PETALUMA, Calif. -- It's that time of year again when dogs with unusually large heads, hairless bodies and other oddities compete to be the World's Ugliest Dog.

This year's winner? A 2-year-old mutt named Peanut, whose wild white and brown hair, bulging eyes and protruding teeth belie his sweet, energetic personality.

Peanut's owner, Holly Chandler of Greenville, North Carolina, says he was seriously burned as a puppy and she wants to use her pet to raise awareness about animal abuse.

She plans to use the $1,500 prize to pay for other animals' veterinary bills.

Capello's Russia's hopes hinge on their final match against South Korea

Russia manager Fabio Capello:

"I am very happy with the performance the team and I thought the result was unfair.

"The truth of the matter is we had chances to win it but we lost. Both teams gave it their all and unfortunately it was Belgium that was able to make it.

"We have to look forward and I said when we came to play in this World Cup after being absent for 12 years that this will be a great help for us to understand the level we need to be at in future competitions."

Belgium head coach Marc Wilmots jumps for joy after his side snatched a vital win. Picture: Getty

Belgium manager Marc Wilmots:

"[Origi] is in a good space right now. He's 19 years old. It was a bit of a surprise since he was an unknown before I selected him. Now everyone knows who he is.

"It was a hard game because the Russians were expecting us - the players were tired, it was hot, the Russians were already cramping up after 60 minutes.

"It was not an easy match but I think we deserved to win it."

Belgium substitute Divock Origi grabbed a winner two minutes from time against Russia to take his side into the last 16.

Alexander Kokorin missed the best chance of a lifeless opening half, heading wide from six yards.

Substitute Kevin Mirallas hit a post with Belgium's first shot on target with six minutes remaining.

"On the balance of play, Belgium do not deserve it, but Marc Wilmots will say, 'We have six points from two games, we are growing into this tournament'. But they have been poor. They will not go far."

But Origi turned in from Eden Hazard's cross to take Marc Wilmots' team into the knock-out phase.

Russia's hopes of following them into the last 16 now hinge on their final group match against Algeria.

Algeria moved up to second in World Cup Group H as they overcame South Korea in a six-goal thriller in Porto Alegre.

Islam Slimani ran onto a long ball to flick in the first and a Rafick Halliche header put Algeria 2-0 up.

Abdelmoumene Djabou sidefooted in a third, before Song Heung-min's low shot pulled one back as South Korea rallied.

Yacine Brahimi added Algeria's fourth and, despite Koo Ja-cheol scoring a second for Korea, Algeria held on for their first World Cup win since 1982.

Algeria, narrowly beaten by group leaders Belgium in their opening game, knew a second defeat would end their hopes of getting out of the group stage for the first time. They responded in emphatic fashion, becoming the first African team to score four goals in a World Cup game.

USA vs. Portugal: World Cup Group G Score, Grades and Post-Match Reaction

By
Michael Cummings, World Football Lead Writer
June 23, 2014

The United States kept Cristiano Ronaldo under wraps for more than 94 minutes at the Arena Amazonia. But it was the 95th minute that broke the Americans' hearts.

Ronaldo set up the tying goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Portugal rescued a 2-2 draw against the U.S. in a thrilling FIFA World Cup Group G match in Manaus, Brazil.

Jermaine Jones and Clint Dempsey scored second-half goals as the U.S. overturned Nani's fifth-minute opener for Portugal. But with the Americans seconds away from victoryâ€"and a spot in the knockout roundâ€"Ronaldo curled a perfect cross to the back post for substitute Silvestre Varela to head in and keep Portugal alive.

Stunning picture alert!

If anything sums up the pain of surrendering a lead at the World Cup, it is this brilliant image of Ghana goalkeeper Dauda with the German's celebrating in the background.

10 minutes to play in Fortaleza, the game calming down a little, what a crazy second half it has been. I've got a feeling Germany will take a draw, but Ghana have showed that Low's side aren't exactly solid.

Germany's Miroslav Klose scores

Klose has been dubbed as modest, unspectacular, and a striker that defenders say they need not worry about.

World Cup 2014: Miroslav Klose equals World Cup scoring record

By Ben Smith BBC Sport in Fortaleza
22 June 2014

When the moment came, Miroslav Klose was ready.

One outstretched right boot, one simple tap-in, was all it took to score a goal that sealed his place in the World Cup annals.

The goal was typical of Klose - it wasn't spectacular; but it was instinctive and, above all, important.

It arrived with Germany trailing Ghana 2-1 and only 19 minutes left to play in a pulsating Group G match.

Benedikt Howedes's header might have been going in; it might have struck the post. Klose wasn't going to take the chance. The 36-year-old had only been on the field for 112 seconds and had not yet touched the ball. But his instincts were sharp, and his anticipation took him beyond the defence to prod in from a yard.

As he turned away to celebrate, arms outstretched, it might have taken a moment for the significance of the goal to sink in. Those who know him say the team always comes first, but a record-equalling 15th goal in World Cup finals had been on his radar.

That the goal came against Ghana was a neat piece of symmetry because Ronaldo - the Brazil legend whose record the German has matched - had scored his last World Cup goal against the same opponents in 2006.

Ronaldo has been all too aware of the possibility of losing his record.

He spoke at a fans' festival in Fortaleza only last week, and his message to the Brazilian fans was clear. "I have one big favour to ask of you," he said. "Please cast a tiny spell on Miroslav Klose. That would be good, so that Klose scores no goals."

Whether or not his record is surpassed, Ronaldo will always be considered one of the greats of the modern game. Klose, despite this accomplishment, will not.

And yet the Lazio striker is breaking records that great players of the game have set. He joins Pele and Uwe Seeler as the third man to score at four World Cups. He has surpassed the great Gerd Muller as Germany's leading scorer with 70 goals. And significantly, Germany have never lost when he has found the net.

Germany vs. Ghana: Live Score, Highlights for World Cup 2014 Group G Game

By Ken Chin , Social Media Staff
Jun 21, 2014

We just witnessed one of the best matches of this 2014 World Cup!

Germany and Ghana battled to a 2-2 stalemate after Germany opened the scoring with a beautiful header from Mario Götze, but Ghana answered right back with back-to-back goals from Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan.

Miroslav Klose came on as a second-half sub and made an immediate impact with the equalizer in the 71st minute, scoring his 15th career World Cup goal which ties Brazil's Ronaldo for most all-time.

This result opens up Group G, and sets up the US team to advance with a win vs. Portugal on Sunday.

Germany faces off with the United States on Thursday in their Group G finale, while Ghana looks to salvage a result vs. Portugal and advance into the knockout stage.

Argentina through after Lionel Messi breaks battling Iran at the last

Barney Ronay in Belo Horizonte
Saturday 21 June 2014

What a World Cup this is turning out to be, when even a 1-0 win can have a ring of something quietly sensational about it. In Belo Horizonte, Iran produced a stirring performance against an Argentina team of all the attacking talents, at first sitting deep and defending like trench-bound soldiers, then coming out in the second half to cause problems of their own down Argentina’s vulnerable flanks, not least with four minutes left when Reza Ghoochannejhad sprinted on to a fine long pass after an Argentina corner and almost scored what might have been a sensational winning goal.

Football can be cruel though and, with the game in stoppage time, it was Lionel Messi who scored the winning goal, a reward for persistence to the last as he jinked inside after a relatively quite game and produced out of his back pocket a sublime left-foot shot that found the far corner. It was cruel for Iran against an Argentina team who were poor for much of the second half, lacking invention and incision against a supremely well-arranged defence and midfield. Genius, though, does come in handy on these occasions.

Gerry and Guiseppe Conlon's story was turned into the acclaimed 1993 film 'In The Name of the Father', directed by Jim Sheridan and starring Oscar-winner Daniel Day Lewis.

#12439
"Not only did we have to beat the criminal justice system but we also had to survive in prison. Our reality was that nightmare. They would urinate in our food, defecate in it, put glass in it. Our cell doors would be left open for us to be beaten and they would come in with batteries in socks to beat us over the head. I saw two people murdered. I saw suicides. I saw somebody set fire to himself in Long Lartin prison."
#12440
Writing for the Guardian in 2009, Conlon vividly described his ordeal during his wrongful imprisonment: "It is still hard to describe what it is like to be facing a life sentence for something you did not do. For the first two years, I still had a little bit of hope. I would hear the jangling of keys and think that this was the time the prison officers were going to come and open the cell door and set us free. But after the Maguire Seven (all also wrongly convicted) â€" my father among them â€" were arrested, we started to lose that hope.
#12441
Aftermath

Neither the bombings nor the wrongful imprisonment resulted in convictions. The bombings were most likely the work of the Balcombe Street Siege gang, who claimed responsibility. They were already serving life sentences, but were released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. Three British police officersâ€"Thomas Style, John Donaldson, and Vernon Attwellâ€"were charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, but each was found not guilty.

On 9 February 2005, the then Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair, issued an apology to the families of the 11 people imprisoned for the bombings in Guildford and Woolwich, and those related to them who were still alive, by saying, in part: "I am very sorry that they were subject to such an ordeal and injustice... they deserve to be completely and publicly exonerated."

Quashing of the Maguire verdicts

On 12 July 1990, the Home Secretary David Waddington published the Interim Report on the Maguire Case: The Inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the convictions arising out of the bomb attacks in Guildford and Woolwich in 1974, which criticised the trial judge Mr Justice Donaldson and unearthed improprieties in the handling of scientific evidence and declared the convictions unsound recommending referral back to the Court of Appeal. The report "strongly criticise[d] the decision by the prosecution at the Guildford trial not to disclose to the defence a statement supporting Mr Conlon's alibi."

The convictions of the Maguire Seven were quashed in 1991. The court held that members of the London Metropolitan Police beat some of the Seven into confessing to the crimes and withheld information that would have cleared them.
#12443
An appeal was granted on the basis of this new evidence. Lord Gifford QC represented Paul Hill, and others were represented by human rights solicitor, Gareth Peirce. The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Lane, said that the police typescripts were either a "fabrication by the police from start to finish, invented by some fertile Constabulary mind" or a "contemporaneous manuscript note ... reduced into typewritten form [and] then amended here and there in order to improve it; and, finally ... reconverted into manuscript by the various Surrey officers involved so that it could be produced as a contemporaneous note".

Either way, the police had lied, and the conclusion was that if they had lied about this, the entire evidence of the police was unreliable. The Four were released on 19 October 1989, after having their convictions quashed. Fifteen years had passed since their arrests.
#12444
Quashing of the Guildford verdict

In 1989, a detective looking at the case found typed notes from Patrick Armstrong's police interviews, which had been heavily edited. Deletions and additions had been made, and the notes had been rearranged. These notes, and their amendments, were consistent with hand-written and typed notes presented at the trial, which suggested that the hand-written notes were made after the interviews had been conducted. This implied that the police had manipulated the notes to fit with the case they wanted to present.

History / The Guildford Four and the Maguire Seven
June 22, 2014, 01:12:44 AM
The Guildford Four and the Maguire Seven were the collective names of two groups of people whose convictions in English courts in 1975 and 1976 for the Guildford pub bombings of 5 October 1974 were eventually quashed after long campaigns for justice.

The Guildford Four were convicted of bombings carried out by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), and the Maguire Seven were convicted of handling explosives found during the investigation into the bombings.

Both groups' convictions were eventually declared "incorrect and unsatisfactory" and reversed in 1989 and 1991 respectively after they had served 15-16 years in prison.

Enner Valencia’s double takes Ecuador beyond Honduras

Enner Valencia is now joint top scorer at the World Cup after scoring two goals for Ecuador against Honduras. Photograph: CJ Gunther/EPA

by Sid Lowe in Curitiba
Saturday 21 June 2014

“Yes, we can,” they sang and Ecuador could. They emerged battered and bruised but not beaten from a breathless battle in Curitiba. A cruel 93rd-minute goal had condemned Ecuador to an opening-match defeat against Switzerland and they fell behind here too. But two goals from Enner Valencia meant they still have hopes of progressing. And at the full-time whistle there was a huge roar and embraces on the touchline.

Ecuador, like Switzerland, have three points but they lead their European opponents on goal difference. The problem is that they face the leaders, France, while Switzerland take on Honduras, who lie bottom. Yet that will not be simple for the French; Honduras put up a fight here.

France lay down World Cup marker with drubbing of Switzerland

by Paul Wilson at Arena Fonte Nova
Friday 20 June 2014

Any notion that the World Cup is turning into a tournament for the smaller nations was banished when Switzerland received their comeuppance from France, a 5-2 scoreline and a defeat that could easily have been heavier making a mockery of Fifa world rankings that currently have the Swiss at six and the French at 17th.

Scorer of the opening goal and architect of the third with a blistering length of the field sprint that might have come as a surprise to some of his critics at Arsenal, Olivier Giroud was the stand-out performer in an impressive French side reshaped by Didier Deschamps since the opening victory over Honduras. Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann were stood down, the former thought to have incurred his coach’s displeasure with his reaction to being fouled in the first game by Wilson Palacios.

Why are men and women so different? Because, according to Hollywood playwright Rob Becker, they took different evolutionary paths. The caveman was a hunter, self-trained to focus on pursuit of the prey, the thrill and the kill â€" exemplified in today’s male preoccupation with quick sex and long TV. The cavewoman was a food gatherer, wandering about in groups to study colors, shapes and textures, pick out the right and ripe ones, and put them in the basket â€" which evolved into today’s ... shopping. - GOTCHA By Jarius Bondoc (The Philippine Star), June 13, 2014

Bryan Ruiz drives Costa Rica past Italy â€" and England out of tournament

Costa Rica saved the Queen. But there was no saving England. The end of the World Cup dream has been confirmed. England needed Italy to win here in order to cling to the most slender of lifelines, yet the hope was snuffed out by Costa Rica, the tournament’s most romantic surprise. The only consolation was for Her Majesty. Mario Balotelli had demanded a kiss from her if Italy triumphed.

Costa Rica have qualified from the “group of death” that was supposed to eat them alive, and nobody can say that they do not deserve it. After last Saturday’s 3-1 win over Uruguay, they went toe to toe with the four-times world champions and they were the better team.

They shrugged off the harsh decision not to award them a 43rd-minute penalty for a barge by Giorgio Chiellini on Joel Campbell to strike the decisive blow through the captain Bryan Ruiz. The Fulham forward, who spent the second half of last season on loan at PSV Eindhoven, can cherish one of the goals of his life.

Bryan Ruiz's headed goal helps Costa Rica qualify from Group D and end England's chances of making next round

Costa Rica have deservedly beaten Italy thanks to a goal by Bryan Ruiz, a player deemed unworthy of the Premier League last season. Los Ticos stride into the last 16 while England head for the nearest airport and a flight home. Italy were out-fought and out-thought today and Costa Rica fully deserve their place in the last 16. They have made the so-called Group of Death seem a doddle: and now Italy face a do-or-die showdown with Uruguay, who, as you may be aware, of good recent experience of such clashes. Hats off to Costa Rica: in their two matches at this tournament, the happiest country on the planet has given joy to the rest of the world.

clarifying this thread's title... singapore sling

The Singapore Sling is a South-East Asian cocktail. This long drink was developed sometime before 1915 by Ngiam Tong Boon, a Hainanese bartender working at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel Singapore. It was initially called the gin sling, - a sling was originally an American drink composed of spirit and water, sweetened and flavored.

People who aren't interested

Much of the above can help explain why enthusiastic football fans end up behaving as they do, but if the effects are so fundamental, why isn't everyone caught up in it? The obvious answer is that people are different. Some people define themselves by the group they're part of (eg football fans, England supporters etc), others define themselves by actively rejecting such groups.

Some people don't grow up with any particular positive association with football, and thus lack the emotion or enthusiasm that makes people fans of the game. They may enjoy different sports, or their interests may lie elsewhere. Perhaps they have a passing interest in football, but the media saturation means they've become habituated to it (ie it's so constant and familiar that they've stopped responding to it).

Whatever the reasons, for those involved, watching football can cause a dizzying range of experiences. And that's meant literally, as adrenaline can lead to dizziness.

There's a remedy for this affliction of course: just don't watch the World Cup. But then this is one sickness that millions of fans don't seem to want to be without.

When the other team scores

The same physiological mechanisms apply, but this time it's disappointment, not happiness. Disappointment has been associated with a brief decrease in dopamine activity. This then spreads through the "group mind", amplifying the grief. There's also the effect of cognitive dissonance: everyone in the room is emotionally invested in England being the best team, and their losing would undermine that. The human brain doesn't deal well with information that contradicts its previously held views, so this adds to the general anger and confusion.

Add the depressant effects of alcohol, and any loss can hit people pretty hard.

When your team scores

So those watching the football are already in a state of high arousal. The body's biological control systems, not quite grasping what's going on, can flood the body with adrenaline, as part of the fight-or-flight response. We become flooded with the hormones and glucose necessary for quick action, and this needs to be expressed somehow.

This is why the anticipation of football can be so aggravating: fans are physically primed for action, but can't vent it. If a goal is scored, as well as the select dopamine release associated with anticipation and reward, there's the relief of finally being able to vent your excitement. This may be why celebration of a goal can seem so hysterical to the uninvolved observer.

Emotions are stronger when you're part of a group

People prefer to watch major games like England World Cup matches as part of large groups; if they can't go and physically be present for the game in the venue, they'll congregate in pubs or each other's houses. While this may sound like just an excuse to hang out and drink, being part of an emotional group can have genuine psychological effects.

As mentioned, people are already emotionally invested in being part of the group and seeing their team succeed. But if you're surrounded by others who feel the same in an uncertain situation (eg watching a football match) this can make things far more intense.

People in highly aroused groups (eg angry mobs) undergo a process called "deindividuation", where the emotional state of the immediate group overrides our own judgment and thinking, making us more impulsive and less self-aware. That explains normally quite meek fans screaming horrible abuse at the TV in a crowded room.

People like being part of a successful group

Human beings are very social creatures. We evolved as part of communities, and much of who we are and what we think is based on how others in our groups behave and act towards us.

People also want status: we feel better if the group we're part of is demonstrably better than other groups that we're not part of. One way in which people can both belong to a group and experience group success is by showing support for a football team. Anyone who identifies as part of the group known as "England supporters" is going to be invested in them succeeding no matter what their chances, or who plays where, and will react accordingly when the team succeeds or fails.

The exact neurological mechanisms behind this are tricky to pin down, but some studies implicate parts of the brain such as the cortical midline structures, temporo-parietal junction and the anterior temporal gyrus, all brain regions that can show increased activity when processing social stimuli. However, this is an incredibly nuanced and complex process, as well as being hard to study in the first place.

Watching football can cause a dizzying range of emotional experiences â€" and here's why

The recent England games have been a rollercoaster of emotions for enthusiastic fans. There's the anticipation created by a long build-up, the split-second changes in the fortune of the teams during the games, the possibility of victory suddenly replaced by crushing defeat. All of this throws fans from one extreme to the other, leaving them drained and exhausted, much as though they were actually playing.

Why does this happen? What is it about football that causes such intense emotional reactions?

Scotland Fan Enjoys Uruguay Beating England at 2014 World Cup

By Mark Patterson, UK Staff Writer

England are on the brink of elimination from the World Cup after a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Luis Suarez and Uruguay, so fans of the South American nation were naturally delighted.

So too was a Scotland fan, hidden in the crowd among the Uruguayans in Sao Paulo. You can spot him in the still shot above wearing a Scotland away shirt and flying the national flag.

Blink and you'd have missed him, but clearly he didn't miss any of England's frustrating defeat.

And finally ... AIR BERLIN
It's not carrying a national football team, but this Air Berlin Airbus A320 has been turned into "Fan Force One" during the World Cup.

SPAIN
We're not sure what'll make the champions of four years ago more uncomfortable -- their 13/2 odds this year or the beaming, highly expectant fan faces adorning the back end of Iberia's Airbus A330. Nice and colorful though.
