Just last March of this year, another couple, Mohamad Al-Hafiz Nordin and his wife Nuraini Hassan was slapped with a total of 6 counts of physical abuses committed against 34-year old Yulianti from Indonesia. Both have pleaded guilty to the charge.

Yulianti accused the couple with slapping, beating, kicking and hitting her on numerous occasions. She was only able to escape her employers after climbing out of their third floor flat in Punggol, and jumping from the second floor to the ground. She lost 20 kilograms during her six-month ordeal, from February to August in 2012.

The husband is also accused of trying to bribe Fitriyah with a month’s salary and a plane ticket to Indonesia in exchange for not reporting the abuses to the Singaporean authorities.

They are also facing charges for violating the Ministry of Manpower working pass conditions.

Last year, Singapore is home to more than 200,000 foreign migrant workers, including Indonesians, Malaysians, Burmese, Vietnamese and Filipinos, but it has become notorious for maid abuses in recent years.
#12509
Meanwhile, the wife, Chia, faces 11 charges for allegedly slapping one of the maids and beating the other with a cane. The couple is also accused of forcing both Fitriyah and Than to slap each other.

Tay at one instance, was said to also have carried Than and threw her out of the bedroom. Other abuses the two domestic helpers allegedly suffered from the husband and wife include: making them strip and taking a photograph of them naked, forcing an incense bottle into the mouth of 32-year Fitriyah, pulling their hair, and forcing the 25-year old Than to the floor and stepping on her chest.

But the most serious incident was when the abusive wife supposedly forced sugar into Than’s throat using a funnel, and when the maid began to throw up, Chia forced her to swallow the vomit back.

the contents of that blood stained blog:

Filipino infestation in Singapore â€" 5 point guide to showing displeasure without breaking the law

Yes, the Filipinos have long overstayed their welcome, and they must be advised in no less clearer terms that we are growing intolerant of their presence. Then again, let’s do this through largely “peaceful”, non criminal means. We recommend pissing them off in the following ways:

1. Reject, and ask for replacement

If you encounter a Pinoy waiter/waitress or customer service officer, tell them this: “Could you kindly ask a Singaporean staff to speak to me? Your standard of English â€" there is much left to be desired.” If the idiot continues rambling on, tell him/her with a smile: ”Your English sucks, capisce? Get the f*** out of my uncaring face and find me someone else, pronto.”

2. Step on ‘em, push or shove ‘em

When the Peenoise get rowdy or obviously do not observe basic social decorum, a little “nudge” in the right direction won’t harm. Just make it look accidental. Pump your fist in victory later when they are out of your sight. We understand sometimes they just don’t get it, so a little more force must be employed. Like what this unsung hero did: ‘This morning at Bishan Circle Line MRT I pushed a Pinoy out of the train before door closes.’

3. Create an artistic mess on your plate when dining at Jollibee

Or any other Filipino themed restaurant/food outlet. Toss food into your mouth, chew thoroughly, then spit it out. Bite another morsel and repeat. Do this till your plate is a masterpiece of regurgitated nastiness. Ask for the bill (pay in cash), scribble “Pinoy food f***** tastes like shit” on the receipt and remember to leave that piece of paper behind.

4. Never render help when Filipinos are involved in serious traffic accidents

Stand on the side with your arms folded across your chest, peering curiously at the bloody set piece. Do not call the ambulance. But you have our permission to take photographs so they can be tweeted later with the caption: Hopefully another Pinoy has breathed his last on the little red dot. RIP.NOT.

5. Pray for a flood of biblical proportions to descend upon Orchard Road on 8 June

Go to the nearest church and pray. Pray hard for divine intervention aloud. Make sure God (and the Pinoy sitting next to you on the same bench) hears every word.

There will be no Noah’s Ark to save the partying Filipino motherfuckers when hell breaks loose, because Noah sure ain’t Pinoy when we last checked. Let’s watch them drown whilst eating popcorn on our HD TVs.

Edit: The event to celebrate Pinoy National Day has been called off. Glory to Jesus ! A-f*****-MEN!

6. ( bonus point) Actually this is our favourite.

If you see a Pinoy cashier at NTUC, Cold Storage or Giant, throw a can of Baygon into your shopping before approaching him/her to make payment. When the cashier picks up the insecticide spray ready to do a barcode scan, ask him/her wryly: ”Is this effective against Filipinos? Sorry, I meant cockroaches.“

Philippines asks Singapore to probe racist blog

By AP News Jun 19, 2014

The Philippines Embassy in Singapore complained about the blog. Pic: AP.

SINGAPORE (AP) â€" The Philippines has asked Singapore authorities to take action against a blog author who suggested Singaporeans should shove Filipinos on the street and be rude to Filipino workers.

The blog, titled “Filipino infestation in Singapore â€" 5 point guide to showing displeasure without breaking the law,” was posted at the end of May and has since been taken down. It was written anonymously and was widely shared on social media, prompting the Philippine Embassy in Singapore to appeal to the government for prompt action.

Police said they are investigating, according to local media reports, but gave no other details.

The incident points to growing intolerance toward migrant workers, who have largely built the wealthy city-state’s impressive skyline and transport infrastructure.

Google takes down anti-Filipino blog

By Camille Diola (philstar.com)
June 20, 2014

The racist blog has been taken down by Google following the Philippine government's statement against it. screencaps

MANILA, Philippines â€" It was Google itself that removed a blog with a post promoting hatred against Filipinos in Singapore, the technology company confirmed.

Google told the Malay Mail on Friday that the blog, Blood Stained Singapore, violated its community rules for Blogger where it is hosted. Blogger is a free service owned by Google.

The content policy states that blogs and content should not "cross the line by publishing hate speech."

"We mean content that promotes hate or violence towards groups based on race, ethnicity, religion, disability, gender, age, veteran status, or sexual orientation/gender identity. For example, don't write a blog saying that members of Race X are criminals or advocating violence against followers of Religion Y," Google's Blogger says.

In the Philippines, however, “temporary” usually means an indefinite timeframe. Many detainees have been living inside the custodial center for years.

The courts will have to decide where the accused in the scam will eventually be detained during the trial. The detainees can also request the court to allow their extended stay inside the custodial center if they feel they are unsafe elsewhere. â€" Rappler.com

Plunder charges against the 3 senators, alleged scam mastermind Janet Lim Napoles, and 5 others were filed before the Sandiganbayan on June 6. Graft charges, meanwhile, were filed on June 9.

The Sandiganbayan raffled the cases on June 13, but the arrest warrants may not come immediately given the number of legal remedies the accussed can take. Plunder is a non-bailable offense.

For instance, even before any warrants were issued, Enrile asked the Sandiganbayan to allow him to post bail, citing health concerns.

Ready as they are, Sindac emphasized that the custodial center is only a “temporary facility.” “This is not intended for the long haul.”

The rest of the accused â€" should they be ordered detained in the custodial center â€" would be placed in a different area.

‘Only temporary’

Other parts of the custodial center are sealed off from the officers’ quarters-turned -“pork barrel scam detention center.”

“Sa custodial service, iba’t bang areas kasi 'yan: may grupo ng terrorists, communist, 'yung sa Maguindanao, mga sa Witness Protection Program, kasama lahat 'yun. The groups cannot be mixed together,” said Sindac.

(We have several areas inside the custodial center: for the terrorists, the communists, those accused in the Maguindanao massacre, even those under the Witness Protection Program.)

BUNK BEDS. One of the 4 rooms has two bunk beds inside â€" with new foam mattresses to boot. Screenshot from Rappler footage

Earlier, police and Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II assured critics that the PNP will “act and perform professionally” in the arrest and detention of the 3 opposition senators allegedly involved in the illegal diversion of development funds.

Roxas is president-on-leave of the ruling Liberal Party and is seen as the party’s standard bearer in the 2016 presidential elections.

Sindac said room assignments would be based on court orders, but each room can comfortably house at least 2 single beds and 2 bunk beds. Sindac said up to 8 people can be accommodated in the complex.

Basic amenities

The area â€" which has yet to be assigned a code name â€" is still undergoing final touches. Inside 3 of the rooms are single beds, small side tables, private bathrooms, and a sink. Each room also has its own ceiling fan and a window secured by metal grills.

The fourth room has two bunk beds inside. All mattresses are brand new.

Visitors need to pass through 3 padlocked metal gates to get to the complex composed of 4 spacious rooms and one large “multipurpose area.”

PNP Public Information Office head Chief Superintendent Theodore Sindac said the complex was intended to be the quarters of the PNP Headquarters Support Service assigned to the custodial center. Plans changed with the impending arrest of over 54 people charged with plunder and graft over the pork barrel scam.

The complex inside the custodial center is made up of two cement structures. Between the two buildings are 4 outdoor sinks; outside, concrete pavement where detainees could go for a stretch.

Senators' detention center in Camp Crame

The special jail awaiting 3 senators and others charged for plundering their pork barrel is not exactly the most welcoming and comfortable of places

Bea Cupin
Jun 20, 2014

MANILA, Philippines â€" The exact day for the arrest of 3 senators charged with plunder remain a guessing game, but their special jail at the central police camp in Quezon City is ready for them anytime.

It’s not exactly the most welcoming and comfortable of places.

On Monday, June 16, the Philippine National Police (PNP) took journalists on a guided tour of the detention centers that senators Ramon Revilla Jr, Juan Ponce Enrile, and Jinggoy Estrada will occupy should the anti-graft court order them transferred there.

All eyes, though, are on the "senior statesman" of the 3: the 90-year-old Enrile.

Enrile could escape prison because of humanitarian reasons. But the feisty former Senate president said he’s all packed and ready to go. Enrile’s possible detention in Camp Crame is ironic, given his role during the Marcos dictatorship.

As defense minister, Enrile had supervision over the country's armed forces which included the Philippine Constabulary, a military force tasked with policing duties. Based in Camp Crame, the Philippine Constabulary was abolished under the Ramos administration to make way for the PNP.

High-profile or not, Sindac insisted all detainees are considered equal inside the PNP Custodial Center. "Wala kaming special treatment," he declared. â€" Rappler.com

Sindac said those charged in the pork barrel scam won't necessarily be mingling with other detainees, explaining that those jailed in Crame are grouped accordingly. For instance, he said, "you can't mix the former generals and other detainees."

No strangers to Crame

Estrada said during a privilege speech delivered on Wednesday, June 11, that he would not evade arrest. He is no stranger to arrests and Camp Crame.

Thirteen years ago, his father, former president and now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada was taken and booked in Crame for plunder charges.

The younger Estrada was also accused of plunder but was later acquitted.

According to human rights group Karapatan, the following are still detained at the custodial center:

    Dionisio Almonte
    Gloria Almonte
    Ramon Argente
    Lorraine Castillo
    Joel Enano
    Renante Gamara
    Jeosi Nepa
    Arlene Panea
    Eduardo Serrano
    Rex Villamor

Dismissed police superintendent Hansel Marantan and several other PNP personnel accused of orchestrating a summary execution in Atimonan, Quezon are also detained in the custodial center. Rizal Alih, who faces charges for the 1989 siege of Camp Cawa-Cawa, has been detained in Crame since 2006.

Other “famous” detainees are: several suspects in the grisly Maguindanao massacre; former election supervisor Lintang Bedol, infamous for his involvement in the “Hello Garci” scandal; former PNP chief Avelino Razon Jr for malversation charges; and former PNP comptrollers Geary Barias and Eliseo de la Paz, also for malversation charges.

But the rest of the kakosas of Enrile, Revilla and Estrada are a diverse bunch â€" from alleged communist leaders, suspended PNP personnel to former officials also accused of corruption.

The most recent and highly-publicized of detainees are National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) consultants Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, who were nabbed by police on March 22, 2014. Police and the military, insist, however, that the two are top Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) leaders.

‘Kakosa'

Enrile, Revilla, and Estrada aren’t exactly dreading their possible arrest.

Months ago, during Estrada’s birthday celebration, Revilla jokingly referred to Estrada as his “kakosa” or jail mate. He again made the same joke during a thank-you privilege speech punctuated by a video presentation before the Senate on June 9.

The humor may come in handy if they are detained in the custodial center, which can accomodate up to 130 detainees. Sindac said that at present, over 70 detainees are in the jail.

This means the Crame jail can accommodate the 3 senators and all of the respondents in the plunder and graft cases filed before the Sandiganbayan. Napoles, the alleged mastermind of the scam, is already detained at a PNP camp in Laguna for allegedly kidnapping former-aide-turned-scam-whistleblower Benhur Luy.

Sindac said the Custodial center compound has several buildings, although he declined to disclose how many exactly, for security reasons. Each building is named according to the phonetic alphabet: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, and so on.

What sets the custodial center apart from other regular jails? Sindac said not a lot, except for the “high level of security.”

He admitted, however, that jail management and penology isn’t exactly the PNP’s expertise. In the Philippines, jails are run by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), which, like the PNP, is administered by the Interior and Local Government department.

“We’re not BJMP, so we aren’t really trained for jail duties. If anything, we’re more paranoid about security,” he added.

The 3 senators, businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles, and 5 others face plunder raps for allegedly stealing millions of pesos in Priority Development Assistance Funds (PDAF) or pork barrel through bogus projects and fake non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Plunder is a non-bailable offense.

Graft charges have also been filed against the 3 senators, Napoles and more individuals before the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan.

‘Custodial center ready’

The detention center, according to various media reports, has been renovated â€" but not necessarily for the purpose of detaining the 3 senators. According to PNP PIO head Chief Superintendent Theodore Sindac, there are 56 cells inside the Crame jail.

The space offered detainees isn’t too shabby â€" 3 meters by 3 meters. Still, it’s a far cry from the P120-million house Estrada is having built in the posh Wack-Wack subdivision or Revilla’s P100-million mansion inside Ayala Alabang.

What awaits Senators Enrile, Revilla, and Estrada at their possible detention center in Camp Crame?

MANILA, Philippines â€" It’s a stark contrast to the multi-million peso mansions they call home.

There are no special amenities to speak of, not even air-conditioning. Instead they’ll get a double-deck bed with mattresses, a “basic toilet,” a water faucet, and a pail plus dipper. (CARTOON: Jailhouse blues for 3 VIPs)

If and when Senators Juan Ponce Enrile, Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr, and Jose "Jinggoy" Estrada are served their arrest warrants and whisked off to jail, it's highly likely they'll be detained at the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

Revilla, a former governor of Cavite, is one of three opposition senators tagged in the so-called P10 billion pork barrel scam allegedly masterminded by Janet Lim Napoles. He is accused of amassing P242 million from his priority development assistance funds.

The senator has denied the charges, saying he does not need to steal public funds.

"I can get the money from my own films. My movies are always number one or number two," he said in an ANC interview.

He blamed a "syndicate" in government, involving officials of implementing agencies and the Commission on Audit, for perpetrating the scam.

On Friday, Revilla's supporters in Cavite held mass and prayed for the senator before his surrender.

Revilla and his family also stopped by St. Michael's Parish in Bacoor before proceeding to the Sandiganbayan.

Revilla said he decided to surrender to the anti-graft court to spare his family the spectacle of his arrest. This is after the Sandiganbayan issued a warrant Friday morning.

MANILA (UPDATED) - Sen. Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. surrendered to the Sandiganbayan Friday morning after being slapped with graft and plunder charges for alleged misuse of public funds.

"I am innocent of the charges. I am just a victim of dirty politics," he said in an interview before his surrender.

It was a long journey to surrender for Revilla, who first made his name as an action star before turning his eye on politics.

Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic scored his team’s third goal on a header.

In the second half, Cameroon simply imploded. Croatia scored three goals to make the final score 4-0, and it could easily have been twice that many as the Cameroonian defense fell apart. By the end of the game, one Cameroon player was head-butting another.

ImagesCroatia’s Ivan Perisic scored early in the second half.

Croatia will now face Mexico in its final match of the group, and they will likely need another win if they hope to advance. The Croatians will surely face stronger resistance than they did today. Still, they will take heart from Madzukic's return. He scored two goals today, and was a constant danger, especially on set pieces.

Ivan Perisic also starred for the Croats, setting up Olic for the first goal and scoring the second himself.

World Cup 2014: Croatia Defeats Cameroon, 4-0

By IAN LOVETT

Croatia is still alive and Cameroon is out of the World Cup after a very one-sided encounter in Manaus.

Croatia took an early lead through Ivica Olic, but it remained a tight contest until Alex Song lost his cool and inexplicably lashed out at Mario Mandzukic late in the first half, punching him from behind as they ran up the field. Song was rightly shown a red card, leaving Cameroon down a goal and a man, and without any real hope.

It’s tough to lose like this (and to not one but two formerly Spanish-dominated nations, by the way, though the king won’t say it), but life goes on.

http://www.ibtimes.com/
#12554
Casillas was quoted by the paper as saying, “I demand forgiveness from the people.” The paper’s sports writer in charge of live-blogging the match caught the spirit perfectly: “Sad night, but you have to get up and think of the future. Life goes on. A strong hug to everybody,” Rafael Pineda signed off.

El fútbol is that serious a deal, yes. And the new king of the Spaniards, knowing well who his subjects are, may very well mention in his coronation speech Thursday a sentiment similar to what Pineda wrote. Felipe VI, meeting the press on Wednesday, asked half-jokingly if the journalists had  any ideas for the speech -- and it’s hard to imagine that the new king’s advisors will not tell him to talk constructively about the defeat, and a future rebirth, as a metaphor that a nation coming out of a dire economic crisis could use as inspiration.
#12555
“That was good while it lasted, but everything ends in life,” Marca said of the national team’s cycle of domination (it won the 2012 European championship as well). And because you can’t have a World Cup without vaguely war-related metaphors, the newspaper noted the match had been “a national agony.”

The country’s newspaper of record, El País, was more composed in its reaction, simply saying in its main headline on the Web: “Spain out of the World Cup after falling to Chile.” But even the normally subdued País could not avoid words commensurate with the magnitude of the loss: It was “a calamitous effort,” “the nightmare of Brazil,” and, again, “the most complete ridicule.”
#12556
The significance of such a humiliation -- seven goals to one scored in two matches, an enormity in soccer -- was not lost on the Spanish press, which reacted emotionally. The biggest sports daily in the nation, Marca, went with a simple one-word headline: Crashed! and put it over a picture of goalkeeper and team capitain Iker Casillas staring forlornly into space, while a teammate hides his face under his jersey. The story itself was just as harsh, accusing the outgoing champions of having shown the world “another unbelievable ridicule,” a merciless reference to the five-goal drubbing suffered from the Dutch.

“It’s a sad goodbye,” Marca said, adding  that the team of coach Vicente del Bosque had given “a very poor image.” The squad “screams for a generational change,” read the story -- and that was just the front page summary.

It’s only the fourth time in the soccer World Cup’s 84-year history that a defending champion goes home unceremoniously after an elimination in the first round. And Spain had gone to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup as a favorite, widely thought to be in a good position to defend the 2010 title it won in South Africa. On Wednesday, Spain should have been celebrating a victory against the far less vaunted Chilean team.

Instead, the Spaniards are out of the cup. Not even a lopsided victory next week in their third and final match, against Australia, would net them enough points to advance to the round of 16. They are now dead last in their group of four. The Chileans, who had won their first match against Australia by 3-1 last week, are already sure of advancing --  as is the fourth team in the group, the Netherlands, which humiliated Spain 5-1 last week and then beat Australia 3-2.

Spanish Press Reacts To Elimination, 2-0 Loss To Chile: 'Unbelievable Ridicule'

This week ought to be a time of celebration for Spain. King Felipe VI is being crowned Thursday, after the official abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos I, on Wednesday. But instead, the country will be thinking about something else that happened on Wednesday -- something that will also go down in the history books, but for a far less joyous reason: Spain’s early elimination from the World Cup after a 2-0 loss to Chile.

France (2002)

A shock 1-0 defeat to Senegal in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan showed a sign of things to come for France. After their incredible 3-0 win over Brazil in 1998, the weight of expectation proved to be too much for the reigning champions. They ended the tournament winless after being defeated by Denmark and a goalless draw with Uruguay which saw Thierry Henry infamously sent off.

Italy (2010)

A group that Italy were more than capable of getting out of turned into their worst nightmare as Marcelo Lippi's side were eliminated from the World Cup. Their opponents - Paraguay, Slovakia and debutants New Zealand - surprised the Azzurri, with the latter side picking up a 1-1 draw. A 3-2 defeat to Slovakia compounded Italy's exit, although France's equal level of underachievement meant that Italy's poor showing went somewhat under the radar.

Here are the other nations who went from the highest of highs to humiliation within two tournaments.

Italy (1950)

The Italians won the 1938 World Cup but, due to World War II, were unable to defend their crown until 12 years later. And even then, they were severely weakened by the fact that some members of their squad were killed in the Superga air disaster the year before the tournament started. They were put in a group with Paraguay, Sweden and India (who later withdrew), and lost their opening game 3-2 to Sweden, who went through.

Brazil (1966)

Even with the likes of Pele and Tostao in the side, Brazil could not live up to the expectations of them and subsequently failed to make it past the group stages in the 1966 World Cup. Their group, containing Hungary, Portugal and Bulgaria, was one filled with goals, and Brazil's 3-1 defeat to Portugal condemned them to failure in England, who went on to win their first and only World Cup.

After their historic 1-0 win over the Netherlands four years ago in South Africa, La Roja experienced humiliation of the highest level after shock defeats to the Netherlands and Chile.

Many have commented that it is the end of 'tiki-taka' as we know it, but Spain are certainly not the first and won't be the last to relinquish their crown at the first attempt of defending it.

In fact, Spain join two other nations in the 21st Century who have crashed out at the group stage the tournament after winning the World Cup - France in 2002 and Italy in 2010.

But Spain are the only champions to have lost their first two games the tournament after winning it.

Adios España: Chile knock holders off their perch

Miguel Delaney
Wednesday 18 June 2014

Iker Casillas looks on in despair

Too tired, too slow and too few points. Spain’s World Cup is over, and an era ends. Vicente Del Bosque’s team have become only the fifth defending champions in history to go out in the group stage, but the first the lose their opening two games and thereby the quickest to ever go home.

They are also the first team eliminated from the 2014 tournament. That sums up the scale of the fall almost as much as the poverty of their play. Chile, as they promised before the game, have made history.

The South Americans also consigned Spanish dominance to the past with a display that brilliantly outpaced their famous philosophy and made it look brutally outdated.

Jacques Derrida

Via weimarart.blogspot.com

Celebrated postmodern French philosopher Jacques Derrida developed a form of analysis known as “deconstruction,” which involved the assertion that all writing was full of confusion because of the inherent contradictions of language itself. Deconstruction requires thinking in a dual way about everything, analyzing and breaking down the conceptual opposites in language, art, and, ethics. In the ’90s, Derrida’s work took a turn towards ethics, such as in The Gift of Death, when he began to apply the principles of deconstructionism in interpreting passages from the bible. Derrida wrote in a paper in 1993 that “deconstruction, if there is such a thing, takes place as the experience of the impossible.”

Jacques Derrida was â€" unsurprisingly to anyone who has pieced together a semblance of an understanding of both deconstructionism and cats â€" a cat person. He wrote extensively of the feline gaze in an essay (originally delivered as a ten-hour lecture) titled The Animal That Therefore I Am (More to Follow)’. The essay focuses on a moment when a “real cat, truly, believe me, a little cat” catches the philosopher in the bathroom as he steps out of the shower and ‘stares’ at him, which causes Derrida to question the logic and ethics of establishing or assuming a boundary that distinguishes the human from the animal. He wrote at the end of that lecture “The same question then becomes whether I should show myself but in the process see myself naked (that is reflect my image in a mirror) when, concerning me, looking at me, is this living creature, this cat that can find itself caught in the same mirror? Is there animal narcissism? But cannot this cat also be, deep within her eyes, my primary mirror?”

Samuel Johnson

A statue in tribute to Johnson’s beloved cat, Hodge. Via katherinebarber.blogspot.com

Devout Anglican and English author Samuel Johnson wrote poetry, essays, criticisms, and published A Dictionary of the English Language in 1755, described as “one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship.” Johnson was also very famous for his critical philosophy, and his belief that the best poetry relied on contemporary language (as opposed to purposefully old-timey/decorative verse). He was also the subject of perhaps the most famous biography of all time, James Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson, which is among the works that have described Johnson’s odd tics and gestures in such a way that has led to a posthumous diagnosis of Tourette syndrome.

In Boswell’s biography of Johnson, he describes the great thinker’s relationship with his cat, Hodge. “Nor would it be just, under this head, to omit the fondness which he showed for animals which he had taken under his protection. I never shall forget the indulgence with which he treated Hodge, his cat: for whom he himself used to go out and buy oysters, lest the servants having that trouble should take a dislike to the poor creature. I am, unluckily, one of those who have an antipathy to a cat, so that I am uneasy when in the room with one; and I own, I frequently suffered a good deal from the presence of this same Hodge. I recollect him one day scrambling up Dr. Johnson’s breast, apparently with much satisfaction, while my friend smiling and half-whistling, rubbed down his back, and pulled him by the tail; and when I observed he was a fine cat, saying, ‘Why yes, Sir, but I have had cats whom I liked better than this;’ and then as if perceiving Hodge to be out of countenance, adding, ‘but he is a very fine cat, a very fine cat indeed.’”

Patricia Highsmith

Via redredshoes.blogspot.com

Patricia Highsmith, 1921-1995, wrote widely-acclaimed psychological thrillers, including Strangers On A Train, famously adapted by Alfred Hitchcock in 1951, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. The protagonist/serial murderer in the latter, Tom Ripley, was featured in four more novels by Highsmith, known as the ‘Ripliad.’

Highsmith was an animal lover who kept pets of both cats and hundreds of pet snails. Urich Weber, the curator of Highsmith’s archive, once explained that “she was very happy among cats. They gave her a closeness that she could not bear in the long-term from people. She needed cats for her psychological balance.”

Argentine novelist, essayist, and short story writer Julio Cortázar has been called “a modern master of the short story” and was known as one of the founders of the ‘Latin American Boom’ that brought latin literature to a much broader audience in Europe and America â€" a movement which also included Gabriel García Márquez, Carlos Fuentes, Jorge Luis Borges, and Pablo Neruda. Cortázar was known for his use of interior monologue and stream of consciousness, and he was interested in surrealist art, and improvisatory jazz. His most famous novel is Hopscotch.

Cortázar was a cat lover who owned a cat named Theodor W. Adorno who he wrote about extensively in the book Around the Day in Eighty Worlds.

Non-fiction author, environmental activist, and novelist Peter Matthiessen is perhaps best known for a book that is sort of about cats â€" but not of the household variety. His book The Snow Leopard, about a journey in the company of zoologist George Schaller into the heart of the Himalayas, seeking the snow leopard, a creature so rarely spotted as to be nearly mythical. Journalist/writer/editor/actor George Plimpton co-founded the Paris Review and was particularly well known for his immersive take on sports writing, often involving himself competing in professional sporting events and then recording the event. He pitched an exhibition game for the American League, on a team managed by Mickey Mantle, attended pre-season training and played in a scrimmage for the Detroit Lions of the NFL, trained in a National Hockey League preseason game as a goalie, and sparred for three rounds with Sugar Ray Robinson while working for Sports Illustrated.

Truman Capote

writersandkitties.tumblr.com

Truman Capote, American author of short stories, novels, nonfiction, and plays â€" including Breakfast At Tiffany’s and the true-crime novel In Cold Blood. He was a great friend of author Harper Lee and they often helped one another on projects, including Capote serving as inspiration for the character Dill in To Kill A Mockingbird. Capote was openly homosexual and an active socialite. Gore Vidal was quoted as saying “Truman Capote has tried, with some success, to get into a world that I have tried, with some success, to get out of.”

Although Capote’s own cat love isn’t well documented, the nameless feline in Breakfast At Tiffany’s plays a major part in the heart of the story. Holly sums up the novella nicely with the quote “If I could find a real-life place that made me feel like Tiffany’s, then I’d buy some furniture and give the cat a name.”

Via revistapolichinelo.blogspot.com

“She was still hugging the cat. “Poor slob,” she said, tickling his head, “poor slob without a name. It’s a little inconvenient, his not having a name. But I haven’t any right to give him one: He’ll have to wait until he belongs to somebody. We just sort of hooked up by the river one day, we don’t belong to each other. He’s an independent, and so am I. I don’t want to own anything until I know I’ve found a place where me and things belong together.”

But van Persie followed up his brace against Spain with another effort, before Depay finished the match with 22 minutes to go, scoring from a 20-yard effort which keeper Mathew Ryan should have done better with.

Australia, without a point, are just about out and will miss Cahill for their final match with Spain having picked up his second booking of the tournament - Van Persie will also miss the final round of group games having done the same.

Tim Cahill's wonderstrike was not enough for the Socceroos as Louis van Gaal's men won a see-saw game in Porto Alegre

Arjen Robben of the Netherlands shoots and scores his team's first goal past goalkeeper Mathew Ryan of Australia

Holland followed up their huge win over Spain with a more modest, but just as thrilling, victory over Australia to take full control of Group B.

The Dutch move onto six points and are just about guaranteed a place in the last 16 after goals from Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and the winner from Memphis Depay.

William Carlos Williams

writersandkitties.tumblr.com

Poet and doctor William Carlos Williams “worked harder at being a writer than he did at being a physician,” but miraculously managed both. He began as a member of the Imagist movement, a group of poets in the early 20th century who were devoted to “clarity of expression through the use of precise visual images.” Later, he experimented with new techniques and influences, eventually settling on a unique personal style that centered on the daily life of ‘common’ people.

“Outside, the north wind, coming and passing, swelling and dying, lifts the frozen sand drives it a-rattle against the lidless windows and we may dear sit stroking the cat stroking the cat and smiling sleepily, prrrr.”

Raymond Chandler

diario.latercera.com

Raymond Chandler got his start as a writer at age 44, after being fired from his oil company job during the Depression. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939 and introduced the first-person narrator / detective Philip Marlowe, who would become famous and be featured in many of Chandler’s later books. He continued to publish shorts stories and novels throughout the ’40s and ’50s, but also began collaborating on screenplays including Double Indemnity, Strangers on a Train, and The Blue Dahlia.

Chandler was an avid cat fancier who often wrote about his cats and even wrote letters as his cat, Taki. An excerpt (Taki writing to one of Chandler’s friend’s feline companions): “Come around sometime when your face is clean and we shall discuss the state of the world, the foolishness of humans, the prevalence of horsemeat, although we prefer the tenderloin side of a porterhouse, and our common difficulty in getting doors opened at the right time and meals served at more frequent intervals. I have got my staff up to five a day, but there is still room for improvement.”

Raymond Chandler’s agent H.N. Swanson, said that Chandler’s cat “‘knew more about him than anybody else.”

Colette

Via certosino.wordpress.com

Colette was a French novelist, most famous for her novel Gigi, which was adapted even more famously for stage and screen. She was also notoriously sensuous, having numerous affairs with both women and men, including her second husband’s son. She also “discovered” Audrey Hepburn when she cast the then unknown actress on sight to play the lead in Gigi after she saw her walking across the lobby of a hotel.

She has also been described as “the original Cat Woman,” and had a lifelong love affair with cats. She also loved dogs, after growing up surrounded by animals brought to the house by her mother, who “boasted of her ability to housebreak pets and children.” Colette wrote a novel entitled “The Cat,” which is about the engagement and honeymoon of a couple who is divided over the man’s helpless devotion to his cat, Saha. Colette’s cat lover, Alain, muses in the book “It wasn’t just a little cat I was carrying at that moment,” Alain mused. “It was the incarnate nobility of the whole cat race, her limitless indifference, her tact, her bond of union with the human aristocrat.”

Tove Jansson

writersandkitties.tumblr.com

Finnish author, illustrator, and comic-strip author Tove Jansson is best known for her Moomin series of books for children and comic strips, which feature sweet, nature and adventure loving, whimsically illustrated creatures populating their own Moomin-world. She also wrote several books for adults, including The Summer Book, about a six-year-old girl living with her grandmother on a tiny island in the gulf of Finland.

Via madonna.blox.pl

An excerpt from The Cat,, a chapter from The Summer Book by Tove Jansson:

“It was a tiny kitten when it came and could drink its milk only from a nipple. Fortunately, they still had Sophia’s baby bottle in the attic. In the beginning, the kitten slept in a tea cozy to keep warm, but when it found its legs they let it sleep in the cottage in Sophia’s bed. It had its own pillow, next to hers.

It was a gray fisherman’s cat and it grew fast. One day, it left the cottage and moved into the house, where it spent its nights under the bed in the box where they kept the dirty dishes. It had odd ideas of its own even then. Sophia carried the cat back to the cottage and tried as hard as she could to ingratiate herself, but the more love she gave it, the quicker it fled back to the dish box. When the box got too full, the cat would howl and someone would have to wash the dishes. Its name was Ma Petite, but they called it Moppy.

“It’s funny about love,” Sophia said. “The more you love someone, the less he likes you back.”

“That’s very true,” Grandmother observed. “And so what do you do?”

“You go on loving,” said Sophia threateningly. “You love harder and harder.”

Edith Södergran was a Swedish-speaking Finnish poet, and one of the first modernists in Swedish literature. Edith was just 24 when she released her first collection of poems, Dikter. She died at age 31 after complications from the tuberculosis she contracted as a teenager.

“Of all our sunny world
I wish only for a garden sofa
where a cat is sunning itself.

There I should sit
with a letter at my breast,
a single small letter.
That is what my dream looks like.”

Edward Gorey, known for his macabre, gothic illustrated books including The Gashlycrumb Tinies and The Doubtful Guest, as well as for illustrating for others’ books such as T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

Gorey’s personal diaries were feline-focused from a young age; one which dates back to March 20, 1938, reads “Kittens OK! Kittens 11 days old. Tiger kitten has one eye open. Awful cute.”

“It would be wrong to say that cats weren’t his first love,” said Ken Morton, Gorey’s cousin. “[Edward] said a few times that he liked cats more than people. He considered them his family.”

Jack Kerouac

Via posterrevolution.com

Jack Kerouac, author of On The Road, was a poet and novelist who was a pioneer of the “beat generation” and was famous for his spontaneous, free-flowing style and autobiographical honesty. He was an underground celebrity during his tragically short life (he died at age 47 of internal bleeding due to alcohol abuse), and has been a hero to teenagers and iconoclasts ever since.

writersandkitties.tumblr.com

Jack also loved cats, especially his cat Tyke, whose unfortunate passing he wrote about in loving detail in his memoir Big Sur.

“The next sign is in Frisco itself where after a night of perfect sleep in an old skid row hotel room I go to see Monsanto at his City Lights bookstore and he’s smiling and glad to see me, says ‘We were coming out to see you next weekend you should have waited,’ but there something else in his expression â€" When we’re alone he says, ‘Your mother wrote and said your cat is dead.’

Ordinarily the death of a cat means little to most men, a lot to fewer men, but to me, and that cat, it was exactly and no lie and sincerely like the death of my little brother â€" I loved Tyke with all my heart, he was my baby who as a kitten just slept in the palm of my hand and with his little head hanging down, or just purring for hours, just as long as I held him that way, walking or sitting â€" He was like a floppy fur wrap around my wrist, I just twist him around my wrist or drape him and he just purred and purred and even when he got big I still held him that way, I could even hold that big cat in both hands with my arms outstretched right over my head and he’d just purr, he had complete confidence in me â€" and when I’d left New York to come to my retreat in the woods I’d carefully kissed him and instructed him to wait for me ‘Attends pour mue kitigingoo’ â€" But my mother said in the letter he had died the NIGHT AFTER I LEFT.”

Jean Paul Sartre

writersandkitties.tumblr.com

Existentialist philosopher and author Jean Paul Sartre was a key figure in Marxism and 20th century french philosophy whose main thrust was that humans are “condemned to be free.” He did not believe that humans had a creator, and thought that we were fully responsible for our actions â€" “we are left alone, without excuse.”

Although Sartre’s relationship with cats isn’t well-documented, he is seen above holding a very handsome feline while at work. Sartre was also one of the obvious inspirations for Henri, the existential cat, and it is thought possible that all cats are, by nature, existentialists.

Horror, fantasy, and science-fiction author Stephen King has written 49 novels, nine collections of short stories, and five non-fiction books. He is also well-known for the many films based on his work, including The Shining, Stand By Me, and Pet Semetary. Despite once writing in a short story that “it might be that the biggest division in the world isn’t men and women but folks who like cats and folks who like dogs,” it seems that the King family does in fact keep both cats and dogs as pets. Note that the cat in these (awesome) photos is wearing a name tag that reads “Clovis,” the name used in King’s screenplay Sleepwalkers for a cat who [spoilers] saves the day.
