Barely four days after the break-in of the house of Guindulman Mayor Fe Anaña Piezas, two of the three suspects were captured by pursuing policemen solving the five-day old robbery in record time. Carted away from the evening robbery was P600,000, a sizable amount among robbery cases pulled off in recent memory in the province of Bohol. The two suspects were nabbed the other day while a third suspect remains the object of a massive police manhunt. Guindulman police chief PInsp Romeo Jamero said they are now in custody Ralph Timbal and Dizon Timbal, all of legal age, from nearby barangay Bato, who were positively identified by a woman helper to be the robbers who entered the mayor’s residence in barangay Guinacot at about 7 Monday evening. Mayor Piezas and her husband, retired municipal health officer Ernesto Piezas were not in the house during the incident.

The arrest of the two suspects came after the Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB), the Special Operations Group (SOG) and elements of the Guindulman Police Station jointly conducted the pursuit operation banking on information provided to them by house helper Cherry Mae Amora. The helper, during the initial investigation said she did not recognize the identities of the suspects since they wore bonnets. All witnesses in the house also said they could not look closely at the suspects out of fear since the robbers were armed. Upon further investigation, it was noted that Amora appear to know the suspects based on some alleged text messages on her cellphone. Scene of the crime operatives also noted that the robbers did not ransack the whole house but directly went into the masters’ bedroom and took the cash tucked underneath the bed mattress. Initial investigation findings led to the possibility that it was an inside job.

Taken were P600,000 cash and the heist was over in less than ten minutes. The helper, suspected as accessory to the crime, is now eyed as principal witness in the complaint readied for filing against the two arrested suspects and the still at large unidentified third companion. This was not the first time helpers of the mayor were tagged as suspects in alleged crimes involving money matters. Earlier, the mayor also filed a criminal complaint against another woman helper who allegedly defrauded her close to P2M money while designated as cashier of her piggery business. The case is still under litigation at the Regional Trial Court, Branch 50, in Loay.

How very sad ! The Mayor should have practiced prudence and caution. Put your money in a bank or at least buy a Safe.

Truly, this is an expensive lesson to learn.

Ah yes, it was truly an abominable time during the Jim Crow Era. The racist sentiment in the country was quite high and paramount during that time. The Civil Rights movement and the integration of whites, blacks and other minorities in the educational system and in private and public enterprises did help to reduce the racist sentiment and to promote a concept of multicultural awareness that makes the country more "worldly" now. Thank goodness for the Civil Rights movement and for the repelling of apartheid-esque policies of 19th and early 20th centuries....

Talk of the Town / Re: Racism Against Filipinos
May 15, 2012, 10:45:45 AM
Priscilla,

It is good to dream big, to think about the potential our people have, the possibilities the country and the people have. I have no doubt that the country is progressing in the right direction. The Philippines, a nation that just received independence some 65 years ago, has achieved and overcome a plethora of political, military and economic situations in its recent history. I hope and pray that the Philippines and the Filipino people continue towards its march of Progress.

I trust in the character and the potential of the Filipino, which I am very proud to be part of. :)

Mabuhay ang Pilipino ! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas !

Sincerely,

This is one of the most moving parables of Jesus...

This is also one of my favorite parables to read, Bai Hubag. It reminds me , when I read this, of how much our Heavenly Father God loves us dearly and totally. Living in a cruel, hard world, we tend to forget that there is Someone who does Love us totally, perfectly, and with an Everlasting Love. A love that we can always count on...when all else fails. A love that, when we allow it to overwhelm us and consume us, can carry us through any situation life throws at us.

I always smile and feel empowered whenever I read this parable. :)

Sometimes, we make it harder than it is
We'll take a perfect night
And fill it up with words we don't mean
Dark sides best unseen
And we wonder why we're feeling this way

Sometimes, I wonder if we really feel the same
Why we can be unkind
Questioning the strongest of hearts
That's when we must start
Believing in the one thing
That has gotten us this far

(Chorus 1:)
That's what love is for
To help us through it
That's what love is for
Nothing else can do it
Melt our defenses
Bring us back to our senses
Give us strength to try once more
Baby, that's what love is for

Sometimes, I see you, and you don't know I am there
And I'm washed away
By emotions I hold deep down inside
Getting stronger with time
It's living through the fire
And holding on we find

(Repeat chorus 1)

Believing in the one thing
That has gotten us this far

(Chorus 2:)
That's what love is for
To help us through it
That's what love is for
Nothing else can do it
Round off the edges
Talk us down from the ledges
Give us strength to try once more
Baby, that's what love is for

That's what love is for
That's what love is for
Melt our defenses
Bring us back to our senses
Give us strength to try once more
Baby, that's what love is for

That's what love is for
(That's what love is for)
That's what love is for

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is goodâ€"except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24 Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25 Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

26 Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

28 Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!”

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God  will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’

25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’

27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’

29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’

30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’

31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Inspiration & Hope / The Parable of the Lost Son
May 14, 2012, 12:28:31 PM
1 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.

13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.

17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ 20 So he got up and went to his father.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.

21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’

22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.

25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

I cried when i watched this video....apparently, Christian never forgot his owners. After he was released in the wild , the former owners decided to return a year and a half later. They were told by the game reserve personnel that the lion named "Christian" would not remember them.

The two went on ahead, anyways, and waited for Christian on the same spot that last saw him. He came to them...and immediatley recognized them. Giving them both his quintessential hump/hug! To the overwhelming joy of his former owners!

Christian eventually even introduced his own family to his former owners...years later....

Truly, absolutely, beautiful....:)

Rendall details a final, largely unfilmed reunion that occurred (reported in some newspaper articles to have been in 1974, and by George Adamson to have been in 1973). By this time Christian was successfully defending his own pride, had cubs of his own and was about twice the size he was in the earlier reunion video. Adamson advised Rendall that it would most likely be a wasted trip as he had not seen Christian's pride for nine months. However, when he reached Kora, Christian and his pride had returned to Adamson's compound the day before their arrival.

Rendall describes the visit he and George Adamson made:

We called him and he stood up and started to walk towards us very slowly. Then, as if he had become convinced it was us, he ran towards us, threw himself on to us, knocked us over, knocked George over and hugged us, like he used to, with his paws on our shoulders.

The second reunion lasted until the next morning. According to Rendall that was the last anyone saw Christian.

George Adamson counted the days from the late spring 1973 final reunion. He notes in his book My Pride And Joy that after 97 days, he stopped counting.

Reunions

1971

When Rendall and Bourke were informed by Adamson of Christian's successful reintroduction to the wild (reported in some newspaper articles to be in 1971, and by George Adamson to be 1972 they traveled to Kenya to visit Christian and were filmed in the documentary Christian, The Lion at World's End (released in the U.S. as Christian the Lion).[3] According to the documentary, Adamson advised Rendall and Bourke that Christian might not remember them. The film shows the lion at first cautiously approach and then quickly leap playfully onto the two men, standing on his hind legs and wrapping his front legs around their shoulders, nuzzling their faces. The documentary also shows the female lions, Mona and Lisa, and a foster cub named Supercub welcoming the two men

Christian was a lion originally purchased by Australians John Rendall and Anthony "Ace" Bourke from Harrods department store of London, England in 1969 and ultimately reintroduced to the African wild by conservationist George Adamson. One year after George Adamson released Christian to the wild, his former owners decided to go looking for him to see whether Christian would remember them. He did, and with him were two lionesses who accepted the men as well.

Christian was originally acquired by Harrods from the now-defunct zoo park in Ilfracombe. Rendall would later recall that the department store was eager to sell the cub, which had escaped from his cage one night and destroyed the merchandise in the carpet department. Rendall and Bourke purchased Christian for 250 guineas.

Rendall and Bourke, along with their friends Jennifer Mary Taylor and Unity Jones, cared for the lion where they lived in London until he was a year old. As he got larger, the men moved Christian to their furniture store â€" coincidentally named Sophistocat â€" where living quarters in the basement were set aside for him. Rendall and Bourke obtained permission from a local vicar to exercise Christian at a church graveyard, and the men also took the lion on day trips to the seaside.

Christian's growing size and the increasing cost of his care led Rendall and Bourke to understand they could not keep him in London. When Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, stars of the film Born Free, visited Rendall and Bourke's furniture store and met Christian, they suggested that Bourke and Rendall ask the assistance of George Adamson. Adamson, a Kenyan conservationist, who together with his wife Joy raised and released Elsa the Lioness, agreed to reintegrate Christian into the wild at his compound in the Kora National Reserve. Virginia McKenna writes about the experience in her memoir The Life in My Years, published March 2009

Yes, there are serious people in serious publications seriously advocating war.

You might have missed it during all the fuss about Chen Guangcheng, but, for a month now, China has been embroiled in an increasingly bellicose dispute with the Philippines.

So what is going on? Well, strange as it may seem, the two stories may be connected.

At the heart of the issue is what is called Scarborough Shoal by the Philippines and Huangyan Island by China, a little more than 100 miles (160km) from the Philippines and 500 miles from China.

The names are a bit misleading because this is a series of rocks, reefs and small islands stretching across an area of about 150sq km (58 sq miles) of the South China Sea, claimed by both the Philippines and China.

You can see what one "island" looks like here, a screenshot taken from a Chinese TV report yesterday - that is the reporter posing on the rock, and then planting the Chinese flag on it, which gives an insight into the way the issue is being played by China's media.

For a month now, there has been a standoff between Chinese and Philippine fishing and coastguard vessels near the outcrops.

The Global Times, a highly nationalistic English language paper produced by the Communist Party's People's Daily Group, has a useful map that shows how far China's territorial claims extend, on this special page it is now devoting to this 'conflict'.

On Tuesday, China's Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying summoned a Philippine diplomat for the third time in this standoff, and delivered a warning, that China has "made all preparations to respond to any escalation of the situation by the Philippine side".

On Wednesday, the Global Times helpfully explained in its editorial that Ms Fu's "remarks are seen as China sending a sign that it will not rule out the use of force".

The paper explained: "The Philippines needs to be taught a lesson for its aggressive nationalism. For China, the standoff over Huangyan Island is a matter of sovereignty. And now Manila needs to be defeated in this area... If the standoff escalates into a military clash, the international community should not be completely surprised".

For China, sovereignty is one of the key issues it says it will not compromise on, so it is sending strong signals but also boxing itself in.

Unlike the Chen Guangcheng case, which has been heavily censored, China's internet is full of coverage of this story (for a taste, here is the special page created by sohu.com) which says China's sovereignty has been challenged and the Philippines is creating problems.

So it is fair to believe all this coverage is officially approved.

The odd thing here is that the Philippine navy consists of just one proper ship and that is an ancient US Coast Guard cutter which is hardly a match for China's navy, as this online commentary by "The Comparativist" makes clear.

The Comparativist writes: "I think this is happening because the Philippines is so weak. The Chinese government can beat the war drums all they want, and as loud as they want, and no war is going to happen. It's akin to bullying someone in a wheelchair that you know can't punch back."

That's one possibility. China, and its foreign ministry in particular, have been at the receiving end of intense criticism recently, whether over the Chen Guangcheng case or the Bo Xilai scandal.

So building up a row with the Philippines may be a way of trying to look tough, distract public attention, and hype a bit of nationalist fervour.

But there are dangers here too. The president of the Philippines has tweeted this statement this week, making clear that the Philippines believes America will help protect it from any Chinese aggression. So a dispute could lead to a very tense situation.

China's policy in the South China Sea is not a simple matter, directed clearly from the top as the International Crisis Group has detailed, but affected by many different players.

And now we have more escalation. China is now piling commercial pressure on top of the diplomatic and military pressure, halting tourism to the Philippines, tightening inspections of fruit imports and warning its citizens to be careful of their safety during demonstrations planned for Manila on Friday.

It's a dangerous dynamic that could escalate much further yet. We will keep watching.

Now, that the sleeping giant is wide awake and taking the whole globe by storm (financially) hmmmm, duna ba kahay intresado nga mamahimo Province of China ang Pilipinas. I know the immediate reaction is a "bloody reaction" pero tagae ninyo ug panahon nga mahinuklogan ning ideyaha, di ba naa man joy mogimaw as interested. Mark my work. It has nothing to do with patriotism or unpatriotism.  ;D

The Philippines is placed in a rather sensitive position because the country is in close proximity with a rising power. The Chinese know that the Philippines is a staunch ally of Washington and they know that if they engage the Philippines, they will be fighting the United States by proxy.

as of this point, if china plays hardball brinkmanship, there's no reason why the philippines shouldn't do the same.

brink·man·ship n.
The practice, especially in international politics, of seeking advantage by creating the impression that one is willing and able to push a highly dangerous situation to the limit rather than concede.

even the smallest boy at the playground needs to stand up against a bigger bully, whatever it takes.

Yes, you are right. The Armed Forces of the Republic of the Philippines must not cower down to the PLAN, PLA. The Chinese will try to use their overwhelming might and force projection capability to try to intimidate the Philippines and the Filipino people. We must not cower, as we should not let illegal military force jeopardize the territorial integrity of the Republic.

With or without American military support, the Philippines must stand up for itself. So that the entire world will see that we are not a nation of cowards, nor will we allow our territory and our waters be taken from us by thieves.

wow!  the chinese government really know how display muscle and pander to their constituents.  a good way to distract the public from their ongoing power play and scandal.  as for the lady who made the gaffe that china owns the philippines, ugh, could one say that that's what she gets for being more conscious of her form rather than substance?  :o

They are very wise in their strategy. China's political quagmire continues to be a strain on the political party and the confidence of the people. China's Communist Party could nefariously take advantage of the situation , by initiating a war with the Philippines-US, the state media of China could use this as pretext to rally the people under the guise of their nation being attacked. The Chinese people would blindly rally to fight the 'common foe'.

The Chinese communist party are not stupid, it seems. They are as desperate to reign in control as ever.

It seems that the Chinese Government has placed the People's Liberation Army Navy's South Sea Fleet on full military alert...
#13869
The Philippine Navy needs to be placed in full alert, should such an situation arise. One can never really predict China's military operations; the Indians were unprepared for them in 1962, and as a result, lost to the Chinese in the 1962 Sino-Indian War. When the Indians didnt expect the Chinese to attack; the latter attacked in full force.

Let us hope that the Philippine Navy and servicemen do not experience the same fate as what happened to the Vietnamese in 1988. The military should be ready for anything.

#13870
It would be shear political and military suicide for the Chinese side to initiate armed conflict with the Philippines. The Chinese are the ones biding time and trying to instigate the Philippine side to fire the first shot , as it would give the Chinese side the right to commit her naval, air, and land forces to the region. Surely, the Chinese should know better than to expect the Philippines to shoot first, as the country has always been a defensive nation. If China attacks first, it will be seen by the international community as the aggressor. Additionally, I doubt the Chinese Navy can survive if the United States Navy's 7th and 3rd Fleet comes steaming in full force. The PLAN would be sent to the bottom of the sea...

You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too lofty for me to attain.

For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;

all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them,
they would outnumber the grains of sand
when I awake, I am still with you.

no foundation in the world is funded from one's own pocket.  if you tell me otherwise, then you don't know foundations.  some foundations are even organized as tax shelters by corporations.  that's a fact.

That is so true, Ms. Isles, kai og mo donate ka, considered man na "tax deductible".

"When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and repayment come to you. But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."
