This word, which shan’t be uttered twice, is a transliteration of a word coined by Greek author Aristophanes in his comic play Assemblywomen.  Containing 171 letters, it is the longest word appearing in literature and refers to a fictional dish; the word quite literally is just the smooshing together of the 17 ingredients contained within (including sharks, pigeons, honey, and various unappetizing animal parts).  Don’t expect to see this listed on any menu, as there surely wouldn’t be enough room to list anything else.

Holy moly guacamole!  :-X

Dressed in his black monk`s robe, he stood at the front of the hall, listening to stories of babies delivered long ago and blessing everyone. It took an hour and a half. The sweat was pouring off him by the end and the church was nearly empty.

He looked pale as he sat and a volunteer came up to him. ``How about a sandwich, Father?`` she said.

``I`d like about four sandwiches,`` he said.

``You need a vacation,`` she said.

``Tell the abbot,`` the newest priest said, biting into his first sandwich.

The Rev. Declan Cunniff, his mentor, said the new priest did ``fine.`` Young priests sometimes showboat a little their first time, Father Declan said, but Father Paul played it straight. He kept the homily short and formal, suggesting people call on the Holy Spirit as often as the Father and the Son.

There were pastries, sandwiches, wine and two kinds of punch at the church reception. Hundreds attended. Mickey Alger, who worked as a nurse with him, flew in specially from Cape Cod. She said he was always a gentleman as a physician, and it was a privilege to attend his first Mass.

His sons -- Paul and James, both lawyers -- remembered the day five years ago, watching the late news with him. ``He said `Boys, I have something to tell you,` `` James recalled. While they were not exactly expecting their father to say he was going to a monastery, they were not shocked.

In 1929, he graduated from the prep school affiliated with the abbey. Most of his life, he attended church daily. When he stayed overnight at the hospital, the nurses gave him a 6 a.m. wake-up call for Mass. He was the gynecologist for many of the diocese`s nuns.

He was known for never missing a meal and loving a joke, particularly one of his own. This appears to be true still. Talking with a reporter, the abbot tried to stress the shortage of monks and the need for more to make the commitment. ``I don`t think you should call it a second career,`` Abbot Melvin said. ``It`s a relationship where you`ve fallen in love with God. But don`t call it a second career.``

``Call me anything,`` Father Paul put in, ``just don`t call me late for supper.``

He did all his assigned chores, running the infirmary, sorting mail and ironing the altar cloths. ``In this abbey,`` Abbot Melvin said, ``people work their behinds off.``

Those looking for deep explanations for his joining the monastery were disappointed. Usually Flanagan told people, ``It didn`t seem like a big step.`` Or if they seem to need something else, he says, ``You learn more about God.`` He was never a gabby physician and he is not a gabby monk.

As for monastic life, he said, ``I`m not crazy about getting up at quarter after 5, but that`s the deal.``

When the abbot felt it was time, the monk`s two sons invited those who knew him as a doctor to watch him become a priest. When asked how he felt, Brother Paul said, ``I`m a little bit excited, probably.``

For two weeks he had traveled to St. Joseph`s and practiced in an empty church. On May 17, his 74th birthday, he was ordained. He remembered his deceased wife in his prayers and everything was going well, until he gave his first priestly blessing, to his baby grandson, William James. By the time he was back at the altar, the new priest had stopped crying.

Pentecost Sunday, at his first mass, he was easy to spot, a head shorter than all the priests and monsignors who came to honor him.

``You have to be a monk first,`` Abbot Melvin Valvano said.

``That`s OK,`` Flanagan said.

Because of Flanagan`s 40 years as a physician, the abbot waived the usual psychiatric screening for candidates, but even so, the abbot warned, it takes years to be a priest.

The doctor -- 68 at the time -- said he understood. ``They don`t want to get some screwball who walks around like this all the time,`` he said, looking upward and holding his hands like the monks do on the late-night movies. ``Those guys don`t make good priests.``

The doctor proved to be an obedient monk, Abbot Melvin said. He took the name Paul, and at the four prayer services each day, Abbot Melvin could often hear Brother Paul`s deep voice above the rest. His good humor was valued. When Brother Paul read the newspaper comics, the other monks gathered to watch. They liked the idea of a monk who so easily laughed out loud.

The new monk did not mind the grand silences that started in the evening, and continued to breakfast. He liked that the monks unplugged the telephone at night -- he had spent a lifetime being roused from bed to deliver babies.
#1116
O`Brien feels particular fondness for the new priest. He delivered Marty and her five other children.

``He delivered all four of my children,`` said Stella Caggiano, who waited half an hour to be blessed. ``I have two sisters, and he delivered all eight of their children.``

When Bess Zois finally got to the front of the line, she said: ``My baby`s going to be 26 in November. You delivered my last one.`` Then she bent down slightly and kissed the smallest priest at St. Joseph`s -- 74-year-old Father Paul, formerly James Flanagan, M.D. -- near the top of his head.

Five years ago, with 5,000 babies to his credit, Flanagan, walked into Newark Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in the heart of the inner city, and said to the abbot, ``I want to be a priest.``

Inspiration & Hope / When A Physician Becomes A Priest
November 21, 2013, 04:19:47 PM
MAPLEWOOD, N.J. -- When a new Roman Catholic priest celebrates his first Mass, there is great excitement in a church, and, afterward, for good luck, people line up to get a special blessing from him.

As the line formed at St. Joseph`s here the other day, Midge O`Brien looked at her youngest, 9-year-old Marty, who was running in church. ``Go get in line,`` she said. ``You can use a blessing.``

Bible Study / The Prayer~ O Lord Forgive.
November 21, 2013, 11:26:22 AM
My failure to be true even to my own accepted standards:
O Lord, forgive!

"My self-deception in the face of temptation: O Lord, forgive!
My choosing of the worse when I knew the better:
O Lord forgive!

My failure to apply to myself the standards of conduct that I demand of others;
Lord forgive!

My blindness to the suffering of others and my slowness to be taught by my own:
O Lord, forgive!

My complacence toward wrongs that do not touch my won case and my over sensitiveness to those that do:
O Lord, forgive!

My slowness to see the good in my fellows and to see the evil in myself:
O Lord forgive!

My hardness of heart toward my neighbor's faults and my readiness to make allowance for my own:
O Lord for give!

My unwillingness to believe that You have called me to a small work and my brother to a great one:
O Lord, forgive!

Amen.

Bible Study / Offering of the Will
November 21, 2013, 11:13:36 AM
Lord, I come to offer You my will. I live these years when it is being forged. I want to offer it to You, so that You make it all Yours. Save it from the diseases which threaten it.

By the grace of Your Spirit, make my will strong, not afraid of obstacles, persevering, not giving up because of stumbles, aiming at horizons higher and wider than my immediate needs, capable of making sacrifices to build a more vibrant future.

Give me a will which is strong but not obstinate, willing to listen to voices of calm and experience, not presumptuous, but conscious of my limitations, not arrogant, choosing not to belittle those less fortunate than me, not selfish, willing to assist those in need of help.

Help me to understand that it is in doing small things that a great will is forged, in doing humble things that a noble will gets its wings, in doing routine duties well that I prepare myself for heroic deeds.
Be at my side, Lord, to lift me up, and push me forward, when the going gets rough, and I am boneweary, when I don't want to get up after so many falls, when I don't feel like doing anything to get myself out of the dumps.

Help me say with You: "Not my will, Father, but Yours be done!" Help me conquer myself, before I am to conquer the world, and to be master of myself, before I am to lead others.

Amen.

Bible Study / Offering of One's Senses
November 21, 2013, 11:10:46 AM
Lord, sometimes I have a hard time finding something to pray about, yet the reasons to give You thanks are not lacking. Aren't there young people whose life's wish is found in these words: "God, I wish I could see!" or "Lord, I wish I could hear!"

Yet, Lord, I who see, hear, speak with such ease, often forget to thank You for these gifts which I take for granted.

Today, I thank You for my eyes which see light, colors, and the faces of those who love me.
I thank You for my hearing which allows me to enjoy people's voice and music.
I thank You for my voice which allows me to express my thoughts and innermost feelings.
I thank You also for the sense of smell, and the sense of touch.
Lord, You have given me the senses. I now offer them back to You.
Help me to use my senses sensibly, to see your beauty in the beauty of human faces and bodies, of flowers and rainbows, of nature and art; to use my eyes to read what will enrich my mind, ennoble my soul; to use my ears to listen to your Word and to what philosophers and scientists have to say about the mysteries of man, of the universe, of creation, so that I may better understand myself, others, and You, the Creator of all things seen and unseen, known and unknowable; about the past and the present, so that I may better understand myself, others, and You; to use my voice to proclaim the truth and to spread the joy around me.

Amen.

Poems and Poets / “A Child My Choice”
November 21, 2013, 11:00:20 AM
Let folly praise what fancy loves, I praise and loves that Child
Whose heart no thought, whose tongue no word, whose hand
no deed defiled.

I praise him most, I love him best, all praise and love is his,
While him I love, in him I live, and cannot live amiss.
Love’s sweetest mark, laud’s highest theme, man’s most desired light,
To love him life, to leave him death, to live in him delight.
He mine by gift, I his by debt, thus each to other due,
First friend he was, best friend he is, all times will try him true.
Though young, yet wise; though small, yet strong; though man,
yet God he is:

As wise he knows; as strong he can; as God he loves to bliss.
His knowledge rules; his strength defends; his love doth cherish all;
His birth our Joy; his life out light; his death our end of thrall.
Alas, he weeps, he sighs, he pants, yet do his Angels sing;
Out of his tears, his sighs and throbs, doth bud a joyful spring.
Almighty babe, whose tender arms can force all foes to fly,
Correct my faults, protect my life, direct me when I die.

â€"St. Robert Southwell
#1162
I fled Him, down the nights and down the days:
I fled Him, down the arches of the years;
I fled Him, down the labyrinthine way
Of my own mind; and in the midst of tears
I hid from Him, and under running laughter.
Up vistaed hopes I sped;
And shot, precipitated,
Adown Titanic glooms of chasmed fears,
From those strong Feet that followed, followed after.
But with unhurrying chase,
And unperturbed pace,
Deliberate speed, majestic instancy,
They beat â€" and a Voice beat
More instant than the Feetâ€"
“All things betray thee, who betrayest Me.”

going into this field, one has to sacrifice a lot of time. my twenties have rushed by, most of it was spent in labs, classrooms, hospitals, seminars. the solace a doctor gets is in seeing the eyes of one's patients, seeing the relief they get when we give treatment to their malady. the smile of a young child after i bandage his arms, or to hear the laughter of an elderly patient after spending some minutes to check up on them..is reward alone.

in a way, i see a semblance of a priest and a physician. the priest cares for the soul of man, whereas the physician cares for the body of man.

i find satisfaction in this. the rewards outweighs the sacrifices.

Haha, i said to her, "when the right one comes along".

Jesus, You are my code of conduct; I strive to comply with Your precepts. Teach me all I need to know about respect, Its mastery being my long-term objective. May this include learning to listen, Allowing others to share their opinions. May my respect towards other humans Truly reflect Your love towards all!

Jesus, magnificent Fountain of hope, In times of happiness and despair, You are the motivation of my heart, My hope of greater things to come. My consciousness is obsessed with You; I hunger for the day we will meet, When my longing will become a reality. Transmit to my soul daily reminders To always hope for greater things. For without hope, life is futile. Hope is a spiritual pillar of faith, Containing many rewards of its own!

Bible Study / A Prayer for the Virtue of Compassion
November 20, 2013, 04:37:15 PM
Compassionate and merciful Jesus, My heart longs for Your perfection. Not only do You share in my sufferings, You have voluntarily accepted them. Your proficiency at perceiving my soul Is compared to reading large fonts in a book: Nothing is hidden from Your panorama! Your merciful nature knows my intentions. Considering my continuous weaknesses, You are dedicated to the cause of my salvation. Jesus, You are most kind and forgiving: You are the proven Lord of compassion!

Father in Heaven,
the light of your truth bestows sight
to the darkness of sinful eyes.
May this season of repentance
bring us the blessing of Your forgiveness
and the gift of Your light.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.

Bible Study / Act of Humility
November 20, 2013, 04:29:04 PM
O DIVINE Lord, how shall I dare to approach you, I who have so often offended you? No, Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof; but speak only the word and my soul shall be healed.

Bible Study / Act of Right Intention
November 20, 2013, 04:27:31 PM
My dear Redeemer, it is not from custom or human respect that I come to receive Thee; but it is solely to love and be united to Thee, to live by Thee and for Thee, to be delivered from my miseries, to clothe myself with Thy virtues, to strengthen myself against my enemies; it is to ask from Thee the exaltation of the Church, Thy beloved spouse, the conversion of sinners, perseverance for the just, and deliverance for the poor souls in Purgatory. Purify more and more my intentions, rectify them, O my Jesus, render them conformable to Thee; this is my sole desire.

Obituary / Re: Please Pray for My Friend Robert Matson

robert was a prolific writer, a poet , and a humanitarian. he volunteered his whole summer in 2005 -2006 to help rebuild homes after hurricane katrina demolished new orleans. i remember reading some of the poems he wrote in tribute to katrina victims. he had a big heart for people that were suffering , and to be honest, took suffering of others to a personal level. he kept on telling me how unfair this world was, especially for the innocent people that suffered.

I can hear his voice resound in my head, "Oh Al buddy, you gotta learn to not take things too seriously. You gotta learn to relax, buddy ol pal...."

in life he was always full of jokes, and sensed whenever i was being "too serious", or "stressing for nothing".

always knew when to pop a joke to lighten my soul and to make me laugh. i miss laughing with that guy. green jokes abounding.. :P

yes, let him rest in peace. in life he may have made mistakes, the clouded mind in search of acceptance and a home. we may never really know why people do the things they do, but we leave all to the judgment of god. that said, may god have mercy on this man's soul. mercy, mercy be given to him, oh Lord Jesus Christ, who is infinitely merciful...

Lord our God, the death of Robert recalls our human condition and the brevity of our lives on earth. But for those who believe in Your love, death is not the end, nor does it destroy the bonds that You forge in our lives. We share the faith of Your Son's disciples and the hope of the children of God. Bring the light of Christ's resurrection to this time of testing and pain as we pray for Robert and for those who love him through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Friend after friends departs;
Who hath not lost a friend?
There is no union here of hearts
That hath not here its end.
