(BANAT NEWS)

COMMUNIST PARTY CHAIRMAN. Military officials describe Benito Tiamzon, 63, (above, right) as the “center of gravity” of the Maoist insurgency in the country. 45 years

Government and military officials have been describing Tiamzon as the hardliner vis-a-vis peace talks with the Aquino government. Alex Padilla, government's chief peace negotiator, told Rappler last year that while Sison seemed open to resuming peace talks with the administration, Tiamzon had imposed difficult preconditions for the talks. (READ: Joma wants peace, the ground doesn't)

A veteran intelligence officer however said Tiamzon himself was subjected to disciplinary action over reported problems caused by the underground movement's decision to support the candidacy of businessman Manny Villar in the 2010 presidential race. But party insiders dispute this.

Whatever it is, the guerrilla army that Tiamzon once led is celebrating its 45th anniversary a week from now, on March 29 â€" proof of its tenacity and the persistence of conditions that had driven young men like him to rebel 4 decades ago. â€" Rappler.com

In 1976, the CPP through Sison issued a crucial organizational document that set the orientation for countryside work. Many believe that Tiamzon wrote the bulk of that party document, after he studied and summed up the various organizational experiences of guerrilla bases from Isabela to Davao. He used his vast experience in Samar â€" and the rebels' success there â€" to emphasize "painstaking organizational work," recalled the former CPP cadre.

Another former CPP cadre recalled: "That was his strength…he was able to explain with clarity the various organizational challenges facing the party. In meetings, he would summarize conflicting positions and ideas. He was good at that."

In 1985, nearly a decade after the release of the party document that he helped author, the CPP suffered its worst political debacle: it decided to boycott the February 1986 snap elections called by Marcos. The elections, which Marcos won officially, triggered massive protests that led to the EDSA revolution that brought him down and catapulted Corazon Aquino to the presidency. The CPP was left sitting on the fence.

The CPP chairman then, Rodolfo Salas, took the flak for that "strategic blunder," as insiders would call it. He resigned.

Tiamzon was ripe for the position of chairman, which he would hold in an acting capacity and in between transitions. He was formally elected CPP chairman during a plenum sometime between 2004 and 2008, according to intelligence reports.

Samar experience

He first showed his organizational muscle when he was assigned in the Samar provinces in the 1970s to provide "political direction" to the NPA there, according to the former CPP cadre we interviewed.

In fact, sources told Rappler that the Tiamzon couple became vulnerable to surveillance right after Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) struck the Samar-Leyte area in November 2013. They were spotted in and out of the area, according to sources.

The region became an NPA stronghold in the Marcos years due to poverty and the tactical skills of two rebel commanders during this period: Pedro Calubid and Arturo Tabara (Tabara was assassinated by the NPA, a casualty of the split).

It was Benito Tiamzon who assisted Calubid and Tabara in Samar during those years, ensuring "political development" for party organs there, the former cadre added.

True, the communist underground is no longer as formidable as it had been at its peak in the 1980s (when it had about 20,000 armed members). Robert Delfin, a veteran intelligence agent who was behind the sensational arrests of senior rebel leaders in the 1980s and 1990s, said in a previous interview: “Ang NPA ay parang bolang kristal. Kapag nabasag, hindi mo na mabubuo." (The NPA is like a crystal ball. Once it is broken, you can no longer make it whole again).

But the communist underground has managed to bounce back in some regions, taunting authorities and regaining some political base. The military has also since taken back from the PNP the primary role of running after the guerrillas. And despite its measly number of about 3,000 armed members today, the communist movement continues to be a strategic security threat as far as the military is concerned.

Tiamzon played a key role in that rebuilding.

Party consolidation

He's more than that, however.

Now 63, Tiamzon is credited for consolidating the party after it suffered its biggest split in the early 1990s.

The split came about after CPP chairman-in- exile Jose Maria Sison initiated a rectification campaign that ordered cadres to return to the old principles of a protracted people's war, discouraged "adventurism" in the ranks, and slammed party leaders who wanted to fast-track the revolution by expanding in key cities and provinces. Sison's stern reminders came in the form of a 1992 party document titled, "Reaffirm Our Basic Principles and Rectify Errors."

A massive purge followed, splitting the communist movement into two major factions: the so-called "Reaffirmists," who heeded Sison's back-to-basics order, and the so-called "Rejectionists," who believed that the party needed to adapt to the changing times.

As rebel units disintegrated and the movement's minted names left the CPP, the Ramos administration then declared that the communist movement was in an "irreversible decline." The government was so convinced of this that at one point, it gave the Philippine National Police (PNP) the primary role of fighting the insurgents so that the military could focus on external defense.

Tiamzon stood by the party during this difficult period and pursued the rectification campaign, intelligence officers and former CPP cadres told Rappler. "He consolidated the party after the split. He should be credited for that," a former cadre said.

On Saturday, March 22, military and police units captured him, his wife Wima and 5 others in Barangay Zaragosa, Aloguinsan, Cebu.

This is not his first arrest.

Tiamzon was arrested and detained in Fort Bonifacio following the 1972 declaration of martial law by then president Ferdinand Marcos. After his escape, he remained an elusive catch who carried the aliases "Celo" and "Sencio," according to a veteran intelligence officer who thrice attempted to arrest Tiamzon and failed each time.

The former CPP cadre we interviewed said Tiamzon has one distinguishing mark: he has 6 toes in one foot.

The military said that at the time of his arrest on March 22, Tiamzon was the chairman of the CPP and its armed wing, the New People's Army (NPA), while his wife was the secretary-general.

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) â€" When he studied at the University of the Philippines in 1968, Benito Tiamzon fell in love not with communism but with writing.

He wrote for the Philippine Collegian, the official student newspaper of UP Diliman, and would hang out with campus writers, recalled a former senior cadre of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) who knows Tiamzon from those years. Tiamzon eventually joined a militant student movement, the Samahang Demokratiko ng Kabataan (SDK) which, along with the Kabataang Makabayan (KM), would form the backbone of the national democratic movement during the Marcos years.

Tiamzon started party work by organizing labor unions in Metro Manila under the CPP's Metro Manila-Rizal Regional Party Committee, according to various intelligence reports on him. He organized Marikina's market vendors and shoemakers, for example, as well as workers in Caloocan.

Tiamzon has come a long way since.

(Update 10:01 p.m.) Authorities arrested two leaders of the Communist Party-New People's Army-National Democratic Front in Cebu on Saturday afternoon.

According to a GMA News flash report, Benito Tiamzon and his wife Wilma were arrested by Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police personnel in Barangay Zaragoza in Aloguinsan, Cebu.

"Wilma Tiamzon is the secretary general of the CPP/NPA while her husband, Benito, is the chairman of the CPP/NPA. They were arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest for their crimes against humanity that include murder, multiple murders, and frustrated murder," General Emmanuel Bautista, chief of staff of the AFP, said.

The Tiamzons, who follow a tradition in the CPP of husband and wife leadership teams, are said to have taken over the helm of the movement from Jose Ma. Sison, a long-time exile in the Netherlands.

Benito is included on the "Big Five" fugitive list alongside fellow NPA leader Jorge Madlos. His arrest follows the arrest of Delfin Lee, who was nabbed in connection with a multibillion-peso estafa case.

Last Wednesday, President Benigno Aquino III hinted another big-name fugitive would be arrested soon, but did not elaborate.

A Palace official, who refused to be identified, said Benito Tiamzon was the fugitive Aquino was referring to.

The arrest comes as the New People's Army prepares to mark its 45th anniversary on March 29. â€" with reports by Rie Takumi and Andrei Medina/VC/JDS/HS, GMA News

Johansson was placed under surveillance for more than a month after the police received a tip that young girls had been frequenting his house in Barangay Dumlog, Talisay, about 12 kilometers from Cebu City.

The police later learned that the foreigner would allegedly make the girls put on make-up, strip naked and pose before his camera.

Senior Inspector Michael Virtudazo, head of the police Anti-Cybercrime Group in Cebu, said they were still determining if the pictures were for Johansson’s personal use or would be sold online.

He said they were able to secure a search warrant from Judge Macaundas Hadjirasul of the Regional Trial Court Branch 8 in Cebu City.

Elements from the police’s Anti-Cybercrime Group in Cebu, Talisay City police, Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) and the Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force of Police Regional Office in Central Visayas raided the house of Johansson about 12:45 p.m. on Sunday.

Found inside the house were the two girls who were fully made up. They later told the police that the foreigner asked them to pose nude for a photo shoot.

Also found inside the house were an Asus laptop, a Toshiba laptop, a Seagate external hard drive, a Western digital hard drive, an external enclosure, a Smart broadband, and a Samsung brand mobile phone.

Several boxes of China-made performance enhancer capsules for men were also taken from Johansson’s possession. There were also bottles of beer scattered in the living room.

TALISAY CITY, Philippines â€" A 60-year-old Swede tourist was arrested on Sunday after he was caught with two teenaged girls inside his house in Barangay (village) Dumlog here.

Kjell Christer Johansson was brought to the Talisay City police pending the filing of charges for violation of Republic Act (RA) 10364 or the Expanded Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012 before the prosecutor’s office.

The two girls â€" aged 14 and 15 â€" were turned over to the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD-7).

Johansson, who had been in and out of the country since 2007, denied the police’s allegation that he was planning to take naked photos of young girls inside his residence.

“I have never done that,” he said.

The tally of missing was likely to grow, Hots said. The rescue mission was to halt at dusk because of treacherous, quicksand-like conditions, and would resume at dawn on Monday, Hots said.

Some rescue workers had been mired in mud up to their armpits and had to be dragged to safety, authorities said.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee flew over the area on Sunday. He told the news conference, "I have a sense that we're going to have some hard news here."

The slide in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains along the Stillaguamish River piled mud, rock and debris up to 15 feet deep in some places.

It blocked the flow of the river, creating floods and a backup of water behind a natural dam of mud and debris, but the threat to people downriver had begun to ease, Inslee said.

The highway was closed in both directions, with no timeline for it to be reopened, he said.

The Snohomish County sheriff's office has asked people affected by the slide to report to the Red Cross so an accurate count can be made of the missing.

Washington state Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen on Saturday evening declared a state of emergency in Snohomish County.

(Reuters) - The death toll rose to eight and 18 people were missing on Sunday after a landslide in Washington state that buried homes and cars under mud and debris up to 15 feet deep, authorities said.

Eight people were also injured when rain-soaked embankments along State Route 530 near Oso, Washington, about 55 miles northeast of Seattle, gave way on Saturday morning and washed out at least six homes.

A spokesman for the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said a total of eight bodies had been found in the square mile (2.6 square km) of tangled debris, rocks, trees and mud by nightfall.

Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief Travis Hots told an earlier news conference, "We didn't find anybody alive. There was no sign of life" after a search of much of the area on foot.

Title sa song is Spolarium

If you wanna know what this song actually means, I could share it with you.

Professors here in the University of the Philippines know about it and they share it in class whenever the song comes in discussions. It is actually the story of the rape victim Pepsi Paloma who was allegedly raped by Vic Sotto, Joey De Leon, and Richie D’ Horsie.

She was made to drink too much by the three (this is described in the first 3 stanzas of the song) and when she was unconscious, they raped her. Pepsi died when she was about to cry out for justice. There were rumors that Pepsi did not commit suicide but she was killed to stop her from testifying in court.

So after knowing that, the song is pretty much direct except for some parts like “itigil muna ang pag-ikot ng mundo”. We can interpret this part differently. It can mean that the victim wanted her oppressors to stop their manipulations or she was just too tired of everything that’s happening that she wanted the world to just stop.

Pepsi was not able to receive justice. Until now, there is no closure to her case. And whether Vic and Joey were guilty, no one can prove it.

I assume Ely Buendia, who wrote the song, learned about Pepsi’s misery when he was still in the university. Maybe for him, even if Pepsi was not able to testify, the song would speak out the truth.

Makosinski is a big fan of F. Sionil José, a national artist for literature. She has read his short story “Puppy Love,” book of poetry “Questions” and some parts of the “Rosales” saga.

This tidbit should not come as a surprise since her Polish father, Art, made the film documentary “Francisco Sionil Joséâ€"A Filipino Odyssey.”

She says she and her father always take things apart and put them back together again. She shares her workspace with her father.

“There are multiple tools and equipment on it. [It has] a microscope, a couple of volt meters, an oscilloscope and a soldering iron,” Makosinski says. “I share my work bench with my dad. We also share boxes of screws and electronic components taken out of cell phones and old printers.”

That is apparently how a young inventor is raisedâ€"with access to tool boxes and transistors.
#12843
Makosinski says her flashlight can produce up to 5-foot “candles of brightness”â€"below the commercial standardâ€"but she says she is working to make the light brighter.

She says several companies have voiced interest in her flashlight. But she is adamant that until her flashlight achieves higher brightness at a lower cost, she will not agree to produce it for the public.

“Distribution of some of my flashlights to those who need it will be part of any agreement I’ll have with a company,” she says.

Makosinski is currently working on a new but related project of a reading light also powered by body heat. She plans to show it in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair this May.

Hopefully, this new project of hers would reach her friend in Mindanao. She has been to Manila, Camiguin and Bukidnon, and could not wait to go back to the country.

“I enjoyed the white sand beach in Camiguin. I observed the incredible nature and diversity in the Philippines,” she says when asked about what it is she remembers most about the country.

“[I also] visited a small school in a mountainous region of Mindanao and played with kids on the street in a village.”
#12844
Makosinski’s story has been shared several times in the social media and has caught the interest of several people, including American TV host Jimmy Fallon.

He was so impressed by her that when she guested in his “Tonight Show” recently, he said, “I’m going to work for her one day.”

Makosinski uses a thermoelectric device called “Peltier tiles” to power her flashlight. Peltier tiles produce electricity when one side is heated and the other side is cooled.

Her flashlight can be heated with the palm of the hand and is cooled by the surrounding air through the hollow tunnel of the device.

“You need 3 to 5 degrees Celsius temperature difference for the flashlight to work,” she says. “It is ideal for cold temperatures because the larger the temperature differential, the greater the light produced.”

A Filipino-Canadian teenager, Ann Makosinski, describes herself as an average student who likes science and fiction writer F. Sionil José. She is also working on making the world a better place.
The 16-year-old is the inventor of a flashlight powered solely by body heatâ€"absolutely no batteries are needed to make it work.

She says her project was inspired by a friend from Mindanao whose family could not afford to pay for electricity.

Without light at night, her friend could not study properly. She failed an entire school year because she could not read her lessons.

“I have not told her about my flashlight because it is not ready for use yet. It needs to be brighter and much cheaper to make,” the Canada-based Makosinski says in an e-mail interview with the Inquirer. “I want to give her and many other kids something that is useful and lasting. If it’s only half good, nobody will use it.”

The flashlight, however, was good enough for her to win the 2013 Google Science Fair in the 15-16 years old category.

When Delia was barely 13, her mother introduced her to talent manager Rey dela Cruz who changed her name to “Pepsi Paloma” to join his stable of other “soft drink” beauties which included Sarsi Emmanuel and Cola Nicolas. Dela Cruz secured Pepsi’s starring role in her first movie, a “bold” feature called Brown Emmanuelle in 1981.

Less than a year later, according to her account, while promoting one of her movies, Pepsi met the three comedian hosts of Eat Bulaga â€" Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon and Richie D’Horsey (Richie Reyes). The three men took her out to a bar, drugged her, and then gang raped her in a hotel room. (Because she was only 14 at the time, these comedians were pedophile rapists.)

A giraffe kissed a dying zoo worker goodbye in a heartbreaking moment that has gone viral.

Mario Eijs, 54, had spent 25 years cleaning the animal's enclosure and doing odd jobs at a Dutch zoo. His last wish was to be taken to the Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam, Netherlands, to pay a final visit to the co-workers and animals he loved.

The visit was organized by the Ambulance Wish Foundation, which offers free transport to terminally ill patients.

Eijs was wheeled around the zoo in his hospital bed and several giraffes became curious when he was brought to their inside enclosure.

''Mario got a lick on his nose after a lot of snuffles,'' Foundation worker Olaf Exoo said in a written summary of the day.

Exoo said it was ''a last greeting to each other that gave everybody watching goose bumps.''

In the report based on his “Human And Nature Dynamical” (Handy) model, the applied mathematician Safa Motesharri wrote: “the process of rise-and-collapse is actually a recurrent cycle found throughout history”.

His research, carried out with the help of a team of natural and social scientists and with funding from Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Center, has been accepted for publication in the Ecological Economics journal, the Guardian reported.

Motesharri explored the factors which could lead to the collapse of civilisation, from population growth to climate change, and found that when these converge they can cause society to break down because of the “stretching of resources” and “the economic stratification of society into ‘Elites’ and ‘Masses’”.

Using his Handy model to assess a scenario closely resembling the current state of the world, Motesharri found that civilisation “appears to be on a sustainable path for quite a long time, but even using an optimal depletion rate and starting with a very small number of Elites, the Elites eventually consume too much, resulting in a famine among the Masses that eventually causes the collapse of society”.

The report stressed, however, that the worst-case scenario of collapse is not inevitable, and called on action now from the so-called real world “Elites” to restore economic balance.

“Collapse can be avoided and population can reach equilibrium if the per capita rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a sustainable level, and if resources are distributed in a reasonably equitable fashion,” the scientists said.

This is not the first time scientists have tried to warn us of potentially impending global disaster. Last year it emerged that Stephen Hawking and a team of Britain's finest minds are drawing up a “doomsday list” of the catastrophic low-risk (but high-impact) events that could devastate the world.

‘Business as usual’ approach of economic elite will lead society to disaster, scientists warn

Modern civilisation is heading for collapse within a matter of decades because of growing economic instability and pressure on the planet’s resources, according to a scientific study funded by Nasa.

Using theoretical models to predict what will happen to the industrialised world over the course of the next century or so, mathematicians found that even with conservative estimates things started to go very badly, very quickly.

Referring to the past collapses of often very sophisticated civilisations â€" the Roman, Han and Gupta Empires for example â€" the study noted that the elite of society have often pushed for a “business as usual” approach to warnings of disaster until it is too late.

SALINAS, Calif. (AP) â€" Three starving children â€" including one who was chained to the floor to prevent her from getting food â€" were found last month in the squalid home of a Northern California couple, authorities said.

All three â€" two boys and a girl â€" were taken into protective custody, and one was hospitalized, Monterey County Sheriff Scott Miller said Friday.

Authorities discovered them in the Salinas, Calif., home on March 14 after two of the young people missed appointments, according to several published reports.

"It was a particularly heinous case," Miller told the Monterey Herald. The children had "hardly eaten for months."

The boys are 3 and 5 years old, and the girl is 8, authorities said, and they all exhibited bruises and signs of other physical as well as emotional abuse.

The girl, who appeared to have suffered the most extreme abuse, was chained to the floor to prevent her from getting any food, they said.

"It seems that the little girl was the major target of this abuse," Miller continued, adding that she looked "like a concentration camp victim."

The girl was in the hospital for about five days, he said, and seemed "traumatized."

There was evidence that she was may have been put in the closet as well as that she was sometimes shackled at the ankle and at other times by a collar around her neck, Miller said.

Eraca Dwan Craig, 31, and Christian Jessica Deana, 44, were both arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony child cruelty, false imprisonment and other charges.

The women, who are domestic partners, do not appear to have criminal records in Monterey County. They were both arraigned in Monterey County Court on Tuesday and are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 28.

Authorities said the women seemed to be making preparations to leave before they were arrested.

Investigators found little food inside the home, which was cluttered and dirty, according to reports.

The girl and the older boy were adopted children, and the younger boy is the biological son of one of the women, Miller said.

Reed Flute Cave in Guilin, China

The Reed Flute Cave is a natural cave carved out of the karst limestone mountains over millions of years, and has been one of Guilin’s most famous attractions for over 1200 years. The cave got its name from the verdant reeds growing outside, which can be made into melodious flutes. Inside this water-eroded cave is a spectacular world of various stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars and rock formations created by carbonate deposition and illuminated by multi-colored lighting to create a surreal experience.

240-meter-long cave is lined with interesting rock shapes and formations resembling all kinds of strange things. Many of the formations have taken on recognizable shapes of mythological creatures, or natural images. There are formations that look like vegetables and one even looks like the Statue of Liberty.

Inside, there are more than 70 inscriptions written in ink, which can be dated back as far as 792 AD in the Tang Dynasty. They are travelogues and poems writing by Tang Dynasty literati who visited the cave. These aged inscriptions tell us that it has been an attraction in Guilin since ancient times. The cave was almost forgotten for a thousand years, before it was rediscovered in the 1940s by a group of refugees fleeing the Japanese troops. The Reed Flute Cave is now marked on almost all travel itineraries. -- http://www.amusingplanet.com/

Science and Research / Re: 'Cosmic Inflation'
March 18, 2014, 09:10:14 PM
The scientists say the light-wave pattern was caused by gravitational waves, which are ripples in the interweaving of space and time that sprawls through the universe. If confirmed, the new work would be the first detection of such waves from the birth of the universe, which have been called the first tremors of the Big Bang.

Arizona State's Krauss cautioned that it's possible that the light-wave pattern is not a sign of inflation, although he stressed that it's "extremely likely" that it is. It's "our best hope" for a direct test of whether the rapid growth spurt happened, he said.

Krauss and other experts said the results must be verified by other observations, a standard caveat in science.

Marc Kamionkowski, a theoretical physicist at Johns Hopkins University who didn't participate in the work, called the detection of the light-wave pattern "huge news" for the study of the cosmos.

"It's not every day you wake up and learn something completely new about the early universe," he said.

Right after the Big Bang, the universe was a hot soup of particles. It took about 380,000 years to cool enough that the particles could form atoms, then stars and galaxies. Billions of years later, planets formed from gas and dust that were orbiting stars. The universe has continued to spread out.

Krauss said he thinks the new finding could rank with the greatest discoveries about the universe over the last 25 years, such as the Nobel prize-winning discovery that the universe's expansion is accelerating.

The new results were announced by a collaboration that includes researchers from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, the University of Minnesota, Stanford University, the California Institute of Technology and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The team plans to submit its results to a scientific journal this week, said its leader, John Kovac of Harvard.

For their research, astronomers scanned about 2 percent of the sky for three years with a telescope at the South Pole, chosen for its very dry air to aid in the observations.

They were looking for a specific pattern in light waves within the faint microwave glow left over from the Big Bang. The pattern has long been considered evidence of the rapid growth spurt, known as inflation. Kovac called it "the smoking gun signature of inflation."

'Cosmic Inflation' Discovery Lends Key Support For Theory Of Expanding Early Universe (VIDEO)

NEW YORK (AP) â€" The universe was born almost 14 billion years ago, exploding into existence in an event called the Big Bang. Now researchers say they've spotted evidence that a split-second later, the expansion of the cosmos began with a powerful jump-start.

Experts called the discovery a major advance if confirmed by others. Although many scientists already believed that initial, extremely rapid growth spurt happened, finding this evidence has been a key goal in the study of the universe. Researchers reported Monday that they did it by peering into the faint light that remains from the Big Bang.

If verified, the discovery "gives us a window on the universe at the very beginning," when it was far less than one-trillionth of a second old, said theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss of Arizona State University, who was not involved in the work.

"It's just amazing," he said. "You can see back to the beginning of time."

Another outside expert, physicist Alan Guth of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said the finding already suggests that some ideas about the rapid expansion of the universe can be ruled out.

The top ten selfie-taking cities are:

Makati City and Pasig, Philippines - 258 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
Manhattan, New York - 202 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
Miami, Florida - 155 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
Anaheim and Santa Ana, California - 147 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
Petaling Jaya, Malaysia - 141 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
Tel Aviv, Israel - 139 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
Manchester, England - 114 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
Milan, Italy - 108 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
Cebu City, Philippines - 99 selfie-takers per 100,000 people
George Town, Malaysia - 95 selfie-takers per 100,000 people

The study was conducted in two sets: January 28 to February 2, 2014 and March 3 to 7, 2014. Results tagged as "selfie" yielded a total of 402,197 Instagram photos within a 24-hour period.

A possible inaccuracy, however, can be noted as not all the photographs can be traced to a location.

TIME also said that the results also reflect "more than just a penchant for selfies" as it ultimately points to smart phone adoption rates and median income among the world's cities.

"As such, this list tends to favor regions just outside major urban areas," Wilson said.

Makati, Pasig world's selfie capitals -TIME
By Camille Diola (philstar.com) | Updated March 11, 2014 - 9:38am

A screenshot from the TIME Magazine report mapping the world's cities with most selfie-takers. The Philippines lands in first and ninth spot.

MANILA, Philippines â€" TIME Magazine built a database of over 400,000 Instagram "selfies" and found that Makati City and neighboring Pasig City are the world's selfie capital.

"Makati City, known as the financial center of the Philippines, can now boast another distinction: It is the Selfie Capital of the World," TIME editor Chris Wilson from Washington wrote in a report posted Tuesday.

"The city, part of metropolitan Manila and home to 500,000 people, produces more selfies per capita than any other city in the world," Wilson added.

The area boasts 258 self-takers per 100,000 people, making it number 1 among the 459 cities that the international magazine evaluated.

The two metropolitan cities, however, are not the only places in the country that landed a spot in the 1011p 10. Cebu City also ranked ninth in the list for having an average of 99 selfie-takers for every 100,000 people.

Second in the chart with 202 selfie-takers per 100,000 people is Manhattan in New York, while Miami, Florida comes third with 155.

Malaysian well-known shaman Ibrahim Mat Zin, bottom right, uses spiritual methods and prayers to locate the missing Malaysia Airlines plane MH370 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, Malaysia, Wednesday, March 12, 2014. The missing Malaysian jetliner may have attempted to turn back before it vanished from radar, but there is no evidence it reached the Strait of Malacca, Malaysia’s air force chief said Wednesday, denying reported remarks he said otherwise. The statement suggested continued confusion over where the Boeing 777 might have ended up, more than four days after it disappeared en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur with 239 people on board. AP
