                     Bridge Over Troubled Water

There are many things in life that we have to learn to accept, regardless of whether we like them or not. These include our flaws, regrets and mistakes. As the year draws to a close, I’d like to come to terms with the things I find difficult to accept so that I can let go of them before the New Year sets in. You should do the same â€" free yourself from the things that are keeping you stuck in the past. I’m sure that you can relate to the following affirmations:

12. Coffee served on the porch of an Antebellum mansion. A party was held for the cadets from the local army flying school in Mississippi, USA in 1943.

Two angels in heaven were arguing about the souls on earth. One, a pessimist, felt that all souls were selfish and unworthy of redemption. The other, an optimist felt that they were good and kind. After much arguing, the two made a bet. The angel who felt people were selfish bet that the optimist couldn't find three good, kind people in three days.


Disguising himself as a beggar, the optimist came down to earth wandering from town to town. He came to a small village where he heard of three brothers whose parents had died and left the boys a farm outside of town, which had a pear tree. The fruit from this tree fed them and also brought a good price in the market. The angel, arrived at their home and asked the eldest brother if he could spare some fruit for a hungry man.


The next morning, the angel appeared at their house, this time as a wealthy merchant. The brothers were amazed at the man standing at their door. The stranger asked them to take a walk through the countryside with him. He promised the boys that their fields and pear tree would be well cared for while they were away.

While on their walk, the angel asked the eldest brother to make his best wish. The young man pointed to the sun-filled meadow and he wished it were a vineyard and that he had a winery and many servants who called him master.
The angel tapped his staff and vines with grapes filled the valley. As the young man walked toward his new life, the angel called out "Remember God's poor people."

He then took the two remaining brothers to an open pasture filled with blackbirds. He asked the middle brother to make a wish. The boy wished that the birds were sheep. He wished he had a mill in the valley and was a wealthy wool merchant with many servants. Upon tapping his staff, the middle brother received all that he wished for. As the middle brother walked toward his new life, the angel called out "Remember God's poor."



The angel then took the last brother to the top of a mountain, filled with valleys, oceans and forests. He asked the young boy to make his best wish. The young man looked around and then turned to the angel, humbly asking him for someone to love me for who I am.

The angel, stunned, told the boy that this is a rare wish. The angel had to refer to his book to see what he could do, to which he then answered: "There are only three women in the world who could love you for who you are. Two are married. We'd better hurry to the third."

The pair then arrived at the court of a king whose daughter was set to be wed shortly. "Your majesty, I have brought a suitor for your daughter," the angel said.

The king, stunned, replied: "Another? I have a king, two princes and a sultan in the next room. How can I pick the right man?"

"Your majesty, I have a solution. In your garden you have five olive trees. Cut a branch from each one and plant them in a row. On each branch, tie the name of one suitor. Tomorrow, the branch that bears fruit will also bear the name you seek."



The king was happy with this idea. Upon inspecting the branches the next morning, he saw that 4 of the 5 branches were dried and withered, but the branch with the young farmer's name was alive and bore fruit. The farmer was rejoiced and the princess and he were married soon after. The angel took them away to a small cottage at the edge of the woods and told them both: "Remember God's poor."

One year later the angel decided to see how the three brothers were doing. Disguising himself as a beggar the angel visited the oldest brother's vineyards. He knocked on the door and said: "Please sir, a taste of wine for a thirsty man."

"Away with you, " the brother shouted "or I'll set my dogs on you if you don't leave at once."

The angel tapped his staff and all of the man's vineyards disappeared. "Go back to your pear tree," the angel said. "You forgot God's poor!"

Next the angel knocked at the wool merchant's mill. "Please sir, a scrap of cloth to warm my cold shoulders."

"Away with you!" shouted the brother. "I'll set my dogs on you if you don't leave at once."

The angel tapped his staff and all of the man's mill disappeared. "Go back to your pear tree. You forgot God's poor."

Finally, the angel walked up the path to the little cottage at the edge of the woods and knocked on the door. "Please sir, do you have some bread for a hungry man?"





The young man replied: "We don't have much, but what we have is yours."

The young couple offered bread and soup to the old man. They then proceeded to offer him some water, apologizing that they had nothing better to offer him. But as they poured a glass for the angel, sweet wine flowed.

The angel took the young couple by the hand and led them to the top of a hill overlooking rows of pear trees and a beautiful house.
"This is for you and your children," the angel said, "Because you remembered God's poor."

Lonzo Ball's triple-double sends Lakers past Denver, 127-109

LOS ANGELES (AP) Lonzo Ball's haircuts are headline news around LA and the NBA. His father already draws more attention than most politicians, and LaVar Ball is even currently engaged in a public argument with the president.

Through all of this extraordinary attention on a 20-year-old point guard and his family, Lonzo has managed to remain focused on his rookie season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

He broke through the distractions with another beautiful game against Denver.

Ball had his second career triple-double and Julius Randle scored 24 points in the Lakers' 127-109 victory over the short-handed Nuggets on Sunday night.

With 11 points, a career-high 16 rebounds and 11 assists, Ball reached the milestone at 20 years and 23 days - the exact age at which LeBron James became the youngest player to record his second triple-double in 2005.

Ball became the youngest player in NBA history with a first triple-double eight days earlier in a loss at Milwaukee.

''This one was a lot better,'' Ball said. ''I actually like this one. Just keep building on it.''

Ball and Magic Johnson are the only Lakers with multiple triple-doubles in their rookie seasons. Johnson had seven, and his new point guard has two in his first 17 games.

''You should always play better in front of your fans, so I'm just trying to put on a good show for them and win at the same time,'' Ball said.

Ball had another big game at another turbulent moment in his family life. With his father beefing with Donald Trump over the president's role in resolving brother LiAngelo's legal issues during a UCLA basketball trip to China, Lonzo Ball put together an outstanding floor game to boost the Lakers to just their second win in seven games.

''Never with a young man like this, his age, have I seen it,'' Lakers coach Luke Walton said of the circus surrounding Ball's every move.

''I mean, he got a haircut and fielded three questions on game day about his haircut. One, it's impressive how he is able to maintain and handle it, and two, I think it's a little bit nuts. But that's the way it's going to be.''

Brook Lopez scored 21 points and Jordan Clarkson added 18 for the Lakers, who surged to a 24-point lead in the first half and won easily.

Denver coach Mike Malone and top scorer Nikola Jokic were ejected in the second quarter after Malone stepped onto the court during play to argue a no-call on a play by Jokic around the basket. Malone furiously confronted referee Rodney Mott, who swiftly ejected the coach and his best player when Jokic joined in the argument.

''I'll be honest, I deserved to get tossed, but Nikola Jokic did nothing to warrant an ejection,'' Malone said. ''That's something that we'll try to look into if we can.''

Clarkson scores 25, Lakers beat Suns 100-93

PHOENIX (AP) Jordan Clarkson scored a season-high 25 points and the Los Angeles Lakers pulled away late to beat the Phoenix Suns 100-93 on Monday night.

Devin Booker had 36 points, his second consecutive game of at least 35, for the Suns.

Brook Lopez and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 15 apiece for the Lakers, who snapped a three-game losing streak and won in Phoenix for the second time this season.

Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball, coming off his first career triple-double on Saturday night, did not play in the fourth quarter, when the Lakers pulled out the victory. He had seven points on 3-of-10 shooting, five rebounds, five assists and four turnovers in 28 minutes.

Booker scored 22 in the first half en route to his sixth 30-point performance in the last 10 games. T.J. Warren added 21 and Dragan Bender a career-high 15 for the Suns.

The score was tied 81-81 after Bender's left-handed driving layup with 7:25 to play.

Los Angeles took control from there with a 10-2 run to go up 91-83 on Corey Brewer's 3-pointer with 5:02 remaining. Phoenix, loser of six of its last seven, never got closer than six after that and Clarkson's 3 made it 98-88 with 2:43 to go.

Phoenix scored the first nine points of the game and that was the biggest lead for either team through three quarters.

Neither team was up by more than five in the third. The Lakers scored the final six of the quarter, the last two on Clarkson's reverse layup with 3.6 seconds to go to lead 74-73 entering the fourth.

Dangerous Hurricane Irma will approach the southern Florida Peninsula Saturday as a powerful Category 4 storm. Irma will move west-northwest through the southern Bahamas and the eastern Florida Straits late today before making a forecast turn to the north- northwest by Saturday evening. “An Act of God”: San Antonio Theatre Mocks God

Dear Mr. Econg,

     I regret to inform you that the devil is again showing his ugly head…

     According to press reports, the play An Act of God is a rewrite of the Ten Commandments. The renowned actor John Stillwaggon impersonates God. The play has shown before on Broadway and our protest petition helped to stifle attendance to it.

     However, the devil never gives up in his raging blasphemies against his Creator.

     We ask you to join us again as this blasphemous play is scheduled to show at the Sheldon Vexler Theatre in San Antonio.

     It is a blasphemous mockery from beginning to end. An outrage!

     But of course theatre critics bray in approval at such bold blaspheming.

     I tell you, the World is really pushing it.

     And did you know that according to serious statistics, the amount of natural disasters around the world have increased dramatically in the past 30 years?

     And what about the chaos sinful mankind is racing towards?

     It is really scary.

     But when you read what they are doing in this play, An Act of God, you begin to understand what is going on…

And God has low self-esteem and certainly doesn’t think He’s perfect. Abraham’s test of his love of God by obediently beginning to sacrifice his son in prefigure to God offering His Son in sacrifice is commented on by “God”: “It was only then that I first began to consider the possibility that there was something seriously wrong with me.” 

And God is indifferent: “Gay, straight, bisexual, transgender; thou art all equally smite-able in my eyes.”

And it seems “God” had the angel Gabriel give us the Muslim Koran. God notes that the angel “doesn’t just do the Bible,” but also “dictated the words of the Quran to Muhammed. (Don’t think that playwrights finally gave equal offense to Islam. “God” continues: “That, of course, was the beginning of Islam, and at the request of the producers, that is the last you’ll be hearing about Islam tonight.”)
     We cannot print most of the samples of mockery and blasphemy.

     I don’t know about you, but this reminds me of those people who were mocking God before the great flood, in the time of Noah. 

     This is biblical!

     But what is most important is that we don’t allow ourselves to get used to blasphemy.

     And that we continue to offer our own reparation for these blasphemies. In our hearts.

     Please defend the honor of the One, True God.

Irma, now packing 130 mph (215 kph) winds, also threatens Florida and the U.S. East Coast, said the NHC, which cautioned that it was still too early to forecast the storm's exact path or what effects it might have on the continental United States.

"There is an increasing chance of seeing some impacts from Irma in the Florida Peninsula and the Florida Keys later this week and this weekend. In addition, rough surf and dangerous marine conditions will begin to affect the southeastern U.S. coast by later this week," the center said.

Irma will be the second powerful hurricane to thrash the United States and its territories in as many weeks.

Love-hate relationships
Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are a classic example of “frenemies”. At times they were friends, and at other times they were fierce rivals that said some pretty nasty things.

One of the most memorable moments? In 1997, Microsoft invested money in Apple to keep the struggling company afloat. Gates appeared on the screen during Jobs’ keynote talk at the MacWorld conference, and the audience booed.

The Microsoft antitrust case
Initiated in 1998, Microsoft was accused of becoming a monopoly and engaging in anti-competitive practices by the U.S. government and 20 states.

The ruling from 2000 called for a split of Microsoft, creating two separate companies. One half would house the Windows operating system, and the second half would produce other software. However, Microsoft appealed â€" and in the end, it didn’t really matter, as other companies like Apple started to eat away at Windows’ market share anyways.

Becomes richest man
At age 31, Gates took the title of the world’s youngest billionaire â€" and at 39, he became the world’s richest person with a fortune of $12.9 billion.

Today, of course, that fortune sits closer to $84.9 billion.

Launches “The Giving Pledge”
In 2010, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett announced “The Giving Pledge”, a campaign to get billionaires to contribute the majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes. Today, there are 158 signers to the pledge, with pledges totaling $365 billion.

James Harden Donates $1 Million to Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts in Houston

Houston Rockets guard James Harden announced Saturday he plans to donate $1 million to Hurricane Harvey relief.

"This is home for me," Harden told reporters, according to KPRC-TV's Adam Wexler. "I wanted to say thank you to J.J. Watt, what he's doing for the city. Thank you to the mayor, for helping me. I just want to donate and give back to the community as much as I can, so I'm going to donate $1 million to the city and to areas that need it and to people that need it to make the city stronger."



As Harden mentioned, he's one of several high-profile Houston athletes who has made a significant financial commitment to Harvey relief.


Watt, of course, is the most noteworthy.

After initially pledging $100,000, Watt's fundraiser gained tremendous steam. As of Saturday afternoon, the Houston Texans defensive end has raised nearly $17 million from more than 160,000 different donors.

Rockets owner Les Alexander has also made substantial contributions to relief funds.

On Tuesday, Alexander increased his donation to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, started by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, from $4 million to $10 million.

Hurricane Irma Packing 110 MPH Winds and Headed West Over Atlantic

While Texas is still struggling to recover from Harvey, more trouble was brewing Saturday out in the Atlantic â€" and its name is Irma.

Packing 110-mile-per-hour winds and expected to remain a hurricane in the coming days, Irma was about 1,220 miles from the Leeward Islands in the West Indies as of 11 a.m. ET, and marching west at a steady 15 mph clip, according to the latest National Hurricane Center bulletin.


The NHC said earlier that "Irma is expected to be a major hurricane when it moves closer to the Lesser Antilles early next week." An updated advisory Saturday morning referred to it as a "smaller hurricane" and that "some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours."

So does it pose any danger to the Harvey-battered U.S.?

"We don't know yet," Dennis Feltgen, a NHC spokesman and meteorologist, told NBC News. "It's just too far away."

Still, it's moving closer. When Irma was declared a dangerous Category 3 hurricane at 5 p.m. Thursday, it was about 3,000 miles southeast of Miami. It was downgraded slightly to a Category 2 on Saturday, but is expected to continue alternating in intensity.

"Fluctuations in strength, up or down, are possible during the next few days, but Irma is expected to remain a powerful hurricane through the weekend," an NHC bulletin states.

The "rapid intensification" of Irma's strength got everybody's attention at their headquarters in Miami, Feltgen said Thursday.

The last major storm named Irma appeared in the Atlantic on Oct. 2, 1978, and never made it to the U.S. coast.

Tropical Storm Irma came within 500 miles of the Azores before petering out on Oct. 5, according to the National Weather Service.
