Scientists aren't sure whether the ejected material actually assumes the shape of a hand, or whether its interaction with the pulsar's particles is just making it appear that way.

"We don't know if the hand shape is an optical illusion," Hongjun An, of McGill University in Montreal, said in a statement. "With NuSTAR, the hand looks more like a fist, which is giving us some clues."

The red cloud appearing at the fingertips is a separate structure called RCW 89. The pulsar's wind may be heating the cloud to produce the low-energy X-ray glow, astronomers believe.

The X-ray energies seen by NuSTAR range from 7 to 25 kiloelectron volts, or keV, whereas the energies seen by Chandra range from 0.5 to 2 keV.

The Hand of God is an example of pareidolia, the psychological phenomenon of perceiving familiar shapes in random or vague images. Other common forms of pareidolia include seeing animals or faces in clouds, or the man in the moon. Despite its supernatural appearance, the Hand of God was produced by natural astrophysical phenomena.
#13614
The hand was produced when a star exploded and ejected an enormous cloud of material, which NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or NuSTAR, glimpsed in high-energy X-rays, shown in blue in the photo. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory had imaged the green and red parts previously, using lower-energy X-rays.

"NuSTAR's unique viewpoint, in seeing the highest-energy X-rays, is showing us well-studied objects and regions in a whole new light," NuSTAR principal investigator Fiona Harrison, of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said in a statement.

The new image depicts a pulsar wind nebula, produced by the dense remnant of a star that exploded in a supernova. What's left behind is a pulsar, called PSR B1509-58 (B1509 for short), which spins around 7 times per second blowing a wind of particles into material ejected during the star's death throes.

As these particles interact with nearby magnetic fields, they produce an X-ray glow in the shape of a hand. (The pulsar is located near the bright white spot in the image but cannot be seen itself, NASA officials said.)

Religion and astronomy may not overlap often, but a new NASA X-ray image captures a celestial object that resembles the "Hand of God."

At home, the Bangladeshi army is unlikely to repeat its futile effort in 2007 to banish both the atrocious begums, Mrs Zia and Sheikh Hasina, from politics altogether. The army made a mess of its attempt at governing, in 2007-08. Sheikh Hasina also benefits from having sweetened the armed forces with lucrative UN peacekeeping duties and promises of Russian weapons and Chinese submarines that should encourage them to remain in their barracks in the coming months.

Much depends on what sort of leadership the opposition can offerâ€"in particular, whether it can turn its popular refusal to take part in a flawed election into a wider protest calling for new and fair polls. Once, when Mrs Zia was asked whether she believed Sheikh Hasina would step down after an election, she called her a “despot” who thinks she will “never have to relinquish power”. But even if all goes well, that prediction is likely to take months to be proven wrong.
#13617
Foreigners will press for a new vote, but not firmly. Western countries all refused to send observers to the recent polls. On January 6th American, British and other governments lamented the violence and the flawed election in equal measure. Yet none has gone so far as to say that Sheikh Hasina’s victory, and thus her government, is illegitimate. Outsiders could threaten to cut aid or trade benefits (especially valuable duty-free access for clothes to the EU). But they will be wary of undermining laudable anti-poverty efforts.

So Sheikh Hasina probably thinks she can hold on. If she is seen to offer negotiations with Mrs Zia, that may be enough to buy her time. Official proposals for future elections are likely to include all-party caretaker administrations and a revamped election commission. But agreement on these would take months and may never be reached. Meanwhile the government will press the BNP hard to break ties with Jamaat.

Sheikh Hasina enjoys a degree of political cover. The biggest neighbour, India, did send observers to the polls, and praised her for holding them at all. Despite earlier Indian efforts to look even-handed, among Bangladeshis the perception is growing that India heavily favours Sheikh Hasina over her rivals. It is certainly eager to see Jamaat and other Islamists weakened.
#13618
In all, it is an ugly start to what is bound to be another bloody year. In 2013, 500 or so people were killed in political clashes, one of the most violent years since independence. The government, with some cause, blames the BNP and, especially, its Islamist allies. Since the election, pro-Jamaat hoodlums have reportedly attacked minority Hindu families in rural areas.

Yet the League also bears responsibility for the unrest. A flawed war-crimes trial, in which leading opposition figures have been sentenced to hang for what they did in the independence war of 1971, has greatly raised tensions. The trials and executions will go on for months.

It is less clear how long Sheikh Hasina believes she can brazen things out. That, a close adviser concedes, is “the trillion-dollar question”. He expects another year or more before new elections. Several factors favour her as she prepares to be sworn in at the end of the month. Not least, the BNP is in disarray, its leaders either uninspiring or locked up. Its recourse to months of crippling strikes and street protests, in association with Jamaat, was desperate and did not go down well with most Bangladeshis.
#13619
The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a host of smaller parties refused a contest they said would be unfair unless supervised by a caretaker government of the kind seen in the previous four elections. But Sheikh Hasina scrapped the constitutional provision for that in 2011.

The BNP’s leader, Khaleda Zia, long a bitter rival to the prime minister, remains under what amounts to house arrest. Mohammad Hossain Ershad, a former dictator who leads the third-biggest party, Jatiyo, has been locked up in an army hospital since he belatedly joined the poll boycott. A fourth party, Jamaat-e-Islami, an Islamist and thuggish outfit, was banned from the polls for being too religious. On January 7th police arrested yet more opposition figures, including a close adviser to Mrs Zia as he left a meeting with journalists. Thousands of activists have been detained.

Political intimidation is officially explained away as an effort to stop the violence that has persisted since the AL claimed victory. On polling day alone, over 20 people were shot by police, or beaten or burned to death as rival goons from the BNP and the League clashed and as opposition thugs petrol-bombed buses, apparently to discourage voting. In some cases violent attacks appeared staged especially for television and other cameras.

Bangladesh’s election:
Sheikh Hasina plans to hang on to office after an electoral farce

http://www.economist.com/
Jan 11th 2014 | DHAKA AND DELHI | From the print edition

IT IS becoming hard to know whether Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s prime minister, is a cynically good actress or cut off from political reality. Smiling before journalists in Dhaka, the capital, on January 6th, she chided opposition parties for their “mistake” in boycotting general elections the day before, then waved aside doubts over the legitimacy of her victory.

Either way, her country’s democracy is in a rotten state. Of a potential electorate of 92m (out of more than 150m people), only a minority turned out. The government says just under 40% voted in contested seats; others think much less. It does not give Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League (AL), which has ruled since 2009, much of a basis for another term.

Many polling stations saw almost no voters, then suspiciously large numbers of ballots cast late in the day. Of the 300 constituencies, just over half, 153, had no contest at all, since only AL candidates or allies registered. In the capital voting took place in just nine of 20 seats.

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) will finance the P100 million rehabilitation works of health facilities in earthquake-torn Loon town in Bohol.

Mayor Lloyd Peter Lopez, also a licensed doctor, visited DOH-Central Visayas to inquire about the status of the financial assistance that the agency will extend to the LGU. “I learned from the assistant regional director, Lakshmi Legaspi, that the funding has been approved and the release is already processed,” he said.

Damaged Loon health facilities are the emergency hospital and two health centers. The DOH has allotted about P80 million for the emergency hospital rehabilitation while another P10 million for every health center.

The Red Cross and the DOH temporarily set up a tent hospital to provide health care services to the residents of Loon and neighboring areas. “For serious cases, we refer these to Tagbilaran City for proper treatment,” Lopez said. (FREEMAN)

The issue of immunity has been a key aspect of the case. Federal officials initially argued that Khobragade's immunity was limited to acts performed in the exercise of consular functions. But on Thursday, the U.S. accepted India's request to accredit her to the United Nations, which confers broader immunity. It would have been almost unprecedented for the U.S. to deny such a request unless she posed a national security risk.

The United States then asked India to waive the newly granted immunity so it could prosecute Khobragade, but the Indians refused. As a result, the U.S. requested her to leave the U.S.

Psaki said the charges against Khobragade "are not wiped," and before her departure she was told she's not permitted to return to the United States except to submit to the jurisdiction of the court.

Khobragade's name would be placed in visa and immigration lookout systems to prevent the routine issuance of any future visa, and upon her departure a warrant may be issued for her arrest, Psaki added. But James Margolin, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, said the office cannot comment on whether a warrant will be issued.

In her first public comments, Richard said Thursday that she had planned to work for a few years in the U.S. to support her family and then return to India.

"I never thought that things would get so bad here, that I would work so much that I did not have time to sleep or eat or have time to myself," she said in a statement released by the anti-trafficking group Safe Horizon.

She said she tried to return to India but her request was denied.

"I would like to tell other domestic workers who are suffering as I did â€" you have rights and do not let anyone exploit you," said Richard, who has been vilified in India and accused of blackmailing her employer.
#13631
"Her head is held high," he said. "She knows she has done no wrong and she looks forward to assuring that the truth is known."

The indictment paints a picture of Khobragade as a harsh employer who refused to allow her housekeeper, Sangeeta Richard, days off, even telling her "not to get sick because it was expensive."

U.S. prosecutors say Khobragade claimed to pay Richard $4,500 per month in order to obtain a visa for her. But they say Khobragade actually paid Richard $573 per month and often forced her to work more than 100 hours a week without a single full day off. The long hours meant Richard was earning $1.42 or less per hour, the indictment says.

After about six months of working for Khobragade, Richard fled and sought help from a nonprofit group that works with human trafficking victims because Khobragade refused to hand over her passport and allow her to return home, according to the indictment.

It also alleges that after the housekeeper fled, Khobragade and a relative tried to intimidate Richard's family in India by demanding they reveal Richard's whereabouts. Khobragade also launched a legal complaint against Richard in India.

"It's a shame this came to the fore over one individual," said Lalit Mansingh, India's ambassador to the U.S. from 2001 to 2004. "It sends the message that we're touchy about personal integrity, rather than about issues of global importance."

Ties with the United States have chilled in recent years over several serious policy issues, including India's delays in enacting more business-friendly reforms and the U.S. National Security Agency's alleged spying on New Delhi and other foreign governments.

The U.S. charges against Khobragade will remain pending until she can be brought to court, either through a waiver of immunity or her return to the U.S. without immunity status, according to the office of U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara.

Khobragade's lawyer, Daniel Arshack, said his client was "pleased to be returning to her country."

Psaki did not identify the U.S. diplomat but said it was the individual whose expulsion was sought by India. India's Foreign Ministry described the person as of the same rank as Khobragade and somehow involved in the case, the Press Trust of India news agency reported.

Much of India's outrage stems from the circumstances of Khobragade's arrest, which were seen as unnecessarily humiliating. Khobragade was picked up Dec. 13 and then strip-searched while in custody, which the U.S. Marshals say is common practice.

In India, the process was seen as a brutal affront to a middle-class, educated woman and a violation of courtesies afforded to diplomats the world over. The case has also led to complaints in India that the United States is not treating it like a powerful nation on equal footing with Washington.

"The case goes beyond the dignity of one diplomat," said Sreeram Chaulia, an international affairs expert at Jindal School of International Affairs in New Delhi. "India made its point, which is that you can't take India for granted."

India also unleashed a steady stream of retaliatory measures against U.S. diplomats. Some of the measures, such as preventing the American Center in New Delhi from screening movies, were seen by some observers as petty. But others raised alarm, including removing concrete traffic barriers around the U.S. Embassy and revoking diplomats' ID cards.

A visit to India next week by U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz has been canceled.
#13634
Many believed that Khobragade's return to India would be enough to give both countries a way to save face. India, however, asked the United States on Friday to withdraw a diplomat from the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, and the State Department said it was complying, although with "deep regret."

"We expect and hope that this will now come to closure, and the Indians will now take significant steps with us to improve our relationship and return it to a more constructive place," spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters in Washington.

Requesting the recall of a diplomat is a serious, and fairly unusual, move that sends a message to Washington that India's government doesn't accept the legitimacy of the court action in New York.

Given the strategic partnership between India and the U.S. and more than $100 billion in trade, any further escalation in the case would not be in the interest of either country, analysts said.

By KATY DAIGLE and MATTHEW PENNINGTON | Associated Press â€" 4 hours ago

NEW DELHI (AP) â€" The United States said Friday it was withdrawing a diplomat from India in hopes it would end a bitter dispute that started with the arrest and strip search of an Indian diplomat in New York.

Washington's announcement that it was complying with a demand from New Delhi for the expulsion of the U.S. official came hours after Devyani Khobragade, India's deputy consul general in New York, left the U.S.

Khobragade, 39, is accused of exploiting her Indian-born housekeeper and nanny, allegedly having her work more than 100 hours a week for low pay and lying about it on a visa form. Khobragade has maintained her innocence, and Indian officials have described her treatment as barbaric.

In an apparent compromise, she was indicted by a federal grand jury but also granted immunity that allowed her to leave the United States. Khobragade arrived in New Delhi on Friday, where she was met at the airport by her father and a sister.

"She just said, 'Papa, I love you,' and that's all. And she's happy to be back, her father, Uttam Khobragade, told reporters. Khobragade left the airport separately through an exit that is not accessible to the public.

"I've never personally heard of an inmate going to those extremes," Abernethy told The Huffington Post.

The officer at the scene, suspecting Scheller was driving drunk, followed up at the hospital. Officials there said they had spotted "an abnormality" in his body cavity. Scheller at first was reluctant to extract the goods but later agreed, police noted. The jewelry was found to have been stolen from a home, authorities said.

The teen is behind bars and facing a slew of charges, including theft, receiving stolen property and driving under the influence.

“Titanium is super strong and lightweight, so Toothless will be a very capable flyer,” said Chad Henry, CSIRO’s additive manufacturing operations manager.

Sophie’s mother, Melissah Lester, told the Canberra Times that her daughter is over the moon with excitement about everything that’s happened since she sent her letter. In fact, Sophie has been enthusiastically telling people that dragon breath can serve as a new kind of fuel.

“All her friends are now saying they want to be a scientist and Sophie says she now wants to work in the CSIRO,” Sophie’s mom said. “She’s saying Australian scientists can do anything.”

Media outlets in Australia and abroad began having so much fun with the dragon story that scientists at CSIRO realized they needed to do more than write Sophie back. They needed to make her a dragon. And so, on Friday, they created a 3D dragon printed out of titanium for the little girl.

The blue female dragon’s name: Toothless. Species: Seadragonus giganticus maximus.
#13650
Hill also praised Sophie for getting scientists at the agency to start asking bold new questions about uses for dragons.

“How much energy could (a dragon) produce?” she wrote. “Would dragon fuel be a low emissions option?

“Thanks for the fuel for thought, Sophie. We’re looking into it.”

In an email message to TODAY.com, Hill said she took the time to respond to Sophie as thoughtfully as she did because she wanted to “encourage her imagination.”

“We get a lot of enquiries, but the letter was so polite and hopeful I really couldn’t ignore it,” Hill explained. “We do a lot of great research, but it struck me that it’s really all too mainstream. An apology was in order for our lack of dragon research. I wanted to be encouraging and, like we are in all things, scientific.”
#13651
The young girl quickly learned that the scientific community in Australia consists of a bunch of big-hearted softies. Vanessa Hill, a spokeswoman for CSIRO, wrote a formal â€"albeit tongue-in-cheek â€" reply to Sophie in which she apologized for the lack of dragon research being done at the agency and pledged to remedy the situation.

“Over the past 87 odd years we have not been able to create a dragon or dragon eggs,” Hill wrote in her response, which she posted on CSIRO’s website. “We have sighted an eastern bearded dragon at one of our telescopes, observed dragonflies and even measured body temperatures of the mallee dragon. But our work has never ventured into dragons of the mythical, fire breathing variety.

“And for this Australia, we are sorry.”

Here’s the full text of the note from Sophie that started it all:

Hello Lovely Scientist

My name is Sophie and I am 7 years old. My dad told me about the scientists at the CSIRO. Would it be possible if you can make a dragon for me. I would like it if you could but if you can’t thats fine.

I would call it toothless if it was a girl and if it is a boy I would name it Stuart.

I would keep it in my special green grass area where there are lots of space. I would feed it raw fish and I would put a collar on it. If it got hurt I would bandage it if it hurt himself. I would play with it every weekend when there is no school.

Love from Sophie

Shortly before Christmas, Sophie Lester, 7, of Brisbane, Australia mailed an earnestly polite letter to Australia’s national science agency, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The letter (complete with a drawing) proved to be such a hit at the agency that smitten scientists tailor-made a titanium dragon for Sophie. They also told her they’d love to have her join their team when she’s old enough, so long as she manages to “stay curious.”

It’s pretty common for parents to field requests for pet puppies, kittens, hamsters, turtles and even the occasional snake or ferret. But what’s a mom and dad to do when their little girl wants a pet dragon?

That’s easy. Contact some scientists.

Partial strip searches

Partial strip searches are common at airports, for airport security, which often consists of:

    removal of shoes
    removal of coat and jacket
    removal of belt;
    untucking of shirt.

If there is reason to suspect hidden objects, the person is then taken to a private room, which consists of:

    removal of shirt
    removal of trousers
removal of underwear (boxers/briefs for men; bra/panties for women)

Legality of strip searches

In North America, civil lawsuits, as well as criminal code changes against strip searches have usually been successful when a person is strip searched by someone of the opposite sex, especially in cases where a woman has been strip searched by a male guard or guards. The more disputed legal cases have often involved the presence of people of the other gender during a strip search. Some of these cases have been less successful because of the legal technicality of who was actually performing the strip search, i.e. if more than one guard is present, the search is often (legally) said to be being performed by the person or people giving the orders or instructions to the person or people being searched.

Another legal issue is that of blanket strip searches, such as in jails where detainees are routinely strip searched prior to conviction of a crime. Courts have often held that blanket strip searches are acceptable only for convicted persons. For detainees pending trial, there must be a reasonable suspicion that the detainees is in possession of weapons or other contraband before a strip search can be conducted. The same often holds true for other situations such as airport security personnel and customs officers, but the dispute often hinges on what constitutes reasonable suspicion.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A strip search is a practice of searching a person for weapons or other contraband suspected of being hidden on their body or inside their clothing, and not found by performing a frisk search, by requiring the person to remove some or all of his or her clothing. The search may involve an official performing an Intimate Person Search and inspecting their personal effects. A strip search is more intrusive than a frisk and requires legal authority. Regulations covering strip searches vary considerably, and may be mandatory in some situations or discretionary in others.

Photos Unlimited / Pure Liquid Carbon Dioxide
January 09, 2014, 09:44:23 PM

Outside of the Okinawa Trough near Taiwan, the Champagne Vent of the Mariana Trench is the only known underwater area where liquid carbon dioxide exists. Discovered in early 2005, the vent got its name because of the bubbles of what scientists originally thought was harmless water that sort of looked like Korbel. Upon closer inspection, they realized that those bubbles were actually CO2.

While ingesting pure carbon dioxide would clearly be bad news for any of us, it seems that vents such as this one, deemed “white smokers” due to their lower temperatures, might be the source of life itself. As the old “primordial soup” theory loses more and more ground, the idea that life began in deep waters, around vents such as Champagne, has gained more credibility. A white smoker such as Champagne, with its lower temperatures and abundance of chemicals and energy, could well provide the perfect recipe for life to form and thrive. -- http://listverse.com/

Sirs Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen enjoy the fresh air in Sheridan Square.
(Photo via @SirPatStew)

So do you think Sir PatStew and Ian McKellen visited Stonewall Inn before or after having a tipple or two at McSorley's ? I ask because when last we saw our jolly heroes in these particularly fashion-forward (cowboy-esque?) getups, they were double-fisting some brews of the dark and light varieties . Either way, they seem to be enjoying a meditative moment with the Gay Liberation sculptures in Sheridan Square. Let's hope they make this a pre-show ritual before they open on Broadway in Waiting for Godot and No Man's Land. -- http://www.theatermania.com/

Going strong: The real-life Eric and Liz recalled how Liz's climax was still going strong well after the couple had stopped having sex.

'I started hopping up and down to see if that would do anything,' Liz said about her first frenzied hour.

'I started trying to drink wine to see if that would calm down my system. I tried just about every possible thing I could do to stop having an orgasm.'

Eric drove his partner to the ER, where, he recalled, some people stared and shared their insights.

'As much of a relief as it was to have her in the hospital, now there were eyes on me and I was still feeling very tense and uptight and uncertain about what was going on and what was going to happen,' Eric said.

Liz's orgasm continued for another hour in the hospital before it finally waned.

About an hour into her epic climax, Liz started to panic. By the second hour, the panting woman was rushed to hospital where medical staff thought she was in labor.

Liz's orgasm lasted for over three hours before she finally found relief.

The young couple shared their bizarre story during last night's TLC show 'Sex Sent Me to the ER'.

Liz, who didn't give her last name, recounted how she tried everything from jumping to drinking to shake the ache.

And what exactly goes on during one of these fake funerals? While there are several companies, they all provide basically the same experience. First, participants put on yellow hemp robes, which are traditional death garments, and then pose for photos that will be used during services later on. After getting dressed up, the groups participate in a series of rather morbid activities. Often, the soon-to-be-deceased write out their wills and read them in front of the group. Many times, they’ll create their own epitaphs or work on goodbye letters to their families, encouraging their loved ones to live better lives. Eventually, it’s time for the funeral, and the attendees crawl into their own caskets. The lids are nailed on, and the “dead” are plunged into darkness. While they think about their lives, they can hear someone sprinkling dirt on top of their coffins as “mourners” cry in the audience. Ten to 15 agonizing minutes later, the lids are removed, and the dead are “reborn,” hopefully having learned not to take life for granted.

However, there’s a darker, more serious reason behind these fake funerals. South Korea is a rapidly developing country, and its schools and businesses are fiercely competitive. All that pressure to succeed coupled with the self-inflicted deaths of several Korean celebrities has led to a staggering number of suicides. In fact, South Korea has more suicides than any other nation in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. Many believe that fake funerals are a way of combating this disturbing trend by showing people what death is really like and how their deaths will affect their loved ones.
#13674
Fake funerals are part of a South Korean movement known as “well-dying.” The idea is to inspire people to live better, fuller lives by confronting them with the reality of death. After attending their own internments, it’s hoped that attendees will get along better with their families, live a life without regrets and even become better workers. Not surprisingly, big businesses are totally down with that. Hoping to motivate their work force, Samsung required 900 of its employees to attend. That’s nothing compared to the Kyobo Insurance Company which ordered every single one of its 4,000 employees to take part in the meetings.

The Whole Bushel

Everybody dies, but in South Korea, some people die twice . . . sort of. Fake funerals are all the rage in the Land of the Morning Calm, andâ€"among other bizarre activitiesâ€"feature healthy people crawling into their own caskets. But despite their ghoulish nature, these bogus burials aren’t actually celebrations of death. Quite the contrary: They’re more like motivational seminars, complete with catchy names like the “Coffin Academy.”

In A Nutshell

Have you ever wondered what it’s going to be like after you die? Well, if you’re curious, you can visit South Korea and attend a fake funeral. These “well-dying” courses are meant to inspire people to live better lives as well as combat the rising suicide rate. At your fake funeral, you’ll participate in a number of macabre activities that culminates in a fake burial.
