There could be a different kind of bleeding, Bulak, if that is the case.

By the way, our sympathies to the victims of shark attack in Australia.

I think the surfers had already been forewarned of the danger. They risked too much.

It's really sad.

Charlton Heston, who won a best actor Oscar for his starring role in the epic Ben-Hur, has died aged 84, a spokesman for his family has said.

Heston died on Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills. His wife Lydia, whom he married in 1944, was at his side.

Heston also portrayed Michelangelo, El Cid and other heroic figures in movie epics of the 1950s and 1960s.

Heston was born John Charles Carter in Evanston, Illinois.

He studied acting before serving for three years in the US Air Force. But back in civilian life, Heston went through hard times, while waiting for his first break.

In 1952, after working on Broadway, Heston starred as the ringmaster in the movie The Greatest Show on Earth.

Four years later, he appeared as Moses in The Ten Commandments, one of the roles which would define his career.

After the success of the science fiction film Planet of the Apes in the late 1960s, Heston turned his attention to working in the theatre.

His former publicist Michael Levine, who worked with Heston for 20 years, told Associated Press the actor's passing represented the end of an iconic era for cinema.

"If Hollywood had a Mount Rushmore, Heston's face would be on it. He was a heroic figure that I don't think exists to the same degree in Hollywood today."

Since Hazel sent me a PM to notify me about this thread. Here are the countless weird things about me that some friends and strangers have hard time accepting me at first blink.

1. I don't talk unless I can improve the silence. - "Ba-bye na oi, wala na koy kaestorya." I heard it from NY.

2. I would pace the room for hours. When I am formulating ideas/concepts, I would walk around the room until my legs hurt. Words from my Davao officemates: "Weird lagi ka, Mike, sige ra ko ug lakaw-lakaw."

3. I fear everything that is related to driving a car, but not motorcycle, helicopter, airplane, kariton.

4. I can talk to you while I am sleeping.

5. I walk while sleeping and I sleep while walking. "Ask my sister and my mother."

... to be continued...

Kiamz,

Thanks for the update. Hope you'd let us know of the result of the paraffin test. I have a strong feeling that this is the man who killed the nursing student.
#13177
By Cebu Sun Star and GMA News

A robber shot and killed past midnight yesterday a nursing student just three weeks shy of her graduation.

Ruby Jade Magpatoc Ruba, 20, was attacked along Gov. Roa St. in Barangay Capitol, Cebu City. At the time of the attack, she was working on a case study she had to finish in order to graduate.

Ruba, 20, hailed from Macrohon, Southern Leyte and temporarily lived in an apartment on B. Rodriguez St., Cebu City.

She was scheduled to graduate from the Cebu Doctors’ University on March 30, Ruby’s brother Richie told reporters.

Ruby, daughter of Vicente Ruba of the Philippine Coast Guard Headquarters District Central 7, was the only girl of three siblings.

Homicide investigators led by SPO1 Jay Yballe learned that Ruby, together with a female friend, was heading toward a dormitory on Gov. Roa St. (formerly Kamuning St.), Capitol Site to pick up the adaptor of a laptop they borrowed from a classmate.

Ruby was working on her case study, a graduation requirement.

When Ruby and her friend were near the dormitory, she sent a text message to inform her classmate that they had arrived.

At that point, a man appeared and pointed a gun at the two women. Scared, the two ran in different directions.

Ruby’s friend told Yballe that a single gunshot was the next thing she heard. She saw her friend slumped on the dormitory’s ramp.

Dreams lost

The friend and the dormitory’s security guard rushed her to the Cebu Doctors’ Hospital, a few blocks away, but she died minutes later.

A pouch where Ruby kept her Nokia cellular phone, a model worth about P5,000, was already gone.

The armed robber reportedly fled on a red motorcycle driven by a cohort.

Ruby’s brother, Richie, said that based on the autopsy performed by Dr. Benjamin Lara, PNP 7 medico-legal officer, the slug hit his sister’s left side and tore out through her chest, before hitting the side of her left wrist.

It pierced her lungs, liver, heart and stomach.

He appealed to the police to identify and arrest the man who killed his sister.

Ruby, he said, was looking forward to their class prom next week and had already picked out her class ring.

Her body will be brought back to the family’s hometown in Southern Leyte tonight.

Whether or not there was a lapse in the police measures taken to secure the site where Ruba was shot is a matter the mayor and local police officers still have to discuss.

European Union External Relations Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner raised the threat of a boycott of the Beijing Olympics Games over Tibet in an interview with a German weekly to appear Sunday.

But in Tokyo, Japan's Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda on Saturday voiced concern about using the Beijing Olympics to protest against China's suppression of recent unrest in Tibet, local media reported.

"We have to consider if we should make a vociferous criticism and if it's appropriate to link (the Tibet issue) to the Olympics right now," Fukuda told Jiji Press and other Japanese media.

Japan, which has been repairing uneasy relations with China, has expressed concern about Tibet but said it would not support a boycott at the Games in the Chinese capital in August.

The unrest came ahead of a planned visit by Chinese President Hu Jintao to Japan possibly in May to hold a summit with Fukuda, known for his Asian-friendly diplomacy.
China is trying to put down the biggest protests in nearly two decades against its rule of Tibet.

Ferrero-Waldner called on European companies that operate in China to demand respect for human rights and for peaceful demonstrations worldwide on the issue in the interview with Bild am Sonntag.

By Tetch Torres
Philippine Daily Inquirer

A total of 1,289 have passed the 2007 bar examinations, the Supreme Court announced on Saturday afternoon, making for a 22.91 percent passing rate as 5,626 law graduates from 109 law schools took the bar examinations September last year.

Ateneo de Manila University law graduate Mercedita L. Ona topped the tests with an average score of 83.55 percent. Jennifer Ong of the University of the Philippines in Diliman followed at 83.35 percent.

The 22.91-percent passing rate for the 2007 bar would have been much lower, perhaps an all-time low of 5 percent, had the passing rate not been adjusted from the traditional 75 percent to 70 percent.

"Due to unusually strict corrections, it was decided to lower the passing grade to 70 percent," Associate Justice Adolf Azcuna said in a press conference.

Azcuna, chairman of the 2007 Bar Committee, said the committee had to adjust the passing grade from 75 to 70 percent on three subjects -- Civil Law, Criminal Law, and Social Legislation -- otherwise only five percent of 5,626 examinees will have made it.

He added that the committee also decided to lower the disqualification rate on Labor and Civil Law from 50 to 45 percent.

The Supreme Court associate justice said the passing grade was lowered before but it was not clearly known what prompted it then.

Under the Rules of Court, a bar examinee is deemed to have passed if he obtains a general average of 75 percent in all subjects without falling below 50 percent in any subject.

The subjects and their corresponding weights are as follows: Remedial Law, 20 percent; Political and International Law, 15 percent; Mercantile Law, 15 percent; Civil Law, 15 percent; Labor and Social Legislation, 10 percent; Taxation, 10 percent; Criminal Law, 10 percent; and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises, 5 percent.

Azcuna also said Associate Justices Consuelo Ynares-Santiago, Conchita Carpio-Morales, and Presbiterio Velasco inhibited themselves during the deliberations prior to the announcement of the results.

Oathtaking of the successful candidates will be on April 29 at the Philippine International Convention Center.

Associate Justice Dante Tinga will head the next bar examination committee.

The number of examinees last year is smaller than the 6,345 who took the tests in 2006.

Since 2000, the highest percentage of bar passers was seen in 2001, where the passing rate was 32.89 percent. This corresponded to 1,266 passers out of 3,849 examinees.

But the biggest number of actual passers since 2000 was recorded in 2006, when 1,893 out of 6,187 passed, or 30.60 percent of the total.

Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, "God, I thank You that I am not like other men - extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess."

And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, "God, be merciful to me a sinner!"

(Jesus said:) I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

from the Gospel of Jesus Christ:

The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: "God, I thank you that I am not like other men - robbers, evildoers, adulterers - or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get."

But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, "God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

(Jesus said:) I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Senators should also ask themselves what they have done to our country. A country's misfortune cannot be blamed on one person alone. Everyone must be part of nation-building and everyone must be willing to take blame when bad times arise. Senators, reality check please.

Julio Diaz has a daily routine. Every night, the 31-year-old social worker ends his hour-long subway commute to the Bronx one stop early, just so he can eat at his favorite diner.

But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn.

He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife.

"He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, 'Here you go,'" Diaz says.

As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, "Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you're going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm."

The would-be robber looked at his would-be victim, "like what's going on here?" Diaz says. "He asked me, 'Why are you doing this?'"

Diaz replied: "If you're willing to risk your freedom for a few dollars, then I guess you must really need the money. I mean, all I wanted to do was get dinner and if you really want to join me ... hey, you're more than welcome.

"You know, I just felt maybe he really needs help," Diaz says.

Diaz says he and the teen went into the diner and sat in a booth.

"The manager comes by, the dishwashers come by, the waiters come by to say hi," Diaz says. "The kid was like, 'You know everybody here. Do you own this place?'"

"No, I just eat here a lot," Diaz says he told the teen. "He says, 'But you're even nice to the dishwasher.'"

Diaz replied, "Well, haven't you been taught you should be nice to everybody?"

"Yea, but I didn't think people actually behaved that way," the teen said.

Diaz asked him what he wanted out of life. "He just had almost a sad face," Diaz says.

The teen couldn't answer Diaz â€" or he didn't want to.

When the bill arrived, Diaz told the teen, "Look, I guess you're going to have to pay for this bill 'cause you have my money and I can't pay for this. So if you give me my wallet back, I'll gladly treat you."

The teen "didn't even think about it" and returned the wallet, Diaz says. "I gave him $20 ... I figure maybe it'll help him. I don't know."

Diaz says he asked for something in return â€" the teen's knife â€" "and he gave it to me."

Afterward, when Diaz told his mother what happened, she said, "You're the type of kid that if someone asked you for the time, you gave them your watch."

"I figure, you know, if you treat people right, you can only hope that they treat you right. It's as simple as it gets in this complicated world."

A Beijing court has rejected the claim of a Chinese man and his grandson for reputation damage in consuming a KFC "teadog set meal", the local media reported on Thursday.

Tongzhou District court ruled on Tuesday that the two plaintiffs surnamed Jin would not get compensation from the KFC fast-food chain as they couldn't provide substantive evidence to prove the set meal had led to a "lower social evaluation" and reputation damage to them, as they claimed.

According to The Beijing News, the Jins bought a "teadog set meal" in a KFC store in the capital's east Tongzhou District on Dec. 15. The two had found an advert in the shop promoting the set meal, which the elder Jin thought meant man and dog sharing the meal.

He then sued KFC for insulting consumers, because "according to the advertisement, my grandson has eaten dog food and we two have become 'dog friends'", -- a term that means "a dissolute company" in Chinese.

Representatives for KFC, however, said the set meal was so named because consumers could get a calendar featuring teadogs, a Japanese cartoon image, if they paid extra money through a promotion.

A Texas woman who claims she was forced to remove a nipple ring with pliers in order to board an airplane called Thursday for an apology by federal security agents and a civil rights investigation.

"I wouldn't wish this experience upon anyone," Mandi Hamlin, 37, said at a news conference in Los Angeles. "My experience with TSA was a nightmare I had to endure. No one deserves to be treated this way."

Hamlin said she was trying to board a flight from Lubbock to Dallas on Feb. 24 when she was scanned by a Transportation Security Administration agent after passing through a larger metal detector without problems.

The female TSA agent used a handheld detector that beeped when it passed in front of Hamlin's chest, the Dallas-area resident said.

Hamlin said she told the woman that she was wearing nipple piercings. The female agent then called over her male colleagues, one of whom said she would have to remove the body piercings, Hamlin claimed.

Hamlin said she could not remove them and asked if she could instead display her pierced breasts in private to the female agent. But several other male officers told her she could not board her flight until the jewelry was removed, she said.
