DRT

The Satanic group isn't so much an organized religious body filled with rites and rituals as it is a rabble-rousing crew of political activists who see Satan as a "literary construct" as opposed to a real, hoofed figure.

Oklahoma lawmakers don't think the statue will fly in a heavily religious state where nearly 70 percent of the population is Christian.

"Any monument displayed on state property should reflect the values of Oklahoma or memorialize those who built or defended our freedom," Rep. Bob Cleveland told CNN on Tuesday. "In my opinion this Satanist monument does not meet with the values of Oklahomans."

Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves argues the statue reflects the views of Satanists in Oklahoma City and throughout the state and would serve as a monument to their beliefs. It could be used for other purposes too.

"The statue will also have a functional purpose as a chair where people of all ages may sit on the lap of Satan for inspiration and contemplation," Greaves said in a statement.

No new monuments can be placed on the lawn until the lawsuit is settled, but The Satanic Temple better watch out: PETA, a Hindu group and the elusive Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster have all requested a spot near the Capitol, too.

It's worth noting that The Satanic Temple is the same group that organized a "pink mass" over the grave of a Westboro Baptist Church leader's mother last July, with the intent of turning her "gay for all eternity"â€"a clear jab at Westboro's threats to protest funerals for Boston Marathon victims, as well as the host of other offensive actions the church has taken.

The Kansas-based Westboro group has picketed LGBT events, with children holding hateful signs bearing anti-gay slurs, and attended funerals for the dead to harass the grieving with its wing-nut ideology.

The American Civil Liberties Union was awestruck by the "self-evidently exclusive" Ten Commandments monument approved by the state legislature in 2009 and filed a lawsuit in August 2013. The ACLU argues that because the statue is the only one of its kind on the north lawn, it “supports and endorses the faiths and creeds of some churches and sects.”

The Satanic Temple believes that placing another statue by that monument would allay the ACLU’s concerns.

"By accepting our offer, the good people of Oklahoma City will have the opportunity to show that they espouse the basic freedoms spelled out in the Constitution," the group writes on its campaign page.

"We imagine that the ACLU will also embrace such a response. Allowing us to donate a monument would show that the Oklahoma City Council does not discriminate, and both the religious and non-religious should be happy with such an outcome. Our mission is to bring people together by finding common sentiments that create solutions that everyone can appreciate and enjoy."

Satanists Raise $20K to Erect a Devil Statue Next to the Ten Commandments
Their horned goat would share land with Oklahoma's biblical monument.

January 10, 2014 By Sarah Parvini

If Christians can construct a monument to the Ten Commandments on the lawn of the Oklahoma State Capitol, why can't Satanists erect a statue of a horned goat ensconced on his pentagram-adorned throne, ready to counsel the children who seek his advice?

At least, that's what The Satanic Temple is asking.

The New York-based Satanist group revealed the designs for its not-so-subtle statueâ€"a "goat-headed Baphomet," to be exactâ€"on Tuesday and has already exceeded its $20,000 fundraising goal in an Indiegogo campaign to establish a monument to "complement and contrast" the Ten Commandments monument that sits on the lawn.

Everything But Arms (EBA)

This EU trade strategy was approved in 2001 and was designed to help some of the world’s poorest countries develop their economies. Under the scheme, the Union agreed to grant duty-free and quota-free access to the EU’s internal market to all products from the world’s 48 least developed countries. The only exception to this rule was the arms trade, hence the initiative’s name. Supporters of the scheme say that it shows the Union is leading the way in efforts to create a fairer global trading system. -- http://esharp.eu/

Nigeria bomb blast kills 72 in capital city Abuja
President Goodluck Jonathan blames Boko Haram, an Islamic extremist group that threatened attack
The Associated Press
Posted: Apr 14, 2014 5:46 AM ET Last Updated: Apr 14, 2014 8:32 PM ET

Suspected Islamic militants struck in the heart of Nigeria on Monday with a massive rush-hour bomb blast at a bus station that killed at least 72 people and wounded 164 in the deadliest attack ever on the nation's capital.

Survivors screamed in anguish and the stench of burning fuel and flesh hung over the area, where billows of black smoke rose as firefighters worked to put out the fires. Rescue workers and police gathered body parts as ambulances rushed the wounded to hospitals.

Visiting the blast scene, President Goodluck Jonathan blamed Boko Haram, the homegrown terrorist network that has targeted schools, churches, mosques, villages and government facilities, killing thousands in its five-year campaign to make Nigeria an Islamic state.

Authorities said at least 72 people were killed and 164 wounded, though the death toll was sure to climb because it did not include victims whose bodies were dismembered, the health ministry said. It was the deadliest attack yet in Abuja, the centrally located capital that is hundreds of miles from Boko Haram's stronghold in Nigeria's northeast.

West was released from a federal prison in California in January and transferred to a halfway house in Salt Lake City, said Chris Burke, spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Neighbor Sharon Chipman said the couple married young, and Huntsman never worked except for a short stint at a grocery store.

The three daughters who were living in the house were good young women who have turned out remarkably well considering their father has been in prison, Chipman and Wall said.

Cheryl Meyer, a psychology professor at Ohio's Wright State University, said some women who kill their children hide or deny their pregnancy and then dispose of the baby after it's born. Meyer said "concealers" are typically teenagers who do not repeat the act.

"These are usually girls who are 17, get pregnant, become scared to death and don't want to tell their parents," said Meyer, who has written about mothers who kill their children. "They're not 30-year-old women who can go have an abortion."

To combat this, all states, including Utah, have safe haven laws that allow women to drop off unwanted newborns to authorities with no questions asked. The mother can remain anonymous as long as the child has not been subject to abuse or neglect.

In coming days, defense attorneys for Huntsman are likely to closely examine her background to search for any evidence of mental illness or a family history that would help explain the alleged killings, said George Parnham, who represented Andrea Yates, the Texas woman who drowned her five children in her bathtub in 2001.

Defense attorneys also will try to determine whether Huntsman sought an abortion and if she told anyone about her pregnancies â€" all in hopes of understanding actions that otherwise appear incomprehensible, Parnham said.

"You start off with the very nature of what happened. Is there a rational motive?" he said. (AP)

Police have talked with West as they investigate his level of knowledge and involvement in the deaths, Smith said. He was living in the house during the decade that authorities believe Huntsman had killed the babies, Smith said.

He's been cooperative, and was devastated by the discovery, he said.

Smith said the three daughters have been interviewed, but he declined to discuss what they said.

West pleaded guilty in federal court in 2005 to two counts of possessing chemicals intended to be used in manufacturing methamphetamine, according to court records. In August 2006, he was sentenced to 9 years in prison, but appealed three times. He maintained his innocence and said he never had any intention to manufacture meth.

Huntsman wrote a letter asking a federal judge to consider leniency at sentencing.

"Darren is a remarkable man, husband, brother, son, son-in-law, friend and father of our three beautiful daughters," she wrote, continuing, "Please we need this guy to keep our family together."
#12520
Her estranged husband, Darren West, who had recently been in prison on drug-related charges, made the discovery Saturday with fellow family members while cleaning out the garage of the house, which is owned by his parents. He called Huntsman, who admitted to him it was her baby, according to court documents.

West called police, who then found the six other bodies in the garage, police Capt. Michael Roberts said.

Late Sunday, West's family issued a statement saying they were in a "state of shock and confusion."

The babies' bodies were sent to the Utah medical examiner's office for tests, including one to determine the cause of death. DNA samples taken from the suspect and her husband will determine definitively whether the two are the parents, as investigators believe.

Investigators believe West and Huntsman were together when the babies were born, but don't believe he was aware of the killings. Buhman said Huntsman is the principle suspect, but didn't rule out more arrests as the investigation continues.

Smith declined to say if Huntsman gave birth to the babies in the home or at a hospital.

Huntsman also has three daughters â€" one teenager and two young adults â€" who lived at the house.
#12521

During the interview with police, Huntsman was unemotional and matter of fact, according to Pleasant Grove police Lt. Britt Smith.

Formal charges have not yet been filed against Huntsman and no other arrests have been made but Buhman said the investigation remains open.

Investigators were trying to determine if the seven babies had the same father or multiple fathers, Buhman said.

The gruesome case has raised a series of questions about how the killings occurred despite Huntsman carrying out what neighbors said seemed like a normal existence.

"How can you have a baby and not have evidence and other people know?" asked neighbor SanDee Wall. "You can't plan when a baby is going to come. Just the thought of somebody putting a baby into a box is a heartbreaker."

Police declined to comment on a motive and on what Huntsman said during an interview with investigators.

PROVO, Utah -- Authorities said a U.S. woman accused of killing six babies that she gave birth to over 10 years told investigators that she either strangled or suffocated the children and put them inside boxes in the garage of her home in the western state of Utah.

According to a probable cause statement released by police Monday, Megan Huntsman said that between 1996 and 2006, she gave birth to at least seven babies and that all but one of them were born alive.

Huntsman, 39, said she killed them immediately after they were born, and put their bodies inside the boxes. The statement said each baby was wrapped in either a towel or a shirt, and placed in a plastic bag.

Huntsman is being held on $6 million bail â€" $1 million for each baby she's accused of killing. It wasn't immediately clear if she had an attorney.

Huntsman was arrested Sunday on six counts of murder after police found the infants' tiny bodies in her former home in Pleasant Grove, a leafy, sleepy town about 35 miles (56 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City. A seventh baby found appears to have been stillborn, Utah County Attorney Jeffrey Buhman said.

Science and Research / Re: Megadiverse countries
April 15, 2014, 12:31:33 PM
http://www.deliveringdata.com/

Some areas in our planet are richer in biodiversity than others. Those areas with a higher density of different species are not necessarily where the environment is best protected â€"it is rather thanks to the type of ecosystem. Tropical rainforests are the top biodiversity-rich ecosystems: only the Amazon rainforest harbours one out of every ten known species of our planet.

Therefore, some countries have a major responsibility to protect this diversity, so the World Conservation Monitoring Centre of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP-WCMC) has been working on this issue since 1988. Up to now, it has identified 17 megadiverse countries, that is, those countries with the highest number of endemic species â€"at least 5,000 endemic plants.

The world’s top biodiversity-rich continent is America, with 7 megadiverse countries:

- Brazil
- Colombia
- Ecuador
- Unites States
- Mexico
- Peru
- Venezuela

Asia ranks the second, with 5 megadiverse countries:

- The Philippines
- India
- Indonesia
- Malaysia
- China

Africa ranks number three, with 3 megadiverse countries:

- Madagascar
- Democratic Republic of the Congo
- Republic of South Africa

Oceania ranks number 4, with 2 megadiverse countries:

- Australia
- Papua New Guinea

Europe has no megadiverse country.

The 17 countries identified as megadiverse by Conservation International
#12540
Science and Research / Megadiverse countries
April 15, 2014, 12:29:04 PM
Megadiverse countries are a group of countries that harbor the majority of the Earth's species and are therefore considered extremely biodiverse. Conservation International identified 17 megadiverse countries in 1998. All are located in, or partially in, tropical or subtropical regions.

In 2002, Mexico formed a separate organization focusing on Like-Minded Megadiverse Countries, consisting of countries rich in biological diversity and associated traditional knowledge. This organization does not include all the megadiverse countries as identified by Conservation International.

In alphabetical order, the 17 megadiverse countries are:

Australia
Brazil
China
Colombia
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Ecuador
India
Indonesia
Madagascar
Malaysia
Mexico
Papua New Guinea
Peru
Philippines
South Africa
United States
Venezuela

Conventional apples. Apples are sprayed more frequently with agricultural chemicals than many other types of fruit for various reasons. While the industry maintains that these residues are safe, studies show farm workers have higher cancer rates. The upshot: Buy organic apples or be sure to wash and peel conventional fruit. "That's another thing, like the potatoes, [where it's] really worth it to buy the organic."
#12553
Milk produced with artificial hormones. Dairy cows are treated with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST) to boost milk production. But it can increases udder infections and can lead to higher levels of a hormone called insulin-like growth factor that may contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers, research shows. A healthier option: Go for milk labeled rBGH-free, rBST-free or organic. "You want to buy the milk that doesn’t have the hormones in it," Dr. Higgins advises.
#12554
Farmed salmon. Farmed salmon are fed fish foods that contain more carcinogens â€" such as PCBs, brominated flame retardants, pesticides, dioxin and DDT â€" than wild fish consume, studies show. A better alternative: Wild-caught Alaska salmon, which is a nutritious low-fat source of protein loaded with heart-boosting fish oils and omega-3s, Dr. Higgins notes.
#12555
Non-organic potatoes. Root vegetables absorb pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides used by farmers to grow them and washing won't remove those chemicals. Your best bet: Buy organic potatoes, which are only slightly more expensive than conventionally grown spuds. "Spending that extra dollar or two dollars to buy organic is definitely worth it when it comes to potatoes," she says.
#12556
Microwave popcorn. Chemicals, including perfluorooctanoic acid, in the resins lining microwave popcorn bags may cause infertility, according to research by the University of California-Los Angeles. Animal studies have also linked the chemicals to liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer. The healthier alternative: Pop natural kernels the old-fashioned way â€" in a skillet. "Let's go old school, like you used to do in the skillet, when we were kids," Dr. Higgins recommends. "That's the healthy way to do it, because popcorn is really a low calorie, good [whole] food to fill you up."
#12557
Corn-fed beef. Farmers feed their animals corn and soybeans, which make the beef less nutritious. Instead, choose grass-fed beef, Dr. Higgins advises. A recent study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Clemson University found grass-fed beef is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), calcium, magnesium, and potassium than corn-fed beef. "You want the grass-fed cows," she says. "A lot of the good benefits aren't there [in corn-fed beef] anymore."
#12558
Canned tomatoes. The linings of tin cans contain bisphenol-A (BPA), a synthetic estrogen linked to reproductive problems, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. "What happens is with the acidity of the tomatoes [BPA] leaches out and your body takes in those BPAs when you eat the tomatoes from the can," she says. A better option: Go with glass-bottled tomatoes, which are loaded with cancer-fighting lycopene and other health-boosting compounds.
#12559
"In Western Medicine, we use a disease model. In other words, you're healthy or you're sick … there’s no in-between," she says. "And what I'm saying is that all the living that we do in-between brings us either closer to health or to disease. And that's what I’m trying to teach people to really understand â€" how it is we become healthy, we prevent disease, we stay healthy, and conversely, the other side of that."

Dr. Higgins notes that United States consumes two-thirds of the entire world's pharmaceuticals, yet we are 35th in terms of life expectancy.

"So the answer doesn't lie in a pill," she explains. "And that's not … to say don't ever take pharmaceutical drugs [or] don't ever have surgery. Far from that; they serve a purpose. [But] we think that that's the answer to everything instead of saying, 'OK what do I need to do for myself each and every day to get closer to that health that I'm really after.' "

To that end, she recommends steering clear of the following seven foods and seeking out healthier alternatives to reduce your overall health risks:

The U.S. spends twice as much per-capita on healthcare as most other wealthy nations, yet trails every one when it comes to the death rate from preventable diseases, according to the nonpartisan health-research foundation The Commonwealth Fund.

One reason: Most healthcare dollars are spent on drugs and therapies that treat health problems after they develop and not on prevention strategies that could ward off them off in the first place. What’s more, many Americans have unhealthy lifestyle habits that contribute to heart disease, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and other conditions.

But Dr. Evelyn Higgins tells Newsmax Health there is a better way. As a doctor, author, and syndicated radio show host, she has built a career preaching the gospel of wellness and prevention. She argues that health is more than simply the absence of disease and 70-80 percent of ailments are lifestyle-based â€" from eating the wrong foods (including seven you should never consume) and not exercising enough.

Boxing: Manny Pacquiao beats Timothy Bradley Jr. in rematch
By Lyle Fitzsimmons | CBSSports.com
April 11, 2014 1:13 pm ET

Nearly two years later, Manny Pacquiao has his revenge.

The 35-year-old Filipino beat back the challenge on Saturday night of the same fighter -- Timothy Bradley -- who'd beaten him in a wildly unpopular decision to take his WBO welterweight title in June 2012.

Pacquiao got the nod this time, winning two scorecards by 116-112 margins and a third by a 118-110 score.

"I knew I had to do more in this fight than I did in the last fight," said Pacquiao.

CBSSports.com agreed with the scoring, giving it to Pacquiao as well, 115-113.

"Manny was a little sloppy tonight but I was happy with his performance," Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said. "It looked like Bradley was going for a one-punch home run."

The loss was the first of Bradley's 10-year pro career and dropped him to 31-1. Pacquiao is now 56-5-2.

Wunsy was sitting on Miss Mancino’s shoulder on their daily walk, when the 25-year-old was grabbed around the neck and pushed to the ground in what police believe was an attempted sexual assault.

But faithful Wunsy immediately swooped on the man, slapping him in the face with her wings, while squawking angrily â€" quite an impressive reaction for a small bird weighing just 12oz.

The attacker, who had groped another woman just minutes earlier, ran away terrified â€" but not before looking over his shoulder to check Wunsy wasn’t in pursuit.

Yesterday, part-time violin teacher Miss Mancino paid tribute to her 10-month-old pet as police appealed for information about her attacker, who is suspected of at least one other indecent assault Sunny Hill Park in Hendon, north London.

Miss Mancino had gone on a walk to give Wunsy some exercise, letting her fly about while attached to her wrist with a cord.

She said: “I saw a man in my peripheral vision walking fast behind me. I didn’t think anything of it, but Wunsy changed direction on my shoulder to face him.

“I said, ‘Its OK Wunsy, don’t worry’, but then the man jumped on me, grabbed me around the neck and started pushing me down.

“I thought instinctively that he was trying to steal my parrot but then I realised he was targeting me.

“I lost my balance and Wunsy started flapping at him. Her wings were right in his face and she was squawking. He just ran off.”

Miss Mancino, who also has a parakeet and a dog, bought Wunsy eight months ago for £650 (A$1,160).

WHEN Rachel Mancino was attacked in the park by a suspected sexual predator, it was the unlikeliest of heroes who came to her rescue.

Rather than a brave passer-by wrestling her assailant to the ground, it was Wunsy, her faithful African Grey parrot, who scared him off.

Tomita-Yokotani, a plant physiologist, said it was difficult to explain why the temple tree has grown so fast because there was no control group to compare its growth with that of other trees.

She said cross-pollination with another species could not be ruled out, but a lack of data was hampering an explanation.

“Of course, there is the possibility that exposure to stronger cosmic rays accelerated the process of sprouting and overall growth,” she said.

“From a scientific point of view, we can only say we don't know why.” Wakata is back aboard the ISS, where he is in command of the station.

It normally takes about 10 years for a cherry tree of the similar variety to bear its first buds.

Exposure to cosmic rays?

“It was an educational and cultural project to let children gather the stones and learn how they grow into trees and live on after returning from space,” said Miho Tomioka, a spokeswoman for the project's organiser, Japan Manned Space Systems (JAMSS).

“We had expected the tree to blossom about 10 years after planting when the children come of age,” she said.

Kaori Tomita-Yokotani, a researcher at the University of Tsukuba, who took part in the project, told AFP she was stumped by the extraterrestrial mystery.

“We still cannot rule out the possibility that it has been somewhat influenced by its exposure to the space environment,” she said.

The stones were sent to the ISS in November 2008 and came back to Earth in July the following year with Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata after circling the globe 4100 times.

Some were sent for laboratory tests, but most were ferried back to their places of origin, and a selection were planted at nurseries near the Ganjoji temple.

By April this year, the “space cherry tree” had grown to around four metres (13 feet) tall, and suddenly produced nine flowers â€" each with just five petals, compared with about 30 on flowers of the parent tree.

Its early blooming turned on its head the received wisdom of the Buddhist brothers at the ancient temple in central Japan where the tree is growing.

“We are amazed to see how fast it has grown,” Masahiro Kajita, chief priest at the Ganjoji temple in Gifu, told AFP by telephone.

“A stone from the original tree had never sprouted before. We are very happy because it will succeed the old tree, which is said to be 1250 years old.”

The wonder pip was among 265 harvested from the celebrated “Chujo-hime-seigan-zakura” tree, selected as part of a project to gather seeds from different kinds of cherry trees at 14 locations across Japan.

A COSMIC mystery is uniting monks and scientists in Japan after a tree grown from a cherry stone that orbited the Earth for eight months bloomed years earlier than expected â€" and with very surprising flowers.

The four-year-old sapling â€" grown from a cherry pit that spent time on-board the International Space Station (ISS) -- burst into blossom on April 1, possibly a full six years ahead of Mother Nature's normal schedule.

By Melchor U. Yburan

Sa mga aseros nga naghaw-ang;
Apan may handomanan kong gibilin
Sa natad sa tiunay kulturang tabonon.
Sa kamingaw sa imong pagtalikod,
May gugma pa nga nawili sa imong bayhon,

Eddie saved Hutto's life, the lives of a dozen patrol members and countless people in the village.

For his service, Eddie retired Friday with full military honors. The ceremony was held at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, and a few dozen soldiers turned out to cheer Eddie on.

The Belgian Malinois dog was assigned to MacDill's 6th Security Forces Squadron and has served for about five years. He's also helped sweep government buildings and helped the Secret Service by checking presidential and vice presidential visit venues.

In retirement, he will be reunited with his first handler, Andrew Grymes.

Hutto said he will be forever grateful to Eddie for saving his life.

During the brief retirement ceremony, Eddie wasn't quite sure what to make of all the people clapping, talking and saluting. He appeared nonplussed when someone formally handed Hutto a plaque.

But when Carol White, a private Air Force contractor, gave him a special cake made out of peanut butter and bananas, he dove right in.

As a working dog, Eddie wasn't allowed such luxuries. Now he's free to enjoy the pleasures of retirement.

"He can go and be a pet," said Hutto. "100 percent, sitting on the couch, playing with toys, sleeping in the bed."

TAMPA, Fla. â€" Staff Sgt. Shannon Hutto thought his bomb sniffing dog Eddie was just being lazy when he wouldn't move from a certain spot one hot day in Afghanistan in 2012.

But Hutto then saw what Eddie smelled: a homemade bomb, partially buried in the dirt. It was six inches from Hutto's foot.

"It was a high stress moment," Hutto said.

A short time later, Eddie sniffed out another improvised explosive placed on a bridge the patrol unit was about to cross.
