To my dear and esteemed Bai Hubag and Bai Balong,

I pray that the beauty of your individual character and the bond of brotherly camaraderie wins the day, that any differences between you both will be put away, as there is so much we (all of Tubag Bohol) can learn from both of you through discussion and through life experience exchanges.

Here is a song for both of you:

What does the Catholic Church teach about "invincible ignorance?" Catholic Answers Director of Apologetics and Evangelization Tim Staples explains.

Tim Staples is Director of Apologetics and Evangelization here at Catholic Answers, but he was not always Catholic. Tim was raised a Southern Baptist. Although he fell away from the faith of his childhood, Tim came back to faith in Christ during his late teen years through the witness of Christian televangelists. Soon after, Tim joined the Marine Corps.

During his four-year tour, he became involved in ministry with various Assemblies of God communities. Immediately after his tour of duty, Tim enrolled in Jimmy Swaggart Bible College and became a youth minister in an Assembly of God community. During his final year in the Marines, however, Tim met a Marine who really knew his faith and challenged Tim to study Catholicism from Catholic and historical sources. That encounter sparked a two-year search for the truth. Tim was determined to prove Catholicism wrong, but he ended up studying his way to the last place he thought he would ever end up: the Catholic Church!

He converted to Catholicism in 1988 and spent the following six years in formation for the priesthood, earning a degree in philosophy from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania. He then studied theology on a graduate level at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, for two years. Realizing that his calling was not to the priesthood, Tim left the seminary in 1994 and has been working in Catholic apologetics and evangelization ever since.

he he he! maka himomdom pod ko sa bata pa ko, gusto gajod ko kalingaw mo uban ni lolo ciano. Driver man si Lolo Ciano sa ijang Truck, "SALVO LINES" sa una sa Valencia. He used to wake up so early at 5-6 AM in the morning kai mag ready. I remember one time, my cousin Joseph and I woke up early to see our Lolo sitting on the table drinking his cape and eating pandesal.

Ingon mi nija, "Lolo, pwede mo uban mi nimo?"

He put his coffee cup down and looked at my cousin Joseph and I and smiled. Ingon dajon si Lolo, "Sige."

So, for the whole day we drove around with our Lolo. Lolo in the driver's seat in the front, and Joseph and I sitting next to him.

At the end of the day, he treated us with cold coca cola, coconut pandesal, and barbeque chicken. ;D

That's how we used to spend our Saturdays...spending it with our Lolo.

Hiding from the rain and snow
Trying to forget but I won't let go
Looking at a crowded street
Listening to my own heart beat

So many people all around the world
Tell me where do I find someone like you girl

Take me to your heart, take me to your soul
Give me your hand before I'm old
Show me what love is, haven't got a clue
Show me that wonders can be true

They say nothing lasts forever
We're only here today
Love is now or never
Bring me far away

Take me to your heart, take me to your soul
Give me your hand and hold me
Show me what love is, be my guiding star
It's easy, take me to your heart

Standing on a mountain high
Looking at the moon through a clear blue sky
I should go and see some friends
But they don't really comprehend

Don't need too much talking without saying anything
All I need is someone who makes me wanna sing

Take me to your heart, take me to your soul
Give me your hand before I'm old
Show me what love is, haven't got a clue
Show me that wonders can be true

Excerpt from page 17:

"Feelings accompany the metaphysical and metaphysical fact of love, but they do not constitute it; and the feelings that accompany it can be very different. Jesus' feelings for the possessed man is different from his feelings for the beloved disciple; but the love is one. Feelings one "has"; love occurs. Feelings dwell in man, but man dwells in his love. This is no metaphor but actuality: love does not cling to an I, as if the You were merely its "content" or objects; it is between I and You.

Whoever does not know this, know this with his being, does not know love, even if he should ascribe to it the feelings that he lives through, experiences, enjoys, and expresses. Love is a cosmic force....Love is the responsibility of an I for a You: in this consists what cannot consist in any feeling-- the equality of all lovers, from the smallest to the greatest and from the blissfully secure whose life is circumscribed by the life of one beloved human being to him that is nailed his life along to the cross of the world, capable of what is immense and bold enough to risk it: to love man. "
#14023
An excerpt in page 17 of the book:

"The only guide to a man in his conscience ; the only shield to his memory is the rectitude and sincerity of his actions. It is very imprudent to walk through life  without this shield, because we are so often mocked by the failure of our hopes and the upsetting of our calculations; but with this shield, however the fates may play, we march always in the ranks of honor.

I still regard this passage as the most concise, coherent, and persuasive argument for a strictly honorable life on purely secular grounds."

Here is a prayer for the parents:

Dear Lord! Fill our parents with Thy choicest blessings;
enrich their souls with Thy holy grace;
grant that they may faithfully
and constantly guard that likeness to Thy union with Thy Church,
which Thou didst imprint upon them on their wedding day.
Fill them with Thy spirit of holy fear,
which is the beginning of wisdom;
inspire them to impart it to their children.
May they ever walk in the way of Thy commandments,
and may we their children be their joy on earth
and their crown of glory in heaven.
Finally, Lord God, grant that both our father and mother
may attain to extreme old age
and enjoy continuous health in mind and body.
May they give Thee abundant thanks
because Thou hast bestowed upon them the great gift of parenthood.

Amen.

For Whom The Bell Tolls

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thine own
Or of thine friend's were.
Each man's death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

                          -John Donne

Isles,

She was a very loving and good-hearted lady. We talked about her family and my family and the importance of showing love to one's mother. She told me one time via public post as well as through PM , "always show love to your mommy, lorenzo". I cannot help but have a sense of sadness in the fact that her own children have been without their mother for these past 4 years. She was a very kind lady, isles. As what Mike Ligalig said, "she was the heart and soul of Tubag Bohol". That she was, and that she is.

I wish you could have met her, isles. But somehow, i'm sure you have met her in a way through her posts.

Unsa pa ! When I was in college, they say "Bahalag Saging Basta Loving". TOINKS ! Maybe I was a little ambitious. I don't consider money to be everything but it is a great tool to have in life. Alangan man ug pabug-at ra ka to those people around you. Soon, even those who love you dearly would buckle under that burden. Mas maayo pud nang you can stand on your own, and if you have more to spare, then you have a choice to share. If you don't have anything, you can't share anything.  Although it has to have a balance too. Anything in excess is dangerous.

Anyway, this brought up a short anecdote Mama told me. During my Papa's heyday, he loved to "treat" people. Even total strangers. Hi personal favorites were those old merchants who sell things door to door. No not the expensive stuff. Fishwoman with her bucket of fish, the taho guy, the balut guy, down to this older woman who was selling this wood carved storage things.  Papa would buy them out and give their stuff to his friends or to our relatives. He bought out  a taho guy once and I swear I wasn't gonna eat Taho for a year ! then there's the balut guy. He bought everything and called the istambays and gave them free balut.

Mama told him that he was very "pasikat" and "hambugero" and to stop spending money. He said "Dili man nako magasto-an or mabangkahan ang Ginoo, sa iyaha nalang mga anak ko mo-bangka".  So for Papa, that was his way of thanking God and making his fellow man happy. Buying in excess of what he needs and sharing it to the family , friends and neighbors.   To the merchant, he was a blessing , to the istambays, a free snack and sometimes, when he buys out the entire bucket of fish (ginamos, bolinaw etc), our family and few neighbors get a nice dinner. :-)

he he he ! sentimental man gud ni si Lolo, i guess i get that aspect from him. Thank you , Alice, for sharing with all of us the loving and expressive being that your papa has. Yes, he's right...it's always good to give back from time to time.

Sometimes, one can be wealthy within oneself and not according to outward appearance or outward riches. This is, indeed, true. Sometimes we tend to compare ourselves to how much others make, what kind of car others drive, how big others' houses are etc etc. But the true wealth is in how you feel content with yourself, the joy you have in your life.

A person can be a millionnaire and despite his or her millions, his abundance in materialistic wealth, still not be satisfied and still be not content with life. A person can have materialistic wealth , yet incapable or unable to have joy.

A person can be poor in terms of materialistic gain , yet be content and filled with inner joy due to successful investment in children. A specific example of this was when I was in Southern Leyte 2 years ago to visit my distant relatives in my father's side. As i drove from the port of Maasin towards my father's parents' hometown of Padre Burgos and Pintuyan, Southern Leyte, I could not help but observe one characteristic of Leyte -- the vastness of the coconut trees.

I had stopped by near Sogod, Southern Leyte to purchase some food to bring to my relatives in Padre Burgos. I met this old man who was selling coconut meat as well as other fruits, bags of rice etc. He was an old businessman. What was originally supposed to be a basic transaction ended up almost an hour-long conversation about life and about his children and family struggles. This man, a simple business guy, was proud of the fact that his son had recently graduated from CIT's Civil Engineering Program and had passed the engineering board exam. The man started to cry when he was describing how hard it was to save enough money to send his son to college, he ended up selling some of his land, but he was able to send his son to college. To me, what i saw in this man was the "contentedness" he found and the "joy" he had found in knowing that his investment in his son's education had paid off. That man had sold 5 hectares of land filled with coconut trees in order to pay his son's tuition. How beautiful it is to hear of a father's love for his son.

I will always remember that high quality conversation with him.

Very commendable style (or philosophy) Alycxs. It takes real wisdom and guts to do what you've done (savings bonds). I know of someone very close to me who invests with savings bonds (sa una para sa iyang mga anak and later for grand kids) - doing it in the last 60-70 years. It really takes patience but it's always a sure bet, close to Lorenzo's style (CDs and Savings). Of course, the more risk you take, the bigger possibilities/potential it would usher one (good or bad)... sa dunay guts ra gyod na and those with a little to spare. These are all commendable especially if you hit big time (and they will call you a visionary for that). If not, mohiganhawa lag lalom and whisper, "Oh, well... I tried." Like many in life, it's a gamble. And only gamblers win (at times). But for most people... hoping na lang to stay healthy para wala kaayoy gastos... and kakha tuka, too (living from check to check), hoping to limit expenditures to the minimum/one's basic needs. And to the less fortunate, aw, Ginoo na lang pod bahala nila, hehehe. I'm sure there's enough for all of us.  ;)

Amen, Father R! As they say, "If you've got health, you've got wealth."

Anonymous Diary Blog / A picture for Isles
May 04, 2012, 03:01:16 PM
I decided to visit Ravenswood, a neighborhood in Chicago during my lunch break earlier today and wandered into an eclectic art store. There I found a picture that reminded me of Isles. So, isles, i took the photo just for you. Here it is.

;)

Addendum: When i saw this picture, i automatically thought of isles who said, "i would've been an astronaut" in another thread. I took a picture. Luckily for me the art store owner didn't make a big deal.

Advancing one's educational expertise is always a good strategy, Alice. In this world, it is beneficial to acquire further education. Keep it up gajod. I am a big supporter of educational investment. Kai, if one wants to invest in something, the best place to start is in investing in oneself.

Padayon!

Just food for thought..

In 2007, my cousins who live in TOm's River, NJ visited us here in Houston.

Apparently, where they are, BSN RNs start at 28/hr night shift. In Houston, around $25/hr that's a $3 difference.

According to them, my 2 story, 2,000 sqft 3br2.5ba brick home is around $400k in NJ. The Woodlands is one of the more upscale areas in Houston and we got it for $150k.

heheh ! We never had a housing bubble and Texas has the Texas Medical Center. Oh, easy to visit Pinas too...From Houston-Bush to Narita to Manila. or go thru Houston-Hobby to LA then MNL. Houston is one of the few cities that is still hiring. there's lay-offs but lots of hiring too. Companies like Shell, Chevron, TOtal, Schlumberger are still recruiting heavily at U of H.

Food craving...I'm not even gonna start. its a yum party with more than 5 filipino buffets. :-) it might be a good financial move.

downside, winter is far too short. My furry boots gets used twice a year TOPS :-(

He he he ! Sobra ra ka congested ang New Jersey kai gamay ra ang lugar, pero daghan na kaajo ang tawo didto. Pero, lami ang pay didto. I grew up in Cherry Hill , New Jersey , guwapo ang location kai very typically suburban, pero too congested lagi.

If you are a veteran nurse, you can easily make $45 - $50 an hour as an RN in New Jersey. The taxes in New Jersey is high, tho, and the cost of living is a lot.

Tinuod ka, Alice, about the housing situation in New Jersey. A 4 bedroom house with 2.5 bathrooms in NJ will cost anywhere between $300,000 to $400,000. Mahal ra kaajo.

A 5-6 bedroom mansion in Katy, Texas costs $250,000 , which is pretty good price. The same mansion in New Jersey would be worth $1 Million +.

I'm sorry, isles, to hear of the circumstance that you described. I can truly empathize with you and relate to your situation. All i can say is that the peace one receives,  a sense of outpouring of Divine Grace, when one observes the sacrament of the Eucharist in Eucharistic adoration ....transcends any notion of verbal explanation/ expression.

The peace of God permeates and abides in one's soul during Eucharistic adoration gives you a sense of peace that is not of this world.

Lorenzo, what you say is right. It is definitely what my Mama and Papa had planned and done. When my Papa lost his job due to his illness, they went from living very comfortably to living on only 1/8th of the former income. If my parents were in perfect health, they wouldn't be in trouble, but seeing as health insurance is almost non-existent in the PI. (yeah, I know, there's some sorry form of it), they struggle from time to time. Good thing I'm blessed to have a good job so I can help out.

Mama is very cautious. From when I was little, they saved and invested in lots. Its not very liquid, I know, but it sure helped out in a pinch as collateral to the bank. She also invested in Marcela Bonds from Plaza Marcela which used to earn 10% per year and gave her a 6% commission discount. Through the years, there was Forever Living, PhilKraft, DXN...name it, my Mama tried it and didn't work out too well. Always fell back to Marcela Bonds and her regular government job. Papa on the other hand, made lots of money as a sea man captain. He spent a lot too, if not for Mama's constant nag to save. Which he did. grudgingly.

The point to this story is that, with risk comes reward. Its just a matter of what kind of risk are we comfortable with.

When I was 18, Papa gave me $100 for my Christmas present. At that time, the exchange rate was P55 to $1. I promptly took all the money and invested it in Plaza Marcela. Unfortunately, from 10% interest a year, it fell to 6%. Sucks but when you consider most banks only pay 2% at most 4% for savings, I was still ahead. I then used the credit line that came with the bond and the 6% interest to get the things I wanted with 3 months to pay it back while earning interest.

In thesame year, my math teacher from HNU (shameless forgot her name), lent me a copy of Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad. It gave me a whole new perspective on investment, passive income and consumption. Man, I see her face in my mind, I can't remember her name. She had wanted to recruit me in a pyramid numismatic gold coin business, but she ended up inspiring me to do the Marcela Bonds and indirectly, what I'm doing today. Flipping houses, Remodelling and renting out foreclosed homes we bought, and even branching out to ICM Bonds and adding to my Marcela Bonds.

Hinay-hinay lang gud. It will get there.  I tried DXN MLM selling coffee and what have you. Didn't make too much but at age 19 and making around P5,000 in 2002, that was pretty good. I think. I also tried skin botanicals MLM, but all soaps. Not much, around an extra P2000 tops a month. still not bad for a 19yo. My Marcela Bonds grew from P5,000 to P8,000 in 8 years that I left it alone. P375 a year, without doing anything. Nothing to write home about but still, effortless money is effortless money. It could've made more probably if I was there managing the POs and collecting but its ok.  I did add a little bit to Marcela Bond and started an ICM bond too. Still ahead of the banking and savings rate. It will take time to grow but its still earning passive income.

All the rent houses we have are passive income too...after the initial 2-3 months worth of work(meaning supervising the contractor). This leaves me with time to spend with Ryan, keep house, call Pinas every other day, call Auntie, cousins telebabad...and have time to dedicate to our HomeVestors franchise and flipping houses. Yep, also time for going back to school to get my second major. hehehe ! Bahala ug tag 2-3 subjects ra. Hinay-hinay, mahuman ra lagi ni puhon. On the upside...I get to go to Bohol every year. Twice on a good year. hehe ! I'm happy.

I guess if Mama's risk tolerance is 2 from a range of 1-10, mine is around 5-6....sir Balong's is at 10. IMHO. those things he's talking about scare me stiff. I'm likely to lose everything.

Hopefully, someday, when Ryan and I get old, we won't have thesame problems my Mama and Papa have with just relying on their savings and getting into tight spots over medical bills and emergencies. I'm praying we'll have enough to be comfy for the rest of our lives and have some left over for the kids to fight over our graves ahahaah !   bahala ug dli diamond coffin. kanang kahoy ra gud para fertilizer apil. :-)

Alice,

I read your posting top to bottom 3 times, and would like to say that maayo gajod nga hilig imohang mama mo tigomtigom. It is so very important to save, Alice, because in the case of health issues and the unexpected challenges that life sends our way, its always good to have something to lean back onto; financial security helps.

I empathize for your parents and the health issues they have, but what is evident is that they raised a child that is capable of steering her own ship's wheel (just like your father who was a sea captain) in terms of fiscal responsibility. I also like your phrase, "Hinay hinay basta kanunay..." kai tinuod gajod na. The best growth is a steady, and gradual growth, okey lang if ma dugay, basta mo grow. It is commendable that you help your parents and your family and give back to those who are important in your life. In the end, it reminds us that it really is not the money one made in life, but the teaching and the transmission of character to your children. The success of one's child is the crowning glory of parents.

Keep up your good work in helping your parents ! May God bless you !

Additionally, good job on going back to school and finishing up your second major. Mao na ! Investing in the best thing -- education. That is something that no one can ever take away. ;)

PS. What are you studying right now?

Sincerely,
Lorenzo
