- /EIM (BANAT NEWS)

Davao police intel chief, 3 others charged for slay of trader Richard King
June 25, 2014 7:54am

A ranking police officer assigned to the Davao region and three others were charged Tuesday afternoon with murder for the June 12 killing of hotelier Richard King.

Senior Superintendent Leonardo Felonia was among four charged for the crime, RGMA's Raul Tolibas reported on dzBB radio Wednesday morning.

Felonia, who surrendered to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte late Monday, was relieved from his post as head of the Philippine National Police's Regional Intelligence Office.

He was also ordered to report to national headquarters for investigation, the RGMA report said.

On Monday, the police officer had presented himself to Duterte for "voluntary investigation."

A report by GMA Davao's Helen Quiñanola said those also charged Tuesday afternoon included:

- Paul Dave Labang
- Rommel dela Cerna
- Rodel dela Cerna

King reportedly owns the Crown Regency Group of Hotels.

His relatives and Mayor Duterte had offered a P1.3-million reward in exchange for information leading to the arrest of the suspected killer.

Labang was arrested Sunday, with GMA Davao reporting he confessed to the crime and sought forgiveness from King's family.

The RGMA report said Labang claimed Felonia contracted his services to gun down King.

Restrictive custody

Police Regional Office 11 spokesman Chief Inspector Jed Clamor said Felonia has orders for his restrictive custody in the PNP Intelligence Group in Manila.

"So as soon as he gets into Manila he will be taken into custody," Clamor said.

However, Clamor also said the police have no legal grounds for his arrest at this time.

"We will let the investigation run its course," he said. â€" Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News

Philippine Photo Gallery / Re: Bonsai forest
June 24, 2014, 07:05:23 PM
Bonsai is a widely popular and quite expensive pursuit of art form where specific species of trees suitable for bonsai development are meticulously cut and shaped to restrict its growth; with its crown defoliated, and root pruned, and grafted periodically to make them small and compact purposely to mimic the shape and style of mature, full-grown trees. It is an ancient art form that has become a tradition in Japan and other Asian countries. But, in the Philippines, particularly in Davao Oriental, Mindanao, Bonsai trees are naturally grown and shaped over time, untouched by human hands.

This unique wonder of nature can only be found in the lush forest of Mount Hamiguitan located within the boundaries of Mati, Governor Generoso, and San Isidro, Davao Oriental. Popularly known as "Bonsai Forest", it is the Philippines' largest and only protected forest noted for its unique bonsai field or 'pygmy' forest of outstanding universal value. It sits in an elevation of 5,345 feet above sea level, covering a sprawling area of almost a thousand hectares of 16 species of century-old bonsai trees of twisted trunks and branches that grow naturally to an average height of about 1.4 meters. The bonsai trees are very sturdy that one can literally stand over it without falling. Because of the rampant timber poaching, illegal logging, and over harvesting of forest products and resources, Mt. Hamiguitan and its vicinities was declared a protected area under the category of wildlife sanctuary and its peripheral areas as buffer zone by virtue of Republic Act 9303 on July 30, 2004.

'Global validation'

What does the recognition mean for the Philippines and for the management of Mount Hamiguitan?

"We are very happy about it. It's another global validation of our rich biodiversity and highlights our efforts in managing our Protected Areas," Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB) chief Theresa Mundita Lim told Rappler.

Augusto Villalon, the technical representative of the Philippines to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee told Rappler that no cash reward accompanies the citation.

"Inscription goes beyond prestige. It signifies that the site is among the select in the world that is of global significance. Inscription commits the host country to continue and improve the conservation and maintenance of the site."

The sanctuary is managed by the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) and the BMB both under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Lim said the new title is bound to strengthen the motivation of different stakeholders to protect the mountain range.

"The communities around Mt Hamiguitan should take pride in this new recognition. It inspires us to strengthen efforts to keep it protected and preserve the very reasons why it has been now named a UNESCO World Heritage Site," she told Rappler.

Mount Hamiguitan is the 6th site in the Philippines and the country's first mountain range to be included in the World Heritage List. (READ: Celebrating PH's World Heritage sites)

The other 5 are a group of Baroque churches, the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Cordillera rice terraces, the historic town of Vigan, and the Puerto Princesa Underground River. â€" Rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines â€" A mountain range in Davao Oriental now claims a coveted spot in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List.

Delegates of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee voted to grant the status to Mount Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary during the committee's 38th Session on Monday, June 23 in Doha, Qatar.

It is one of 26 new sites added to the list this year, including the ancient Inca road network Qhapaq Nan and the historic cave Grotte Chauvet in France.

The more than 16,000-hectare mountain range runs from north to south along the Pujada Peninsula in the Eastern Mindanao Biodiversity Corridor. Its peak is more than 1,600 meters above sea level.

This protected area boasts the largest "pygmy forest," a field of bonsai trees estimated to be around 100 years old. This unique forest occupies around 225 hectares of the sanctuary.

The description in the UNESCO World Heritage List page reads, "The property showcases terrestrial and aquatic habitats at different elevations, and includes threatened and endemic flora and fauna species, 8 of which are found only at Mount Hamiguitan."

The mountain is home to the critically-endangered Philippine Eagle and Philippine Cockatoo.

From its cliffs grow 338 species of majestic dipterocarp trees, 462 species of plants, mossy forests and closed canopy forests.

According to Pinoy mountaineer Gideon Lasco, the mountain range also features a "Tinagong Dagat" (hidden sea), a lake that mysteriously experiences high tide and low tide.

Four Decades Among the Agta:
Trials and Advantages of Long-Term Fieldwork With Philippine Hunter-Gatherers

Thomas N. Headland and Janet D. Headland

Background

This paper was first presented at the 90th Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association, Chicago, November 20-24, 1991, in an invited symposium entitled "Theoretical and Methodological Flexibility in Long-Term Field Research," with Elizabeth Colson, George Foster, Robert Kemper, Conrad Kottak, and Richard Lee. A few revisions have been added to this version, and major additions made in 1999 appear in the text below in square brackets.

Abstract

The authors here describe their many years of living with Agta Negritos in the Philippines as lay missionaries with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. The Headlands have been studying the language and culture of these rainforest hunter-gatherers since 1962, and recording the Agta's struggles as they have attempted to adjust to the thousands of colonists who have migrated into their area since the 1960s. They discuss here the degradation of the rainforest by logging and mining corporations, expanding agriculture, game decline, and new diseases. Only long-term research allowed the Headlands to understand Agta culture change, to realize that the Agta population was declining and why, and to document first-hand the surprising ways these foragers lives were changed as they struggled to survive the onslaughts of "modernization." They also review their personal challenges and advantages of raising their three children among the Agta.

History / The Tribe Of Giant Snake Victims
June 23, 2014, 01:26:02 AM
In 1962, anthropologist Thomas Headland moved to Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines, setting up camp with the Agta people. While moviegoers watched Lawrence of Arabia, Rachel Carson published Silent Spring, and the world focused on the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Agta were living like ancient hunter-gatherers in the Filipino rainforests.

They were also at war with the local snake population. A quarter of the men had been attacked by reticulated pythons. The longest snake in the world, this creature can grow to over 7 meters (23 ft) and can weigh over 75 kilograms (165 lb). Compare that to the average Agta, who stands less than 150 centimeters (5′) and rarely weighs as much as an American 13-year-old.

Since they were small, lived in the jungle, and competed with pythons over food, the Agta often came to blows with these giant snakes. Out of 120 interviewees, Headland found 26 percent of the men had encountered angry pythons, and many bore the scars to back up their claims. Between the 1940s and 1970s, six people were killed by these snakes, including two kids who were gobbled up on the same night.

The Agta didn’t just sit back and let these serpents slither all over them. Every single man had killed at least one python in his lifeâ€"or so each claimed, at least. The men regularly went around armed with guns and machetes. The father of the kids who were eaten stabbed the python responsible to death.

There aren’t as many “man vs. snake” battles on Luzon today. Thanks to encroaching modernization, the Agta have largely given up their old way of life. Since they’re no longer living in the middle of snake country, the attack rates have dropped dramatically. But the reticulated pythons are still out there, hunting in the jungle, so if you ever visit Luzon, stick to the cities. -- http://listverse.com/

Miroslav Klose

With five goals, he was the top scorer and Golden Boot winner at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the first German player to win the award since the reunification.

Klose also scored five goals in his debut World Cup, the 2002 World Cup, all of which were headers. He scored four times in the 2010 World Cup, and has one time thus far in the 2014 World Cup, giving him a total of 15 World Cup goals. This total tied Klose for the most goals scored in the FIFA World Cup with Ronaldo of Brazil.

Klose is also one of only two players, along with Peruvian Teófilo Cubillas, to have scored at least five goals in two different World Cups, as well as the only player to have scored at least four in three different tournaments. --Wiki

How To Tips / How to Spot a Fake Millionaire
June 23, 2014, 12:38:24 AM
Written by Angela
https://www.seekingmillionaire.com/

Women who want to date millionaires are motivated by a several reasons. And it takes a certain mindset to be able to date a master of the universe. But it can be frustrating trying to find the right mate. Though we wish they could be eradicated, fake millionaires are a dime a dozen. Even with the available technology out there, websites find it hard to force men to reveal personal information for verification. Please note: Seeking Millionaire insists that you consider dating only verified members. However, there are a few tell-tail signs that any woman can use to vet those that claim they are millionaires.

Lack of Necessities

If you have not seen his alleged estateâ€"or a car for that matterâ€"within a few months of dating, be weary. Many millionaires aren’t into flaunting their wealth with luxury vehicles or real estate, but it is a red flag if he lacks necessities. However, don’t be quick to judge a man who drives a modest car. Some men like cars, other enjoy spending their money on vacations, clothes, etc.

Language Skills of a First-Grader

Usually easiest to spot these men when viewing their profiles. A millionaire has an education and is meticulous when it comes to his image, so you shouldn’t see typos in his profile description. Keep in mind that text messages don’t apply to this rule completely. Plenty of millionaires who view short-hand text messaging as appropriate.

Lack of Manners

He doesn’t hold open the door. He sneezes openly at the table. The list goes on. A general lack of manners should be a deal-breaker for any potential relationship. Note that any man who is used to dealing with other wealthy individuals should have at least a general grasp of proper mannersâ€"especially when dealing with women.

Talks about the Money...all the Time

While talking about millionaires, Brandon Wade once told me, “If you have it, then you don’t flaunt it.” Fake millionaires are easy to spot because they will find any opportunity to talk about their finances.

Name Dropping

Fake millionaires often drop names of famous or well-known individuals as a way to show competency. Whereas a real millionaire only talks about business contacts at the appropriate moments.

Various memes about Revilla and the supposed special treatment provided for the senators have started to go viral on the Internet.

For instance, a post showed a man, supposedly a thief who admitted stealing a cellphone, had been beaten up for his crime. The author noted the difference between stealing something worth P10,000 and being accused of pocketing millions in government funds.

Meanwhile, Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez urged the National Economic and Development Authority to integrate disaster resiliency and risk reduction in its 10-year development plan.

Rodriguez said recent natural and man-made calamities in the country resulted in relatively fewer casualties yet higher damage costs and economic losses.

While there is strengthened disaster preparedness and response capacity and capability, this could also mean that not enough is being done to assess and address natural hazard risks as an integral part of development planning and investment, he said.

“Higher damage costs and increasing economic losses are a result of unsustainable development and mal‐adaptation initiatives, such as from unplanned urbanization and the unsustainable management of land and natural resources that increase exposure to hazards,” Rodriguez said.

It is also important to coordinate laws, policies and institutional mechanisms for addressing climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction, especially in the context of overall development planning, he said.

“There is a need to ensure that there is a synergy between disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation at the highest levels by developing specific policies at both the international and local levels on the linkages between reducing disaster risk and responding to climate change,” Rodriguez said.

Muntinlupa City Rep. Rodolfo Biazon, chairman of the House committee on national defense and security, also called on the executive department to utilize the engineering brigades of the Armed Forces in the reconstruction and rehabilitation projects of the government as “a cost effective approach.” With Paolo Romero

MANILA - A network of supporters, relatives and survivors of Super Typhoon Yolanda highlighted the glaring difference between the detention cells for senators involved in the pork barrel fund scam and the bunkhouses built for victims of the typhoon.

“The clear and wide gap of discrepancies between the pork detention cells and the bunkhouses for Yolanda victims and survivors only shows who really the Aquino government is serving,” said Tindog People’s Network spokesman Mark Louie Aquino.

“By the looks of the comparative data, we are angered by the special accommodation being given to pork barrel accused while giving less to the poor victims of Yolanda,” he added.

A side-by-side comparison of the specifications â€" which has started to make the rounds on social media sites â€" showed that the detention cells at 32 square meters were almost twice the size of the rooms in bunkhouses, which is only 17.28 sq. meters.

It added the detention cells were made of concrete and have tiled floors, while the bunkhouses were made of cement footing, plywood flooring and walls, coco lumber wooden frames, and GI sheet roofing.

A detention cell also has a toilet bowl, shower and a sink; while those living in a bunkhouse with 12 units only have four comfort rooms.

A common cooking area is allotted for each bunkhouse with 12 units, while the detention cell even has two cabinets. It also noted the lack of furniture in the bunkhouse, while a bed, side table and ceiling fan was provided for the high priority cells.

The Aquino government seems to be coddling officials accused of corruption while neglecting the welfare of the Yolanda survivors, said the network in a statement.

Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. on Friday was ordered arrested by the Sandiganbayan on charges of graft and plunder. He was detained in the detention facility in Camp Crame in Quezon City.

Reports said he has complained of migraine due to the heat, and would be requesting the court to allow him to have a cooler inside his cell.

Lani visits Bong in jail
(philstar.com) | Updated June 21, 2014 - 3:48pm

Lani and Bong embrace before the senator surrendered to the Sandiganbayan.

MANILA, Philippines -  Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado on Saturday visited her husband, detained Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr., in his detention cell at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Quezon City.

It was Mercado's first visit following Revilla's surrender on Friday. Revilla is facing the non-bailable plunder case, among others, stemming from the alleged multi-billion scheme to divert taxpayers' money to bogus foundations of Janet Lim Napoles, the alleged pork scam mastermind.

Following his surrender, Revilla on Friday complained of suffering from migraine attack because his detention cell was "hot".

Mercado has requested that they be allowed to bring air cooler to the detention cell. The Sandiganbayan, however, would still have to approve such a request.

The congresswoman has also asked the PNP to allow their family to visit Revilla everyday.

Revilla allegedly pocketed P517 million from the scam. His camp, however, has sought to be granted bail, saying the evidence against him is weak.

Researchers at Northwestern University have found evidence for a massive reservoir of water deep within the Earth's mantle. The reservoir, which is said to be three times the volume of the oceans on the surface, is contained within highly-pressurized rock known as ringwoodite. The scientists hope that their findings, recently published in the journal Science, can shed light on where Earth's oceans came from.

THREE TIMES THE VOLUME OF THE OCEANS ON EARTH'S SURFACE

The team, led by mineralogist Steven Jacobsen, used an array of 2000 seismometers to study how seismic waves generated by earthquakes move through the Earth's interior. The waves' speed changed depending on the type of rock they pass through, and wet ringwoodite has a particular effect on wave velocity. Jacobsen was able to reproduce wet ringwoodite in his lab, and the group's findings matched what he observed in the lab. As it turns out, ringwoodite, under the extreme heat and pressure of the mantle, bleeds water. That water would then become trapped in the transition zone at between roughly 200 and 400 miles underground.

The new research lends credence to theories that our oceans originated on Earth. However, more tests will need to be conducted moving forward. Jacobsen's team could only verify that the reservoir exists below the continental United States, so it's unclear how far this "ocean" extends.

King was a popular business figure in Cebu and had appeared in the news several times.

In 2002, he accused then Regional Trial Court judge Agapito Hontanosas of soliciting P250,000 for a favorable court decision in relation to a writ of attachment on property he filed against Nelson and Lucy Go. Nelson and Lucy were business partners of Roderick Go who, according to King, owed him P97 million and allegedly tried to kill him.

In 2004, Richard and his three brothers sued Sun.Star Cebu Public Standards editor Pachico A. Seares and columnist Elias Espinoza for writing allegedly malicious statements linking the Kings to the seized pseudoephedrine. The complaint against Seares was eventually dismissed.

In 2007, Richard and brother Rafael accused then Lapu-Lapu City mayor Arturo Radaza of asking for a P15-million bribe from a contractor (Nelson Yu), who reportedly got four big projects in the city worth P500 million. The accusation prompted Radaza to file charges of grave threat and violation of the Anti-Wiretapping Law against the King brothers.

In November 2012, members of an indigenous people’s group in Boracay claimed Richard hired armed men to attack their community and destroy the fence they had put up. The Kings built a Crown Regency Hotel and Resort in Boracay.

In September 2012, King was ordered by the Office of the Building Official in Cebu City to stop construction work of an 18-storey building in Barangay Lorega after the soil beneath the sidewalk caved in.

Amid the controversies, Richard, a chemical engineer, was known for implementing new concepts in the hotel industry. Crown Regency Hotel and Towers is the first of its kind to feature amusement facilities, including a roller coaster-like ride on the top floor of its 40-story hotel tower.

In 2006, Richard proposed a water theme park at the South Road Properties to then Cebu City mayor Tomas Osmeña. (Sun.Star Cebu)

CEBU (Updated) - Businessman Richard L. King, the owner of Crown Regency Group of Hotels, was shot dead inside the Vital C Building on Sobrecary St. in Davao City at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

Major Warren Dablo of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Davao said that King, 57, suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He died on the spot.

The CIDG and the local police in Davao are jointly investigating the attack.

King was chairman and chief executive officer of J. King & Sons Co. Inc., developer of Crown Regency, Club Ultima and the City Suites Ramos Tower. He was also the founder and Director of Boracay Multiple Properties Inc.

He was eating with his employees and the participants and guests at the ground floor of the two-storey building when the gunman, who was not wearing a mask, walked in and shot King several times.

After the attack, the gunman, described to be about 5’5” tall and with medium build, fled on board a black XRM motorcycle driven by a companion who was waiting outside.

Dablo said the building has no security camera. There was also no security guard on duty when the attack happened.

Witnesses are helping the police in coming up with an sketch of the gunman, Dablo said.

Dablo said the joint team is still establishing the motive of the attack, but they are not discounting the angle that the attack was business-related.

Latin for “Let there be Light,” Fiax Lux had its humble beginnings in 1973, when its founder, a Swiss secretary named Erika Bertschinger, fell on her head during a horse ride. Subsequently, she discovered she was the Virgin Mary and could communicate with transcendental beings, such as Jesus Christ. Changing her name to Uriella, she established her largely ascetic group in 1980 and later transferred it to their current headquarters in Germany’s Black Forest area.

Uriella and her group believed that the world would be devastated in the middle of 1998 by Nazi flying saucers and natural disasters. They also believed that friendly aliens would come to rescue the chosen few and use them to resettle a new paradise on Earth. However, when the appointed time came and passed, Uriella told her members that God had temporarily postponed the event because they all prayed very hard. Since then, the group has laid low, biding their time until another end of the world. -- http://listverse.com/

Sand, cement, wood and steel are the latest tools in China's territorial arsenal as it seeks to literally reshape the South China Sea.

Chinese ships carrying construction materials regularly ply the waters near the disputed Spratly Islands, carrying out work that will see new islands rise from the sea, according to Philippine fishermen and officials in the area. China's efforts are reminiscent of Dubai's Palm resort-style land reclamation, they say.

"They are creating artificial islands that never existed since the creation of the world, like the ones in Dubai," said Eugenio Bito-onon, 58, mayor of a sparsely populated stretch of the Spratlys called Kalayaan, or "freedom" in Filipino. "The construction is massive and nonstop. That would lead to total control of the South China Sea," Bito-onon said May 28, citing fishermen.

Artificial islands could help China anchor its claims and potentially develop bases to control waters that contain some of the world's busiest shipping lanes. China, which says the area falls within its 1940s-era "nine-dash line" map, successfully assumed control of the Scarborough Shoal from the Philippines in 2012 and has pressured Vietnam in the past month with an exploration oil rig in waters claimed by its neighbor.

"China's end game is to have de facto -- if not de jure -- control over adjacent waters, the Western Pacific," said Richard Javad Heydarian, a political science lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University. "The only question is if and how it will achieve it. China might need to consider more coercive measures to do so given the hardening resistance of other claimant states."

9. Eat organic, heal...anything.

Diabetes, cancer, Parkinson's disease, infertility, obesity--there seems to be no end to the ill health effects attributed to the synthetic pesticides used on nonorganic food. And that's just on the adults who eat them. Pesticides have been linked to lower IQs and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children, and there's some suspicion that pesticides on food may play a role in the development of autism. Then there's the planet: Organic farming sequesters more carbon from the atmosphere than chemical farming, and requires fewer greenhouse-gas-emitting petroleum-based fertilizers. So simply by looking for that telltale green-and-white USDA Organic seal, you're doing yourself and the planet a world of good.

8. Beat back a headache with beef liver.

Plagued by migraines? You may be suffering from a liver deficiency. Beef liver is one of the best dietary sources of the B vitamin riboflavin, which has shown some promise in reducing the frequency of migraine headaches. Of course, the effective dose is 400 milligrams of riboflavin per day, far more than you'd get from a serving of liver (about 3 milligrams). So eat your riboflavin-rich beef with other foods high in the vitamin, including dairy products and vegetables, and consider taking a supplement if you're plagued by bad headaches.

7. Eat pomegranates to ward off sunburn.

Pomegranates are a rich source of ellagic acid, which can help protect your skin from UVA- and UVB-induced cell damage, according to research from the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at Texas A&M University. Aim to get the health benefits of pomegranates from whole fruits, which are a more potent form of the skin-protecting acids than juices or supplements.

6. Prevent weight gain with red wine.

As if you needed another reason to enjoy a good glass of red wine! Researchers from Purdue University have found that a compound called piceatannol found in red wine prevents or delays immature fat cells from developing into mature fat cells. Not a drinker? The same compound exists in the seeds and skin of red grapes and blueberries.

5. Ward off colds with yogurt.

Start bolstering your immune system for fall and winter by downing a cup of probiotic-rich yogurt every day. Those good bacteria strengthen your immunity and have been associated with a 42 percent lower risk of getting upper respiratory infections, such as colds. The strains of probiotics are found in fermented dairy products such as yogurt and kefir. And while you're downing those, lay off the excess sugar, antibiotics, and stress, all of which can kill good bacteria in your gut and make you more susceptible to cold-weather ailments.

4. Drink coffee, defeat depression.

Here's a disturbing stat: More than 10 percent of the U.S. population is now on expensive antidepressant medications. But researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health are wondering if a few cups of coffee couldn't render those drugs unnecessary. In a study published last year, they found that women who drank an average of four cups of coffee per day were 20 percent less likely to develop depression than people who didn't drink coffee, or any other caffeinated drinks, for that matter. Caffeine may protect the brain against certain neurotoxins that can cause depression, the authors wrote, or it could be nothing more than the energy lift you get from chronic, low-level exposures to the stimulant. Either way, drink up! And make sure your morning joe is certified organic.

3. Cure kidney stones with lemonade.

Kidney stones have become a more common health complaint than heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, according to figures released this year from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The number of people suffering from them has doubled in the past 13 years. If you fall into that crowd, start downing lemonade. Lemon juice has the highest levels of citrate of any citrus juice, and that citrate helps dissolve any calcium deposits that will eventually turn into kidney stones. Squeeze your own fresh lemons to make lemonade, or buy a commercial mix. Doctors say that you can get as much citrate as you need from regular old lemonade, without having to make your teeth curl by sucking on a raw lemon.

2. Eat asparagus, prevent a hangover.

The leaves and shoots of this super-veggie contain enzymes that break down alcohol after heavy drinking, preventing a hangover, and even eating it the day after can tame one that is already making you miserable, according to Korean scientists. The best way to prevent a hangover, of course, is to avoid overindulging. Munch on some stalks before you head out or during your bar visit, though, and not only will you get the beneficial enzymes but your stomach will be full of food, which slows down your body's absorption of alcohol in the first place. And if you wake up the day after a binge to find you're out of asparagus, reach for one of these 10 Best Hangover Foods instead.

1. Prevent PMS with pork 'n' beans.

Both are rich in thiamine and riboflavin, two B vitamins that could prevent you from developing PMS, according to research from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The study found that women who consumed 1.9 milligrams per day if thiamine and 2.5 milligrams of riboflavin per day had a 25 to 35 percent lower risk of developing PMS than women who consumed less, but they didn't see those same benefits when they took supplements. And pork and beans are your best sources of both vitamins. Eating a 3-ounce serving of the meat and a cup of cooked beans on a regular basis will provide you with the amount you need to keep those cramps away.

Your Other Medicine Cabinet

Way back when Hippocrates was telling his compatriots to "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food," he wasn't just talking about laying off the ancient Greek equivalent of Twinkies. Pretty much every day-to-day health ailment can be cured with a healthy diet. He knew it then, and we know it now--we just prefer to take the easy way out and reach for a pill bottle or make an appointment with an M.D. That gets expensive, not to mention inconvenient, especially when the answer for what ails you--whether it's PMS or a mild case of the blues--is no further than your refrigerator.

Tensions have risen between China and Vietnam since China recently placed a massive oil rig near the disputed Paracel Islands off Vietnam's coast. China has accused Vietnam of sending ships and divers to disrupt its drilling operations, while Vietnam has accused China of threatening its vessels near the rig. "The two sides are testing each others' resolve to see who will blink first," said security analyst Alexander Vuving. "China is in a position to show it has more resolve than Vietnam. This is part of China’s overall strategy of turning the South China Sea into a Chinese lake. Once China can control the South China Sea, it can dominate the maritime areas of the western Pacific."

China has taken its case to the United Nations, accusing Vietnam of illegally disrupting Chinese drilling operations and ramming its ships. The Paracel Islands "are an inherent part of China's territory," said China's complaint to the UN, "over which there is no dispute." Once more, China makes up its own facts as it goes along, claiming as "indisputable" that which is eminently disputable.

Tensions have also risen between China and the Philippines over islands that China claims are an "indisputable" part of Chinese territory. Beijing has accused the Philippines of being "a determined challenger of Chinese national interests and the devoted hatchet man of foreign anti-China forces," the latter a clear reference to Manila's increasingly close relationship with Washington.

Now China is angry about a game of beach volleyball. This will not make it any easier for the rest of us to take China seriously as a world power.
#11978
China's "irrefutable sovereignty" over the Spratly Islands and the rest of the South China Sea is, of course, quite refutable. China claims about 90 percent of the South China Sea based on its unilaterally-declared "nine-dash line," a claim unrecognized by anyone but the Chinese themselves. Never mind â€" China will make up its own version of reality as it goes along, based on China's own preferences without regard to what the rest of the world thinks. China is a master at creating works of pure geopolitical fiction, then convincing itself that that these are "irrefutable" facts. The trouble is, China can't convince anyone else.

Despite their own competing claims on Southwest Cay and other islands, Vietnam and the Philippines put aside their differences in the face of what the two Southeast Asian nations increasingly see as a far greater threat from China. The two have agreed to expand naval cooperation, and Vietnam recently expressed interest in a case for international arbitration filed by the Philippines against China. Both countries have also strengthened ties with the United States, irritating China.

This fits a general pattern of Asia-Pacific nations pulling closer together and into closer cooperation with the United States for fear of Chinese aggression. To China, however, it is its Asia-Pacific neighbors and the United States that are guilty of "picking quarrels and causing trouble." Poor China is only an innocent victim of others' troublemaking.

China has been angry before, but never about volleyball.

Vietnamese and Philippine troops gathered on a disputed island in the South China Sea on Sunday to drink beer and play beach volleyball in a show of unity that has enraged Beijing. The gathering took place on Southwest Cay in the Spratly Islands, disputed between Vietnam, the Philippines and China. This show of unity between Vietnam and the Philippines in the face of growing Chinese aggression produced a quick reaction from Beijing.

"Don't you think this small move together by Vietnam and the Philippines is at most a clumsy farce?" said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying at a daily press briefing on Monday. "China has irrefutable sovereignty over the Spratly Islands and the seas nearby. ... We demand that Vietnam and the Philippines stop any behavior that picks quarrels and causes trouble ... and not do anything to complicate or magnify the dispute."

Other nations that use highway airstrips as part of their strategy include North Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and the former USSR. Here is a clip from the Polish film Na Niebie i Na Ziemii (In the Sky & on the Ground), where Polish Mig-21s use a highway landing strip for operations:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etnLMGurZD8

The key hallmarks of many runway strips are medians that are not grass, but cement, and minimal space between the two traffic directions. The space is typically split by jersey barriers (the Russians probably do not call them that), which can be quickly removed, creating one large landing zone out of the two traffic lanes.

Despite the fact that many stretches of highway in the United States look long enough to land a plane on (and sometimes a plane will land on one in an emergency), it is not part of the U.S. highway plan, but is certainly part of the strategy in other nations.

One of the great urban legends is that one mile in every five of U.S. interstate highways is completely straight. The myth goes that under the Eisenhower Interstate Highway System, these straight stretches of road would be used as improvised airstrips in times of crisis or times of war. This is a definite myth, but it has certainly inspired air forces in other nations to employ the concept.

Air bases are among the most vulnerable targets in war, and depending on how close you are to international rivals, the prospect of losing an air base to a military strike is a very real possibility. As such, an airstrip baked into the design of a highway is a must.

These were first built late in WWII by Nazi Germany. Following the war, they were also built in many places in Europe during the Cold War. These were built in East Germany and West Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland and Czechoslovakia.

At 9:30 a.m., a shootout ensued between Rosales’ group and the police. Killed were Rosales, Amie Camero, Armando Quisto, Glenn Sayson, Junifer Bicada and Carlito Kiamko.

Those who gave up were Roberto Olalo, Paolo Avenido, Orlando Garcia and Joan Cajes.

Recovered in the shootout were four .45-cal. and one 9-mm pistols, two .38-cal. revolvers, one M-16 rifle, one hand grenade and sachets of white crystalline substance believed to be shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride).

Yape claimed that Rosales’ group was responsible for Cana’s killing after the Ubay police chief caught a drug peddler during an operation last week. He said Cana’s death was a big loss to the police campaign against illegal drug trade in the province.

“He is very dedicated to his work … . I even advised him not to go on trips alone because of his work,” Yape said of Cana.

Police found an abandoned Isuzu Trooper SUV (sport utility vehicle), said to be used by Rosales’ group during the ambush in Barangay Nueva Esperansa, also in Bien Unido. Inside the SUV were two .38-cal. pistols and five .357-cal. revolver bullets, drug paraphernalia and women’s clothing.

CEBU CITY, Philippinesâ€"Six men believed to be  behind Saturday’s killing of a municipal police chief in Bohol province died during a shootout with policemen in Bien Unido town, also in Bohol, on Sunday morning.

Four others surrendered, according to a report of the provincial police.

The group was tagged in the killing of Chief Inspector George Cana, police chief of Ubay in Barangay (village) Balintawak, Talibon town, on Saturday night.

One of the fatalities and alleged leader was identified as Owen Rosales, a former police officer who went on Awol (absent without official leave) in 2010.

In a phone interview, Supt. Joie Yape, police provincial spokesperson, said the Bien Unido police had received a tip that Rosales’ group checked in at Playa del Norte resort in Barangay Puerto San Pedro at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

All police stations in the province were earlier alerted to set up checkpoints to intercept the killers, he said. Members of the police provincial intelligence branch, special weapons and action team and Bien Unido police conducted pursuit operations after Cana’s death.
