A young Mormon missionary named Kirk Anderson went missing in 1977, in Ewell, Surrey, after he was abducted from the steps of a meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A few days later a freed Anderson made a report to the police that he had been abducted, driven to Devon, and imprisoned against his will, chained to a bed in a cottage, where Joyce Bernann McKinney (b. August 1949) â€" a former (1973) Miss Wyoming World (as Joy McKinney â€" had abducted, attempted to seduce, and then raped him. The case became known by many sobriquets, including "The Mormon sex in chains case" and "The Case of the Manacled Mormon." --Wiki

Joyce McKinney

In the late 1970s, former Miss Wyoming Joyce McKinney’s actions shocked the UKâ€"and led her straight to prison. Her strange tale of sexual obsession involves a kidnapping at gunpoint, chaining her victim to a bed for three days of forced sex, and continuing to stalk him many years later.

When she was 25, McKinney met 19-year-old Kirk Anderson through a drama course both attended at Brigham Young University, resulting in a brief affair. Racked with guilt due to his religious beliefs, Anderson fled to England on the advice of his bishop. McKinney wasn’t willing to let go of the young man, though, so she hired a private detective to track him down. Once she learned his whereabouts, she armed herself with a fake gun and a bottle of chloroform and set out in pursuit of her younger lover. Along for the ride was a devoted (or deluded) friend named Keith May.

Upon arriving in England, she rented a cottage in Devon and gave May the gun and instructions to retrieve her lover. May obediently kidnapped Anderson outside his church and drove him to the cottage, where Joyce was waiting for him. After preparing him dinner, McKinney ordered May to chain Anderson to the bed, where she assaulted him continually over the course of three days.

Anderson only escaped this ordeal by promising to marry McKinney, after which she agreed to remove his chains. He subsequently reported the crime to the police, stating that McKinney claimed her intentions were to have sex with him until she got pregnant. McKinney later asserted that her actions were in the service of freeing Anderson “from the cult of Mormonism.”

Following their arrest, McKinney skipped bail and fled to Canada with her accomplice, where she disappeared from the public eye until she was found in Atlanta trying to sell her story to a local tabloid. After Anderson returned to Utah to continue his work with the church, she was arrested for stalking him. Police found a set of chains and handcuffs in her car.

McKinney, now in her sixties, has had no other relationships and still seems fixated on Anderson. She claims to have received offers from Hollywood for the movie rights to her story (though all that’s come to pass is a 2004 documentary) and still proclaims her love for Kirk into old age, declaring “I loved him so much that I would ski naked down Mount Everest with a carnation up my nose if he asked me to.” -- http://listverse.com/

Astronomers Find Sun’s ‘Long-Lost Brother,’ Pave Way for Family Reunion
http://www.utexas.edu/
May 8, 2014

AUSTIN, Texas â€" A team of researchers led by astronomer Ivan Ramirez of The University of Texas at Austin has identified the first “sibling” of the sun â€" a star almost certainly born from the same cloud of gas and dust as our star. Ramirez’s methods will help astronomers find other solar siblings, which could lead to an understanding of how and where our sun formed, and how our solar system became hospitable for life. The work appears in the June 1 issue of The Astrophysical Journal.

Solar sibling HD 162826 is not visible to the unaided eye, but can be seen with low-power binoculars near the bright star Vega in the night sky.

“We want to know where we were born,” Ramirez said. “If we can figure out in what part of the galaxy the sun formed, we can constrain conditions on the early solar system. That could help us understand why we are here.”

Additionally, there is a chance, “small, but not zero,” Ramirez said, that these solar sibling stars could host planets that harbor life. In their earliest days within their birth cluster, he explains, collisions could have knocked chunks off of planets, and these fragments could have traveled between solar systems, and perhaps even may have been responsible for bringing primitive life to Earth. “So it could be argued that solar siblings are key candidates in the search for extraterrestrial life,” Ramirez said.

The solar sibling his team identified is called HD 162826, a star 15 percent more massive than the sun, located 110 light-years away in the constellation Hercules. The star is not visible to the unaided eye but easily can be seen with low-power binoculars, not far from the bright star Vega.

Lavisto, upon orders of Bohol PNP Director Police Senior Superintendent Dennis P. Agustin, got wind of the plight of the 17-year old girl from Butuan City during an anti-human trafficking seminar he had attended. He said a source had tipped him off that Solid Gold Bar has been engaging in human trafficking. Sources said Lavisto and his SWAT men have been tailing the ins and outs of “sex slaves” at Solid Gold Bar since last year. “We had to complete first all the legal procedures and requirements before we conducted this raid,” Lavisto said. “We believe that we got is just a tip of the iceberg.” Witnessing the inventory of the raid were provincial DOLE head Gerry Guidaben, provincial DSWD head Carmelita Tecson, members of Bohol media, and two barangay officials of Albur. Guidaben, in an interview over station DYTR and DYRD's Tagbilaran-By-Nite, has called on the public to be vigilant over illegal recruitment. The DOLE chief said that the despicable act of human trafficking may masquerade as good job offers. “Kinahanglan magbantay ta ug mag-amping ta sa mga tawo nga motanyag ug trabaho nga dili ta segurado sa kapadulngan. Ang atong buhatan sa DOLE kanunay nga bukas alang sa inyong mga pangutana,” Guidaben said over the radio.

Tecson said the DSWD would conduct a debriefing on the rescued girls. She said the DSWD, as the leading agency that protects the plight of trafficked young women, will closely coordinate with the Bohol PNP in the investigation and in the filing of appropriate charges against the perpetrators of human trafficking and prostitution. Meanwhile, Col. Agustin has warned illegal recruiters and human traffickers that the Bohol Police Provincial Office would use the might of the law in order to spare Bohol from becoming a dumpsite of “sex slaves” from Mindanao, or any part of the country for that matter. Agustin, who has ordered daily raids and buy-busts on illegal drug peddlers all over Bohol, has called on the Boholano people and all the officials of Bohol to help the police in sustaining the peace and order situation here and in protecting the province from the clout of criminals. “Alagaan natin ang Bohol. Isa lang ang Bohol. Kasama tayong lahat na itaguyod ang kapayapaan at kabutihan sa buong probinsya natin,” Agustin told the media during an earlier interview. Meanwhile, City Administrator Borja said that the city government would not tolerate any illegal operation involving minors. “The administration of City Mayor Baba Yap, in cooperation with the City Police Office led by Police Supt. Jovito Atanacio, will not allow human traffickers to thrive in Tagbilaran,” Borja said in an interview. “We are going to conduct more investigations into this kind of entertainment, and rest assured that we will not allow Tagbilaran become a haven of sex slaves,” Borja said.

On the other hand, the three rescued girls are now under the custody of the provincial DSWD office. They are among the more than ten young girls monitored by SWAT and planned to be rescued from what the police said “sex den” of Osabel's Solid Gold Bar. The three were intercepted by SWAT forces while being transported by their bouncers at a barangay in Baclayon. They were later brought back to the house of Osabel in Albur where the search warrant was served by the police. Regional Trial Court Judge Dionisio Calibo on April 28, 2014 issued the search warrant based on a strong evidence presented by the police that Osabel has allegedly violated Republic Act 9208, which has been amended as RA 10364, or the law on anti-human trafficking, an offense strongly condemned by the United Nations (UN) and the international community of free nations. During the application of the search warrant, Calibo was presented with an authenticated copy of a police blotter from Albur Police Station which revealed that sometime in September 2012 a 17-year old girl, reportedly converted into a “sex slave,” jumped over the fence of Osabel's house and sought help from Albur residents and the police.

The girl (name withheld) was recruited from Libertad, Butuan City by an unidentified agent of Osabel who convinced the innocent girl that a decent job with a good pay awaited her in Bohol. But the girl, to her surprise, landed a sordid job at Solid Gold Bar. According to statements extracted by the police from the victim, she was one of the sex workers at Solid Gold who had felt hopeless of escaping from a grimy underworld. Police record showed that the young girl, together with other young women who were kept at the house of Osabel, was transported to Solid Gold Bar every night from Osabel's palatial residence in Albur. The victim said she had no means of escaping from the clutches of Osabel since there are guards at Solid Gold who kept an eye on them. “We believe that these young girls are forced to enter into prostitution after they were being illegally recruited from outside the province of Bohol,” Lavisto told station DYTR and DYRD's Tagbilaran-By-Nite Program. “We have been monitoring the operations of Solid Gold Bar,” Lavisto said, “and we conclude that they are doing something illegal in violation of a national law, which is the anti-human trafficking law.”

Losing no time, City Mayor John Geesnell “Baba” Yap immediately ordered the closure of Solid Gold KTV Bar, which for the last 12 years has been renting for P21,000 a month the second and third floors of an old commercial building near Tagbilaran City Square. Mayor Yap's order, as confirmed by City Administrator Edi Borja, was served by the city police and City Hall officials shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday. “Since the owner was not around last night, the assigned security guard received the order and complied with it,” Borja told Bohol Sunday Post last night. “If found in violation of city and national laws, Solid Bar KTV Bar will be permanently closed,” Borja said. Meanwhile, Geraldo “Gerry” Osabel, owner of Solid Gold Bar, will be facing a non-bailable offense in relation to his alleged spearheading of illegal recruitment of young girls from Mindanao who were forced to work at his bar, according to Police Senior Inspector Roland Desiree Lavisto, head of the Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) of the Bohol Provincial Office (BPPO).

The lure of big money must have encouraged the young girls from Mindanao to cross the Bohol seas to find employment. Easily swayed by the sugar-coated sales pitches of human trafficking recruiters, the young girls have no second thoughts saying yes to the lucrative offer of potential employment. By the sight of the palatial mansion, owned by Osabel, which is made as living quarters of sex workers, the young girls were then convinced to work in the KTV Bar as guest relations officers (GRO). Nothing wrong there if they were just allowed as far as servicing the needs of customers like serving them food and drinks. The arrangement becomes scandalous when the girls are allowed to go out with customers for a “one night stand.” What is worst in working in the KTV bar is when the girls were used as conduits in alleged illegal drug sales. In the case of the Solid Gold GRO joint, drug transactions are said to be going on between the girls and drug users, according to a classified police intelligent memo. That makes the establishment fronting as a drug den aside from being a source of sexual services, the intelligence report said.

Solid Gold sex ‘farm' busted!

For 12 years, nobody has the faintest idea that a three-storey building at the corner of E. Jacinto and H. Grupo Streets is maintaining a “sex farm” somewhere in Barangay Sta. Fe, Alburquerque town. Until Friday night when a combined posse of SWAT operatives and personnel of both Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) swooped down on the unsuspecting residential house yielding three young girls. Just like in big league basketball, a professional team has its own “farm team,” where it sources its players en route to the professional league. Believed to be victims of human trafficking, the three young girls were found to have been working at a popular night outpost known as Solid Gold KTV Bar. The three girls were rescued by SWAT forces Friday night from the bar owner's residential house in Barangay Sta. Fe, Alburquerque town.

The girls would project themselves from a dark corner of the KTV bar and the customers would choose who they want for company in the table. For every lady's drink that the customer would buy at P150, the girl gets P50.

Another service offered is sex wherein the customer would pay a bar fine of P1,500, of which P500 goes to the girl. The girls would line for a “show-up” and the customer picks out who to take out. The GROs can also be taken to a VIP room, if the customer wants with the same deal on the lady's drink in addition to the rent for the room.

CLOSURE ORDER

City Mayor Yap issued yesterday a closure order for Solid Gold following the arrest of three minors working in said city night spot.

Authorities from City Hall padlocked the establishment last night as there was nobody to receive the closure order when it was served earlier during the day. The closure order will be enforced while investigation will continue on why minors were hired at the night pub.

City Hall will check tomorrow the real identities and ages of the workers of Solid Gold, most of whom are not revealing their real identities to their customers.

The escape of the 17-year-old girl in 2012 spilled the beans and only confirmed the extent of the prostitution in the province.

According to the victim, they were housed in Osabel's property in barangay Sta. Fe, Alburquerque and a service vehicle would transport them to Solid Gold Bar at night.

MINORS AS GROs

Bar fine, lady's drink and an alias to hide one's identitythe routine method in a club where minors, mostly  from Mindanao ended up in a search for greener pasture in Bohol.

A recruiter came to their village and convinced their parents that a decent job awaits them in Bohol to help augment the family's income. However, the skimpy suit, as required by the floor manager, surprised them.

As their first night of duty unfolded, the girls realized their role was to lure men and buy them lady's drinks.

The raiding team also recovered a Caspian caliber .45 pistol with serial no. 228427, firearm License Card which is subject for verification, permit to carry firearms outside residence,  three magazines of caliber 45, and 19 live ammunition of caliber .45.

The raid was witnessed by his wife, Rizalina Aventorado Osabel, Office of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office head Carmelita Tecson, DOLE-Bohol's German Guidaben, Barangay Councilor Ranulfo Bitoy and Barangay Captain Benedicto Cabanlit and Mike Ligalig of the local media.

Lavisto's team brought Osabel to Camp Dagohoy and was examined by a physician from Ramiro Community Hospital.

The medical check up showed that he had high blood pressure and in consideration that he had once suffered a stroke, Osabel was issued the permission to be admitted at the Englewood Hospital in Baclayon with a police escort.

Lavisto said that based on the information they gathered, Osabel is from Mindanao where he was suspected to have hired several women to work at his bar in the city.

Regional Trial Court (RTC 50-Loay) Presiding Judge Dionisio Calibo Jr. issued the search warrant in relation to Osabel's violation of Republic Act 9208 or Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003 as expanded in RA 10364 or the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012.

Osabel operates the Solid Gold KTV Bar where the 17-year-old victim had escaped way back in 2012.

When operatives swooped down on his residence last Friday evening, only three minors were caught while others could have been been transported to Solid Gold in the city.

After the documentation, the girls were turned over to the local office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) where they will be temporarily stay for the scheduled  debriefing and counseling.
#12316
Meanwhile, City Mayor Baba Yap ordered the closure of the night spot following the rescue of the three minors working as GROs. The identities of the minors were not disclosed by the raiding team.

The combined operation came as a prelude to an expanded police dragnet as the province has been identified as a source of manpower, including minors who are being exploited in the sex trade in big cities in the country.

The Chronicle learned that the raid conducted at Osabel's residence came as an off shot of a revelation done by a 17-year-old victim from Butuan City, Agusan del Norte who managed to escape sometime in September 2012 from Solid Gold. In fact, her ordeal was recorded at the Alburquerque police station a couple of years ago.

The girl had already returned home while authorities pursued their investigation and placed on surveilance the operation of the bar where she used to work.

Written by The Bohol Chronicle

A combined team swooped down the residence of the owner of Solid Gold, a night spot in downtown area where minors are hired as guest relations officers (GRO) during the past 12 years.

The owner of the bar was identified as Gerardo Osabel, whose residence in barangay Sta Fe. Alburquerque town yielded at least three minors during the first operation conducted by operatives from the  Provincial Public Safety Company/Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team led by PInsp. Roland Lavisto and a team from the Alburquerque Police Station at 7:30pm last Friday.

Three minors from Butuan City in Mindanao were rescued from a human trafficking ring in Bohol province Friday night, a radio report said Saturday.

Members of the Bohol police and Special Weapons and Tactics teams rescued the three in a house in Barangay Sta. Fe in Alburquerque town, Bombo Radyo reported.

The report quoted SWAT chief Senior Inspector Roland Lavisto as saying the police teams raided the house on the strength of a search warrant from the Loay, Bohol regional trial court.

Investigation showed the three were forced to work in a bar in Tagbilaran City, the report said.

The minors are under the care of the Department of Social Welfare and Development, which is looking for their relatives. â€" Joel Locsin/JDS, GMA News

History / Re: Manila massacre
May 07, 2014, 07:37:47 PM
The Manila massacre was said to be one of several major war crimes committed by the Imperial Japanese Army, as judged by the postwar military tribunal. Although General Yamashita didn't have any control over the troops in the city during the Battle of Manila, he was nonetheless judged to be responsible and executed. The Yamashita standard â€" regarding a commander's responsibility for action taken by anyone under his command â€" is based upon his trial.

To preserve as large a force as possible to continue defensive operations in rural Luzon, Imperial Japanese Army General Tomoyuki Yamashita had insisted on a complete withdrawal of Japanese troops from Manila. However, this was not realized because of objections from Imperial headquarters. 10,000 marines under Vice Admiral Iwabuchi Sanji remained in Manila along with some IJA stragglers.

Various credible Western and Eastern sources agree that the death toll was at least 100,000, tallying to around 10% of the population of the city. The massacre was at its worst in the Battle of Manila, in which the Allies shelled the city of Manila to drive out the Japanese. In this shelling, the city of Manila was totally destroyed. By the time the Japanese were driven out, the city was in ruins, becoming the second most severely damaged Allied capital city during the war, the first being Warsaw in Poland. It is said that during lulls in the battle for control of the city, Japanese troops took out their anger and frustration on the civilians caught in the crossfire. A total of 100,000 civilian deaths was estimated after the battle, but the proportions of casualties due to Allied artillery versus Japanese troops is not known.

Manila (AFP) - Longtime allies the Philippines and the United States start annual, large-scale military exercises on Monday after President Barack Obama vowed "ironclad" backing for Manila as a territorial dispute with China simmers.

The two-week Balikatan or "shoulder-to-shoulder" drills involving 5,500 American and Filipino soldiers begin just days after Obama assured Manila his government was committed to a 1951 mutual defence treaty.

The allies last week bolstered their ties with a new defence agreement signed ahead of a visit by Obama giving American forces greater access to Philippine bases -- part of a US rebalancing of military power towards rising Asia.

"What President Obama said was a reaffirmation of our treaty," Philippine military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Zagala said.

"It is very important to note that this is really relevant right now that we have a present threat," he added, referring to an increasingly tense row with China over reefs and outcrops in the South China Sea, which Manila calls the West Philippine Sea.

Obama's four-nation Asian tour was dominated by worsening maritime tensions between Beijing and Washington's allies in the region, which have triggered fears of military conflict.

China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, which is believed to contain huge deposits of oil and gas, even waters and islands or reefs close to its neighbours.

The Philippines, which has one of the weakest militaries in the region, has repeatedly called on the United States for help as China has increased military and diplomatic pressure to take control of the contested areas.

History / Slaughter At The Opera
May 05, 2014, 11:17:33 AM

The most deadly anarchist terror assaultâ€"72 dead or seriously injuredâ€"happened in Barcelona in 1893, at the Liceu opera house.

The opera season opened on November 8, three days before the anniversary of Spies’s and his accomplices’ execution. Barcelona’s elite came to see a performance of Rossini’s William Tell, a tale of the downtrodden rebelling against society’s tyrants. During the second act, two bombs were thrown from the gallery. One struck the back of a patron, and its fuse went out. But the other’s force ripped through human bodies, tore up the floor, and shattered the beams above. Pandemonium ensued, people trampling one another as they fought for the exits. Men abandoned the ladies they had escorted in the mad, terrified scramble. The wounded staggered outside, dresses torn, blood staining starched shirt fronts.

Queen-regent Christina declared a state of emergency and suspended the city’s constitutional liberties. Hundreds of suspects were thrown into the dungeons of Montjuich castle, where merciless torture produced the name “Santiago Salvador” as the terrorist of Teatro Liceu.

Salvador was arrested in January 1894 and confessed, calling the bombing an act of revenge for the execution of a fellow anarchist named Pallas. Salvador reportedly said, “I conceived of a plan in which it was possible to terrorize those who had enjoyed killing him and who believed that they had nothing to fear.” The opera house was an ideal target because it was exclusively attended by the rich, who had always mocked him and his fellow workers.

Unable to believe that Salvador had acted alone, authorities continued the Inquisition-like tortures that eventually forced six more prisoners to confess. All were executed in April, and Salvador was sent to his death in November. -- http://listverse.com/

A New Element is Discovered: Scientists in Germany Create and Observe Element 117, Name Coming Soon
By Rodrigo Ugarte (staff@latinpost.com)
First Posted: May 04, 2014 05:29 PM EDT

It is not often that a new element is added to the periodic table but it could be soon that high schools around the world will have their charts labeling all of the known elements updated.

Back in 2010, a group of American and Russian scientists first discovered element 117 in a joint collaboration. Temporarily known as ununseptium, the super heavy element is created by bombarding Berkelium (atomic number 97) with Calcium ions at high speed, according to Forbes. This created a fusion of the calcium atoms and Berkelium to produce the new element, which then quickly decayed into elements 115 and 113 as observed by the joint scientific team.

Forbes explains that like any other super heavy element, ununseptium is highly unstable and only exists for fractions of seconds before decaying. Scientists even discovered the element through its decay. However, through their discovery scientists also found that two isotopes produced during decay are isotopes of elements 103 and 105, which are among the most stable super heavy isotopes.

Police Officer 3 Araceli Wagwag of Danao Police Station described Romagos as aggressive in his campaign against criminalities in his area of responsibility and went hands-on in investigation and prosecution.

She said responding cops managed to rush Romagos to the San Miguel Municipal Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Eduardo Abellar.

Investigators could not conclude yet on the motive and the identity of the gunmen.

Danao Mayor Natividad Gonzaga seeks justice for Romagos.

Police Provincial Director Dennis Agustin immediately sent a team to hunt down the gunmen and ordered for the creation of a task group that will undertake a parallel investigation.

Danao Police Station still awaits official directive from higher headquarters on the designation of a new officer in charge at their station.

For his part, SPO4 Dario Nuez of San Miguel police station said they immediately put up some road blocks on all possible exit points of the criminals.

Nuez said he had once been assigned in Danao and having known the victim personally, he and some comrades rushed to the hospital and saw the gunshot wounds on the victim's head and some parts of the body./JMD (FREEMAN)

Danao - Bohol / Danao police chief killed
May 04, 2014, 05:36:37 PM
By Angeline Valencia (The Freeman) | Updated May 2, 2014 - 12:00am

DANAO, Bohol, Philippines â€" By chance, motorcycle-riding armed tandem spotted a target - the officer-in-charge of Danao Police Station - by a roadside in Barangay Santa Fe here at around 7:30 p.m. of April 29  and took the opportunity to accomplish what seemed to be a mission.

The two gunmen remain at large, leaving no hint on their identities except unfamiliar faces and uncertain model of motorcycle used, and that they used caliber .45 pistol.

The 47-year-old victim, SPO1 Noel E. Romagos, was on his motorcycle by a roadside when the two men riding a motorcycle slowed down and glanced at him.

When they had recognized his semblance, they turned around and pretended to ask for a direction.

In a split of a second, the backrider pumped bullets on Romagos, hitting his head and some parts of the body.

Romagos was waiting for his wife, Evelyn, who had to fetch a relative in a nearby house.

They were already heading home to Barangay Cantubod and must have been asked to fetch someone in Barangay Santa Fe, about a kilometer to their residence.

We're just now getting our first look at the what the statue will look like, thanks to images of the mold released by The Satanic Temple this week. Unfortunately for the group's activist aims, there hasn't been much progress on securing a spot for the statue at the Capitol in Oklahoma, one of the most Christian states in the US. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is currently challenging the ten commandments statue in court on grounds that it violates the Constitution's "establishment clause" against a national religion, and Oklahoma has prohibited applications for additional statues pending the completion of that case.

Greaves has made it clear that the group would no longer petition to have the statue installed should the ten commandments monument be removed, but he isn't concerned about finding somewhere else to place the statue should they fail to get permission in Oklahoma. "There are no shortage of public locations across the US where religious monuments await a contrasting voice," he tells Vice, which first published photos of the statue. And they're prepared should demonstrators destroy the statue: they're holding onto the cast and plan to take out an insurance policy on the statue.

A Satanist statue cast in bronze is just months away from completion, and activists hope that it will find a home on the lawn of the Oklahoma State Capitol. Ultimately, the statue â€" which features the seven-foot tall, horned figure of Baphomet fawned upon by two exultant children â€" is intended to stand directly next to a highly controversial monument of the ten commandments that was donated by a state legislator in 2012 and subsequently placed on the grounds of the Capitol.

The pagan Baphomet figure, complete with a goat head, angel wings, and a beard, comes from a recently-formed New York group identifying as The Satanic Temple, which raised over $28,000 on Indiegogo earlier this year to commission a sculptor and create the piece. Satanic Temple spokesperson Lucian Greaves tells ABC News that the statue is a symbol to "celebrate our progress as a pluralistic nation founded on secular law."

Let’s try a middle path. We’re not all going to become vegetarians, but most of us can stop giving our money to factory farmsâ€"the biggest and worst offenders, from a pollution and public health perspective.

We can eat less meat than we currently do, especially meat from methane-releasing ruminants (cattle, sheep, goats, etc.).

Just because a sudden global conversion to vegetarianism would have jarring effects doesn’t mean we can’t gradually reduce our consumption of meat, giving the market time to adjust. We not only can; we must. After all, with the world’s population slated to grow to 9 billion by 2050, we’ll be needing to take some of the 25 percent of the world’s land area back from the cows.
#12351
So what would be the result, in an all-vegetarian world, of the combination of widespread unemployment and economic disruption, millions of square miles of available land, and a lowered risk of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea?

I can only conclude that people would band together to form communes in order to escape capitalism’s ruthlessness, squat on the former pasture land, and adopt a lifestyle of free love.

I kid. Mostly. It’s easy to get carried away when you’re speculating about unlikely scenariosâ€"and sudden intercontinental vegetarianism is very much an unlikely scenario.

But if the result of a worldwide shift to a plant-based diet sounds like a right-winger’s worst nightmare, it’s worth pointing out that continuing to eat as much meat as we currently do promises to result in a left-winger’s worst nightmare: In a world of untrammeled global warming, where disastrous weather events are routine, global conflicts will increase, only the wealthy will thrive, and the poor will suffer.
#12352
A third major ramification of global vegetarianism would be that the risk of antibiotic-resistant infections would plummet.

Currently, the routine use of antibiotics in animal farming to promote weight gain and prevent illness in unsanitary conditions is a major contributor to antibiotic resistance.

Last year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that at least 2 million Americans fall ill from antibiotic-resistant pathogens every year and declared that “much of antibiotic use in animals is unnecessary and inappropriate and makes everyone less safe.”

The overprescription of antibiotics for humans plays a big role in antibiotic resistance, but eradicating the factory farms from which many antibiotic-resistant bacteria emerge would make it more likely that we could continue to count on antibiotics to cure serious illnesses.

(For a sense of what a “post-antibiotics future” would look like, read Maryn McKenna’s amazing article on the topic for Medium and her story about a possible solution for chicken farming in Slate.)
#12353
A second major ramification of global vegetarianism would be expanses of new land available. Currently, grazing land for ruminantsâ€"cows and their kinâ€"accounts for a staggering 26 percent of the world’s ice-free land surface.

The Dutch scientists predict that 2.7 billion hectares (about 10.4 million square miles) of that grazing land would be freed up by global vegetarianism, along with 100 million hectares (about 386,000 square miles) of land that’s currently used to grow crops for livestock.

Not all of this land would be suitable for humans, but surely it stands to reason that this sudden influx of new territory would make land much cheaper on the whole.
#12354
The production and sale of animal products account for 1.3 billion people’s jobs, and 987 million of those people are poor. If demand for meat were to disappear overnight, those people’s livelihoods would disappear, and they would have to find new ways of making money.

Now, some of themâ€"like the industrial farmers who grow the corn that currently goes to feed animals on factory farmsâ€"would be in a position to adapt by shifting to in-demand plant-based food production.

Others, namely the “huge number of people involved in livestock for lack of an alternative, particularly in Africa and Asia,” would probably be out of luck. (Things would be better for the global poor involved in the livestock trade if everyone continued to consume other animal products, such as eggs, milk, and wool, than if everyone decided to go vegan.)

As the economy adjusted to the sudden lack of demand for meat products, we would expect to see widespread suffering and social unrest.
#12355
The Dutch researchers didn’t take into account what else might happen if everyone gave up meat. “In this scenario study we have ignored possible socio-economic implications such as the effect of health changes on GDP and population numbers,” wrote Elke Stehfest and her colleagues.

“We have not analyzed the agro-economic consequences of the dietary changes and its implications; such consequences might not only involve transition costs, but also impacts on land prices. The costs that are associated with this transition might obviously offset some of the gains discussed here.”

Indeed. If the world actually did collectively go vegetarian or vegan over the course of a decade or two, it’s reasonable to think the economy would tank.

According to “Livestock’s Long Shadow,” the influential 2006 U.N. report about meat’s devastating environmental effects, livestock production accounts for 1.4 percent of the world’s total GDP.
#12356
But what if the convincing were the easy part? Suppose everyone in the world voluntarily stopped eating meat, en masse. I know it’s not actually going to happen.

But the best-case scenario from a climate perspective would be if all 7 billion of us woke up one day and realized that PETA was right all along. If this collective change of spirit came to pass, like Peter Singer’s dearest fantasy come true, what would the ramifications be?

At least one research team has run the numbers on what global veganism would mean for the planet. In 2009 researchers from the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency published their projections of the greenhouse gas consequences if humanity came to eat less meat, no meat, or no animal products at all.

The researchers predicted that universal veganism would reduce agriculture-related carbon emissions by 17 percent, methane emissions by 24 percent, and nitrous oxide emissions by 21 percent by 2050.

Universal vegetarianism would result in similarly impressive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. What’s more, the Dutch researchers found that worldwide vegetarianism or veganism would achieve these gains at a much lower cost than a purely energy-focused intervention involving carbon taxes and renewable energy technology.

The upshot: Universal eschewal of meat wouldn’t single-handedly stave off global warming, but it would go a long way toward mitigating climate change.

The meat industry is one of the top contributors to climate change, directly and indirectly producing about 14.5 percent of the world’s anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and global meat consumption is on the rise.

People generally like eating meatâ€"when poor people start making more money, they almost invariably start buying more meat.

As the population grows and eats more animal products, the consequences for climate change, pollution, and land use could be catastrophic.

Attempts to reduce meat consumption usually focus on baby stepsâ€"Meatless Monday and “vegan before 6,” passable fake chicken, and in vitro burgers.

If the world is going to eat less meat, it’s going to have to be coaxed and cajoled into doing it, according to conventional wisdom.

Researchers at the Loma Linda University wanted to find out if laughter altered its effects.

Dr Lee Berk, who also worked on the study, said: "It's simple, the less stress you have the better your memory.

"Humour reduces detrimental stress hormones like cortisol that decrease memory hippocampal neurons, lowers your blood pressure, and increases blood flow and your mood state.

"The act of laughter -- or simply enjoying some humour -- increases the release of endorphins and dopamine in the brain, which provides a sense of pleasure and reward."

Gurinder Singh, who led the study, showed a 20-minute laugh-inducing funny video to a group of healthy elderly individuals and a group of elderly people with diabetes.

The groups where then asked to complete a memory assessment that measured their learning, recall, and sight recognition.

Their performance was compared to a control group of elderly people who also completed the memory assessment, but were not shown a funny video.

The research team found a significant decrease in cortisol concentrations among both groups who watched the video.

“Our research findings offer potential clinical and rehabilitative benefits that can be applied to wellness programmes for the elderly," Dr Bains said.

Laughing can better memory
http://www.thedailystar.net/
Published: 12:00 am Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Laughing could dramatically improve your health - and be as good for you as a deep state of meditation, researchers have found.

Researchers say that laughter can help minimise the damage stress hormones cause. They say it should be used more as a form of therapy.

Recent research has shown that the stress hormone cortisol damages certain neurons in the brain and can negatively affect memory and learning ability in the elderly.

Erwin Schrödinger, the Austrian quantum physicist, has been celebrated in a Google Doodle which depicts his most widely-known contribution to the field: the Schrödinger’s Cat mind experiment.

In the hypothetical experiment, which the physicist devised in 1935, a cat is placed in a sealed box along with a radioactive sample, a Geiger counter and a bottle of poison.

If the Geiger counter detects that the radioactive material has decayed, it will trigger the smashing of the bottle of poison and the cat will be killed.

The experiment was designed to illustrate the flaws of the ‘Copenhagen interpretation’ of quantum mechanics, which states that a particle exists in all states at once until observed.

If the Copenhagen interpretation suggests the radioactive material can have simultaneously decayed and not decayed in the sealed environment, then it follows the cat too is both alive and dead until the box is opened.

Good vs. bad cholesterol

As with dietary fat, there are good and bad types of cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is the "good" kind of cholesterol found in your blood. LDL cholesterol is the "bad” kind. The key is to keep LDL levels low while, conversely, low HDL can be a marker for increased cardiovascular risk. High levels of HDL cholesterol may help protect against heart disease and stroke, while high levels of LDL cholesterol can clog arteries, increasing your risk.

Research shows that there is only a weak link between the amount of cholesterol you eat and your blood cholesterol levels. The biggest influence on your total and LDL cholesterol is the type of fats you eatâ€"not your dietary cholesterol. So instead of counting cholesterol, simply focus on replacing bad fats with good fats.

Monounsaturated fats lower total and bad (LDL) cholesterol levels, while increasing good cholesterol (HDL).

Polyunsaturated fats lower triglycerides and fight inflammation.

Saturated fats may raise your blood cholesterol.

Trans fats are the worst types of fat since they not only raise your bad LDL cholesterol, but also lower the good HDL cholesterol.

The truth about dietary fat and cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty, wax-like substance that your body needs to function properly. In and of itself, cholesterol isn’t bad. But when you get too much of it, it can have a negative impact on your health.

Cholesterol comes from two sources: your body and food. Your body (specifically, the liver) produces some of the cholesterol you need naturally. But you also get cholesterol directly from any animal products you eat, such as eggs, meat, and dairy. Together, these two sources contribute to your blood cholesterol level.

Choosing the best omega-3 supplement

With so many omega-3 and fish oil supplements and fortified foods, making the right choice can be tricky. These guidelines can help.

Avoid products that don’t list the source of their omega-3s. Does the package list the source of omega-3 fatty acids? If not, chances are it’s ALA (sometimes from plain old canola or soybean oil), which most Westerners already get plenty of.

Don’t fall for fortified foods. Many fortified foods (such as margarine, eggs, and milk) claim to be high in omega-3 fatty acids, but often, the real amount of omega-3 is miniscule.

Look for the total amount of EPA and DHA on the label. The bottle may say 1,000 milligrams of fish oil, but it’s the amount of omega-3 that matters. Read the small print. It may show only 300 mg of EPA and DHA (sometimes listed as “omega-3 fatty acids”), which means you’d have to take three capsules to get close to 1,000 milligrams of omega-3.

Choose supplements that are mercury-free, pharmaceutical grade and molecularly distilled. Make sure the supplement contains both DHA and EPA. They may be hard to find, but supplements with higher concentrations of EPA are better.

Fish oil supplements can cause stomach upset and belching, especially when you first start taking them. To reduce these side effects, take them with food. You may also want to start with a low dose and gradually increase it, or divide the dose among your three meals.

How much omega-3 do I need?

The American Heart Association recommends consuming 1â€"3 grams per day of EPA and DHA (1 gram = 1,000 milligrams). For the treatment of mental health issues, including depression and ADHD, look for supplements that are high in EPA, which has been shown to elevate and stabilize mood. Aim for at least 1,000 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids per day.

There are several different types of omega-3 fatty acids:

EPA and DHA â€" Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have the most research to back up their health benefits. Both are found in abundance in cold-water fatty fish.

ALA â€" Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) comes from plants. Studies suggest that it’s a less potent form of omega-3 than EPA and DHA. The best sources include flaxseed, walnuts, and canola oil.

Fish: The best food source of omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fats are a type of essential fatty acid, meaning they are essential to health, but your body can’t make them. You can only get omega-3 fats from food.

The best sources are fatty fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, anchovies, or sardines, or high-quality cold-water fish oil supplements. Canned albacore tuna and lake trout can also be good sources, depending on how the fish were raised and processed.

If you’re a vegetarian or you don’t like fish, you can still get your omega-3 fix by eating algae (which is high in DHA) or taking a fish oil or algae supplement.

Omega-3 fatty acids and mental health

Omega-3 fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain. Research indicates that they play a vital role in cognitive function (memory, problem-solving abilities, etc.) as well as emotional health.
Getting more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet can help you battle fatigue, sharpen your memory, and balance your mood. Studies have shown that omega-3s can be helpful in the treatment of depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and bipolar disorder.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Superfats for the brain and heart

Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fat. While all types of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are good for you, omega-3 fats are proving to be especially beneficial.

We’re still learning about the many benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, but research has shown that they can:

Prevent and reduce the symptoms of depression

Protect against memory loss and dementia

Reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer

Ease arthritis, joint pain, and inflammatory skin conditions

Support a healthy pregnancy

Damaged fat: When good fats go bad

A good fat can become bad if heat, light, or oxygen damages it. Polyunsaturated fats are the most fragile. Oils that are high in polyunsaturated fats (such as flaxseed oil) must be refrigerated and kept in an opaque container. Cooking with these oils also damages the fats. Never use oils, seeds, or nuts after they begin to smell or taste rank or bitter.

Getting more good fats in your diet

Okay, so you realize you need to reduce saturated fat and avoid trans fat… but how do you get the healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats everyone keeps talking about?

The best sources of healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and fish.

Cook with olive oil. Use olive oil for stovetop cooking, rather than butter, stick margarine, or lard. For baking, try canola or vegetable oil.

Eat more avocados. Try them in sandwiches or salads or make guacamole. Along with being loaded with heart and brain-healthy fats, they make for a filling and satisfying meal.

Reach for the nuts. You can also add nuts to vegetable dishes or use them instead of breadcrumbs on chicken or fish.

Snack on olives. Olives are high in healthy monounsaturated fats. But unlike most other high-fat foods, they make for a low-calorie snack when eaten on their own. Try them plain or make a tapenade for dipping.

Dress your own salad. Commercial salad dressings are often high in saturated fat or made with damaged trans fat oils. Create your own healthy dressings with high-quality, cold-pressed olive oil, flaxseed oil, or sesame oil.

Saturated fats: Limit or reduce this fat

Many of us can benefit from replacing some of the saturated fats in our diet with healthy fats. Saturated fats are mainly found in animal products such as red meat and whole milk dairy products. Poultry and fish also contain saturated fat, but less than red meat.

Simple ways to reduce saturated fat

Eat less red meat (beef, pork, or lamb) and more fish and chicken

Go for lean cuts of meat, and stick to white meat, which has less saturated fat.

Bake, broil, or grill instead of frying.

Remove the skin from chicken and trim as much fat off of meat as possible before cooking.

Avoid breaded meats and vegetables and deep-fried foods.

Choose low-fat milk and lower-fat cheeses like mozzarella whenever possible; enjoy full-fat dairy in moderation.

Use liquid vegetable oils such as olive oil or canola oil instead of lard, shortening, or butter.

Avoid cream and cheese sauces, or have them served on the side.

Be a trans fat detective

When shopping, read the labels and watch out for “partially hydrogenated oil” in the ingredients. Even if the food claims to be trans fat-free, this ingredient makes it suspect.

With margarine, choose the soft-tub versions, and make sure the product has zero grams of trans fat and no partially hydrogenated oils.

When eating out, put fried foods, biscuits, and other baked goods on your “skip” list. Avoid these products unless you know that the restaurant has eliminated trans fat.

Avoid fast food. Most states have no labeling regulations for fast food, and it can even be advertised as cholesterol-free when cooked in vegetable oil.

When eating out, ask your server or counter person what type of oil your food will be cooked in. If it’s partially hydrogenated oil, run the other way or ask if your food can be prepared using olive oil, which most restaurants have in stock.

Sources of trans fats

Many people think of margarine when they picture trans fats, and it’s true that some margarines are loaded with them. However, the primary source of trans fats in the Western diet comes from commercially prepared baked goods and snack foods:

Baked goods â€" cookies, crackers, cakes, muffins, pie crusts, pizza dough, and some breads like hamburger buns

Fried foods â€" doughnuts, French fries, fried chicken, chicken nuggets, and hard taco shells

Snack foods â€" potato, corn, and tortilla chips; candy; packaged or microwave popcorn

Solid fats â€" stick margarine and semi-solid vegetable shortening

Pre-mixed products â€" cake mix, pancake mix, and chocolate drink mix

Trans fat: eliminate this bad fat from your diet

When focusing on healthy fats, a good place to start is eliminating your consumption of trans fats. A trans fat is a normal fat molecule that has been twisted and deformed during a process called hydrogenation. During this process, liquid vegetable oil is heated and combined with hydrogen gas. Partially hydrogenating vegetable oils makes them more stable and less likely to spoil, which is very good for food manufacturersâ€"and very bad for you.

No amount of trans fats is healthy. Trans fats contribute to major health problems, from heart disease to cancer.

How much fat is too much?

How much fat is too much depends on your lifestyle, your weight, your age, and most importantly the state of your health. The USDA recommends that the average individual:

Keep total fat intake to 20-35% of calories

Limit saturated fats to less than 10% of your calories (200 calories for a 2000 calorie diet)

Limit trans fats to 1% of calories (2 grams per day for a 2000 calorie diet)
