Pochoy,

Kon kuhaan nato og base ang imong estorya, kapoy gyud. Tuod makawala sa gana sa pagtrabaho. Apan kon ato sang balansihon pag-ayo, luoy pud imong kapuyo.

Nakuha nimo?

Dili kay makigbuwag ka dayon. Luoy man gani na sa pagpangananak, bug-at pa pagmabdos , sakit pa manganak unya biyaan lang? Kana maoy hunahunaa. Salamat.

Dear Papa Joe,

The massacre of 1989, the most recent tragedy of all, is also the most forgotten: One of the first victims of the massacre, Jiang Jielian, was a junior at my high school. While his mother, Ding Zilin, and other mothers of the victims, are still seeking justice for the death of their sons and daughters, Jiang’s name is known to few of my classmates…Well-educated and worldly, they nonetheless see censorship more as a nuisance of daily life, something to be begrudgingly endured, rather than an infringement on their freedom of speech.

Even as the Web expands and citizens demand freedom online, governments worldwide have ramped up efforts to censor the Internet to prevent political uproar. About 30 countries have tightened press freedom since 2009, according to a recent Freedom House report. And despite a global call for Internet freedom, more than a third of countries put strict restrictions on online speech, the democracy watchdog agency found.

Regardless of the government’s efforts, there are still a growing number of Chinese citizens who want to push for change. Seventy-five percent of China’s journalism students call for less censorship, according to an anonymous academic poll of 108 students in Shantou University’s journalism program. With so much fervor behind the idea of a free and open Internet, China’s attempt to hide Tiananmen’s history may eventually become futile.
#12012
The Chinese government reacted similarly in 2011 to the pro-democracy “Jasmine Revolution” online protests that called for citizens to silently walk the streets holding a jasmine flower. The government banned the users from searching the term “jasmine”, blocked the characters for “jasmine” in text messages, and blocked GMail access.

But this year’s blackout may be partly thwarted by Google’s new worldwide encryption program that crippled China’s censorship and surveillance efforts. Google previously showed an anti-censorship warning message that alerted Chinese users that the information they were searching for was blocked or would disrupt their Internet connection.

Still, Beijing’s tactic to whitewash the Internet of unsavory opinions and historical events has, in some ways, worked. Many of China’s millennials who grew up with the Internet typically know nothing of the military crackdown, and do little to circumvent censorship surrounding it. Helen Gao, a Beijing-based journalist, bemoaned the apathy of her well-informed peers:
#12013
Thousands of students who flooded Tiananmen Square to mourn the death of a pro-open government official were forcefully evicted on the morning of June 4th, leading to an increased stifling of dissent in what had been a reforming China. This year, China has become increasingly aggressive in censoring online media compared to previous anniversaries. All Chinese media are barred from mentioning of the protests and the hundreds, possibly thousands, killed by the military (the government has not confirmed the exact number of casualties).

There were signs earlier this year the government was loosening its grip on online searches related to the protests. Users could search for Hu Yaobang, the purged high-level official whose death sparked the Tiananmen protests, and social media, blogging and news sites openly commemorated his death. However, search terms such as “June 4″ and “Tiananmen Square” were still banned and the latest round of suppression has erased those gains. “This is by far the biggest attack on Google that’s ever taken place in China,” a co-founder of GreatFire.org told The New York Times. “Probably the only thing comparable is when the Chinese government first started blocking websites in the 1990s.”

The decision to censor the events of June 4th go beyond just mentioning the massacre, extending to when a potentially controversial event happens near Tiananmen Square. Officials concealed images and online articles in October after a jeep barreled into a crowd in Tiananmen Square, injuring dozens and killing five people. Chinese officials clamped down further in September when posting derogatory remarks on blogs and online forums was criminalized. Violators face up to three years in jail if negative posts attract at least 5,000 page views or are shared more than 500 times.

Why You Can’t Read This Story If You’re In China Today

Twenty-five years later, Chinese citizens can’t “google” the word “candle” because it would bring up images of Hong Kong’s annual vigil (above) commemorating those killed in the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre.

Just days ahead of the 25th Tiananmen Square anniversary Wednesday, Chinese authorities shut down several Google sites and services in their latest effort to scrub the Internet of the pro-democracy protests that turned fatal in on June 4, 1989.

Google’s search engine, GMail, Google Calendar and its language translation service were all blocked as early as last week, according to GreatFire.org, a censorship watchdog that first reported the matter. The block has spanned at least four days, compared to last year’s 12 hour black-out, and targets 64 search terms such as “tank” and “rebellion.” It may be China’s strongest attempt to erase the Tiananmen Massacre from public memory.

The ban reveals the lengths to which the country will go to quell discussion of the military crackdown that ended the unprecedented occupation of Tiananmen Square beginning in April 1989.

Putin went on to suggest Clinton was weak and make more disparaging comments about her gender.

"Still, we always met afterwards and had cordial conversations at various international events. I think even in this case we could reach an agreement," said Putin. "When people push boundaries too far, it’s not because they are strong but because they are weak. But maybe weakness is not the worst quality for a woman."

In comments she later walked back, Clinton in March compared Putin's claims he was intervening to protect Russian-speaking minorities in Crimea to Hitler's defense of his actions in the 1930s. Clinton's comments caused immediate controversy, as they went far beyond the measured statements of President Barack Obama and others in the administration.

Putin's interviewer, anchor  Jean-Pierre Elkabbach, followed up and asked him if he felt angry or if he wanted to "get back at" Clinton. Putin said only that her "extreme statements" made it clear she didn't have a valid argument.

Clinton's political opponents characterized her remarks as an attempt by the potential 2016 presidential candidate to overcompensate for a potential political liability, since she had been an architect of the Russia "reset" policy.

" I think that for anybody who's a political observer, after seeing Putin's aggression in Ukraine and seeing that tied to our policy toward Russia, which she was the face of, it rung like somebody who felt like they needed to flex their muscles about how tough they could be on Putin," Tim Miller, the executive director of America Rising PAC, told Business Insider at the time, adding,  "And invoking Hitler was a way of doing that that overcompensated for the actual policies she helped put in place in Russia, which in a number of ways gave them a lot of leeway."

Russian President Vladimir Putin takes part in a wreath-laying ceremony by the Kremlin wall on the eve of the Victory Day celebrations in central Moscow, May 8, 2014. Russia celebrates victory over Nazi Germany on May 9.

Russian President Vladimir Putin gave a blistering response to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's comparison of his actions in Ukraine to those of Adolf Hitler leading up to World War II in a television interview that aired Wednesday.

Putin accused Clinton of not being the most elegant speaker and made remarks implying women in general are not well-suited to politics.

"It’s better not to argue with women. But Ms Clinton has never been too graceful in her statements," Putin said in a French television interview Wednesday.

Thrushes, including robins, are among the most average-looking birds. They are also among the world’s most widely distributed and successful birds. These midsize songbirds are found on lawns and in parks worldwide, looking (and not listening, as is commonly believed) for worms with a cocked head. There is a species of thrush from Australia that feeds by using flatulence to flush out worms.

The bassian thrush actually directs a stream of flatulence toward the site of a worm find. The gas apparently disturbs the worm and provokes movement. The otherwise ordinary-looking thrush is then able to effectively locate the worm and grab it for a quick meal. Producing gas on repeated occasions while feeding is certainly one of the most bizarre known adaptations of physiology and bird behavior.

The idea that China might believe these things comes as a surprise to many outside China, including, one suspects, many in Washington. U.S. policy towards China, including the pivot itself, is based on contrary assumptions. The consensus is that Beijing is not really serious about challenging U.S. leadership in Asia because it is simply not willing to risk a confrontation with America which Beijing's leaders must know they would lose, and they do not care enough about expanding China's role in Asia to take that risk.

If that's true, then China's conduct is clearly foolish. But before assuming that the Chinese leaders are fools, we would be wise to wonder whether they really do believe what Washington assumes they believe. I'm pretty sure they do not.

Asia today therefore carries the seeds of a truly catastrophic episode of mutual misperception. Both Washington and China are steadily upping the stakes in their rivalry as China's provocations of US friends and allies become more flagrant and America's commitments to support them become more categorical.

Both believe they can do this with impunity because both believe the other will back down to avoid a clash. There is a disconcertingly high chance that they are both wrong.

Someone needs to change the nature of the game to avert the risk of disaster.
#12040
By using direct armed pressure in these disputes, China makes its neighbors more eager for U.S. military support, and at the same time makes America less willing to give it, because of the clear risk of a direct U.S.-China clash. In other words, by confronting America's friends with force, China confronts America with the choice between deserting its friends and fighting China. Beijing is betting that, faced with this choice, America will back off and leave its allies and friends unsupported. This will weaken America's alliances and partnerships, undermine U.S. power in Asia, and enhance China's power.

This view of China's motives explains its recent conduct.

Ever since President Obama announced the "pivot," China has tested U.S. willingness to support its allies over the Scarborough Shoals and Senkaku/Daioyu disputes. Until his Asian trip last month, Obama seemed inclined to step back from America's commitments, but his bold words in Tokyo and Manila suggest he has recovered his resolve to stand firm.

Now we can expect China to test this newly-recovered resolve by applying more pressure in the same places or elsewhere. And that is what Beijing is doing today in the waters off Vietnam. It is calling Obama's bluff. Expect more pressure against Manila and Tokyo soon.

Of course this carries risks for China. It does not want to fight America, so it must be confident in the judgment that America will back down and desert its friends rather than engage in conflict with China, even if backing down badly weakens the U.S. position in Asia. This confidence reflects two key judgments by China's leaders.

First, they believe that China's new anti-access/area denial capabilities can deny America a quick and easy victory in an maritime clash in the East Asian littoral waters. They have been reassured by America's own Air-Sea Battle doctrine that the U.S. knows it cannot prevail in these waters without launching a major campaign of strikes against Chinese territory. Such strikes would obviously risk a major escalation which might not stop below the nuclear threshold. So China's leaders think their U.S. counterparts understand that a war with China today is one that America could not be confident of either winning or limiting.

Second, Beijing believes the balance of resolve is on China's side. Washington clearly wants to preserve its role in Asia, but Beijing is even more determined to win power at the U.S.' expense. China's conduct suggests that the leadership in Beijing believes Washington understands this imbalance of resolve. That makes the Chinese confident that U.S. leaders will not assume that China would back down first in a crisis.

Many people find it hard to understand why China is acting the way it is in the East and South China Seas. What does Beijing hope to achieve by alienating its neighbors and undermining regional stability?

Let me suggest an answer: China is trying to build what President Xi Jinping calls "a new model of great power relations." To understand how this might be the aim of Beijing's actions, we have to recognize that under his "new model," Xi wants China to wield much more power and influence in Asia than it has for the past few centuries. These things are inherently zero-sum, so for China to have more power and influence, America must have less. This is what Xi and his colleagues are trying to achieve.

Their reasoning is simple enough. They know that America's position in Asia is built on its network of alliances and partnerships with many of China's neighbors. They believe that weakening these relationships is the easiest way to weaken U.S. regional power. And they know that, beneath the flowery diplomatic phrases, the bedrock of these alliances and partnerships is the confidence America's Asian friends have that America is able and willing to protect them from China's power.

So the easiest way for Beijing to weaken Washington's power in Asia is to undermine this confidence. And the easiest way to do that is for Beijing to press those friends and allies hard on issues in which America's own interests are not immediately engaged -- like a string of maritime disputes in which the U.S. has no direct stake.

The lesson reportedly comes from a general studies textbook titled Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, published in 2011.

China has recently stepped up efforts to assert itself in the region in order to be seen on an equal footing with the U.S., the Journal reported, citing sources.

"China is very significantly upping the ante here," Hugh White, a professor of strategic studies at the Australian National University said, according to the Journal, adding: "What we're seeing is a steady and sharp increase in the overtones of the strategic rivalry."

Last month, a state-run Chinese oil company, sent a drilling rig close to the Paracel Islands, which are controlled by China but are claimed by Vietnam as well. The move sparked violent protests in Vietnam and claimed the lives of at least 21 people, including Chinese citizens. Last week, a Chinese fishing vessel hit and sank a Vietnamese boat, worsening the stand-off between the two nations over the oil-rig issue.

"You could say, now [the Chinese are] behaving more like a great power, they're behaving with a sense of entitlement, a sense of exceptionalism the way the Americans have done, and the British before them, as if the rules don't apply to them," an analyst, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Journal.

“Secretary Hagel, in this kind of public space with many people, openly criticized China without reason,” Wang, who also used the forum to censure Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said, according to the New York Times, adding: “Secretary Hagel’s speech is full of encouragement, incitement for the Asia region’s instability giving rise to a disturbance.”

“Over all these years, China has never actively provoked an incident over matters of Chinese sovereignty, territory and maritime boundaries,” Wang said, according to the Times, adding: “It’s always been other parties concerned taking the initiative to provoke trouble, and then the Chinese government has had no choice but to respond.”

Speaking on Saturday at the Singapore summit, Hagel had said: "In recent months, China has undertaken destabilizing, unilateral actions asserting its claims in the South China Sea," adding: "All nations of the region, including China, have a choice: to unite and recommit to a stable regional order, or to walk away from that commitment and risk the peace and security that has benefited millions of people." He also warned that the U.S. would "not look the other way" if nations disobeyed international rules.

Major General Zhu Chenghu, who heads the National Defense University of the People’s Liberation Army, said in an interview, according to the Wall Street Journal: "The Americans are making very, very important strategic mistakes right now," adding: "If you take China as an enemy, China will absolutely become the enemy of the U.S."

Top Chinese military officials used harsh words to counter the U.S.'s criticism of Beijing’s recent moves in disputed regions of the South China Sea, and warned the U.S. of serious consequences if it continued to interfere in regional issues.

Speaking on Sunday at a three-day summit between senior military leaders in Singapore, known as the Shangri-La Dialogue, Lt. Gen. Wang Guanzhong, the deputy chief of general staff for the Chinese military, criticized U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s earlier statements, which described China's recent actions in the South China Sea as “destabilizing, unilateral actions” while other senior officials also criticized U.S. interference in the issue, and warned that “strategic mistakes” by U.S. leaders could lead to hostilities between the world's two largest economies.

"We all knew that he was a very emotional guy and when he didn't get his own way he would say 'Screw you, I'm going to go do my own thing,'" Bramblett said. "I've never seen him be violent, ever, but I would definitely say that maybe emotionally and mentally he was a little unstable."

Chamberlain had worked for years as a political consultant on Democratic campaigns, Bramblett said.

He also worked as an independent contractor for The San Francisco Chronicle during the 2012 NFL season, doing social media to boost coverage for the San Francisco 49ers Insider iPad app, the newspaper said.

A spokeswoman for the University of San Francisco said Chamberlain taught a "Grass Roots Mobilization" course to graduate students in the Public Affairs program in 2011. Anne-Marie Devine said Chamberlain taught for one semester, and wasn't invited to teach another course. She said she didn't know why because hundreds of adjunct professors come and go at the university.

The affidavit and search warrant used to enter Chamberlain's home remain under seal.

Chamberlain is traveling in a white 2008 Nissan Altima with Texas or California license plates, but authorities do not know where he is heading, Lee said.

His boss at a music rights consultancy group said he last contacted her Friday to remind her to deposit his paycheck at a new bank account. Brooke Wentz said the conversation was uneventful and that she was "tremendously dumbfounded" by the news that the contractor she hired to handle her company's social media accounts was wanted by the FBI.

"He's a nice guy," Wentz told The Associated Press.

Wentz said it didn't seem like Chamberlain was staying in the apartment on Jackson Street. She said when she mailed him his paycheck in April, he told her he would have to go the apartment to pick it up. She said he seemed under financial pressure because he told her that two friends who were leasing his apartment left without telling him and he had to scramble to pay for two rentals.

"I wondered what kind of friends would do something like that? I tried to ask him about the situation but he was kind of evading my question," Wentz said.

Randy Bramblett, a personal trainer and professional athlete in San Francisco, said he became friends with Chamberlain through Project Sport, a local sports marketing company. The company let Chamberlain go when it was sold in November and he soon lost touch with friends and stopped returning calls and messages, Bramblett said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) â€" The FBI has issued a nationwide alert to law enforcement agencies about a San Francisco social media consultant they consider armed and dangerous who is wanted on suspicion of possessing explosives.

FBI spokesman Peter Lee said Sunday that 42-year-old Ryan Kelly Chamberlain II was last seen in a dark blue, hooded sweatshirt and jeans.

Multiple agencies, including hazardous materials crews, searched Chamberlain's apartment in San Francisco's Russian Hill neighborhood on Saturday, blocking off the street to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for much of the day.

Lee gave no details Sunday about the nature of the investigation, but said authorities believe Chamberlain is acting alone.

"We believe he is alone in the vehicle but we just don't know, again, where his ties or his network is so we ask that any members of the public be on the lookout for anyone that matches this man's description," Lee said at a press conference outside FBI headquarters on Sunday.

The starter is a rotary switch on the tiny handlebar, and there appears to be a brake handle as well, and the three wheels are fixed in place. The farmer, according to local Chinese media, never finished primary school but spent 10 years building his self-propelled carry-on, which supposedly also sports some undetermined amount of cargo space and a nav system.

There are myriad reasons that riding a motorized suitcase is a terrible idea, beyond the sheer humiliation factor of riding a freakin’ motorized suitcase in public. For one thing, with no suspension and a rather ergonomically, um, flat seating situation, the motorized suitcase doesn’t look too comfortable, especially from what we remember about the quality of Chinese roads. Next, China’s chaotic roadways and sidewalksâ€"sometimes one and the sameâ€"are treacherous enough in an armored military transport, let alone a rolling suitcase. And safety is, well, not.

If this idea takes off â€" and apparently He Liang has patented the idea, just in case â€" look for this “world’s lightest car” to make him a rich man. Suitcase racing series? Open a string of drive-through suitcase washes? Other variants like motorized guitar cases? If it can happen anywhere, it can happen there.

From the “This is a real thing, we think” file comes the curious case of the Chinese farmer turned inventor of motorized suitcases.

He Liang, a farmer from China’s Hunan region, has invented and patented the ultimate rollaboard, or what he apparently calls the “multi-functional suitcase.” Photographed this week in Changsha, the motorized suitcase is said to weigh about 15-16 lbs. and is able to carry two people (or one well-fed American, maybe). With the help of a wheel hub electric motor in the single front wheel, the little three-wheeler can travel 50 to 60 kilometersâ€"or 31 to 37 milesâ€"on a full charge.

Maximum speed is 20 km per hour, which is somewhat faster than we would ever feel comfortable traveling on a three-wheeled box, and about as fast as a fleet-footed TSA agent could give chase in an airport concourse until he runs out of breath, or the rider runs into a stunned tourist who swears he just saw some loser coming toward him riding a suitcase.

“Una po takot na takot akong mamatay. Pero ngayon ineenjoy ko na lang ang bawat oras ng aking buhay (At first I was afraid of drying. Now I’m just enjoying every moment of my life),” Pondare said. “Yung mga problema ko, dinadaan ko lang sa tawa, kinakausap ko yung mga kapatid ko, o minsan kinakanta ko na lang (I try to forget my problems by laughing them off, talking with my siblings, or singing).”

Her favorite song is Sarah Geronimo’s “To Love You More.” Her ultimate crush is Alden Richards, who plays Marian Rivera’s love interest in the primetime soap Carmela. She looks back with no regrets to a short-lived affair with a man whose family had opposed their relationship. And she’s still looking for her ideal man.

“Gusto ko po ng lalaking magmamahal sa akin nang habambuhay at yung tatanggapin ako ng kung sino ako (I want a man who would love me forever and who will accept me for who I am),” Pondare said.

As she turns 17, Pondare has this piece of advice for those having hard time coping with adversity in life: “Never lose hope. Always pray and live your life to the fullest. Just enjoy each day knowing that you are given another day to be with your loved ones and be a blessing to other people.”
#12096
There are other kind souls. Pondare’s condition has reached the attention of Project Michaelangelo, spearheaded by Jojo Sayson, a NASA research scientist and physical therapist. The foundation covers Pondare’s medical examinations, treatments and other health needs.

While her earnings as vendor have helped send her siblings to school, Pondare, who loves cooking, dreams of opening her own canteen someday.

“Gusto ko pong magkaroon ng sarili kong business para po makatulong sa pamilya ko at matulungan ko ang aking nanay na maiahaon ang buhay namin sa kahirapan (I want to have my own business so I would be able to help my family and my mother uplift our family from poverty),” she said.

Although she is making it to her 17th birthday, Pondare knows only too well of her mortality. The death of her friend Maureen, who also had progeria, at age 15 is a constant reminder. But she has decided to make the most out of life.
#12097
Fed up with her husband, Pondare’s mother moved out of the house when Pondare was 8, taking all her children with her except for a son. Pondare would see her father and brother again six years later, when she turned 14 and felt her life might soon come to an end.

Pondare went to Tahanang Walang Hagdanan in Cainta, Rizal, a nonprofit training center for people with disabilities, for her early education. But she would return to this town years later to finish her primary studies at Kabilang Bacood Elementary School, a few blocks away from her first home near the public market.

She then enrolled at the Jaime J. Vistan High School, which was closer to her second residence in Plaridel, but got to finish only first year. Her mother was not making enough to cover the family expenses.

Except for one incident when she was bullied by a classmateâ€" “Mukha daw po akong tiyanak (I look like a demon child for him),” she saidâ€"the lone year in high school was a happy one for Pondare who had the support of the school principal and her classmates.

Like her mother, Pondare became a vendor, peddling clothes, crafts, and fruits on the streets and markets here. Her suki or regular customers include a foreigner who would buy mangoes from her and always let her keep the change, and even help out when her family’s finances were low.
#12098
Pondare has progeria, a rare genetic disorder that causes premature aging. She is one of the handful of known cases of progeria in the Philippines.

Those born with progeria,or Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, typically live up to their mid-teens to early twenties. According to the U.S.-based Progeria Research Foundation, only 80 cases of progeria are well-documented in the world.

Pondare’s mother, a garments vendor, noticed the changes in her eldest child when she was 5 and tried her best to help her deal with the condition.

But not her father, who Pondare said was jobless, often had a drink too many, and spent practically every single day beating his children and his wife.

“Palagi po niya akong binubugbog nung malaman niya na may sakit ako, saka sinasabi niya na malas ako sa pamilya (My father always beats me when he knew that I was sick with progeria and even told my family that I was a misfortune to them),”she said.

Rochelle Pondare

PLARIDEL, Bulacanâ€"She watches primetime soaps and gushes over pop artists. Her voice rises a pitch higher when she talks about her crushes and handsome men. She has fallen in love and has had her heart broken.

Sounds like a typical teenager. Except she’s not.

Anna Rochelle Orellianes Pondare, who turns 17 this Friday (May 30), in fact, has the look of a 60-year-old woman and the size of a 5-year-old girl. Her skin is wrinkled from face to feet. The muscles on her arms and thighs have shrunk. She has lost all her hair and can never grow it back.

The official line from the royal family was a resounding no comment.

The publication of the photograph raises fresh questions about the royal family's privacy.

In 2012, French magazine Closer provoked outrage among the royals and sections of the British press when it published paparazzi photos of a topless Kate on holiday at a French villa.

The royals took legal action and French authorities promptly banned Closer from any use or resale of the offending pictures, the most intimate of which showed the duchess topless and having suncream applied to her by William.

However, British tabloid The Sun did publish photographs of a naked Prince Harry cavorting in a Las Vegas hotel room in August 2012.
