MANILA, Philippines - The price of bread will increase by the middle of this month even as the Trade secretary revealed that China has turned down a Philippine request to import wheat, the primary material for bread.



The announcement of the price increase was Wednesday made by an official of a bakers' group who said that most of their members will increase the prices of their products on April 15, Mark Salazar said in a GMA News' 24 Oras report.

“Yun tatlong asosasyon ng maliit na bakery ay magtataas na raw ng presyo sa April 15. Kaming mga nasa Philbaking, yung mga commercial bakers, malalaking kumpanya malamang gagawin naman ang pagtaas ng presyo sa katapusan ng buwan o kaya sa umpisa ng Mayo," said Simplicio Umali, president of Philippine Baking Industry group.

The news came as prices for rice, the staple food of Filipinos, rose the past days.

The baker’s association faulted the increasing cost of raw materials such as imported wheat as the reason for the third price hike this year.

A sack of imported wheat which could be bought previously at P950 now costs over P1,000.

Meanwhile, the cost of wheat coming from the US is expected to increase by 100 percent.

If this happens, the report said an ordinary-sized pandesal could cost P3.50 a piece in the coming days.

“We know its forthcoming several months ago… as early last year. Sinabi na namin sa DTI we have to raise prices because the raw material cost is going up and we cannot stop it…nobody can," said Ric Pinca, president of the Philippine Association of Flour Millers.

For his part, a government official said that he tried to source cheaper wheat from another country but his request was turned down.

Department of Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila said that China has rejected his request for the Philippines to import 150,000 metric tons of wheat a year. China has the cheapest price of wheat in the world.

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine government has reportedly decided to lift the ban in the deployment of domestic helpers to Jordan on condition that work contracts would have to be approved by the embassy and the Filipinos would receive a minimum monthly salary of $400.

Amjad Weshah, director of recruitment of the Jordan labor ministry, made the announcement in Jordan on Sunday, according to a report in The Jordan Times.

The Jordanian official said he learned about the Philippine government’s decision from Ambassador Julius Torres when they met on Wednesday at the embassy.

But acting Labor Secretary Marianito Roque denied the report.

“I have not signed any decision yet to lift it," Roque said in a telephone interview Monday.

Besides, he said removing the deployment ban to Jordan “is not even in the agenda with POEA" (Philippine Overseas Employment Administration).

Claro Cristobal, spokesman of the Department of Foreign Affairs, said it is establishing contact with the Philippine embassy in Jordan to confirm it.

Last January 21, the Philippine government imposed an indefinite ban in the deployment of new workers to Jordan after about 120 to 150 OFWs, mostly household helpers, sought refuge at the embassy when they fled from their employers because of alleged abuses, including rape and non-payment of wages.

The deployment ban only covers the new hires, and not returning workers who don’t have problems with their employers.

In 1990, the Philippines also imposed a deployment ban to Jordan due to high cases of maltreatment and exploitation committed by Jordanian employers.

However, in 2005, the labor department ordered the lifting of the ban with the opening of a Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Amman and the implementation of a “special work contract" which provides liberal welfare provisions to foreign household service workers.

Jordanian officials have consistently denied claims of abuse of Filipino workers. "The issue had nothing do with abuse claims. It was about a number of domestic helpers, who had problems related to their residency, and we tried to help them return to their country," according to Weshah.

Through the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, the government raised in December 2006 the minimum salary of domestic helpers, or household service workers, to $400, from $200, and required language proficiency and skills training and assessment on workers prior to deployment.

The Jordanian labor official said 45 Filipino domestic helpers had since been sent back to the Philippines after settling their financial claims from their employers.

According to the report, a joint committee formed to identify and solve the problems on the recruitment of the Filipinos to Jordan had addressed most of the workers’ grievances, which were primarily against their employers for delayed or non-payment of salaries, accumulated work permits and residency fines.

The Jordan interior ministry had exempted at least 140 Filipinos from the payment of fines, and 75 of this batch have returned to work, and 60 are set for repatriation to the Philippines, the report said.

The number of Filipino domestic helpers in Jordan has been estimated at 15, 000. -

This is how the returning actor Gabby Concepcion said his apology to his supposed partner Jolina Magdangal in the movie I.T.A.L.Y., to which he backed out because he did not like the script.

In a taped interview with Showbiz Central aired yesterday, April 6, Gabby reiterated his reason for not doing the movie anymore despite a signed contract with GMA Films.

He explained, "Hindi ko naman intensiyon 'yon. Pero lahat ng mga kapwa ko artista, gusto ko sanang makasama sa show business. Pero nagkakataon talaga na ang script ay pinagkakasunduan din ng artista bago nila gawin.

"At nagkataon din na ako'y nawala ng 13 years at nang binasa ko yung script, hindi talaga nagtutugma sa gusto kong gawin. Hindi mo naman mapapatrabaho ang isang taga-pelikula kung ayaw nilang magtrabaho dahil kumportable sa maraming bagay."

However, Gabby clarified that his decision to back out from doing I.T.A.L.Y. does not mean that he is closing his doors with GMA Films.

The former matinee idol said, "Hindi ko naman tinatanggihan ang GMA [Films]. Ang pinag-uusapan kasi natin dito kasi ay yung project [the movie I.T.A.L.Y.].

OPEN COMMUNICATION. In a separate interview, GMA Films president Annette Gozon-Abrogar admitted that GMA Films is in constant communication with Gabby, who is willing to settle the issue.

She related, "Actually, nagkausap lang kami about an hour ago. Lines have been open. Okay naman yung pag-uusap namin ni Gabby. He really wants to iron things out. He really wants to find a solution to all of these kaya nga nag-set na kami ng date."

Then, she mentioned about the possible causes that led Gabby to discontinue doing his supposed comeback movie with GMA Films.

"I can't speak for him, but I think there was a difference in the opinion as to his role in the movie [I.T.A.L.Y.]. So I think, mayroon siyang mga hindi nagustuhan doon sa role niya or he thinks that the movie is not the right vehicle for him for his comeback," said Ms. Annette.

After that, GMA Films president described what they planned for the said movie. "First, this movie is very big. Ang taas ng budget nito. This will be shot across three continents, hindi lang ito sa Europe. Mayroon pa siyempre sa Asia, may Europe leg, mayroon pa sa Africa. It will be shot on board, one of the best luxury liners in the world."

JOLINA'S REACTION. Initially, Jolina could not express her true feelings about Gabby's decision. In her previous interviews, she gave nothing but vague description of what she really felt when she found out that the returning actor has backed out on their supposed movie.

In fact, in one interview, she said, "Parang ayoko munang isipin, sa movie muna. ‘Pag inisip ko, baka magalit lang ako, e, ayoko ng negative." However, when Showbiz Central caught up with Jolina before she left for Europe last April 1, the young actress was in a light mood already.

Trying to stay away from the issue, Jolina told Showbiz Central, "Kung ano talaga yung rason niya dahil doon sa pag-backout or dahil doon sa usapan nila sa GMA Films, parang hindi ko na alam kung ano talaga, e, kasi mayroon din naman silang communication na sila lang. I think, it's between Gabby ang GMA Films."

In her following statements, Jolina seemed to have accepted the decision of Gabby. In fact, she even said that she is happy for both of them.

"After ko siyang makita, makita sa airport, mukha siyang...willing siya at saka mukha naman siyang masaya. Kasi kahit papaano naman, alam mo yun, naging friends naman kami. So, bago man lang ako umalis, para sa akin, happy ako para sa aming dalawa.

"Happy ako para sa aming dalawa. Kasi una, happy ako for him dahil yung comeback na gusto niya nagawa niya at saka, yun, makikita na niya yung family niya. And happy rin naman ako sa akin dahil tuloy yung movie, 'tapos ang saya-saya ng mga kasama ko, di ba?" said Jolina.

In the end, the Pinoy Idol judge added another factor that makes her ecstatic in doing this movieâ€"her boyfriend Bebong Muñoz, who will follow her in Italy.

"Masaya ako kasi parang at least kasama ko siya sa isang romantic na lugar, come on. So, happy ako talaga sa mangyayari ngayon," Jolina said in closing. - Philippine Entertainment Portal
