emblematic of the changing nature of the nation's drug supply -- with growing amounts made abroad, especially in India and China. While imports from nations without strong regulatory agencies of their own have skyrocketed, FDA's budget for inspections has not.

The plant that made heparin for Baxter -- Changzhou SPL, located near Shanghai -- was supposed to be inspected before it began supplying the American market. FDA officials have acknowledged, however, that they had approved a different plant with a similar name and never reviewed Changzhou's application.

Michael Rogers, FDA's director of field investigations, said yesterday that the inspection of the heparin refining plant was complete, but a full analysis of what the inspectors found is continuing.

He also said the inspectors are still in China looking at "consolidators" that buy and begin processing the pig intestines, which often come from pigs raised and slaughtered in village farms, then sell their product to companies such as Changzhou SPL. The plant is majority-owned by an American company, Scientific Protein Laboratories of Waunakee, Wis.

SPL President David Strunce said in a statement that the FDA has not determined the Chinese plant was the source of the heparin problem. He also said, "The facility was specifically designed to comply with all of the standards set forth in FDA's current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) regulations."

The issue of inspecting foreign suppliers has become increasingly important on Capitol Hill, with several efforts underway to assure that the FDA gets more money to conduct inspections. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) yesterday sent a letter to President Bush arguing that the agency's budget must grow.

"As we've seen recently, the FDA can't even keep track of which company they should be inspecting," he wrote. "This lack of oversight by both the country of origin and the U.S. FDA puts American consumers at risk."

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), who chaired hearings on the issue for the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, said, "The sad reality is that Americans can expect more episodes similar to what we are now seeing with heparin unless FDA implements wholesale changes."

General Topic / Top Ten: Green Your Wardrobe
March 01, 2008, 03:45:53 PM

Green your wardrobe: Buy Ecofriendly clothesBuying clothes can consume a big chunk of your budget - especially if you have kids and teenagers. New clothes also take their toll on the planet, given how much water, pesticides and energy required to produce cotton, polyester and other fabrics (NOTE: 10% of all agricultural chemicals and 25% of insecticides in the U.S. are used to grow cotton. It takes almost 1/3 of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just one t-shirt.) Meanwhile, "out of style" clothes can end up in the trash even though they still have a lot of life left in them.

How can you green your wardrobe?

First, make clothes last longer.

1. Buy gender-neutral clothes. Young children especially are usually willing to share shorts, t-shirts and sweatshirts, or wear hand-me-downs.

2. Clean less frequently. Washing, drying and dry cleaning your clothes can wear fabric out and fade colors while using excessive amounts of water, and energy. Don’t wash clothes unless they’re actually dirty; hang on a line or on hangers to dry.

3. Hold a swap meet. You may be tired of your clothes, but your neighbor, work colleague, or girlfriend might love them. Invite a group of friends over who are about the same size (or in a couple of close size ranges). Ask each to bring three to five items they're ready to rotate out of their wardrobe for something different. Each person could leave with at least five new designs that they've swapped for their own old clothes.

4. Donate before you dispose. Dress for Success provides women looking for greater economic independence with business attire to wear to job interviews. One World Running ships donated running shoes, soccer gear and baseball equipment to athletes in developing countries. Salavation Army will pick up clothes right from your door.

5. Recycle. Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe grinds up and recycles discarded shoe material to build playground mats., basketball courts and running tracks. Project Rejeaneration lets you recycle jeans you buy at Del Forte Denim.

Second, buy “green” when you shop.

6. Buy fewer, but higher-quality clothes. Traditional styles like blazers, jackets and sweaters endure and are worth spending more money on. Buy just a few trendy items per season and “recycle” them at thrift shops or consignment stores once they're truly passé for you.

7. Shop second-hand. One of my teenage daughter's favorite boutiques is a consignment store where she rarely pays more than $15 for an outfit. She never goes shopping there unless she takes something from her closet to trade in: It's her favorite way of recycling. Plato's Closet and Buffalo Exchange are two retailers to look for in addition to the shops in your own neighborhood.

8. Buy clothes made from organic, low-impact or recycled materials. Organic cotton, hemp, bamboo and recycled fibers are the “green” rage.

9. Read the label. Avoid clothes that need dry cleaning, a process that usually involves perchloroethylene, a toxic chemical linked to various reproductive problems as well as headaches, nausea and dizziness. When given the choice, hand wash over dry cleaning.

10. Make every day casual day. Dressy suits and standard business attire usually require dry cleaning to maintain their crisp, professional look. Encourage a “casual dress code” on the job so employees can dress in wash-and-wear clothing every day, not just “casual Fridays” or during more laid-back summer months.

World Daily News / How to cool a Planet (Maybe)
March 01, 2008, 03:01:59 PM
n the past few decades, a handful of scientists have come up with big, futuristic ways to fight global warming: Build sunshades in orbit to cool the planet. Tinker with clouds to make them reflect more sunlight back into space. Trick oceans into soaking up more heat-trapping greenhouse gases.

Articles in this series are examining the ways in which the world is, and is not, moving toward a more energy efficient, environmentally benign future.

Their proposals were relegated to the fringes of climate science. Few journals would publish them. Few government agencies would pay for feasibility studies. Environmentalists and mainstream scientists said the focus should be on reducing greenhouse gases and preventing global warming in the first place.

But now, in a major reversal, some of the world's most prominent scientists say the proposals deserve a serious look because of growing concerns about global warming.

Worried about a potential planetary crisis, these leaders are calling on governments and scientific groups to study exotic ways to reduce global warming, seeing them as possible fallback positions if the planet eventually needs a dose of emergency cooling.

"We should treat these ideas like any other research and get into the mind-set of taking them seriously," said Ralph J. Cicerone, president of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington.

The plans and proposed studies are part of a controversial field known as geoengineering, which means rearranging the earth's environment on a large scale to suit human needs and promote habitability. Dr. Cicerone, an atmospheric chemist, will detail his arguments in favor of geoengineering studies in the August issue of the journal Climatic Change.

Practicing what he preaches, Dr. Cicerone is also encouraging leading scientists to join the geoengineering fray. In April, at his invitation, Roger P. Angel, a noted astronomer at the University of Arizona, spoke at the academy's annual meeting. Dr. Angel outlined a plan to put into orbit small lenses that would bend sunlight away from earth â€" trillions of lenses, he now calculates, each about two feet wide, extraordinarily thin and weighing little more than a butterfly.

In addition, Dr. Cicerone recently joined a bitter dispute over whether a Nobel laureate's geoengineering ideas should be aired, and he helped get them accepted for publication. The laureate, Paul J. Crutzen of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany, is a star of atmospheric science who won his Nobel in 1995 for showing how industrial gases damage the earth's ozone shield. His paper newly examines the risks and benefits of trying to cool the planet by injecting sulfur into the stratosphere.

The paper "should not be taken as a license to go out and pollute," Dr. Cicerone said in an interview, emphasizing that most scientists thought curbing greenhouse gases should be the top priority. But he added, "In my opinion, he's written a brilliant paper."

Geoengineering is no magic bullet, Dr. Cicerone said. But done correctly, he added, it will act like an insurance policy if the world one day faces a crisis of overheating, with repercussions like melting icecaps, droughts, famines, rising sea levels and coastal flooding.

"A lot of us have been saying we don't like the idea" of geoengineering, he said. But he added, "We need to think about it" and learn, among other things, how to distinguish sound proposals from ones that are ineffectual or dangerous.

Many scientists still deride geoengineering as an irresponsible dream with more risks and potential bad side effects than benefits; they call its extreme remedies a good reason to redouble efforts at reducing heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide. And skeptics of human-induced global warming dismiss geoengineering as a costly effort to battle a mirage.

Even so, many analysts say the prominence of its new advocates is giving the field greater visibility and credibility and adding to the likelihood that global leaders may one day consider taking such emergency steps.

"People used to say, 'Shut up, the world isn't ready for this,' " said Wallace S. Broecker, a geoengineering pioneer at Columbia. "Maybe the world has changed."

Michael C. MacCracken, chief scientist of the Climate Institute, a private research group in Washington, said he was resigned to the need to take geoengineering seriously.

"It's really too bad," Dr. MacCracken said, "that the United States and the world cannot do much more so that it's not necessary to consider getting addicted to one of these approaches."

Martin A. Apple, president of the Council of Scientific Society Presidents, said of geoengineering at a recent meeting in Washington, "Let's talk about research funding with enough zeroes on it so we can make a dent."

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nearly 70 percent of Americans believe traditional journalism is out of touch, and nearly half are turning to the Internet to get their news, according to a new survey.

While most people think journalism is important to the quality of life, 64 percent are dissatisfied with the quality of journalism in their communities, a We Media/Zogby Interactive online poll showed.

"That's a really encouraging reflection of people who care A) about journalism and B) understand that it makes a difference to their lives," said Andrew Nachison, of iFOCOS, a Virginia-based think tank which organized a forum in Miami where the findings were presented.

Nearly half of the 1,979 people who responded to the survey said their primary source of news and information is the Internet, up from 40 percent just a year ago. Less than one third use television to get their news, while 11 percent turn to radio and 10 percent to newspapers.

More than half of those who grew up with the Internet, those 18 to 29, get most of their news and information online, compared to 35 percent of people 65 and older. Older adults are the only group that favors a primary news source other than the Internet, with 38 percent selecting television.

Howard Finberg, of the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida, said the public often doesn't understand that the sources they are accessing online such as Google News and Yahoo News pull stories from newspapers, television, wire services and other media sources.

"It's delivered in a non-traditional form, that doesn't necessarily mean there isn't traditional journalism underneath it," he explained.

But Finberg said the study does support the belief among many large media companies that focusing on local issues is important to their journalistic and economic survival.

The Siam Cement Group (SCG), a leading ASEAN conglomerate, is launching a scholarship program for Filipino high school students dubbed "SCG Sharing the Dream" in collaboration with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP).

As part of its corporate social responsibility, the scholarship program will provide assistance to 200 incoming high school students in Bulacan, Batangas and Metro Manila, where the SCG maintains its paper and ceramic tile manufacturing facilities.

Kan Trakulhoon, SCG chief executive officer and president, flew in from Thailand to personally launch the project that will be enrolled under the Department of Education's Adopt-A-School program.

The Adopt-A-School program calls for directed resources for the improvement of the public school educational system.

Initially, the scholarship will be extended to students who have completed their first year secondary education in public schools in the target areas, and who have obtained at least a minimum general average of 70 percent during their sophomore year, as well as demonstrated gratefulness to their parents.

Asked why the scholars need not have higher grades as other scholarship programs require, Trakulhoon said, "All we wanted is to really help those who are in need. Seventy percent is not too much to ask, so it will ensure that we will be able to assist students who would really like to finish their studies."

On questions why the scholarship will commence on the sophomore year, Trakulhoon said, "The PBSP survey reveals that the highest percentage of dropouts among high school students happens during the second year because of financial restraints. It is in this area that we would like to extend our assistance."

With the reported increase in dropouts among high school students due to financial difficulties, the PBSP sees the SCG scholarship program as a meaningful initiative, which it hopes other companies will replicate.

The scholarship program will initially cover Sto. Tomas in Batangas, Calumpit in Bulacan and nearby towns as well as parts of Metro Manila such as Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, Quezon City and Muntinlupa.
SCG logo

The educational assistance will cover school uniforms, school supplies and miscellaneous expenses that would sum up to P7,800 per scholar.

Aside from the secondary education scholarship program, the SCG foundation is also extending its masteral degree scholarship for Filipino students to study in leading universities in Thailand.

The SCG also completed its partnership with Knowledge Channel by granting satellite television to elementary schools in the Philippines.

Steeped in its concern for social responsibility, the SCG invests heavily in communities and human development, believing that this will ultimately contribute to sustainable growth for the company and its stakeholders.

"The SCG believes that our most important asset is the individual. When we talk of sustainability, we do not only refer to the company's growth or profits but to people and values as well. The scholarship program is one of the ways for us to extend that sustainability to the communities where we operate," Trakulhoon said.

Established in 1913, the SCG is one of Thailand's and Southeast Asia's leading conglomerates.

The Philippines is the first country where the SCG has the largest investment outside Thailand. It has four businesses in the country, including United Pulp and Paper Inc., Mariwasa Siam Ceramics, CPAC Monier Philippines Inc., and SCT Philippines Inc.

Feb 29th, 2008 | BEIJING -- China's government is boosting the authority of its environmental watchdog agency in an attempt to rein in the rampant pollution that has become a byproduct of the nation's rapid economic growth.

The State Environmental Protection Agency, known as SEPA, is to be upgraded to a full Cabinet ministry with a bigger budget and more people, said a former agency official and environmental activists briefed on the plans.

The upgrade is part of a government restructuring approved this week by the Communist Party leadership. The changes, expected to be formally approved by the national legislature in March, are meant to help one of China's weakest agencies grapple with one of the country's biggest problems.

Environmental degradation has fouled the air in Chinese cities and poisoned farmland and water sources, leading to protests at home and drawing criticism abroad. The environmental agency, formed in 1998, has struggled to enforce rules that are often ignored.

"SEPA in recent years has been trying to do a lot with very little," said Alex Wang, director of the China Environmental Law Project at the Natural Resources Defense Council. "The challenge that SEPA faces now first and foremost is insufficient resources and authority."

Under the plan, the agency would become the Ministry of Environment, said Hongjun Zhang, a former agency official and environmental law expert, and Lo Sze Ping of Greenpeace in Beijing.

Zhang said the staff could be increased from 200 people to 300 or 400, and that over time the body would be given more authority over local environmental bureaus, which tend to be beholden to local industries and politicians and often flout the rules.

The environmental agency declined to comment on the changes.

Beijing's filthy air has drawn international attention with the city set to host the Olympics in August. Global warming activists criticize China's emissions of greenhouse gases.

The World Bank, in a draft report with China's environmental agency, estimates the country's air and water pollution cost about $100 billion a year â€" 5.8 percent of its economic output â€" mainly through health costs. The government spends 1.35 percent of the gross domestic product on environmental protection.

Even with new powers, the environmental watchdog is likely to face formidable opposition from local governments geared to ramping up economic growth and protecting factories that pay tax revenues.

Local environmental officials also will still answer to provincial or local governments, leaving the new ministry understaffed for the task policing the environment, activists said.

Feb 29th, 2008 | WASHINGTON -- A White House official who serves as President Bush's middleman with conservatives and Christian groups was chastised Friday after admitting to plagiarism. Twenty columns he wrote for an Indiana newspaper were determined to have material copied from other sources without attribution.

Timothy Goeglein, who has worked for Bush since 2001, acknowledged that he lifted material from a Dartmouth College publication and presented it as his own work in a column about education for The News-Sentinel in Fort Wayne, Ind.

"His behavior is not acceptable and we are disappointed in Tim's actions," said White House spokeswoman Emily Lawrimore. "He is offering no excuses and he agrees it was wrong."

Asked if he would keep his job, she said, "At this point we have nothing more for you on that."

She said officials were looking into allegations that Goeglein had plagiarized other material.

The News-Sentinel said an internal investigation found that 20 of 38 of Goeglein's columns published in the past eight years contained portions copied from other sources without attribution. Goeglein has submitted unsolicited, or guest, columns to The News-Sentinel for more than 20 years and he has never been paid for them, the paper said.

News-Sentinel editor Kerry Hubartt said the paper would no longer publish Goeglein's writings.

Goeglein's action was brought to light by a blogger, Nancy Nall, a former News-Sentinel columnist.

Goeglein has worked at the White House since 2001. He is a special assistant to Bush and deputy director of the Office of Public Liaison, serving as the administration's liaison with influential conservatives. He was a right-hand man for former strategist Karl Rove when he oversaw the public liaison office.

"He has apologized to the editors of The News-Sentinel and also said there may be other previous columns he has written for The News-Sentinel that also may contain plagiarized material," Hubartt said.

Lawrimore said the White House press office was unaware that Goeglein was writing a column. "He recalls that he informed someone in the White House press office earlier in the administration," she said.

Nall posted a comparison of Goeglein's work with an essay by Jeffrey Hart in the Dartmouth Review.

Goeglein's column said this:

"A notable professor of philosophy at Dartmouth College in the last century, Eugene Rosenstock-Hussey, expressed the matter succinctly. His wisdom is not only profound but also worth pondering in this new century. He said, "The goal of education is to form the citizen. And the citizen is a person who, if need be, can re-found his civilization.

"He meant that, I think, in quite a large sense. He did not mean that you had to master all the specialties you can think of, but rather to be an educated man or woman, you needed to be familiar with the large and indispensable components of our civilization.

"This does not mean you should not study other cultures and civilizations. It does mean that to be a citizen of this one, you should be aware of what it is and where it â€" we â€" came from. It can hardly be challenged that the United States of America is part of the narrative of European history."

Hart's essay said this:

"A notable Professor of Philosophy at Dartmouth, Eugene Rosenstock-Hussey often expressed the matter succinctly, `The goal of education,' he would say, `is to form the citizen. And the citizen is a person who, if need be, can re-found his civilization.'

"He meant that in quite large a sense. He did not mean that you had to master all the specialties you can think of. He meant that you need to be familiar with the large and indispensable components of your â€" this â€" civilization.

"This certainly does not mean that you should not study other cultures and civilizations. It does mean that to be a Citizen of this one you should be aware of what it is and where it came from. It can scarcely be challenged that the United States is part of the narrative of European history."

BAGHDAD â€"  Gunmen on Friday kidnapped Chaldean Catholic Archbishop Paulos Faraj Rahho in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, police and the church said.

The gunmen also killed three people who were with Rahho, 65, at the time of the kidnapping, which occurred after he ended a Mass in a nearby church, said Iraqi Brig. Gen. Khalid Abdul-Sattar, a spokesman for the Ninevah province police.

An aide to Iraq's Cardinal Emmanuel III Delly, leader of the church, said he did not know who was behind the kidnapping.

"We pray for his release as soon as possible," said Archbishop Andreos Abouna. "This act of abduction against a Christian clergy member will increase our fears and worries about the situation of Christians in Iraq."

Last year's International Religious Freedom Report from the U.S. State Department noted that Chaldean Catholics comprise a tiny minority of the Iraqi population, but are the largest group among the less than 1 million Christians in Iraq.

Since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, Iraqi Christians have been targeted by Islamic extremists who label them "crusaders" loyal to U.S. troops.

Churches, priests and business owned by Christians have been attacked by Islamic militants and many have fled the country.

Last June, Pope Benedict XVI expressed deep concern about the plight of Christians caught in the deadly sectarian crossfire in Iraq and pressed U.S. President George W. Bush in a meeting to keep their safety in mind.

"Particularly in Iraq, Christian families and communities are feeling increasing pressure from insecurity, aggression and a sense of abandonment," Benedict said at the time.

Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki pledged last fall to protect and support the Christian minority.

We also had a similar story in the family.  My sister wanted to take up criminology and we didn't want her to.  We asked her to study accountancy.  She stopped after one semester.  She tried AB, and same thing.  Engineering, oh how she hated those big calculators with strange buttons! ;D  Then one day she told me, if she won't be allowed to take up criminology, she'd rather not go to school anymore.  She won and I was glad she fought for it because now she is very good in her job.  Mao lang na, we'll just have to pray always for her safety!

I donated tons of novels/pocketbooks late last year but I still have some and lots of magazines that I keep.  I would give some of my books up if people can make use of them. The only problem is that it's so costly to send these books there.
