BARI, Italy, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- An Italian cleaning firm said its insurance will cover the loss of contemporary artworks mistakenly taken for trash and tossed out at a gallery.

Lorenzo Roca of cleaning firm Chiarissima said an employee was "just doing her job" when she mistook Sala Murat's artwork made from newspaper, cardboard and cookie pieces for trash left behind by workers setting up the Mediating Landscape exhibition at the gallery in Bari, the BBC reported Friday.

Roca said the company's insurance will cover the estimated $13,722 value of the lost art.

Security workers arriving for duty Wednesday morning noticed the works were missing.

"We are obviously very sorry for what happened," city marketing commissioner Antonio Maria Vasile said. "It's clear the cleaning person did not realize she had thrown away two works and their value. But this is all about the artists who have been able to better interpret the meaning of contemporary art, which is to interact with the environment.

"In any case, the insurance will cover the damages caused," Vasile said.

The ultimate goal is to allow the children in calamity areas to creatively release their trauma as a starting point for teachers and the communities to get to the children and then motivate them to express, Save the Children representatives said.

Save the Children is one of the many international organizations handling the post trauma stress therapies of calamity victims, the organization focusing on children in internally displace communities and their issues.

Arts Month keynote speaker City Mayor John Geesnell Yap also pointed out that the Arts Month belongs to the Hearts Month.

Heart, Joy, Love----the main elements in the Arts Programs for 2014 Philippine Arts Festival (PAF) for the February Arts Month Celebration, will be the workshop’s underlying theme, local artist and literary arts mentor said.

Moreover, after the workshops, Bohol intends to bring in Tanghal Asia here, and set up an International Arts for Healing Festival anytime soon. (RAC)

Adopting Kasing Sining, art on the edge, art with a heart, the workshops are arts for Healing disaster-Impacted communities of Maribojoc and Antequera and Loon this next week.

Using the arts, it aims to restoring the wholeness, life, hope, shelter, community and heritage of people through a movement of culture caregivers and artists for crisis, explains Lutgardo Labad, during a meeting with workshop coordinators and facilitators at Garden Café, a week ago.

The workshop is a continuing activity of the Dayaw Bohol, and One Heart Express, which uses the Basic Integrated Theater Arts Workshop template to help upgrade the pedagogy experience of local artist teachers, multi-awarded cultural worker Labad added.

Both programs had arts for healing workshops given to disaster hit communities, take its roots from indigenous cultures as well as community experience.

The workshop is aimed at equipping public school teachers with another tool to get into the sensitivities of children in calamity areas to process and provide mental health and psycho-social support using arts as the medium.

Arts Month celebration here opened in style; a simple and austere ceremony, hides what could be Bohol’s innovative contribution to disaster struck communities.

Just as Sangguniang Panlalawigan Bohol Culture and Arts Committee Chair Godofreda Tirol, declared the Arts Month open, somewhere in the sidelines, Boholano artists huddle to finalize a training module which could make Bohol carve another first in Philippine Arts history.

The day the Board Member Tirol declared the celebration open was also the day when a team of local artists visit the venue for the next day’s integrated arts workshop for public school teachers of severely affected towns here.

The goal is to enhance the teaching skills of teachers who would be equipped with special skills in arts for healing therapies, so they can properly process problems of school children which could be disaster trauma related, according to program initiators in Bohol.

It would be easier to dismiss medal-counting as mere competitive fun if countries didn’t treat it like a real measurement of national worthâ€"and spend accordingly. After it failed to win gold at its home Olympics in Montreal '76 and Calgary '88, Canada invested $110 million in its “Own the Podium” program in the lead-up to the 2010 Vancouver games. Ahead of London 2012, Great Britain spent 264 million pounds preparing its athletes. Russia hasn't revealed how much it spent on training athletes before Sochi, but given the games’ $51 billion pricetag, it’s safe to assume they spared no expense. In each case, Olympic investment has resulted in noticeably increased medal totals, but it’s tempting to think about what else could have been done with that money.

Performing well on a global stage like the Olympics can be a potent symbol, especially for the host country, but it is still only a symbolâ€"and a fleeting one at that. (Do you even remember who "won" the games in Turin?) Ultimately, our outsize investment in the gamesâ€"both emotionally and financiallyâ€"says more about America's priorities than it does about our athletic abilities or national strength. There's a different kind of gold medal, for instance, that an American hasn’t won since 1993: The Nobel Prize for Literature. But I haven't heard anyone suggest we fund a multi-million-dollar “Own the Pen” initiative.
#13047
Perhaps that’s because the games inevitably breed suspicion, envy, and even anger. In a Gallup poll taken just as the Sochi games began, Americans’s favorability rating of Russia fell to its lowest level in 15 years. Surely, Russia's hospitality toward Edward Snowden and support for the Syrian regime played into thatâ€"but just as surely, so did our Olympic competitiveness with the host nation. Then came the U.S.-Russia hockey game on Saturday, in which a Russian go-ahead goal with five minutes remaining was disallowed by the American referee. The U.S. went on to win in a shootout, and prominent Russians reacted with vitriol, even accusing NBC of buying a favorable ruling. It’s safe to say U.S.-Russia relations won’t be thawing anytime soon.

What's more, the medal count explicitly violates the IOC’s own rules. The Olympic charter explicitly states that “The IOC and the [Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games] shall not draw up any global ranking per country, instead honoring individual medal winners." After all, as the Charter makes clear, “the Olympic Games are competitions between athletes in individual or team events and not between countries.” Despite this, the official Sochi 2014 website prominently features a medal count, as did the websites for London, Vancouver, Beijing, and Turin. (By the way, is there anything sadder than an eight-year-old Olympic homepage?)
#13048
Such naked nationalism is all the more glaring given why the Olympics were conceived in the first place. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the French founder of the modern games, didn’t just want to promote physical education worldwide. Based on a romanticized reading of the truces and camaraderie surrounding the ancient Greek Olympic games, he was convinced that different nations competing alongside each other would lead inexorably to world peace and mutual understanding. “The important thing at the Olympic Games is not to win, but to take part,” said de Coubertin, “for the essential thing in life is not to conquer, but to struggle well.”

The history of the Olympics has been one long story of our inability to live up to that ideal. The most famous games are remembered not for athletic feats but for political symbolism: the 1936 Nazi Games in Berlin, the 1972 Munich Massacre, the "black power" salute in Mexico in 1968, and the consecutive boycotts of Moscow in 1980 and Los Angeles in 1984. Founded in the shadow of the Franco-Prussian war (the Germans almost boycotted the inaugural games in 1896), the Olympics have endured two world wars and served as one of the most prominent battlefields of the Cold War. It didn't trigger any conflicts, but it certainly hasn’t stopped them.

Olympic Games / SOCHI 2014: Stop Counting Olympic Medals!

Stop Counting Olympic Medals!
Our national worth should not be measured in gold, silver, and bronze
http://www.newrepublic.com/
BY CARLO DAVIS
FEBRUARY 19, 2014

With the Sochi games nearing the homestretch, the focus has turned to that most irresistible of Olympic events: watching the medal count. Many publications keep a running tally, and some even investigate why big countries like the United States and Russia haven’t won more, or argue that, adjusted for population and GDP, smaller nations like Norway and Belarus are really the medal leaders. The order of the medal table may be up for debateâ€"Drudge has made it clear he judges by gold aloneâ€"but the concept of the medal table itself has gone conspicuously unquestioned. That’s unfortunate, because our obsession with the medal count has become a symbol of everything that is wrong with the Olympics today.

As economists Kevin Grier and Tyler Cowen noted during the London Games, medals typically go to countries that are rich, populous, and invest significant sums in their Olympic training program (though focusing on specific sportsâ€"like the Netherlands do in speed skatingâ€"can give smaller nations a comparative advantage). For the U.S., the all-time leader in both Olympic golds and total medals, the games are a biennial ego boost at a time when America consistently lags behind the rest of the developed world in several more important metrics. We may not be first in income equality, health care, or math, reading and science scores, but we can still bring home the gold.

And you thought Pizza Hut couldn't get any more questionable. One of the chain's West Virginia outposts was shut down recently after surveillance camera footage showed a district manager peeing into a dishroom sink.

Although the incident happened after business hours (and at least he wasn't peeing into the pizza), authorities generally view relieving oneself in the area where things get sanitized as a violation of health code. A sign on the door of the shuttered restaurant says that it was temporarily closed because of "conditions within the establishment constituting a substantial hazard to the public health," and it could be days or even weeks before the restaurant reopens. In the meantime, the restaurant's fans will just have to settle for real food instead.

The company has plenty of critics, some of whom claim its machines aren’t quantum computers at all. And yet, the technology could herald radical changes for the following areas, to name a few:

1. Safer airplanesâ€"Lockheed Martin plans to use its D-Wave to test jet software that is currently too complex for classical computers.

2. Discover distant planetsâ€"Quantum computers will be able to analyze the vast amount of data collected by telescopes and seek out Earth-like planets.

3. Win electionsâ€"Campaigners will comb through reams of marketing information to best exploit individual voter preferences.

4. Boost GDPâ€"Hyper-personalized advertising, based on quantum computation, will stimulate consumer spending.

5. Detect cancer earlierâ€"Computational models will help determine how diseases develop.

6. Help automobiles drive themselvesâ€"Google is using a quantum computer to design software that can distinguish cars from landmarks.

7. Reduce weather-related deathsâ€"Precision forecasting will give people more time to take cover.

8. Cut back on travel timeâ€"Sophisticated analysis of traffic patterns in the air and on the ground will forestall bottlenecks and snarls.

9. Develop more effective drugsâ€"By mapping amino acids, for example, or analyzing DNA-sequencing data, doctors will discover and design superior drug-based treatments.

D-Wave

Computers built on the principles of quantum physicsâ€"as opposed to ‘classical’ physicsâ€"promise a revolution on the order of the invention of the microprocessor or the splitting of the atom. D-Wave, a small Canadian company backed by Jeff Bezos, NASA, and the CIA among others, is the first firm to sell a so-called quantum computerâ€"at roughly $10 million a pop. The vast increase in power could revolutionize fields as disparate as medicine, space exploration, and artificial intelligence.

Women took to the streets wearing panties on their heads Sunday as they protested new laws banning lace underwear in Kazakhstan.

The legislation - which includes provisions covering the required level of moisture absorbtion in the garments - will come into force this summer in Kazakhstan as well as Russia and Belarus, according to the Moscow Times.

This sparked the so-called "Panties for the President" demonstrations in the Kazakh city of Almaty on Sunday.

"It irritates me the most that the authorities want to decide what I should wear," Iryna Davydenko, a bank manager who travels regularly between Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine, told Al Arabiya English. "As if all other issues in the country are solved and the only outstanding issue is ladies' panties."

Kazakh journalist Dina Baidildayeva tweeted a picture of the demonstrations and said two women had been arrested. Al Arabiya later reported this figure had risen to three. The arrests could not be independently confirmed by NBC News.

The law was passed in 2012 by the Customs Union between Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus. This trade allegiance was criticized in 2012 by the then secretary of state Hillary Clinton, who said it was an attempt to "re-Sovietize the region."

Lace underwear does not meet a 6 percent threshold for moisture absorption required by the new law, with the synthetic material reportedly reaching only 3 to 3.6 percent. It will come into force on July 1, the Moscow Times reported.

The newspaper said many women had vowed to stockpile the garments before the ban is introduced.

Although elephants have been known to help others or to display empathy in the wild, the authors said that evidence has only been anecdotal up until now.

The elephants observed were all between 3 and 60 years old, and adult male elephants were excluded from the sample. In the wild, elephant family groups consist of related adult females and their immature offspring. Male elephants leave their family groups when they reach sexual maturity and either roam solo or form small bachelor herds.

Researchers observed the elephants at regular periods from April 2008 to February 2009.

"With their strong social bonds, it's not surprising that elephants show concern for others," said co-author Frans de Waal, a professor of primate behaviour at Emory University in Atlanta.

"Elephants get distressed when they see others in distress, reaching out to calm them down, not unlike the way chimpanzees or humans embrace someone who is upset," de Waal said.

The events that upset the study's pachyderms included dogs walking past, snakes or other animals rustling in the grass, or the presence of an unfriendly elephant.

"When an elephant gets spooked, its ears go out, its tail stands erect or curls out, and it may emit a low-frequency rumble, trumpet or roar," Plotnik said. "The consistency with which elephants responded to a friend in distress was quite remarkable. Rarely did an elephant give a distress call without a response from a friend or group member nearby."

"Elephants do a lot of touching of others with their trunks. Genital touching is a way for elephants to identify others, and in this case, it may also be a way for the elephants to identify the behavioural state of the others," said co-author Joshua Plotnik, a lecturer in conservation biology at Mahidol University in Thailand and chief executive of the nonprofit Think Elephants International.

"I think the genital touching, in combination with other touches, specifically in this context, serves to reassure the other elephant," Plotnik said. "We also see the elephants put their trunks into each others' mouths, which seems to be a way of saying, 'I'm here to help you."'

Consoling behaviours are rare in the animal kingdom. Humans, great apes, dogs and some birds are known to attend to peers in distress, scientists say.

When life gets stressful, Asian elephants help each other feel better by trumpeting sympathetic noises and using their trunks to touch their friend's - um - private parts, according to new research.

In a study published on Tuesday in the journal PeerJ, animal behaviourists observed 26 captive elephants in a sanctuary in northern Thailand. The researchers said they recorded a number of elephant behaviours that they concluded were specifically intended to comfort distressed herd members.

The behaviours included touching the distressed elephant's genitals with their trunks, putting their trunks in the distressed elephant's mouth, or making a high-pitched "chirping" noise.
