Bible Study / Prayer for the Indwelling of the Spirit
November 19, 2013, 11:02:44 PM
Holy Spirit, powerful Consoler, sacred Bond of the Father and the Son, Hope of the afflicted, descend into my heart and establish in it your loving dominion. Enkindle in my tepid soul the fire of your Love so that I may be wholly subject to you. We believe that when you dwell in us, you also prepare a dwelling for the Father and the Son. Deign, therefore, to come to me, Consoler of abandoned souls, and Protector of the needy. Help the afflicted, strengthen the weak, and support the wavering. Come and purify me. Let no evil desire take possession of me. You love the humble and resist the proud. Come to me, glory of the living, and hope of the dying. Lead me by your grace that I may always be pleasing to you. Amen.

This prayer was written by St. Augustine of Hippo, Doctor of the Church.
#1202
O God of my soul, I hope in Thy goodness that Thou hast pardoned all my offenses against Thee, and that I am now in a state of grace. I thank Thee for it with all my heart, and I hope to thank Thee for all eternity. I know that I have fallen, because I have not had recourse to Thee when I was tempted, to ask for holy perseverance. For the future, I firmly resolve to recommend myself always to Thee, and especially when I see myself in danger of again offending Thee. I will always fly to Thy mercy, invoking always the most holy names of Jesus and Mary, with full confidence that when I pray Thou wilt not fail to give me the strength which I have not of myself to resist my enemies. This I resolve and promise to do. But of what use, O my God, will all these resolutions and promises be, if Thou dost not assist me with Thy grace to put them in practice; that is, to have recourse to Thee in all dangers? Ah, Eternal Father! Help me, for the love of Jesus Christ; and let me never omit recommending myself to Thee whenever I am tempted. I know that Thou dost always help me when I have recourse to Thee; but my fear is, that I should forget to recommend myself to Thee, and so my negligence will be the cause of my ruin, that is, the loss of Thy grace, the greatest evil that can happen to me. Ah, by the merits of Jesus Christ, give me grace to pray to Thee; but grant me such an abundant grace that I may always pray, and pray as I ought!
O my Mother Mary, whenever I have had recourse to thee, thou hast obtained for me the help which has kept me from falling! Now I come to beg of thee to obtain a still greater grace, namely, that of recommending myself always to thy Son and to thee in all my necessities. My Queen, thou obtainest all thou dost desire from God by the love thou bearest to Jesus Christ; obtain for me now this grace which I beg of thee, namely,

(State your intention here...)

to pray always, and never to cease praying till I die.
Amen.

Bible Study / A prayer for all humanity
November 19, 2013, 10:57:28 PM
Bless us all, 0 Lord, we pray, for loved ones, here and near, and far away. And everyone for whom we pray. Keep us safe each night and day, the homeless who have no place to stay. Those who are suffering in any way. The dying, those mourning or grieving and all who need God's mercy. Keep us safe, Heavenly Father, when we are at home, or traveling on our way, or when we are vulnerable, or in danger in any way. Most merciful Father, hear us as we pray for the souls in Purgatory, or who may be sent there some day.

Japanese soldier's son

Meanwhile, in Japan, a son of a Japanese soldier who died in the Philippines during World War II gave Y200,000 (over P87,000) for Yolanda victims, the Philippine Embassy in Japan said.

"My father lies sleeping in a mountain somewhere in Luzon," said Kenji Hirakawa, who said he was just three months old when his father left to serve in the Japanese Imperial Army.

“I am enclosing here JPY200,000 for all the troubles my father may have caused to the Filipino people,” he said, adding he hopes the money will help alleviate the plight of the typhoon victims.

However, the embassy said Hirakawa did not write down a contact number.

"In the end his generous gesture and its impetus only prove that, after all that has been said and done, history will always bind the Philippines and Japan together," the embassy said. â€" LBG, GMA News

Amen. God Bless you, Mr. Hirakawa....

Moving stories from overseas

A photo of a 6-year-old Japanese boy, Shoichi Kondoh, who emptied his piggybank for typhoon victims in the Philippines went viral on Friday.

Photo from the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo shows Second Secretary and Consul Bryan Dexter Lao receiving the envelope from pre-schooler Shoichi Kondoh.

"Accompanied by his mother, Miho Kondoh, Shoichi visited the Philippine Embassy today to personally hand-over his donation of JPY 5,000 taken from his piggybank savings," the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo reported.

God Bless you, little Shoichi! May Blessings be poured out onto you!

On the outskirts of town, bodies that hadn't been claimed by relatives who had to examine corpse after corpse at the morgue near the city hall were being lumped into mass graves.

There was no sign of religious rites at the proceedings. But Mayor Alfred Romualdez said a priest would conduct a ceremony at the mass graves, once the national authorities had given their approval.

Such grim scenes remain harrowingly abundant in and around Tacloban. But Father Petilos urged people not to focus only on the misery.

"Even if we have this kind of situation, there is still hope," he said, noting that some families in the city had begun the long, slow process of rebuilding their lives.

"Yes, we may have been damaged," he said. "Devastated. But we're not dead."

The churches are doing their best to help the living, but the dead are not being afforded a great deal of dignity - despite the pastors' initial efforts.

Corpses have lined the streets here for days, festering in plain view. Many of them are now encased in body bags, and workers are gradually collecting them and moving them to an outdoor morgue.

In front of the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help on Friday, a row of body bags was being hauled onto the back of a truck. Last in line was a rudimentary coffin with a wooden cross leaning against it.

Determining that the coffin wouldn't fit on the truck, the workers picked up the wooden cross and used it to smash open the lid. They pulled out the decaying bodies of a young woman and an older man, loosely wrapped in plastic, and deposited them on the road.

In front of a growing crowd, many of whom covered their noses with their hands or shirts, the workers placed the corpses in body bags and added them to the pile on the truck.
#1227
Inside the church, children played in the aisle and pieces of meat were cooking in a pan on a small fire.

Sitting shirtless on one pew with a cigarette in his mouth, Eddie Cinco disagreed with the pastor's view of the cause of the storm.

"It was an act of God," he said, a silver crucifix hanging from his neck and a wound gradually healing on his right arm. "Only God is strong enough to do this."

Rubbing one of his bare feet, he said that God had perhaps decided to punish Tacloban, but he couldn't think why.

Cinco said that he was thankful that he and his six family members staying in the church had been spared, even if their home had been flattened.

In his prayers, he said, he asks for no more calamities.
#1228
In the Philippines, more than 80% of the population describes itself as Roman Catholic, and only a tiny fraction of those surveyed in the national census say they have no religion at all.

Many of Tacloban residents feel close to the nation's Catholic history. In 1521 Magellan landed on Cebu Island, which is situated not far from where Tacloban now stands. Though he was eventually killed in a fight on a nearby island, his arrival marked the beginning of the conversion of largest parts of the archipelago to Catholicism.

The missionary spirit is alive and well in Father Bacaltos' chuch. It has provided food and shelter to more than 300 families since the storm, he said.
#1229
Sitting a few rows farther forward, Arsenia Orioque, 74, had come to the church to pray and to take advantage of the medical services being offered there each afternoon.

Since the storm washed out her home and mini-grocery store, she has developed a bad cough, she said. All her clothes were ruined, leaving her to wear a red t-shirt that a neighbor took for her from a nearby shopping mall during the looting in the typhoon's aftermath.

She seldom came to church before the storm struck, but now she says she can find peace there.

"In my prayers, I give thanks that I survived the typhoon," she said.
#1230
"Only God knows," he said. "Only these people know. We are all victims. There are whole families lost."

He and his colleagues have encouraged people to write the names of those killed in the storm on a board, so that they can be included in the congregation's prayers.

Norcio said she has made use of another board at the back of the church where people can put details about missing loved ones in the hope that others who might know of their whereabouts can alert them.
#1231
Her home has been destroyed, she said, and three members of her family are still missing. She's received no food from authorities, relying on the charity of her neighbors instead.

Attending Mass at Santo Nino has been "a big help" during this time, she said, sitting solemnly next to a motherly neighbor and the neighbor's young son.

The storm ripped off most of the roof of the church. A large pool of dirty water sits in the center of the floor. And the adoration chapel is filled with brown sludge and broken chairs.

But the altar is still largely intact. Masses resumed the day after the typhoon and are now being held two or three times a day, said Father Isagani Petilos, one of the two senior pastors at the church.

Father Petilos, who also blessed the bodies in the area surrounding his church soon after the storm, said he didn't know if religion was helping the survivors endure the aftermath.
#1232
As the people who remain in this broken city attempt to come to terms with the catastrophe that engulfed them a week ago, religion is offering a degree of solace for some of those who have suffered incalculable losses.

It's also providing basic elements of community and support to residents of an area where local government ceased to fully function for several days and is still only slowly sputtering back into action.

In Santo Nino Church -- situated a few blocks north of Father Bacaltos' compound -- Joan Norcio, 26, sat on one of the wooden pews near the back, waiting for Mass to begin.
#1233
His day of work took a heavy mental toll.

"It was difficult for me," he said. "It was a really emotional experience."

The next day, he said, "When I celebrated the Eucharist, I broke down because of all the suffering I had seen."

Hundreds of survivors were taking refuge in the church compound, much of which withstood Super Typhoon Haiyan's ferocious winds and destructive storm surge.

Many of them asked the pastor how God could let such a calamity befall this predominantly Catholic city.

His response, he said, was to tell them that "God is not the cause of the suffering. God cannot prevent this. This is the work of nature."

But why it had to happen to Tacloban and its more than 200,000 residents, Father Bacaltos acknowledged, is "difficult to explain."
#1234
Tacloban City, The Philippines (CNN) -- The day after the typhoon, Father Edwin Bacaltos stepped out of the compound of the Church of Our Mother of Perpetual Help in central Tacloban and began his work.

The scene was one of unspeakable horror. Dead bodies were strewn all over the place. The debris of shattered buildings and their contents filled the street.

Father Bacaltos' self-appointed task that day was to bless the bodies that lay scattered around his parish.

He crossed the road to the hospital opposite the church compound, tending to each of the corpses in its grounds. He then moved onto other areas that weren't blocked off by walls of wreckage.

Hi my dear friends,

I'm so sorry for not responding in time, was so busy trying to help in the relief efforts here in Chicago. The Filipino Community here in Chicago are pooling and converging donations in food, money, clothing and goods here at the Irving Park Center and sending them by way of the Philippine Red Cross to the Philippines. Just yesterday as I was at a super store called Target one of the Filipino doctors at work saw me and reminded me that the goods will be shipped to the Philippines by Friday (today). Salamat to all that helped and donated for our kababayans.

This week has been hectic for me too because I have been busy reaching out to my extended family. Yes, i even reactivated my facebook account. hehe !

Salamat sa Ginoo my family in Bohol are okay. And members of the Lucino Clan in Southern Leyte, Samar, Leyte, Cebu, Butuan and Surigao are all right. When I logged back on and contacted relatives, i was brought to tears. Many of my distant relatives whose homes were around Ormoc and the northern part of Southern Leyte were damaged, but, all that can be replaced. Salamat sa Ginoo that they are okay. Salamat for the prayers and thoughts, my friends. Let us always give thanks to God who gives strength to our bodies and gives all of us the blessing that is life and health.

Love and kisses to all of you guys. My prayers are with all of you and those who have relatives and friends who have been affected by this typhoon.

With Love,
I remain,
Bran Lorenzo

btw, for those who have never experienced the arduous journey that is the doctoral dissertation phase, we have to go through the IRB , Institutional Review Board, which is usually a 3 phase part. Citation , specifically APA format, is mandated and critically enforced.

For those who are interested in going into research / grant writing / scientific scholarship, don't ever fak around with citations.

Last week I attended a mandatory seminar for all Ph.D students -- regarding the ethical use of citation.

Looking at the statistical analysis part -- quite daunting. Shiet. LOL. I have to really master multivariate statistical analysis. Sakit ahoang ulo.

Thanks to Dr. R. Smith, PH.D for allowing me to read his doctoral dissertation....

Btw, excellent flow chart pod ijang gi use. This gives me an idea on what to implement.

I'm now looking at possible topics for my doctoral dissertation. Starting early. After talking to my academic advisor, I am looking to start applying for grant providers for my research process. O man, talk about overwhelming stress lol!

I didn't know we had to do grant application process pa gajod. I now have a new-found respect for all Ph.D scholars and Ph.D doctoral learners that are further into their dissertation process as in -- post-grant phase. LOL!

I just finished one doctoral class, Psychology of Leadership. Today starts the first day of my next class called Doctoral Statistics. Seems good so far. Today's lecture was based on variance and variability. I'm going to take advantage of the IBM SPSS skills lab , this will be useful during the dissertation process later on.

Today's lecture was on the variance of hypergeometric distribution  and hypergeometric formulation and the equations are as follows:

Variance of hypergeometric distribution
= σx2 = n * k * ( N - k ) * ( N - n ) / [ N2 * ( N - 1 ) ]

Hypergeometric formula: P(X = x) = h(x; N, n, k) = [ kCx ] [ N-kCn-x ] / [ NCn ]

Our professor for this course has a Ph.D in Statistics and another Ph.D on Industrial Engineering. He thinks this course is easy kono. Jati-a pod! Some of us are doctors and not mathematicians / engineers.
