One Twitter user -- @Tsimchik -- told Sberbank: "Reduce your interest rates and people will have enough money to run a cat farm!"

A Facebook user from Iceland was keen on the concept, but not the cats. "I would take out a second mortgage if the bank gave me a monkey," he said.

The Russian mortgage market has been expanding by more than 30% per year since 2009, according to statistics from the Russian central bank.

Mortgage lending in rubles has grown by 41% in the first seven months of 2014 compared to the same period in 2013.

--CNN's Olga Pavlova in Moscow contributed to this report.

The bank, which serves more than half the Russian population, has been banned from raising medium and long-term financing in Europe. Its shares have plunged by 28% since the start of the year.

Western sanctions against Russia are part of an effort to punish President Vladimir Putin for supporting separatist fighting in eastern Ukraine.

The cat campaign has generated a lot of buzz on social media, but it hasn't all been positive.

A few customers have already signed up, though cat lovers may be disappointed to hear that the kitties will be on loan for just two hours and then whisked away.

Clients can choose from 10 felines with names like Caesar and Caramel. But they'll have to hurry to secure one -- the bank is limiting the cat campaign to 30 new mortgages only.

Sberbank's promotion may be part of an effort to present a warm, fuzzy image since getting slapped with European sanctions one month ago.

Russian bank offers cats with mortgages

By Alanna Petroff
September 1, 2014

LONDON (CNNMoney)- Would you like a cat with that mortgage?

Russia's biggest bank, Sberbank (SBRCY), is offering to deliver cats to the doorsteps of new mortgage clients as part of a quirky promotional campaign.

In Russia, it's considered good fortune if a cat enters a new home ahead of the owners.

In the US, Mike Topp's comic flash fiction contains the sparseness of a Basho meditation, and the observational, gag-heavy humour of Steven Wright. It's flash fiction that feels no real need to advertise the fact:

My Father by Mike Topp: My father was a snowman. He got depressed and blew his brains out with a hair dryer.

This seems to be a running theme with the very best flash fiction authors: few suggest they actually belong to this genre, they merely feel a few words will suffice.

An old adage says that to become a great prose artist, a writer must first master the art of poetry. In these changing times, I think that can be manipulated to say that a great storyteller should be able to tell a tale within a few sentences.

I prefer the various sub-genres of flash fiction, which include microfiction, the 69er (69 words), the Drabble or - my favourite - 55-word fiction. Fifty-five words is a perfectly reasonable word count with which to tell a story. Fewer is even better. Either way, flash fiction places the onus on the reader to provide their own input. A successful flash fiction story is a seed planted in the reader's imagination, which, once there, should grow and flourish.

There are a plethora of great ultra-short stories out there on the internet. Donald Barthelme and Italo Calvino were economical masters, as was Richard Brautigan who could concoct a scenario, a mood and an outcome in 33 words:

The Scarlatti Tilt by Richard Brautigan "It's hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play the violin." That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

Earlier this year, the Guardian ran a selection of flash fiction stories by renowned authors. The results were decidedly varied, proving that some writers can turn their hand to any literary discipline, while others are better at handling 60,000 words than they are the mere six they had to work with here. Few matched the standard of Ernest Hemingway's standard-setting flash work, a story he called his best ever piece of writing:

Untitled by Ernest Hemingway - For sale: baby shoes, never worn.

What the Guardian piece failed to offer, though, was a concrete definition of what flash fiction is. Wikipedia has flash fiction as "less than 2,000 words long", with "most flash-fiction pieces between 250 and 1,000 words long." This seems to stretch things a bit: for some writers 2,000 words can be an epic. For others it is just enough for an opening sentence.

The story as one-liner

The increasing fashion for flash fiction is a great demonstration of how much can be told in a few words.

Ben Myers

"Flash fiction" could only be a relatively modern creation. In the age of channel-hopping, instant messaging and ad breaks designed to jolt you from torpor to spend, spend, spend, flash fiction is a format indicative of these times.

Though its roots run deeper, the popularity of flash fiction seems to have grown exponentially alongside the expansion of the internet and a hunger for instant gratification.

The Antichrist Revealed in the Last Hour

John says he knew it was the last hour because the Antichrist already had come. He did not have President Obama in mind, nor George Bush or any other leader of modern history. John spoke of events then current, saying that the Antichrist was already in the world, (1 John 4:3 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ) had infiltrated the church, then left it, (1 John 2:19 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ).  However, if one chooses not to believe John’s words, then the Antichrist Revealed will always be a mystery that continues to embarrass those who assign people of modern history to events of the past.

Clues in the New Testament

All the historical evidence points to the first century as to the revealing of the Antichrist support this Old Testament prophetic history. John, writing of the Antichrist during the days of Ancient Roman empire says the Antichrist had already come.

“Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.” (1 John 1:18-19 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ). What is John saying? He is saying, here is the Antichrist revealed. Mystery solved. No further need for speculative theories.

Further, this also confirms our point that the Antichrist is a kingdom. Observe how John speaks of the Antichrist. He says the Antichrist had come, then speaks of the antichrist as “they” and “them.” It is not one individual but a corporate entity comprised of several individuals.

The Antichrist Revealed in the Battle Against Christ’s Kingdom

As the chapter progresses, we note that it is during the days of the fourth beast (Rome) that the little horn makes war against the saints. Therefore the setting for his activity is with historical Rome when he fights against the church. As modern futurist commentators recognized this Roman connection, they invented the doctrine of the reestablishment of Rome through the 10 confederate nations forming the European Union. Only that confederacy did not cooperate. Besides being in the wrong time, it continued to grow as a confederacy to include more than ten nations. At last count it was about twenty five countries.

What have we heard about it lately in Bible prophecy? Not much. They don’t talk about it any more because it so obviously doesn’t fit the prophecy. Now, their attention is turned to Iran. Why is this? Because they haven’t got a clue. Again, the mystery of the Antichrist revealed is not in the future but in the past.

This battle between the Antichrist and the saints continues until Christ (the Ancient of Days) comes in the clouds (Dan. 7:13-14 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ; 21-22 [Open in Logos Bible Software (if available)] ) and a judgment is given to the saints of the Most High, i.e. to the kingdom of Christ, or the church.

Historical Context of the Antichrist

To properly understand the timing of the this man of sin, we must look at the historical context which surrounds him. He does not originate in a vacuum of time. Daniel 7 provides ample clues as to his time in history. Futurist expositors have understood this and are forced to create an end times program that focuses on the recreation of the historical setting for the lawless one.

Daniel 7 mentions four Gentile kingdoms of history in this order, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and Rome. The fourth or latter kingdom is the scene, not only for coming of the Antichrist, but also for the coming of Christ. As Daniel considers the four beasts, Rome being that “dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong beast with the huge iron teeth devouring and breaking in pieces everything in its path, his attention is drawn away by the “little horn” who comes up among them.

Now this is a great clue to the identity of the Antichrist.  Daniel considers the horn (which are kingdoms). How many was he considering? Four, the lion (Babylon), the bear (Medo-Persia) the leopard (Greece) and  the 4th great and terrible beast (Rome). Therefore, when he says a little horn came up among them, he indicates that the little horn is a 5th kingdom which existed in the time of and concurrently with not one, but all four kingdoms. Again, this is critical to the mystery of the Antichrist revealed.

The idea that the Antichrist is someone of recent origin, separate and apart from this history in Daniel is what keeps his identity a mystery to both the majority of the religious and secular world. This longstanding horn or kingdom eventually makes war with the kingdom of Christ.

The Antichrist Revealed â€" Who Is It?

Speculation continues to mount on the identity of the Antichrist. The  problem lies not in the identity of the Antichrist, but in the lack of faith to believe what the Scriptures have stated concerning him. The Antichrist Revealed â€" Who Is It? We’ve written before to show very clearly that President Obama is not the Antichrist. For those who do not keep up with the history of assigning the designation of Antichrist to presidents and world leaders, this is not a recent fad.

Mussolini of Italy was called the Antichrist. So was Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein and George Bush to name a few. This is a fad that will not cease any time soon. It is another fruit of futurism. Whenever the endtime is projected into the future, we must look for some evidence in the present to confirm those beliefs. So what does the Bible say about the Antichrist revealed?

Our Verdict

First of all, every person with six letters in each of their names does not qualify as the Antichrist. Mad Magazine associate editor Jerry DiFusco suggested that the E in Alfred E. Newman stands for Enigma. Alfred Enigma Newman. Do the math. Is this the face of the Antichrist?

Well, we certainly think so.

As you'll find with most people on this list, while there may be a few striking coincidences, there is actually a list of twenty-seven characteristics that the Antichrist must possess. While a simple stretching of the truth could make Reagan fit into some of them (you know, he did speak boastfully!), he falls well short on many others. Too many others to even list, in fact. Sorry, paranoid left wingers, Ronnie ain't yer demon. Keep your eye on that Newman fucker though.

The 27 Characteristics of the AntiChrist

1. He comes from among ten kings in the restored Roman Empire; his authority will have similarities to the ancient Babylonians, Persians, and Greeks [Daniel 7:24; Rev 13:2 / Daniel 7:7]

2. He will subdue three kings [Daniel 7:8, 24]

3. He is different from the other kings [Daniel 7:24]

4. He will rise from obscurity...a “little horn” [Daniel 7:8]

5. He will speak boastfully [Daniel 7:8; Revelation 13:5]

María Rosa Luna Henson or "Lola Rosa" ("Grandma Rosa") (1927- 1997) was the first Filipina who made public her story as a comfort woman (forced sexual worker) for the Imperial Japanese Army during the Second World War.

Her story

In 1992, when Henson was 65, she decided it was time to tell the world about her experience during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines during the war. Until 1992, only two people had known of her secret: her late mother and her dead husband. After coming out publicly with her story, Lola Rosa decided to write about her war-time experience in the book, Comfort Woman: A Slave of Destiny.

In Comfort Woman: A Slave of Destiny, Lola Rosa provided an achingly straightforward voice to the erstwhile silent and invisible existence of Filipino comfort women. Almost 200 Filipino women soon followed Rosa’s example as they decided to reveal themselves and their personal stories for the first timeâ€"not only to the world, but to their families as well. Other victims, including those from Korea and China, joined the Filipino women to file a class action lawsuit against the Japanese government. Together, they demanded justice in the form of a formal apology from the Japanese government; the inclusion of all the war-time atrocities committed by the Japanese into Japan’s school history books; and monetary reparations to compensate for all the abuses and violence committed against the women.

However, the Japanese government denied legal responsibility and refused to pay the victims. Later, responding to the growing pressure of continued protests and appeals by the survivors and their supporters, Japan finally set up the Asian Women’s Fund (AWF) in 1995 to collect money from private Japanese citizens, and offered them to the victims as “atonement payments.” Henson died of a heart attack in 1997, a year after her autobiography was published, and after she decided to accept the money from the AWF. Below, the complete police report:

On August 11, 2014, at approximately 11:55 am, Marin County Communications received a 9-1-1 telephone call reporting a male adult had been located unconscious and not breathing inside his residence in unincorporated Tiburon, CA. The Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Tiburon Fire Department and Southern Marin Fire Protection District were dispatched to the incident with emergency personnel arriving on scene at 12:00 pm. The male subject, pronounced deceased at 12:02 pm has been identified as Robin McLaurin Williams, a 63 year old resident of unincorporated Tiburon, CA.

An investigation into the cause, manner, and circumstances of the death is currently underway by the Investigations and Coroner Divisions of the Sheriff’s Office. Preliminary information developed during the investigation indicates Mr. Williams was last seen alive at his residence, where he resides with his wife, at approximately 10:00 pm on August 10, 2014. Mr. Williams was located this morning shortly before the 9-1-1 call was placed to Marin County Communications. At this time, the Sheriff’s Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made. A forensic examination is currently scheduled for August 12, 2014 with subsequent toxicology testing to be conducted.

The actor, known for roles in Good Will Hunting, Aladdin, Jumanji, Dead Poets Society, and many, many more, was found in his California residence. Officials are still investigating the death, but have cited "asphyxia" as the apparent cause of death.

Fans have flocked to the actor's Instagram to mourn. He had last tweeted a message to his daughter, Zelda Rae Williams, on her 25th birthday, July 31.

Williams had publicly battled with depression and addiction. The Mork & Mindy star returned to television last year in The Crazy Ones, but the show was cancelled after its first season. He reentered rehab last month "to fine-tune and focus on his continued commitment, of which he remains extremely proud."

President Obama has released a statement saying, "He ended up touching every element of the human spirit."

Robin Williams Found Dead of Apparent Suicide

Emily Anne Epstein

Academy Award-winning actor Robin Williams was found dead Monday morning just before noon. He was 63.

His wife, Susan Schneider, released a statement through his publicist. "This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken," she said.

"On behalf of Robin's family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief," the message continued. "As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin's death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions."
