What makes you Catholic?  The clothes or jewelry you wear?  Going to Mass on Sundays?  Being raised a Catholic?  If you were put on trial for your faith, would there be enough evidence to convict you of being a Catholic?  This chilling video, written by Bob Rice and produced by Outside da Box, challenges you to think about what really makes you a Catholic.

Description:

Residents are seen walking through a flooded street in Manila, on September 15. Surprise overnight monsoon rains, enhanced by the passage of Typhoon Sanba, caused flooding in the Philippine capital, forcing hundreds to flee their homes

Parts of Manila were under six feet (1.8 metres) of floodwater on Saturday after heavy rain lashed the capital overnight, forcing more than 400 people to flee their homes, officials said.

There was also a strong typhoon lurking in the region, and although it was moving away from the Philippines and towards Japan, forecasters said it was adding to the wild weather.

"Typhoon (Sanba) has no direct effect but the storm enhanced the southwestern monsoon so we will continue to experience rains," said government meteorologist Gary de la Cruz.

Low-lying coastal areas of the capital were hardest hit, forcing people to leave their homes, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

At least 10 domestic flights were cancelled and universities in affected areas called off classes, the council said.
Although the heavy rain eased later in the day, de la Cruz said the Philippines could continue to suffer heavy downpours until Tuesday.

So far, Sanba has caused only one fatality in the Philippines, a fisherman who ventured out to sea on September 12 but whose dead body was recovered two days later, the disaster management council said.

Storms and flooding from torrential rain affected more than two million people in August and killed scores.

The Philippines endures about 20 major storms or typhoons each rainy season.

BAD HABIT #4. Unsafe sex practices

Mga Paraan para Makaiwas sa HIV/AIDS:

A - Abstinence from sex (Huwag makipagtalik)
B - Be faithful to your partner (Maging tapat sa asawa o kinakasama)

Unsa man ni encouraging living-in partners?

Letter C is VERY DEBATABLE. Dili ni 100% true information. There are/ were exceptions.

Letter D is questionable. Kanus-a man daw nakipagsex ang tawo nga dihay gigamit nga NEEDLE? Weird. Di lamang naho maimagine. Hahahaha

una, ang legal rights or privileges ba kaha nga involved intawon.  dugay gaipon ang duha as a couple, through thick and thin, they took care of each other, were happy together, and suffered together.  tepok ang usa.  kinsay ahat nga mopakita to claim all the rights and privileges of the deceased (insurance, estate, etc.)?  ang relatives nga wa gani manumbaling sa kalisod sa ilang paryente sa buhi pa.  gi-disown pa gani intawon.

this is one aspect that was considered when same sex marriage was thought out.  it gives protection to the one who carried out the role as the other half of a couple, regardless of the gender.

Take note of this:

"Oleander is a small, yet eye-catching plant, and its flowers are known to come in a wide assortment of colors. One aspect (perhaps already well-known) of the plant is its high level of toxicity. A single leaf consumed by an infant or child is often fatal. It is even known to hold its toxicity after drying. The symptoms experienced from the ingestion of this plant are horrific and terrifying, placing it third on our list. These include nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, drowsiness, poor circulation to extremities, seizures, tremors, collapse, slowed pulse, irregular heartbeat, pupil dilation, bloody diarrhea, coma, death and suicidal depression. Yes… you read that correctly. In Southern India, there are innumerable reported cases of suicide after consuming mashed oleander seeds. Think about that the next time you decide to throw a bit of oleander in your dumpling recipe!"

"Easter lilies are a very common species in the Liliaceae family. Although native to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan and Taiwan, this lily is found in gardens all across the globe. Growing up to one meter (3.28 ft) in height, and bearing a number of trumpet shaped, white, fragrant and outward facing flowers, it is a keepsake to the art of gardening.

Easter lilies, although beautiful, are also poisonous, especially to cats, at an extreme level. It is also poisonous to humans due to the alkaloid Lycorine, found in the bulbs and stems. Symptoms of poisoning due to ingestion of Easter lily (likewise for almost all other true lilies) include abdominal pain, salivation, shivering, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Wouldn’t we all love a bit of that around Easter time?"

Have your umbrellas close at hand.

A tropical depression is seen to intensify within the next six to 12 hours as it moves toward the Philippines, the weather bureau said Tuesday.

"The active low pressure area east of Mindanao has developed into a tropical depression and was named 'Karen,'", the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomic Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 11 a.m. update.

It noted, however, that the weather disturbance is "still too far to affect any part of the country."

Karen was spotted 700 kilometers east of Tandag, Surigao del Sur at 10 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center.

It is forecast to move northwest at 7 kph.

Karen is expected to be at 600 kilometers east of Siargao by Wednesday morning, 460 kilometers east of Borongan, Eastern Samar by Thursday morning, and at 390 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes by Friday morning, Pagasa said.

Moderate to heavy rainfall (10 to 20 millimeters per hour) is seen within the 300-kilometer diameter of the tropical depression.

Naa ba puy inganis injo?

Gikan sa website nga listverse.com:

"The Rosary Pea, also known as Crab’s eye or Jumbie bead, is a slender perennial climber that twines around trees, shrubs and hedges. The plant is native to Indonesia, but grows in most parts of the world. It is best known for its seeds, which are used as beads, and have a bright red to arrange color with a single black spot (not unlike an inverted black widow). The poison contained in the plant (abrin) is very similar to the poison ricin, found in some other poisonous plants. There is one main difference between these poisons, and that is that abrin is about 75 times stronger than ricin. This concludes that the lethal dose is much less, and in some cases as little as 3 micrograms can kill an adult human. Using seeds as beads even poses a huge threat, as people have been known to die, just from pricking their fingers on the drill bits used to drill the tiny holes in the seeds."

Weird and Extreme / Frilled Shark
September 11, 2012, 12:50:44 PM

The frilled shark (Chlamydoselachus anguineus) is one of two extant species of shark in the family Chlamydoselachidae, with a wide but patchy distribution in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This uncommon species is found over the outer continental shelf and upper continental slope, generally near the bottom though there is evidence of substantial upward movements. It has been caught as deep as 1,570 m (5,150 ft), whereas in Suruga Bay, Japan it is most common at depths of 50â€"200 m (160â€"660 ft). Exhibiting several "primitive" features, the frilled shark has often been termed a "living fossil". It reaches a length of 2 m (6.6 ft) and has a dark brown, eel-like body with the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins placed far back. Its common name comes from the frilly or fringed appearance of the gill slits, of which there are six pairs with the first pair meeting across the throat.

The Deep Sea Hatchetfish or Argyropelecus gigas has large sunken eyes that are permanently looking upwards towards the surface. Due to the upcoming El Niño weather phenomenon, state weather forecasters urged government agencies Tuesday to implement water conservation measures to ensure enough water for farming and irrigation.
PAGASA Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section head Daisy Ortega said their models show the dry spells may particularly affect the eastern parts of Visayas and Mindanao, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.
Ortega was quoted in the report as saying the concerned government agencies should ensure adjustments to their irrigation systems in anticipation of dry spells.

For her part, PAGASA forecaster Elvie Enriquez said Filipinos may have to expect less rain and a longer summer in 2013 due to El Niño, which is characterized by warm dry spells.

"Mas kaunti kung inaasahan natin volume of water. Mas kaunti, hindi naman (totally walang ulan), mas kaunti lang sa inaasahan (We can expect less volume of rainwater, we are not saying there will be no rain at all)," she said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Enriquez also said there is a chance the summer in 2013 will be "prolonged."

"Ang summer mas prolonged, maaring dumating mas maaga o matapos nang late (Summer will be prolonged. It may arrive earlier than usual or end later than usual)," she said.

El Niño likely to be felt in Visayas, Mindanao

On Monday, PAGASA said El Niño may already be felt gradually especially in Visayas and Mindanao due to below-normal rainfall in these areas, dzBB's Gatus reported.

Last August, PAGASA said that the El Niño forecast by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center (NOAA-CPC) show El Niño conditions developing around August to October season, continuing through the rest of 2012."

"Increased areas experiencing drier than normal rainfall are likely during October," it warned.
PAGASA added the initial impact of the likely developing El Niño during September may include below-normal rainfall in the eastern portions of Northern and Central Luzon, including Palawan, some portions of Western and Central Visayas and Western Mindanao.

The rest of the country will likely experience near- to above-normal rainfall conditions, it added.
PAGASA noted the atmospheric circulation in the tropical Pacific remained near-normal in July 2012, but also noted a "persistent warming" in the tropical Pacific Ocean trending towards an El Niño condition since June.
"Warmer sea surface temperature strengthened in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific ocean, a typical development stage of an El Niño," it said.

Also, it noted warmer temperatures below the surface of the entire equatorial Pacific Ocean, a "good indicator" to sustain the evolving El Niño condition.

"Dynamical and statistical model forecasts suggest the El Niño will likely develop in August or September," it said.

El Niño characteristics

PAGASA said El Niño periods are usually marked by below-normal rainfall conditions across most areas of the country during the last quarter of the year (OND) and early months or first quarter (Jan-Mar) of the following year.

It said the climate pattern in the country during July and August was generally influenced by the moderate to strong westerlies, which reflect an active southwest monsoon activity, generating enhanced rainfall over most areas of the country.

"This characterized the seasonal variability of El Niño impact, where the reverse happened during the early stages of the warm episode, an enhanced rainfall in any time within the months of July, August, September instead of below-normal rainfall condition," it said. â€" TJD, GMA News

Despite El Niño, 4 tropical cyclones expected this month
Philstar

MANILA, Philippines - Despite the developing El Niño phenomenon, the state weather bureau warned that three or four tropical cyclones could hit the country this month.

Nathaniel Servando, administrator of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), said yesterday that cyclones normally cross Central Luzon, the Bicol region and the Visayas during September.

Servando said two destructive tropical cyclones â€" “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” â€" in 2009 happened during an El Niño period.
Ondoy and Pepeng dumped excessive rain over Luzon, including Metro Manila, triggering massive flooding that displaced thousands of families.

“Areas under Type I climate experienced excessive rainfall during the development of El Niño in 2009,” Servando said.
He said earlier that currently there is “60 to 70 percent probability” that El Niño phenomenon will develop this year.
“For the period June-July-August, the sea surface temperature anomalies were greater than 0.5 degrees Celsius,” Servando said, citing conditions for El Niño.

However, PAGASA said some parts of the country will begin to experience El Niño-like weather condition this month.
Servando said “below normal” rainfall is expected for Luzon, Central Visayas as well as Northern and Central Mindanao this month.

The country experienced the worst El Niño in 1997 to 1998 in which the estimated damage to agriculture reached more than P3 billion.

Reports said drought affected 68 percent of the country, compared to only 28 percent in 1972 and 16 percent in 1982.
Reports said the 1997-1998 El Niño caused a decrease in the live coral cover nationwide by about 49 percent due to the coral bleaching event associated with the warming of sea surface. - By Helen Flores (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

Enrile: Responsible lawmaking requires ‘dissecting’ controversial RH bill

MANILA, Sept. 6, 2012-Lawmakers have a responsibility to “dissect” a bill that will have an impact on generations to come, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said on Wednesday.

Enrile made the statement as he castigated the main sponsor of the “reproductive health” (RH) bill, Sen. Pia Cayetano, for attempting to cut him off from asking questions to Senate Majority Floor Leader Vicente Sotto III. Sotto had just finished a series of speeches against the measure, Senate Bill No. 2865.

“It is our duty as responsible people to dissect this bill, no matter how unpopular our position is, to determine whether the policy embedded in it is a right policy or a destructive policy for this nation. And no one can lecture to me about these things. I know my history. I’ve learned it by rote, it’s hard labor. And I resent being questioned about [and being asked to] state my purpose. Who are you to challenge my purpose? I tell you, I’m going to dissect it,” Enrile said.

It was the turn of the opposing side, led by Sotto, to argue against the bill after the sponsorship period of Cayetano. Under Senate rules, a senator has the right to interpellate or ask questions to a colleague who had taken the floor to deliver a speech.

Cayetano, however, wanted all questions directed to her, being the sponsor of the RH bill, despite the fact that Sotto was given the floor for his turno en contra. Cayetano wanted to cut the debates and accused her colleagues of derailing the bill, but Sotto said passage was difficult because the measure is controversial and divisive.

Enrile said no lawmaker had a monopoly of wisdom on what constitutes the national interest.

“I have been in this Senate for a long, long time already, and I have never been asked to state the purpose of my interpellation. And I think that if they will check my record in the Senate since 1987, when I was privileged to join the Senate until today, I never used any dilatory tactics or any manner of delaying the passage of any bill. And I think the record will show that every question I asked here had relevance to the issue at hand,” Enrile said.

“[W]ith due respect to the lady senator, I know that she is eager to pass this law. But I have my own notion of what the national interest is. Nobody has a monopoly of wisdom about the national interest. I do not claim that I am the only one who considers this country his country. And I have an interest to protect, my notion of what the future if this country will be.”

He added: “I hope that I will not be shackled. And I resent any implication that I am here to derail or obstruct the passage of this measure. I challenge anyone here to show e that I have ever delayed the passage of any measure here. Nobody can dictate to me, whoever you are.”

Enrile said he wanted to discuss the experiences of other countries whose population control programs have led to economic stagnation due to aging populations and shrinking workforces.

“[F]or instance, what is the experience of Russia? What is the experience of Italy? What is the experience of Spain? What is the experience of Poland? What is the experience of China, Korea, Japan and the rest of the world? Isn’t that a pertinent question here to be asked so that we will know the impact of this bill on the lives of the people of this country? My grandchildren and their [great]-grandchildren will be affected by this bill in the future. I have arrived as anyone else to protect them. I will not be here when the impact of this bill will happen. And neither the sponsor nor any one of us,” he said.

Sotto earlier bared RH lobbyists’ connections to foreign pro-abortion groups, claiming the bill would legitimize abortion by a provision on post-abortion care (Section 3, letter i of Senate Bill No. 2865). Moreover, RH programs are already covered by 23 laws and government regulations, with nearly P8 billion in funding this year.

These render the RH bill unnecessary, Sotto said. (Dominic Francisco)

Existing laws, nat’l budget already cover ‘RH’

MANILA, Sept. 5, 2012â€"Here are the facts that the pro-RH lobby would rather obscure. Issues that will supposedly be addressed by the “reproductive health” (RH) bill are already covered by 23 laws and government regulations. Moreover, the 2012 budget already has P8 billion for RH programs.

Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III delivered the last of a series of speeches against the RH bill Wednesday on the Senate floor, saying effective implementation of government health programs was needed instead of the proposed RH law. “Ang dahilan kung bakit hindi ipinasa ng mga nakaraang Kongreso ang panukalang batas na ito ay dahil nga wala namang pangangailangan para rito,” he said.

Questioning why P3.5 billion would be needed annually for the RH bill, Sotto pointed out that the 2012 General Appropriations Act already contains P7,876,314,212.00 in funding for RH programs, as follows:

1. Health Human Resource Development â€" P1,905,105,000.00;
2. Capability Building â€" P14,431,200.00;
3. Support Maternal, Newborn at Child Health at Nutrition (MNCHN) Grants â€" P167,000,000.00;
4. Health Facilities Enhancement Program to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of reducing maternal deaths â€" P5,078,000,000.00;
5. Women’s Health at Safe Motherhood Project II, for maternity or birthing clinics â€" P122,857,000.00;
6. Family Health and Responsible Parenting Leveraging Services, for family planning supplies, MNCHN Commodities â€" P300,000,000.00;
7. Commission on Population, Grants, subsidies and contributions for population programs â€" P148,389,000.00; coordination of population policy and programs â€" P220,252,000.00;
8. Family Health and Responsible Parenting, including seminars for birth spacing and responsible parenthood; reproduction of the Manual of Operation on Adolescent Health -P500,000.00; Family Health Guide â€" P35,000,000.00; Community Health Team (CHT) Organization, Training and Deployment Manual â€" P31,250,000.00; Community Health Team Guidebook (Helping Families Access Health Care); and
9. Health Promotion â€" P153,230,000.00.

Sotto also pointed to existing laws, administrative orders, presidential decrees and government programs addressing reproductive health:

1. R.A. 9710 or An Act Providing for Magna Carta for Women
2. Republic Act No. 9262 or Anti-Violence against Women and Children
3. Republic Act No. 8504 or Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998
4. AO 2008-0029 Implementing Health Reforms for Rapid Reduction of Maternal and Neonatal Mortality
5. Children’s Health Program of the DOH
6. Family Planning Program of the DOH
7. Prevention and Management Control of Abortion and its Complications (PMAC)
8. PD No. 965 or A decree requiring applicant for marriage license to receive instructions on family planning and responsible parenthood
9. R.A. 7883 or the Barangay Health Workers Benefits and Incentives Acts of 1995
10. R.A. 7160 or The Local Government Code of the Philippines
11. AO No. 2010-0036â€"The Aquino Health Agenda: Achieving Universal Health Care for all Filipinos
12. Women’s Health and Safe Motherhood Project ng DOH
13. Republic Act No. 8504 or Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998
14. Republic Act No. 7875 o ang National Health Insurance Act of 1995
15. Republic Act No. 9502 o ang Cheaper Medicine Act
16. Executive Order No. 453 o Directing the Enrolment of 2.5 Million Indigent families pursuant to E.O 276
17. AO No. 2010-0010 o ang Revised Policy on Micro Nutrient Supplementation to Support Achievement of 2015 MDG Targets to Reduce Maternal Deaths and Address Micronutrient needs of other population groups
18. Botika ng Barangay Program of the DOH
19. PD No. 79 Revising the Population Act of Nineteen Hundred and Seventy One
20. PhilHealth Circulars and Policy Guidelines
21. CCT program of the DSWD
22. PD No. 79 Revising the Population Act of Nineteen Hundred and Seventy One
23. Administrative order No. 2012-0009 -National Strategy Towards Reducing Unmet Need for Modern Family Planning as a means to Achieving MDGs on Maternal Health

The lawmaker said the Health department should instead implement provisions of the Magna Carta of Women, which already provides for comprehensive health services and access to family planning.

Sotto again criticized the proposal to list contraceptives as “essential medicines” when condoms and intrauterine devices do not cure diseases. He also zeroed in on the RH bill’s provision providing for care for post-abortion complications, saying this was incompatible with the measure’s supposed reiteration of abortion restrictions and is being inserted at the bidding of foreign pro-abortion groups.

The discussion became heated when RH sponsor Sen. Pia Cayetano questioned Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile’s interpellation. Enrile castigated Cayetano, saying that in all his years in the Senate, he was never questioned on his motives for interpellation or was on record as having delayed any bill.

Sen. Ralph Recto, for his part, warned that controlling the population could have serious consequences on the economy.

He also expressed concerns that RH bill provisions ensuring “universal access” and the creation of a new set of sexual and reproductive rights would allow minors access to contraceptives. (Dominic Francisco)

More questionable provisions in RH bill unearthed; religious mandate hit

MANILA, Sept. 6, 2012â€"A bill purporting to provide Filipinos a “choice” actually leaves a number of sectors with no other choice but to bow down or else face imprisonment.

In Wednesday’s debates over the reproductive health (RH) bill, Sen. Ralph Recto bared that local governments, hospitals, religious institutions, and private schools would be forced to act against their consciences under the measure, all in the name of RH.

Under Senate Bill No. 2865, penalties for those who refuse to extend RH services include imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of up to P100,000.

Recto pointed out that more than 50% of local government funds are already spent on health. Another mandate on RH will add to the burden of local government units (LGUs) that have been saddled with mandates under the Local Government Code without funding support from the national government.

“Ano ba ang tingin ninyo pagdating sa LGU mandate? Kung ayaw sumunod ni Governor Vi?” asked Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, noting that Recto’s wife is the governor of Batangas.

“May kulong,” Recto answered. “[There are provisions], some of them written not so well, na kapag humingi sa ‘yo at ayaw mo bigyan, may kulong.”

“Ay matindi,” Sotto said.

“Sapilitan, kaya nga mandate. May pilitan eh, may kulong pa nga pag ‘di mo ginawa eh,” Recto said.

Recto said this extends to religious institutions such as private schools that will be required to teach sex education using materials crafted by government agencies.

“Di bale kung sa publiko. Ngunit ‘di dapat pilitin ang mga private schools lalo na kung Katoliko sila na ituro ito sa ganoong edad,” Recto pointed out.

Likewise, religious hospitals should not be forced to provide RH services against their consciences, he said.

Recto pointed to another conceptual problem of the bill â€" the provision on the “ideal family size” of only two children.

Recto said two children will only replace their parents. The Philippines, meanwhile, has the advantage of average fertility at three children, which should bode well for the economy, he said.

“Sa 2015, sinasabi ng mga dalubhasa sa ekonomiya that we will be hitting a point in our population na mas maraming magtratrabaho kaysa sa mga bata na inaalagaan at mga seniors ,” he noted.

In Europe, the problem is a shrinking productive population, leading to problems in social security viability and immigration issues.

He also asked: “Bakit kaya ang titulo ng batas ay reproductive health? Hindi ba reproductive is to reproduce, hindi dapat magbawas ng fertility?”

In that case, half of the budget for the bill should be allotted to those who want to have children, he said.

Recto also warned that the RH bill would lead to higher Philhealth premiums to cover RH services under Philhealth, aside from forcing employers to provide free contraceptives to their workers. (Dominic Francisco)

Kaning video is a video on an algal bloom of Noctiluca scintillans. A type of dinoflagellate.

Noctiluca scintillans, commonly known as the Sea Sparkle[1], and also published as Noctiluca miliaris, is a free-living non-parasitic marine-dwelling species of dinoflagellate that exhibits bioluminescence. The bioluminescent characteristic of N. scintillans is produced by a luciferin-luciferase system located in thousands of spherically shaped organelles, or “microsources”, located throughout the cytoplasm of this single-celled protist. Nonluminescent populations within the genus Noctiluca lack these microsources.

Weird and Extreme / Venezuelan Poodle Moth
September 04, 2012, 10:04:25 AM

The Venezuelan Poodle Moth is a possible new species of moth discovered in 2009 by Dr. Arthur Anker of Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, in the Gran Sabana region of Venezuela. It bears similarities to the Diaphora mendica, the Muslin Moth, and might belong to the lepidopteran family Arctiidae.

Rest in peace, Sir. The Philippines is now sad to have lost a public official who does not only deserve commendation for the work he is doing but of his integrity and honesty in leading DILG.

Testimony of Tatian the Syrian to Matthew 16:18

"Simon Cephas answered and said, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah: flesh and blood has not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee also, that you are Cephas, and on this rock will I build my Church; and the gates of hades shall not prevail against it" (The Diatesseron 23 [A.D. 170]).
