Photos Unlimited / Catch Venus Before It Disappears
March 11, 2009, 05:34:42 PM
In about three weeks, we will lose a brilliant luminary that has been so much a part of our evening sky since the end of last summer.

The planet Venus, which shone so high and bright in the western sky during February, is now moving steadily lower with each passing night; it has begun its plunge down toward the sunset, soon to make its most dramatic exit from the evening sky since 2001.

Currently Venus is setting just under three hours after the sun in a dark sky. You can't miss it. Simply go out just after sunset and look West.

By March 12, Venus will follow the sun by only about two hours and on March 21 by just an hour. And by March 25 it will lie only 9-degrees to the upper-right of the setting sun (your clenched fist measures roughly 10-degrees at arm's length) and follows it down by only about a half an hour.

Sweeping toward Earth

The reason for Venus' rapid fall toward the sun is that the planet will pass inferior conjunction on March 27.  That means Venus, which orbits the sun well inside Earth's orbit, will be between us and the sun [Video].

The setup causes Venus to go through phases, much like our moon.

For several weeks before and after March 27, Venus is relatively close to Earth, and its thin, backlighted crescent becomes large enough to resolve in steadily-held 7-power binoculars. The planet's narrowing crescent is best seen right around sunset or in bright twilight when a bright sky helps to reduce the planet's brilliant glare.

As it swings close to Earth in the coming weeks it will grow to nearly 1/30 of the apparent diameter of the Moon -- a waning crescent visible with telescopes, binoculars, and just possibly even with the naked eye. But the crescent is also thinning, so its magnitude fades during the month from -4.6 to -4.0.  In daylight, with a telescope and really clear, steady air, you might even observe the cusps of the crescent extending all the way around to form a ring.  This effect results from sunlight diffused and scattered through Venus' upper atmosphere.

On March 6, the disk of Venus is 14-percent illuminated, but by March 21 the planet will have grown 16-percent larger while its phase will have thinned to a striking 2-percent. By March 25, look for it to twinkle in the twilight because its crescent is so thin!  A telescope will reveal it to be a hairline sickle by then, only 1-percent sunlit.

A rerun

Venus goes through an eight-year cycle of apparitions, meaning its behavior this year closely duplicates that in 2001, 1993, 1985, and on back.

And only once per cycle do we in the Northern Hemisphere get a brief window of opportunity to glimpse Venus both at dusk and dawn on the same day.  This happens because at this particular apparition Venus passes widely north of the sun at conjunction, so observers at mid-northern latitudes can pick it up as a morning object before it disappears from the evening sky

MANILA, Philippines â€" The German government has offered 25 million euros (about P1.5 billion) in the form of a debt swap to support health projects related to the Millennium Development Goals, the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) said.

The debt swap will serve as the Philippines’ contribution to the MDGs, as the health projects concern HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, said Economic Planning Secretary Ralph Recto, director general of the NEDA.

Under Germany’s reformed process for debt servicing, the Philippines will no longer have to pay certain debts but use the money to finance health programs, Recto said, citing information from the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

I'm not happy to hear one comment in the news that said "nangangarap na sana dumami pa"

Yes, Subic is gaining. But imagine the number of lives including that family that are affected in  each boat that parks there, because its' company got hit by the global economic downfall.

No. this is not good news for me.

To dream that you abandon ship, indicates that you need to move on and let go. An aspect of your emotion is holding you back and it is time to leave it behind. Alternatively, consider the phrase "jumping ship", to indicate changing of sides.

Anonymous Diary Blog / To Her Unknown Mom
March 10, 2009, 09:09:25 AM
Dear Mommy,

I am in Heaven now, sitting on Jesus' lap. He loves me and cries with me; for my heart has been broken. I so wanted to be your little girl. I don't quite understand what has happened. I was so excited when I began realizing my existance. I was in a dark, yet comfortable place. I saw I had fingers and toes. I was pretty far along in my developing, yet not near ready to leave my surroundings.

I spent most of my time thinking or sleeping. Even from my earliest days, I felt a special bonding between you and me. Sometimes I heard you crying and I cried with you. Sometimes you would yell or scream, then cry. I heard Daddy yelling back. I was sad, and hoped you would be better soon. I wondered why you cried so much.

One day you cried almost all of the day. I hurt for you. I couldn't imagine why you were so unhappy. That same day, the most horrible thing happened. A very mean monster came into that warm, comfortable place I was in. I was so scared, I began screaming, but you never once tried to help me. Maybe you never heard me. The monster got closer and closer as I was screaming and screaming, "Mommy, Mommy, help me please; Mommy, help me." Complete terror is all I felt. I screamed and screamed until I thought I couldn't anymore.

Then the monster started ripping my arms off. It hurt so bad; the pain I can never explain. It didn't stop. Oh, how I begged it to stop. I screamed in horror as it ripped my leg off. Though I was in such complete pain, I was dying. I knew I would never see your face or hear you say how much you love me. I wanted to make all your tears go away. I had so many plans to make you happy. Now I couldn't; all my dreams were shattered. Though I was in utter pain and horror, I felt the pain of my heart breaking, above all. I wanted more than anything to be your daughter. No use now, for I was dying a painful death. I could only imagine the terrible things that they had done to you. I wanted to tell you that I love you before I was gone, but I didn't know the words you could understand.

And soon, I no longer had the breath to say them; I was dead.I felt myself rising. I was being carried by a huge angel into a big beautiful place. I was still crying, but the physical pain was gone. The angel took me to Jesus and set me on His lap. He said He loved me, and He was my Father. Then I was happy. I asked Him what the thing was that killed me. He answered, "Abortion. I am sorry, my child; for I know how it feels." I don't know what abortion is; I guess that's the name of the monster. I'm writing to say that I love you and to tell you how much I wanted to be your little girl. I tried very hard to live. I wanted to live. I had the will, but I couldn't; the monster was too powerful. It sucked my arms and legs off and finally got all of me. It was impossible to live. I just wanted you to know I tried to stay with you. I didn't want to die. Also, Mommy, please watch out for that abortion monster. Mommy, I love you and I would hate for you to go through the kind of pain I did.

Please be careful.

Love,
Your Baby Girl

RP has highest percentage of women execs

THE Philippines has the highest percentage of women holding senior management positions at 47 percent in the world, according to the latest research from Grant Thornton International.

The research revealed that women still hold less than a quarter of senior management positions in privately held businesses globally. Twenty-four percent of senior management positions are currently held by women -- a figure identical to 2007 and only a marginal improvement from 2004 when only 19 percent of senior level positions were held by women.

Thirty-four percent of privately held businesses globally have no women in senior management. Russia has the highest percentage of women holding senior management positions at 42 percent, while Thailand came in third at 38 percent. (EHL)

The lowest percentage continues to be in Japan where only seven percent of senior management positions are held by women. Also appearing low down the league table are Denmark (13 percent) and Belgium (12 percent).

Lily Linsangan, audit partner at Punongbayan & Araullo (P&A) and head of the firm’s Business Risk Services group said: “Women in the Philippines have really broken the proverbial ‘glass ceiling’, not only in the corporate world but also in government. As an auditor of more than 25 years, I have not encountered an all male management team. In our own firm, eight of the 18 partners are women and five of the seven members of the management committee are female.”

Figures from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) show that women have steadily outnumbered men in executive positions. In 2002, the ratio was 1.86 million females to 1.4 males in supervisory and executive positions.

In 2006, the ratio was 2.257 million women managers to 1.629 million men. By 2007, there were 2.281 million female managers to 1.677 million males.

Women have become most successful in increasing their share of senior management roles in Turkey (up from 17 percent in 2007 to 29 percent in 2009) and Mexico (20 percent in 2007 to 31 percent). The biggest falls were in Brazil, where the figure fell from 42 percent in 2007 to 29 percent in 2009, and Hong Kong (falling from 35 percent in 2007 to 28 percent in 2009

Box jellyfish

Box jellyfish venom is the most deadly in the animal kingdom and has caused at least 5,568 recorded deaths since 1954.[2] Most often, these fatal envenomations are perpetrated by the largest species of box jelly, Chironex fleckeri, owing to its high concentration of nematocysts, though at least two deaths in Australia have been attributed to the thumbnail-sized irukandji jellyfish (Carukia barnesi).

Box jellyfish are abundant in the warm waters of northern Australia.

If swimming at a beach where box jellyfish are known to be present, a bottle of vinegar is an extremely useful addition to the first aid kit. Following a sting, vinegar should be applied for a minimum of 30 seconds.

A box jellyfish sting can kill a human. Acetic acid, found in vinegar, disables the box jelly's nematocysts that have not yet discharged into the bloodstream (though it will not alleviate the pain) [6]

How To Tips / Re: Think Twice When Eating Tilapia
March 10, 2009, 07:06:50 AM
Researchers from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, however, reported that their study on farm-raised tilapia revealed that the fish contained a very low amount of Omega-3 fatty acids (the good fat) and a very high content of Omega-6 fatty acids (the bad fats).

If this is true, then consuming tilapia, even 2-3 times a week might be hazardous to health, especially to patients with any of these conditions: arthritis, coronary artery disease, asthma, allergies, auto-immune diseases, because the bad fats can cause an exaggerated inflammatory response and cause endothelial damage to the arteries of vital organs of the body, like the heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, skin, etc.

The contents of tilapia were scientifically analyzed and compared to bacon, showing the following data:

tilapia, 26 grams of protein; bacon, 0.07 gram;
and, tilapia’s fat, 3 grams; bacon, 100.76 grams.

Tilapia is a source of niacin, potassium, selenium, Vit B-12 and phosphorus, and found to have very low level of mercury contamination;

bacon is loaded with 1,000 mg of sodium (salt), 166 mg of cholesterol, and a preservative called nitrite, which is suspected to be a cancer-inducing chemical.

The President's decision does much more than expand funding for stem cell research. It heralds a shift in the government's view of science, ushering in an era that promises to defend science â€" and the pursuit of potentially useful treatments â€" against ideology. "It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology," Obama said in his opening statement.

Without discounting the moral concerns that many Americans have in regard to using embryos â€" which many consider to be fully realized human life â€" for scientific research, Obama said that moral values do not necessarily preclude the study of embryonic stem cells, particularly those obtained from the pool of 400,000 or so embryos currently stored in IVF clinics around the U.S., most of which will be discarded. "I believe we have been given the capacity and the will to pursue this research â€" and the humanity and conscience to do so responsibly," he said. (Read "The Year in Medicine 2008: From A to Z.")

MANILA, Philippines - A 15-inch whale shark, locally known as butanding, has been found in Sorsogon. Conservation group World Wide Fund for Nature-Philippines (WWF-Philippines) reported yesterday that the rescue of what could be the smallest whale shark in the country, and perhaps in the world, might lead to answers to the mystery of where the sea creatures breed.
