Evolution of previous FIFA world cup match balls

No matter how often the ball is changed, Blair pointed out, it will never keep every player happy. He recalls players complaining that the ball was "too light" in 2010. "It couldn't be," he said, because FIFA strictly regulates nearly every aspect of ball design, including weight. "The one thing that FIFA does not test for is aerodynamic performance," he said.

In the end, as with all elements of a game, it comes down to how the players adjust.

"All the players are playing with the same ball. They all get introduced to the ball at the same time," he said. "Some will be able to adapt their style quicker, some will evolve faster than others do."

The ball went through a range of scientific tests to assure that it would complement the players' skills on the field, rather than adding a skill set all its own. "We do extensive flight path analysis and the results have shown constant and predictable paths, with deviations hardly recognizable," Matthias Mecking told the BBC. Mecking is Adidas's football director.

"We've come full circle," says NASA Ames Research Center scientists Ravi Mehta. "It's back to knuckling at about 30mph." He was not involved in the design but has tested the ball. Another important factor, he says, is the amount of friction between the ball and the player's boot.

The smoother 2006 and 2010 balls decreased this friction, making it harder for players to put spin on the ball. They had aerodynamic grooves and small ridges, but these were "not effective," says Mehta. The latest version, with its deeper and longer seams, fixes this issue. There are also small dimples on the surface to help decrease drag. These work in the same way as the dimples on a golf ball -- by disrupting airflow, they allow it to travel faster.
#12705

"The surface characteristics - the seams, seam length, how the seams shape the surface of the ball -- have a lot to do with how active the ball will be," Dr. Kim Blair told CBS News in a phone interview. Blair is a material scientist with Cooper Perkins in Boston. He was not involved in designing the Brazuca.

Researchers at the Centre for Sports Engineering Research at Sheffield Hallam University measured the seams of the Jabulani and the Brazuca, determining that the Jabulani's seams are about .48 mm deep compared to 1.56 mm for the Brazuca. The seams on the Brazuca stretch to 327 cm, compared to 203 cm on the Jabulani.

Adidas' "Brazuca" ball features six propeller-shaped polyurethane patches that are thermally-bonded together.(Photo: NASA Ames Research Center)

Traditionally, a typical soccer ball knuckles at about 30 miles per hour. This is slower than average kicking speeds, so it requires a bit of skill for the strikers to kick at precisely the right speed. But in 2006, it was knuckling at about 50mph, a speed more typical at the World Cup level. That meant the ball was knuckling much more often. In 2010, the speed for knuckling was even higher.

Leading into the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Adidas addressed these issues with the new "Brazuca" ball. The 12th official World Cup ball designed by the company, it features six propeller-shaped polyurethane patches that are thermally-bonded together.

The 2010 Jabulani ball had eight panels. The 2006 ball had 14. Before that, the balls were made of 32 internally-stitched panels. By decreasing the number of panels, they decreased the seams, creating a smoother surface. This smoother surface allows it to travel at higher speeds before it started knuckling.

World Cup's soccer ball the most high-tech yet

Danielle Elliot, CBS NEWS
June 14, 2014

(CBS NEWS) -- Every four years, FIFA introduces a new official World Cup ball. A ton of science goes into the process -- and whether the players like it comes down to physics.

Designed by Adidas, the ball itself is not meant to make headlines. But over the last two Cups, that's exactly what's happened. In 2010, Brazilian striker Luis Fabiano described that World Cup's ball - the Jabulani - as "supernatural." Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said, "It's trajectory is unpredictable."

The reason that balls seemed so erratic is that it was "knuckling" at different speeds than expected. Knuckling is when the ball wobbles in the air, following an unpredictable flight path. It's a tool for strikers, a menace for goalkeepers.

Goals for Galilee: The Triumphs and Traumas of the Sons of Sakhnin, Israel’s Arab Football Club
by Jerrold Kessel and Pierre Klochdendler

[...Kessel and his cameraman made a documentary film], We Have No Other Land, about the soccer team of Sakhnin, an Arab town in Galilee. It has a Jewish manager and several Jewish players, but is an Arab team. Against all odds it captured Israel’s State Cup, and represented Israel in Europe. It’s a true story of football conquering prejudice in one of the most suspicious lands on earth.

***

The message is that Arab and Jew are so close to each other, the border is so thin, that they’re really the same people. It’s really like having two different tribes of the same person, forever warring. For the club, there are two successes really.

One is that the club survives, because its field has been bombed just about every time that Israel bombs across the border. But, forgetting the material side, the second success is a spiritual thing â€" the club has a Jewish coach, it has Jewish players, but mostly it’s an Arab team.

To me, the biggest shock with this whole story is that they were allowed to compete and win the Israel State Cup. Israel allowed an Arab team to compete in their cup, and then win it, and then, having won it, they had the right and took it to compete in Europe as an Israeli team. And that’s very powerful. My feeling is that soccer is a lingua franca, it can cross all the boundaries.

FIFA World Cup qualification

The FIFA World Cup qualification is the process that a national association football team goes through to qualify for the FIFA World Cup Finals. The FIFA World Cup is a global event, so qualification is required to reduce the large field of participants from about 200 to 32.

Qualifying tournaments are held within the six FIFA continental zones (Africa, Asia, North and Central America and Caribbean, South America, Oceania, Europe), and are organized by their respective confederations. For each tournament, FIFA decides beforehand the number of spots awarded to each of the continental zones, based on the numbers and/or relative strength of the confederations' teams. (wikipedia)

Barack Obama

Throughout the most recent presidential campaign, claims of Barack Obama being the Antichrist were so rampant that at one point Snopes.com even felt compelled to step in. But damn, he wasn't even in office yet. What could people possibly be basing a claim like that on?

We're not completely sure and we're not going to make any outrageous claims about the "Obama is evil" crowd. Oh, before we forget to ask, have you ever seen one of those movies where people are in court and someone yells out something like "you're a bunch of racist fucksticks!" and someone objects and the judge advises the jury to ignore that outburst even though he knows they can't because it's already been said and the jury clearly heard it? Just asking.

"Okay, everyone pretend you didn't just hear the phrase 'racist fucksticks.'"

What His Accusers Have To Say

Ok, it's not all racism behind the Obama as Antichrist talk, sometimes it's just buffoonery and conspiracy theory babbling. If you check out that Snopes link, you'll note that approximately two sentences into the email that we probably all received at some point last year, it's noted that the book of Revelation says the Antichrist will be a Muslim. No, it actually doesn't. But even if it did, Obama isn't a Muslim. Sure, we know that, and you probably do also. But we all probably know someone who thinks they are. Don't bother arguing, they read it at Free Republic.

But there are those accusers who shy away from the Muslim claims and head straight into New World Order conspiracy mongering.

Not quite.

Without fail, where there are Antichrist accusations, there are usually New World Order allegations close behind. Every U.S. President on this list has been accused of trying to usher in a New World Order at some point. We're so tired of hearing about it, we kind of wish it would just f***** happen already. Converting currency when you travel is kind of a bitch anyway.

Pros:

Well liked, promises change

Different from other "kings"

Rose from obscurity

Cons:

Just about everything else

Our Verdict

If Obama hopes to become the Antichrist, he's got a lot of s*** left to accomplish first. Until all of that happens, we're not buying it. And while he doesn't seem to fit the profile... isn't that what the Antichrist would want us to think???!?

We're getting so sick of hearing about the end of the world from these people we're pretty much ready for it to just happen at this point. Just get it over with already. We're clearly never getting our flying cars, beholding a pale horse may be just as awesome, provided it can fly.

Who's a cute little sign of the Apocalypse? You are! Yes you are!

Roman Emperor Nero Ceasar

Sure, damn near every U.S. President for the past couple of decades has had their name thrown into the Antichrist hat, but through the ages, no name comes up more than former (obviously) Roman emperor Nero Ceasar.

And he's certainly got a decent amount of atrocities under his ancient belt to make him seem like the kind of dude that might sign on to come back someday and end the world. That he once tried to kill his mother by sending her off on a defective ship he built shows a dedication to excessively elaborate plans for destruction. His appointment to the status of emperor at an age (16) when most dudes are still pining for that first hand job and peppering every other sentence with the word "fail" shows he's a real go-getter. Nobody has ever accused the Antichrist of being lazy.

What His Accusers Have To Say

One of the biggest signs that point to Nero being the Antichrist is the number 666. According to people capable of pulling off numberless Hebrew translation magic of this sort, 666 is code for the name Nero Ceasar. The earliest text to point to Nero as the Antichrist is Ascension of Isaiah, which includes the tasty line "lawless king, the slayer of his mother,...will come and there will come with him all the powers of this world, and they will hearken unto him in all that he desires."

Even though the boat thing didn't work out, he did eventually slay moms. And he was unusually harsh towards Christians, like any Antichrist worth his hellfire would be. Maybe there is something to this?

Pros:

Name translates to 666

Slayed his mom

Mean to Christians

People liked him, a lot

Cons:

No kick ass bar codes on follower's hands

Never claimed to be God

Didn't make anyone worship Satan

Appears to just be a stone head on a stick in most pictures, not much potential for future destruction

Good luck bringing about Armageddon without a nose, dipshit.

Our Verdict

Preterists, the people who tend to believe Nero was the Antichrist, also believe everything in the Bible is history. So, the tribulation, the coming of the Antichrist, everything, has already happened. What the f***? If the world already ended, what's all this we're doing now? The post-game show?

Pope Benedict XVI

Joseph Ratzinger, who goes by the stage name "Pope Benedict XVI," is one of the most popular current candidates for the role of Antichrist.

He hasn't really been in place long enough to have racked up any kind of track record of wrongdoing. Sure, there have been plenty of pedophile scandals, but he kind of inherited that problem. And there is the issue of him having been a member of the Hitler Youth. Granted, at the time, joining the Hitler Youth was a requirement for boys of his age, and by most accounts he wasn't too happy about it.

Doesn't he look happy?

But who lets fact get in the way of a good scandal?

What His Accusers Have To Say

If you Google "Pope Benedict XVI Antichrist" the first result you come across is the mysteriously named website www.popebenedictantichrist.com. Seems like a good enough place to start. Among the evidence they cite is Revelation 17: 7,9 - "The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth." If you're asking "What the f***?" keep in mind, Rome sits on seven hills, apparently. Does this mean any Pope in the history of forever fits into that description? Yes, yes it does. But JoeRat is the Pope right now, so it has to be him, right? And he's apparently a woman also.

Look at him, clapping. Just like the devil.

Pros:

Has no regard for the desire of women

Different from other kings (a Pope from Germany?)

Worshiped by many people, sort of

Looks creepy as all hell

Cons:

Has yet to change the calendar

Seems to dig the religion of his ancestors

Vatican Military probably couldn't accomplish much

Arrival on the world scene not accompanied by miracles

Our Verdict

Antichrist revealing is big business. Don't believe us? Check out [which website] would love to sell you a book explaining why "The Pope" is the Antichrist. Which Pope? Whatever Pope sells you the book, they don't really specify. There probably hasn't been a Pope for several decades that wasn't accused of being the Antichrist. Nothing about this Pope makes him any more likely to bring about your destruction than anyone who preceded him.

He does look pretty f***** scary though.

Mikhail Gorbachev

The New Coke to Reagan's Pepsi, Gorbachev's ultimately failed attempts to reform the Soviet Union made him so popular on the world stage that it's no surprise books hit the shelves at the height of his power declaring him to be the Antichrist.

It seemed so plausible in 1988. A reformed, sprawling, thriving, atheist Soviet Empire? The prophecy is fulfilled! Run for the hills!

Then the Soviet Union sputtered into collapse, and that was that.

What His Accusers Have To Say

It's a cruel irony that the guy who went to the negotiating table with Regan to help bring the world back from the brink of nuclear Armageddon so frequently got accused of being the Antichrist. You know, the guy who was to bring about Armageddon.

Raise your hand if you're the Antichrist. Hah! Gotcha.

Actually, it's not irony at all, it's prophecy! As this site so helpfully points out, it's the peace itself he helped bring about that marks him as a devil:

"The modern peace symbol is, in fact, a satanic symbol called the "Cross Of Nero" (Nero was a Roman emperor who was infamous for his ruthless persecution and murder of Christians). The symbol is an inverted, broken Christian cross in a circle and is supposed to signify the defeat of Christianity (see Bob Larson's book, Satanism, p.109).

This represents how peace in the modern world is a false, antichristian peace."

Man... we're skeptical on the whole, but, if there's some kind of argument to be made against that logic, we'll be damned if we know what it is. Check and mate.

But even if the lack of nuclear annihilation wasn't enough of a warning sign to you, just check out the forehead:

Though, we suppose it could be worse.

As this site informs us, "Many have mentioned that 'mark' on his forehead. The Bible does say in Revelation that the Antichrist will require everyone to 'receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand.' (Revelation 14:9)"

Don't you see? It has the words "mark" and "forehead" right there in the prophecy! And he has a mark on his forehead! s***!

Pros:

Charismatic leader

Worldwide popularity

Ruled an enormous empire

Weird thing on his head

Cons:

Looked like a huge pussy compared to previous Soviet leaders

Was instrumental in making the whole Armageddon thing not come true

Our Verdict

If we were in the apocalyptic books market in the 80s, our personal theory would have been that Reagan and Gorbachev were both the Antichrist. We're thinking that between the two of them they surely filled all of the criteria, combining to form a sort of anti-Christian Voltron. We could have made millions off that theory.

"And I'll form the apocalypse."

But here's the one we're going with now: With the largest empire in the world under his command, along with a nuclear arsenal that could destroy the planet hundreds of times over and the ear of every world leader... we're thinking that Gorby was actually supposed to be the Antichrist. He simply fucked it up.

Ronald Reagan

Sure, at times it seemed like the Alzheimer's set in about halfway through his presidency, but overall Ronald Reagan got a free pass and was generally well liked. Hell, he won 49 friggin' states in the 1984 election.

"Ooh, I'm Minnesota, I'm better than everyone, oooh." Get over yourself.

What His Accusers Have To Say

As usual, numbers come into play. It's said that the Antichrist will carry the Mark of the Beast (666). Where was Rockin' Ronnie's mark? In his name, of course, Ronald Wilson Reagan. That's six letters in each name, folks. 666. But it doesn't end there.

People have come up with an entire laundry list of other reasons why Reagan was the Antichrist. They range everywhere from the stupid (Revelation 13:3 - "One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed" refers to James Brady?) to the very stupid (Revelation 13:2 - ".... its feet were like a bear's ...." refers to the state animal of Reagan's adopted home state of California).

Pros:

Six letters in each name.

Survived a mortal wound (although not to the head).

First Lady wore a lot of red.

Moved to a house at 666 St. Cloud Rd. upon retirement.

What are you hiding under that hat, Ronnie? Horns?!

Cons:

Never blasphemed God.

Was most definitely not succeeded by Christ.

Was not homosexual (as far as we know).

Kind of a shitty actor. We expect more from the Antichrist.

The number of the Beast probably isn't even 666.

Our Verdict

First of all, every person with six letters in each of their names does not qualify as the Antichrist. Mad Magazine associate editor Jerry DiFusco suggested that the E in Alfred E. Newman stands for Enigma. Alfred Enigma Newman. Do the math. Is this the face of the Antichrist?

Well, we certainly think so.

As you'll find with most people on this list, while there may be a few striking coincidences, there is actually a list of twenty-seven characteristics that the Antichrist must possess. While a simple stretching of the truth could make Reagan fit into some of them (you know, he did speak boastfully!), he falls well short on many others. Too many others to even list, in fact. Sorry, paranoid left wingers, Ronnie ain't yer demon. Keep your eye on that Newman fucker though.

5 World Leaders Who Were Accused of Being the Antichrist

By Adam Tod Brown
January 18, 2009

Be it from asteroids, nuclear war or global warming, our society is obsessed with the end of the world. It's our thing.

By far our favorite apocalypse scenario is the Christian one that says the Antichrist will rise up, take over the world, start a planet-wide war and trigger a series of supernatural events so bizarre you'd need several huge hits of LSD to fully appreciate them. That only leaves the big question: Who is this Antichrist guy?

As we speak, apocalypse enthusiasts everywhere are busy trying to answer that question. So far they've made vigorous cases for...

15) The Pope as the Antichrist - Many Protestant reformers, including Martin Luther, John Calvin, Thomas Cranmer, John Thomas, John Knox, and Cotton Mather, identified the Roman Papacy as the Antichrist. The Centuriators of Magdeburg, a group of Lutheran scholars in Magdeburg headed by Matthias Flacius, wrote the 12-volume "Magdeburg Centuries" to discredit the papacy and identify the pope as the Antichrist.

16) Czar Peter the Great - because of his treatment of the Orthodox Church, namely subordinating the church to the state, requiring clergymen to conform to the standards of all Russian civilians (shaved beards, being fluent in French), and requiring them to pay state taxes

John Chrysostom (c. 347â€"407) warned against speculations and old wives' tales about the Antichrist, saying, "Let us not therefore enquire into these things". He preached that by knowing Paul's description of the Antichrist in 2 Thessalonians Christians would avoid deception.

Jerome (c. 347-420) warned that those substituting false interpretations for the actual meaning of Scripture belonged to the "synagogue of the Antichrist". "He that is not of Christ is of Antichrist," he wrote to Pope Damasus I.

5) the antichrist would come from the tribe of Dan and would rebuild the Jewish temple on the Temple Mount in order to reign from it, according to Hippolytus of Rome (c. 170-c. 236)

6) the Antichrist, who will reign as the ruler of the world for three and a half years, before he is killed by Jesus Christ right at the end of his three-and-a-half-year reign, shortly after which the Second Coming of Jesus Christ will happen, according to Cyril of Jerusalem, in the mid-4th century, when he delivered his 15th Catechetical Lecture about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, in which he also lectures about the Antichrist

7) Arius of Alexandria is to be associated with the Antichrist, according to Athanasius of Alexandria (c. 298 â€" 373), who writes, "And ever since [the Council of Nicaea] has Arius's error been reckoned for a heresy more than ordinary, being known as Christ's foe, and harbinger of Antichrist."

dubbed as "antichrists" in history (depending on which side one is on):

1) everyone who preached false doctrine was an antichrist, according to Polycarp (ca. 69 â€" ca. 155)

2) "Evanthos", "Lateinos" ("Latin" or pertaining to the Roman Empire), according to Irenaeus (2nd century AD â€" c. 202) wrote "Against Heresies" to refute the teachings of the Gnostics. He uses "666", the Number of the Beast from Revelation 13:18, to numerologically decode several possible names.

3) Belial and Nero, according to "The Ascension of Isaiah", a detailed exposition of the Antichrist

4) The Roman Empire, according to Tertullian (ca.160 â€" ca.220 AD)

The Antichrist is a Christian concept based on interpretation of passages in the New Testament, in which the term "antichrist" occurs five times in 1 John and 2 John, once in plural form and four times in the singular.

In traditional Christian belief, Jesus the Messiah appears in his Second Coming to Earth, to face the emergence of the Antichrist figure. Just as Christ is the savior and the ideal model for humanity, his opponent in the End of Days will be a single figure of concentrated evil, according to Bernard McGinn.

The Cross of St. Peter or Petrine Cross is an inverted Latin cross traditionally used as a Christian symbol, but in recent times also used widely as an anti-Christian symbol.

there are just too many claims on who the antichrist is and when and where he was born; most claims are supported with perfect biblical quotations, most end up presenting their churches as the anti-antichrist.

As the war progressed, additional code words were added on and incorporated program-wide. In other instances, informal short-cut code words were devised for a particular campaign and not disseminated beyond the area of operation. To ensure a consistent use of code terminologies throughout the Pacific Theater, representative code talkers of each of the U.S. Marine divisions met in Hawaii to discuss shortcomings in the code, incorporate new terms into the system, and update their codebooks.

These representatives in turn trained other code talkers who could not attend the meeting. For example, the Navajo word for buzzard, jeeshóóʼ, was used for bomber, while the code word used for submarine, béésh Å,óóʼ, meant iron fish in Navajo. The last of the original 29 Navajo code talkers who developed the code, Chester Nez, died on June 4, 2014.

The deployment of the Navajo code talkers continued through the Korean War and after, until it was ended early in the Vietnam War.

A codebook was developed to teach the many relevant words and concepts to new initiates. The text was for classroom purposes only, and was never to be taken into the field. The code talkers memorized all these variations and practiced their rapid use under stressful conditions during training. Uninitiated Navajo speakers would have no idea what the code talkers' messages meant; they would hear only truncated and disjointed strings of individual, unrelated nouns and verbs.

The Navajo code talkers were commended for their skill, speed, and accuracy accrued throughout the war. At the Battle of Iwo Jima, Major Howard Connor, 5th Marine Division signal officer, had six Navajo code talkers working around the clock during the first two days of the battle. These six sent and received over 800 messages, all without error. Connor later stated, "Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima."

The first 29 Navajo recruits attended boot camp in May 1942. This first group then created the Navajo code at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California. The Navajo code was formally developed and modeled on the Joint Army/Navy Phonetic Alphabet that uses agreed-upon English words to represent letters.

As it was determined that phonetically spelling out all military terms letter by letter into wordsâ€"while in combatâ€"would be too time-consuming, some terms, concepts, tactics and instruments of modern warfare were given uniquely formal descriptive nomenclatures in Navajo (the word for "potato" being used to refer to a hand grenade, or "turtle" to a tank, for example). Several of these portmanteaus (such as gofasters referring to running shoes, ink sticks for pens) entered Marine Corps vocabulary and are commonly used today to refer to the appropriate objects.
#12762
Navajo was spoken only on the Navajo lands of the American Southwest, and its syntax and tonal qualities, not to mention dialects, made it unintelligible to anyone without extensive exposure and training. One estimate indicates that at the outbreak of World War II fewer than 30 non-Navajos could understand the language.

Early in 1942, Johnston met with Major General Clayton B. Vogel, the commanding general of Amphibious Corps, Pacific Fleet, and his staff. Johnston staged tests under simulated combat conditions which demonstrated that Navajos could encode, transmit, and decode a three-line English message in 20 seconds, versus the 30 minutes required by machines at that time. The idea was accepted, with Vogel recommending that the Marines recruit 200 Navajos.
#12763
time was when all US codes used during the war were cracked by the Japanese.

Philip Johnston, a civil engineer for the city of Los Angeles, proposed the use of Navajo to the United States Marine Corps at the beginning of World War II. Johnston, a World War I veteran, was raised on the Navajo reservation as the son of a missionary to the Navajos, and was one of the few non-Navajos who spoke their language fluently.

Because Navajo has a complex grammar, it is not nearly mutually intelligible enough with even its closest relatives within the Na-Dene family to provide meaningful information, and was at this time an unwritten language, Johnston saw Navajo as answering the military requirement for an undecipherable code.

The strips are usually 2 to 3.5 kilometres (1.2 to 2.2 mi) long straight sections of the highway, where any central reservation is made of crash barriers that can be removed quickly (in order to allow airplanes to use the whole width of the road), and other features of an airbase (taxiways, airport ramps) can be built.

The road will need a thicker than normal surface and a solid concrete base. The specialized equipment of a typical airfield are stored somewhere nearby and only carried there when airfield operations start. The highway strips can be converted from motorways to airbases typically within 24 to 48 hours. The road would need to be swept to remove all debris before any aircraft movement could take place.

In the case of Finnish road airbases, the space needed for landing aircraft is reduced by means of a wire, similar to the CATOBAR system used on some aircraft carriers.

A highway strip or road runway is a section of a highway or motorway that is specially built to allow landing of (mostly) military aircraft and to serve as a military airbase. These were built to allow military aircraft to operate even if their airbases, the most vulnerable targets in any war, are destroyed.

The first highway strips were constructed near the end of World War II in Nazi Germany, where the well developed Reichsautobahn system allowed aircraft to use the motorways.

In the Cold War highway strips were systematically built on both sides of the Iron Curtain, mostly in the two Germanys, but also in North Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Sweden, Switzerland, Poland and Czechoslovakia.

Ever wonder what an ostrich incubator looks like?

Bathurst Agricultural Museum has the answer.

Set up in 1970 to house old farming equipment, the museum now has more than 1,300 pieces on display, from ox wagons, old tractors and wagons to old dairy utensils and a steam engine.

4. Cheesy humor and kitsch memorabilia

Visitors encounter plenty of the village's cheesy humor.

An advertisement for the Pig and Whistle boasts: "There's no thirst like Bathurst." Meanwhile, the pub door is inscribed with a bon mot of its own: "Bathurst is a drinking village with a farming problem."

Inside, a wall is dedicated more wisecracks: "Marriage is a relationship in which one person is always right and the other is the husband."

A leftover from early settlers, this is British wit at its silliest -- the sort found on old school seaside postcards and one-liners that might've gotten a rise out of Benny Hill.

Souvenirs of these gags can be found at The Corner Art Gallery, which sells shirts that can be printed with the customer's name alongside the line "Instant Idiot -- just add alcohol."

The gallery also sells beautiful ceramics, art and fabric prints.

"It's a sleepy little town, but it really comes to life on a Sunday -- that's when the hippies come out," says resident Marcel Pullen who runs a pottery studio and shop with her husband.

Richard Pullen Open Studio is a pottery center and shop.

"People live here because they want to get away from it all and there are some really interesting people here, like the couple down the road that run the Dancing Donkey."

That would be paleontologist Rob Gess and his wife Serena, whose unusually named shop in a small thatched hut sells African arts and crafts made by local artisans, as well as Serena's own line of natural organic products.

3. Offbeat and eccentric stores

As a community of artists, academics and musicians, many residents say they were attracted by the village's creative spirit.

Some came for a weekend and never left.

The Coathanger, a retro and vintage clothing store specializing in "shabby chic," is one aamong a group of art galleries and craft shops with funky collections.

The store feels like a museum -- old suitcases are stacked beside a 1970s toaster alongside piles of vinyl records and "Boys Own" annuals dating to the 1950s.

Out front, the small lawn is bordered by lavender bushes and features a white ceramic toilet topped with a pair of black stilettos.

"The toilet? I'm going to plant strawberries in it," says owner Lindi Pieterse, as if it's the most obvious thing in the world.

2. South Africa's oldest pub

A pub is the focal point of Bathurst's history.

Built in 1832 by British settler Thomas Hartley, it was known as Widow Hartley's Inn after his death.

During World War II, a group of British RAF pilots decided it needed a cheerier moniker and renamed it the Pig and Whistle.

The "pig" refers to an old drinking peg, or unit of alcohol, and the "whistle" is a corruption of the word "wassail," meaning to drink and be merry.

Although the pub has changed hands many times, the name stuck and it remains the oldest continually licensed pub in South Africa.

The food is excellent, with fresh produce from neighboring farms.

1. World's Largest Pineapple

The town's quirky venues include a giant pineapple building and an agricultural museum

There's no missing the town's 17-meter-tall pineapple.

It's not as random as it seems.

The Big Pineapple represents the region's pineapple industry -- the settlers who arrived in the 1820s struggled to grow crops until the first pineapple was planted in 1865.

Inside today's three-story fiberglass pineapple there's a museum devoted to the fruit.

From the top there are great views of the surrounding pineapple fields and countryside.

Tractor farm tours and pineapple tastings are also available.

5 reasons Bathurst may be South Africa's most eccentric town

By Kate Whitehead, for CNN
May 29, 2014

(CNN) -- It's a village not a town.

So say residents of Bathurst, a magnet for the creative and curious located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, approximately 12 kilometers from Port Alfred.

Residents are proud of the eccentricity of their town.

Or village.

"You've got to have certain things to be a town, like a bank and full-time doctor, and we don't have any of that," says one longtime resident who gives her name only as Mrs. Lens.

Asia today therefore carries the seeds of a truly catastrophic episode of mutual misperception. Both Washington and China are steadily upping the stakes in their rivalry as China's provocations of US friends and allies become more flagrant and America's commitments to support them become more categorical.

Both believe they can do this with impunity because both believe the other will back down to avoid a clash. There is a disconcertingly high chance that they are both wrong.

Someone needs to change the nature of the game to avert the risk of disaster.

if this analysis is hitting the nail right on the head, then cry, asia, cry.
