 They should be in school.

Instead, they left their homes to work overseas only to endure beatings and missed meals in strangers’ homes.

Passed on as 24-year-olds by "escorts" when they left Manila between last year and this January, six teenaged girls who worked as househelp in Jordan shared their stories on Monday after coming home from months of staying in a cramped Filipino shelter.

As similar as their reasons for leaving, the girls, aged 13 to 17 when they left the country, suffered similar experiences.

"They would slap me, hit me on the head, kick me," said one of the six, who were repatriated on Sunday and Monday afternoon.

"Sometimes they would deny me food," said the 13-year-old, the eldest in a brood of four who decided to find a job abroad to help her jobless parents raise their family.

All unknowing victims of human trafficking through the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the teenagers returned home with two other female overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) through what Senate President Manuel Villar called his long-time "personal crusade" to help distressed migrant workers fleeing abusive employers.

One of the repatriated workers, 29-year-old Jeanelyn Martinez of Bacolod City, brought along her Jordan-born two-year-old son.

"I have long been seeing cases like these in my travels, though I have been doing it privately. But I decided to let the public know so that our government will see the situation. They're too young, how come they were able to pass through the airport? They were illegally recruited and there are many cases like this," Villar told reporters at the airport Monday afternoon.

"And this happens not just in Jordan but in all countries where many Filipinos are employed. If you put them all together, there will be thousands of these cases," said the senator, who encountered the teenagers on a recent visit to Jordan.

The six minors, all Mindanao natives, said they were recruited by an agency that offered them work as domestic helpers in Jordan.

"I applied [with] the agency so that I could help my parents," said the youngest of the group, who left her native Datu Montawal, Maguindanao in January.

The system seemed attractive: One was asked to pay P1,500 as placement fee, while another said she was told to repay her fare and processing expenses to the agency by surrendering three months’ salary.

The girls appeared to have received all the help they could get just to leave the country without hitches. While they clearly looked underage, they got through immigration with a tourist visa and a passport that put their age at 24.

"There was a cop who assisted me at the airport. He told me to tell the immigration officer that I am going to visit a relative there," said an 18-year-old Cotabato City native who left the country when she was a year younger.

"I was told to say I am going to visit an aunt in Jordan," another teenager said.

But they had barely settled to the burdensome chores in their assigned homes when the beatings began.

"That's why I decided to run away," said one of the teens.

They all ended up in an OFW shelter at the Philippine embassy in Jordan, crammed for months with some 200 other migrant workers counting on government to bring them home.

On top of funding their plane fare, Villar promised to further help the group go back to their provinces.

"People should know about this so it will stop. In the Senate, there are only two things we can do: investigate and recommend prosecution for those at fault and create a new system [to address illegal recruitment], although under our system that's already disallowed and the implementation is the one that is not being done," Villar said.

He was, however, reluctant to talk further about launching another Senate inquiry, what with the chamber's hands full with investigating controversies like the scandal-tainted national broadband network deal.

"We should investigate, but government officials are usually not allowed to appear so maybe in this case they will do the same," he said.

He called on government agencies concerned with OFWs -- the labor department, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration -- to improve their system in repatriating abused OFWs and curbing the incidence of illegal recruitment.

The senator also proposed a "realignment of budget in the executive branch for repatriation," noting the OWWA had to little funds for this purpose.

To government, one of the minors said: "I hope you can help the others whom we left there in Jordan. There are still many like us."

The rice crisis might become worse in the next few months when store shelves are emptied of the commodity.

Countries that supply cheap rice to the country, like Thailand and India, don't want to release their excess stocks, reserving them for their own people in anticipation of a worsening food shortage.

The rice queues in the country will become longer in the coming weeks and months.

If the Arroyo administration continues to mishandle the rice distribution, there could be food riots in the streets in the coming weeks or months.

When that happens, President Gloria should pray the food riots don't reach Malacañang.

* * *

What brought about the food crisis in the country?

There's not enough food to feed a population that will soon reach 100 million.

There's a scarcity of land for food production because landowners would rather build subdivisions than farms. And, of course, some Pinoys are lazy. They prefer making babies to planting rice or camote.

The poorer the family, the more children it has.

The Catholic Church, which has decreed that family planning using artificial methods is sinful, is partly to blame for the overpopulation.

The Church doesn't care how this country will become in a few years because of its huge population.

A big jump in the crime rate, food scarcity much worse than now, and few spaces to live in will result in overpopulation.

The Church is apparently only concerned about increasing the number of its followers, the heck with overpopulation.

When I was younger, I thought the late Mao Tse Tung was wrong when he said, "religion is the opium of the people."

But with the way Filipino Catholics blindly follow their church's decree on family planning, he could be right.

I have a small farm in Puerto Princesa, a good 30-minute ride by car from the city, which I have planted to various vegetables and other food crops.

My neighbors haven't taken the cue from me to plant their idle lands to food. Instead, they burn the forests nearby to make charcoal that they sell to the market.

From my farmhouse, my heart bleeds when I see a forest being burned to clear the way for a kaingin or a clearing to plant upland rice, or to make charcoal.

Puerto Princesa prides itself as a "city in the forest" as it is surrounded by forests.

In a few years, if charcoal makers and kaingeros are not held in check, there will be no forest to surround the beautiful city.

After Speaker Prospero "Boy" Nograles said his piece on why he filed libel charges against radio broadcaster Alexander "Lex" Adonis that sent the latter to prison, now it's my turn to make a retort.

Boy, you have made your point.

Why not intercede and request for a pardon for Adonis since you are very close to President Gloria?

Malacañang security were caught by surprise when some 20 farmers staged a lighting rally at the Palace Tuesday.

At around 10:15 a.m., the farmers of Task Force Mapalad (TFM) assembled in front of the New Executive Building, near the main Palace building where a Cabinet meeting would be held at 11:00 a.m.

Wearing only jeans, the farmers held placards and chanted "Ipamahagi lupa ng Arroyo [Distribute the Arroyo lands]." Slogans expressing their opposition to ethanol planting and calling on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to give them their lands were also painted in red on their bare chests.

Lani Factor of TFM said the farmers have been camping out at the Department of Agrarian Reform building in Quezon City since April 17.

She said they were able to get into the Palace complex by boarding the jeepney to Malacañang.

She said that eight years ago, the President promised to distribute some 1,000 hectares of land owned by First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo under the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP).

However, Factor pointed out that of the original five or six Arroyo haciendas, three remain undistributed.

One of the properties, Hacienda Bacan, has been converted to agro-industrial use, mainly for the production of ethanol, a move Factor said TFM believes is intended to evade distributing the land to agrarian reform beneficiaries.

Another Arroyo property, Hacienda Grande, was subdivided and titled to a number of corporations, individuals, a foundation and a homeowner's association after CARP took effect in 1988, Factor added.

Still another hacienda, Paraiso in La Carlota City, was subdivided into parcels of around five hectares each. However, the Department of Agrarian Reform ruled in favor of the farmers and issued a notice to place the property under CARP coverage.

However, the Arroyos protested the notice of coverage, delaying the land’s distribution through litigation, Factor said.

"We urge the family of the First Gentleman to please respect and observe the law, and the promise of the President to distribute all these lands…It is a compelling moral issue for the country's highest leader who promised to set the example for social reform," Factor said in a statement.

The rally was held close to an hour before the legislative-executive development advisory council meeting presided over by the President and where among the topics to be discussed was the proposed extension of CARP, which is set to expire on June 10.

After about 10 minutes, police and members of the Presidential Security Guards stopped the rally. Police flagged down a passenger jeepney and asked the farmers to board it.

World Daily News / Why the Pope wears red shoes
April 21, 2008, 09:10:25 PM
Benedict XVI's red loafers have drawn attention since he became Pope in 2005.

Dubbed the "Prada Pope" after the supposed maker of the shoes, Benedict has been seen wearing the ruby red shoes during his trips and other important events.

The loafers are seen as a statement of his desire to demonstrate continuity with the symbols and history of the Church.

His predecessor, Pope John Paul II, wore brown shoes, which stood out. Though wearing red shoes is a papal tradition, the practice is optional.

Theology Professor Lawrence Cunningham of Notre Dame, in a podcast for NPR.org, said the Pope's red shoes symbolize the blood of martyrdom.

"Traditionally, in the Catholic Church, the color red commemorates the blood of martyrdom ... Fire and red are identified with the Holy Spirit," Cunnigham said.

The shoes cost around $640 a pair, but the Pope gets them for free.

A group of reproductive health advocates on Friday urged the government to immediately implement a stringent and long-term population program to minimize the adverse effects of the looming food crisis.

The Forum for Family Planning and Development Inc. (FFPDI) also called on the Roman Catholic clergy to rethink their opposition to artificial birth control methods.

According to the group, the increasing population will only undermine the efforts of the government to bring about economic development, especially in the countryside.

"Population and food production are two intertwined factors. You cannot ignore the other and hope to solve the country's woes," said Benjamin de Leon, FFPDI president.

By 2050, the Philippines would already be the 10th most populous country in the world based on the projection of the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), the group said.

At the current 2.1-percent annual growth rate, the group said the population would have grown to at least 69 percent more from the current 80 million at the time.

"Millions of Filipinos suffer from poverty due to large and unplanned families. Unless we give priority to the problem of ballooning population, every effort to counter poverty would be pointless," De Leon said.

He added, "Unless the government implements a serious population program and the Church abandons its strong opposition to family planning, rice and food crises will continue to plague the country as demand for food increases."

De Leon said statistics from the Department of Agriculture showed that the national daily consumption of rice was currently at 33,000 metric tons, about 4,000 metric tons more than the country's rice consumption a few years ago.

In only a year, he said, the country's per capita consumption of rice rose from 103.16 kilos in 2007 to 134 kilograms this year.

He said the data indicated that 21 percent of children under 5 years old would be underweight in the next few years.

De Leon said that as the population increased, land devoted for food production decreased as arable and agricultural lands gave way to industrial, residential and commercial use.

He said the problem of diminishing agricultural land was further worsened by the rising demand in biofuels.

"The PRB data likewise projected that by 2050, the country will have only 28 percent natural habitat, or land that has not been converted to human use," he warned.

By that time, he said, at least 296 Filipinos will have to share with each other every square kilometer of land in the country.

The body of an overseas Filipino worker was found by Hong Kong police in the northwestern coast of Lantau Island over the weekend, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Friday.

Quoting Philippine consul general in Hong Kong Alejandrino Vicente, DFA spokesman Claro Cristobal said the body was identified by a relative as that of Vicky Flores, 32, of Batangas.

He said nothing else about the circumstances surrounding the Filipina's death.

“The consulate has asked the police to conduct autopsy and further investigation. It has also referred potential witnesses to give statements to the police,” Cristobal said in a text message.

“Employer of deceased has offered assistance for repatriation of the remains after authorities complete their investigation,” he said.

Cristobal also said a sister of the deceased is now in Hong Kong under the care of the consulate.

The population of the Philippines reached 88.57 million at a census in August last year, up from 76.5 million in 2000, and the country's top economic planner said policies needed to be reviewed.

However, the government of the Roman Catholic nation is unlikely to switch to promoting artificial birth control, experts said.

The Philippines has one of the highest population growth rates in the region, with at least three babies born every minute. The growth dilutes economic gains and the country does not produce enough food to feed its people.

"The population is increasing and it means that government has to more vigorously implement its population policy, which is responsible parenthood and the advocacy for natural family planning," Economic Planning Secretary Augusto Santos told Reuters on Thursday.

"I think the population commission will have to review its policies," he added. "We really need greater efforts. It means we have to work harder to make the economy function more properly and more smoothly."

At least one-third of the people are poor and the number of poor is growing faster than the population.

Last month, government data showed that 28 million people, about a third of the population, were subsisting on less than $1 per day in 2006, up 16 percent from 2003.

But Santos said artificial birth control remained a sensitive issue.

In a nod to the powerful Catholic church, the government emphasises natural family planning over artificial methods, and experts said there was not likely to be any change in this in the immediate future.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who came to power in 2001 with the backing of the church, has consistently emphasised natural family planning. Government booklets on responsible parenting make no mention of condoms, pills or intra-uterine devices.

MADE IT CLEAR

"She has made it very clear she will not purchase contraceptives, she will not promote any other method except what the church approves and she has very strong links with the most conservative elements of the church," said Dr. Alberto Romualdez, a former health secretary.

Still, the National Statistics Office said the annual population growth rate was 2.04 percent between 2000 and 2007.

Although that fell short of the aim of bringing the growth rate below 2 percent, it was a drop from the average annual growth of 2.34 percent between 1990 and 2000, officials said.

Romualdez said it was not good enough.

"For me, 2.04 percent is well within the normal variation of population growth rates with or without intervention by government. For me, 2.04 means that the government has not done anything."

Other experts, however, said it was a beginning.

"I think it is a significant drop," said Benjamin de Leon, President of the Forum for Family Planning and Development Inc. "But I still have to see in this administration a policy that informs people of the need to space their children, the need to plan their families."

According to the United Nations Population Fund, the average population growth rate in Asia is 1.1 percent.

Solita Monsod, professor of economics at the University of the Philippines, said the problem did not lie with the church.

She said most Filipinos wanted to regulate their families and providing access to information and funding for civil service groups involved in family planning was key.

"Survey after survey has shown that when it comes to family planning, the church does not make a difference," Monsod said. "The people don't have access. Give them what they want and then the population problem will take care of itself."

Yes absolutely Brod Brown, its a world wide crisis,it resulted in food riots in Haiti, Bangladesh and other countries in the past weeks. Part of the problem why theres rice shortage in Philippines because rice farmers can't afford to buy seedlings, fertilizer and can't even afford the labor cost.Government subsidy ,thats what these farmers need.Give them the fertilizer they need and I am sure they produce the rice.We are farmer here in U.S corn and soybeans producer and I tell you what fertilizer price like the gas price went up.Unsa may mahimo nato kung segi nalang ta import ug bugas sa Pilipinas mosamot  ka ot ot atong nasud.Dapat i prioritize sa goberno ang rice production sa Pilipinas.I think Philippines will import rice here U.S. shocking di ba.Daghan jud nuon rice diri sa U.S it mostly grow in southern part of the country like some part of missouri and Arkansa.I doubt that even mais bugas sa atua ingmahal sad kay record high price ang tanan commodity karon.

Yes you are right Miss Raquel, if only our government give enough budget to our farmers  and apply modern techniques to cultivate the land yet Philippines would not be affected on this rice shortage that the whole world face today, considering that we got very productive land and a tropical climate which is very favorable for our farmers to cultivate the land compare on  other countries. As we see that 75 % of our population are farmers, and if only our government never  pushed for the enactment of the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) and the entry of the Philippines to the World Trade Organization (WTO) yet  our  sovereign Filipino  people will not suffer this  long queues to buy cheaper rice in military-guarded outlets of the National Food Authority. The GATT/WTO have been used by imperialist countries to leverage semi-colonial and backward countries to remove state subsidies to agriculture and cause the conversion of agricultural lands to real estate speculation and production-for-export.Because of this programs, the  people are hungry and restless,  and millions are bound to explode in collective protest against the Arroyo regime.

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines -- Three daughters of a religious sect pastor in Ilog, Negros Occidental, had their father arrested for allegedly sexually abusing them.

Senior Inspector Gabriel Gutierrez, Ilog police chief, said on Thursday the 45-year-old pastor of the religious sect was turned over to them by a policeman and the chairman of the village where the family lived, after the scandal broke out Monday.

Gutierrez said the eldest of the three daughters, now 22, said she was sexually abused by her father, on November 3, 1993, when she was only eight years old.

Gutierrez said the two other daughters of the pastor, 18 and 14 years old, also claimed to have been raped by their father on April 8 and 17, 2007, respectively.

The pastor volunteered to stay at the Ilog Police Station, pending the filing of rape charges against him, for fear of being harmed by members of the family of his wife. He, however, denied having abused his daughters.

Gutierrez, however, told reporters that the pastor admitted having mauled his 18-year-old daughter who left their home in June 2007 without permission, and returned December 29, with her live-in partner.

Police investigations showed the 18-year-old, who was allegedly molested twice by her father, fled to escape the molestations.

Showbiz & Celebrity / Finding Prince Charming
April 16, 2008, 07:05:38 PM
Does Lea Salonga still believe in fairy tales?

“Happy ever after doesn’t exist,” she says. “After meeting and marrying Prince Charming, there’s still a lot of work to be done to keep the relationship going smoothly.”

The Tony award-winning actress was speaking her mind in connection with her forthcoming appearance in the stage version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical adaptation of “Cinderella”â€"produced by Broadway Asia Entertainment and which runs from July 29 to Aug. 24 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

What’s her definition of a “Prince Charming?”

“Someone who sweeps you off your feet, lives in a castle and will take care of you,” she muses. “My own prince did just about everything except for the castle part. We did that together.”

What challenges her most in portraying Cinderella?

“She is such a well-known fairy tale character. Everyone in the audience is going to have preconceived notions of who and what she is. My job will be to find something I can relate to in that character, as well as inject as much humor as I can without it being ridiculous,” Lea says.

She adds, “I have to find out why she’s able to keep a relatively sunny disposition, in spite of her living situation. The other challenge will be to stand tall beside my leading man (Peter Saide) who’s 6’4”. Wow!”

No doubt Lea will be standing proud with or without the glass slipper. Whatever the role, she wears it so well.

RP’s David Beckham?

Dingdong Dantes is more than flattered that he’s being tagged as “The David Beckham of the Philippines” because of his stunning Bench billboards.

“It’s an honor to be compared to an icon and respected athlete,” he says. “But I’d rather be remembered for my effectivity as an actor. Being substantially unique is not an easy task but with the passion that I have for what I’m doing, I hope it will be enough to make a difference.”

Dong as a damn good actor and … a sex object? I hear no objections.

Different tunes

Sunshine Cruz couldn’t hold back her tears when she was asked to give hubby Cesar Montano a message in “Boy & Kris” (episode airs Wednesday, April 16, 10:30 a.m., ABS-CBN). In her past interviews, Shine said Buboy is courting her again. Now she’s singing a different tune.

“I’m happy for him. I heard he has moved on already,” she said. I clarified this with Buboy. He replied, “May nagsabi lang kay Shine na narinig daw niyang sinabi ko na naka move on na ko pero without details. Tiyempo naman may tampuhan kami that time so Shine got affected.”

Cesar added, “I love Shine and our kids. What I want to move on from are intrigues and focus on positive things like my new show ‘Singing Bee,’ my new endorsement and my trip to Europe and the US with Shine in July.

“I need to take my wife out of here even for awhile para makahinga kami pareho ng ibang hangin.”

All the beleaguered couple need is a change of scenery and not a change of heart.

Boy’s ‘Love Life’

While I was confined in the hospital for over a week, I listened to Boy Abunda’s Star Records CD, “Love Life (Life Songs & Life Stories)” over and over again. It soothed my weary spirit.

The album includes “You Changed my Life in a Moment” (Ogie Alcasid), “Song for Mama” (Charice Pempengco), “When You Wish Upon a Star” (Aiza Seguerra) and “It’s My Turn” (Erik Santos).

Interspersed between songs are Boy’s piercing conversations with celebs about success, struggles, love, childhood, friendship, happiness and good-byes. There’s also a heartwarming talk with Boy’s beloved Nanay.

As I reflected on my life while having endless blood transfusions, Boy’s CD reminded me to be grateful for my second lease on life and turned my thoughts into prayers. “Love Life” is now certified gold. Goes very well with Boy’s golden heart.

* * *

Personal: Congrats to my dear kumareng Liza Endaya and kumpareng Benjie Felipe (of “The Buzz”) on the christening of my inaanak Jaera Pamela. May she grow up to be as wonderful as her parents.

My heartfelt thanks to Angel Locsin and Becky Aguila for being heaven sent!

Merci beaucoup to the best PR man aroundâ€"Allan German, for being a friend over and beyond the call of duty.

BLACKSBURG, Va. â€"  The darkness was broken by the flickering of a white candle, lit at the stroke of midnight. Soft weeping and the solemn strains of "Taps" were all that broke the silence of more than a thousand people gathered around the 32 memorial stones honoring the dead.

And in those first few moments of Wednesday, on Virginia Tech's main campus lawn, the wounds of a community still trying to heal broke open once again, as a day of mourning at the university officially began.

It has been exactly one year since a mentally ill student killed 32 people and himself in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. And while this close-knit campus has worked hard to move on, the anniversary of the killings has left many struggling to cope.

A ceremony honoring the lives of those who perished during Seung-Hui Cho's rampage was planned for later in the morning in front of the memorial, where the candle lit at midnight will continue burning for 24 hours.

Other small, reflective gatherings were to take place during the day, with a candlelight vigil scheduled for the evening. One group of students planned to lie down in protest of Virginia's gun laws in the afternoon.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine ordered state flags flown at half-staff, and a moment of silence at noon followed by the tolling of bells.

Many people weren't sure how to observe the anniversary of a tragedy that was as unifying as it was shattering. It drew a university already known for its school spirit even closer as the depth of the loss registered with students and faculty.

"Just in interacting with people, you can tell," said Heidi Miller, 20, a sophomore from Harrisonburg who was shot three times and was one of six survivors in a French class. "It's like a big question mark. Should we be in mourning all day, or should we try to do something normal?"

Some of the families of those killed said they couldn't bear to attend the official events and planned to grieve privately.

Bryan Cloyd, whose daughter Austin was killed, hopes to plant an oak tree with his wife Renee to honor their daughter's life. It is a way of looking toward the future, he said, rather than reflecting on the horrors of last April 16.

As a Virginia Tech professor and Blacksburg resident, Cloyd has faced reminders of his daughter every day. He feels her presence often, in different spots on campus, and in the butterflies that he believes carry Austin's spirit and seem to follow him everywhere since her death. He believes Austin would want the community to honor her life, but then move forward.

"I won't be able to walk my daughter down the aisle at her wedding. I won't be able to bounce her children on my knee," he said softly. "And I don't think it's helpful to dwell on that, because where that leads is just more sadness. I think what's helpful to do is to dwell on what can be. What can we do with what we have?"

Commemorations of those who were killed started Tuesday. A small bouquet of white carnations lay outside Norris Hall, where Cho and 30 others died. A dozen white roses ringed Caitlin Hammaren's memorial stone. A tiara, a note with 21st birthday wishes, and an empty sparkling grape juice bottle were left at Leslie Sherman's memorial.

At the Blacksburg Jewish Community Center, about 60 people attended an evening ceremony to mark the end of their year of mourning.

A congregant lit a candle in honor of each slain victim, representing the light and power of the person it honored. Following the service, attendees walked around the block, an action meant to symbolize the beginning of their emergence from mourning, Rabbi Zahara Davidowitz-Farkas said.

"The dis-ease that has been our last year is dissolving itself slowly," she told mourners. "... Each of us grieves in our own way and in our own time. Healing and renewal cannot be forced, nor can it be coerced. It comes only where we are ready."

The anniversary of the shootings and how it will impact the victims' families has weighed heavily on Gerald Massengill, who led a governor-appointed panel that investigated the slayings. He has tried to focus his thoughts on the changes that have been made to the state's mental health system and school security procedures in light of the panel's recommendations.

"I think a lot of us have been anticipating April the 16th with some reservations as to how it would impact us," he said. "And I think as it's gotten closer, what I have tried to consume myself with are those things ... the lessons that we think we could learn from Virginia Tech."

At the student center Tuesday, visitors meandered through a gallery displaying a few of the many thousands of condolence gifts sent to the university and photos taken after the tragedy.

One photo on display was taken by Caroline Merrey, who escaped death by jumping out a second-story window in the class of engineering professor Liviu Librescu.

Merrey, who has graduated, wrote in a note accompanying her photograph that she often thinks about Librescu, who was killed as he tried to hold shut his classroom door to allow students to escape out the windows.

"That is the motivation I have," she wrote, "to make it through even the hardest day."

Every girl dreams that one day she will find a boy that does these things for her. Even the
smallest action can have the BIGGEST impact in someones life.

• give her one of your t-shirts to sleep in.

• leave her cute text notes.

• kiss her in front of your friends.

• tell her she is gorgeous..

• look into her eyes when you talk to her.

• let her mess with your hair

• touch her hair.

• just walk around with her.

• "FORGiVE HER FOR HER MiSTAKES"

• look at her like she`s the only one you see.

• tickle her even when she says stop.

• hold her hand when you`re around your friends.

• when she starts swearing at you, tell her you love her.

• let her fall asleep in your arms..

• get her mad, then kiss her.

• tease her and let her tease you back.

• stay up all night with her when she`s sick.

• watch her favorite movie with her.

• kiss her forehead.

• give her the world.

• write her letters.

• let her wear your clothes.

• when she`s sad, hang out with her.

• let her know she`s important.

BAGHDAD â€"  A kidnapped British journalist was rescued by Iraqi troops on Monday after two months in captivity in the southern city of Basra, the Iraqi military said.

Richard Butler, who worked for CBS News, was found with a sack over his head and his hands tied inside a house in Basra, Lt. Gen. Mohan al-Fireji said. He said Butler was in good condition.

Butler was found during an Iraqi military sweep in the Jibiliya area, a Shiite militia stronghold in Basra, 340 miles southeast of Baghdad.

Defense ministry spokesman Mohammed al-Askari said that an army patrol conducting a search came under fire from the house where Butler was being held. One of the gunmen was wounded in an exchange of fire and another captured while two men managed to escape, he said.

Butler was later shown on Iraqi state television laughing and greeting his rescuers.

"Thank you and I'm looking forward to seeing my family and my friends at CBS and thank you again," Butler told al-Askari.

He described the soldiers' performance as "brilliant."

"The Iraqi army stormed the house and overcame my guards and they burst through the door," Butler said. "I had my hood on which I had to have on all the time and they shouted something at me and I pulled my hood off."

In London, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband welcomed Butler's release and said he was "very grateful to (Iraqi) security forces for the professionalism of the task they have undertaken."

He said Butler was in the care of the British consulate in Basra.

Butler was kidnapped along with his Iraqi interpreter on Feb. 10 in Basra. The interpreter was later released. Iraqi police and witnesses said the two men were seized by about eight masked gunmen wielding machine guns who stormed a hotel in the city.

In recent days, Iraqi forces have started house-to-house sweeps for arms, weapons, drugs and criminal elements in several parts of Basra, Iraq's second-largest city. The military said it has uncovered an improvised explosive device factory, along with significant arms caches and numerous roadside bombs, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades.

Serious fighting in Basra abated since a failed government offensive last month to dislodge militia groups. But sporadic violence has been continuing in the country's oil capital.

On Sunday night, unknown gunmen assassinated police Maj. Ali Haider, a commander in the department's serious crimes directorate.

Haider was a member of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council, a Shiite political party that is part of the governing coalition of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, Basra police Col. Salim Zaydi said.

Sporadic clashes also have continued in Baghdad, where Iraqi and U.S. troops have confronted the Mahdi Army militia of anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. Dozens have died in the daily violence in the capital's eastern districts during the past two weeks.

A large section of a market area in eastern Baghdad was set ablaze early Monday when a bomb exploded next to a convoy of U.S. military vehicles driving down a commercial thoroughfare.

The U.S. military said none of the soldiers involved was seriously hurt in the 2 a.m. blast. More than a dozen U.S. and Iraqi firefighting vehicles rushed to the scene to put out the fire, which continued until morning.

Later in the day, another roadside bomb in downtown Baghdad killed five people and wounded nine, police said. The blast missed a police patrol but hit a passing minibus, said a police officer who asked not to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The U.S. military said militants firing rocket-propelled grenades ambushed an American patrol in eastern Baghdad late Sunday night. Fire from armed helicopters and an Abrams tank repulsed the attack, killing six of the gunmen, the statement said.

The government is demanding that al-Sadr disband his Mahdi Army, which has strongholds in Baghdad's sprawling Sadr City neighborhood, the port city of Basra and other locations in southern Iraq.

Elsewhere in Iraq, U.S. soldiers discovered a mass grave near Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles north of Baghdad, the military said Monday.

The grave site, which was unearthed Sunday, contained 20 to 30 badly decomposed bodies that appeared to have been buried nearly eight months, according to the statement. It said the remains would be moved to a nearby cemetery.

It was the latest in a series of mass graves discovered as U.S. and Iraqi troops clear former insurgent strongholds amid improved security, allowing stepped-up patrols.

TV shows freed British journalist Richard Butler in Basra, Iraq.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait's criminal court sentenced a Filipina housemaid to death on Sunday after convicting her of stabbing to death her employer's 20-year-old daughter, a legal source said.

Prosecutors charged that the maid, identifies as Jakatia Mandon Pawa, stabbed the victim several times with a kitchen knife while she was asleep at dawn on May 14 last year in the al-Qurain district, south of Kuwait City.

After killing the daughter, the maid sustained serious injuries after jumping from the second floor of the victim's house and was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital for several days, prosecutors said.

Defense lawyers demanded that the maid be examined by psychiatrists to determine her mental health but the court turned down the request.

The verdict must be confirmed by the court of appeals and cassation and then endorsed by Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah before it can be carried out.

It is the third time that a death sentence has been handed down against a Filipina in recent months.

On April 1, the supreme court upheld a death sentence against May Vecina for killing the seven-year-old son of her Kuwaiti employer and attempting to kill his elder sister and brother.

In December, after a visit by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo the emir agreed to commute to life imprisonment a death sentence handed down against Marilou Ranario, who was convicted of killing her employer.

Death sentences in the Gulf state are carried out by hanging.

About 73,000 Filipinos, some 60,000 of them women employed mostly as housemaids, work in oil-rich Kuwait. Most earn less than $200 a month, advocates say.

CEBU CITY, Philippines - Because of hunger, a log cutter held hostage a mother and her two children aged 17 and 8 for about seven hours in Pinamungajan town, western Cebu on Saturday.

Police Officer 2 Romeo Jaranillo of the Pinamungajan police said Danilo Maguilimutan, 33, drank liquor without eating his dinner.

“Napasmohan siguro kay wa man mokaon unya nakainom. Nagmahay bitaw kuno siya sa iyang gihimo,” Jaranillo said.

Maguilimutan allegedly entered the house of the Buro family about 1:30 a.m. and pointed a knife at Natividad and her son Joseph, 17, and daughter Jecelle, 8. Natividad’s husband was at work.

Natividad said she pleaded with Maguilimutan not to harm them.

The suspect was trembling and claimed he was being hunted by two big men who wanted to kill him.

The mother tried to grab the knife but was overpowered. She suffered a cut in the left arm.

About 8 a.m., Maguilimutan went outside Buro’s house, bringing with him Jecelle and headed towards his house in the next barangay (village).

Natividad and her son immediately sought the assistance of the police.

Senior Police Officer 2 Allan Tundag, who led the responding team, negotiated with Maguilimutan, who eventually released the girl.

The police then arrested Maguilimutan.

Neighbors described Maguilimutan as a good person, industrious and did not have any record of creating trouble.

Natividad said she was willing to forgive the suspect but her relatives wanted to pursue filing charges against Maguilimutan.

Charges to be filed against the suspect include child abuse, grave threats and slight physical injuries.

The child abuse case will be handled by the women's and children's desk of the Pinamungajan police in coordination with the Department of Social Welfare and Development.

According to police, Maguilimutan was quiet inside the detention cell.

“Nagutman lang gyud siguro ni. There were reports that he was into shabu but these were never confirmed,” police said.

Inah Revilla confirmed her pregnancy on Saturday as she apologized to parents Sen. Bong Revilla and Lani Mercado in an interview with GMA-7’s “Startalk” show biz talk show.

“When I found out na positive, talagang in-expect ko na ang lahat. The speculation, yung na-di-disappoint lahat ng tao sa akin. Siyempre kasi first daughter and then everyone was expecting me to do better,” Inah said in a phone interview.

Inah, 18, had shocked her father early April after she informed him of her decision to marry her childhood sweetheart, Vince del Rosario, a 23-year-old student.

The wedding is scheduled on May 28 at the Manila Cathedral.

“Sorry kung na-disappoint kita, birthday na birthday mo ito ang mangyayari,” Inah told Lani, who is also celebrating her 40th birthday on Saturday.

“You’ve been a good daughter. Alam ko if I could only make the choices for you and the decisions for you dahil dinaanan ko rin ang lahat. Umibig din ako. Alam ko yung pakiramdam na yan. Wala eh, di naman kita nababantayan 24/7. Ang puso mo di ko puso. Ang desisyon mo ay di ko desisyon. Nandoon naman ako’t nangangaral sa iyo. Anak, mahal na mahal kita,” Lani said in response.

Lani was also 18 when she married in 1986 the 19-year-old rising action star Bong Revilla, who was emerging from the shadows of his father, movie legend and former senator Ramon Revilla.

“Sorry kung na-disappoint din kita sana di ako dumagdag sa white hair sa ulo mo. Babawi talaga ako ng sobra-sobra at di talaga ako titigil hangga’t di kayo proud sa akin,” Inah said in a message to Bong.

She vowed to continue her studies after giving birth.

In a separate interview, Bong said, “Basta di kami nagkulang sa aming mga anak. We give them the best education, pagmamahal. Alam mo ang magulang, lahat naman, wala namang magulang na naghangad ng hindi maganda sa anak. Pero lahat yon may hangganan. At the end, it’s still the children who will choose their path na tatahakin nila.”

PITTSBURGH  â€"  A 14-year-old girl acknowledged killing her father with a 12-gauge shotgun blast to the face to end years of sexual abuse and could be on juvenile probation until she turns 21, her attorney said Thursday.

Defense attorney Patrick Nightingale said the girl accepted an offer from the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office to be adjudicated delinquent, the juvenile court equivalent of a guilty plea. She was placed on probation on a charge of involuntary manslaughter, the least serious grade of homicide in Pennsylvania, the attorney said.

"I think the DA's office has been consistently very enlightened in its approach because they know my client suffered significant trauma at the hands of her father," Nightingale said. "And I'm very happy on behalf of my client that we won't have to live through that trauma again in a trial setting."

The girl was 13 when she shot Matthew Booth Sr., 34, on July 30 in the squalid home they shared in Elizabeth Township, a rural suburb about 20 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Nightingale and the girl told authorities Booth had abused her since she was about 7.

The girl at first told police two masked men shot her father while ransacking their house, but soon after confessed to shooting him.

Allegheny County prosecutors initially charged her as an adult with criminal homicide, but agreed to move the case to juvenile court in August after District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. toured the home and described the living conditions as "incredible."

An Allegheny County Health Department report showed the home had major health code violations, including no furnace or bathroom sink, holes in walls, a leaky ceiling, and flea infestation from neglected pets, including dogs, cats and rabbits. Much of the furniture was broken and police said the home smelled of animal waste.

Zappala spokesman Mike Manko said the office cannot comment on the resolution of the case because of the girl's age and nature of the proceeding.

The girl was last known to be living in a residential treatment facility, though her once-estranged mother had been trying to get custody of her. Nightingale said he cannot say where the girl is living, but that "reunification (with her mother) is one of the goals of court supervision."

The girl will be supervised by the county's juvenile probation department, which can have jurisdiction over her until she's 21.

Prosecutors have also offered to expunge the girl's juvenile court record if she does well on supervision, Nightingale said.

Nightingale said the relatively lenient resolution was appropriate given the "totality of the circumstances."

"Yes, it's a very serious offense, but the District Attorney's Office acknowledges this little girl has suffered tremendously," Nightingale said.

5 weirdo things about me:) hard to collect  really but i just try:

1.) Sing off key if im broken hearted. Scream as much as i can and i don't care if people covered their ears.

2.)If i got some achievements, I'll sing worship music no matter where I am, at the mall, on the street or who's around. I don't care about impressing you... I'm worshiping God.

3.)Whenever I walk behind, or cross paths with people who don’t look like they practice good personal hygiene, I hold my breath. I have some sort of phobia about breathing in the same air that they were just in. I also do this with sick people.

4.) If im over fatigue, i cant go to sleep. Even if I do not sleep at all one night, I will still not get to sleep on the next day! but on the third day, i can sleep 24 hours continuously if only nobody dares to wake me up!

5.)When somebody tells about scary situation, i can feel that i am  not affected, not even scared and think i am so brave but then if i am engage on a real scary situation, makita na ang katag kay manggahi na diay dile na kalihok.

Weird ba ni? mao raman ni akong nahuna hunaan.. ::)

Philippine Laws / Rice price crisis, not food crisis
April 12, 2008, 04:01:46 AM
The Philippines is calling on the international community to start focusing on solutions to what is being described as a "rice price crisis" in countries worldwide.

At a press briefing Friday, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap quoted M. Syeduzzaman, chair of BOC Bangladesh Ltd., Bangladesh Rice Foundation, as saying that "global rice prices will not abate within the next 18 to 24 months."

Yap pointed out that "we're grappling [with] the same situation." He said it was the "common consensus" of International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) board members that "we're looking at firm prices within the next 18 to 24 months."

But he declined to say whether prices would firm up to current levels or would further increase within the period. He said it would be speculative on his part to give "price forecasts."

"We don't have a food crisis but, rather, a rice price crisis," Yap said. "All of us are looking for innovative solutions in our countries--how to address not only the issue of supply but also the issue of prices, how to [ensure] that poor families can eat."

Yap quoted IRRI director general Robert Zeigler as saying that "in no way should farmers be blamed for the current rice situation."

"What we want to do is encourage Filipino farmers to produce more, and you don't do that by imposing an artificial pricing mechanism to control their profit. You have to give them a signal that it pays to produce food," Zeigler said.

5 critical reasons

Yap ticked off five critical reasons behind the current rice situation:

- A supply largely affected by an increased demand resulting from rising population.

- Climate change.

- Booming demand for biofuels.

- Continuous conversion of agricultural lands to non-agriculture use.

- Neglect of irrigation facilities.

"But there are solutions, and we can move forward from where we are today," he said.

Yap said the Philippines, through the IRRI, had called international donors to a meeting to hammer out solutions addressing production and factors affecting production.

6 key issues

He said the meeting should include developed and developing countries and focus on increased collaboration to deal with the problems facing rice production and the need for increased food aid in the interim.

Prof. Elizabeth Woods, the newly appointed chair of the IRRI board of trustees, said the problems related to rice production and supply in Asia over the past year were "cause for serious concern, but not for panic."

"IRRI and its partners solved similar rice production problems in Asia in the 1960s and '70s, and we can do it again. What we need is the committed support of donors and policymakers, as well as better awareness among the media and general public of the problems we face," Woods said.

Six key issues are seen as vital to increasing production in Asia, which is needed to ease the sharp rise in rice prices across the region, "causing uncertainty and concern."

These are: an agronomic revolution in Asian rice production to reduce existing yield gaps; acceleration in the delivery of new postharvest technologies, in the introduction of higher-yielding rice varieties, and in research on rice varieties; strengthening and upgrading of rice breeding and research pipelines; and developing a new generation of rice scientists.

Meanwhile, Yap announced that the Philippines had procured some 70,000 metric tons of rice under the GSM 100 credit export guarantee program through a tender conducted in the United States on April 8.

No need for panic-buying

"We will continue to bid until we get the desired volume. We dropped the bids for the remaining 30,000 MT because they were too expensive, at some $1,000 a metric ton," he said.

In Manila, Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma said there was a sufficient rice supply and the public did not have to resort to panic-buying.

Ledesma, who chairs the National Rural Congress Committee, told the Philippine Daily Inquirer that the appeal against panic-buying rice had the same moral basis as the earlier call of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines for rice traders not to hoard their goods.

Like Yap, Ledesma said what was happening was more a "rice price crisis" than a "rice crisis," where a number of factors--including fuel price increases, climate change, natural disasters, and the dry season--contributed to the sudden exorbitant increase in the costs of the primary staple.

Should the panic-buying continue, the CBCP's permanent council is to convene in May to issue a statement making a similar call, he said.

Ledesma called on consumers to buy enough rice for their family and on households to "follow their normal budgeting."

Partnership with DA

"This is also the reason the Bigasan ng Parokya has identified recipients of NFA (National Food Authority) rice and has limited the sale of the rice to three kilograms per buyer," he said.

In a press conference Friday at the CBCP head office in Intramuros, Manila, Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo said the NFA rice distribution arrangement with the Department of Agriculture (DA) was only for the duration of the "crisis."

Pabillo, who chairs the CBCP's National Secretariat for Social Action (Nassa), said the partnership with the DA had been going on for two to three years. However, he said, the supply of NFA rice given to the Nassa network was limited, and not all of the targeted beneficiaries, the poorest of the poor in the communities, had been able to avail themselves of the staple.

Not permanent

He said the DA's recent tapping of the Nassa network was intended to strengthen the continuing Church project.

"This [arrangement with the DA) should not be permanent," Pabillo said, pointing out that the Church had no capability in terms of human resources and expertise to become the permanent distributor of NFA rice.

He stressed that the agreement with the DA only tapped the Nassa to ensure that NFA rice was distributed to some 300 to 500 poorest of the poor in different communities, starting in Metro Manila.

Pabillo also said the dioceses would come up with a list of recipients who had previously been surveyed and certified to be among the poorest in the communities.

He said Caritas Manila would be implementing the project.
