Inspiration & Hope / Re: The Depth of Grace
October 23, 2013, 10:54:56 PM
Most Bizarre Concept

Grace, defined as the "free and unmerited favor of God," is one of the most powerful and most bizarre concepts that exists. God, the Supreme Creator and Superintendent of the Universe, wanted so desperately to have a loving relationship with His obnoxious little creations (who spend most of their lives consciously or unconsciously doing the exact things that He asks them not to do) that He devised a system that would allow us into His holy presence. And He did this not by becoming a pitiful little weasel-God who bypasses the necessary rules to get what He wants. Instead, He showed Himself to be a strong, loving, consistent God who was willing to sacrifice Himself in order to maintain the proper ethical system established on the foundation of His character.

All this so we could be near Him…

All this when we still hated His guts…

Another Large, Flightless Bird

Throughout the first day, we were still excited whenever we saw more of the giraffes and zebras and oryx and kudus and elands and ostriches. But, by the end of the second day, they had become part of the scenery. There were just so many of them, and they were everywhere. It became a joke to usâ€""Oh, how exciting, another large, flightless bird," we'd say in a deadpan voice. "Oh, wonder of wonders, another striped pony-wannabe." What was once awe-inspiring had become mundane.

In the same way, certain words, over time, lose the power they once hadâ€"commitment, sacrifice, sin, morality. "Grace" has become one of these words. We sing by rote about God's "Amazing Grace"â€"letting fly by the remarkable truth of its being bestowed upon a "wretch like me" ("wretch"â€"another of those words that just doesn't communicate all it used to). When we see someone committed to a false religion or living a hedonistic lifestyle, we casually throw out a "There but by the grace of God go I" without stopping to ponder the depth of the reality of the statement.

(Excerpted from 40 Days of Discovery, a devotional series written for Fellowship Community Church in Centennial, Colo.)

The van was old and dirty, and getting dirtier every mile we drove down the dusty road. We were on the edges of our cracked vinyl seats, eyes peeled, looking for the first signs of life. Suddenly, up ahead in the distance we saw movement. We looked at each other with wide grins. As we drew closer, the object grew larger and larger, and when it saw us it began to runâ€"long, loping strides. We both cheered! The giraffe was the first sign of wildlife that we had seen in Namibia (other than the occasional monkey or warthog running along the side of the road.) Bill and I were ecstatic!

After the giraffe, we saw zebras and oryx and kudus and elands and ostriches. Each new species was a cause for awe and wonder. Then we went looking for the more elusive big gameâ€"lions, elephants and black rhinos.

ehehe, it means one reached REM sleep or had achieved multiple rounds of REM sleep. ;)

the brain is so complex, it is said that the brain is most active when we are sleeping. interesting noh? even when we are "resting", our mind is in full drive. ;)

afterwards we went to the guitar center (its a local guitar store) with don don. i was so amazed at his skills. i asked him and don don to play something for me. andre is skilled in acoustic guitar and electronic guitar, whereas si ondoy don don is more into the bass guitar. don likes metal music whereas si andre likes soft rock, alternative rock. hehehe.

yesterday my brothers and i went to walmart to buy some house supplies. bought a new door mat (a colorful one that says "welcome"), some cleaning supplies, car supplies, food supplies etc. what was supposed to be only a 30 minute shopping trip turned out to be an 1-2 hour trip looking around at the things on sale. my younger brother don don went to the storage box areas. he was adamant in finding plastic boxes to store his game consoles, he doesn't want them to just be left in the open in our basement. kani lagi si dondon he has so many game systems. in fact he has every game system that i think ever came out: nes, snes, sega genesis, n64, gamecube, xbox, playstation, playstation 2, playstation 3, xbox 360 and other older systems. mo ingon sija, "these are true collectables, kuya. i have to have them."

hahaha!

my youngest brother, si andre, and i went to the electronics section looking at the new plasma and led tvs that were on sale. i saw the 60 inch samsung plasma tv , with wifi capabilities and all the gadgetry associated. it was priced at $1,900. Not bad. Ingon si Andre, "Kuya...that would look good in the living room..."

bitaw. i thought. i'm going to get that as their christmas present this year. it will be a good tv for them to play their new xbox one game console that they're also going to get on christmas. hehehe!

So, as we were putting things in the cart, ingon pod si andre nako, "kuya, so, are you going to leave us again, soon?" ingon ko, "yes, 'doy, going back on thursday." wa sija mo tingog. and i started to feel nostalgic for them already. so i kissed my little brother's forehead. ingon lang ko, "its okay. you can always text , call me whenever, for whatever..okay."

we got back home at around 10 pm. i cooked steamed broccoli and beef sabao for them last night.

i love them so much. and i'm glad i was able to come home to visit and spend some time with them.

andre has grown. he's now my height. :P

I know that he might have said some things that were mean, and made threats, but let us forgive him and pray for him -- so that God's light and love will bring a sense of healing in his life.

In our ignorance we put down groups of people whose belief systems and rituals are contrary to our own. We should not do this, instead, love them and pray for them, nonetheless. This doctrinal statement is a breath of fresh air for me. God loves us all equally.

1938 There exist also sinful inequalities that affect millions of men and women. These are in open contradiction of the Gospel:

Their equal dignity as persons demands that we strive for fairer and more humane conditions. Excessive economic and social disparity between individuals and peoples of the one human race is a source of scandal and militates against social justice, equity, human dignity, as well as social and international peace.
#1429
1937 These differences belong to God's plan, who wills that each receive what he needs from others, and that those endowed with particular "talents" share the benefits with those who need them. These differences encourage and often oblige persons to practice generosity, kindness, and sharing of goods; they foster the mutual enrichment of cultures:

I distribute the virtues quite diversely; I do not give all of them to each person, but some to one, some to others.... I shall give principally charity to one; justice to another; humility to this one, a living faith to that one.... and so I have given many gifts and graces, both spiritual and temporal, with such diversity that I have not given everything to one single person, so that you may be constrained to practice charity towards one another.... I have willed that one should need another and that all should be my ministers in distributing the graces and gifts they have received from me.
#1430
1936 On coming into the world, man is not equipped with everything he needs for developing his bodily and spiritual life. He needs others. Differences appear tied to age, physical abilities, intellectual or moral aptitudes, the benefits derived from social commerce, and the distribution of wealth. The "talents" are not distributed equally.

Bible Study / Re: The Catechism on: Mercy and Sin
October 23, 2013, 12:47:49 PM
1848 As St. Paul affirms, "Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more."But to do its work grace must uncover sin so as to convert our hearts and bestow on us "righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."Like a physician who probes the wound before treating it, God, by his Word and by his Spirit, casts a living light on sin:

"Conversion requires convincing of sin; it includes the interior judgment of conscience, and this, being a proof of the action of the Spirit of truth in man's inmost being, becomes at the same time the start of a new grant of grace and love: "Receive the Holy Spirit." Thus in this "convincing concerning sin" we discover a double gift: the gift of the truth of conscience and the gift of the certainty of redemption. the Spirit of truth is the Consoler."

1847 "God created us without us: but he did not will to save us without us." To receive his mercy, we must admit our faults. "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Bible Study / The Catechism on: Mercy and Sin

1846 The gospel is the revelation in Jesus Christ of God's mercy to sinners. The angel announced to Joseph: "You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." The same is true for the Eucharist, the sacrament of redemption: "this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

Faultless Lord, enduring death for me,
You have consummated the debt of my sins:
Your sacrifice of forgiveness was absolute!
Grant me the strength to also forgive others,
To excuse their transgressions against me.
So I may truly reflect this spiritual fruit,
Obliterate any persistent feelings of malice.
Let each trespass end as a closing chapter,
My continuing on the road of righteousness.
Forgive my sins as I aspire to forgive others.
You are truly archetypical of forgiveness.
You are a most forgiving Lord!

Listen to your passions

If I could ask you what makes you angry, joyful, excited or passionate, what would you say? Take note of when your emotions are moved; these times can be a sign of your God-given purpose.

I get fired up about the godless condition of the world. When I hear about little children being abused, I get angry. When someone tells me a story about loyal love, I am deeply moved. An exquisite arrangement of words on a page fills my heart with passion. A story of someone’s heartbreak grieves me. Talking about Christ stirs me up. When coupled with my talents, these passions point in the direction of my purpose of written and spoken communication about things that deeply impact people on a spiritual and emotional level.

Pray. Ask God to show you the things that move you and make a list. And remember, He wants you to discover His purpose for you more than you do.

Lastly, consider that your purpose is not just about you; it’s about what God wants to do through you. Therefore, if you ignore or neglect your dissatisfaction, what others say about you, your gifts and your passions, you are not only betraying yourself, but betraying God; because He has called you to a purpose and wants you to walk in it â€" for others and for your own joy.

Also consider that since God has called you, He is completely able to reveal your purpose to you, and He will as you diligently seek Him (Heb. 11:6).

Listen to your gifts

I’ve never liked math. Whenever I come within five feet of a math problem, I break out in hives. Numbers have never been my thing and my guess is that they never will be because God created me with different gifts. Even though I can’t do math, I can write, paint, draw, sing and communicate well. These gifts are also road signs to where God is directing me.

Have you ever considered your talents and gifts? Do you get a kick out of soccer? Are you a strategic thinker? A great listener? Can you motivate others to action with your words? Are you skilled at building things? I suggest making a list of the things and activities that interest you in which you excel. You can also ask yourself, “What’s the one thing that I do better than others?” This can also clue you in to your God-given purpose.

The gifts God gives us are like little seeds planted inside us, but for them to grow we have to use them. This means that if you can’t identify which “Gift Seeds” God has given you, try doing new things that interest you. Through these new experiences, God will reveal more to you about who you are and how He has called you to serve Him.

Listen to others

One of my closest girlfriends lights up when she talks about mentoring young women. She also has tremendous business sense. I’ve suggested that perhaps God may use her to start a mentoring organization or ministry. When I shared my thoughts with her, she said, “You know, I’ve heard that from lots of people.”

Just as dissatisfaction can be a road sign from God to show you your purpose, listening to what others say about your gifts can do the same; so when someone notices or comments on one of your talents, take note. God may be trying to tell you something through His people.

There are times, however, when we shouldn’t listen to what others say. But when what they say about us agrees with our passions, internal convictions, gifting and what God has already revealed to us, it can be a solid indication of our God-given purpose.
#1444

Listen to your dissatisfaction

We’ve been taught to believe that dissatisfaction is a bad thing, and that we should do everything possible to avoid it. Shove it down. Ignore it. Act like it doesn’t bother us. Take a pill. Plaster on a smile. Buy something new, or decide that misery is part of “bearing our cross.” But above all, don’t consider that God might be using it to make us uncomfortable so we’ll want to swim in another ocean where our gifts can shine.

Don’t get me wrong; dissatisfaction can be a result of spiritual warfare (Eph. 6:10-12) and not an indication that we are out of God’s will. But it can also be a road sign that He has another purpose for us. So if you’re miserable in your current career or job, (and you have been for a long time), you’ve prayed, sought counsel from others, looked for guidance through Scripture, and you’re still miserable, consider that God may have another plan.

Inspiration & Hope / Discovering Your God-Given Purpose
October 23, 2013, 07:01:59 AM
There once was a man who netted three trout from a mountain stream and carefully placed them side-by-side on a thick patch of grass. Before he removed them from the water, they were like a liquid ballet in motion. Fluid. Graceful. Vibrant. Alive.

After he netted them, it was another story.

As the trout lay on the grass, they were motionless. Their eyes were fixed. They gasped for air, and they looked â€" and acted â€" stupid.

The man noticed they seemed unhappy, so he talked to them, hoping that his encouragement would change them.

“Little fish, don’t be sad. You’ll like the grass. Just try it out for a while.”

No movement. No response. No change.

A few more seconds passed. The man’s neighbor walked by. “Hey, Bob! Come and check out these fish!”

Bob sauntered over and the man explained that he was certain the fish could adjust. “I’m sure they could prosper here on the grass. Don't you agree?”

“Why not?” Bob replied. So he also tried to tell the fish it would be good if they learned to like the grass. After all, he liked the grass. Why shouldn’t they?

Still, the fish didn’t blink. They just lay there looking dumber by the second.

Finally, a little boy approached exclaimed, “What are you doing? Put them back! They can’t be all they’ve been created to be when they are out of the water.”

Finally convinced, the man carefully placed each fish back in the stream. After splashing for a split second, all three swam away effortlessly. Again, it was like a liquid ballet. What ease! What grace! What beauty!

In that moment, the man realized that no matter how long the fish lay there they would never adjust to the grass, and would never be satisfied â€" no matter how much he (or anyone else) told them otherwise. Even if the fish tried to convince themselves they could learn to like the grass, they never would, and they would never prosper. In fact, they would eventually die.

Do you feel like a fish out of water? Your prolonged dissatisfaction, God-given gifts, passions and the voices of others could be telling you that you were created for another purpose. And like these fish, if you feel like you are dying inside, listen up. It could be just what you need to push you into another, more satisfying ocean.

Know that the virtue of patience is the one that more than any other insures our perfection. We should practice it with our neighbor, but we should practice it still more with ourselves. Those who aspire to pure love of God have not as much need to practice patience with others as with themselves. To acquire perfection, one must not look for temptations but simply tolerate them with patience; humility is reinforced with this tolerance. We must face the truth: we are poor people who cannot do much good, but God, Who is infinitely good, is quite happy with the little good that we do.

I was adviced that the work of Rotary Club is a lot efficient and well coordinated, we should consider their efforts as worth supporting.

Many salutes to them ! May God bless all of them... !

Good Morning Tita!

Yes, I woke up in my old bed in my bedroom here in New Jersey. When I went downstairs, I saw my mommy dearest and daddy dearest downstairs eating breakfast with my ondoy Andre and ondoy Don. And our 3 dogs, too. haha. The feeling of FAMILY and HOME. I'm thankful to LORD for this...this most precious feeling and gift. I'm happy also to know that some sort of stability is coming back to Bohol, and that friends and family are doing they can to stabilize. I hope you're in good health and your family , Tita. You're in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless us all.

Love,
Bran Lorenz

Dearest beloved Manong Hubs,

Please take into consideration all the friends and fellow learners you've made here in Tubag Bohol. Your leaving this forum affects all of us because we all have made deep connections here, sharing each others' passions, peculiarities, and interests. You cannot leave Tubag Bohol, because I will not allow you to. I have already communicated with Mr. Econg to cease his deplorable postings that affect many people. It has been my prayer that peace be restored here, that we all come together and in peace. My tenure here in Tubag Bohol, which started back in summer's eve of 2007 was delightful. There have been many characters, personalities that were here before my arrival and one thing that was unique of Tubag Bohol was the dispensation of information and the intrigue of many personalities. As we chart and pave through this path that is -- online forum -- we learn a lot from each other. There have been many people who came to this forum, established rapport, and left. The challenge of the minds was a frequent phenomenon.

When you came to this forum, I once thought that you were a young individual and found interest in debating with you. You and I, yes, had our differences of opinion in the past, but through the many intellectual interactions with you -- I realized that : 1) you're not young , but rather are filled with wisdom and concepts for all of us -- most especially for me -- to ponder upon. 2) Life lessons. You may not know this, but I have truly cherished you here, Manong. You've taught me to learn to swallow my pride, and yes that was one thing that I had a lot of, in excess of. Foolish pride, which was actually a barrier for me to establish true friendships here in my own life -- I was always a competitive fellow. Through indirect and direct admonition from you and others, I realized some qualities and traits within myself that should be modified. Humility was always a concept you forwarded to us here in Tubag Bohol, either through indirect messages and postings.

Through these past 5 years that I've interacted with you and learned from you, Manong, I've developed a deeper understanding and love of things that I have not shared. Most importantly through spiritual things. You may not know this but I remember when you once shared with me and others here that you were an ex-seminarian, a Salesian, to be exact, and have remembered some of the life experiences you've shared with us -- interspersed tho it may have been -- throughout the many forums and subforums in Tubag Bohol. I guess i have developed a deep fond affection and respect for you. I don't want you to leave Tubag Bohol. I forbid it. I won't accept it. You will stay. You will continue to be part of this -- Family. You can't become part of a family and just leave like this as if we don't matter as if -- we're just something to be tossed away. Just know that peace will be restored. Till then, I will pray that you will find it in your heart to stay here...and continue to be a lively part of our family. We all have our own pecularities, sometimes, some irritable aspects (i know i have a lot! he he), but nonetheless, we are all family. And we are all beloved by each other.

I love you Manong. We all love you. Ajaw kami ilabay ra intawon. :(

Sincerely Yours,
Always,
Bran Bran

I am grateful to The Lord My God for the grace and gift of family. I am enjoying my little vacation here in New Jersey (before I go back to Chicago). To be around my dearest Mommy, Daddy, and Ondoy Don and Ondoy Andre...Thanks, Lord!

thank you doc lorenz

Thanks should be given to all the tireless efforts of the volunteers in Bohol. The civilian volunteers, the doctors, nurses, pharmacists, medical reps, paramedics, nursing students, medical students, physical therapy students who are volunteering their times. Bravo. My cousins who are medical doctors, nurses, and volunteering in treating patients in the ground ... I commend to them a lot. I will do what I can to help the victims in areas that are not direct as they. I only hope and pray that many others who will donate in the form of relief goods, medical supplies and finances can do so with a generous heart. May God bless all of us!

I think, that after all of these destructive effects, it manifests the honorable and admirable character of the BOHOLANO. We, in the end, thanks God, come together to help each other and our people. May God sustain this.

Life is too short. Life's unexpected variables are unpredictable. We should all show our Love to each other, our family and relatives, our loved ones and friends.

PRAYER FOR A PEACEFUL SPIRIT:

Pleaes Lord, slow me down,
Ease my pounding heart,
Quiet my racing mind,
Steady my hurried steps

Amidst the confusion of my days,
Grant me the calmness of Your peace,
Help me to know the truly
Restoring gift of sleep

Teach me the art of taking time off,
To slow down to see the beauty in Your Creation
To chat with a friend
To read a few lines from a good book

Remind me each day
That there is  more to life
than increasing its speed,
It is living each moment with you and for you

Let me look upwards
Into the branches of a towering oak
And know that it grew great and strong
Because it grew slowly and well.

Please Lord,, slow me down,
Teach me to be gentle and humble of heart,
Fearing nothing of this world,
as You are my Lord.
Grant me rest for my soul
Now and eternally with You.

Amen.

Most of all, I ask that everyone here forgive those who may have tresspassed them and that God forgives us for our own tresspasses. May God heal any broken hearts, any grudges, any pains in our own soul. And may The Lord Jesus remove them from our hearts and allow a spirit of forgiveness, healing to come in. May God heal Bohol , its people. May God Bless all of us...every single one.

i am a man of high pride. because of what i have accomplished in the business world. i think it is time to humble myself. kay matam-is ang pag pa ubos. anyway, pila ka adlaw na lang ug di na ko mosamok ninjo. i am just waiting for the revelation on the 19th. after that, i will be gone for a while. try to see if i can realize my goal of a million bucks in 3 years. i think i can do it.

THAT'S what I want to hear / read. Ing gi ingon sa Ginoo, ang mappataas ijang ipauboson, ang tawo sa ubos, ijang ipatason.

There is nothing wrong in enjoying the graces and blessings of the Lord Our God. However, it is right to be humble about it, Manong.

Let's focus our prayers and energy in helping those who we can with what we can.

May God Bless Everyone...!

We are actively seeking donations and help. If you can help, volunteer and send relief aid and goods (food !) do so at the local red cross or at the Diocese of Tagbilaran. May God bless us.

I talked to my aunt who works with the DILG. The DILG is working actively and tirelessly right now with the provincial government as well as the national government to administer relief efforts throughout the affected areas, not limited to: Loon, Maribojoc, Inabangga, Lila, Loay, Dauis, Baclayon etc. I know that my aunt had talked with Mar Roxas as well as talked to President Aquino on the ground.

Bohol, from what i heard, has been truly hit hard. The cost to restore bridges, roads and local infrastructure will cost around 500 Million Pesos. As for the churches, that will be a church expense as they are not part of the government. However historical treasures could be funded. Bohol, right now, is thankful.

Many volunteers from Cebu are flocking to Bohol. Thanks to the doctors, nurses, medical reps, and human services volunteers from CEBU, NEGROS, LEYTE, MINDANAO who are coming to Bohol in the waves.

GOD BLESS BOHOL.

Write to your heart's content, Balong. Remember, my friend, the words of the Lord Jesus Christ, "Be perfect like Your Heavenly Father..who Is Perfect."

Okay. I'm going out now with my family. But my word of advice and love for you, Sir Econg, is: FORGIVE and PRAY.
