SAO PAULO â€" Two years back, Dimas Aliprandi and Elton Plaster didn't know of each other's existence. Then they learned they had been accidentally switched at birth more than 20 years ago.

The discovery didn't bring bitterness or recrimination. Rather, it led to the creation of a bigger family.

Today, the two 25-year-olds are living and working together with both sets of parents growing vegetables and coffee on a small farm in southeastern Brazil.

The chain of events started with Aliprandi, who was always intrigued that he did not resemble the four sisters he grew up with.

"There was something different," he told The Associated Press by phone. "I had blonde hair and blue eyes and my sisters had dark hair and eyes.

"I had the typical features of a descendent of German immigrants, while my sisters and parents were of Italian stock. Something did not add up"

Aliprandi said he was 14 when his suspicions intensified after watching a TV news report on babies getting switched at birth because of mistakes at hospitals.

"I told my father of my doubts and that I wanted to do a DNA test. But it was too expensive" for the family, he said.

A decade later, Aliprandi did it on his own.

"In December 2008, when I was 24, I decided I needed an answer to my doubts and paid 300 reals ($166) for a DNA test that confirmed my suspicions that I was not the birth son of the man and woman who had raised me," he said.

It was a big shock for his parents, Zilda and Antonio Aliprandi. They at first refused to believe the results, but eventually decided to help him look for his biological parents.

The search began at the Madre Regina Protmann Hospital, where he was born.

"I showed the hospital the results of the DNA test and told them that they proved that I had been switched at birth," Aliprandi said.

But hospital officials were skeptical, he said, and asked him to have another DNA test, which he did three months later.

Repeated calls to the hospital for comment went unanswered.

The DNA results were the same as the first, Aliprandi had been given to the wrong mother as an infant.

He said the hospital then searched its records and found Elton Plaster was born there on the same day.

The records led Aliprandi to the 35-acre (14-hectare) farm where Plaster lived with his parents, Nilza and Adelson, in the town of Santa Maria de Jetiba, about 30 miles (45 kilometers) from the Aliprandi home in Joao Neiva.

The Plasters agreed to do DNA tests.

"They discovered that Elton was the biological son of the man and woman that I had been calling Mom and Dad for 24 years," Aliprandi said. "Meanwhile, Elton discovered that the couple he had always regarded as his biological parents were mine."

The discovery did not cause any upset, he said.

"Instead it sparked a desire to join our families," Aliprandi said. "Elton and I wanted to remain with those who raised us and with our birth parents. We wanted to expand our families."

So about a year ago, Aliprandi and the parents who raised him accepted an offer from the Plasters to move to their farm, where they built a home.

"This is the way it should be," Adelson Plaster recently told Globo TV. "We are all together and I now have two sons living and working here."

Aliprandi and Plaster both feel blessed by their new circumstances.

"It's not everyone who can say he has two fathers and two mothers living together with him," Aliprandi said.

At last week’s Vegas Summer League, several top rookies showed their talent, most notably Kentucky standouts John Wall(notes) and DeMarcus Cousins(notes). But from the deep recesses of the Mavericks’ roster came another notable player: Jeremy Lin, an undrafted combo guard (but likely NBA point guard) from Harvard.

Lin impressed in Vegas with his solid all-around game and surprising athleticism and quickness. Since Summer League closed shop, he’s received offers from several teams, and now it appears that he will have something of a homecoming, as noted earlier on The Baseline. From Marc Stein of ESPN.com:

Sources told ESPN.com on Tuesday that the Warriors, by offering to guarantee more than half of Lin’s potential first-year salary of nearly $500,000, have reached an agreement with the point guard from Harvard. Lin is expected to receive a multiyear deal, sources said. The deal has not been signed.

Lin’s Bay Area roots and consistently strong performance with the Dallas Mavericks’ squad in Las Vegas prompted the Warriors to chase Lin hard and ultimately outbid a handful of teams that have been pursuing him since summer-league play ended Sunday.

Other teams pursuing Lin included the Lakers and Mavs, but as a lifelong Warriors fan, it’s no surprise that Lin chose the team that’s also guaranteeing him money.

This is a phenomenal story. Lin would be the first Asian-American athlete to play in the NBA and the first Harvard product in more than 50 years. In case you forget, Harvard doesn’t hand out scholarships, so Lin entered college with no publicity. He’s a real success story, someone who worked his way to the NBA when few believed he could do it.

Yet his story goes even deeper than that. At Palo Alto High School, Lin led his team to the 2006 state championship and defeated SoCal powerhouse Mater Dei (a team with no fewer than four high-level college prospects) virtually by himself. It was one of the biggest upsets in California basketball history and made Lin a Bay Area legend.

Still, his exploits weren’t enough to get him a scholarship. Lin wanted to go to Stanford and was accepted to the school as part of the normal admissions process, but the coaching staff only offered him the opportunity to walk on. (Two guards awarded scholarships during the same recruiting cycle accomplished very little for the Cardinal.) So he went to Harvard, where he had the chance to play early and often. He proved that he belonged quite quickly.

Lin is sure to be a fan favorite in Oakland, although that term might be a gross understatement. He’s already famous in the Bay Area, and the fact that he’s now the league’s first Asian-American should make him a media star. Monday night, local news treated the story of his pending NBA contract as if he were a little kid meeting the president, and that was before it was reported that he’d play for the Warriors. It’s easy to imagine his jersey becoming the team’s top-seller around the region, if not in areas with large Asian-American populations around the country.

You have probably noticed that this post doesn’t have much information on Lin as a basketball player, but there will be time for that discussion later. Right now, this is an event and celebration, not a mere signing.

A mother and her four children â€" two boys and two girls â€" died in a fire that tore through their apartment in a four-family house on Staten Island before dawn on Thursday morning. Fire officials said they found no smoke detectors in the apartment.

The blaze gutted much of the two-story house at 302 Nicholas Avenue in the Port Richmond neighborhood. Fire marshals were still going through the debris at midmorning, looking for clues as to how the fire had started, and where. But fire officials said the blaze was probably not suspicious.

Neighbors said they were awakened shortly after 4 a.m. by shouts of “There’s a fire, there’s a fire!” They said the windows of the burning apartment were lit up by flames, and the blaze soon spread to the roof.

“You could see the flames shooting up in the air,” said Christine Valentin, who lives next door.

Firefighters were alerted by a 911 call from someone on the street at 4:13 a.m., and the first of 140 firefighters began arriving within four minutes. They hosed down at the top of an inside stairway leading to the burning apartment, and in the moment the flames died down, a lieutenant burst in.

He found the youngest child, a 2-year-old boy, and carried him out. The little boy was taken to Staten Island University Hospital, where he died.

The mother, identified by a city official as Leisa Jones, and the other three children died in the apartment. The two girls were 10 and 7 years old, neighbors said, and the other boy was 14. Neighbors said they were Jamaican and had moved into the apartment about a year ago.

In all, 17 people lived in the building. Everyone but the Joneses escaped.

Shannon Barback, 37, who lives in the other apartment on the second floor, said she and her three children got out because her boyfriend, Nicholas Cotton, 32, heard someone banging on a door downstairs.

“It was two girls from down the block,” Ms. Barback said. Mr. Cotton went to the window, she said, and “the girls were telling him, ‘There’s a fire, get out, get out.’”

He checked the apartment, Ms. Barback said, and found nothing amiss until he opened the bathroom door. Flames were racing through a shaftway. “He grabbed me and he said, ‘Get up, get up,’” she said. “He shook me. We grabbed the kids, sleeping in the living room, and went out.”

She said police officers and firefighters were downstairs, trying to knock down a door leading to the burning apartment.

Commissioner Salvatore Cassano of the Fire Department said at 6 a.m. that said the blaze was being investigated as a suspicious fire, but that is not unusual when there is no apparent cause, when a fire breaks out in the early morning and when there are so many casualties. Fire marshals were called in to investigate, and by midmorning officials were moving away from the idea that the blaze was suspicious.

James Long, a Fire Department spokesman, said the marshals were still working to determine the cause, “but it’s less likely this is a suspicious fire.”

SINGAPORE (AFP) - â€" A devoted Filipina maid inherited six million Singapore dollars (more than four million US) from her late employer after more than 20 years of service, a newspaper report said Wednesday.

"I am the luckiest maid in Singapore, with or without the money," the 47-year-old single woman -- identified only by the pseudonym "Christine" -- told the Straits Times in an interview.

The maid refused to be named in public for fear of possible threats to her life in the impoverished Philippines, where wealthy people have been kidnapped for ransom and some killed by their abductors.

The windfall, including cash and a luxury apartment near the Orchard Road shopping belt, came from the estate of her employer Quek Kai Miew, a medical doctor and philanthropist who died last year at 66.

The maid had also taken care of the doctor's late mother, and was told that she would be a beneficiary of her employer's will when it was drawn up in 2008.

"There were no secrets between us. I was not surprised at all when she told me how much I was going to get," the maid recalled.

"Christine" was devastated when Quek died a year ago, as the two were inseparable, and temporarily moved in with the doctor's nephew for solace.

"It was heartbreaking for me as I saw more years with Doctor Quek than with my own mother. I would break down every time I thought about her. I could not be by myself," she said.

"I was always beside her. Wherever she went, I was with her."

The maid, who is now applying for permanent residency in Singapore, said her newfound wealth had not changed her lifestyle.

"I do not really think much about the money I got. I just live my life as I did before, and not as a rich person," the maid, dressed simply in a blouse and slacks with short-cropped hair, was quoted as saying.

"I am still who I was before. I cannot behave differently because I have money now. Even my Filipino maid friends here still treat me the same."

Nearly 200,000 foreign maids, mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia, work in affluent Singapore, which has a population of five million.

Alberto Contador team Astana is my choice, he is now ahead by 31´ to Andy Schleck of team Saxo Bank as of stage 15 yesterday raced.

Nope, contador only leads 8 seconds to andy schleck. if not for that busted sprocket and plate and contador forgetting the rule, schleck he could have retained his 31 second lead going to stage 16. race rules states that a rider should wait his rival if it will encounter technical and mechanical problems but contador breezes through saying that he didn't know schleck had problems with his bike.

FORMER internal revenue officer Nieto Racho was on his way out of a courtroom after attending trial in Cebu City yesterday morning, when Assistant Ombudsman Virginia Palanca-Santiago spotted him.

She immediately ordered his arrest.

Judge Macaundas Had-jirasul of the Regional Trial Court Branch 8, who issued a bench warrant of arrest against Racho last year, right away scheduled his arraignment at 2:30 p.m. yesterday.

Assisted by his lawyer, Charisse Cabatingan, Racho pleaded not guilty to charges of violating Article 171 of the Revised Penal Code, or falsification of a public document.

The Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas had charged Racho over an unexplained P5.8 million in three Cebu-based banks. He did not declare the amount in his statements of assets and liabilities (SAL).

In May 2003, former deputy ombudsman for the Visayas Primo Miro ordered Racho’s dismissal from government service. He was then chief of the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s Special Investigation Division.

The anti-graft office found him administratively liable for falsification and dishonesty.

Atty. Cabatingan told reporters yesterday her client did not receive the subpoena, which is why Racho failed to attend his arraignment last Feb. 16, 2009.

Although the accused posted a surety bond of P24,000, Judge Hadjirasul already ruled last year the bond should be forfeited because Racho skipped his arraignment.

On March 7, 2009, Hadjirasul issued the arrest warrant.

Cabatingan confirmed yesterday that Racho was going to post another bond of P24,000 yesterday. She declined to comment further, while Racho also declined requests for an interview.

Judge Hadjirasul scheduled the pre-trial conference of the case in September this year.

Based on case records at the anti-graft office, the investigation against the tax official began after a news organization submitted certifications of Racho’s 1999 deposits in three banks, amounting to P2.93 million, P1.63 million and P1.22 million.

But an examination of Racho’s SALs from 1995 to 2000 showed he only declared P1 million as his cash in the bank.

In his counter-affidavit, Racho did not deny the existence of the accounts, but questioned the anti-graft office’s authority to conduct the investigation.

Racho said he has been in government service for 36 years with an unblemished record.

He entered the government service in 1968, joining the Cooperatives Administration Office, and stayed there for five years. He then joined the Commission on Audit before he transferred to the BIR.

A ROOKIE policeman died after taking a bullet in the neck in an accident inside a boarding house on Sanciangko St., Barangay Pahina Central, Cebu City past 10 p.m. Monday.

PO1 Ronnie Bajado Barrita, 27, who is on the field training program (FTP) at the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) and assigned to Task Force Colon, died at past 7 last night at the Cebu City Medical Center.

“PO1 Barrita died and was no longer moved to another hospital,” lawyer and Sun.Star columnist Eddie Barrita, the victim’s uncle, said in a text message sent to Sun.Star Cebu at past 7 last night.

Earlier, Atty. Barrita said they were planning to transfer his nephew to Chong Hua Hospital.

The slug from the Norinco .45 pistol owned by PO1 Ronie Berngel Barangian, which tore Barrita’s neck, exited through his nape.

Barangian, 25, who is also an FTP assigned with the Centralized Beat Patrol under the operations section of the city police force and a batch mate of Barrita, surrendered to the police.

He is now detained at the CCPO stockade while charges are being prepared against him by the Homicide Section.

CCPO Director Patrocinio Comendador Jr. said Barangian may face a complaint of homicide through reckless imprudence or homicide.

Barrita, Barangian and another neophyte policeman, identified as PO1 Mari June B. Bohol, 26, were reportedly drinking a few bottles of beer when the shooting happened.

Another policeman, PO1 Adam L. Perpetua, 24, also an FTP policeman, was sleeping on a bench when the accident happened.

Barangian was reportedly playing with the loaded pistol in front of Barrita when it went off, hitting Barrita in the neck.

He was taken by his fellow policemen to the city hospital.

Responding personnel from the Scene of the Crime Operations Unit (CSIU) recovered one empty shell and one deformed slug.

The .45 pistol with 10 bullets was confiscated from Barangian’s possession.

Barangian was submitted to a paraffin test yesterday.

All the police officers in the incident declined interviews.

Comendador, in an interview with reporters, said according to the information that reached him, Barrita and Bohol went to the boarding house, where Barangian is staying, to have dinner.

Bohol and Barrita were on duty at the downtown area as members of Task Force Colon.

Pending the result of the investigation, Comenda-dor said Bohol is restricted inside the CCPO headquarters.

Comendador said the Homicide Section will file the criminal complaint against Barangian.

As to the administrative aspect, Comendador said, it will be handled by the Police Regional Office (PRO) 7, which has the jurisdiction over FTP police officers.

Comendador said the result of the investigation and recommendations will be forwarded to PRO 7 for action.

If it is proven the FTP policemen violated some rules in the use of firearms, they could be kicked out of the service.

PRO 7 Director Lani-o Nerez, during yesterday’s 888 News Forum, said a field trainee’s appointment is temporary and removing them from the service does not require pre-charge evaluations, unlike regular police officers.

Nerez said police officers should not be seen drinking while wearing their police uniforms. They also should not play with their firearms, especially when they are drinking.

Nerez said CCPO will investigate the case thoroughly and determine if the field trainees committed an irregularity or violated any police policy.

“If the investigation’s results are not favorable to them, we can recommend their removal,” Nerez said

Agnus Dei (Lamb of God)

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us.
Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us.
Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us peace.

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace.

Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.
Amen.

Confiteor (General Confession)
I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done, and in what I have failed to do; and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo (Glory to God in the highest)
Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, Almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.

For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Glory Be to the Father
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen.

Kyrie eléison (Lord, have mercy)
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy.

Litania Sanctorum (Litany of the Saints)

Nicene Creed )(rofession of faith)
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. nd in one Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, the only-begotten, born of the Father before all ages. Light of light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father, through whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation, came down from heaven, and was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and Mary the Virgin, and became man. He was also crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And He rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures. And He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory, to judge the living and the dead, and of His kingdom there will be no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets. In one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I profess one baptism for the remission of sins. I expect the resurrection of the dead; and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Pater Noster (Lord's Prayer, also known as the Our Father)
Our Father in heaven, holy be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

[For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever.]

Amen.

Sanctus (Holy)
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Bible Study / Re: Tantum Ergo Sacramentum
July 07, 2010, 03:47:43 AM
Tantum ergo are the opening words of the last two verses of Pange Lingua, a Mediaeval Latin hymn written by St Thomas Aquinas. These last two verses are sung during veneration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament in the Roman Catholic Church and other churches that practice this devotion. It is usually sung, though solemn recitation is sometimes done, and permitted.

Some part of the consecration:
Priest: Panem de caelis praestitisti eis. (All: Alleluja)
Response: Omne delectamentum in se habentem.(All: Alleluja)

Oremus: Deus, qui nobis sub sacramento mirabili, passionis tuae memoriam reliquisti: tribue, quaesumus, ita nos corporis et sanguinis tui sacra mysteria venerari, ut redemptionis tuae fructum in nobis iugiter sentiamus. Qui vivis et regnas in saecula saeculorum.

R. Amen.

Question and Answer / Re: MAC or Windows?
July 02, 2010, 05:13:18 AM
i would go for MAC because of lesser bugs compared to windows. however MAC is too expensive compared to PC's and it's very obvious that windows is universally known and cheaper. you can even buy a clone PC unlike MAC where it's very rare to someone using a clone MAC. but I enjoy using both as well as linux.

Isner and Mahut deadlocked at 59-59 in historic Wimbledon tilt

By Chris Chase

Epic doesn't even begin to cover it.

After 10 hours, 163 games and almost 1,000 points, American John Isner and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut were locked at 59-59 in the fifth set of their historic first-round match at Wimbledon when play was suspended for the second straight day due to darkness.

You read the score correctly: 59-59. When the Wimbledon final had a 16-14 final set last year, that seemed like a marathon. In comparison, this match was like running to the moon.

The pair started play on Tuesday, splitting four sets before play was halted due to a lack of light. They resumed Wednesday afternoon and figured to be on the court for around an hour to finish their fifth set. Improbably and amazingly, the men were still on Court 18 as the sun set at the All England Club seven hours later. Isner could barely move. Mahut looked punch-drunk. Yet they soldiered on, playing in front of a stunned crowd and a worldwide audience which grew by the minute, as word of the match spread through the sports world. On a day where the World Cup figured to be the top story in sports, two unheralded players on a distant court at Wimbleon stole the show.

The tennis itself wasn't especially riveting for most of the play on Wednesday as big serves, the speedy grass court and fatigue made for quick rallies and short service games. There were very few break chances â€" Mahut only had one break point prior to the 147th game and Isner just had four break points of his own â€" but the drama and mind-boggling length of the set more than made up for it.

Consider: The longest previous set at Wimbledon lasted 46 games. Isner-Mahut didn't just shatter the record, they obliterated it.

Among the other remarkable statistics from the match:

â€" It's the longest match in tennis history: 10 hours. The previous record was 6 hours, 33 minutes.

â€" Longest set in tennis history: 118 games.

â€" Most games in tennis history: 163 (previous record was 112).

â€" Both players broke the ATP record for most aces in a match. Isner had 98, Mahut hit 95. The previous record was 78. Combined, the two had 193 aces, more than double the old record of 96.

â€" Mahut had just three break points during the entire match.

â€" The first four sets took 2 hours, 54 minutes. The fifth set is at 7 hours, 6 minutes and counting.

â€" Mahut won 448 points to Isner's 428. Isner had more winners: 333 to 318.

â€" The final set is longer than the previous longest match in tennis history. That was 6 hours, 33 minutes.

â€" Isner had four match points, one at 11-10, two others at 33-32 and another at 59-58. The first and last match points came nearly six hours apart.

â€" At 50-50, Mahut had two break points and Isner promptly served a 134 mph ace.

â€" With Mahut serving at 52-53, the pair exchanged a 16-shot rally which ended with a Mahut forehand winner. It was the longest rally of the match. On the next point, Mahut dove for a backhand at the baseline following another long rally.

â€" The players took their first bathroom break at 58-58. While walking in the tunnel, they exchanged pleasantries, the first time they had spoken all evening.

â€" Mahut only qualified for Wimbledon after winning a qualifying match in a 24-22 final set.

â€" The match is almost two hours longer than the longest Major League Baseball game in history (an 8:06 game between the White Sox and Brewers in 1984).

â€" The scoreboard stopped working at 47-47.

We'll never see the likes of this again.

The match is scheduled to be completed on Thursday afternoon. But Wimbledon organizers may want to keep a court open for Friday, just in case.
