"Verbally, we informed the change of schedule to the ministry but there was an error -- we admit we made a mistake in the process," Widyatmoko told reporters today on the sidelines of a parliamentary hearing.

The ministry suspended AirAsia flights from Surabaya to Singapore on Jan. 2 until March, and launched an investigation into other local airlines. On Jan.9, it revealed that five other airlines had violated permits on a total of 61 flights.

The ministry said it will sanction all parties concerned, including air traffic controllers, airport operators and the ministry officials who allowed the schedule change.

AirAsia crash

Plane was flying without permit

LINDA SILAEN, Nikkei staff writer
January 14, 2015

JAKARTA -- Indonesia AirAsia admitted on Tuesday that flight QZ8501 was flying without the correct permits when it crashed into the Java Sea between Surabaya and Singapore early on Sunday Dec. 28.

According to Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation, AirAsia had permission to fly the route on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, but not on Sundays.

Sunu Widyatmoko, Indonesia AirAsia's president, said on Tuesday that the airline had requested permission to change its schedule from Saturday to Sunday but had failed to submit the required paperwork.

spent my time traveling, helping my best friend (aka husband) at the office (hehe!) and reading all i could about the muslim mind (and opinions) after that paris tragedy.  i came across one of the best, written by abdelkader benali, printed at the international new york times.  i'm going to share it in some other thread here.

we truly need to reach out, first and foremost by not condemning the religion which, just like christianity, is a religion of peace.  we need to separate faith and rituals from the crime and the criminals.  in other words, we need to shed off some form of bigotry that we may hold, whether we admit it or not.

some reminders and ground rules for those attending the Pope's Luneta Mass on January 18:

Rizal Park and the Quirino Grandstand will be open at 6 am until 1 pm
Backpacks or bags would not be allowed into the site
Snacks and drinks are allowed but must be placed in transparent containers
Bring fans and hats, and raincoats rather than umbrellas to provide others an unobstructed view

The “popemobile” for the Manila trip will pay homage to the jeepney, the Philippines’ famous buses. It will be heavily armored but doesn’t have bulletproof glass, which Francis disdains because it is like a “sardine can” that walls him off from followers.

The sign above the entryway to Public School 20 in Paterson, N.J. (Corey Teague/Facebook)

A principal has been reassigned after a misspelled sign was displayed for more than a week outside a New Jersey public high school.

The message on the sign above the entryway to Paterson’s Public School Number 20 included three mistakes: December was spelled "Dicember," report as "reepor" and a "1" was placed backwards.

The errors drew the ire of school Paterson Board of Education member Corey Teague, who saw a photo of the misspelled sign on Facebook.

What if your diet isn’t full of probiotic-rich foods?

If you aren’t getting enough probiotics from your daily diet, a supplement can make up the difference. Most supplements contain Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, although you’ll see some with more strains (sometimes called “mega probiotics”). These pumped-up versions aren’t necessarily better, but some experts say it’s a good idea to switch supplements every month or two.

Recommendations vary, but supplements with at least 20 billion live organisms per dose tend to be most effective, experts say. You can choose from among powders, pills, and liquid shots, and some probiotics are sold chilled and must be kept that way to maintain their effectiveness. Here are a few winners in the supplement world.

Align. It contains Bifantis, a patented strain of bacteria that helps maintain digestive balance.

Florastor. A study found that this supplement alleviates antibiotic-related diarrhea and may help boost the immune system, making this a smart choice when traveling, says Dr. Reid.

Rephresh Pro-B. This is the only probiotic clinically shown to balance yeast and bacteria daily.

Be Well By Dr. Frank Lipman â€" Probiotic Powder. Add a teaspoon to your smoothie to ease chronic indigestion.

Culturelle Digestive Health Probiotic Chewables. These have been shown to boost general digestive health.

A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that eating sauerkraut may help prevent cancer. Sauerkraut goes with more than hot dogs and Reuben sandwiches: You can eat it as a stand-alone side dish (it’s a great substitute for slaw), on top of lean chicken sausage and veggie or portobello burgers, or added to stir-fries (after cooking, to avoid killing the good bacteria). “Sauerkraut adds a sour note,” says nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD. “Chefs call it a brightener â€" it makes your food’s flavor pop.”

Kefir can improve digestion and restore beneficial bacteria after a round of antibiotics. Bonus: It has more protein and less sugar than yogurt, but with the same creamy texture and tangy taste. Try it in salad dressings or smoothies. Plain kefir is in the dairy aisle and can be consumed in all the same ways as yogurt, says Keri Glassman, MS, RD, president of Nutritious Life in New York City.

The amount and kind of live cultures per bite will vary, but words like raw, lacto-fermented, or unpasteurized on the packaging indicate that the bacteria haven’t been killed off during the manufacturing process. Look for yogurt with the “live active cultures” seal; this indicates that it has not been heated after the fermentation process and contains at least 100 million cultures per gram (or 10 million cultures per gram for frozen yogurt).

In my new book 20 Pounds Younger, I detail the probiotic-friendly foods to track down at your grocery store. Here’s a sneak peak: Besides yogurt, some common fermented foods include kefir (a fermented milk drink), sauerkraut (plus it counts as a veggie!), kombucha (fermented, sweetened black and/or green tea), kimchi (spicy pickled cabbage), miso soup, and fermented pickles. It’s great if you can eat some fermented foods every day, but two or three times a week is a good place to start.

There’s another way these mighty microbes help your gut: In a recent study in the Journal of Functional Foods, people who ate probiotic-rich yogurt daily lost 3 to 4 percent of their body fat in 6 weeks. The shift in gut bacteria prompted by probiotics may favor fat burning over fat storage, explains study author Jaclyn Omar, of the University of Manitoba in Canada.

Some probiotics are much better than others. “The best, most natural forms of probiotics are fermented foods,” says Lisa Ganjhu, DO, a gastroenterologist at New York University Langone Medical Center. Fortified foods, such as probiotic-enhanced dough, may deliver fewer of the good guys, since the manufacturing process can kill off many of the healthy live cultures.

Here’s your guide to foods high in “good” bacteria.

Probiotics â€" the live microorganisms found in fermented foods such as kefir and kimchi â€" are one of the hottest, and most promising, topics in nutritional research. Your gut is teeming with trillions of bacteria that help you digest food as well as thwart intruders â€" and it turns out, you can give those friendly bacteria a boost by adding probiotics to your body.

“We’re only at the cusp of understanding the potential of probiotics,” says Gregor Reid, PhD, a microbiologist at the University of Western Ontario. Soon, Dr. Reid theorizes, probiotics may be used in prescription drugs to treat a range of conditions, from acne to depression.

The eyes of the poor, said Pope Francis, are most likely to see Christ and, through him, to see the face of God. Others who claim to fathom this mystery with the resources of intelligence must first get down on their "knees", in an act of humility , otherwise "they will not understand anything."

During his Homily the Pope focused on the Gospel of St Luke from the morning’s liturgy, reflecting on Christ’s relationship to the Father, both praising and thanking him.

PAGASA has accountability

Perez said further that unlike other foreign weather agencies, PAGASA has more accountability in their predictions.

"At the end of the day, PAGASA has accountability to Filipinos," Perez said.

PAGASA weather forecaster Jori Loiz also echoed the sentiment.

"May responsibilidad kasi kami at tinatayuan namin 'yun. 'Yung iba naman, kahit magkamali, walang mangyayari sa kanila. Kami pag nagkamali kami, yari kami," Loiz said.

Loiz added that it also affects them when Filipinos believe more the predictions of foreign weather agencies.

"Ang sakit sa amin nun, eh [It somehow pains us]," Loiz admitted.

Climatology and meteorology both refer to the scientific study of weather patterns, but the latter focuses more on short-term conditions while the former focuses on long-term trends.

In an earlier press release, the Department of Science and Technology also emphasized that PAGASA's predictions actually become more accurate as storms approach the country as the weather disturbance also becomes nearer the agency's sensors and observatory equipment.
#11174
PAGASA weather forecaster Chris Perez said their prediction models gave more weight to the Philippines' historical climate patterns.

"We also saw that scenario of the cyclone recurving and moving away instead of making landfall, but we also looked at the climatology and the historical data," Perez told InterAksyon.com.

"We ask ourselves, 'When we have the same weather system at this time of the year, what usually happens?" So we consider not only the meteorological data, but also the climatological data, and historical data," Perez added.

MANILA - The facts now bear out the earlier prediction by PAGASA that Typhoon Hagupit will barrel westward through Eastern Visayas and Southern Luzon, even as some weather agencies earlier said the typhoon may likely recurve northward and merely sideswipe Luzon as it goes straight to Japan. So how did PAGASA get it right?

To be accurate, PAGASA did mention the likelihood that Hagupit will not make landfall, a possibility then contingent on the weakening of a high-pressure area in Northern Luzon. But as early as last Wednesday, PAGASA emphasized that the storm was more likely to hit the landmass in Eastern Visayas.

samar and leyte, fr chic.

i got news from cebu that a few families in mabolo were asked to move to higher ground.  better safe than sorry, accordingly.  i'm personally worried about possible landslides at our place in cebu, which is actually on higher ground...

meanwhile, i believe our country's oratio imperata and all those other prayers have weakened the typhoon somewhat.

The duchess decided to proceed with the marriage, overcoming her children’s opposition by giving them their inheritance in advance. The duchess’s fortune included ancient palaces throughout Spain, paintings by old and modern masters (from Fra Angelico, Titian and Goya to Renoir and Marc Chagall), a first-edition copy of Cervantes’s Don Quixote, letters written by Christopher Columbus, and huge tracts of land; her wealth was estimated at between â,¬600 million and â,¬3.5 billion.

Díez formally renounced any claim to her wealth. They married on 5 October 2011 at the Palacio de las Dueñas in Seville. The Duchess, whose passions included flamenco, performed a quick few steps of the dance in front of the crowds that had gathered outside the palace on the day of the wedding. (wikipedia)

Details emerged in 2008 regarding the Duchess’s intention to marry Alfonso Díez Carabantes, a civil servant who also runs a public relations business, 24 years her junior. It was reported that there were objections from her children and from King Juan Carlos, and the House of Alba that year issued a statement saying that the relationship "was based on a long friendship and there are no plans to marry". After becoming a widow, the Duchess remarried on 16 March 1978 to Jesús Aguirre y Ortiz de Zárate (1934â€"2001), a Doctor of Theology and a former Jesuit priest. The wedding caused shock; Aguirre was illegitimate, which was scandalous in 1970s Spain. Eight years younger than the Duchess, he maintained a good relationship with her children. During their marriage he administered, with his stepson Carlos, the Alba estates. Aguirre died in 2001. (wikipedia)

On 12 October 1947, the Duchess married Don Luis Martínez de Irujo y Artázcoz (1919â€"1972), son of the Duke of Sotomayor.[3] The wedding in Spain, just after the Second World War, is considered to be one of the last great weddings of European nobility and attracted the attention of the international media. The New York Times called it "the most expensive wedding of the world." (wikipedia)

As head of the dynasty, she was styled by her most senior title of Duchess of Alba, whilst holding over 40 other hereditary titles. According to Guinness World Records, she was the most titled aristocrat in the world.

Via her descent from James FitzJames by primogeniture, she was also the heir general and senior claimant to the English dukedom of Berwick. The Duchess was King James II of England's senior direct descendant, through his illegitimate son James, whom he created 1st Duke of Berwick, and his mistress Arabella Churchill. (wikipedia)

María del Rosario Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart y de Silva, 18th Duchess of Alba de Tormes and a Grandee of Spain (28 March 1926 â€" 20 November 2014), was head of the House of Alba and the third lady to hold the title in her own right.

Born at Liria Palace on 28 March 1926, she was the only child of the 17th Duke of Alba (a prominent Spanish politician and diplomat during the 1930s and 1940s) by his wife, María del Rosario de Silva y Gurtubay, 9th Marchioness of San Vicente del Barco. Her godmother was the Queen Consort of Spain, Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, wife of Alfonso XIII de Borbón, King of Spain. (wikipedia)

Been and Gone: An eccentric duchess and a clown fanatic

By Nick Serpell
Obituary Editor, BBC News

The Duchess of Alba
March 28, 1926 - November 20, 2014,

The Duchess of Alba was probably the most eccentric figure in modern European aristocracy. She held more than 50 titles, including being a duchess seven times over, and it was claimed she could travel the length of Spain and always be on her own property. A noted beauty in her youth, her private life in turn fascinated and shocked Spanish society. On the death of her first husband, she married an unfrocked priest and, when he died, she set up with a civil servant, 24 years her junior. In later life it was widely suggested she had gone under the plastic surgeon's knife. But she denied ever having any treatment. Among the privileges that went with her rank were not having to kneel before the Pope, and the right to ride a horse into the cathedral in Seville.

8 Surprising Foods Worse Than Bacon

Bacon, crisp, greasy, delicious bacon. Is there anything more delicious? Is there anything worse for you?

Yes.

Well, there are foods worse for you, whether there are foods that are more deliciousâ€"that’s subjective, but we say no.

Bacon has a much undeserved bad rap. A single slice has only 43 calories, 3 grams of fat (1 saturated), 3 grams of protein, and 82 mg of sodium. As far as indulgences go you could eat far worse, like:

Breakfast Sausage
Calories: 267
Fat: 20 g (Saturated:  5.5 g)
Sodium: 540 mg

Next time Flo (the diner waitress, of course) asks you if you want bacon or sausage with your order of over easies, opt for bacon. You can have more than 6 slices of bacon before you come close to the damage that one pork sausage will do to your love handles and arteries.

Peanut Butter
Calories: 188
Fat: 16 g (Saturated: 3 g)
Sodium: 147 mg

Peanut butter is often touted as a super food; “healthy fats” they say. But with 3 grams of saturated fat per serving it has more than its fare share of unhealthy fats. You can have three slices of bacon before you reach the same level of saturated fat, and you’ll still have fewer calories and total fat grams.

Coffee…with Half & Half
Calories: 40
Fat: 4g (Saturated: 2 g)
Sodium: 6 mg

The calories we drink in our morning cup(s) of joe may seem inconsequential, but two tablespoons of half-and-half has as many calories as a slice of bacon and twice as much saturated fat.

Starburst Fruit Chews
Calories: 241
Fat: 5g (Saturated 5 g)
Sodium: 1mg

Candy isn’t exactly health food, we know that, but a little treat now and then is a perfectly acceptable part of balanced diet. But Starburst, those tasty square taffy-esque nuggets of happiness, are surprisingly ALL saturated fat.  At least bacon has some healthy fats (and protein).

Caesar Dressing
Calories: 79
Fat: 8g (Saturated 1 g)
Sodium: 156mg

Choosing between a BLT and a Caesar Salad, go with the BLT! One tablespoon of Caesar dressing (and let’s be honest, who uses just one tablespoon) has almost twice as many calories, three times as much fat and the same amount of saturated fat as a slice of bacon. If your BLT has three slices of bacon and your Caesar salad as 3 spoonfuls of dressing, your choice is pretty obvious.

By the way, that Caesar dressing probably isn’t vegetarian-friendly either.

American Cheese
Calories: 105
Fat: 9g (Saturated 6 g)
Sodium: 182mg

A one-ounce serving of American Cheese (a standard slice) has three times as much fat/six times as much saturated fat than a single slice of bacon. Does that make you think twice about your favorite breakfast sandwich?

Kellogg’s Cracklin’ Oat Bran
Calories: 197
Fat: 7g (Saturated 3 g)
Sodium: 35mg

Think you’re doing your body a favor by opting for cereal instead of bacon with breakfast? Think again! The only thing this “good for you” cereal has over bacon is fiberâ€"which you can easily get from high quality bread. You can have three slices of bacon with your breakfast and still have fewer calories than this cereal (and don’t forget the added fat and calories from milk).

Turkey Bacon
Calories: 35
Fat: 3g (Saturated 1 g)
Sodium: 180mg

Turkey bacon may have 7 calories fewer per slice (yes, that’s it, 7) but it has exactly the same amount of fat and sat fat and more than twice the sodium.  You’re doing yourself no favors by opting for chopped and formed turkey meat; just go with the real stuff and enjoy your bacon!

5. Eat This, Not Tilapia!

When it comes to choosing a fish that’s healthiest for your bodyâ€"and the Earthâ€"abide by the number one rule: Stay off the farm. Farmed seafood, not just tilapia, can have up to 10 times more toxins than wild fish, according to Harvard Researchers. Your best choices at the fish counter include: Wild Alaskan Salmon, Alaska Pollok, Atlantic Cod, Clams, Blue Crab, Atlantic Mackerel, Striped Bass, Sardines, Herring, Rainbow Trout and Flounder.

4. They Cause a Negative Environmental Impact

Environmentalists argue that intensive and unregulated tilapia farming is damaging ecosystems, leaving dead lakes and extinct species in poor countries with practices prohibited in the United States. In Nicaragua, for example, huge numbers of fish are bred in cages, where fish waste pollutes the lake water. Such was the case at Lake Apoyo, where pollution killed off the aquatic plants, leaving the lake a wasteland.

You might be more concerned to learn that you're actively polluting your body! Even if you're avoiding high fructose corn syrup, there's still the 5 Grossest Food Additives You're Already Eating to worry about.

3. They've Had a Sex Change

Virtually all tilapia sold in American supermarkets has undergone a sex changeâ€"the result of being fed methyltestosterone during the early, sexless stage of life. Tilapia pumped full of hormones grow bigger quicker than their natural bros, because they don’t expend energy developing reproductive organs and require less food. Seafood experts consider the effects of methyltestosterone in fish to be insignificant to our health. However, there’s research to suggest the drug can be highly toxic to the liver. In fact, methyltestosterone has been taken off the market in Germany due to its high potential for liver toxicity.

2. They Have the Crappiest Diet

There’s a good chance the tilapia on your plate was raised on a poop diet (that’s poop as a noun, not an adjective). Research from the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future revealed the gory details of disease-ridden fish farms in Asia, where pig and chicken feces serve as a cheaper alternative to standard fish food. While the FDA vehemently denied any of these goings-on, the Johns Hopkins investigation revealed only 2 percent of imported seafood to the United States is actually tested for contamination. It’s not just mega gross. Experts worry that the large amounts of antibiotics given to the fish to ward off infections may give rise to antibiotic-resistant strains of salmonella.

1. It's the Worst Kind of Fat

Compared with other fish, farmed tilapia contains relatively small amounts of beneficial omega-3 fatty acidsâ€"the heart-healthy and essential fish oils touted by health and nutrition experts as the main reason to eat fish frequently. While a portion of salmon has over 2,000 milligrams of omega-3 fatty acids, a serving of tilapia has a mere 135 milligrams. Moreover, because farmed tilapia subsist on a diet of corn and soy instead of lake plants, they’re proportionally sky high in omega-6 fats, which studies have proven to harm the heart, the brain, and even your mood. The Wake Forest University study that produced the tilapia vs. bacon findings revolves around this dangerous omega 6:3 proportion.
