No new monuments can be placed on the lawn until the lawsuit is settled, but The Satanic Temple better watch out: PETA, a Hindu group and the elusive Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster have all requested a spot near the Capitol, too.

Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves argues the statue reflects the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and throughout the state and would serve as a monument to their beliefs. It could be used for other purposes too.

"The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation," Greaves said in a statement.

if only the design is such that it is convertible and could also serve as a bed on which one can dream. ;D

The Satanic group isn't so much an organized religious body filled with rites and rituals as it is a rabble-rousing crew of political activists who see Satan as a "literary construct" as opposed to a real, hoofed figure.

how reassuring.

"He walked over to the sculpture, and it was just chilling because he touched the knee of the Jesus the Homeless sculpture, and closed his eyes and prayed," Schmalz says. "It was like, that's what he's doing throughout the whole world: Pope Francis is reaching out to the marginalized."

Back at St. Alban's in Davidson, the rector reports that the Jesus the Homeless statue has earned more followers than detractors. It is now common, he says, to see people come, sit on the bench, rest their hand on the bronze feet and pray.

http://www.npr.org/
#13513
A spokesman at St. Michael's says appreciation of the statue "was not unanimous," and the church was being restored, so a new work of art was out of the question. That statue found a home in front of the Jesuit School of Theology at the University of Toronto.

A spokesperson at St. Patrick's in New York says they liked the homeless Jesus, but their cathedral is also being renovated and they had to turn it down.

The most high-profile installation of the bronze Jesus on a park bench will be on the Via della Conciliazione, the avenue leading to St. Peter's Basilica â€" if the city of Rome approves it. Schmalz traveled to the Vatican last November to present a miniature to the pope himself.
#13514
The creator is a Canadian sculptor and devout Catholic named Timothy Schmalz. From his studio in Ontario, Schmalz says he understands that his Jesus the Homeless is provocative.

"That's essentially what the sculpture is there to do," he says. "It's meant to challenge people."

He says he offered the first casts to St. Michael's Cathedral in Toronto and St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York. Both declined.
#13515
The sculpture is intended as a visual translation of the passage in the Book of Matthew, in which Jesus tells his disciples, "As you did it to one of the least of my brothers, you did it to me." Moreover, Buck says, it's a good Bible lesson for those used to seeing Jesus depicted in traditional religious art as the Christ of glory, enthroned in finery.

"We believe that that's the kind of life Jesus had," Buck says. "He was, in essence, a homeless person."

This lakeside college town north of Charlotte has the first Jesus the Homeless statue on display in the United States. Catholic Charities of Chicago plans to install its statue when the weather warms up. The Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., is said to be interested in one, too.
#13516
Some neighbors feel that it's an insulting depiction of the son of God, and that what appears to be a hobo curled up on a bench demeans the neighborhood.

The bronze statue was purchased for $22,000 as a memorial for a parishioner, Kate McIntyre, who loved public art. The rector of this liberal, inclusive church is the Rev. David Buck, a 65-year-old Baptist-turned-Episcopalian who seems not at all averse to the controversy, the double takes and the discussion the statue has provoked.

"It gives authenticity to our church," he says. "This is a relatively affluent church, to be honest, and we need to be reminded ourselves that our faith expresses itself in active concern for the marginalized of society."
#13517
The reaction was immediate. Some loved it; some didn't.

"One woman from the neighborhood actually called police the first time she drove by," says David Boraks, editor of DavidsonNews.net. "She thought it was an actual homeless person."

That's right. Somebody called the cops on Jesus.

"Another neighbor, who lives a couple of doors down from the church, wrote us a letter to the editor saying it creeps him out," Boraks added.

Statue Of A Homeless Jesus Startles A Wealthy Community

by John Burnett
April 13, 2014

The Rev. David Buck sits next to the Jesus the Homeless statue that was installed in front of his church, St. Alban's Episcopal, in Davidson, N.C.
John Burnett/NPR

A new religious statue in the town of Davidson, N.C., is unlike anything you might see in church.

The statue depicts Jesus as a vagrant sleeping on a park bench. St. Alban's Episcopal Church installed the homeless Jesus statue on its property in the middle of an upscale neighborhood filled with well-kept townhomes.

Jesus is huddled under a blanket with his face and hands obscured; only the crucifixion wounds on his uncovered feet give him away.

The presence of HMS Echo is particularly significantâ€"she has very sophisticated underwater mapping technology, and would be able to give a much better sense of just what the seabed looks likeâ€"its contours and its depths.

The Bluefin 21 is able to work at those depths, at first using sonar and then, if probable wreckage or the flight recorders are detected, it will be fitted with lights and cameras to establish whether they have, in fact, reached the right place. However long that takes, the search has come a very long way in just a week.

http://news.yahoo.com/
#13547
Unfortunately, because it took weeks to establish that the most likely last resting place of the Boeing 777 was 700 miles further north than originally believed, the Ocean Shield only left Perth on March 31 and arrived in the zone as the power in the location beacon batteries was beginning to fade. But the ship had luck on its side. On its second day of tracking along a 205-mile long arc, it picked up signals “consistent with a black box recorder.” This was quite a feat, considering that the seabed in this region is 2.8 miles below the surface, very poorly mapped, covered in a layer of silt, and in complete darkness. Signals coming from a beacon at that depth are affected by large variations in the water temperature.
#13548
One thing is for sure: Since the Ocean Shield reached the area roughly 1,000 miles northwest of Perth, the search took a much more productive turn. After weeks of false reports of floating wreckage spotted by satellites, suddenly all talk of chasing floating wreckage ended, and attention moved to the Ocean Shield and its ping detector, which moves through the ocean a mile beneath the ship.

Although the Ocean Shield belongs to the Royal Australian Navy, it’s crewed by civilian specialists. It only went into service in the summer of 2012. It was built in Norway and is classed as an offshore support vessel. The Australians intended to use it as part of a disaster relief task force but it turned out to be ideally suited to the challenge of finding Flight MH370: it has a massive 60-ton crane that would be able to raise wreckage from the water and was able to deploy both the ping detector and the Bluefin 21 robot submersible that would be the first device launched if the location of the flight data recorder was confirmed.
#13549
Only 24 hours earlier, air marshal Houston had put the size of the search area at 18,000 square miles. Following Prime Minister Abbott’s announcement some Australian sources are claiming that the area was now reduced to 10 kilometers by 10 kilometersâ€"about 36 square miles. If true, that’s a dramatic advance in the feasibility of finding where the Boeing 777 went down.that a ping detector towed by the specially equipped Australian vessel Ocean Shield has let specialists aboard British warship HMS Echo triangulate the data and get a far more accurate “fix” on where four pings were coming from on the seabed.

“Echo has done a radio scan,” said Thomas, “an echo scan if you like, along the bottom and they’ve had a return which is positive, which may indicate the wreckage of the plane.

The Ship That Saved MH370 Search

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott surprised a lot of people Friday when he said, “We are confident that we know the position of the black box flight recorder to within some kilometers.” The man leading the search for the remains of Malaysian Flight MH370, air marshal Angus Houston, had not been anywhere near as specific as this. Had the prime minister, talking to a Chinese audience, got out ahead of the professionals in an excess of enthusiasm?

Cars used in ambush of Cebu lawyer found

By Davinci S. Maru, Gerome M. Dalipe and Jill Tatoy-Rabor
Thursday, March 20, 2014

CEBU CITY -- The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Central Visayas named four officials of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) in Central Visayas as “suspects” in the ambush-slay of lawyer Noel Archival and his two companions.

This came after a joint operation of the NBI and the Cebu City Police Office’s Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) on Thursday traced the two vehicles that were allegedly used in the shooting to the HPG impounding area in Barangay Lahug in Cebu City.

“The (suspects) will be afforded due process. We will be issuing subpoenas to them so that they can answer,” said NBI Regional Director Max Salvador.

Supt. Romualdo Iglesia, HPG Central Visayas chief; Chief Insp. Eduardo Mara, HPG 7 operations officer; Sr. Insp. Joselito Lerion, and SPO4 Edwin Galan, HPG 7 chief clerk, were linked to the case based on accounts of witnesses and footage from CCTV cameras near the crime scene, among others.

Iglesia, Mara and Lerion are among the 14 police officers who are facing administrative and criminal complaints that Archival had filed before the Office of the Deputy Ombudsman for the Military and Other Law Enforcement Offices (Moleo) in December 2013.

Salvador would not conclude if the four HPG officials had used the impounded vehicles in the ambush-slay of Archival, his aide Candido Miñoza and his driver Alejandro Jayme in Dalaguete town last February 18.

He also could not say what the motive was.

“We are conducting an open investigation to bring out the motives,” Salvador told reporters.

Carrying a search warrant, operatives of the NBI and Swat went to the HPG 7 impounding area Thursday morning to check the vehicles believed to have been used in the ambush.

VEHICLES USED IN AMBUSH. Two of the cars said to have been used in the fatal ambush of criminal lawyer Noel Archival and his companions on Feb. 18, 2014 were found in the impounding garage of the Highway Patrol Group in Sudlon, Lahug, Cebu City. One of these cars is the Toyota Vios (above) being checked out by Archival’s brothers Nelson (leftmost) and Nestor (in white polo) and NBI agent Jose Ermie Monsanto (in black shirt). (Amper Campan)

Crockett sat quietly for four days in the St Luke's Hospice charity shop in Grays

Jenny Munro said the sofa had to be ripped to free the cat

Crockett was discovered a day later by the sofa's new owners.

Shop manager Jenny Munro said: "[They] heard a soft miaow sound and, on further investigation of the sofa, saw two claws poking out of the material which moved away when touched.

"In order to release the cat they had to rip the material under the sofa as Crockett had lodged himself well into the back."

The sofa's new owners, who wish to remain anonymous, said: ''We are so thrilled that he is safe and sound and was found in time."

'Claws poking out'

The Lowes believe the grey tabby sneaked inside the sofa outside their house before the base was replaced.

Mrs Lowe said they immediately noticed he was missing but could not think where he might have gone.

David Emery, from St Luke's, said the sofa went through "normal routine checks" and had been taken to the shop where it was sold and delivered to new owners on 27 March.

Cat trapped for five days in charity shop sofa

Pauline and Bill Lowe were "delighted" to be reunited with Crockett by charity shop manager Jenny Munro

A cat spent five days trapped in a sofa donated to a charity shop before being found by the couple who bought it.

The three-seater settee was given to St Luke's Hospice charity shop in Grays, Essex, by Pauline and Bill Lowe, both 66, from Corringham.

Ten-year-old Crockett was discovered when the new owners heard "a soft miaow" coming from the furniture.

Mrs Lowe said she had been "devastated" to lose Crockett and the family were "delighted" to have him back.

Charity shop staff took two sofas from the Lowes' house in York Avenue on 24 March, but one had to be taken apart to get it through the door.
