All I know is that the "friends" of the governor just want their unused lands in Panglao to be bought by the government and they will all be laughing all the way to the bank. I have read several classified documents regarding the Panglao airport brouhaha.

...and i found Tubag Bohol out of a secret frustration too. When Mikey Gatal, who runs the sister (i should say sister forum)mikeygatal.com,  deleted all our post in his site! then sigi nanang ko ug kuri-kuri sa site ni Mikey hangtud na pindotan nako ning tubag Bohol.

Thanks Mikey, this doesnt mean i will be forgeting everything we shared... ;)

Belle, I have to forgive Mikey for doing that. I had to reconstruct things all over again. But what can I do? Nagwala baya pud ko sauna tungod aning gugma-gugma. Reason? Gibalibaran ko ug bayle sa usa ka dalaga. :)

You have a heartwarming story that parallels my own search for info about Bohol at the time my wife and I have seriously considered sending our kids to school in Tagbilaran and partially setting base there.

Yes, I went through the same frustration of browsing through local papers (that seemed to take forever to update their news and even settled for nearby Cebu's SunStar that is at least updated daily), and tried the tourist forums that were always brimming with "ohs and ahs" about the place but lacked substantial content relevant to what I wanted to know.

Ladies and gentlemen,
Ben is a top-rated Filipino journalist in Japan. He used to own and run a newspaper in the Land of the Rising Sun. His crispy ideas and unconventional commentaries have been quoted by several newspapers and magazines. You can actually google him. If you wish to know his real name, just PM him. :)

Ben, I'm glad that you understand my feeling of frustration. In the age of information highway and knowledge economy, those who know more will win in the economic race.

Feel free to promote your business ventures in Tubag Bohol without any cost. Hint: Your profile's signature is a powerful marketing tool.

Out of the many things that I learned from my tenured stay in Tubag Bohol, one thing that struck me is the humility and genuine nature of Boholanos.

Bran, what I learned is that it is only in Tubag Bohol where you will always get a warm welcome. There is always that delicious "welcome message" afforded to every new arrival, and the welcome is becoming sweeter day by day.

One thing that distinguishes the Boholano people is the way we celebrate fiestas.

I can see this sweet hospitality, authentic humanity of the Boholano people by the way TB members treat virtual friends and not-so-familiar friends.

This is a post Tubag Bohol birthday reflection.

From 2000-2002 I was editing and writing for a travel magazine in Davao City. Your Guide was the name of the magazine. It was published by Midtown Printing Company, Inc., the sponsor of my Silliman scholarship (1996-2000).

During those times I used to send emails to resorts, hotels, business establishments in Bohol. I introduced the magazine and offered to them free write-ups. But walay mo-"tubag" to my emails and letters. (I can truly empathize with Balong's feeling when he tried to get in touch with Panglao Island Resort.)

When I came to Thailand in 2006, I felt for the first time a profound pain of being uprooted from our homeland. I had been living in different cities and provinces outside Bohol, but living in a foreign land is entirely a different experience. There is always this longing for news or any info about home. To cure the longing for home, I would browse Philippine websites and Bohol-related websites. I wrote several emails to website owners asking them if they have this and that information. But walay mo-"tubag" to my emails. (Jeroen Hellingman of bohol.ph is an exemption. I really like this man from Netherlands, the webmaster of bohol.ph. I was so encouraged when he placed Tubag Bohol in bohol.ph without question. He is the only webmaster who accommodated my request to place Tubag Bohol link in another website.)

I am not a computer science graduate (I completed a degree in Mass Communication from Silliman.) I didn't have a computer/laptop and neither did I have an Internet connection in Anda or in Tagbilaran. I was thinking that there must be a way in the Internet where people can share information and get in touch with each other at a deeper level of friendship and intimacy. But I am not a computer science graduate. So I took up BS-BS (Bachelor in Basa-Basa). :)

In 2007 I had a little saving and I used it to buy the domain mikeligalig.com and rent a server. I just used this domain to house my resume/biodata and contact information.

The secret frustration nga walay mo-tubag to my emails to Philippine websites gave me an idea to use "tubag" and attach the word to "bohol," thus "tubagbohol." I was only experimenting how things would work if I posted information in tubagbohol site and invited others to read my own collection of research. I had this passion of sending emails to friends whenever I stumbled an excellent research material. I no longer send emails because I can now post any information in Tubag Bohol.

The frustration only deepened because whenever I posted something in Tubag Bohol, walay mo-tubag. I had to endure long nights of solitary confinement in Tubag Bohol posting any info that I deemed important to Boholanos and Filipinos. I sent invitation emails to my contacts in Bohol but my emails got lost. Maybe. The stats was: Most Online Today 1; Most Online Ever 1. But one day the number became 2. Her displayed name was "jeweloftheorient." Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome "Mari." She was the jeweloftheorient nga nasaag diri. She registered in TB but she never came back until 5 or 6 months later. :)

I felt so alone online. I could only imagine of my mother, my father, and my sister having an Internet connection in Bohol so we could all communicate without incurring a shocking cost. To call to the Philippines from Thailand is horribly expensive.

For months I felt so alone online. I almost gave up. I had posted hundreds of topics but TB's only reader, jeweloftheorient, was nowhere to be found.

Bob Parsons, founder of GoDaddy Inc., said, and I quote:

"Never give up. Almost nothing works the first time it's attempted. Just because what you're doing does not seem to be working, doesn't mean it won't work. It just means that it might not work the way you're doing it. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it, and you wouldn't have an opportunity."

Has Tagbilaran City run out of beauties? This was a question raised by observant beauty pageant aficionados when a lovely lass from Panglao was crowned Miss Tagbilaran 2008. Yes, she deserved the crown but the main issue is the residency requirement. The truth is she’s from Panglao. Stacy Mae Arisola who represented Taloto has no residency in Tagbilaran City as she hails from Garcia Hernandez town.

The organizers indeed have a lot of explaining to do regarding this matter. Further compounding the issue is the placement of a girl from the town of Clarin as one of the runners- up. There’s no guideline that Miss Tagbilaran is an open contest wherein contestants from other towns and provinces can join.

This year’s sterling committee (headed by Dave Maulas) was in bad light when the “controversy” of the pre-screening erupted in the air lanes. Even Dave was impolite to turn down the phone when he was interviewed on dyRD’s Pulso (hosted by Batchoy Balba and Prof. Rene Real) about the “controversy.”

It started when Susanne Mae dela Cruz “presented” herself as Miss Booy when in fact there’s already Melle Angelie Doroy who won the Miss Boy Search in July 2007. De la Cruz showed no papers as she’s endorsed  by barangay Booy making the barangay council headed Jun Telmo in quandary.

“Is it improper to present yourself as a candidate without any proof? And to know that there was a legitimate contestant from that barangay?”  True unimpeachable Very Reliable Source (VRS) said.

The pre-screening committee (which I think not needed because not all barangays were represented) decided to choose top 10. Call it “manipulation” that Doroy was not included in the top 10 (she landed 11th during the pre-screening) but when it was thoroughly reviewed it was found out that Doroy was actually the 9th placer. The committee had asked an apology for the mistake they committed and instead of top 10 they made it top 12 either to accommodate other “favorite” girls and to cover the “shame.”

The pageant started on time and opened with the spectacular opening number which showcased the dazzling and breath- taking costumes of the 12 candidates and the superb performance of the Diwanag Dance Theatre and Cultural Troupe.

Miss Tagbilaran 2008 holds the distinction of being the first local pageant to be held at an air- conditioned venue, the Bohol Cultural Center.

This year's batch of candidates is one of the most competitive in recent years.  After the swimsuit and evening gown competitions, the top five were proclaimed and the interview portion immediately followed. After an intermission number, the final three were called and asked the final question. After the obligatory farewell walk of last year's winner, the new Miss Tagbilaran and her court were proclaimed and crowned.

The minus points of the pageant include the very dragging choreography. For instance, in the gown portion, each candidate was given at least three to five minutes to show off her gown. By the time the evening gown portion was halfway through, a sizable number of the audience had either gone home or silently protesting of the ordeal of sitting through the rest of the show. The technical aspect of the show particularly the lighting effects were disappointing to say the least.

Furthermore, the AVP's shown on the wide screen were very amateurish.

Seasoned host saves the show

As expected, Bohol’s seasoned host, Mr. Raul Gatal, dazzled the crowd with his witty repartees and competent handling of the pageant's loopholes and technical difficulties. Even Rovilson Fernandez, executive director of Maxim magazine and partner of Marc Nelson in the Amazing Race (where the pair won third place) was impressed with Mr. Gatal's hosting.

According to my VRS, Mr. Gatal was only informed that he was to be the pageant host only two days before the pageant night!

Furthermore, my VRS further revealed that “kinawawa ng organizers si Mr. Gatal with a very measly talent fee.” To think that he actually saved the show! A seasoned host like Raul deserves the best talent fee.

A seven year-old boy was swallowed by a crocodile while swimming with a teen-aged brother at the waters in Palawan province, Philippines on Wednesday, a top official of the PNP in the region reported Thursday.

Chief Superintendent Luisito Palmera, MIMAROPA (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), identified the victim as Mostaqem Ibrahim of Sitio Sumorom, Ransang village in Rizal town.

Citing initial information, Palmera said Ibrahim was swimming with his 12-year-old brother Jadnor when they were attacked by a crocodile at around 1 p.m.

“Said incident was witnessed by his brother Jadnor who immediately shouted for help. His father immediately responded together with their neighbors,” said Palmera.

An hour after the incident, Palmera said residents caught a crocodile - measuring at least 14 feet and 9 inches long and two feet in width. He said the residents cut the crocodile’s stomach but did not found the victim’s body.

“Its apparently a different crocodile,” said Palmera. The official said efforts are underway to recover the victim.

Also, reading classic literature will really make a difference the way we use words. But one of the earliest love letters that was sent to a young girl in the 90s was written by my mother. Until now 'the girl' did not know that it was my mother who wrote that letter. Thanks, Mama.

I've read and heard some people justifying their inappropriate behavior by borrowing the sacred term "freedom of expression", which was laid out by the forerunners of American democracy.

Freedom of speech or freedom of expression has been abused and misused online and offline.

The truth of the matter is we can never enjoy any form of freedom if we don't take responsibility for our own action.

Just because a person has freedom of speech he could just shout "Sunog, sunog" in the middle of a sentimental play in a crowded theater when there wasn't fire at all? Can this person shout "sunog, sunog" on on the basis of freedom of speech?

Is this freedom of expression?

Brazilian football star Ronaldo has been caught up in a sex scandal with three cross-dressing prostitutes.

Having dropped off his girlfriend at her house in Rio de Janeiro on Monday night, the 2002 World Cup winner picked up three prostitutes.

When they all booked into a motel, the AC Milan striker discovered that the prostitutes were in fact men.

According to Rio police, he alleges that the transvestites then tried to extort money from him.

Local press reports quoted one of the prostitutes, Andreia Albertine - otherwise known as Andre Luiz Ribeiro Albertino - as saying that Ronaldo had threatened to hit him, on discovering that he was a transvestite.

The proceed of this bidding will be used for the scholarship fund for one agriculture student that Tubag Bohol dot Com will send this June 2008. This program is an initiative of Lindy, of Canada. We all have been aware of the rice shortage and food crisis in the Philippines today. And we also know that most students don't take up agriculture, but nursing or seaman (sheman in Balong's term). To learn more about the scholarship award, just pindota lang ni, palihug.

The coin, a collection of my never-been-met lola in Zamboanga del Sur, is dated 1972. Some years from now, this coin will turn half-a-century old. Maybe your grandson/daughter could sell it with a shocking price in the future.

The official bidding begins today, and will end on May 10, 2008.

Your wish is my command, Macky. I will now start a thread for the bidding of my 1972 Philippine coin. May my deceased lola forgive me.

LIVING WATER STRATEGY
By Architect Bobby Cericos

To direct a shift away from the ‘social patterns’ still being practiced, reacted and engaged.

    * Instead of ‘politics as usual’ lets engage a shift to eco-wisdom, social responsibility, grassroots democracy, sexual equality and peace. Add to the economic thinking a stand for a decentralized, equitable and flexible system â€" one which gives boholanos a degree of control over their lives.

    * In a political language, to quote some political  philosophy â€" a system that is neither left nor right but a decentralized political  system that is in front.

    * Think global but act local

Bohol’s Economy

As a general rule while politicians receive mandates to solve the economic life of a certain constituency, they have been unable to do so except for some fluctuating improvements in a few areas. The reason these leaders â€" wether conservative, liberal/left or center â€" cannot find a solution is that they subscribe to narrow perceptions of the problem. These problems are systemic in nature, that is, closely interconnected and interdependent.

Economic experts of whatever school of thought  (monetarist, supply side, and others), generally lack an ecological perspective. This of course considers the fundamental truth of its interconnectedness with us â€" humans. They define their basic concepts-efficiency, productivity, GNP, and so forth in a narrow way, without considering the social and ecological context. It should be clear by experience and now that unlimited expansion of economic activities in a finite environment can only lead to disaster.

Bohol’s economic policy therefore can be based on three (3) principles: ‘ecology’, ‘social responsibility’, and ‘grassroots democracy’. A fourth principle can be added along the idea that an economy based on those three principles will be ecologically balanced and socially just therefore is nonviolent.

We are for an economic system oriented towards the vital requirements of people and of future generations, towards the preservation of nature and the judicious handling of natural resources. Develop a society in which interpersonal relationships and the relationships between humans and nature become more the subject of conscious consideration, a society where attention to nature’s life cycles, the development and use of technology, and the relationship between production and consumption become the business of all those concerned.

A Bohol economy that develops an approach in which ecology, economy, and social concerns are united is imperative.
Ecological investments

Energy production, Recycling, Water management*, Agriculture, Housing, Traffic, and Education

* Dealing with water demands a reorientation of policies ‘doing justice to the importance of water as the carrier of life’ water is the most complex and, besides air, the most important substance of life on earth, its quality is the environmental indicator par excellence… Water is not consumed but borrowed â€" and as such should be returned in their original condition.

An economy along these discipline and beliefs will offer tremendous opportunities for HUMAN CREATIVITY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, AND INITIATIVE!

This is a tragedy. I had an experience sa Gallares Hospital. I brought my mother there kay we can't afford sa private na hospital. That was in 2006. Bag-o lang. For five hours naa ra mi didto naglingkod, walay mo-entertain. Sa dihang diha nay nurse, giingnan lang mi na wala nay room. So niuli nalang pud mi ni Mama.

Ang nakaapan man gud sa ato kay ang public funds tua tanan sige pasemento ug kalsada, tukod ug tulay, tukod ug dam. Billions and billions of money are wasted kay puro sub-standard or ghost projects. Wala nay funds for public health.

A recruitment industry leader on Monday encouraged high school graduates to consider taking up technical-vocational courses, as he stressed the high demand in the global labor market for skilled construction and manufacturing workers.

Lito Soriano, president of LBS E-Recruitment Solutions and one who finished vocational education and rose to become one of the recruitment industry’s acknowledged consultants, pressed his call for high school graduates of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to shift their college aspirations to vocational courses rather than taking on the usual courses in diploma mills and after graduating only to join the millions of jobless college graduates.

“I am urging high school students to look into the “wave of the future - overseas jobs with high pay for skilled construction and manufacturing workers. I want to call on all high school students especially children of OFWs to carefully rate and study the performance of the school they want to enroll and spend their limited family income.

"Does the school’s graduates find jobs after graduation? Does the school assist its graduates in getting jobs or will they after graduation join the millions of educated jobless?” he said.

Soriano noted that a college or university education does not guarantee employment, adding that college graduates find themselves in odd jobs in call centers, malls, fast foods outlets and factory workers.

Foreign businessmen echoed the need to shift to technical-vocational curriculum.

Henry Schumacher, executive vice-president of the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), said greater effort from both the government and the private sector is needed to narrow the gap between what companies need and what schools provide.

“We should always look at opportunities to narrow this gap. We need to improve the educational system and influence schools to improve their curricula,” he said.

Schumacher said another challenge to employment is convincing parents that young Filipinos don’t need a college degree to get a decent-paying job, as well as convincing employers to stop looking for college diplomas when hiring people.

The idea was conceptualized by our friend, Lindy, who is based in Canada. To commemorate the first year anniversary of Tubag Bohol, the fastest-growing forum site in the Philippines today, we are planning to award a scholarship to a Bol-anon student who will take up an agriculture-related course.

The table is now open for your suggestions as to how we can raise a trust fund, go about the process of selection, and formulate simple policies.

And the winners are Hazel and Grace. Magtunga sila sa usa ka karaang peso (circa 1972) ug ila ning ipatunaw aron himuong sing-sing sinubong.

No. One coin each for Hazel and Grace. Way tunga-tunga.

The two almost hit the mark (guesstimate). The coin will be sent "via hand-tunol."

Sama Sa Dalan Paingon Sa Imong Dughan
gitagik ni Mike Ligalig

Gisud-ong mo ako
nga nagpakli-pakli
sa gatosan ka mga libro.

Miliki sa imong ngabil
ang hanap nga pahiyom
ug nangutana ka
kung unsa ang akong gipangita,
kung unsa kadtong mga libro
nga gihakgom sa akong mga bukton.

Gitunol ko kanimo
ang mga libro
aron imong mabasa
ang mga ulohan
nga sukad wa mo pa hidunggan.

Imong giuli kanako
ang mga libro
ug igo ka lang miyango-yango.

Tabangan mo kaha ako
sa pagpangita sa mga libro?

Sama sa akong pagpangita
sa liko-likong dalan
paingon sa imong dughan?

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (PGMA) breezes through Bohol on Tuesday, April 29 to fill a leg of journey that would finally connect key ports in the country’s central seaboard.

This happens as she leads the inauguration rites of the Central Seaboard of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH).

The SRNH, the Administration’s brain child involves funding the putting up of Roll-on, Roll-off (RoRo) ports system aimed at perking up inter-island farm trade.

The SRNH also hopes to improve flow and distribution of basic goods and services, reduce travel time and transportation costs as well as promote domestic tourism.

Set in the Central Philippines, thus Central Seaboard, the government funded key improvement projects on intricate network of roads and ports in various regions in Luzon and the Visayas to Mindanao to finally unite the country’s three main islands groups.

While the country has a backbone Maharlika highway that connects Luzon to Mindanao, travel of unprocessed farm goods by land has put up huge losses, one that makes it not as economically viable option for farmers, shippers have complained.

With the SRNH opening up its Central seaboard, the delivery of basic goods and farm produce like vegetables and livestock is easier, more economical and efficient as travel time and costs to and from destinations are considerably reduced, government sources said.

With the Central Seaboard opened, travelers and farm produce from the north going to the south can now take the Bulan Sorsogon to Masbate City ferry, then motor to Cawayan, Masbate where a ferry is again available for Bogo, Cebu.

From Bogo, it would be a land trip to Cebu City where the port has a ferry to Tubigon, Bohol.

In Tubigon, Bohol, one can take the land trip to Jagna Bohol where one exits Bohol to Mambajao Camiguin, and then to Cagayan de Oro City in Misamis Oriental.

Ladies and gentlemen, don't forget China and India. China has 1.2 billion people. India has 1.1 billion. Bohol has 1.2 million population. Bohol Internet users: estimate: 10,000. It's even difficult to get an Internet connection in Dampas.

The figures will tell us who will win in the long run.

We could win by online votes, but I doubt if we could win by paid votes. The contest provides two ways to win: paid votes and online surveys.

The organizer of this contest is a private corporation.

Hi Ate Litz,

Sa canvassing sa among baryo, akong duha ka uncle aron modaug akong auntie sa queen search, nagdala ug dakong bulsita nga puno kintahay to sa kwarta pero ang ibabaw ra diay to apan ang ilawom puro papel. Na-shock ang ubang mga contenders, so wala nalang sila mobundak kay mapildi ra man gihapon. :)

With P300 na-queen akong auntie. Arang bagotbot ug mahay sa ubang contestant kay diha man silay linibo nga pinadala sa gawas nga ibubo unta para ma-rayna sa fiesta pero wala nalang pagkakita nga dakong bulsita ang dala sa akong mga uncle.

Remember President George? When he ordered an attack on Iraq? He used first the best of American military power aptly described by him as "shock and awe" war approach.

Hi Gem,

I know Clovis Nazareno. I met him at St Jude Hospital when I was 12 years old. He won't remember that. Clovis is dead already.

I know Pete Lacaba. He was our one of our panelists at the UP National Writers Workshop held in Davao City. He won't remember me. :)

Coycoy Ponte and Reigh Monreal are writers I admired. We know each other. CoyCoy Ponte won first prize in the CPG Memorial Awards for Literature for his poem "Nagsuwat Ako ug Balak Ilawom Sa Kahoy", and my poem entitled "Dili Ikaw Ang Kataposan, Oliver" won the second prize. My poem tackled on the death of a habal-habal driver who was killed in an ambush in Danao.

There are many "ngilngig" writers from Bohol and in Bohol. Some of them are Chito Fuentes, Marjorie Evasco (English professor in DLSU), Sigbin II, Atty. Handel Lagunay, "thisgirlvader" (aka Chinook in Friendster), and the list is never ending. I'll add more after this cup of coffee. Alas kwatro naman diay sa kadlawon. :)
