Home Remedy Treatments for Gallbladder Problems

The following home remedies for gallbladder trouble are so quick and easy there's no reason not to try them -- especially because you'll find them in your very own kitchen.

Home Remedies from the Cupboard

Coffee. New studies are finding that drinking a couple of cups of java a day can prevent gallstones. One study discovered that men who drank 2 to 3 cups of regular coffee a day cut their risk of developing gallstones by 40 percent. Four cups a day reduced the risk by 45 percent. Researchers are not sure what it is about coffee that helps reduce the risk of forming gallstones, but the effect was the same whether it was cheap, store-bought instant coffee or high-priced espresso. It might be the caffeine; however, teas and soft drinks containing caffeine did not produce the same effect -- and neither did decaffeinated coffee.

High-fiber cereal. People who eat a sugary, high-fat diet probably will have more problems with their gallstones. But adding in some fiber-rich foods and avoiding the sugary snacks and fatty foods can help you keep your gallbladder healthy. Grabbing some cereal in the morning will also get something in your tummy. Studies have shown that going for long periods without eating, such as skipping breakfast, can make you more prone to getting a gallstone.

Lentils. An interesting study found that women who ate loads of lentils, nuts, beans, peas, lima beans, and oranges were more resistant to gallbladder attacks than women who didn't eat much of the stuff.

Who's at Risk?

Pregnancy, obesity, diabetes, liver disease, a sedentary lifestyle, a high fat diet, and certain forms of anemia can all increase the risk of gallstones. People who are overweight and lose and gain weight repeatedly are more susceptible to gallstones, as are women who have had two or more children. Lack of exercise is a significant contributor to the development of gallstones. In fact, according to the Nurses' Health Study, inactivity can actually account for more than half of the risk of developing gallstones. Women are twice as likely as men to develop gallstones, although the reasons are unclear. And people older than 60 years of age have a greater risk of gallstones.

Other risk factors include a family history of gallstones and taking hormones, such as birth control pills or estrogen. ((http://health.howstuffworks.com/))

Gallstones become a problem when they get pushed out of the gallbladder and into the tube that connects the liver and the small intestine. The tube gets blocked, and you get 20 minutes to 4 hours of indescribable agony. Pain usually radiates from your upper right abdominal area to your lower right chest, and it can even leave your shoulder and back in agony. Gallstones typically fall back into the gallbladder or make their way through the duct, leaving you feeling better. After you have an attack, you'll probably be sore and wonder what in the world happened.

Sometimes, though, the gallstones can get stuck in the bile duct. Symptoms of a stuck gallstone include chills, vomiting, and possibly jaundice in addition to the pain described above. (http://health.howstuffworks.com/)

in layman's terms...

The gallbladder is a little pear-shaped pouch tucked behind the lobes of the liver. Its main job is to store up the cholesterol-rich bile that's secreted by the liver. Bile helps your body digest fatty foods. So when that piece of prime rib reaches the intestines, they send a message up to the gallbladder to send some bile their way. Once the bile saturates your steak, it becomes more digestible and easily makes its way through the rest of the digestive process.

At least that's the way things should work. But the reality is that many people, especially older people and women, will have some gallbladder trouble. Ninety percent of the time that trouble is in the form of gallstones. Gallstones form when the bile contains excessive amounts of cholesterol. When there isn't enough bile to saturate the cholesterol, the cholesterol begins to crystallize, and you get a gallstone. These tough bits can be as tiny as a grain of sand or as large as a golf ball. You may not even know you have gallstones unless you happen to have an ultrasound or X ray of your tummy. But the 20 percent of the time that gallstones do cause problems, it's excruciatingly painful.

What Next for Costa Rica Following Fairy-Tale World Cup Run?

This is just the beginning of a bright future for Costa Rica. Jorge Luis Pinto will be forever remembered as the man who took them to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history.

Los Ticos fought hard and fell versus Netherlands in the penalty kicks, but they showed the world that they are ready to shine in world football.

Van Gaal's Krull Gamble

Michael Steele/Getty Images

It may have seemed like a massive gamble to replace his starting goalkeeper specifically for the penalty shoot-out, but Van Gaal's decision turned out to be the right one, as Tim Krul saved spot kicks from Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana to see his side over the line.

Not many managers would have had the courage to pull off their side's starting keeper in the 120th minute, but that is one of the reasons why Van Gaal is considered one of the best in the business.

Argentina Are Not Pretty, but They're Certainly Effective

By Guillem Balague, Guest Columnist

BRASILIA, Brazil â€" During the last few weeks, most of the big motivational talk from Alejandro Sabella has been about the solidity of the squad. The strength of the group, the necessity of everybody working for each other, that nobody should doubtâ€"even if they had not been impressive.

Argentina had been lacking spark, and chances were at a premium, so Sabella has been asking his team to compensate by working hard to recover the ball, to kill any spaces, to help those that make mistakes. It hasn't been pretty, but the criticism coming from home is wrongâ€"Argentina are not playing badly. The talk of them not having style is wrong. They do, it is just that nobody likes it.

Argentina top Belgium, make semis

Argentina vs. Belgium: World Cup Quarter-Final Score, Grades and Reaction

By Alex Livie, UK Staff Writer
Jul 5, 2014

Argentina booked their passage to the semi-finals of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Belgium in Brasilia on Saturday.

It wasn’t a sizzling, free-flowing advert for attacking football, but it was a thoroughly professional performance built on Gonzalo Higuain’s early goal.

Belgium had ample chance to get back into the game, but they lacked the zip in the final third despite having the attacking qualities of Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne on the field.

Illustration from WASHINGTON TIMES, June 28, 1907
reprinting the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER

Wherever they can stick a name so that it shall glorify anything pertaining to England, there they stick it. You never hear of an Englishman speak of the Hawaiian Islands--no, he calls them the Sandwich Islands; Cook discovered them second-hand, by following a Spanish chart three hundred years old, which is still in the British Museum, and named them for some one-horse Earl of Sandwich, that nobody had heard of before, and hasn't since--a man that probably never achieved any work that was really gorgeous during his earthly mission, excepting his invention for confining a slice of ham between two slices of bread in such a manner as to enable even the least gifted of our race to eat bread and meat at the same time, without being bewildered by too elaborate a conjunction of ideas. I suppose, if the real truth were known, some foreigner invented the Sandwich, but England gave it a name, in her usual cheerful fashion. They never even speak of the whale that swallowed Jonah merely as a whale, but as the Prince of Wales. They think it suggests that he was an English whale. If he was that, that is sufficient. That covers up any probable flaws in his character. It is nothing to them that he went about gobbling up the prophets wherever he found them; it is nothing that he interfered with their business--nothing that he put them to infinite delay, discomfort and annoyance; it is nothing that he disgorged prophets in such a condition, as to personal appearance, that they might well feel a delicacy about preaching in a strange city. No--being an English whale was sufficient to make this infamous conduct excusable; and being English, they are willing to let the "great fish" pass for a whale, notwithstanding a whale's throat is not large enough to let a man do down. - Letter to San Francisco Alta California, February 11, 1868

Persistent Dog Wins Boy Over

A video of a Labrador Retriever trying to win over a little boy with Down syndrome has won hearts all over the Internet. The 4-minute clip was posted on YouTube more than a year ago by the boy’s mother, but only recently caught on. Ana Marta Vegas says her son, Hernan, usually avoids physical contact, reports Today. But the dog, Himalaya, was determined to get him to play with her. The gentle Lab nuzzles and licks Hernan before sitting up to place a paw on his shoulder. Finally, the boy leans over to put his arms around Himalaya at about the 3:15 point in the video. Their adorable interaction has been viewed more than 2 million times. (as of october 2013)

reminds me of a scene some years ago in the school where our kid goes...

mobile phones were never allowed right from the beginning, even long before every tom, dick and harry held such phones.  those who do bring are supposed to surrender these at the information booth in the main lobby, where the students can get them back after classes in the afternoon as they leave the campus.  but student creativity knows no bounds.

some teachers noticed something was wrong with the way one student walked.  she was made to undergo a body search because, well, what if she was ill or something?  blazes.  it turned out that she smuggled a mobile phone inside the campus by placing it in her underwear, and it started to slip.  that student was the year's biggest story in the school.

After they left Malacañan Palace, Imelda was found to have left behind 15 mink coats, 508 gowns, 1,000 handbags, and 1,060 pairs of shoes. The exact number of shoes varies with estimates of up to 7500 pairs of shoes. However, Time reported that the final tally was only 1,060. The location where her shoes and jewelry were being kept was later destroyed and the contents stolen. Even a painting of Imelda was destroyed outside the Palace. (wikipedia)

*Game sees 56 efforts on goal

Belgium's golden generation earned the chance to live up to their billing as they reached a first World Cup quarter-final for 28 years with an extra-time win over the USA in Salvador.

This was another brilliant and breathless occasion. Belgium walk away deserving winners but only after a performance of incredible spirit and bravery from the US.

As it was, Kevin de Bruyne scored the goal that finally broke USA resistance in the second minute of extra time at Arena Fonte Nova. Substitute Romelu Lukaku fired in a second 11 minutes later to apparently end the contest.

Angel Di Maria's extra-time winner carried Argentina into the World Cup quarter-finals after an unconvincing display against Switzerland.

The two-time champions dominated possession in a turgid last-16 tie, but were unable to break through until Di Maria swept in Lionel Messi's pass.

Switzerland defender Blerim Dzemaili headed against the Argentina post then prodded wide after Di Maria's winner.

Argentina will face Belgium, who beat the USA, in the last eight on Saturday.

It was a remarkable conclusion to a match that saw Argentina, rated among the favourites to win the World Cup, produce another distinctly average performance in neighbouring Brazil.

World Cup 2014: Germany & Algeria deliver 'beautiful story'

By David Ornstein BBC Sport in Porto Alegre

The Germany players pile on Mesut Ozil after the midfielder sealed victory with a late second goal

In a World Cup that rarely seems to deliver a bad game, we probably should have known that Germany's 2-1 extra-time victory over Algeria would be another belter.

The pre-match atmosphere inside Estadio Beira-Rio suggested otherwise: a cold, wet, gloomy day in keeping with the low-key mood as kick-off neared in a tie Germany were expected to win.

There was little singing, dancing, colour or culture - at least not to the levels witnessed prior to most other fixtures in a tournament where the on and off-field flair has reflected that of Brazil itself.

Defeat was too much for Algeria defender Aissa Mandi, who gave away possession in the build-up to Germany's opener, to take at the final whistle

These Are The Saddest World Cup Fans On Earth

The Huffington Post
By Janie Campbell
06/25/2014

Listen, world: we feel you. We remember the terrible, growing hole of sadness that gnawed away more and more of our soul while the U.S. crashed out of the World Cup in 2006. It felt like it would take at least two days before emotional eating (cheese pizza, mostly) would help us feel whole again! So we've been there, and we know how much it hurts -- but we're also not above collecting these photos of you in various stages of emotional distress, from despair to public tears. Better luck next time.

The Philippines has taken a "rules-based approach" in dealing the escalating disputes. It has abandoned seemingly futile direct negotiations with China and resorted to filing an arbitration case before the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

China has rejected the third-party settlement as Manila invests on new military assets for a "minimum credible defense" amid the regional dustup.

He explained that China looks back at its years as a weaker nation and still remembers Japan's invasion in 1931. Now an Asian powerhouse, China is prepared to use its newfound strength to its advantage.

Still, rival claimants "cannot simply make concessions to a country as it grows in power," Blair believes.

"We have to figure out how to counter those actions," he said.

Blair, who was in the US Navy for 34 years, urged the Philippines and other claimant states to say, "Wait a minute! These are things that matter to us. These are our interests. Together we are stronger than you are."

"These are not things that we hand over to you just because your [gross domestic product] goes up 10 percent a year," Blair said.

The former admiral admitted that Beijing's increasing might has "worried" him for years knowing that it feels entitled to weaker countries' concessions in the decades-long sea row.

"On the Chinese side, I think there is a similar sort of a ceiling because China knows that if a major conflict were to occur in the East China Sea or the South China Sea, the effect on China’s economic development would be terrible," Blair said.

"Below that limit, though, the Chinese are sitting around, thinking, “Now, what can I do next? Let's see, I can extend the ADIZ (Air Defense Identification Zone), I can declare a new fishing zone, etcetera," he added.

Neighboring countries should then take advantage of China's self-imposed limit even as it grows in power and believes it can get its way, Blair said.

"Of course, you need to think them through carefully, but if the Chinese want to play a game of 'I'll poke you here, and I'll poke you there,' then you have to respond and say, 'Game on." Blair said in an interview with Asahi Shimbun, a transcript of which was posted Thursday.

"Japan, the Philippines and Vietnam need to take initiatives of their own and be equally forceful in that space," the acknowledged Asia expert advised.

Blair said China will keep on forcefully asserting its claims through unilateral declarations, but will not step beyond the "upper limit" of heightening tensions to become a major conflict.
