In the fifth Chronicle of Narnia, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Edmund, Lucy, and their spoiled cousin Eustace are summoned to help on a quest in the Eastern Sea. Along the way, Eustace is tempted by enchanted treasure and turned into a dragon. The desperate dragon accepts the help of the great lion Aslan, king of Narnia. But Eustace can only be freed by allowing Aslan’s claws to painfully tear off the dragon’s flesh. Grateful for his deliverance, Eustace chooses to become a better boy.

Receiving God’s gift of salvation through Christ is a one-time event, but to become like Him often requires suffering and struggle. It involves putting off old sinful habits and replacing them with new godly ones. Paul wrote, “Put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt . . . [and] put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph. 4:22-24).

What is troubling you today? God may be using the kind rebuke of a friend or a painful trial to prompt you to get rid of a sinful habit and to replace it with godly character (Rom. 8:29; 1 Peter 4:1-2).

The process of becoming like Christ is sometimes painful, but it’s always worth it.

Bible Study / Eternal Life For Anyone
May 30, 2008, 08:12:29 AM
By Oswald Chambers
My Utmost For His Highest

We have no experiences in our lives that correspond to the events in our Lord’s life after the transfiguration. From that moment forward His life was altogether substitutionary. Up to the time of the transfiguration, He had exhibited the normal, perfect life of a man.

But from the transfiguration forwardâ€" Gethsemane, the Cross, the resurrectionâ€" everything is unfamiliar to us. His Cross is the door by which every member of the human race can enter into the life of God; by His resurrection He has the right to give eternal life to anyone, and by His ascension our Lord entered heaven, keeping the door open for humanity.

The transfiguration was completed on the Mount of Ascension. If Jesus had gone to heaven directly from the Mount of Transfiguration, He would have gone alone. He would have been nothing more to us than a glorious Figure. But He turned His back on the glory, and came down from the mountain to identify Himself with fallen humanity.

The ascension is the complete fulfillment of the transfiguration. Our Lord returned to His original glory, but not simply as the Son of Godâ€" He returned to His father as the Son of Man as well. There is now freedom of access for anyone straight to the very throne of God because of the ascension of the Son of Man.

As the Son of Man, Jesus Christ deliberately limited His omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience. But now they are His in absolute, full power. As the Son of Man, Jesus Christ now has all the power at the throne of God. From His ascension forward He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Tubigon, Bohol / Two Persons Stab in Tubigon
May 29, 2008, 06:28:36 PM
Published by Bohol Sunday Post

Two separate stabbing incidents and a case of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition marred the fiesta season of Tubigon, Bohol.

One was in the Plaza area on May 14 where the victim, identified as Roldan Telmoro, single and resident of barangay Centro, was stabbed by a certain Daniel Beltran, 25, single, resident of Sitio Ingod of the same barangay, using a jungle knife, locally known as Batangas.

The suspect allegedly hit the victim at the right side of his body that night.
The victim was immediately brought to the Tubigon Community Hospital and was later transferred to a hospital in Tagbilaran for further treatment.

According to spot report, police arrested the suspect after a hot pursuit and confiscated a batangas knife with blood strain.

The suspect is now in the custody of the Philippine National Police (PNP), waiting for appropriate criminal charges.

In another stabbing incident, a certain Noel Omus, of legal age, resident of Pooc Oriental, this town, was allegedly stabbed on his left breast by an unidentified suspect on the same night.

He was immediately brought to Tubigon Community Hospital and was later transferred to a hospital in Tagbilaran for further treatment.

Presently, the Tubigon Police made a pursuit for the unidentified suspect and if ever arrested, the police will file appropriate charges against him.

Meanwhile, an illegal possession of firearm and ammunition of certain Emillio Leria, single, 43 years old and a resident of barangay Potohan, this town, was charged by the police for violation of R.A 8294.

The Potohan barangay captain and ABC president Rosauro Yosoya, himself, arrested the suspect for allegedly firing indiscriminately his unlicensed firearm after a drinking spree with friends in the barangay.

Islander of Hambongan off Inabanga town have finally tasted the fruits of their labor when they harvested for the first time Tuesday the mature Eucheuma seaweeds locally known as guso - planted and cultured in deep seawaters.

Until the technology was introduced to Bohol, seaweeds farmers planted guso in shallow waters that made them vulnerable to disease aggravated by the flow of the tide and alternate excessive heat during the day and extreme cold late at night and towards dawn.

Stark neediness suffered by some of his constituents prompted Mayor Jose Jono Jumamoy to find poverty reduction programs applicable in the islands - among them deep sea guso farming funded with a grant from the municipal government.

Municipal Councilors Amormeo de la Torre, and Nolasco Salazar, Fe Curato and Fisheries Sector Chief Madelone Rengel of the Provincial Agriculturist's Office, Coordinator Beato Hinaloc of the Regional Fishery Training Center (RFTC), Municipal Agriculture Officer Leocadio Torregosa and coastal community organizers witnessed the harvest.

The seaweeds mature in 45 days so that if the farmers plant their staked areas on a staggered basis, they can harvest one area after another, hence, "continuously."

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Garcia Hernandez was certified with the ISO 14001:2004 or the Environmental Management System Standard on May 20 under certificate registration no. 2008-05-15 by the TUV Sud PSB Philippines, Inc.

Four pilot offices of the municipality underwent the certification audit from TUV Sud PSB Philippines, Inc. headed by External Lead Auditor Jocelyn Magat and Charlie Labrador.

The pilot offices audited were the Office of the Municipal Mayor (MO), Office of the Municipal Planning and Development Coordinator (MPDC), Office of the Municipal Treasurer (MTO), and the Office of the Municipal Agriculture (MAO).

The two-day audit included inspection of documents and programs of the municipality which should adhere to the international environmental and local policies. Municipal officials and staff even those not included in the pilot offices were required to know the EMS program being implemented in the municipality, thus a random individual interview was also conducted.

In the afternoon of the second day, department heads and implementing committees of the pilot offices gathered at the SB Session Hall for the final result of the audit.

Magat and Charlie Labrador reported their findings and ended up in saying that they are recommending the municipality of Garcia Hernandez for the award of the certificate of ISO 14001.

The LGU of Garcia Hernandez had been preparing for the certification audit for three years now, tapping the help of the provincial government, which is also certified with the ISO 14001.

Prior to the certification audit, a stage-1 audit was conducted on October 26, 2007 to assess the LGU and determine the possible non-compliance factors that may hinder the certification for ISO 14001.

The municipal government of Garcia-Hernandez asked assistance mostly from the EMS personnel of the provincial government.

Engr. Maximino Aton was one of those most frequently asked, since he is one of the EMS Internal Auditors of the provincial government.

The whole preparation of the audit can also be credited to MISEREOR of Germany, the funding donor of the project Partnership in Advocacy in Sustainable Environment Objectives (PASEO) which aimed to adopt the system in the municipality of Garcia-Hernandez.

The project is implemented by the Bohol Integrated Development Foundation Inc.

To each his own man. To each his own favored contractor. And the winner is....

The spectacle of Cong. Adam Relson Jala and his father, former congressman Eladio Jala, squabbling over an P80 million road project in the third district ended in the victory of the son.

The congressman's choice contractor identified as Yakal Construction bagged the P80 million road contract besting 19 other qualified contractors, most of them Cebu-based. The bidding was held at the Department of Public Works and Highways regional office last Monday.

The Ormoc-based contractor was confirmed to have won the road project, the biggest in Jala's stable of road undertakings, by no less than his chief of staff, Greggy Gatal.

Gatal was asked by the Post to relay to his boss if he would like to react regarding the tug-of-war between father and son. in the choice of who would bag the P80 million road project. The project connects the unpaved portion of the S-Bullones-Jagna road. This project was part of an earlier concreting job undertaken by Persan Construction which was alleged to be the favorite contractor of Jala's father when he was still the congressman of the district.

In fact, during the elder Jala's time, his favorite contractor was in the news because at least six 3rd district projects were cornered by this contractor. Local contractors raised a vehement howl why the projects were monopolized by one contractor but to no avail.

In the son vs father bidding skirmish, the later also supported the bid of Persan but it was dislodged by the son's choice of a contractor.

What is scandalous, if this report happens to be true, was the prospect of Jala's boys forming a construction company in order to undertake the P80 million concreting work. Paying a royalty fee of 5% of the project cost to the winning bidder, it is possible that the project will be subcontracted by the newly-formed construction outfit.

In another food expo, the Bohol Poverty Reduction and Management Office (BPRMO) negotiated for an export market for ginger products of local entrepreneurs.

Aside from the potential Canada export market, BPRMO Head Antonieto Pernia also found a new export opportunity for ginger products from Bohol during the recent International Food Expo at Mall of Asia in Manila on May 16-18.

Bohol Processed Foods (ProFoods) president Arnold Labunog, owner of Jojie's Bakeshop here, led the delegation of Boholano producers to the IFEX.

According to Pernia, it was at the international food festival that Bohol products had the first exposure in an international expo to get the attention of international traders, where the Bohol-based La Tienda's mango-oats cookies was cited as one of the products with good packaging.

Affirming the prevailing market for ginger that Pernia observed during his trade mission to Canada on April 19-May 3 in an effort to facilitate penetration of Bohol products to the North American market, international traders attending the IFEX also searched for ginger-supplying provinces among the participants. And, they saw the potentials of Bohol.

On this, the BPRMO head assured ginger farmers that the market for their produce is wide that those from Candabong, a barangay in Loboc which has been known for ginger cultivation, might even have to buy stock from other farmers in the barangays when they could close a deal with those foreign traders at the IFEX.

Pernia encouraged other farmers to also engage in ginger cultivation like the Candabong farmers, considering the huge market abroad.

He said he had talked with a Japanese trade consul who had expressed interest on the ginger products displayed in the booth of Candabaong at the IFEX and other products from Bohol. He even invited the local entrepreneurs to penetrate Japan, saying their goods have a potential market in their country.

Pernia also said he learned from the Japanese trade consul that Japan's minimum order is 500 six-cubic-foot boxes of ginger.

The consul even offered a lucrative proposal on the terms of payment where they will pay in advance for the stock upon taking the order.

This way, Pernia said, the small-time entrepreneurs can maximize the advance payment to catch up with bulk order and meet the demand.

At the IFEX, Pernia said he observed that the booth of barangay Candabong, municipality of Loboc had the most number of visitors who were foreign traders.

The foreign visitors were attracted to the showcase of ginger products in the booth, Pernia said.

The BPRMO head also claimed that among the participating provinces, Bohol attracted most of the visitors, for it was only then that they learned about the exotic products from the province, aside from the beaches that it had been known for.

From the IFEX, Pernia said he could now conclude that, indeed, ginger has the highest demand nowadays even with the many other products in the array.

He said he even met at IFEX, those buyers that he met in Canada including those who were from China, West Coast in United States, and Japan.

The much-awaited eyeball to eyeball confrontation between two "honorables" of two separate legislative bodies on the issue of the city's drainage problem never took place after one of the protagonists was a no-show.

Until late last night, it was still unknown why City Councilor Danilo Bantugan chickened out from his supposed confrontation with Board Member Alfonso Damalerio II.

A committee of the whole was called by City V-Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso Friday to tackle the concerns of Board Member Alfonso Damalerio,II on the city's drainage problem.

Apparently aware that he was treading into hostile territory, Damalerio appeared ready to be roasted by Bantugan and his colleagues during the Friday SP session. But no Bantugan ever appeared on sight.

With Bantugan out of the session hall, prospects of verbal fireworks exploding never materialized, to the utter frustration of the gallery made up mostly of media people and curious seekers.

Damalerio provoked the sensibilities of Bantugan after he delivered a privilege speech in the halls of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan denouncing the inaction of city officials in addressing the city's drainage problem.

The board member's tirades did not sit well with Bantugan.

During last week's session of the Sangguniang Panglungsud, Bantugan went ballistic with his own privilege speech zeroing in on Damalerio's intrusion into another man's turf.

The meat of Bantugan's barbs was for Damalerio to make an apology to the city council or he will pass a resolution declaring him persona non grata.

Refusing to be cowed, Damalerio retorted that he has nothing to apologize. He said if he were to issue an apology, he would make it on behalf of affected city residents who are suffering the stink of the city's drainage during heavy rainfall when the roads overflowed with rain water laced with sewage odor.

One of the subjects that even the national broadsheets are tiptoeing around is the political kickback. It as been an open secret that an elective position like congressman and senator do not rely upon their salaries but what they can get out of the pork barrel. Any candidate for those positions would land either in the nuthouse or poorhouse or both. Paying millions to be elected i9nto an office, which would pay thousands, is not sound economy. Simple arithmetic.

No wonder, Philippine politics is a dog eat dog environment. Filial and fraternal ties are forgotten. Morality and principles are exchanged for pragmatism and expediency. Millions are at stake for those who dare. If son goes against father, that would not be surprising. No wonder old families ever venture into that field.

In the Third District, several congressmen had served out their three terms. Most ads left the office without fielding successors coming from their families. Perhaps they did not have the manpower; Esteban Bernido left his son to fend for himself.

Teodoro Galagar did not field any successor of note. Isidro Zarraga did give several but his support was only by association rather than all out. It was only Elpidio Jala, who succeeded in leaving his position to his son Adam.

It was not that the Third District did not have anyone who would fit the position.

Rene Relampagos tried for it. So did Dionisio Balite. There was Fortunato Abrenilla but he was edged out by Jala from the Lakas and Balite from the Kampi. Abrenilla being a loyal party man left the field to the three. So it was Adam Jala, some said who is scarcely dry behind the ears, which edged out the former two, thanks to the efforts of Jala the elder.

This time the Jalas are reported to be at odds, which will be awarded the contract of millions. The elder (father) has his preference, those would be who had worked with him while in office while the younger (the son) has his own. Out of filial piety, the son must defer to the father, as father knows best since he has been there for so long However, Adam is said to have defied him hence the spat. Cynics are of the opinion that it is a matter who shells out more for whom. We are of the opinion that the younger may have his own preference as he might have a better confidence of is own set. Let the rest form their own opinion.

Granting that the percent cut or tong may be present. The Bids and Awards Committee has to cook up deals to favor certain contractors. But that is life.

Without the pork barrel no one would run for office. The winning contractor must have to make do with what is left to him. The program of work must be fashioned out to allow him to recover the lost percentage. If certain standards are to be followed, he is going to lose his shirt, as there are others, who will make demands from him.

The multimillion Jagna to Sierra Bullones project might he constructed according to specifications. As a project 0f the President, this portion of the Central Nautical Highway would be noticeable if poor workmanship is evident. Or if the construction is not as long as it is intended to be. By association, many would think that the President may also have a part of the cut though how small. We would to like to encourage that thought.

As we say people tend to be cynical. They are prone to believe the worst scenario presented. The Jalas are in a no win situation. Bidding for projects can be above board or it could be manipulated. Whether it is the former or the latter, it is hard to prove. There would be "sour raping" among the losing bidders. There would be those who would blab.

Bible Study / Partakers of the Divine Nature
May 29, 2008, 08:47:59 AM
from My Utmost For His Highest

We are made "partakers of the divine nature," receiving and sharing God’s own nature through His promises. Then we have to work that divine nature into our human nature by developing godly habits. The first habit to develop is the habit of recognizing God’s provision for us. We say, however, "Oh, I can’t afford it." One of the worst lies is wrapped up in that statement.

We talk as if our heavenly Father has cut us off without a penny! We think it is a sign of true humility to say at the end of the day, "Well, I just barely got by today, but it was a severe struggle." And yet all of Almighty God is ours in the Lord Jesus! And He will reach to the last grain of sand and the remotest star to bless us if we will only obey Him.

Does it really matter that our circumstances are difficult? Why shouldn’t they be! If we give way to self-pity and indulge in the luxury of misery, we remove God’s riches from our lives and hinder others from entering into His provision. No sin is worse than the sin of self-pity, because it removes God from the throne of our lives, replacing Him with our own self-interests.

It causes us to open our mouths only to complain, and we simply become spiritual spongesâ€" always absorbing, never giving, and never being satisfied. And there is nothing lovely or generous about our lives.

Before God becomes satisfied with us, He will take everything of our so-called wealth, until we learn that He is our Source; as the psalmist said, "All my springs are in You" (Psalm 87:7 ). If the majesty, grace, and power of God are not being exhibited in us, God holds us responsible.

"God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you . . . may have an abundance . . ." ( 2 Corinthians 9:8  )â€" then learn to lavish the grace of God on others, generously giving of yourself. Be marked and identified with God’s nature, and His blessing will flow through you all the time.

Strength For Our Journey

There are some moments in Scripture that I would have choreographed a little differently if it had been up to me. Now, before you start writing in to tell me I’m a heretic, please know that I believe wholeheartedly in the final authority of Scripture and the sovereignty of God. I don’t want to risk a lightning bolt and am not slacking off in my theology!

But if you or I were consulted about some of these moments in Scripture, we might have orchestrated them with a little more fanfare. For instance, the moment when Adam woke up to find Eve before him had to be a “fireworks, roses, and violins” kind of moment! Or what about the birth of Christ? Though God had a purpose in it, we probably would have chosen something a little more dramatic than a dingy stable and a few shepherds.

I have the same kinds of thoughts when I read through Genesis 12:1-3. This conversation between Abraham and God occurs in the middle of nowhere. I think of Abraham as a great patriarch, but in this moment he is an uninitiated nomad with no doubt an idolatrous background. And yet, here in this conversation between God and a rather unlikely person, God makes an earth-shattering promise. God shows up and tells Abraham that he would become a great nation. Then God promisesâ€"this is the moment we would cue the drum roll and a thousand-trumpet fanfareâ€"that through him, “All peoples on earth will be blessed.”

This is one of the first prophecies of the coming of Jesus Christ through the seed of Abraham. Take it personallyâ€"you and I, who are followers of Jesus today, are recipients of the phenomenal benefits of that promise.

Both genealogies of Jesus in the Gospels trace His lineage back to Abraham. Through the entire Old Testament, even when it seemed that the promise had been jeopardized by the unfaithfulness of Israel, God was faithfully preparing to keep His promise to Abraham. And then the moment arrived when the promise was fulfilled. On the hill of Calvary, it was a descendant of Abraham hanging on the cross, giving His life for us so that, as the promise predicted, you and I could be “blessed” in massive proportion. And it all started with a promise made to a wandering nomad over 4,000 years ago. No cheering crowds or angelic choirsâ€"just God, His promise, and an unlikely recipient.

And here is the good news. God still shows up to speak to rather unassuming people like you and me. Every time we read His promises to us it is a profound moment. Behind every promise and plan He lays out for us in His Word, there are ramifications of strategic proportions. You may not hear a lot of fanfare, but the God who was faithful to Abraham will be faithful to His promises to you! So strike up the bandâ€"drum roll, pleaseâ€"God still speaks and delivers on His promises! Are you listening? Do you believe?

Our Daily Bread

When our family went out for an ice cream cone, my dad would ask my mother what flavor she’d like. Often she would reply, “Surprise me!” She told me she was rarely disappointed in his choice.

Do you like surprises? Would you ever dare say, “Surprise me!” to God? A lot of us are a little scared to do that. Yes, we have faith that God is good and that He loves us. Yet we’re afraid we won’t like what He chooses for us.

Throughout the Bible we read that God delights in doing the unexpected. Sometimes it’s folding back the waters for His people to cross a sea on dry ground (Ex. 14:21-22). Or forgiving and embracing those who repent of their sin (Ps. 130:1-4). Jesus’ time on earth was filled with amazing events that pointed people to His Fatherâ€"He turned water into wine, calmed storms, healed the sick, and raised the dead.

What kind of God do we serve? One who is not confined by our finite imagination (Eph. 3:20). God’s thoughts and ways are not like ours (Isa. 55:8 ), and He wants to bless us with far more than a special flavor of ice cream. He delights in His children who trust Him and are willing to say, “Surprise me, Lord!”

from My Utmost For His Highest

Remember that you have been saved so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in your body (see 2 Corinthians 4:10  ). Direct the total energy of your powers so that you may achieve everything your election as a child of God provides; rise every time to whatever occasion may come your way.

You did not do anything to achieve your salvation, but you must do something to exhibit it. You must "work out your own salvation" which God has worked in you already ( Philippians 2:12  ). Are your speech, your thinking, and your emotions evidence that you are working it "out"? If you are still the same miserable, grouchy person, set on having your own way, then it is a lie to say that God has saved and sanctified you.

God is the Master Designer, and He allows adversities into your life to see if you can jump over them properlyâ€""By my God I can leap over a wall" ( Psalm 18:29 ). God will never shield you from the requirements of being His son or daughter. First Peter 4:12  says, "Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you . . . ." Rise to the occasionâ€"do what the trial demands of you. It does not matter how much it hurts as long as it gives God the opportunity to manifest the life of Jesus in your body.

May God not find complaints in us anymore, but spiritual vitalityâ€"a readiness to face anything He brings our way. The only proper goal of life is that we manifest the Son of God; and when this occurs, all of our dictating of our demands to God disappears. Our Lord never dictated demands to His Father, and neither are we to make demands on God. We are here to submit to His will so that He may work through us what He wants. Once we realize this, He will make us broken bread and poured-out wine with which to feed and nourish others.

Nine passengers of a passenger transport were killed in an accident Monday afternoon in Hinatuan town in Surigao del Sur.

Santiago Ronquillo, survivor in the tragic accident, said that they were returning to Hinatuan’s town center after attending a fiesta in Sitio Airport in a passenger transport with almost 50 passengers.

He said however that the vehicle’s brakes went out.

Ronquillo said the vehicle’s driver, Sulpico Altamia, opted to slam the vehicle to one side of the road to avoid falling off a cliff which was on the other side.

Six reportedly died on the spot while three died in Democrito O. Plaza Memorial Hospital in neighboring Agusan del Sur province where the injured victims of the accident were taken. - ABS-CBN News

When it came to choosing a career Norma was in a dilemma to take up music or law, because her father the late Atty. Jose Tecson was a lawyer, her maternal grandfather Pablo Sarmiento was the 3rd Governor of Bohol, her paternal Grandfather Pablo Tecson was Congressman of Bataan and Secretary of the historic Malolos Congress. But her Mama Sophia prevailed believing in her potential to be a great pianist and so to a career of music she went.

A young Boholano doctor's analytical research on iodine against pneumonia has won first place in a Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) competition after his same prolific work was adjudged among the best last year by the University of the Philippines - College of Medicine (UPCM) and Philippine General Hospital (PGH).

Dr. Kazan Baluyot's briliiant research entitled "The Efficacy of Providence-Iodine Oral Rinse in Preventing Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial (VAPOR) Trial)" also earned for him the PCP Young Investigators Award in Analytical Category.

In November last year, the 31-year-old internal medicine diplomate currently pursuing his cardiology fellowship bagged a top prize for his work in the 12th UPCM-PGH Annual Research Week competition.

His outstanding research was in fact the very UPCM entry to the PCP selection.

Born in the year of the dragon, Baluyot is a son of a nurse and Bohol's humanitarian woman, former Red Cross administrator and now Philippine Gift of Life (PGOL) President/Chief Executive Officer Francisca Baluyot, and the late lawyer Manny Baluyot, also a full military colonel.

The national organization of doctors awarded and honored the young Baluyot during the 38th PCP Annual Convention at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City last May 7.

His work was presented in the convention's Young Investigators Oral Free Session.

Doctors Fernando Ayuyao, FPCP president, Charles Yu, vice president and convention chair, Rodolfo Pagcatipunan, Jr., research committee chair, Kenneth Hartigan Go, scientific committee chair, and Oscar Cabahug, research committee regent coordinator, signed the award certificate.

The best entries in different categories were selected during the physicians' convention, which was attended by some 6,000 delegates.

Baluyot both finished his internal medicine and pre-med in public health at the UCPM, where he also earned his internal medicine diplomate title.

He is presently pursuing his cardiology fellowship at the Medical City while attending to cases at the PGH.

The Medical City is a modern hospital complex supported by the Ateneo de Manila University - College of Medicine and mostly manned by PGH graduates.

Despite its infancy, the Medical City has instantly built an image as a hospital for Manila's rich and famous.

While a medical student, Baluyot already displayed sharpness and focus when he won in a University of Tokyo competition.

His academic foundation was laid strong during his elementary and secondary studies at the Bohol Wisdom School and Philippine Science High School, respectively.

Baluyot is a "most exalted brother" of the UP physicians' fraternity.

The young doctor, who is the second youngest of seven siblings, has two brothers, Al and Jojo, and two sisters, Judy and Cates, who are all nurses in the United States, another sister named Mary Ann who is a doctor here, and youngest sister Fama who is a new lawyer.

Fama, 28, is presently in a masteral study grant abroad and regarded one of the best foreign scholars of the world-renowned law school of the National University of Singapore.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Jagna station under the able leadership of its new and young Chief of Police (COP) P/Insp. Ramoncelio Sawan received a brand new Toyota Altis patrol car from the Camp Crame National Headquarters at a simple yet fitting turn-over ceremony right after the weekly flag raising at the Jagna gymnasium on May 12.

Agas, Jagna PNP is committed to serve more the people entrusted to us,” Sawan concluded.

New York, USA - The Loboc Children’s Choir (LCC) is not just Bohol’s Pride but the nation’s pride as well. For no less than the Philippines Consul General in New York Cecilia Rebong, the Department of Tourism Director Emma Ruth Yulo, and the Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations Hilario Davide, hailed the Choir as “ the Philippines’ Little Ambassador to the World.”

Our country’s three top dignitaries were all there in attendance to watch the Boholano children perform in a concert show promoted by the Tigum Bol-anon Tibuok Kalibutan(TBTK), A Gathering of Boholanos from Around the World, thru its Chairperson Betty Veloso-Garcia, together with the Alliance of Manila and Philippine Islanders, SA. Held last Friday, May 9 starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Church of St. Emeric along 185 Avenue D at 12th St., NY City.

The concert venue was filled to capacity by Filipino-American audience, who gave the children performers a standing ovation. All the 21 song renditions categorized in three parts as the Spanish Heritage/Song of Worship, Songs from Other Cultures, and Filipiniana were warmly applauded one after the other. At the end of the Finale number when the choir sang Light of a Million Mornings, the crowd overflowing with delight requested for more songs which the children gladly acceded by rendering pieces from their repertoire .

They were just mesmerized by the musical talents and angelic voices of the 21 member kids choir whose ages range from 9 to 14. All the LCCs 300 CD records were sold like hotcakes, while some ended up disappointed not to be able to bring home such prized musical collection from a Choir that has reaped laurels and awards in the Philippines and abroad.

The Loboc Children’s Choir started its humble beginning in 1980 when it was established for school and community affairs. Then represented the Province of Bohol in the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) where they became consistent National Champions for 2001, 1995, and 1993. The Choir has held concert shows all over the country as well as in other parts of the world.

They were invited by the World Vision Korea in 2004 to represent the Philippines in the World Vision International Children’s Choir Festival. In 2000 the LCC was sent to Tianjin, China during the International Children’s Culture and Arts Festival. In 1996, the Choir toured key cities in the United States. A major highlight of the choir’s past activities is its First European Concert Tour in September to November of 2003.

Where LCC represented the Philippines in the 6th International Folksongs Festival held in Barcelona, Spain. The Boholano Choir bagged the Gold Medal(First Prize) of the Youth Category and was also awarded the Festival Cup or the Grand Prize besting other 12 choirs from all over the world. LCC has performed concert shows in the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Chech Republic, Germany, and Switzerland. Its concert repertoire is a combination of classical, folk, modern and children’s songs.

Two more concert shows were performed by the Loboc Children Choir in the Immaculate Conception Church Auditorium along 8645 Edgerton Blvd, Jamaica, NY, the day after May 9 at 3:00 P.M., a Saturday and on a Mother’s Day of May 11, the same time, coordinated by a Boholano Priest Fr. Jed Sumampong, who also is a native of Loboc town.

Fr Sumampong said nostalgically that the same Choir sang for him during his Priestly ordination about 15 years ago. Again, the concert venue was filled to capacity and the crowd gave the performers a standing ovation. The audience response was overwhelming and spirit filled. As if they were serenaded by angels and cherubim who descended from heaven. Fr. Sumampong is of the opinion that the hands of the Holy Spirit is guiding the direction of the Choir that elevate them to the pedestal where they are now. Proceeds of the show will go to the renovation of the Loboc Church and providing scholarship grants to the LCC members, past and present.

The Choir’s Conductor is Mrs. Alma Taldo: Piano-Accompanist Mrs. Baby Lina Jala; Lutgardo Labad, Tour Manager and Staging Director. Gina Cabahug, Costume and Make-up; Nerea Jimenez, Production Manager; Teodula Liz S. Cal, Assistant Conductor; Hidolito Taldo, Stage Manager; Jerameal Decasa, Technical Director; Natividad Mandin, Costume and Makeup; Kag. Pablio Sumampong, representing the Municipality of Loboc.

LCC’s ongoing US Spring concert tour already brought them to the cities of Seattle and Olympia in Washington; Los Angeles and San Francisco in California; Washington, DC, and Baltimore. From New York, the Choir will proceed to Houston Texas, Saint Louis, Missouri, Kansas City, Missouri, Ontario, Canada, then winds up in San Diego, California. Before flying back to Bohol in June, just in time for the opening of classes for the next school year.

Constantly under criticism of alleged poor quality hospital services, in competence, mismanagement, among others, doctors of the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital (GCGMH) appealed for understanding from the public.

“We have been doing our best despite being under staffed, lack of resources and other limitations. We are not superman and just like any other persons we have also feelings that get hurt,” doctors in the government hospital said.

Hospital chief Dr. Nenita Moraga-Po said she does not agree on accusations of incompetence and mismanagement citing that even other government hospitals conduct their Lakbay- Aral Study Tour to see and replicate what has been done here.

Four departments of the GCGMH, the Surgery, Pediatrics, Pathology and OB-Gyne are duly accredited by the Medical Specialty Board.

The head of the OB-Gyne Department Dr. Ma. Delia Maluenda particularly appealed to the media, whom she said always crucifies them, whenever complaints are brought to the radio.

“We have few resident physicians at GCGMH and I am very much concerned on their sensitive feelings that may result to their mass resignation when media unfairly condemned them,” Dr. Maluneda said,

She recalls that in 2004, all of the hospital’s resident physicians resigned after and incident of alleged negligence when an infant fell to their floor during delivery.

Two weeks ago, the OB-Gyne department again figured in another incident when it was accused of favoring patients and security guards roughly treating patients’ relatives at the ward. The hospital was also rocked by another issue of a patient who allegedly died in a comfort room while waiting to be attended by doctors.

Dr. Maluenda said she herself is thinking of also resigning from government hospital work, if this unfair condemnation continues.

Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado now has another ace rolled up his sleeve where the implementation of environmental laws, rules and regulations in Bohol is concerned: Secretary Jose Atienza Jr. recently named him as deputy environment and natural resources officer (DENRO).

Aumentado’s deputation came in the form of DENR Special Order No. 2008-265 dated April 24, 2008 but received at the Governor’s Office only last May 13.

Citing two administrative orders, a presidential decree and all other environment and natural laws, rules and regulations as legal bases for the deputation, the order gives the governor power and authority to intercept and/or investigate any violation of forestry laws, rules and regulations and to arrest even without warrant any person who has committed, is committing or is about to commit in their presence any of the criminal offenses defined in PD 795, as amended, within the territorial jurisdiction of DENR.

The order also authorizes the governor to apprehend and seize the tools, equipment and conveyance used in the commission of the offenses including all natural resources products extracted, cut, gathered or removed and possessed by the offender/s in the process of committing the offense, and file the appropriate complaint, in coordination with the concerned DENR and other officials designated by law to conduct preliminary investigation and likewise file the information in court through the Community ENRO, Provincial ENRO or Regional Executive Director (RED) concerned.

The order limits Aumentado’s exercise of such power within Bohol . The deputation order took effect immediately upon approval and automatically expires in one year unless sooner revoked or terminated.

Aumentado welcomes the deputation, saying it gives more teeth to his enforcing laws, rules and regulations on forestry, environment, mining and quarrying.

To note, Atienza effected a shuffling of top DENR officials in Bohol after reports reaching Aumentado implicated them in the cutting, sale and shipment even of endangered and naturally grown species in watershed and protected areas.

The governor reconstituted Task Force Kabukiran that has Sr. Supt. Edgardo Ingking, Bohol Provincial Police Office (BPPO) director as his co-chair. PENRO Nestor Canda and CENROs Eusalem Quiwag and Alejandro Estopa are members with the special assignment of orienting fellow enforcers in environment special laws.

Regional Technical Director Isabelo Montejo of DENR 7 Friday had enumerated 12 special laws that, if well implemented, would make trees especially in watersheds and protected areas safe.

Aumentado literally blew his top when three confidential reports dated March 24, April 7 and April 22 naming names and supported by pictures that reached him. In turn, he submitted the report to Atienza who effected the shuffling.

Realizing that the job of watching over Bohol’s trees, mines and quarries is a gigantic one to say the least, Aumentado steered the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) during its meeting Friday afternoon even as a civic action went on in Barangay Bantolinao in Antequera town to pass a resolution asking Atienza to deputize the rest of the members of Task Force Kabukiran, the police and a composite team of the military as well.

Butuan City - Caraganons need no longer have to travel to Davao, Cagayan de Oro or even to Manila just to apply for a passport as President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo inaugurated here Wednesday the 12th regional consular office of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Executive Director Ellen Jaucian of the consular office of the Department of Foreign Affairs toured the President to the office at the second floor of Cesia building along South Montilla Boulevard right after the ribbon-cutting ceremony that formally kicked off its operation.

Laurence Sumando, Acting Director of the regional consular office (RCO) of DFA in Butuan said that their 12th regional consular office is now accepting applicants for passport processing.

He added that with the opening of the DFA here, applicants from Caraga can save not less than 2000 pesos as compared to the amount they spend when they apply to Cagayan de Oro or Davao City.

He also said passport fees are the same in all RCOs with regular processing fees of 500 pesos and expedited processing of 750 pesos.

Earlier, Agusan del Norte 1st District Rep. Jose "Joboy" Aquino II said that he lobbied for the establishment of DFA in Butuan October last year and glad his x his efforts finally paid off.

He thanked President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and DFA Sec. Alberto Romulo for their support to this high impact project that will benefit thousands of people in the region.

He said when he pushed for this project, he put in mind all his constituents and all the people in Caraga and the service it could do to them.

In a related development, DFA Director of Passport Division Donna Gatmaitan said, ramdan na ang kaunlaran with the new machine readable passport (MRP) which they opened to the public since August last year.

She said MRP is a travel document containing data that can be read both by the naked eye and by a machine/passport reader which replaces hand-scripted passports.

Looking in from the outside, Boholanos now living in other countries see the urgent change in the outlook of our people and its leaders today.

They said, going into public office should be an opportunity to serve our fellowmen, not for gain or as a business venture.”

“I don’t see why people seeking elective positions spend millions of pesos on elections when they would just be receiving salaries as public officials merely to the tune of P20 to P30 thousand pesos a month.”

Diony Castro, a balikbayan who hails from the town of Duero, sounded-off such call as he lamented on the current corruption issues involving officials in all level of government.

Castro is now a citizen of the United States, living in Orange County, Los Angeles, California. He was a close-aide of former governor Constancio “Nonoy” Torralba.

Here for a brief vacation, he intimidated his interest to go into public service, but not in the way how politicians try hard, spending millions, to get elected.

Without giving a sweeping statement, Castro said that traditional politicians have made public office as a means of business or livelihood.

“There is no argument that after spending millions in an election, they would recover such investments in the corrupt practices known as kickbacks, commissions, commonly accepted as standing operating procedure (SOP).

Arriving here this week with his family Castro had also a golfing buddy, Dr. Vike Bon of Panglao, share the same observation.

“That is the real reason, “corruption” that makes this nation impoverished and overtaken by its neighboring Asian nations. Unless we really fight to stop these corrupt practices, this nation is going to the dogs,” Dr. Vike said.

Asked if they are going to throw their hands in the 2010 elections in their own hometown, Diony Castro and Vike Bob said, “why not?” - The Bohol Standard

Night cruises, river bank lightings are signs of wrong perceptions of tourism development?

“Bullish ra ta kaayo, to the point nga napalabian na bitaw.”

Atty. Esther Gertrude “Gee” Dompor Biliran, a well-traveled lawyer-environmentalist lamented on the alleged narrow-mindedness of local leaders in promoting tourism, an industry considered as Bohol’s major economic driver today.

Her reactions, shared in the dyRD Inyong Alagad radio program heard worldwide thru internet radio dyrdam.com, was in relation to the recent lightning of the Loboc River which had its ceremonial switch-on last Thursday.

“If these lightings are intended for night cruise, this is too much. Let the river rest,” the lady lawyer said.

Biliran hails from Loboc and her family owns lands, some lots along the river banks of the scenic Loboc River. They have planted mahogany trees along the banks to prevent erosion and preserve the greenery of the area.

“Trees were cut without even asking permission from the land owners. This destroys the natural beauty and threatens the habitat of wild animals and endangered species,” she said.

She noted that from 1970 when she had their lots titled, there is already about two meters from the original land area that has been eroded.

Constant movement of the water resulting from river cruises hastens erosion. River fish have also vanished while before their caretakers can derive bountiful fish catch in these areas, she added.

“Trees, the wilderness are part of the ecology; we should not touch or alter them.

Dili nato hilabtan kay mao nay natural situation and tourists don’t go there to see the lights but for the river’s natural beauty,” she cautions.

She cited the Grand Canyon, an exceptionally deep, steep-walled canyon in north-western Arizona, United States. The entire canyon is extremely beautiful, containing towering buttes, mesas, and valleys within its main gorge.

The site, together with plateau areas on either side, are preserved as the Grand Canyon National Park, which receives about 4 million visitors a year.

“Kon sa ato pa na, ato na sad gisug-an,” she said.

Dyrd Inyong Alagad anchor Fred Araneta, who also frequently travels to America said, “daghan na sad tindahan kon dinhi pa nas ato”, in agreement to the observations of Biliran.

The Loboc River lighting project was funded by a donation of Fil-Chinese taipan Carlos Chan, who is also the Special Envoy of the Philippines to China.

Ang Mga Li Po Sa Siyudad (circa 1991)
sinulat ni Simeon Dumdum Jr.

Si Li Po nalumos dihang mitunob siya sa linaw
Aron unta mopunit ug tipak sa buwan

Hinuon dili man siya Li Po
Ug kadto lim-aw man lang
Ug ang siyudad naputos sa dalan nga pulos lim-aw
Ug misanay ang mga tawo sama kaniya
Nga kon maglumos man ugaling
Adto na lang sa lim-aw sa serbesa...

Labot pa, nianang gabhiona,
Dihang iyang gisid-ing ang lim-aw,
Puno ang iyang dughan...
Dili sa balak, sa kalagot
Sa ting-uwan nga milungag sa kadalanan
Ug sa iyang kalag,

Ug sa mga lungag nga gipasagdan
Sa panahon
Ug City Hall,

Maingon man usab si Allen Ginsberg.

Just how many congressmen has the third district?

If the grapevine is to be believed it has two, -the incumbent Adam Relson Jala and his father Eladio.

This question cropped up after it was gathered that the two were fighting over projects in the third district involving the choice of contractors.

Driven no less by the belief that he is his own man, Cong. Jala was reported to have tangled with his own father, whom he succeeded as third district legislator, in the choice of contractors to prosecute road projects amounting all in all to P.160 million. If one is thinking of having an SOP of 10%, the recipient will get a cool P15 million out of all these projects.

It is everybody's knowledge that public works projects of congressmen are the lucrative source of kickbacks ranging from as low as 10% to as high as 20%.

This information was leaked to the Post yesterday by an unimpeachable source in Bohol's construction industry.

The incident took place after a pre-bidding conference in Cebu where details were discussed as to who among the qualified contractors will undertake at least three road projects in Jala's district The projects are two clustered contracts at P23 million each or P46 million and the biggest at P80 million.

During the meeting, it became evident to the pre-bidding participants that father and son have their own separate protegees of contractors who would be awarded road contracts in the third district.

The most lucrative project where Jala and son were having difficulty settling the score as to who's who would finally bag the contract was the 80 million pesos road project in the S-Bullones-Jagna Road.

Earlier, two projects which were clustered to the scorn and consternation of local contractors were reportedly "cooked" to benefit the young Jala's choice of contractor. There was no sign of objection from the father side. According to local contractors, the projects were clustered although they very far from each other in order to favor the young Jala's choice of road contractor. The neophyte solon did succeed in clustering the two projects depriving local contractors from participating. Despite vehement objections of local contractors to separate the two road contracts, Jala remained unyielding citing that it was the regional DPWH calling the shots given the clustering mode.

But the P80 million road contract where other Cebu and Leyte -based contractors were salivating to undertake were the object of a tug-of-war between Jala and his congressman son.

The young Jala has for his own choice an Ormoc-based construction company while the father's favorite one is a Manila-based construction firm

The elder Jala's choice came into the picture after the contractor (Ormoc-based) was disqualified to bid in the P80 million contracts owing to its failure to file bid documents on time. Unknown to the father, his son has another favorite contractor, this time Cebu-based, that took the cudgels for the disqualified bidder.

Thus, the trouble between father and son.

According to industry sources, "if the truth of the bidding is in the cooking" will not push through, local contractors will have the last laugh because the winning bidder will do away with giving the SOP to all the "players" of the projects-- from the congressman to DPWH officials and personnel. The so-called buy-out which represented 3% of the project cost and to be divided among participating bidders will also be done away with because the bidding became a survival of the fittest-meaning nobody has the upper hand in winning the contract except that it will be decided according to the lowest bid.

Said to be the contractor of choice of retired Highways Undersecretary Juanito Abergas, Pershan Construction bagged all the six projects during the elder Jala's term to the dismay of local contractors.

When the young Jala took over the reins of his father as third district lawmaker, Pershan Construction is back in action. Although already out of the DPWH loop upon his retirement, Abergas reportedly exercised strong influence in the bidding of projects in Region VII.

The fight, however between father and son in the implementation of third district projects has its own positive impact to local contractors.

A tragic love triangle that culminated in the murder of a Dauis policeman a year ago has indicted an incumbent councilor of the town after he was pinpointed as the suspect who allegedly drove a speeding vehicle crushing to death his rival for the love of his wife.

It was a love triangle with a tragic twist as the key players were a policeman, the wife of the suspect and the town councilor himself.

The victim was hit and bumped by a Mitsubishi Pajero driven by the suspect while the policeman was on board his motorcycle. The incident happened at the Castille Borja Bridge in Dauis while the victim was on the way to the Dauis police station. The suspect's car was running in opposite direction.

In an affidavit obtained by the Post to support a case for murder filed before the Provincial Prosecutor's Office last May 8, it said that the victim was identified as PO2 Alfonso Aranas, until his death a member of the Dauis Police Station.

Other documents obtained by the Post like the affidavits of witnesses and a Spot Report dated June 20, 2007 rendered by Pelagio Rosagaran, senior police officer of the Philippine National Police, Bohol Command, showed the suspect was identified as Bonifacio Gacayan alias Bobong and a last termer councilor of Dauis.

The same police records indicated that occupying the other side of an illicit love affair was Josephine Gacayan, wife of the Dauis councilor.

According to police investigation, Gacayan had long known the illicit relation between his wife and the Dauis policeman.

This was validated by the victim's widow. She said during a confrontation with Gacayan at the Coralandia Restaurant on June 20, 2007, the municipal councilor confided to her that he already knew that his wife was carrying a forbidden relation with her husband.

On the part of Josephine Gacayan, her body language supported the belief that she and the policeman were carrying a romantic liaison.

An instance where Josephine did not show any instance of discretion that she was madly in love with the policeman was when she was hysterical after hugging the dying policeman at the Ramiro Community Hospital.

On the part of Gacayan, he saw to it that he can be counted upon for those who were in financial need like the grieving wife of the run over victim. All in all, he gave P80,000 to the widow in two separate occasions.

Hi Ben,

I know Pastor Trigo. I had attended their church services several times while I was still living in Tagbilaran. March of Faith organized "Rise Up Bohol", a 24-hour praise and worship gathering. I am not sure if they are still holding this Rise-Up Bohol activity.

I know one Pastor Trigo's daughter. Her name is Sarah. She's such a gifted praise and worship leader. She sings with so much passion and love for the Lord.

As planned, I might be home last week of June or first week of July. Mga 3 to 4 days lang akong stay sa Bohol. Basin magka-timing na magkameet ta, God willing.

Inspiration & Hope / I Was Angry at ABS-CBN Forum
May 27, 2008, 08:24:42 AM
Before I devoted my time on developing Tubag Bohol, I was excited joining a forum site run by ABS-CBN. This forum site focuses mainly on ABS-CBN shows and programs. So most people there talk about TV matters. But there is one category in that forum site named "Spiritual or Religious Inspiration" or something like that, so I started posting spiritual insights under this category.

The next day I got an email from the forum administrator notifying me that my contributed articles (excerpts from Daily Bread book) were deleted because they were inappropriate.

I was so angry. I told God this way (something like this in prayer). "Lord, if that forum site won't allow your words to be discussed or reflected on, then I have to do something to make the Internet a gateway for people to know more about you."

I don't know if the forum admin was an atheist. I was just angry that he deleted God's words but he retained indecent postings not suitable for general public view.

This kind of experience compelled me to immerse myself deeper into computer and technology. If webmasters don't believe in God, then they would hate Biblical passages in websites. There must be a way that God can be honored in the Internet.

Tubag Bohol's "Dosage of Hope" is an attempt of honoring God in the Internet in our own little ways. I am not a saint, yet I can still do some small good things for our Creator and Savior.

Inspiration & Hope / Keep Your Inner Voice Clear
May 27, 2008, 08:05:55 AM
from My Utmost For His Highest book

God’s commands to us are actually given to the life of His Son in us. Consequently, to our human nature in which God’s Son has been formed (see Galatians 4:19  ), His commands are difficult. But they become divinely easy once we obey.

Conscience is that ability within me that attaches itself to the highest standard I know, and then continually reminds me of what that standard demands that I do. It is the eye of the soul which looks out either toward God or toward what we regard as the highest standard. This explains why conscience is different in different people. If I am in the habit of continually holding God’s standard in front of me, my conscience will always direct me to God’s perfect law and indicate what I should do. The question is, will I obey? I have to make an effort to keep my conscience so sensitive that I can live without any offense toward anyone. I should be living in such perfect harmony with God’s Son that the spirit of my mind is being renewed through every circumstance of life, and that I may be able to quickly "prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God" ( Romans 12:2 ; also see Ephesians 4:23  ).

God always instructs us down to the last detail. Is my ear sensitive enough to hear even the softest whisper of the Spirit, so that I know what I should do? "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God . . ." ( Ephesians 4:30  ). He does not speak with a voice like thunderâ€" His voice is so gentle that it is easy for us to ignore. And the only thing that keeps our conscience sensitive to Him is the habit of being open to God on the inside. When you begin to debate, stop immediately. Don’t ask, "Why can’t I do this?" You are on the wrong track. There is no debating possible once your conscience speaks. Whatever it isâ€" drop it, and see that you keep your inner vision clear.

Inspiration & Hope / When We Feel Abandoned
May 27, 2008, 08:02:22 AM
Our Daily Bread

For 3 months I had a ringside seatâ€" or should I say a bird’s-eye viewâ€" of God’s amazing handiwork. Ninety feet above the floor of Norfolk Botanical Garden, workers installed a webcam focused on the nest of a family of bald eagles, and online viewers were allowed to watch.

When the eggs hatched, Mama and Papa Eagle were attentive to their offspring, taking turns hunting for food and guarding the nest. But one day when the eaglets still looked like fuzzballs with beaks, both parents disappeared. I worried that harm had come to them.

My concern was unfounded. The webcam operator enlarged the camera angle, and there was Mama Eagle perched on a nearby branch.

As I pondered this “reframed” picture, I thought of times when I have feared that God had abandoned me. The view in the forest heights of Virginia reminded me that my vision is limited. I see only a small part of the entire scene.

Moses used eagle imagery to describe God. As eagles carry their young, God carries His people (Deut. 32:11-12). Despite how it may seem, the Lord “is not far from each one of us” (Acts 17:27). This is true even when we feel abandoned. - www.rbc.org

Inspiration & Hope / A Thorn in the Flesh
May 27, 2008, 07:58:47 AM
By Joe Stowell
Daily Strength

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

A small, older, hunched-over lady greeted us with a glowing smile at the doorway of our little son Matthew’s Sunday school room. She was one of the most effective Sunday school teachers at our church, and Matt loved her. I’ll never forget the time she told me, “Pastor, God made me small and bent over so that I can be right down here where the children are! If I weren’t like this, I couldn’t relate to them so well.” I was blown away by her perspective on her plight in lifeâ€"her “thorn in the flesh.”

A thorn in the flesh is any affliction in our lives that, if we aren’t careful, can defeat us with a good dose of self-pity and embitter us toward God. But the important thing to know about our thorns is that Satan desires to use them to defeat us, while God is determined to use them for our good and His glory.

The apostle Paul is probably the most famous example of someone who was stuck with a thorn in the flesh. Paul knew right where the thorn had come from. He referred to it as a messenger of Satan. And though Paul never tells us what his thorn was, I think it’s clear that it was a serious problem to Paul. He said: “Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me” (2 Corinthians 12:8 ). God didn’t answer his prayer with a miraculous healing, but rather assured Paul that, “My grace is sufficient for you.”

It’s important to know that when God permits a thorn to remain, He gives us grace to accept it and sometimes even the grace to understand the purpose for which the thorn is intended. Paul came to realize that God permitted his affliction “to keep me from becoming conceited” (v.7). Paul was a gifted person and could have easily become proud in his abilities and accomplishments. That proud spirit would have been a disaster to his usefulness for God. So God took what Satan had intended to defeat Paul and turned it into a smashing victory by enabling him to stay appropriately humble and therefore useful.

Getting a grip on why God permits our afflictions, weaknesses, or disabilities to remain has a powerful effect on our attitudes. Instead of shaking his fist at God and grumbling about his thorn, Paul realized that God’s power was being made perfect in his weakness. That insight produced an upbeat spirit of delight and satisfaction. As Paul said, “for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses . . . For when I am weak, then I am strong” (v.10).

We normally don’t think of being strong in weakness, but that’s just how God works. He knows that if we think we are strong in and of ourselves, then we will become proud and self-sufficient. And when we feel that way, we are in reality very weak and unable to accomplish much of anything except for thinking how cool and capable we are. God has a better plan. When He needs to accomplish really great things through us, He sometimes needs to get our twisted view of ourselves out of the way. So He takes Satan’s intrusions into our lives and beats Satan at his own game! You may see it as a thorn, but God sees it as a triumph!

You don’t have to be Paul to start seeing what God is doing through your thorn. Rejoice that He cares enough to keep you from getting in the way of the great things that He wants to do through your life!

YOUR JOURNEY…

    * Read Romans 5:3-5; James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 1:3-9. What do these passages have in common?
    * What thorn is sticking in your side right now? How could God use it to glorify Himself?
    * Have you given in to your thorn to the point where it has made you bitter and defeated? How can you reclaim that ground for Christ’s glory?
    * Thorns are a mark of suffering. It is no coincidence that Jesus wore a crown of thorns before He was crucified. What does Christ’s suffering mean to you?

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy,” according to Martin Luther King Jr.

“Environment martyrs who dedicate their lives to saving the world are seldom remembered and honored.” This one was from Dan Pasia, an environment advocate.

They were from different places, but they devoted their work â€" even their lives â€" to the protection of God’s best gift to mankind: the environment.

In the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), there has been an increasing number of this kind of heroes over the years. Ricardo Serrano, 61, DENR Region 3 executive director, died from three bullet wounds in the chest in an ambush in Quezon City in 1998.

In 2004, 57-year-old DENR forester Isidro dela Peña also took three bullets in another ambush in Davao City. Orlando Flores, a Bantay  Dagat volunteer in Masinloc, Zambaless, took 20 bullets as he sat for dinner with his family in 1994.

Others were luckier. DENR forest guard Raul Zapatos of Bayugan, Agusan del Sur found himself spending four and a half years in jail after fighting illegal loggers, but was declared innocent by the Supreme Court and set free in 2005.

Jose Fabrique, a former police officer in Sibuyan, Romblon; Julio Versoza, a forest ranger assigned at the Mt. Isarog Natural Park in Camarines Sur; and Rolando Rey Recto, a councilor in Buenavista, Quezon â€" all three suffered harassment and coercion by environmental despoilers.

On April 22 this year, the name of National Anti-Environment Crime Task (NAECTAF) agent Audy Angchangco, 42, was added to the list of these environmental martyrs. Audy was shot dead by two motorcycle-riding hitmen when he stepped out of his house in Lucena City to get a clearer signal while talking on his cellphone to his sister.

The assassins made extra sure that Audy was dead: they pumped 11 bullets into his body â€" six in the head, three in the chest, one each in his right arm and right leg.

The killing of Audy Angchangco is the first major crime committed this year against environmental crusaders. That it happened right on Earth Day was both an irony and a paradox.

While the incident may be seen as an attempt to undermine the government’s political will to combat illegal logging, it, at the same time, strains what British philosopher Thomas Hobbes referred to as a “social contract” among sectors of a society to push its agenda, in this case environmental protection. Definitely, Audy’s killing shows that the enemies of the environment will be ready to break the social contract at any cost in their favor.

The outcry following Audy Angchangco’s murder was defeaning. Local and international environmental organizations banded together and condemned the killing, prompting Malacañang to decide a hero’s burial for Audy at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Fort Bonifacio.

By the Bohol Standard

The election for 2010 is now starting to heat up.

Action movie star Cesar Montano is reported to have now activated a group that formerly worked for him in his botched senatorial bid.

The multi-awarded actor met some mayors from the third district last week in Peacock Garden, a luxury mountain resort in Laya, Baclayon.

This was confirmed by League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Bohol chapter President Jagna Mayor Exuperio Lloren in a media interview.

Although Lloren came late in the afternoon, several mayors of the third districts’ 19 towns attended the meeting with Montano.

Montano was among the official senatorial candidates of the Lakas-CMD administration coalition last May 2007 synchronized national and local elections.

Indecisiveness within the family, particularly with his wife actress Sunshine Cruz, cost him his bid to enter the Senate.

It was also in that election that he attempted to run as Bohol Governor as he failed to start the senatorial campaign on time and financial woes from his official party hounded him.

He was reportedly prevailed by incumbent Gov. Erico B. Aumentado.

Asa Ka Akong Tabanog?

Naghangos kong naggukod kanimo.
Apan unsay akong mahimo?
