World Daily News / Re: The Great Rulers of the World

Hannibal (Canaanite, Punic or Carthaginian Hebrew: ??????, Ba'al is my grace, or Ba'al has given me grace), son of Hamilcar Barca, (247 BC â€" ca. 183 BC,[1][2][3][4][5] short form Hannibal) was a Carthaginian military commander and tactician, later also working in other professions, who is popularly credited as one of the finest commanders in history. He lived during a period of tension in the Mediterranean, when Rome (then the Roman Republic) established its supremacy over other great powers such as Carthage, Macedon, Syracuse, and the Seleucid empire. He is one of the best-known Carthaginian commanders. His most famous achievement was at the outbreak of the Second Punic War, when he marched an army, which included war elephants, from Iberia over the Pyrenees and the Alps into northern Italy.

During his invasion of Italy, he defeated the Romans in a series of battles, including those at Trebia, Trasimene and Cannae. He maintained an army in Italy for more than a decade afterward, never losing a major engagement, but could not force the Romans to accept his terms for peace. A Roman counter-invasion of Africa forced him to return to Carthage, where he was defeated in the Battle of Zama. After the war he successfully ran for the office of suffet. He enacted political and financial reforms to enable the payment of the war indemnity imposed by Rome. However, his reforms were unpopular with members of the upper Roman class forcing Hannibal to go into exile. During his exile, he lived at the Seleucid court, where he acted as military advisor to Antiochus III in his war against Rome. After Antiochus III met defeat and was forced to accept their terms, Hannibal fled again, making a stop in Armenia, where he worked as a planner for the new capital. His flight ended in the court of Bithynia where he may have achieved an outstanding naval victory by means of biological warfare and was afterwards betrayed to the Romans.

Hannibal is universally ranked as one of the greatest military commanders and tacticians in history.[citation needed] Military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge once famously called Hannibal the "father of strategy",[6] because his greatest enemy, Rome, came to adopt elements of his military tactics in its own strategic arsenal. This praise has earned him a strong reputation in the modern world and he was regarded as a "gifted strategist" by men like Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington. His life has been the basis for a number of films and documentaries.

He has been attributed with the famous quotation, "We will either find a way, or make one."

World's First Eyeball Tattoo! - White turned blue
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

In the middle of the procedure

Skin tattoos are obsolete. Even savage tribes in the jungle can do them. But this new tattoo reinforces the idea that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Imagination gone wild (or wrong?) has come with the world's first ever eyeball tattoo. Now, those dreaming on having blue eyes can do it.

The procedure changed the volunteer's eye blue following 40 insertions of the needle. The blue ink was mixed with antibiotic eyewash. This tattooing colored the eye white in blue. The honor was given to Pauly Unstoppable, a Toronto resident with a perfect vision, by the Canadian company ModProm.

"I really have to emphasize again that the procedure was extensively researched and done by people who were aware of the risks and possible complications and that it should not be casually attempted. Now that this experiment has been started, please wait for us to either heal or go blind before trying it," said Pauly.

The result

Pauly Unstoppable is already famous for his heavy body modifications. Amongst others, he has the biggest stretched nostrils in the West.

Still, a medical-aimed tattooing of the eyeball could have been made by Brisbane eye surgeon Prof. Laurie Hirst. Hirst, the executive director of the Prevent Blindness Foundation, tattooed an iris and pupil on the milk-white front of the damaged right eye of Kylie Keohane, 11. Kylie had lost sight in her eye because of an infection acquired as a baby. Glaucoma had also changed the shape of the sightless eye over the years, so that even contact lens made to match Kylie's good eye refused to stay in place.

Before the procedure

Three tattooists spent over 12 hours schooling Hirst in the tattooing technique, and the doctor practiced that on the eyeballs of slaughterhouse animals. The colors were mixed to fit the natural eye color of Kylie.

The History of Modern Calendar and Leap Year - From Julian to Gregorian
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The calendar gives us the temporal dimension. Without it, we could not register the succession of the events.

Calendars use three main notions: week, month and year. The last two originated in the observation of the astronomic events (the phases of the Moon and the Sun). The week was, at its origins, just a division of the month. The difficulty of comparing the duration of time is due to the fact that these units are not, one compared to another, matching multiples, fact that made all calendars to be affected by their lack of correlation, fact that imposed repeated corrections and adjustments.

The ancestor of the modern calendar is the Roman or solar calendar. Before being stabilized in 45 BC through a decree emitted by Julius Caesar, the Roman calendar experienced many variations. At its origins, it was made of 10 months: 4 of 31 days and 6 of 30 days, resulting a very short year, made of 304 days. The months January and February were added by Tarquinius and Numa, the 365 days being divided in 4 months of 31 days, 7 months of 29 days and one of 28. The first days of the months were the calends, the 5th and the 7th - the nones, and the 13th and the 15th - the ides.

Even so, the year was shorter than in reality, and the Romans introduced the intercalated months: one of 29 days at each two years. To adjust the discordance between the calendar and seasons, the Julian calendar used the calculations of the Greek astronomer Sosigene and was based on the adoption of a 365.25 days year: 3 years of 365 days followed by a 366 days year, the supplementary day being added always after the 24th of February (sexto ante calendas Martiis = the sixth day before the March calends) being called bis sexto (the sixth day bis), hence the names of bisect year and bisect day for the leap day. The year was divided in 12 months, which alternated 31 and 30 days and February had, in normal years, 29 days and 30 days in bisect years.

Later, when the eighth month was dedicated to the emperor Augustus (August), this month was made of 31 days to match July, the month dedicated to Julius Caesar. That's why February was made of 28 days, having 29 days in bisect years.

During the 16th century, the advance of the calendar was of 10 days compared to the real position of the Sun, and pope Gregorius XIII imposed the suppression of those days and a new reform. The Gregorian reform of passing from the 4th of October to 15 of October, in 1582, was subsequently adopted by all catholic states, then by the others, representing the current form of the calendar.

The average Gregorian year is of 365.2425 days, the plus compared to the astronomic year being of just 3 days at 10,000 years, which is acceptable. The Gregorian years starts, like in the Julian one, with the first day of January, just the date of the spring equinox (20 or 21 March) remaining variable (in the case of the bisect years). In what concerns the bisect years, to avoid a new future disparity, it was decided that the century years not to be bisect, except those dividing to 400: 1600, 2000, 2400...

Childhood Spanking Increases the Chances of Practicing Sexual Perversions Later in Life! - Side effects of spanking
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Are you a sexual pervert? That's because your parents spanked you while you were a child. These are the results of four studies and a meta-analysis presented at the American Psychological Association's Summit on Violence and Abuse in Relationships.

"Something experienced by many American kids gets an average of half a page in child development text books and not a single one comes to the conclusion that parents should never spank," said Murray Straus, a spanking expert, co-director of the Family Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire, in Durham, and author of the four studies.

The meta-analysis of spanking studies was made by Elizabeth Gershoff, an assistant professor at the University of Michigan's School of Social Work. 93% of the researches pointed that spanking can lead to issues like delinquent and anti-social behavior in childhood, along with aggression, criminal and anti-social behavior and spousal or child abuse as an adult.

"There's probably nothing else in child development that has 93% agreement in results. 5% of people who have never been spanked hit their partners, versus 25% of those who were spanked frequently. However, some 90% of US parents spank toddlers," said Straus.

Spanking and other corporal punishment is connected with a higher probability of verbally and physically forcing a dating partner to have sex; risky sexual behavior like premarital sex without using a condom; and masochistic sexual behavior, like spanking during intercourse.

"The more parents spank, the higher the probability of harmful side effects. If a person says, 'I was spanked, and I don't have any interest in bondage and discipline sex, that's correct, but it's not because spanking is OK, it's because they're one of the lucky ones," said Straus.

And spanking appears to be addictive.

"The trouble is, if you have a two-year-old, you pretty soon decide you can't avoid it. The recidivism rate for whatever 'crime' you correct a two-year-old for is about 50% in two hours. I have come to the conclusion that parents should never, ever spank because, although it does work, it's no better than non-hitting methods that don't have harmful side effects," said Straus.
