A teenager was critically wounded after he accidentally shot himself with a gun while trying to take a selfie.

Fifteen-year-old Vince (not his real name) was trying to take a selfie last June 18, with one hand holding a gun pointed at his chin and the other holding a phone. It was learned Vince borrowed the gun from his uncle.

Instead of pressing the camera button, Vince pulled the trigger of the 9mm gun he was holding and shot himself.

The bullet hit Vince on the nose and pierced through his head. He was rushed to the hospital where he spent a month in the intensive care unit.

Vince was discharged on July 17.

The family said they thought Vince was already on the mend but noticed that the teenager was talking to himself while staring blankly.

He also complained of headaches, prompting the family to take him back to the hospital.

He is now confined at the ICU of Batangas Medical Center in Batangas City.

The family admitted they had yet to pay the P200,000 balance during Vince's previous confinement.

Vince's mother, a domestic helper from Oman, has also returned to the country after the incident.

The family is now seeking help to pay their mounting debts. â€"report by Ernie Manio, ABS-CBN News Batangas

South Korean comfort women at a 2011 rally.
#11222
Now, the meeting between Pope Francis and a group of comfort women is being taken by many as a move legitimizing their plight. Japan’s Kyodo News agency, reporting on the meeting, said that the pope’s action “is likely to influence international opinion on the issue.”

While the presence of “comfort women” calls to mind unresolved historical tensions between South Korea and Japan, the pope’s final mass in South Korea was dedicated to the issue of Korean reconciliation. Associated Press quoted Pope Francis as calling for all Koreans to overcome the “mindset shaped by suspicion, confrontation and competition” between their two countries in order to make peace. The pope prayed “for an ever greater recognition that all Koreans are brothers and sisters, members of one family, one people.” The mass was reportedly attended by defectors from North Korea.
#11223
The plight of the comfort women is symbolic of unresolved issues left over from World War II and the Japanese occupation of the Korean Peninsula. South Korea’s government has demanded that Japan apologize for the harm done to these women, as well as paying them compensation. Japan maintains that South Korea forswore the right to demand compensation when it reestablished diplomatic relations with Tokyo in 1965. Further, Japan points to money offered to the comfort women from private contributors, but Seoul believes this unofficial compensation is not enough.

Occasionally, Japanese officials make comments denying or downplaying the existence of comfort women. Earlier this year, the chairman of NHK, Japan’s national public broadcaster, outraged Koreans by saying that the use of comfort women “was a fact of those times” and should not be judged by modern moral standards. Predictably, these comments were roundly denounced in South Korea.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe himself has gone on record as saying he is “deeply pained to think of the comfort women who experienced immeasurable pain and suffering.” Abe also said he had no intention of revoking the 1993 Kono Statement, wherein then-Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono expressed Japan’s “sincere apologies and remorse” for the harm done to comfort women. However, Abe undid whatever goodwill he won with that promise through the puzzling decision to authorize a government review of the origins of the Kono Statement â€" a review that many Koreans felt was designed to undermine the official apology and cast doubt on Japan’s culpability.

On his last day in South Korea, Pope Francis met with a number of “comfort women,” women forced into sexual slavery by the Japanese army during World War II. The pope met the seven women at the Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul, prior to a mass calling for peace and reconciliation between North and South Korea. One of the women gave the pope a butterfly pin, which is used to symbolize the comfort women’s plight. Pope Francis wore the pin throughout the ensuing mass. The mass was also attended by South Korean President Park Geun-hye.

The Yonhap News Agency reported in early July that a number of comfort women, many of whom are Catholic, would be at the August 18 mass. At that time, however, it was unclear if Pope Francis would meet with them personally, or if they would simply be part of the congregation. The pope apparently agreed to a personal interaction with the women. Yonhap said that the South Korean committee in charge of preparing for the pope’s visit had informed his office that the comfort women had been invited. Presumably, the pope was also made aware of the women’s significance in on-going tensions between Japan and South Korea.

Story of ‘neglected’ dad in PH, US-based daughters stirs debate online
INQUIRER.net2:04 pm | Sunday, August 17th, 2014

MANILA, Philippines â€" Would you abandon your father who could not part with his philandering ways or love him unconditionally despite his shortcomings?

That is the dilemma faced by the family of Napoleon Timonera, 73, who was found wandering the streets and asking for help from his four daughters working in the United States.

A video interview with Timonera circulated online, drawing sympathy from many netizens.

However, one of his daughters turned the tables on him after she revealed what they had allegedly gone through because of him.

Pinoy Online Radio, an online station catering to overseas Filipino workers (OFW), posted on its Facebook page the response of Dr. Mic Ng, one of Timonera’s daughters.

“Read the story behind this picture,” the post said. Below it was a picture of Timonera holding a sign that said, “Matanda na ako. Bigyan n’yo ako ng maka-in sa hirap ko sa Saudi mapag-aral kayo (I am already old. Give me food, especially since I worked hard in Saudi to support your studies).”

He then listed the names of his four daughters, two of whom were doctors and the other two nurses, and included pictures of them.

According to his daughter, however, Timonera had been in contact with them even after he left them to live with his mistresses. Ng said the old man is now living with his fourth mistress.

“Sad to know that there are really many people that would rather judge first before knowing the real story. They would rather hurt people rather than know the truth first,” Ng said.

She said they have always supported him financially and even offered him a place to stay.

“Why then is he doing this to us? Because he has another family to support and he is old already. He has seen that in spite of the broken home he has given us, we have strove to rise above the problems and get a better life while the path that he has chosen has lead him to nowhere,” she said.

The doctor pointed out that it was her husband who actually paid for her studies.

She said that even if they give him money, he would just spend it and go back to blackmailing them again.

“I’m content that our friends and relatives know who we are and the real story and they have been supporting us through all these trying times. Those who are bashing us, take time to think. Not all that you are seeing is the truth,” Ng said.

The post has since been “liked” by more than 50,000 Facebook users and shared over 40,000 times.

It has also made the rounds in blogs and websites.

While many people immediately shifted to the side of the daughters, others questioned their lack of empathy for the old man. Nevertheless, a number also said that Timonera should ask for forgiveness from his family.

100-page decision

The promulgation was scheduled at 3 p.m. but Judge Peras came out of his chambers at 5:17 p.m.  “I’m sorry our computer is not of standard, so we have to wait for a long time to finish the printing,” he told the courtroom, referring to his 100-page decision.

In his decision, Judge Peras described as weak Ecleo’s defense and alibi that he was at the PBMA chapter in Talisay at the time that Alona was killed.  Ecleo also claimed that the body found in Dalaguete was not Alona who, he said, didn’t come home after she went out with her friends.

But Judge Peras noted that Ecleo did not make any effort to look for his wife nor did he report her missing when she failed to come home.

Instead, he went to Lapu-Lapu City and later to Bogo City where he had a sing-along session with his friends.  Peras said that after he arrived from Bogo, the accused went to the police homicide section but only because the police had invited him after Alona’s siblings had reported her missing.

Peras pointed out that the accused claimed his organization had millions of members nationwide and had 20,000 members in Cebu aloneâ€"enough manpower to help him look for his wife.  “One word from him would galvanize his members into action to look for Alona Bacolod,” the court said.

Self-sacrifice

But for PBMA member Virgie Novicio, the court decision only reaffirmed their master’s mission: to sacrifice himself so their organization would be known worldwide.

“Our organization would not have been known if this (killing) didn’t happen,” she said.

The promulgation capped a 10-year trial that was marked by the inhibition of six judges handling the case. Judge Peras was the seventh judge to handle the Ecleo parricide case.

Security was tight at the Palace of Justice and only a limited number of people were allowed inside the courtroom.  Even the camps of Ecleo and Bacolod were allowed only 20 representatives each.

More than 50 policemen roved around the Palace of Justice building at the Capitol compound in Cebu City since 6 a.m. on Friday, while PBMA members clad in white shirts were seen gathering outside the courtroom, apparently to lend moral support to their “supreme master.” They could be recognized by the PBMA ring on their finger.

Guilty of graft

Ecleo was represented by his lawyer Orlando Salatandre who said he didn’t know where his client was as they only communicated by phone.  Ecleo was detained at the Cebu City jail but released on a P1-million bail in March 2004, after the court allowed him to seek medical treatment for his heart ailment. His cardiologist had described him as a “walking time bomb” who could drop dead anytime due to probable cardiac complications.

Ecleo also faces a 31-year jail term after the Sandiganbayan found him guilty of three counts of graft during his stint as mayor of San Jose, Dinagat Island, for overpaying for the construction of two municipal buildings and for spending public funds for a women’s center owned by his group, the PBMA.

Salatandre said they would appeal the verdict before a higher court because there were issues raised by the defense that were not appreciated by the court. One of them was the question of identification. The defense contended that the woman found dead in Dalaguete was not Alona.

Alona’s family members, who were all in black, cried after the verdict was handed down. “Finally, my sister can rest in peace,” said Alona’s younger brother Josebil, one of the prosecution witnesses.

Josebil had testified that he heard his sister scream on the night that she was killed, and that he later saw Ecleo’s bodyguards carrying a garbage bag that they placed inside a vehicle.

CEBU CITYâ€"Ten years after his wife’s body was found inside a black garbage bag dumped in a ravine, Rep. Ruben Ecleo Jr. of Dinagat Island was found guilty of parricide and sentenced to reclusion perpetua, or at least 30 years’ imprisonment.

Ecleo, who was not present during the reading of the verdict, was found guilty of killing his wife Alona Bacolod-Ecleo inside their home in Cebu City in 2002.  Aside from a life sentence, the “supreme master” of the cult group Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association (PBMA) was also ordered to pay the heirs of his wife P25 million in compensatory damages, to represent what Alona would have earned had she been able to finish and practice medicine.

Alona, a fourth year medical student, was strangled by Ecleo inside their home at Sitio Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City on Jan. 5, 2002. Her body was found three days later inside a black garbage bag dumped in a ravine in Dalaguete town, southern Cebu.

Aside from the compensatory damages, Judge Soliver Peras of Regional Trial Court Branch 10 also told Ecleo to pay Alona’s family P200,000 in moral damages, P200,000 in exemplary damages, P200,000 in attorney’s fees and P50,000 temperate damages.

- /EIM) (BANAT NEWS)

Some reports suggested the robbers were carrying handguns, others that they were armed with Kalashnikovs, but detectives said no shots were fired and no one in the convoy was hurt. Two â,¬500 notes, documents in Arabic and some medical drugs were said to have been found near the wreckage.

Rocco Contento, of the SGP police union, said the documents came from the Saudi embassy in Paris. "It was clearly an ambush by a commando group that was well-informed, particularly of the time the vehicles would be passing," he told French television.

Romain Nadal, spokesperson for the French foreign ministry, called the attack unacceptable. Police have not named the Saudi prince involved, and the Saudi embassy has declined to comment.

Nicolas Comte, secretary general of the main police union, Unité-SGP, described the attack as strange and unusual. He told AFP: "We have to establish whether it was the money or documents that were targeted. We also have to hope that the Saudi authorities will cooperate with the investigation."

One detective added: "If they were seeking sensitive information, the nature of the robbery changes. We're no longer faced with organised bandits, but something more complicated."

He said the first elements of the inquiry suggested the robbers were "quite expert … and aware of what they would find by attacking this one vehicle [the Mercedes] and not the others".

The George V hotel from which the convoy departed is owned by Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz al Saud, a nephew of King Abdullah. It is not known whether he was in the convoy.

He was listed as among the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2008. He is founder and 95% owner of Kingdom Holding Company, which has investments in banking, financial services and hotels, media, aviation and property.

He is also Citigroup's largest individual shareholder and the second largest voting shareholder in News Corporation. Last year he was listed as the 26th richest man in the world by Forbes magazine, with an estimated $26bn fortune.

Saudi prince's motorcade held up at gunpoint in Paris
French detectives investigating whether gunmen wanted money or sensitive diplomatic documents

French detectives are investigating whether a group of heavily armed gunmen who attacked a convoy of vehicles carrying a Saudi prince and his entourage in the north of Paris wanted money or important diplomatic documents.

The attackers, who police said were clearly well informed, struck on Sunday evening after the motorcade of a dozen vehicles left the luxurious George V hotel on the Champs Elysées and headed to Le Bourget airport, nine miles (15km) north of the French capital.

As the convoy arrived at Porte de la Chapelle, which leads to the péripherique ring road, the attackers â€" who were travelling in two BMWs without number plates â€" forced the Saudis' cars to stop, and went straight to one of the vehicles, a Mercedes people carrier.

The robbers, said to number between five and eight, seized the Mercedes and its three occupants â€" as well as â,¬250,000 and what Le Parisien newspaper described as sensitive documents.

Soon afterwards the robbers released the hostages and abandoned the vehicle, which was found an hour later in Saint-Mesmes, a village in the Ile-de-France region north-east of Paris, along with one of the BMWs. Both vehicles were burnt out.

Washington, Aug 17 (ANI): A new study has demonstrated that middle-aged women who look for extra-marital affairs are more inclined to have sex and don't want to divorce their husbands.

The study showed that 67 percent of women were seeking affairs because they wanted more romantic passion, which always included sex.

Eric Anderson, a professor of masculinity, sexuality, and sport at the University of Winchester in England, said that being happy in marriage was far different than being happy in bed.

Anderson asserted that women were adamant that they were not looking for a new husband and several women even stated their overt love for their husbands, painting them in a positive light.

He continued saying that their results reflected not martial disharmony, but the sexual monotony that was a social fact of the nature of long-term monogamous relationships. The most predictable thing about a relationship was that, the longer it progressed, the quality and the frequency of sex between the couple will faded and this was because they got used to and bored of the same body.

Anderson said this distinction between men and women seeking affairs may be in part due to the "stud/slut dichotomy" that was so prominent in their society, which could reward men for having multiple sex partners but stigmatizes women.

Anderson added that it was very clear that their model of having sex and love with just one other person for life had failed and it had failed massively. (ANI)

“Gibuwagan ko niya without any certain reason and that hurts me the most, specially seeing her with other guys dancing, laughing and having fun with,” matod niya.

“Gibuwagan ko niya for no reason and I just found out nga naa diay siyay laing guy,” nagkanayon si Antigua sa iyang post.

Said Goss: “Elephants and humans have a difficult time coexisting, particularly in agricultural areas, as the crops are irresistible for the giants. They can become dangerous to the communities, as well as risk being killed themselves in retaliation.

“In extreme cases the KWS will move particular animals to remote areas, out of trouble, saving the life of the elephant as well as saving local farmers huge losses.”

“If he stayed he could have either killed himself or injured another farmer trying to protect his crops.”

Wardens with the Kenya Wildlife Service carried out the relocation effort, while the South African-born Goss stood on the sidelines with his camera.

The KWS moves about 200 elephants a year in an attempt to keep the animals, and humans, safe.

The massive pachyderm was transported 195 miles from Amboseli National Park to Tsavo National Park. Its trunk had to be held by wardens to keep it from dragging, as the animal was lifted via crane onto the transport vehicle.

Goss, 29, told Caters News Agency: “It was extraordinary to see something like this as it doesn’t happen often around Amboseli. This male had done an extraordinary amount of damage to people’s crops by eating them. He had also injured a man trying to chase him out of a farm.

Moving a 7-ton elephant from one location to another, after the animal has been sedated, requires tremendous careâ€"and also a heavy-duty crane.

The incredible images that accompany this post were captured by Jeremy Goss, a conservationist who witnessed a relocation effort that was launched after the bull elephant had run amok in Kenya farmland, damaging crops and injuring a man.

Francis' frugality and humble demeanor have received wide coverage in South Korea, a fiercely competitive country that celebrates ostentations displays of status and wealth. This national trait can be seen in a boom in such industries as private tutoring and plastic surgery.

The images of the smiling pope in his little car struck a chord online, with many playing on the car's name. One South Korean user tweeted: "The pope rode the Soul because he is full of soul."

For the man called "The People's Pope" the choice makes sense. He has eschewed the bullet proof "popemobiles" that his predecessors used on foreign trips and urged priests around the world to travel in low-key cars.

Inside the Vatican City, the pope prefers a blue Ford Focus, or when he's out in St. Peter's Square, a white open-topped vehicle that allows him to literally reach out and touch the masses.

South Korean media widely reported that the pope requested the smallest South Korean car during his visit. The Soul is Kia's second-smallest model and reportedly provides more leg room than other compact cars.

Though not everyone loves the Soul's funky design, it appeals to a niche of young, practical drivers. It has never, however, been a car of the rich and powerful.

Already bubbling with excitement for the first papal visit in 25 years, South Koreans appeared fascinated by the humble papal car.

"I feel honored that Pope Francis will not be in a bulletproof vehicle," said Shon Cho-eun, a 22-year-old Christian student. "I hope he arrives safely and delivers good messages to us."

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) â€" Pope Francis' choice of wheels during his five-day South Korean visit has surprised many in this painfully self-conscious country, where big-shots rarely hit the streets in anything but expensive luxury cars.

After his arrival Thursday, the pope left the airport in a compact black Kia that many South Koreans would consider too humble a conveyance for a globally powerful figure.

In a live television broadcast, the pope climbed into the backseat of the boxy Kia Soul, rolled down the window and waved. Surrounded by a few bigger black sedans, the pope's compact car headed toward Seoul.

Moreover, Dr. Berger stated that the arguments put forward by those advocating for special rights for gender confused people have no scientific value and are subjective and emotional appeals with no objective scientific basis.

"I have read the brief put forward by those advocating special rights, and I find nothing of scientific value in it," Dr. Berger said in his statement. "Words and phrases, such as 'the inner space,' are used that have no objective scientific basis."

"These are the scientific facts," Dr. Berger said. "There seems to me to be no medical or scientific reason to grant any special rights or considerations to people who are unhappy with the sex they were born into, or to people who wish to dress in the clothes of the opposite sex."

"The so-called ‘confusion’ about their sexuality that a teenager or adult has is purely psychological. As a psychiatrist, I see no reason for people who identify themselves in these ways to have any rights or privileges different from everyone else in Canada," he concluded.

He explained that cosmetic surgery will not change the chromosomes of a human being in that it will not make a man become a woman, capable of menstruating, ovulating, and having children, nor will it make a woman into a man, capable of generating sperm that can unite with an egg or ovum from a woman and fertilize that egg to produce a human child.

#11295
"From a scientific perspective, let me clarify what ‘transgendered’ actually means," Dr. Berger said, adding, "I am speaking now about the scientific perspective â€" and not any political lobbying position that may be proposed by any group, medical or non-medical."

"‘Transgendered’ are people who claim that they really are or wish to be people of the sex opposite to which they were born, or to which their chromosomal configuration attests," Dr. Berger stated.

"Some times, some of these people have claimed that they are ‘a woman trapped in a man’s body’ or alternatively ‘a man trapped in a woman’s body’."

"The medical treatment of delusions, psychosis or emotional happiness is not surgery," Dr. Berger stated.

"On the other hand," Dr. Berger continued, "if these people are asked to clarify exactly what they believe, that is to say do they truly believe whichever of those above propositions applies to them and they say ‘no’, then they know that such a proposition is not true, but that they ‘feel’ it, then what we are talking about scientifically, is just unhappiness, and that unhappiness is being accompanied by a wish â€" that leads some people into taking hormones that predominate in the other sex, and even having cosmetic surgery designed to make them ‘appear’ as if they are a person of the opposite sex."

Psychiatry expert: ‘scientifically there is no such thing as transgender’
Thaddeus Baklinski
Tue Jan 15, 2013 - 7:02 pm EST

OTTAWA, January 11, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) â€" A prominent Toronto psychiatrist has severely criticized the assumptions underlying what has been dubbed by critics as the Canadian federal government's "bathroom bill," that is, Bill C-279, a private member’s bill that would afford special protection to so-called "transgender" men and women.

Dr. Joseph Berger has issued a statement saying that from a medical and scientific perspective there is no such thing as a "transgendered" person, and that terms such as “gender expression” and “gender identity" used in the bill are at the very least ambiguous, and are more an emotional appeal than a statement of scientific fact.

Berger, who is a consulting psychiatrist in Toronto and whose list of credentials establishes him as an expert in the field of mental illness, stated that people who identify themselves as "transgendered" are mentally ill or simply unhappy, and pointed out that hormone therapy and surgery are not appropriate treatments for psychosis or unhappiness.

Poems and Poets / Re: Ey Reqîb
August 14, 2014, 12:18:31 PM
Ey Reqîb is the Kurdish national anthem. It was written by the Kurdish poet and political activist, Dildar in 1938, while in jail. "Ey Reqîb" means "Oh, Enemy" or "Hey Enemy", in reference to the jail guards in the prison where Dildar was held and tortured and who also symbolized the occupying countries of Turkey, Iraq and Syria. The song was originally written in Soranî-Kurdish but nowadays it is sung in both the Sorani and the Kurmancî-dialects. In 1946, the song was adopted as the official anthem of the Kurdistan Republic of Mahabad, a short-lived Kurdish republic of the 20th century in Iran that lasted for a year.

"Ey Reqîb" has been adopted by the Kurdistan Regional Government as the official national anthem of the federal south Kurdistan.[4]--Wiki

Oh, Enemy!

Oh, enemy! The Kurdish people live on,
They have not been crushed by the weapons of any time
Let no one say Kurds are dead, they are living
They live and never shall we lower our flag

We are descendants of the red banner of the revolution
Look at our past, how bloody it is
Let no one say Kurds are dead, they are living
They live and never shall we lower our flag

The Kurdish youth rise bravely,
With their blood they colored the crown of life
Let no one say Kurds are dead, they are living
They live and never shall we lower our flag

We are the descendants of the Medes and Cyaxares
Kurdistan is our religion, our credo,
Let no one say Kurds are dead, they are living
They live and never shall we lower our flag

The Kurdish youth are ready, it is prepared,
To give their life as the supreme sacrifice
Let no one say Kurds are dead, they are living
They live and never shall we lower our flag
