How To Tips / How to Catch a Liar user
September 01, 2010, 12:22:41 AM
by Reader's Digest Magazine, on Thu Aug 12, 2010

1. How is the person speaking?
Although a change in voice can be the tip-off to a lie, experts say that to be sure, you should also pay attention to a person's speech rate and breathing pattern -- if either speeds up or slows down, chances are you're not hearing the whole truth.

2. What is the person saying?
Liars tend to avoid exclusionary words like "but," "nor," "except," and "whereas," because they have trouble with complex thought processes. Liars are less likely to use the words "I," "me," and "mine." In their attempts to distance themselves psychologically from their tall tales, liars will tend to communicate using fewer personal pronouns.

3. Is his face giving it away?
You may think disguising your true feelings is easily accomplished with the help of a smile, but the expressions that flash across your face will give away what you're really thinking -- whether you know it or not. Experts advise paying close attention to the micro-expressions that a face can't hide. These clues are often so difficult to detect that even trained experts have trouble discerning them.

4. How is the person smiling?
A smile can sometimes mask a person's true feelings. Pay close attention to how a person smiles as well as other facial movements. You may be able to detect the emotions he or she is trying to hide -- such as fear, anger, and disgust. A true smile will incorporate both a person's lips and eyes.

5. Does the body language follow the story?
It's more important to examine a person's entire demeanor, as there's no one feature that's apt to give away a liar. Honesty is characterized by features that are in sync with one another -- so besides posture, note the fit between face, body, voice, and speech.

6. Is your subject behaving uncharacteristically?
Experts believe changes in a person's baseline -- how she generally conducts herself -- are worthy of your attention. You should weigh rate of speech, tone of voice, posture, and hand gestures against what you know, along with the context of the situation.

7. Is the question simple or embarrassing?
It's normal for someone to look away when asked a difficult question. But when someone avoids your gaze when asked a simple question, you should be suspicious.

I think there is no need for P-NOY to create another unit. We have enough elite units in the military and police. What they need is augmentation on their weaponry, trainings and gadgets.

These are the current elite special forces of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Philippine Army:
1st Scout Ranger Regiment - Philippine Army's primary special forces who specialized in anti-guerilla warfare.

Special Forces Regiment - primarily trained in counter-insurgency operations, unconventional and psychological warfare. this similar to the US green beret.

Light Reaction Battalion - this is the lead counter-terrorist unit of the philippine army which is a combination of scout rangers and special forces highly trained by the US special forces.

Philippine Navy:
Naval Special Warfare Group - Naval Special Operations Group also known as SWAG is similar to the US navy seals. this is the elite unit of the philippine navy trained in special operations, sabotage, psychological and unconventional warfare.

Philippine Marine Corps:
Philippine Marine Corps Force Recon Battalion - a.k.a. Marine Force Recon is the Philippine Naval Fleet's/ Philippine Marine Corps' elite ground forces unit for unconventional warfare and special operations specialized in sea, air and land operations, just like its counterpart the Naval Special Warfare Group  of the Philippine Navy. their operations ranges from reconnaissance, close combat, demolition, intelligence and underwater operations in support to the overall naval operations.

Philippine Air Force:
710th Special Operations Wing - is the rapid deployment force of the Philippine Air Force (PAF), which is divided into ten-man airborne attack teams as most of its members are airborne qualified. the wing also controls the 772nd Explosives and Ordinance Squadron and the 773rd K-9s Kennels.

Philippine National Police:
Special Action Force - is the primary special forces unit of the Philippine National Police which is equivalent to British SAS and Israel's YAMAM but with different recruitment and selection procedures. over the years since it's inception, the SAF had received training from the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) and Critical Incident Response Group as well as RAID (Research, Assistance, Intervention, Deterrence). it is also the Anti-Terrorist Unit (ATU) of the PNP-SAF which is responsible for nationwide Police Counter-terrorism  (CT) operations nationwide. Meanwhile, the regions have specially-equipped and trained Regional Mobile Forces (RMF or RMG) which used to be the Light Reaction Unit (LRU) in Metro Manila and the Regional SAF (RSAF) in the provinces. this police unit had undergone several special military combat related training such as airborne forces training, urban warfare and internal security.

PNP-SWAT - better known as the Special Weapons and Tactics patterned from the US SWAT. their duties include performing hostage rescues and counter-terrorism  operations, serving high risk arrest and search warrants, subduing barricaded suspects, and engaging heavily-armed criminals. they are often equipped with specialized firearms including submachine guns, assault rifles, breaching shotguns, riot control agents, stun grenades and sniper rifles. they also have specialized equipment including heavy body armor, ballistic shields, entry tools, armored vehicles, advanced night vision optics, and motion detectors for covertly determining the positions of hostages or hostage takers inside of an enclosed structure.

this is a very dangerous fight for boom boom. it will be a make or break fight for him. if he wins this one, surely he can continue fighting but if he loses this one specially via KO. it's the end of the road for him. he better hang up his gloves, go back to school and find another means of earning money. he is still young so it's yet too late to return to school and finished a degree. he turn into a boxing trainer to support his studies. i guess ALA will help him.

actually there are 2 alejandro barrera boxers from Mexico. alejandro "el elegido" barrera from monterrey, nuevo leon, mexico who is an undefeated superwelterweight fighter with a record of 14 wins with 12 KO's and alejandro "zorrito" barrera from mexico city, distrito federal, mexico who has a decent record of 20 wins 3 losses with 13 KO wins. el elegido means the chosen one in english while zorrito means little zorro, a spanish legend.

talking about boom boom's opponent which is zorrito, the reason why ALA pick him up as his opponent is because he lost 3 of his last 5 fights where his has lost was against a veteran journeyman carlos urias via 1st KO for the vacant WBC FECARBOX lightweight title where barrera was down twice before being counted out last january 9, 2010. nobody expected that to happen since urias record during that fight was a miserable one; 42 wins 23 losses while barrera has 19 wins 2 losses and was considered a prospect. everyone was expecting that the fight against urias was just a walk in the park for barrera but it turns out to be the other way around. barrera's other 2 losses were both dealt from top caliber fighters. he lost to beniot gaudet of quebec, canada last aug. 29, 2008 via 10 round unanimous decision for the NABA superfeatherweight title. incidentally, gaudet is the one who challenged humberto soto for the WBC superfeatherweight belt as an undercard to Manny pacquiao's 2 round destruction of ricky hatton in las vegas. other notable opponent of gaudet was pipino cuevas jr. whom he destroyed last may 28, 2010 in quebec via 8th TKO in a non-title fight. cuevas, jr. is also fighting in the same card opposite jimrex jaca. his other loss was against wily veteran cesar "la cobrita" soto last may 30, 2008 via 10 round split decision. as we can remember soto had 2 great fights with our own legend luisito "lindol" espinosa for the WBC featherweight title. they split the 2 fights where louie won the first fight in manila then soto won it el paso 3 years later.

alejandro won his first 18 fights, 12 of which via KO before losing to cesar soto. that's the reason why he was considered as a top prospect that time. he is also the former NABA superbantamweight and WBC continental americas featherweight champion. this will be an acid test for boom boom. hopefully he can hurdle this one with a bang to get more lucrative offers abroad.

#1262

i've heard from a friend that the most intriguing and hazardous job is deep sea welder. you will have to undergo intense training for 6 months underneath the ocean to acclaimatize yourself in the ocean floor and in its climate. the salary? you can earn P5 million in less than 2 years i believe. but according to my friend, you are only given up to 5 years to work on that job. there are so many side effects.

There was control by the police during the course of the hostage drama which started at around 7am. Onlookers are barred and even reporters are not allowed to go near the bus. It was just the police acted slowly and they had to rely from the statement of the bus driver who escaped who told them that all hostages are dead at the time of his escape. Aside from that, they were not able to verify or re-negotiate with capt. mendoza about his new demands. Most of the SWAT operatives of MPD are not ready in this kind of situation as you can see some of their members are so relax. Some seen just wearing a bullcap and just standing beside the bus as if he's waiting for someone to come down. They throw tear gas without them wearing gas masks. As you can see when they entered the bus for the clearing operation, they were not wearing anything. Some of them are only wearing surgical masks. So they got stinged by the gas and they went out gasping for air and tearing eyed. Good thing it was raining, they just wiped their eyes with water from the downpour.
The video reached the whole world and the whole world are laughing at our police operatives most specially the SWAT operatives who are considered an elite police unit.

the most comical blunder made by a SWAT operative in a hostage crisis was shown on tv earlier today. a SWAT operative hammering the windshield of the bus lost the handle of the sledge hammer and ended it inside the bus. hahaha. he needed some aid from his colleagues who uses a shield to protect in getting back the hammer inside the bus via the busted door. good thing is, the bus is big and that the hostage taker missed seeing that police.

Iran's first unmanned bomber they called Ambassador of Death.

TEHRAN, Iran â€" Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Sunday inaugurated the country's first domestically built unmanned bomber aircraft, calling it an "ambassador of death" to Iran's enemies.

The 4-meter-long drone aircraft can carry up to four cruise missiles and will have a range of 620 miles (1,000 kilometers), according to a state TV report â€" not far enough to reach archenemy Israel.

"The jet, as well as being an ambassador of death for the enemies of humanity, has a main message of peace and friendship," said Ahmadinejad at the inauguration ceremony, which fell on the country's national day for its defense industries.

The goal of the aircraft, named Karrar or striker, is to "keep the enemy paralyzed in its bases," he said, adding that the aircraft is for deterrence and defensive purposes.

The president championed the country's military self-sufficiency program, and said it will continue "until the enemies of humanity lose hope of ever attacking the Iranian nation."

Iran launched an arms development program during its 1980-88 war with Iraq to compensate for a U.S. weapons embargo and now produces its own tanks, armored personnel carries, missiles and even a fighter plane.

Iran frequently makes announcements about new advances in military technology that cannot be independently verified.

State TV later showed video footage of the plane taking off from a launching pad and reported that the craft traveled at speeds of 560 miles per hour (900 kilometers per hour) and could alternatively be armed with two 250-pound (113.4-kilogram) bombs or a 450-pound (204.12-kilogram) guided bomb.

Iran has been producing its own light, unmanned surveillance aircraft since the late 1980s.

The ceremony came a day after Iran began to fuel its first nuclear power reactor, with the help of Russia, amid international concerns over the possibility of a military dimension to its nuclear program.

Iran insists it is only interested in generating electricity.

Referring to Israel's occasional threats against Iran's nuclear facilities, Ahmadinejad called any attack unlikely, but he said if Israel did, the reaction would be overwhelming.

"The scope of Iran's reaction will include the entire the earth," said Ahmadinejad. "We also tell you â€" the West â€" that all options are on the table."

Ahmadinejad appeared to be consciously echoing the terminology used by the U.S. and Israel in their statements not ruling out a military option against Iran's nuclear facilities.

On Friday, Iran also test-fired a new liquid fuel surface-to-surface missile, the Qiam-1, with advanced guidance systems.

8 killed on hijacked Philippine tourist bus

MANILA, Philippines â€" A 12-hour hostage stand-off on a hijacked Philippine bus ended in bloodshed Monday, with officials saying at least seven Chinese tourists were dead along with the disgruntled ex-policeman who seized their vehicle in a bid to get his job back.

At least six captives survived, four of whom were seen crawling out the back door of the bus after Philippine police stormed it Monday evening when the hostage-taker started shooting at the 15 Chinese tourists inside, said police Senior Superintendent Nelson Yabut.

He said the hostage-taker was killed with a sniper shot to the head after he wounded a police sharpshooter.

Police and ambulances were lined up next to the vehicle in the pouring rain after the standoff ended. Local hospitals reported seven bodies of hostages were brought in. One other hostage was hospitalized in critical condition, and five others were unharmed.

Officials have yet to disclose the fate of the two other hostages.

The crisis began when the dismissed policeman, Rolando Mendoza, 55, armed with a M16 rifle seized the busload of Hong Kong tourists to demand his reinstatement in the force.

According to newspaper reports from 2008, he was among five officers who had been charged with robbery, extortion and grave threats after a Manila hotel chef filed a complaint alleging the policemen falsely accused him of using drugs to extort money.

The gunman released nine hostages during the afternoon â€" leaving 15 inside â€" and demanded his job back to free the rest. Despite hopes that negotiations might bring the stand-off to a peaceful conclusion, tensions escalated as night closed in.

Police said they stormed the bus after they saw Mendoza open fire on hostages.

Moments before the commandos moved in, the Filipino driver fled. Police officer Roderick Mariano cited him as saying Mendoza had opened fire at the tourists.

LOS ANGELES â€" Next month's opening of the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools will be auspicious for a reason other than its both storied and infamous history as the former Ambassador Hotel, where the Democratic presidential contender was assassinated in 1968.

With an eye-popping price tag of $578 million, it will mark the inauguration of the nation's most expensive public school ever.

The K-12 complex to house 4,200 students has raised eyebrows across the country as the creme de la creme of "Taj Mahal" schools, $100 million-plus campuses boasting both architectural panache and deluxe amenities.

"There's no more of the old, windowless cinderblock schools of the '70s where kids felt, 'Oh, back to jail,'" said Joe Agron, editor-in-chief of American School & University, a school construction journal. "Districts want a showpiece for the community, a really impressive environment for learning."

Not everyone is similarly enthusiastic.

"New buildings are nice, but when they're run by the same people who've given us a 50 percent dropout rate, they're a big waste of taxpayer money," said Ben Austin, executive director of Parent Revolution who sits on the California Board of Education. "Parents aren't fooled."

At RFK, the features include fine art murals and a marble memorial depicting the complex's namesake, a manicured public park, a state-of-the-art swimming pool and preservation of pieces of the original hotel.

Partly by circumstance and partly by design, the Los Angeles Unified School District has emerged as the mogul of Taj Mahals.

The RFK complex follows on the heels of two other LA schools among the nation's costliest â€" the $377 million Edward R. Roybal Learning Center, which opened in 2008, and the $232 million Visual and Performing Arts High School that debuted in 2009.

The pricey schools have come during a sensitive period for the nation's second-largest school system: Nearly 3,000 teachers have been laid off over the past two years, the academic year and programs have been slashed. The district also faces a $640 million shortfall and some schools persistently rank among the nation's lowest performing.

Los Angeles is not alone, however, in building big. Some of the most expensive schools are found in low-performing districts â€" New York City has a $235 million campus; New Brunswick, N.J., opened a $185 million high school in January.

Nationwide, dozens of schools have surpassed $100 million with amenities including atriums, orchestra-pit auditoriums, food courts, even bamboo nooks. The extravagance has led some to wonder where the line should be drawn and whether more money should be spent on teachers.

"Architects and builders love this stuff, but there's a little bit of a lack of discipline here," said Mary Filardo, executive director of 21st Century School Fund in Washington, D.C., which promotes urban school construction.

Some experts say it's not all flourish and that children learn better in more pleasant surroundings.

Many schools incorporate large windows to let in natural light and install energy-saving equipment, spending more upfront for reduced bills later. Cafeterias are getting fancier, seeking to retain students who venture off campus. Wireless Internet and other high-tech installations have become standard.

Some pricey projects have had political fallout.

After a firestorm over the $197.5 million Newton North High School in Massachusetts, Mayor David Cohen chose not to seek re-election and state Treasurer Timothy Cahill reined in school construction spending.

Now to get state funds for a new school, districts must choose among three designs costing $49 million to $64 million. "We had to bring some sense to this process," Cahill said.

In Los Angeles, officials say the new schools were planned long before the economic pinch and are funded by $20 billion in voter-approved bonds that do not affect the educational budget.

Still, even LA Unified Superintendent Ramon Cortines derided some of the extravagance, noting that donations should have been sought to fund the RFK project's talking benches commemorating the site's history.

Connie Rice, member of the district's School Bond Oversight Committee, noted the megaschools are only three of 131 that the district is building to alleviate overcrowding. RFK "is an amazing facility," she said. "Is it a lot of money? Yes. We didn't like it, but they got it done."

Construction costs at LA Unified are the second-highest in the nation â€" something the district blames on skyrocketing material and land prices, rigorous seismic codes and unionized labor.

James Sohn, the district's chief facilities executive, said the megaschools were built when global raw material shortages caused costs to skyrocket to an average of $600 per square foot in 2006 and 2007 â€" triple the price from 2002. Costs have since eased to $350 per square foot.

On top of that, each project had its own cost drivers.

After buildings were demolished at the site of the 2,400-student Roybal school, contaminated soil, a methane gas field and an earthquake fault were discovered. A gas mitigation system cost $17 million.

Over 20 years, the project grew to encompass a dance studio with cushioned maple floors, a modern kitchen with a restaurant-quality pizza oven, a 10-acre park and teacher planning rooms between classrooms.

The 1,700-student arts school was designed as a landmark, with a stainless steel, postmodernistic tower encircled by a rollercoaster-like swirl, while the RFK site involved 15 years of litigation with historic preservationists and Donald Trump, who wanted to build the world's tallest building there. The wrangling cost $9 million.

Methane mitigation cost $33 million and the district paid another $15 million preserving historic features, including a wall of the famed Cocoanut Grove nightclub and turning the Paul Williams-designed coffee shop into a faculty lounge.

Sohn said LA Unified has reached the end of its Taj Mahal building spree. "These are definitely the exceptions," he said. "We don't anticipate schools costing hundreds of millions of dollars in the future."
