The bra is a gimmick by lingerie brand Ravijour, which says it is not for sale, but forms part of a publicity campaign for the marque's 10th anniversary.

"We wanted to do something that wouldn't just appeal to people who wear our products, but also to lift the romantic mood between men and women," spokeswoman Yuka Tamura said.

In a promotional video, viewers are shown how the glittering gold lame bra conceals sensors placed inside the cup, which send wireless signals to a smartphone.

The app studies the heart's changing pattern and the duration of the change, which the makers say will allow it to distinguish between activities as diverse as jogging and flirting, where a woman's requirements of her bra are quite distinct.

In a promotional video clip, a toned model stands in a dimly lit studio wearing only her underwear, which keeps the insistent alpha male at bay because he cannot unhook the clasp.

It is "a revolutionary bra that knows truly how women feel," the video says.

Japanese bra only unhooks for true love, say makers
AFP Relax â€" 18 hours ago

In a long-awaited fusion between hot-blooded hormones and cold-headed engineering, a Japanese lingerie company has produced a bra they claim will only unlock when the wearer is really in love.

The "True Love Tester" uses sensors and a special gadget linked to a mobile device to analyse the pattern and speed of the user's heart beat in the heat of the moment.

If the app determines the woman's feelings are for real, the clasp at the front pops open to allow matters between lovers to take their course.

MYRTLE CORBIN â€" The Four-Legged Woman

Myrtle Corbin, was known as the Four-Legged Woman â€" however that moniker was slightly misleading. While at a glance one could plainly see four legs dangling beyond the hem of her dress â€" only one pair belonged to her, the other set to her dipygus twin sister.

Born in Lincoln County, TN in 1868 and spending most of her childhood in Blount County, AL â€" where she can be found in the 1880 census â€" her condition was incredibly rare. The tiny body of her twin was only fully developed from the waist down and even then it was malformed â€" tiny and possessing only three toes on each foot. Myrtle was able to control the limbs of her sister but was unable to use them for walking and she herself had a difficult time getting around as she was born with a clubbed foot. Technically, the ‘Four-Legged Woman’ only had one good, usable leg.

Myrtle was a popular attraction with P.T. Barnum, and later with Ringling Bros. and Coney Island. Her popularity was likely linked to her showmanship â€" she would often dress the extra limbs with socks and shoes matching her own and this gave her a truly surreal appearance. Myrtle was so popular that she was able to earn as much as $450 dollars a week.

At the age of 19 Myrtle married a doctor named Clinton Bicknell. It was then that other aspects of her bizarre anatomy became evident. It seems that her twin sister was also fully sexually formed â€" thus Myrtle possessed two vaginas. She had four daughters and a son and it has been rumored that three of her children were born from one set of organs and two from the other. Whether this is true or not; it is medically possible. In Anomalies and Curiosities of Medicine by George M. Gould and Walter L. Pyle it was observed that both vaginas menstruated â€" thus indicating both were possibly sexually functional.

Myrtle passed on May 6, 1928, surrounded by family and friends.

Heto ang kanyang katapat!

Michels was even able to enlist Daniel Salin, the set designer and producer for Banksy’s famous LA Barely Legal exhibition in 2006 which featured a live elephant that had been painted by the elusive street-artist.  Michals admired the way Salin produced Barely Legal and thought he would be the perfect person to locate a space and layout for the show.

“The space will NOT look like a traditional gallery with fluorescent or bright light,” Michals emphasized. “We’re taking a completely different approach.” Instead of coldness of sparsely decorated stark white walls, the environment will seem more warm and intimate. Lights will be ambient, allowing for the artwork to be spotlighted drawing specific attention to each unique piece.

For Michals, a simple part-time project has now turned into the largest multi-artist exhibition of cat-inspired works for sale ever exhibited in one place. Of course, any passing cat would be totally bored by the whole thing.

Cat Art Show will be on view at 101/exhibit gallery, 6025 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles; January 25 and 26 and February 1 and 2. The show is free of charge.

Some of the works are even sentimental for the artists. Tracey Emin, one of the most famous members of the Young British Artists movement, for instance, is contributing a self-portrait of herself and her cat titled Me and Docket in the Style of Gerhard Richter. The print, taken in 2002, comes from an emotional time for the artistâ€"Docket went missing. This made headlines due to the posters Emin put up in her London neighborhood, an act people mistook as an original work of art. The misunderstanding propelled the search and led to Docket’s return.

Other works include pieces by Marc Dennis, who is known for his hyperrealist paintings, photographer Frank Stefanko, and Christian Furrâ€"the youngest artist to date to officially paint the Queen (he was commissioned for Queen Elizabeth II in 1995).

FAILE 2014, Lost & Found

FAILE’s piece was inspired by the idea of “lost cat” flyers so often seen on street signs and building walls. The final product is an appropriately “salmon” colored quilt. “We thought of older ladies that really love their cats and this lead to scrapbooking, quilting and somehow modern witches in motorcycle clubs,” the Brooklyn-based duo Patrick McNeil and Patrick Mille that form FAILE said in a statement. The various woven flyer-like images along with a multitude of slogans such as ‘GUNS BULLETS BALLET’ and ‘TEASIN’ + PLEASIN” turn the quilt into a cult symbol of outlaw kittens.

Michals was originally undertaking a collaboration project with a friend to create a central place on the web for all things cat inspiredâ€"art, videos, etc.â€"aiming to hit major cat showcases and competitions, like Meet the Breeds, to “create something like Best in Show, but with cats.”

The project fell through, so Michals brought the idea into her professional life as an art and cultural journalist. “I decided to reach out to a few artists and gallerists I know and see if I could get them involved,” Michals told The Daily Beast. Before she knew it, she had enlisted forty artists and the list kept growing.

Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the famous Obama “HOPE” posterâ€"was one of the first to sign on to the project. Staying with his propaganda style, Fairey chose to portray a political black cat as a member of the Black Panther Party. The feline sports the traditional black turtleneck and jacket of the political group while the background is comprised of various news clippings from the race wars of the civil rights movement.

Just when you thought it was safe to browse the internet without running into another article on what our feline houseguests really think or getting trapped in a YouTube cat-hole, we’ve got one more way for you to distract yourself: a cat-themed art show.

That’s right, folksâ€"an entire art exhibition all about felines has landed in Los Angeles.

Capitalizing on the unendingly-popular cat craze, Susan Michalsâ€"the exhibition curatorâ€"said she made sure to avoid the novelty aspect of kitschy cat material and keep their influence strictly inspirational: cats as muses, allowing each artist to depict their own work of art based on the animals’ “unpredictable personalities, and the beautiful traits of their physicality” in various types of mediums including painting, photography, and sculpture.

Female tourists aiming their cameras at the animals in front of them at a wildlife center in Zimbabwe had no idea the real "Kodak moment" was happening directly behind them.

A bull elephant executing the ultimate photobomb was just at the tourists' backs as they were snapping photos of what they likely thought were priceless images in front of them.

The elephant photobomb moment was captured by Marcus Soderland, a fellow tourist volunteering alongside the group of women at the Imire Rhino & Wildlife Conservation center in Wedza, Zimbabwe.

"While they were posing for the cameras one of the other handlers got an elephant called Makavhuzi to go up behind them," Soderland explained, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail.

"Eventually they noticed his presence and turned around and reacted with laughs, surprised looks and smiles," said Soderland, who could not be reached today by ABCNews.com.

The group of women were from countries around the world including England, Norway and Australia, the Daily Mail reports.

In Japan, the hunting is done by a select group of fishermen. When a pod of dolphins has been spotted, fishing boats move into position. One end of a steel pipe is lowered into the water, and the fisherman aboard the boats strike the pipe with mallets. This is done at strategic points around the pod, in an effort to herd them toward land. The clamor may confuse or alarm the dolphins, which move away from the noise. The pod of dolphins is thus driven into a bay by the fishermen, which is quickly closed off with nets to prevent escape. As the dolphins are initially quite agitated, they are left to calm down over night. The following day, fishermen enter the bay in small boats, and the dolphins are caught one at a time and killed. The primary method of dispatch was for a long time to cut the dolphin's throat, severing blood vessels, and death was due to exsanguination. However, the government banned this method and now the officially sanctioned method requires that a metal pin be driven into the cervical region ("neck") of the dolphin, severing its brainstem, which causes it to die within seconds, according to a memo from Senzo Uchida, the executive secretary of the Japan Cetacean Conference on Zoological Gardens and Aquariums.

Lifestyle, Culture and Arts / Taiji dolphin drive hunt
January 27, 2014, 06:34:39 PM
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The dolphin drive hunt in Taiji, Japan, takes place every year from September to April. According to the Japanese Fisheries Research Agency, 1,623 dolphins were caught in Wakayama Prefecture in 2007 for human consumption or resale to dolphinariums, and most of these were caught at Taiji. The annual dolphin hunt provides income for local residents, but has received international criticism for both the cruelty of the dolphin killing and the high mercury levels of the dolphin meat.
#13461
Many said the relationship between Japan and the United States is strong enough to endure an honest airing of opinions, and that the number of Japanese who feel strongly about the dolphin hunt is limited in any case.

“Frankly I think it’s good that someone with that kind of credentials can say the kind of thing that others would hesitate to say,” said Ellis S. Krauss, a professor of Japanese politics at the School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Although the message could have been conveyed more subtly and privately, he said, “It would have gotten less attention if Caroline Kennedy hadn’t said it.”

Minoru Morita, a political analyst who runs a think tank in Tokyo, says he does not think the flare-up will have a lasting effect on her popularity. “I don’t think many Japanese felt good about her criticizing Japan’s food culture,” he said. “But most Japanese have very fond feelings for her, and for the era of her father, and that won’t go away easily.”

Mark Landler contributed reporting from Washington, and Rick Gladstone from New York.
#13462
Nor has Japan been entirely negative about her outspokenness. Some of the comments posted on Twitter expressed admiration for her as a woman who has the courage to speak her mind in Japan, a nation still dominated by men.

But others quickly criticized her for sticking her nose into something that they say is not her, or any other foreigner’s, business. Some angrily reminded her that Commodore Matthew C. Perry opened Japan at gunpoint in 1853 to secure ports for American whalers.

“We don’t want to be told such things by Americans who used to kill whales just for their oil,” said one user. Another was succinct: “Stupid woman! Go home!”
#13463
Her willingness to engage in touchy issues may prove a particular headache for the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, a conservative who has pledged to maintain close ties with Washington. Mr. Abe, who has 260,000 followers on Twitter, has been popular in Japan’s small but very vocal community of nationalist Web users.

At least one noted woman also spoke out on the dolphin hunt. A day after the ambassador’s post, Yoko Ono published an open letter to the fishermen to stop the killings she said have given Japan a bad name internationally. (Dolphin meat is prized in a limited number of places in Japan, but conservatives bridle at foreign dictates of what Japan should do.)

Despite the kerfuffle, Ms. Kennedy remains enormously popular in Japan, Mr. Spector and others say. Partly, this is because of the aura here that still surrounds the presidency of her father, John F. Kennedy, for whom many older Japanese feel an almost teary-eyed nostalgia. When Ms. Kennedy was named as ambassador, Japanese television stations repeatedly broadcast images of her as a little girl on her father’s lap, or standing forlornly at his funeral.
#13464
“How do you rein someone like her in?” said Dave Spector, an American who has worked in Japan for more than 25 years as a television commentator and who has followed Ms. Kennedy’s ambassadorship closely. “Her father is on the 50-cents coin, for crying out loud. She is bigger than life.”

Her fame is so formidable, he said, that she is vulnerable to people looking for meaning in her every move. On Wednesday, a routine meeting with the South Korean ambassador to Japan generated articles in both countries. The news agencies emphasized that a sore point between the two countries had come up during the meeting.

The Kyodo news agency of Japan, in its headline, quoted the Yonhap news agency of South Korea as saying that the two ambassadors discussed the so-called comfort women issue, but neither article makes clear if she even made a comment on the matter. Many scholars say the women, tens of thousands of them Korean, were forced to serve in wartime Japanese military brothels, but many Japanese conservatives say they were prostitutes.
#13465
The United States Embassy in Japan referred all requests for comment to Washington, and on Friday, the White House spokesman, Patrick Ventrell, said that “Ambassador Kennedy is doing a great job representing the United States in Japan.” The State Department said that even before Ms. Kennedy’s confirmation hearing last fall, she received numerous comments about Japan’s dolphin hunting practices and decided she wanted to address the issue. She consulted with the department about the administration’s policies before posting on Twitter, an official said.

Commentators in Japan say some of the turbulence may be inevitable, since the Obama administration chose in Ms. Kennedy a public figure with the star power to dazzle the Japanese public, but who is also not afraid to speak out. Even if some officials felt jittery with her approach, it might prove difficult for them to say so publicly.
#13466
Japanese officials greeted Ms. Kennedy’s comments on the dolphin killings, which the State Department says it supported, with a mixture of irritation and seeming confusion.

Yoshinobu Nisaka, the governor of the prefecture where this week’s hunt took place, said in a news conference that “we live on the lives of cows and pigs.”

“It is not appropriate to say only dolphin hunting is inhumane,” he continued.

The top government spokesman, Yoshihide Suga, defended the hunt â€" the same one filmed in the 2009 American documentary “The Cove” â€" as being in accordance with international law. But he quickly added that Japan would try to “explain our stance to the United States.”
#13467
The comment, coming soon after her embassy issued a rare criticism of the prime minister for visiting a controversial war shrine, indicated that the often reserved Ms. Kennedy might be more of an outspoken envoy than many expected, willing to take on subjects the Japanese prefer to discuss behind closed doors. And she is doing so using a social medium that allows for little of the nuance that shapes formal Japanese diplomatic communication; Ms. Kennedy is an active Twitter user, posting in English and Japanese for her more than 75,000 followers.

Her stark criticism of the hunt comes as the United States is trying to strike a delicate balance â€" nudging Japan to stop antagonizing its neighbors over their shared wartime history, while also encouraging its support for a stronger American presence in the region as a counterbalance to China.
#13468
But Ms. Kennedy has quickly surprised her Japanese hosts by being undiplomatically frank on delicate issues. She created a stir recently when she publicly expressed concern about a bloody annual dolphin hunt that is widely condemned abroad, but that many Japanese view as a part of their traditional culture.

“Deeply concerned by inhumaneness of drive hunt dolphin killing,” Ms. Kennedy wrote last week on Twitter. “USG opposes drive hunt fisheries,” she added, referring to the United States government’s stance on the hunts, in which dolphins are herded into coves so they can be hacked to death.

TOKYO â€" Japan went into a collective swoon two months ago when Caroline Kennedy arrived as the United States’ ambassador. The appointment of someone with such celebrity appeal â€" who offered a living link to a golden age when America was still reassuringly strong and confident â€" appeared to be proof that Washington was finally giving Japan the embrace it craved.

The company is said to have two simple rules: Ensure customers get what they want, and they get it fast. This mantra has led to astounding growth, as sales have grown on average by 11% annually since 2008. Even more astonishing is the reality that from 2009 to 2012, it averaged more than one store opening each day, opening 1,745 stores in 1,461 days.

This unearthly growth and success has led to the massive fortune that Ortega has amassed, yet it has been reported that he has remained modest, as he eats in the company's cafeteria and even wears the same thing to work each day.

Unfortunately, investment advice and business tips from Ortega are few and far between, but if we can learn anything from him, it's that massive fortune doesn't always have to mean massive fame, and seeking to satisfy the customer first is always a great place to start.

Ortega is Spain's wealthiest man, and he founded Inditex, which is the parent company of retailer Zara, almost 40 years ago. He began his career as a clothing manufacturer in the 1960s and early 1970s as he steadily grew his operation to include multiple factories. Then in 1975, the first Zara store was opened, and Ortega's empire has been growing ever since.

Yet despite the massive fortune he accumulated over the last five decades, Ortega has been notoriously content with avoiding the public spotlight, and the first photograph of him wasn't published until 1999.

The clothing empire

Inditex now has 6,249 stores across the globe, with more than 1,800 from its flagship Zara. It had 47 stores in the U.S at the end of October last year. In total, its empire spans more than 85 countries. In 2012, it had more than 120,000 employees and 15.9 billion euros (roughly $21.5 billion) in sales. Through the first nine months of 2013, it has seen sales grow by 8% after factoring out currency impacts.

To put that in perspective, that's more than the reported fortunes of Jeff Bezos of Amazon and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, combined ($63 billion).

An article in Fortune once noted that Ortega is "difficult to know, impossible to interview, and incredibly secretive," so there's good reason that he's not a household name like some of the others who are among the richest people in the world.

Yet interestingly enough, the clothing company he founded and still owns nearly 60% of is actually the world's largest clothing company. So while he may not be well-known, you may be wearing one of this products.

Ask anyone who the world's richest person is, and you'll likely get a response of Bill Gates, Carlos Slim, or Warren Buffett. It turns out those are Nos. 1, 2, and 4, and the person ranking third will likely surprise you.

Buffett has a fortune hovering around $59 billion according to the latest estimates, and the mogul of Mexico, Carlos Slim, is worth an estimated $68.9 billion. Yet the man splitting the two is Amancio Ortega, whose net worth is said to be at $65.4 billion.

The debate of who invented the fortune cookie in its present American state was so hotly contested that there was even a legal battle of it. In 1983, descendents of Hagiwara and of David Jung went to court to see who had the strongest claim to the cookie. David Jung, once owner of Los Angeles’s Hong Kong Noodle Company, claimed to have invented the cookie when he inserted Bible verses in the hard pastry and handed the cookies out to the city’s homeless as inspiration.

Hagiwara won, giving the Japanese contender the credit for bringing the iconic fortune cookie to America.

Fortune cookies gained popularity during World War II, where they first started popping up in California restaurantsâ€"not surprising, given the number of Japanese immigrants who settled in the state. Before the war, the path of the fortune cookie is a little less straightforward. One of the major contenders for bringing the sweet treat to America is Makoto Hagiwara, who served them with tea at the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco.

It’s thought that the cookies became known as a staple in Chinese food because of the number of Chinese restaurants that opened in the wake of Japanese restaurants that were forced to close during World War II. When Japanese immigrants were forced into internment camps, Chinese restaurants picked up on the dessert cookie. And when soldiers started passing through California on their return from the Pacific front, they were introduced to the cookie and helped spread it to the rest of the country.

These larger, darker version of the fortune cookie have been made by small Japanese bakeries decades before they were ever known in Americaâ€"or China. So far, some of the earliest known mentions of them are in literature and art dating back to 1878, while the earliest mentions of fortune cookies in the United States are from 1907â€"1914. Other mentions of the fortune cookie are found in undated works by a Japanese author who lived from 1790â€"1843.

And while they might have been invented there, fortune cookies aren’t even that popular in Japan. When university graduate student Yasuko Nakamachi published her findings on the source of the fortune cookie, it didn’t even get much press.

So how did they become synonymous with Chinese cuisine in America?

The oldest references to the creation of fortune cookies as we know them today comes from a handful of family-run bakeries outside of Kyoto. There, they’re called suzu senbei (“bell crackers”), tsujiura senbei (“fortune crackers”), or omikuji senei (“written fortune crackers”). They look a little different than the ones that Americans are accustomed to seeing, made with a darker batter that usually contains sesame, and the cookies are slightly larger. Instead of being wrapped inside the cookie, the fortune is usually pinched between the cookie’s two arms. The resemblance, though, is undeniable.

The Whole Bushel

Ask any American what the key components to an authentic Chinese meal is and they’re almost guaranteed to include fortune cookies in the list. There’s always a handful thrown into take-out bags, and there are always some left on the table at a Chinese buffet. The only problem is, this absolutely quintessential Chinese food is absolutely not Chinese at all.

In fact, they’re not even served in China. There, they’re known as an American thing.

In A Nutshell

No Chinese meal would be complete without elegantly folded, fortune-stuffed cookies for dessert. The only problem is, they’re not Chinese. They originated in Japan and are mentioned in fiction and art as early as 1878. Just how they became associated with Chinese restaurants is a bit hazy, but researchers believe it has something to do the popularity of Chinese restaurants skyrocketing after many Japanese restaurants were closed during World War II.
