Health and Food / Tilapia is Worse For You Than Bacon

Tilapia is Worse For You Than Bacon

The true chicken-of-the-sea, tilapia is a mild-tasting white fish that’s cheap to breed and easy to sell. In fact, for the first time in 2012, farmed fish production topped that of beef, reaching a record 66 million tons, compared with beef at 63 million. But there’s a dirty secret about tilapia, the lean-meat alternative that beckons you in the supermarketâ€"promises of muscle tone, a healthy heart and beautiful skin ringing in your ears. While most health experts agree we should be eating more fish (for all the reasons listed above), research has found the inflammatory potential of farmed tilapia to be greater than a burger, doughnutsâ€"even pork bacon! It gets worse …

“He (the pope) is worried,” Varquez said in Waray in his homily during a special mass held at the bishop’s residence, which currently caters to 132 families or 722 individuals.

Varquez officiated the mass on the fourth-floor of the four-storey building as evacuees sat on mats and mattresses, hours before the expected landfall of typhoon.

In his homily, Varquez appealed to everyone to be “thoughtful” of other people during trying times.  He also appealed to business owners not to take advantage of the disaster to justify the increase in prices of basic commodities.

Ruby is expected to hit Borongan, Eastern Samar on Sunday morning.

BORONGAN, Eastern Samar â€" Pope Francis is worried about the Philippines, the country he is scheduled to visit next month, as it faces a strong typhoon.

Borongan Bishop Crispin Varquez said Pope Francis has heard about the typhoon “Ruby” and the fact that the province of Eastern Visayas is again in a storm’s path.

A vigil at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican is also being held by the bishops as they worry about the fate of Eastern Samar, he added.

The Oratio Imperata for Deliverance from Calamities is as follows:

Almighty Father, we raise our hearts to you in gratitude for the wonders of creation, for your providence in sustaining us in our needs and for your wisdom that guides the course of the universe.

We acknowledge our sins against you and the rest of creation.

We have not been good stewards of your creation.

We turn to you, our loving Father and beg forgiveness for our sins.

We pray to you for protection from calamities, from the floods and raging waters brought by storms, from howling winds that destroy our homes, from the loosening of earth that brings landslides.

Calm the storm and keep us all safe and far from harm these perilous days and always.

We ask this through Your Son Jesus Christ who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit now and forever. Amen.

“Let our preparations include prayer. Let us humble ourselves and seek the mercy and compassion of God at this time of impending peril and destruction,” Tagle said.

He added, “Along with our prayer for mercy and deliverance to God our Father, let us fill our hearts with compassion for those who are hungry, homeless, isolated by floods, threatened by strong winds and landslides. Let us pray that they may find food, shelter, and safety.”

The head of the Archdiocese of Manila said that people should not panic; “instead let us focus on being prepared and on being of help. Let us heed all typhoon warnings and all advisories from the government agencies that monitor this type of situations.”

Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle urged the faithful to pray the “Oratio Imperata for Deliverance from Calamaties” in connection with the  impending landfall of typhoon Ruby in Central Philippines on Saturday.

“Let us pray this “Oratio Imperata for Deliverance from Calamaties” in our churches beginning tonight (December 5, 2014) until it is lifted,” he said in a statement.

With this, he asked the people to pray for those that will be affected.

In the Philippines, the release of such prayers is often requested during the monsoon season, and their issuance by high-ranking prelates, such as the Archbishop of Manila and the Archbishop of Cebu, is primarily reported in various national media outlets.

Within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in June 2008, a special prayer for the request of more priestly vocations merited the request for the prayers, recited post-communion during Sunday Masses in the San Fernando Valley but was prohibited in being prayed during weekly masses. (wikipedia)

Difficulty of approval

At times, the approval to recite the prayers on a diocesan level have been known to be difficult to obtain, usually causing the faithful to rather demand in large numbers to an Archdiocese to release an Oratio Imperata. The most commonly authorised prayer is Oratio Imperata Ad Fluviam Petendam, in hopes of asking for rain in times of severe drought. Another one is Oratio Imperata Ad Calamitam et Bellonam, for casualties of war. (wikipedia)

In very rare cases of enduring public calamities lasting a longer time, (i,e. national war, calamitous plague, etc), the local ordinary may indeed impose a suitable Oratio Imperata for an extended period:

-May only be recited during Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

-Is prohibited on the same days twice, or in the same days coinciding with relevant liturgical days. (wikipedia)

Bible Study / Re: What is Oratio Imperata?

The invocative prayers prescribed as Oratio Imperata are:

-Must only be composed of one, singular prayer

-Must be primarily addressed to a personage of the Holy Trinity, not directly to any interceding angel, saint, or a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary

-Must be prayed and recited by all Catholic priests celebrating Holy Mass in their respective churches and oratories, as well as exempted ones of the diocese

-Can never said under a single conclusion with the collect of the Mass, but after the Mass is concluded

-Is prohibited on all first and second classes of liturgical days, in votive Masses of the 1st and 2nd class, in sung Masses, and when the all have been met on that particular day

An oratio imperata for the deceased is said only on Ferias of the Fourth Class and in low votive or Requiem Masses of the Class IV. (wikipedia)

Bible Study / Re: What is Oratio Imperata?

Common reasons for the religious invocation of the prayer are natural calamities such as storms, snow and drought while rare circumstances which merit the prayer are wars, plague and the disruption of public peace in society. The prayers are customarily invoked by an archdiocese on behalf of overwhelming popular requests, and is authorised by a high-ranking prelate or Metropolitan Archbishop. (wikipedia)

We want to bring in a lot more supplies to cut down on panic buying," Aquino said at the disaster management meeting.

The move followed reports of stores shutting days ahead of the typhoon in order to raise prices of goods later.

"Many stores have closed in Tacloban," said Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla, referring to the capital of Leyte province in the central Philippines, where he hails from. "I think everybody is panicking at this point."

In Luzon, PAGASA said the Cagayan Valley, Cordillera and Ilocos regions will be cloudy with light rains.

“Metro Manila and the rest of the country will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rain showers and thunderstorms,” the weather bureau said.

"Let's prepare for everything," President Benigno Aquino III told the public Thursday during a nationally televised meeting of disaster agency chiefs, after hearing warnings of giant storm surges and house-destroying winds.

Although the current track forecast is slightly north of the one taken by super typhoon “Yolanda” in November last year, residents of areas devastated by the most powerful storm ever recorded on land fearfully prepared for Hagupit, with many evacuating from their homes before the weather turned bad.

Local governments have suspended classes and work in several areas in and around Hagupit’s path.

The government said it was considering declaring a state of national calamity to freeze prices of basic goods and Aquino ordered the trade department to send more food supplies to provinces at risk from the storm.

Roxas cautioned against underestimating Hagupit's strength, which he said is "close" to the 240-300 kph of last year's super typhoon "Yolanda," and urged people to be "serious" in their preparations and heed orders to evacuate to safer ground.

Currently, 34 have been placed under Public Storm Warning Signals 1 and 2.

Roxas said the latest projections forecast Hagupit making landfall over the northern part of Samar Island Saturday evening and then cutting through Eastern Visayas and other central Philippine regions.

PAGASA said areas within the 700-km diameter of Hagupit can expect heavy to intense rains of 7.5-20 mm per hour.

Projected track of typhoon 'Hagupit' (Ruby) from PAGASA

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 3 - 11:30 a.m.) “Hagupit” (local name: “Ruby”) has been officially declared a "super typhoon" after it slowed down slightly early Friday morning but gained more strength as it continued to move west-northwest towards Eastern Visayas.

Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II, at a briefing at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Friday morning, said Hagupit had become a "super typhoon" and areas directly in its path, or within a 30-kilometer radius of its central line, are likely to be placed under Public Storm Warning Signal No. 4, the highest level, once the storm makes landfall.

While welcoming the improvements, the scientist said he had decided not to change his robotic-sounding voice, which originally came from a speech synthesiser designed for a telephone directory service.

"That voice was very clear although slightly robotic. It has become my trademark and I wouldn't change it for a more natural voice with a British accent," he told the BBC.

"I'm told that children who need a computer voice want one like mine."

He said the Internet had brought dangers as well as benefits, citing a warning from the new head of Britain's electronic spying agency GCHQ that it had become a command centre for criminals and terrorists.

"More must be done by the Internet companies to counter the threat, but the difficulty is to do this without sacrificing freedom and privacy," Hawking, 72, said.

Hawking Tuesday demonstrated a new software system developed by Intel, which incorporates predictive text to allow him to write faster. It will be made available online in January to help those with motor neurone disease.

"Once humans develop artificial intelligence it would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate.

"Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete and would be superseded," said Hawking, who is regarded as one of the world's most brilliant living scientists.

Hawking, who is wheelchair-bound as a result of motor neurone disease and speaks with the aid of a voice synthesiser, is however keen to take advantage of modern communications technology and said he was one of the first people to be connected in the early days of the Internet.

British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking has warned that development of artificial intelligence could mean the end of humanity.

In an interview with the BBC, the scientist said such technology could rapidly evolve and overtake mankind, a scenario like that envisaged in the "Terminator" movies.

"The primitive forms of artificial intelligence we already have, have proved very useful. But I think the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race," the professor said in an interview aired Tuesday.

Health and Food / Re: Benefits of Intermittent Fasting
November 29, 2014, 06:28:19 AM
Panda said that it may be challenging for people to fast intermittently, instead of eating three meals every day. Eating breakfast is often promoted as a weight-control aid, but recent evidence has suggested it might not be, the researchers said.

Future research needs to further explore the benefits and drawbacks of different types of intermittent fasting in a variety of populations. "Its effectiveness in both preventing and reversing diseases, as well as interaction with standard medications for chronic metabolic diseases, should be tested in appropriate volunteer groups," Panda said.

"Intermittent fasting helps the body to rejuvenate and repair, thereby promoting overall health," Panda told Live Science.

In addition, the body may respond better to meals eaten at some times of the day rather than others because of the body's circadian rhythms. In the years before artificial light, people depended on natural patterns of day and night, with food primarily eaten during the day and fasting occurring at night. This means that eating at certain times of the day may be healthier for the body's metabolism â€" for example, in 2013, two studies in humans suggested that eating meals earlier in the day improved weight loss in overweight and obese people.

Such intermittent fasting could consist of eating 500 calories or less either two days each week, or every other day, or not eating breakfast and lunch several days each week, the researchers said.

Prior research suggests that in animals, intermittent fasting can fend off or even reverse such illnesses as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and neurodegenerative disorders. Animal studies suggest that intermittent fasting provides these benefits by allowing the body to respond better to stress that might otherwise damage it. For example, fasting could starve tumors, reduce inflammation, or improve the removal of damaged molecules and other components of cells, the researchers said.

"Fasting alone is more powerful in preventing and reversing some diseases than drugs," said Satchidananda Panda, an associate professor of regulatory biology at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, California, and one of the co-authors of the article.

Ancient hunter-gatherers often ate only intermittently, the researchers noted in their article. This suggests that the ability to function at a high level both physically and mentally during extended periods without food may have been crucial in human evolution, and that the human body may have adapted to perform at its best with intermittent fasting.

The advice given on fighting obesity usually focuses on consuming fewer calories and exercising more. The benefits of such foods as vegetables, fruits, nuts, fiber and fish, and the value of reducing or eliminating snacks are often also touted.

However, mounting evidence reveals that other key aspects of diet â€" when and how often people eat â€" can also play a major role in health. In fact, the most common eating pattern in modern societies of three meals daily, plus snacks, is abnormal from the perspective of human evolution, an international group of researchers wrote in an article published online Nov. 17 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

More and more research shows that intermittent fasting could have benefits, they said.

Does Intermittent Fasting Have Benefits? Science Suggests Yes

Instead of eating three square meals a day, an eating schedule that involves "intermittent fasting" could help fight not just obesity but many related diseases of modern life, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's, researchers say.

Modern dolls often yield an odd number of figures but this is not an absolute rule; the original Zvyozdochkin set, for instance, had an even number. The form is approximately cylindrical, with a rounded top for the head, tapering toward the bottom, with few or no protruding features; the dolls have no hands (except those that are painted). Traditionally the outer layer is a woman, dressed in a sarafan. The figures inside may be of either gender; the smallest, innermost doll is typically a baby lathed from a single small piece of wood (and hence non-opening). The artistry is in the painting of each doll, which can be extremely elaborate.

The word "matryoshka" (маÑ,Ñ€Ñ'шка), literally "little matron", is a diminutive form of the Russian female first name "Matryona" (МаÑ,Ñ€Ñ'на). (wikipedia)

Design

A set of matryoshkas consist of a wooden figure which separates, top from bottom, to reveal a smaller figure of the same sort inside, which has, in turn, another figure inside of it, and so on. The number of nested figures is traditionally not less than five, but can be much more, up to several dozen with sufficiently fine craftsmanship. (wikipedia)

these dolls of russian leaders actually end up as one, i.e., the smaller one is placed inside the next bigger one, and so on.

A matryoshka doll, also known as Russian nesting doll or babushka doll, refers to a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. (wikipedia)

The problem is, it’s really not about Benedict; it’s about his followers. Their passion is likely to outlast the ex-pope himself.

so there it is.  this last paragraph of the article negates all conspiracy theories.

Cats for World Peace

November 20, 2014
by Just Curious Coco

While at my yoga class the other day, I had a rather Zen moment.

It appears as though our Prime Minister didn’t make any new friends at the G20 last week, and who knows what the UN is doing these days. So, as I surveyed the meditation room, I thought, why not form a Cats for World Peace working group?
