We must think that everyone of us are created equal and have same right..so why not accept the fact that homosexual exist? As long as  wala sila naghatag og dautan nga impluwensya sa atong katilingban so nganu mang dile man nato sila dawaton? Its just easy to say some bad reactions if you are not really engage on a particular situation, pero kung kamo pa sad ay naingon sa uban i know lisod ninyu usab nga dawaton ang biay2x sa kadaghanan..Tawo sad sila nga adunay kasing2x nga masakitan, so we must learn to accept them as part of our society..

So og ako sad ay makabana og homosexual, dawaton sad nako oi, kinahanglan ako irespeto sad ang iyang kaugalingong kalipay, unsaon taman og nigawas ang lain na sad niyang color :) dile ta kapugos unya pananglitan og naa namiy anak kinahanglan jud magkasinabot..Aw magsinabtanay lang ang problema og karibal mi kay murag dile na tingale madala og sinabtanay :D

CEBU CITY, Philippines -- Two passengers sustained slight injuries when an Ormoc City-bound passenger vessel and a cargo vessel bound for Cebu City collided early Saturday off the waters of Liloan, Cebu.

Chief Petty Officer Virgilio Tibayan of the Cebu Coastguard identified the injured as Michael Sortena, 41, and Vincent Mateo, 45, both passengers of MV Wonderful Star owned by Roble Shipping Lines.

Both vessels were able to sail to their ports of destination, the Philippine Coast Guard in Manila said.

The passenger vessel left Cebu City's Pier 3 at 10 p.m. Friday bound for Ormoc City in Leyte.

MV Wonderful Star collided with a foreign-owned cargo vessel MCC Sulo at 1:20 a.m. Saturday around 4.5 nautical miles from Liloan town, some 19 kilometers north of Cebu City.

Commander Antonio Cuasito, Coastguard District Central Eastern Visayas chief of staff, said the two vessels sustained slight damages.

The MV Wonderful Star's port side (left side) catwalk railings were slightly damaged while MCC Sulo's starboard (right) bow had a slight scratch, Cuasito said.

MV Wonderful Star, with 607 passengers (including nine children and 12 infants) and 78 crewmen, arrived safely in Ormoc City at 5:20 a.m. It was scheduled to arrive at Ormoc City at around 3:30 a.m.

The two injured passengers who sustained slight injuries on their arms were brought to Ospa Medical Center for treatment.

The MCC Sulo carrying containerized cargoes also arrived at the Cebu International Port at 4 a.m.

Cuasito said the Coast Guard had called the officials of Roble Shipping Lines and MCC Sulo for a meeting at 5 p.m. Saturday to find out why the accident occurred.

Both vessels claimed they radioed each other but did not get any response.

Cuasito, however, said that the MCC Sulo was sailing too fast at 70 knots while the passenger was sailing at only 12 knots.

However, he would not say if 70 knots could be considered over-speeding.

The Coast Guard has required the ship captain Alex D. Estabillo and Wonderful Star ship captain Joseph Andrew Lape to file a marine protest.

MCC Sulo, which has 19 crewmen on board, had a 9,996- gross tonnage while Wonderful Star had a gross tonnage of 1,297. (With Katherine Evangelista, INQUIRER.net )

MANILA, Philippines -- Police are investigating a Catholic priest based in Bontoc, Mountain Province after he was accused of sexually assaulting a teenaged girl several times.

Fr. Gabriel Madangeng Jr. of Sta. Rita parish allegedly raped and assaulted his ward, who was 15 years old two years ago, in the parish convent, the secretariat of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) disclosed Tuesday.

According to the CBCP, Madangeng is facing seven counts of indecent assault that happened between August to December 2006.

The girl, now 17 years old, said she did not report the incident to authorities and her parents in 2006 because she was afraid that Madangeng would stop paying for her tuition.

This was the second time that Madangeng has been accused of sexually assaulting a teenager. Last year, a 15-year-old girl filed rape charges against the priest in a local court.

Because of the first case, Madangeng has been placed on a "floating status" pending the investigation of Church officials.

The priest, however, strongly denied raping or assaulting the teenager, whom he accused of making up stories.

“I am a man of cloth and I could not have committed the alleged acts which are in total violation of my vocation,” he said.

“The charges hurled against me are without basis and false and are being made by the complainant to mitigate any reaction which her parents would have against her after she was discovered to have been dating a man in Bontoc,” he added.

The Vicariate of Bontoc-Lagawe, which has jurisdiction on the accused, has not yet issued any statement on the matter.(Inquirer.Net)

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) At least 86 people were killed while over 700 others were missing after typhoon "Frank" (international codename: Fengshen) ravaged the Visayas and Southern Luzon, including Metro Manila, officials said Sunday.

The storm caused a passenger ferry to capsize, triggered floods, which ran as deep as six feet in Iloilo province, forcing tens of thousands to evacuation centers, and caused power outages.

The M/V Princess of the Star, carrying 626 passengers and 121 crew members capsized off Sibuyan Island in the central province of Romblon at 6 p.m. Saturday, hours after it went dead at sea due to engine failure. Four people have been confirmed killed while three others were rescued, officials said.

Elsewhere, the Department of Health reported 82 deaths, mostly due to flooding, of which, 74 are confirmed while eight are unconfirmed.

The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) reported three people were missing after they were swept away by flood waters, one in Murcia town, Negros Occidental province, and two in Guimaras province.

At 10 a.m., the eye of "Frank," which packs maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour with gusts of up to 150 kilometers per hour near the center, was located over Clark Field in Pampanga province or 70 kilometers north of Metro Manila.

Moving northwest at 15 kilometers per hour, the storm is expected to exit through the western coast of Central Luzon by Sunday evening.

Senator Richard Gordon, chairman of the Philippine National Red Cross, said there was still hope for survivors in the capsized ferry, since it did not sink, and the trapped passengers could be seeking refuge inside the overturned hull.

The Philippine Navy has dispatched two patrol gunboats, one from Masbate province and one from Roxas City, manned by frogmen and equipped with rubber boats, to help in the search, said Navy spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Edgard Arevalo.

The Coast Guard has dispatched two ships, BRP Pampanga and BRP Davao del Norte, and two others are being readied for deployment, said Vice Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo, commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard.

The Navy will dispatch a bigger ship, the PS28, once the weather conditions permit, Arevalo said.

Gordon said he has sought the help of the United States Armed Forces to deploy rescue helicopters to the site of the capsized ferry.

"Every minute counts," Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said, referring to the rescue efforts on the capsized ship.

"They are still considered missing," Gordon said of the 740 passengers and crew who have yet to be recovered.

Ermita and Vice President Noli de Castro presided over a meeting of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) on the effects of "Frank" at the Department of National Defense (DND) in Camp Aguinaldo.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo joined the meeting via speakerphone from San Francisco, California, where she is at the start of a 10-day official US visit.

De Castro said the President ordered government agencies to press on with rescue and relief efforts. Another teleconference was set at 3 a.m. Manila time at the Kalayaan Hall in Malacañang Palace.

Romblon Representative Eleandro Jesus Madrona and the Navy spokesman said there were reports that some survivors of the ill-fated ferry swam to safety to an islet called Cristo de Gallo, an estimated 30 minutes by rubber boat from the capsized vessel.

The mayor of San Fernando town, Romblon, Nanette Tansingco, who was placed on speakerphone during the NDCC meeting said a "big" hole was seen on the exposed part of the ship's hull.

Tansingco also made an appeal for medicine, relief supplies, and body bags. Gordon said the request for body bags was for the "decent" handling of the recovered fatalities and did not necessarily mean that the government was expecting heavy casualties.

Gordon said the reported hole on the ship could be used by the survivors, who are trapped inside the ship, to escape.

Floods, storm surge, and landslides affected 366,444 people, of which, 70,717 are in evacuation centers as of 6 a.m. Sunday, the NDCC said.

Of the total number of affected people, 182,686 were in the Western Visayas, including 155,005 in Antique province alone, the NDCC said.

The storm has stranded 5,095 passengers, 288 rolling cargo, 90 trucks, 59 passenger buses, 48 small vehicles, and eight sea vessels, the NDCC said.

Heavy rains and strong winds totally damaged 127 houses and partially damaged 16 others, the NDCC said.

Power outages were reported in Odiongan town, Romblon province, Antique province, and Iloilo City, the agency said.

The military has also readied its troops and vehicles to assist in rescue and relief operations, said Lieutenant Colonel Jonas Lumawag and Captain Carlo Ferrer, spokesmen for the Philippine Marines and the military's Metro Manila command, respectively.

All domestic flights scheduled until 12 noon on Sunday, at the old Manila Domestic Airport, were cancelled due to typhoon Frank, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) announced on dzMM radio that it was resuming normal operations.

There has been no word yet whether flights of other airlines scheduled in the afternoon will be allowed to take off as scheduled after 12 p.m.

PAL, which uses the domestic airport of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport-2, cancelled two flights of its budget brand, PAL Express, to Caticlan. Other domestic flights of PAL and its sister company, Air Philippines have been delayed.

At the old NAIA terminal, a total of 27 international flights coming to and from Manila have either been delayed or cancelled.

Fourteen flights of Northwest Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines, China Airlines and Continental Micronesia were delayed Sunday morning.

Cebu Pacific cancelled flights to Hong Kong and Taipei, and their respective turnarounds.

Two other flights of Cebu Pacific bound for Manila and coming from Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, and Bangkok were diverted to Cebu.

Heavy rains caused floods in several parts of Metro Manila, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

In Araneta Avenue, Maria Clara, a creek has reportedly overflowed, making the area impassable to all types of vehicles.

The MMDA has also received reports of knee-deep floods in Pureza, Manila, making it impassable to light vehicles.

General San Miguel in Malabon also has knee-deep floods and is impassable to light vehicles.

Also not passable to light vehicles were Banaue Retiro and the Park and Fly area near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, according to the MMDA.

The Quezon Avenue-Araneta route was not passable to light vehicles because of tire-deep floods.

In Acacia Lane, Shaw Boulevard, tire-deep floods were recorded but the area was still passable, according to the MMDA metrobase.

Floods in EDSA Bagong Barrio, MCU-Monumento, roads en route to Nichols and NAIA, Andrew Tramo, and Gate 4 Camp Aguinaldo were all recorded to be gutter deep, still passable to vehicles.

In Tacloban City, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) reported P888.50 million in damage to agriculture and infrastructure in the Eastern Visayas.

Public storm signal number 3 (100 to 185 kilometer per hour winds) was raised in Metro Manila, Batangas, Laguna, Cavite, Rizal, Bulacan, northern Quezon, southern Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Bataan, Zambales, Tarlac, Pangasinan, Benguet, and La Union.

Signal number 2 (60 to 100 kilometer per hour winds) was raised in the Mindoro provinces, Lubang sland, Marinduque, the Bondoc Peninsula, Polilio Island, the rest of Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Ilocos Sur.

Signal number 1 (30 to 60 kilometer per hour winds) was raised in the Calamian Group of Islands, Romblon, Camarines Norte, Isabela, Cagayan, Kalinga, Payao, Abra, and Ilocos Norte.(Philippine Daily Inquirer)

We need to be realistic not idealistic. Let us not be Socratic, shall we.

Dong Bran, as they say that there are many ways on how to kill a pig ,likewise there are many forms of protest on how to react on this present existing system...I think that people believe  their ideologist is based on reality, we cannot easily apply a theory which is not fit on a particular situation :)

Protest movements, shall we say is an obsolete way already but considering that its the only way that people can react and show their anger to the government, protest along the streets help a lot to awake our fellow citizen who remain deaf and blind of the issues in our society. As i said before that its the only way to show that people could no longer bear their worsening suffering and poverty. It has become apparent to them that their intensifying hardships are a direct consequence of the Arroyo regime's corruption. The increasingly dismal economic conditions of the broad masses of the people could no longer be obscured by the regime's falsified statistics and media hype about economic progress. The people's growing misery and oppression are increasingly being linked to the regime's reeking corruption.
The regime strains to cover up its heinous crimes by distorting laws, weaving lies, suppressing the mass media and perpetrating a host of other maneuvers and fascist measures. In spite of all this, various sectors, the organized masses, the mass media, church people, businessmen, lawyers , are determined to unravel and expose the truth about the regime's anomalies and corruption.
Generally, filipino people have reached the height of their anger and repudiation of the Arroyo regime. They are fed up with, and outraged at, the Arroyo regime's many cases of corruption and mendacity and the acute suffering and oppression it has inflicted on them. But yeah you are right, that the problem in here is not only on the leadership but its on the system itself, so this is the greatest dream of our very own people to build a new one that will totally serve the interest of the people specially the poor and  scrap this decayed existing system  in which we are trapped....
#1149
Yeah of course in every regime, there must be positive and negative side on it, yet we cant say that GMA is that worst, still we can appreciate some of her achievements  as being her excellency..but we must bear in mind that even how many president will sit on the throne yet we cannot expect that they can totally answer the demands of the people, but this regime i think is much worst than the rest..the Filipino people have long been suffering under her regime of intransigent puppetry, deceptions, corruption, anti-people socio-economic policies and repression. The people's conditions have critically worsened, its mendicant neoliberal, deregulatory and other pro-imperialist "globalization" policies and sellout of national and people's interests in collusion with big foreign, comprador and bureaucratic plunderers have resulted in the current series of rapid and sharp increases in the prices of fuel, power, food and other basic commodities and the ensuing increase in government tax collections.Rallies, marches,  cultural presentations,  and community meetings,  factory protests, transport strikes, noise barrages, boycotts and other forms of collective protest action are bound to spiral towards a generalized and nationwide protest movement as the Arroyo regime remains intransigent and continues to ignore the people's legitimate and just demands.Wherever life is most impoverished and miserable and the level of exploitation and oppression is escalating, the broad masses of the people are launching various forms of struggle, including militant mass protests..Then now how can we say that this regime is good enough..Yet people are longing to end up this anti people regime..despite of those huge peoples power but still she is strong enough to remain..now lets just hope and pray that one day she can realize how cruel she is and learn how to listen the woes and pains of our sovereign Filipino people before her term will ends...

Drilon, Legarda on Isnaji’s role: Maybe

Ces Drilon could not give a categorical reply when asked if Indanan Mayor Alvarez Isnaji had conspired with her kidnappers, as police officials have alleged.

Drilon talked to reporters before attending a thanksgiving Mass with her family, close friends and colleagues Thursday at Medical City hospital in Pasig City where she was confined.

“The mayor … maybe,” said Drilon.

Drilon said her suspicion was somehow roused after her abductors chose Isnaji as the main emissary when they previously said that they did not want a politician as a negotiator.

She said she found it confusing and asked them why they chose Isnaji.

“I said I thought no politician, but why the mayor?” she said.

Drilon said her kidnappers told her that they knew Isnaji and if he betrayed them, they could easily kill him or his family.

But she said she was somewhat torn and could not say she was convinced that Isnaji was behind her kidnapping.

“Personally, I can’t say,” she said.

“But there may be some evidence,” she said.

“Of course, we were successfully taken out from the clutches of those guys by his son, so it’s hard to judge,” Drilon said.

She also said that there were no tell-tale signs if Isnaji was a conspirator in her conversations with him. “I didn’t feel that.”

Drilon suspected that phone conversations between Isnaji and the kidnappers could have been tapped.

“So I’m hoping that [wiretaps] will stand in court if ever there was anything to suggest that he is a suspect through the conversations with the kidnappers,” Drilon said.

Mindanao State University Prof. Octavio Dinampo, who was kidnapped with Drilon, said Thursday in Zamboanga City that he could not believe that Isnaji had been arrested in connection with the abduction.

“I think it is very unfair,” Dinampo told reporters. “Mayor Isnaji and his son were just like anybody else who wanted to help us get out of there. Their becoming suspects is really unfair.”

Temojen Tulawie, provincial chair of the Consortium of Bangsamoro Society in Sulu, expressed surprise at the turn of events.

“We are appealing for the immediate and safe release of the mayor and his son,” said Tulawie.

In an interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer on Wednesday, Sen. Loren Legarda, who played a key role in the negotiations, disclosed that “from the beginning he (Isnaji) was suspected already, that’s why he was withdrawing (as a negotiator).”

“But assuming that he’s not completely clean, he was a necessary cog,” Legarda then said.

The senator said Isnaji was “crucial” to the talks and that he “knew how to use his position.” Somebody, she said, just “needed to focus and tell him what to do.”( Inquirer Mindanao)

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE 3) The family of a television reporter who was abducted by alleged members of the Abu Sayyaf paid P5 million to her captors although only P2 million reached them, police and justice officials disclosed Friday.

In separate press conferences, Philippine National Police Chief Avelino Razon and Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said that the family of ABS-CBN’s Ces Drilon gave the ransom to Indanan Mayor Alvarez Isnaji, who was negotiating for her release, along with her crew and a professor, after they were abducted last June 8 in Sulu.

The kidnappers initially demanded a P15-million ransom.

"The initial payment was P5 million, however P2 million lang naibigay sa [only P2 million was given to the] kidnap for ransom group and the P3 million was kept by Mayor Isnaji," said Razon.

The PNP Chief also showed media pictures of the money being counted in Isnaji’s house in Indanan. Together in the picture were Alvarez, his son Haider, Sulu Vice Governor Lady Ann Sahidulah and Superintendent Winnie Quidato.

Citing accounts by witnesses whom he did not name, Gonzalez affirmed Razon’s statement that Isnaji allegedly pocketed P3 million and gave the balance to the abductors.

But Gonzalez also disclosed that aside from the P5 million that was given by Drilon’s family, another P15 million was paid to the kidnappers.

He said the money, which was inside a duffel bag, was delivered to the Orchid Hotel in Zamboanga via Negros Air Express Company, owned by the Lopezes of ABS-CBN.

Gonzalez said this was revealed to him by Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno whom INQUIRER.net could not reach for comment as of posting time.

Razon confirmed that there was another demand for P15 million but said that whether this was met would be the subject of further investigation.

Razon said that based on intelligence information gathered, the leader of the kidnap gang was identified as “Larin-Larin,” an alleged alias of Isnaji.

Gonzalez confirmed this, saying it was former Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Nur Misuari who identified “Larin-Larin” as Mayor Isnaji, being a member of the Moro National Liberation Front’s (MNLF’s) central committee that signed the peace agreement in 1996.

Gonzalez said during the debriefing of the victims, they claimed that they heard their abductors mention "Larin-Larin."

Razon said Quidato, an intelligence officer, was sent to Jolo to work “undercover” and managed to penetrate the party of Isnaji.

Razon said Quidato had “first hand personal knowledge” of the delivery of the P5-million ransom delivered to Isnaji and the delivery of the P2-million cut to Drilon’s kidnappers.

Sahidulah, on the hand, could be called in as a witness.

The P5 million was delivered to Isnaji by Frank Oreña, brother of the broadcaster, and was delivered just before Valderama was released.

Chief Superintendent Raul Castañeda, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief, also noted the inconsistencies in Isnaji’s statements.

Castañeda cited that in a previous media interview Isnaji mentioned a P100,000 “board and lodging fee” that was given to the kidnappers in exchange for the release of Valderama, one of two cameramen of Drilon, but which the mayor never mentioned during the interrogation.

Isnaji and his son were charged with kidnap for ransom at inquest proceedings at the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group office at the PNP that began late Thursday and ended early Friday.(INQUIRER.net)

Indanan Mayor Alvarez Isnaji’s son, Haider, and Sulu Vice Governor Lady Ann Sahidula, look at the ransom money given by the family of TV reporter Ces Drilon to her captors in exchange for her release, along with her crew, and their guide. Seated in a yellow shirt and vest is the elder Isnaji. The photo is among the pieces of evidence presented by PNP Chief Avelino Razon to media Friday as proof of their claim that the Isnajis were accomplices of the kidnappers, identified as alleged members of the Abu Sayyaf. Razon also claims that Mayor Isnaji pocketed P3 million of the P5 million ransom.

Philippine Daily News / Teener dies in rape try
June 19, 2008, 08:16:38 PM
CEBU CITY, Philippines - A wood dealer faces murder charges after he pushed a 15-year old girl off a cliff in Sitio (district) Parian, Barangay (village) San Sebastian, Samboan town, north Cebu last Saturday afternoon.

Senior Police Officer 1 Eneberto Gutana of the Samboan municipal police precinct said they arrested the suspect, Demosthenes Mirasol, at his home in Barangay Inadlay, Santander town on Tuesday morning.

Mirasol was identified by a deaf mute as the one responsible for the death of Myrish May Potil, a fourth-year high school student and resident of Samboan.

Potil's remains were found in an area 10 to 15 meters down a cliff.

The site is 300 meters away from her home.

Police said the witness recounted to them that Potil was on her way home after visiting her classmate's house for a school project.

Mirasol met her along the road at 2 p.m. and tried to rape her.

The victim fought back and the suspect hit her on the head with a rock.

When the suspect saw that she looked dead, he threw her down the cliff.

Samboan medico-legal officer Dr. Teresita Bucado said autopsy results showed the victim sustained a severe head injury.

Gutana said the victim's parents looked for her after she failed to come home that afternoon.

On reaching the site they saw the victim’s slippers and folder that was stained with blood sometime before 10 p.m. that same day.

Mirasol is now detained at the Samboan precinct.(Cebu Daily News)

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"A Catholic priest from Dipolog City has been sanctioned and restricted to the convent for alleged sexual misconduct while serving in a United States parish.

Bishop Jose Manguiran of the Diocese of Dipolog has revoked the priestly offices and functions of Fr. Reynaldo M. Pardillada, 37, who is accused of having an illicit affair with a married Filipina while serving at the Epiphany Church in Cliffside Park, New Jersey.

Pardillada was last week expelled by the Archbishop of Newark after the New Jersey-based 32-year-old Filipino woman, who also happened to be from Dipolog, reported the affair to church authorities.

The woman complained of suffering emotional and physical abuse at the hands of Pardillada whom she first met as a visiting balikbayan in Dipolog in November 2005.

She said she finally summoned the courage to complain against Pardillada when he got her pregnant twice and forced her to abort the babies. She said she also suffered one miscarriage.

In an interview posted at the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website, Manguiran said he was imposing sanctions on Pardillada and restricting him to the church convent in Dipolog.

The Dipolog bishop said he has written to the Newark Archbishop apologizing for Pardillada’s conduct.

Before being transferred to the Archdiocese of Newark, Pardillada was assigned for more than a year as a “formator” at the Saint Mary’s Seminary in Gango, Ozamiz City.(Philippine Daily Inquirer)

MANILA, Philippines â€" (UPDATE) A “sobering experience” was how a television reporter who was freed late Tuesday night by her Abu Sayyaf captors described her nine-day ordeal as she thanked friends and colleagues who prayed for her and apologized to her network for causing a “headache.”

In a press conference after arriving in Manila from Zamboanga City Wednesday, ABS-CBN’s Ces Drilon expressed relief anew at her safe release and that of her cameramen, Jimmy Encarnacion and Angelo Valderama, who was abducted with her last June 8, along with Octavio Dinampo, Mindanao State University professor.

But at the same time, Drilon admitted that she had been stubborn and ignored warnings about the danger that she was putting herself and her crew into.

She also said that ABS-CBN only knew “to a certain extent” what story she was pursuing in Mindanao.

"I want to make it clear na [that] my office to a certain extent knew what my story was. [But] may mga [there were] instructions na sinuway ko kasi naging matigas ulo ko [that I ignored because I was stubborn] at one point and I disregarded some warnings. I put the lives of my team in danger, it was a sobering experience," Drilon said upon her arrival shortly after 2 p.m. at the domestic airport.

She also apologized to Encarnacion and Valderama, saying being part of the team, she felt a sense of accountability if anything had happened to them.

"I would like to extend my deepest apologies because as a reporter and my team, I am accountable if anything would happen to them, first to Angel, and then to Jimmy who was about to be beheaded,” said Drilon in Filipino.

Drilon was quoted as telling Legarda in reports that Encarnacion was about to be beheaded at one point during their captivity.

But Drilon said through it all, “we remained solid, we did not blame each other, and we were strong.”

At one point in the press conference, Drilon broke down and cried as she recounted her ordeal. But she added that they were "generally" treated well although they were tied at one point.

She also apologized to her children, mother, brother, sister, and to Encarnacion’s children, saying she felt “so irresponsible.”

Drilon reiterated her appreciation to friends and colleagues, especially to Senator Loren Legarda, whom she described as her “lifeline” because it was the lawmaker that had sought her “unconditional release” from her abductors who initially demanded a P15 million ransom.

Drilon also thanked Indanan Mayor Alvarez Isnaji and his son Jun, who had negotiated with the kidnappers from day one.

Drilon admitted that she had no inkling that she would be kidnapped and alleged that someone had betrayed her. She however refused to elaborate because she said she was cooperating with the police in their investigation.

"Thank you for the prayers...and to my ABS-CBN family, sorry if I caused you a headache," Drilon said in Filipino during an interview in Zamboanga City earlier Wednesday.(Inquirer.net)

MANILA, Philippines -- A newborn girl was killed after she was thrown out of a condominium window in Binondo, Manila Tuesday noon, a police official said.

Superintendent Nelson Yabut, Station 11 chief, said bystanders heard a loud thud on the roof of the Goldrich condominium's first floor around noon and were surprised to see a newborn baby girl.

"Nakita sa bubong yung baby, may placenta pa [The baby was seen on the roof and even had placenta," said Yabut in a phone interview.

He said they are still determining which floor the baby was thrown from.

Police suspect the infant’s own mother was responsible for her death and are now questioning condominium residents about whether they saw a pregnant woman in the area.

Bystanders tried to save the baby, rushing her to the Gat Andres Bonifacio, where she was, however, declared dead on arrival.

"The baby died of hematoma, mostly on the left side of her head," said Yabut.(INQUIRER.net)

World Daily News / Night of Terror, Heroism
June 13, 2008, 04:27:12 AM
Boy Scouts who survived the deadly tornado that killed four and injured 48 described the experience as living through hell, as government officials Thursday hailed the boys as heroes.

"I've been to hell and back," a dirtied Alex Robertson told FOX affiliate KPTM-TV as he described fleeing the tornado that touched down at the Little Sioux Scout Camp in western Iowa Wednesday evening.
Alex was among the Scouts who immediately began to help the injured.

"They're real heroes, these young men," Iowa Gov. Chet Culver said Thursday. "These camp directors and these youth counselors and others ... literally saved lives during this time period when emergency management couldn't get to them."

Lloyd Roitstein, an executive with the Mid America Council of the Boy Scouts of America, reminded reporters Thursday that the Boy Scouts motto is "Be Prepared."
"The day before the tornado hit, they [the Scouts] had emergency training, they knew what to do, they knew where to go and they performed well," Roitstein said. "We had excellent leadership out there."

Iowa rescue workers cut through downed branches and dug through debris amid rain and lightning Wednesday night to reach the camp where the 93 boys, ages 13 to 18, and 25 staff members were attending a weeklong leadership training camp.

On Thursday officials identified the dead Scouts as Aaron Eilerts, 14, of Eagle Grove, Iowa; Josh Fennen, 13, of Omaha, Neb.; Sam Thomsen, 13, of Omaha, Neb.; Ben Petrzilka, 14, of Omaha, Neb.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff toured the flattened campsite Thursday, telling reporters it looked as though a bowling ball had struck trees down like bowling pins.

"This has been a remarkable onslaught of weather, everything from flooding, unbelievable rain and of course tornados all descending at once," Chertoff said. "And I think everybody had to be particularly touched by the thought of the finest young people from this region being caught up in a tornado which struck them like a bowling ball, and against which they had no chance."

At least 42 of the injured remained hospitalized Thursday morning, with everything from cuts and bruises to major head trauma, said Gene Meyer, Iowa's public safety commissioner. At least four of the injured were airlifted from the camp, he said, refusing to elaborate on their conditions or identify the dead.

Roitstein said a tornado siren went off at the camp, but the Scouts already had taken cover before the siren sounded. The tornado hit at about 6:35 p.m. Wednesday.

Alex told KPTM-TV that he ran to a shelter in the nick of time, telling reporters he recorded what he thought would be his last words in his camera as he ran. "If anybody found this, [I said] 'I was Alex Robertson, troop guide for the Red Hawks,' and that was it. I didn’t have time for much else."

He credited his dive into the shelter door as saving his life.

"The door kicked in, the roof picked up, the walls started going and I was dragged off to the far wall before it got kicked away," he said. "The chimney fell and then the tornado passed about two minutes after that."

The boys had been in two groups when the storm hit the ranch in the remote Loess Hills. One group managed to take shelter, while the other was out hiking.

All the Scouts and staff were accounted for, Meyer said, adding that searchers were making another pass through the grounds to make sure no one else was injured. The camp was destroyed.

Scout supervisor Thomas White said he dug through the wreckage of a collapsed fireplace to reach victims in a building where many Scouts had been seeking shelter when the twister struck.

"A bunch of us got together and started undoing the rubble from the fireplace and stuff and waiting for the first responders," White told KMTV-TV in Omaha. "They were under the tables and stuff and on their knees, but they had no chance."

His father, Joel White, jumped in his truck at home in Blair, Neb., to find his son. "We're just hoping and praying it wasn't him," he told FOX News. "We didn't want it to be anybody. We just didn't know."
Click here to read about the parents' search for their Scouts.  http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,365848,00.html
The nearest tornado siren, in nearby Blencoe, sounded only briefly after the storm cut power to the town, said Russ Lawrenson of the Mondamin Fire Department.

Taylor Willoughby, 13, said several Scouts had been getting ready to watch a movie when someone screamed that there was a tornado. Everyone hunkered down, he said, and windows shattered.

"It sounded like a jet that was flying by really close," Taylor told NBC's "Today" on Thursday. "I was hoping that we all made it out OK. I was afraid for my life."

Ethan Hession, also 13, said he crawled under a table with his friend.

"I just remember looking over at my friend, and all of a sudden he just says to me, 'Dear God, save us,"' he told "Today." "Then I just closed my eyes and all of a sudden it's [the tornado] gone."

Ethan said the Scouts' first-aid training immediately compelled them to act.

"We knew that we need to place tourniquets on wounds that were bleeding too much. We knew we need to apply pressure and gauze. We had first-aid kits; we had everything," he said.

Ethan said one staff member took off his shirt and put it on someone who was bleeding to apply pressure and gauze. Other Scouts started digging people out of the rubble, he said.

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman told FOX News that the young Scouts quick action was heroic.

"As soon as it hit and it was out of the area, the Scouts were immediately checking their fellow Scouts, their pulse, to see if they were still alive, what they could do to assist," he told FOX News. "So they make us all proud."

The injured were taken to Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Alegent Health Clinic in Missouri Valley and Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.

Burgess spokeswoman Beth Frangedakis said 19 victims arrived at the hospital around 8:30 p.m. They included children ages 2 months to 15 years, plus three adults.

Frangedakis said four were admitted to the hospital, one was taken by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa, and the others were released. She wouldn't release the nature of the victims' injuries.

David Hunt, chairman of the Mid-America Boy Scout Council's Goldenrod District, which covers several eastern Nebraska counties, said he believed the boys were from eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.

The 1,800-acre ranch about 40 miles north of Omaha includes hiking trails through narrow valleys and over steep hills, a 15-acre lake and a rifle range.

The tornado touched down as Iowa's eastern half grappled with flooding in several cities. The storm threatened to stretch Iowa's emergency response teams even further.

Iowa Homeland Security spokeswoman Julie Tack said officials were confident the state's emergency response teams could handle the crisis because western Iowa had been largely unaffected by the recent flooding.( The Foxnews.com)

MANILA, Philippines -- An alleged assailant was killed while seven others, including a top aide of Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, were hurt during an ambush in Quezon City Thursday night, police said.

The group of lawyer Rafaelito Garayblas, secretary of Mayor Lim, was waylaid around 7 p.m. along Araneta Ave., in Quezon City, said Superintendent Franklin Mabanag, chief of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation Division.

Garayblas’ son, who was with him during the attack, was in critical condition, a Manila City Hall source said. Five other companions of Garayblas were injured.

They were attacked by two men riding in tandem on a motorcycle with plate number 344 ND, Mabanag said.

One of the assailants, identified only as Abasola, died during a gunfight that ensued, he said.

Police were eyeing the possibility the attack was work-related, Mabanag added. ( Philippine Daily Inquirer )

MANILA, Philippines -- A 35-year-old taxi driver stabbed dead late Wednesday afternoon a fellow driver whom he allegedly caught in the act of having sex with his wife inside their own home in Quezon City.

Leonardo Villamil, a resident of the village of Pagasa, in North Triangle, immediately surrendered to the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU) and confessed to killing Rodolfo Almandres Jr., 39, of Antipolo City.

Police Officer 2 Gregorio Maramag Jr. of the QCPD-CIDU said that the incident happened at around 4 p.m. Wednesday inside the suspect's house.

Maramag said that before the incident, Villamil arrived from work and was sleeping inside his bedroom when he heard his wife entertaining a visitor in the living room.

Villamil claimed he peeked into the living room to see who the visitor was and saw Almandres and his wife kissing, Maramag said. He then pretended to be asleep when his wife broke away from Almandres, reportedly to check if he was deep in slumber.

Several minutes later, Villamil heard the sounds of lovemaking from the living room and when he peered from behind the door, he discovered his naked wife having sex with Almandres.

Enraged by the scene, Villamil ran to the kitchen to get a knife and stabbed Almandres in the chest. The wife brought the victim to the East Avenue Medical Center, where Almandres was declared dead on arrival.

Villamil is in the custody of the QCPD-CIDU pending the filing of a homicide charge against him.(Philippine Daily Inquirer)

JOLO, Philippines--One of three TV journalists abducted by suspected Moro extremists was freed after five days in captivity in the southern Philippines late Thursday, and an official said a P2-million “board and lodging fee” was paid.

ABS-CBN cameraman Angelo Valderama was released around 7:30 p.m. to Sulu Vice Governor Lady Ann Sahidula, said Undersecretary Amilasan Amilbajar of the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Mindanao.

But prominent anchorwoman Ces Drilon and cameraman Jimmy Encarnacion were still in captivity, along with a Mindanao State University professor who had acted as their local guide.

”This is a positive development,” Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao police chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao told INQUIRER.net. “We're happy even if one person only [has been released]."

From Sahidula, Valderama was brought to the home of Indanan town mayor Isnaji Alvarez, the chief negotiator, in Sulu around 9:30 p.m., Goltiao said.

Amilbajar said a P2-million "board and lodging fee" was paid in exchange for his freedom.

"These funds came from the two negotiators. These funds are their campaign funds," Amilbajar said.

"He looked okay, but he would be given a [medical] check-up," he said.

Alvarez said in a telephone interview that the kidnappers told him Valderama was being set free as a "gift."

The freed hostage told Alvarez that his two colleagues and professor Octavio Dinampo remained with the kidnappers and were unharmed.

Goltiao said a “middleman” fetched Valderama at an undisclosed location before he was brought to Alvarez’s residence.

Valderama is now under the protective custody of the Philippine National Police and will be presented to Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno on Friday, said Goltiao.

The kidnappers, described as members of the Abu Sayyaf group that has been blamed for the worst terrorist attacks in the Philippines, were understood to have demanded up to P20 million ($454,000) in ransom.

The four were abducted on Sunday as they were heading to interview some Abu Sayyaf leaders.

In a phone interview, Lieutenant General Nelson Allaga, chief of the Armed Forces Western Mindanao Command, said Valderama would be turned over to Major General Juancho Sabban, chief of the counter-terrorism unit Task Force Comet, at Camp Teodulfo Bautista in the provincial capital of Jolo.

“A while ago, they were on their way, Valderama was being transported,” Allaga said, adding he last talked to Sabban before 11 p.m. Thursday.

“This is unexpected. At least, they heeded the plea to free at least one of the captives,” Sahidula, one of the negotiators, said in an interview with reporters, aired on a late-night newscast.

Alvarez had earlier told reporters he had spoken with Drilon by telephone on Wednesday night.

ABS-CBN said Wednesday in a statement that it would abide by its policy of not paying ransoms, so as not to "embolden kidnap-for-ransom groups to abduct other journalists, putting more lives at risk."

Unconfirmed reports said the local guide may have suffered a "mild" stroke.

Meanwhile, on the nearby island of Basilan, Muslim extremists kidnapped two Philippine Marines on Thursday and were demanding the release of detained Abu Sayyaf militant Sali Dungkal Alih in exchange, the military said.

Security forces arrested Alih in Basilan on May 6.

"They are offering us a concession -- give us the liberty of Alih and then we will release the Marines," said Philippine Navy spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Edgard Arevalo.

Arevalo said the government was sticking to its position of not giving in to such demands.( INQUIRER.net,)

OSLO -- Norway's parliament on Wednesday adopted a new marriage law that allows homosexuals to marry and adopt children and permits lesbians to be artificially inseminated.

After a heated debate, the members of parliament adopted the text by a vote of 84 to 41.

The three center-left coalition parties in power and two opposition parties, the Conservatives and the Liberals, voted largely in favor of the law, while the Christian Democrats and the far-right Progress Party voted against it.

Norway thus became the sixth country in the world to grant homosexuals the right to marry on an equal footing with heterosexuals, according to Norwegian television TV2.

"This decision is of an importance comparable to universal suffrage and our law on parity," Labour Party rapporteur Gunn Karin Gjul said during the debate.

The most controversial part of the law is that which gives lesbians the right to be artificially inseminated. The sperm donor must be identified so that the child can seek out his or her biological father at the age of 18.

"We are now creating a system where the father is reduced to a sperm sample," lamented Ulf Erik Knudsen, a member of the far-right.

Outside the parliament, a handful of opponents protested with posters reading "Have fathers become superfluous?" and "Parliament has no mandate to change the laws of nature."

Among other things, the new legislation replaces a so-called "partnership law" adopted in 1993 which gave Norwegian homosexuals the right to civil unions.

Health care workers who do not want to perform artificial inseminations on lesbians because of their personal convictions will not be under any obligation to carry out the procedure.

The new law is expected to enter into force at the end of this year or early next year.

Homosexuality was illegal until 1972 in Norway, a country which has since become one of the most liberal in the world in the field.(Inquirer.net)

ZAMBOANGA CITYâ€"A team of Tausug leaders is negotiating with Moro bandits for the release of broadcast journalist Ces Drilon of ABS-CBN and her two cameramen who were abducted along with their guide in Maimbung, Sulu, on Sunday.

Senior Supt. Julasirim Kasim, police chief of Sulu, confirmed to the Philippine Daily Inquirer (parent company of INQUIRER.net) that a negotiating team composed of “well-meaning personsâ€"leaders and influential” had been formed. But he refused to name its members.

“These are leaders of Sulu. They can talk and negotiate with the kidnappers … and they can receive feelers so we can get good reports regarding the situation of the captives,” Kasim said.

He said the team had been given seven days to make contact with the kidnappers: “In a week’s time, dapat may good news sila.”

The captives have been transferred to another armed group in Mount Tumatangis in Indanan town, according to Kasim.

“We were informed that Ces’ group was brought to Tumatangis at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday. We made the confirmation at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday when I went to Maimbung,” Kasim said.

Drilon, her cameramen Jimmy Encarnacion and Angelo Valderama, and their guide, Mindanao State University Prof. Octavio Dinampo, were abducted in Barangay Labbah in Maimbung by a group of armed men led by Gafur Jumdail, purportedly of the Moro National Liberation Front’s Misuari breakaway group.

Police reported on Tuesday that the captives were brought to the Karawan Complex in the middle of the towns of Maimbung, Indanan, Patikul, Parang and Talipao.

Merged group

But Kasim Wednesday cited reports saying that the captives had been taken to Indanan and were now with armed men led by Albader Parad, purportedly of the Abu Sayyaf.

Kanain Isnaji, executive secretary of Indanan Mayor Isnaji Alvarez, also confirmed receiving such reports, but said Jumdail and Parad belonged to the same group.

Military and police sources say the abduction was carried out by the Abu Sayyaf which had been involved in previous high-profile kidnappings.

“They (Jumbail and Parad) just merged to share resources,” Isnaji said.

The captives’ transfer to another location was probably to make them “feel quite comfortable,” Kasim said.

“In the Karawan Complex, there is no water. In Tumatangis, they have water, food,” he said.

But Sulu Rep. Yusop Jikiri saw the transfer of the captives from one group to another as a bad sign.

“That’s not good, and it’s even worse if ABS-CBN is directly talking to the kidnappers,” he said.

Jikiri worked for the safe release of GMA-7 reporter Carlo Lorenzo and his cameraman Gilbert Ordiales six days after their abduction in 2002.

“We sought the approval of GMA-7, the national government and the military for local officials to deal with the kidnappers,” he said.

As negotiator and Sulu governor at that time, Jikiri did not allow GMA-7 management to deal directly with the kidnappers. Even soldiers of Task Force Comet were ordered to stay away from the area where Lorenzo and Ordiales were being held.

Not a good sign

“What I observed is that ABS-CBN is directly [involved] in the negotiation, and it’s not a good sign. It may invite more groups to [take part in the ransom],” Jikiri said.

“ABS-CBN should have tapped a trusted leader here who is also acceptable to lawless groups or kidnappers,” he said.

Another piece of unsolicited advice from Jikiri: “Never ever deploy Marines near the kidnappers’ suspected lair. If they do that, they [eliminate] any possible line of communication. The presence of civilians or villagers is a great help in the negotiation. Civilian residents are afraid of soldiers.”

Maimbung Mayor Najib Maldisa said a number of his constituents had expressed willingness to help find the captives.

“Some residents have volunteered to help locate Drilon and her crew, but I advised them to first locate the driver who, until now, is still at large,” Maldisa said.

The mayor was referring to the driver of the Tamaraw pickup that Drilon and company were riding in when abducted on Sunday.

The driver and a dispatcher were also taken captive but were released on Monday morning, Maldisa had said earlier.

Dinampo as ‘suspect’

Kasim said Professor Dinampo was still not being considered a victim “because we got reports he was already released along with the driver known only as ‘Maming.’”

But Kasim admitted that police still could not locate the driver, the dispatcher and Dinampo, if indeed he had been released.

(Mayor Maldisa had said earlier that Dinampo was not released along with the driver and dispatcher.)

But even if he is still with Drilon and her crew, Dinampo “remains a suspect,” Kasim said. “This professor knows the situation in the area, so how come he has to bring Madam Ces? What’s his motive?”

Fatma Dinampo, the professor’s daughter, said the police should explain why her father had become a suspect.

“My father is not a bad person. So many peace groups have expressed concern over his fate. We don’t have money for ransom,” Fatma said, adding:

“What do they want to prove? What is their motive against my dad?”

Congressman Jikiri vouched for Dinampo’s integrity, saying the professor was a credible peace advocate and was responsible for the resolution of conflict among warring clans and families.

“He is a respected educator, a man of peace, but he has no deep understanding of the culture [of the Abu Sayyaf] because he has never been a combatant,” Jikiri said.

‘Victim-blaming’

The lawmaker said that like Drilon, Dinampo was a victim.

“The difference is that Drilon is prominent and Dinampo is not because he is a native of Sulu,” Jikiri said.

Lawyer Mary Ann Arnado, secretary general of the Mindanao People’s Caucus which Dinampo heads, dismissed the report that he had been released.

“We find this report very disturbing and can only complicate an already confusing situation,” said Arnado, who called on “all law enforcers and our leaders to avoid victim-blaming.”

“Obviously, this [victim-blaming] will not expedite the release of the kidnap victims,” she said.

The Citizen’s Peace Watch (CPW), a coalition of about 20 non-government organizations working for peace nationwide, expressed concern over suggestions that Dinampo could be part of the plan to kidnap Drilon and her crew.

“Very little is known about what has happened. And yet, even as the lives of Professor Dinampo and the others are on the line, insinuations about his role in this incident have reached our attention. Some security officials seem to be more concerned about blaming rather than saving the victims,” said Herbert Docena of Focus Global, a CPW member.

Docena said he and his colleagues knew Dinampo as “a respected academic and concerned citizen who has been tirelessly campaigning for peace in Mindanao and in the country.”

Said Fr. Angel Calvo, convenor of the Peace Advocate Zamboanga (PAZ): “We are very concerned that some of our friends in the media have fallen for the line that Drilon, Encarnacion and Valderama are the only ones kidnapped, reinforcing the PNP’s insinuation that Professor Octa could be part of the kidnappers.”

Network policy

In Manila, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp. said it would not pay ransom in exchange for the release of Drilon and her crew.

The network said in a statement released Wednesday afternoon that it would “abide by its policy not to pay ransom because this would embolden kidnap-for-ransom groups to abduct other journalists, putting more lives at risk.”

After initially saying that the disappearance of Drilon and her crew was a “missing persons” case, the network admitted that the three were kidnap-for-ransom victims.

“ABS-CBN is doing everything it can to help the families of its kidnapped journalists through this harrowing ordeal … We ask the nation for your prayers and request colleagues in media to join [us] in condemning this unconscionable attack against journalists,” the network said.

(According to an Agence France-Presse report, the Abu Sayyaf bandits who kidnapped ABS-CBN staffers Val Cuenca and Maan Macapagal in July 2000 were paid P6 million in exchange for the latter’s release.)

Chief Supt. Nicanor Bartolome, spokesperson of the Philippine National Police, confirmed that talks were being conducted for the release of the captives.

“There are negotiations ongoing,” Bartolome told reporters in Camp Crame. He declined to elaborate except to say that the negotiators had “a good grasp of the situation.”

Bartolome also said the term “negotiations” could mean many things, including inquiries as to the location of the captives.

He added that police were also trying to identify the group holding the ABS-CBN personnel, if indeed they were being held against their will.

But Bartolome stressed that the PNP was still treating the abduction as a “missing persons” case, and that no ransom demand had been received at press time.

“It is the policy of the government not to allow any ransom to be delivered to any group. We will continue to pursue this policy,” he said. With a report from Alcuin Papa in Manila.

A precise death toll continues to elude Sudanese officials following a fiery jet crash, and one reason could be that many passengers fled the scene after making it out of the wreckage.

Dozens of passengers reportedly were killed when the Sudan Airways jet en route from Jordan split in two and burst into flames after landing in thunderstorms and veering off a runway at an airport in the capital city of Khartoum, according to Sudanese officials and local media.

More than half of the 214 people on board were able to escape but authorities say it is still unclear how many died in the inferno.

The Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that at least 103 passengers and all 11 crew members survived, according to the Associated Press, but officials may have missed other survivors who went home directly after the crash.
The head of Sudanese police, Mohammad Najib, said bad weather had caused the crash, however, Youssef Ibrahim, director of the Khartoum airport, saying a technical problem was to blame.
An investigation was under way Wednesday to discover what caused the jet to veer off the runway.

The jet â€" which originated in Damascus, Syria, and was flying from Amman, Jordan â€" was landing in heavy rains and thunderstorms. The plane already had tried to land at the Khartoum Airport once, but wasn't able to due to the weather.

"We believe that most of the passengers were able to make it out and escape with their lives," said Najib, without disclosing further details on how they escaped.

He stressed that officials could not say exactly how many were killed, and it could take some time before a definitive cause and specific details of the crash are known.

Earlier reports put the death toll at 100, which would make it the deadliest crash since July 2007, when a Tam Linhas Aereas SA jetliner Airbus 320 skidded off runway while landing in Sao Paulo, Brazil, killing all 187 people on board and 12 on the ground.

Sudan has a poor aviation safety record. In May, a plane crash in a remote area of southern Sudan killed 24 people, including key members of the southern Sudanese government.

In July 2003, a Sudan Airways Boeing 737 en route from Port Sudan to Khartoum crashed soon after takeoff, killing all 115 people on board.

After that crash, Sudanese officials blamed sanctions for restricting vital aircraft parts. The U.S. State Department said there was no ban on equipment needed for aviation safety.

In 1997, then President Clinton issued an executive order barring the export of goods and technology to Sudan because of the country's "support for international terrorism, ongoing efforts to destabilize neighboring governments, and the prevalence of human rights violations."(The FoxNews.com)

Awit sa Bohol

(Lyrics in Boholano)
Yuta kong minahal
Hatag ni Bathala
Sa adlaw'g gabii
Taknang tanan
Dinasig sa
kinaiyahan
Sa mga bayani yutawhan
Imong kalinaw giampingan
Lungsod sa bungtod nga matunhaw
Ug matam-is nga kinampay

Puti ang kabaybayonan
Walog sa suba binisbisan
Bahandi ang dagat ug kapatagan
Gugma ang tuburan
Sa kagawasan sa tanan
Panalanginan ka
Ihalad ko lawas ug kalag
Sa mutya ko'ng Bohol

[edit] Bohol Hymn
(English version)
This is the land I love,
The land God gave to me,
Caressed by the sun,
Bathed by the sea,
And kissed by the cool breeze
Night and day.
Here’s where the early heroes lived,
Here’s where they wrought peace and here they bled,
Here rise the marvelous cone-shaped hills,
Here’s sweet kinampay grows.

Blessed with white sandy beaches,
Rivers that water valleys,
Seas teem with fishes and cows graze
on the plains,
In ev’ry home love reigns,
God keep my homeland always free,
Let her forever be,
I pledge my strength, my heart and soul,
To my dear home, Bohol

MANILA, Philippines -- Broadcast network ABS-CBN said on Wednesday that it is not paying any ransom for its news team, led by television reporter Ces Drilon, which was kidnapped in Sulu.

"ABS-CBN News will abide by its policy not to pay ransom because this would embolden kidnap for ransom groups to abduct other journalists, putting more lives at risk," the network said in a statement.

"ABS CBN News is doing everything it can help to help the families of its kidnapped journalists [get] through this harrowing ordeal," the statement added.

The statement was released shortly after Chief Superintendent Joel Goltiao, police director for the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), confirmed that negotiations had begun with the abductors of Drilon, cameramen Jimmy Encarnacion and Angelo Valderama, and their guide, Mindanao State University Professor Octavio Dinampong.

The group went missing in Sulu on Sunday after they were intercepted by an armed group along Kulasi, town of Maimbung.

Police say the abductors are members of the Abu Sayyaf led by Albader Parad and Gapur Jundain, the latter a former member of the Moro National Liberation Front who recently joined the group.

ABS-CBN also asked for prayers and requested other news organizations to "join ABS-CBN News in condemning this unconscionable attack against journalists."

Earlier Goltiao said there was a "great possibility" that the journalist would be freed, but would not say who was involved in the negotiations.

"Negotiations are being conducted," Goltiao said on radio. "There is a great possibility that we will obtain the release of Ces Drilon...but we cannot give an exact date."

Goltiao belied reports that the kidnappers are asking for between $227,000 and $454,000 for the hostages' safe release.

"We are on a no-ransom policy pero [but] during the negotiations, hindi maiwasan [it can’t be helped]," Goltiao told INQUIRER.net in a separate interview.

"We cannot comment much at this point but we are doing our best to recover safely Ces Drilon and her team," he said, noting that they have been receiving reports that Drilon and company are being moved around consistently.

Goltiao appealed to reporters not to come to Jolo to cover the Drilon kidnapping, saying, "We cannot safeguard them all, and they may enter unsecured areas without our knowledge, and what happened to Ces may happen to them."

The abduction of Drilon and her crew has been widely criticized by journalism groups both here and abroad.

"We hope that those who have abducted the journalists and their guide will hear the appeals being made on their behalf by many of the country's leading figures," said the international press group Reporters Without Borders.

The Paris-based media group said the Abu Sayyaf has been responsible for the kidnapping of more than 30 journalists over the years.

"Taking hostages is unacceptable. We call on all those could have any influence over the kidnappers to try to get Drilon and her colleagues released."

Goltiao also said Dinampo is now also considered a “victim.”

"We treat him [Dinampo] as a victim now because we cannot prove now that he is otherwise," said Goltiao.

Police said initially that they were eyeing Dinampo's links to the Abu Sayyaf, and the possibility that he lured the news team to the bandits.

"Based on the inputs we received, mukhang hindi niya alam [it looks like he didn’t know] about the kidnapping," Goltiao said.(Inquirer.net)

A senior Philippines religious leader Monday threatened to withhold communion to traders who hoard rice amid soaring prices in the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic Southeast Asian nation. The Philippines, one of the world’s largest importers of the staple grain, is struggling to build up stocks amid a rapid increase in prices in recent months. Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez of the southern diocese of Marbel on Mindanao island said he will talk to local businessmen to find out if they are withholding supplies to artificially jack up the prices.
Local press reports said that rice was now at least 50 percent more expensive in some areas of Mindanao compared to the rest of the country.

“I will talk to them in private and ask, ‘Why did you do that?’ I will ask him to defend and explain â€" then I will say, ‘You have to return what you have stolen plus the damage.’” Hoarders who comply will get absolution.“I will give him communion. If he will say ‘no,’ then I will say, ‘You will not receive communion because you’re the one excommunicating yourself. You don’t want to be united with Christ because you are exploiting the poor.’” The government says 23.5 million Filipinos â€" one-fourth of the population â€" earn 67 pesos (1.52 dollars) or less a day. A popular parish priest accused of sexual misconduct won’t be returning to his parish, but would be given a chance to say his final mass before departing for the Philippines. Reports say Rev. Edgardo Abano, 52, of St. Frances Cabrini Church in Piscataway is leaving the church, but would celebrate mass for the last time on June 8.

The website www.saveourpastor.org states that Abano’s 12 noon farewell mass will be held at the St. Frances Cabrini school gym followed by a farewell reception in the cafeteria. The website was created by his supporters in a bid to clear the pastor’s name. Abano, well loved in his parish, was arrested in October of 2007 on charges of sexual misconduct. A Filipino employee of the Metuchen diocese Glenn Obrero filed a complaint with his superiors in 2005 that Abano had repeatedly touched his chest and buttocks in the church rectory. Obrero, 26, was then a seminarian at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in New Jersey. Abano has denied the allegations. In October 2007, Abano was picked up by agents of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/ Child Abuse Unit and the Piscataway Police Department’s Special Victim’s Unit.

Since his arrest, Abano â€" who was ordained in 1985 in the U.S. -- has taken a leave of absence. He is free on $1,500 bail. St. Frances Cabrini is the fifth New Jersey parish he has served; he has been a priest there since 1992.   A jury that heard the testimonies of both Abano and Obrero in February this year returned a “no bill” verdict, which means they found no sufficient evidence for the prosecutor to file a case. This was based largely on revelations that the translation of a phone conversation between Abano and Obrero had some inconsistencies.

On the strength of this decision, Abano’s supporters within the parish as well as the Filipino American community have asked the diocese for his reinstatement. They have written letters to Bishop Paul Gregory Bootkoski of the Metuchen diocese expressing the hope that with the jury decision, Abano would be resuming his obligations as a parish priest.

Instead, they were surprised to learn that Abano won’t be returning to the parish and would be leaving the U.S. shortly after the June 8 mass.
“I would like everyone to know that Fr. Ed Abano is a man of great integrity and a wonderful pastor. He is a true servant of the Lord, a friend, a person who goes beyond the limit to help those in need. I for one will certainly rally in his defense and fight to the limit to keep him at SFC where he belongs to shepherd his flock. He has done nothing to warrant these allegations. We must all remember to keep ourselves focused on the fact that these are just allegations and must be proven false. He has been unjustly removed and our Bishop should stand behind him and give Fr. Ed his support and reinstate him back to his parish,” says one of the messages of support in the website.(PhilNews.com)

Alarmed by reports that retail price of rice in Mindanao markets has skyrocketed to as much as P60 per kilo, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez yesterday ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to resume its operations against suspected rice hoarders.

But the Department of Agriculture (DA), after a thorough investigation, has identified “speculative farmers” as the primary culprit of the surging rice prices in Mindanao.

“I have ordered the NBI to restart the campaign against hoarders. We sort of suspended this campaign before when the President said that we should concentrate on the diversion,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez admitted there were some unwanted repercussions when the Justice department initially started going after suspected rice hoarders.

He, however, was quick to argue that the country is having an excellent rice harvest and the apparent hoarding by unscrupulous traders brings about hiked prices of rice and shortage in the market.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) earlier said it would look into reports that some officials of the National Food Authority (NFA) have colluded with some rice traders to repackage NFA rice and pass them off as expensive commercial rice.

Speaker Prospero Nograles, who represent the 1st District of Davao City, had asked the NBI to inspect warehouses and run after rice hoarders.

“We are the food basket and it’s impossible that our rice prices are high unless there is hoarding. We ought to file charges against rice hoarders,” Nograles said.

Hoarding is prohibited under the law since it is “an act of illegal price manipulation.” It carries a penalty of five to 15 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to P2 million.

The NBI has recently filed criminal charges before the DOJ against four provincial NFA officials in Region 10 and eight rice traders accused of diverting NFA rice to commercial rice trading in Mindanao.

NBI officials in Manila had alerted NBI authorities in Mindanao to “conduct raids” and “massive inspections” of all warehouses, especially in Davao Oriental, Davao del Norte, Tagum, Digos and the Socsargen areas, where rice hoarding and rice diversion of NFA is prevalent.

Two teams from Manila are scheduled to leave for Mindanao’s Region 10, 11 and 12 where these areas are located.

“We believe that NFA rice is being hoarded and diverted (in these areas) for commercial rice trading,” said Regional Director Ricardo Diaz, of the NBI’s Deputy Director for Intelligence Services (DDIS).

Price speculation

But Agriculture Undersecretary Jesus Paras is singing a different tune.

In a briefing held at the Palace, Paras said the NFA has investigated the millers and warehouses in Mindanao, particularly in Davao, and established there was no rice hoarding.

During the investigation, it was ascertained that a lot of farmers in the region were holding on to their harvest in anticipation of a price increase during the lean months.

Paras explained that the harvest season is about to end and the price of rice is expected to move up because of the reduction in domestic supply.

While acknowledging that what the farmers were doing was considered as hoarding, Paras said the government could not do anything to stop this since they own the rice they harvest.

With the onset of the dry season, Paras said the selling price of rice could go up from the current P17 per kilogram to as high as P24/kg.

Paras explained that the rule of thumb as far as rice is concerned is that the selling price would be multiplied by two to get the retail price.

So at P24/kg, the retail price of rice would be P48/kg in the market.

He said the price of rice in the domestic market is not that high when compared to the prevailing prices in major rice-exporting countries such as Thailand, which sells at P45/kg and Vietnam at P59/kg.

In order to bring down the prices, Paras said the NFA has started infusing larger quantities of P18.25 and P25/kg rice in the market.

A significant amount was released in Davao since it serves as the biggest market in Mindanao.

The national government would also be providing fertilizer subsidies to the rice farmers in order to help cut down their costs and consequently bring down prices.

He expressed optimism that prices would stabilize next week when the cheap NFA rice becomes available to the masses.

Lump sum

Meanwhile, Senate President Manuel Villar called on Malacañang yesterday to release Mindanao’s 30 percent share of the lump sum funds of the P1.227-trillion budget for 2008.

Villar said there is a special provision in this year’s spending measure for Mindanao.

“The big question is: has this money been released, has Malacañang complied with this clear intent of the law. If this has been made available to Mindanao, food scarcity, and the rise in food prices, could have been avoided,” Villar said.

He explained that the 30-percent lump sum fund share of Mindanao is on top of the P121 billion that is programmed for national agencies and local governments in the island.

Villar said the lump sum fund is a block allocation for specific purpose and is outside the budget allocated for the operations of agencies in the 2008 national budget. Among the lump sum funds are the school building fund and the E-commerce fund.

“There is no reason for Mindanao to go hungry because it is blessed with natural assets and manpower, which makes agriculture a robust occupation in the area,” he said.

Villar lamented that only one in every 35 hectares of agricultural land in Mindanao is serviced by irrigation despite its being one of the biggest islands in the country. “This means only one in every six hectares of the irrigated land in the country can be found in Mindanao,” he added.

However, Villar recalled that despite these handicaps, Mindanao was able to produce P280-billion worth of agricultural products in 2005.

He said rice and corn yield in 2005 is 6.6 million metric tons. Fisheries output is 2 million metric tons annually.

“When it comes to rice and fish, Mindanao is more self sufficient and could feed its 23 million population,” said Villar.

The key is to unlock the full farming potential of the island, he added.

The Senate president also said the 4.3 million agriculture workers in Mindanao who form the backbone of the labor force can make the island truly a fruit basket.

As this developed, Sen. Loren Legarda stressed yesterday the need for the government to ensure equitable distribution of rice in all of the country’s regions to stabilize the staple’s price nationwide and not only in Luzon.

“It’s possible that too big a portion of the rice produced in Mindanao is being shipped to Luzon and the Visayas, thus leaving almost nothing for Mindanaoans,” Legarda said in a statement. ( The Phil. Headline News.com)

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) yesterday raised the alarm on the ballooning population of Filipino children aged 6 to 15 years old who are not enrolled in school.

Antonio Tinio, ACT chairperson, chided Education Secretary Jesli Lapus for giving a misleading picture of the dropout rate in the country by repeatedly saying that there are some 1 million out-of-school youths in the country.

“He is giving an unclear picture of the problem,” Tinio told The STAR. “He might be referring to the population of six-year-olds who are not in school.”

Tinio said that based on the Department of Education’s data, there are already about 3.3 million out-of-school youths in the country.

“This is a big number of children, aged six to 15 years old, who should be in school but are not getting an education,” Tinio said.

Tinio said the 3.3 million is 78 percent higher than that recorded in 2002.

Tinio accused DepEd of covering up the problem by releasing bloated enrollment projections for the new school year.

“DepEd press releases routinely claim that 21.66 million public and private school students will troop back to school this June. The actual figure, based on the DepEd’s own records, is closer to 19.5 million, where it’s been hovering since 2005,” Tinio revealed.

Tinio pointed out that even the National Economic and Development Authority has quietly acknowledged the worsening state of basic education.

Tinio said the “declining trends from 2002 to 2005 suggest an increased gap between performance and targets and low probability of achieving targets for 2010.”

“There were 1.86 million out-of-school children in 2002. This grew to 3.33 million in 2007. That’s an additional 1.46 million children forced out of school in just five years,” said Tinio.

“Providing universal access to basic education is one of the government’s fundamental obligations. No administration has presided over such a decline in enrollments as we’re seeing now. This is a huge blight on the Arroyo administration’s track record in education,” said Tinio.

ACT cited worsening poverty as the main factor behind the growing number of out-of-school children.

“This belies the government’s claims that economic growth is ‘trickling down’ to the poor. Students and parents most often cite lack of food or baon, transportation fare and the burden of school fees as the main reasons why they stop going to school or fail to enroll altogether,” said Tinio.

Claiming that the situation required “immediate and drastic intervention,” ACT called on the government to adopt strong measures to encourage more poor families to enroll and keep their children in school.

Among the measures the group proposed are the implementation of a genuine school feeding program, the establishment of free school bus or jeepney service in all schools, and the removal of all school fees.

ACT explained that the current DepEd policy regarding school fees is deceptive, since it prohibits the charging of miscellaneous fees only during the enrollment period, but allows it during the rest of the school year. WASHINGTON â€"  The Senate began what is expected to be a weeklong, contentious debate Monday over legislation to combat global warming by mandatory reductions in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

Senators voted 74-14 to proceed to the bill, but immediately it became clear Republican opponents were not going to make it easy. A request by Democrats to begin considering substantive changes in the bill was blocked by GOP opponents until Wednesday at the earliest.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada promised a thorough debate that will probably last through the week, if not longer. He said it's clear that "global warming is real" and Congress must act.

But supporters of the bill acknowledged it will be difficult â€" perhaps impossible â€" to overcome a certain GOP filibuster threat against the legislation, meaning congressional action on global warming will probably be decided in the next Congress and by the next president.

Many of the GOP senators who voted to debate the issue have said they are opposed to the bill.

The Senate measure, which has wide Democratic and some Republican support, would cap U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, cutting them by 18 percent by 2020 and by two-thirds by mid-century. It would specifically target refineries, power plants, factories and transportation for 70 percent reductions and make emissions allowances available to be traded in an open market.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., a chief architect of the 500-page bill, said at a news conference the urgency of taking action against climate change cannot be overstated, declaring, "It's about our children, about their children, and about the planet we've inherited."

Democratic leaders were ready to spend the week, and possibly more, on the legislation. But the tone of the debate emerged in the opening hours.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky called it "a giant tax on virtually every aspect of the economy," and accused Democrats of being "laughably out of touch" in taking up the bill when the country is reeling from $4 a gallon gasoline and other high energy costs.

President Bush said at a White House event that the measure amounted to "a huge spending bill fueled by tax increases" and that it "would impose roughly $6 trillion in new costs on the American economy."

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Bush would veto the bill as it stands, but said it seems unlikely the legislation will clear the Senate anyway.

The White House maintained the carbon limits would "impose a huge new tax" while demanding "drastic emission cuts that have no chance of being realized and have every chance of hurting our economy."

The bill would raise gasoline taxes by 53 cents a gallon by 2030, said the White House statement, a position ridiculed by the bill's sponsors. "People would be thrilled to have gas prices rise only 2 cents a year," declared Sen. Joe Lieberman, a Connecticut independent and co-sponsor of the legislation.

Alluding to carbon-intensive industries, such as most utility companies, Lieberman acknowledged "real resistance from people who don't want to change" and fear the shift away from fossil fuels. Getting 60 votes to overcome a filibuster is "going to be hard," he said.

Boxer said it was "misinformation and an untruth" to suggest that the climate legislation would impose new taxes or raise gasoline prices. The bill proposes using proceeds from the sale of carbon emission allowances to funnel $800 billion in tax relief, over 40 years, to people facing higher energy costs, she said.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., whose cosponsorship of the bill has been credited with bringing a scattering of GOP senators on board, also rejected the administration's prediction of economic chaos. "The president has the stick to bring back the throttle" and set new emission timetables if there are serious economic problems, he argued.

"The United States has to lead," Warner said at a press conference.

The bill's sponsors sought to blunt criticism over costs by including a pollution allowance trading system. The emissions allowances were projected to generate $6.7 trillion in revenue over 40 years.

The money would be used to ease the transition away from fossil fuels by spurring alternative energy technologies such as wind, solar and carbon-free nuclear power.

Environmentalists said the cost of inaction on global warming cannot be ignored.

"These costs (of doing nothing) dwarf the kind of costs that people are talking about from taking serious initiatives to do something about climate change," said Frank Ackerman, a Tufts University economist and co-author of a recent report on the potential economic impacts of global warming. He predicted huge annual economic costs by the end of this century from climate change, including water shortages in the West, rising sea level, increasingly intense hurricanes and even higher energy costs.( Associated Press)

ISLAMABAD -- Pakistani officials said Tuesday an attack on the Danish embassy was likely a one-off linked to cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed and will not impact the new government's talks with the Taliban.

Investigators believe Taliban militants based in a tribal region on the Afghan border were responsible for Monday's suicide attack, which killed at least six people including a Danish national, a government official said.

Police have found skull fragments at the scene which confirm that the bombing was a suicide attack, a tactic favored by Taliban rebels who have been blamed for a wave of blasts in Pakistan in the past year, officials said.

But the senior government official told Agence France-Presse on condition of anonymity: "It appears to be a one-off attack which has little relevance to the ongoing negotiations between Taliban and the authorities."

Pakistani Taliban militants agreed to peace talks with the government after parties allied to US-backed anti-terror ally President Pervez Musharraf were trounced in elections in February.

The United States, NATO and Afghanistan have all expressed doubts over the talks.

"This attack was not born out of the events in the country or the region, rather it was part of global outrage in the Islamic world against publishing blasphemous cartoons," the official said.

Danish newspapers first published the cartoons in 2005, sparking violent protests in Pakistan and other Muslim countries. Several dailies reprinted the sketches in February this year.

Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda extremist network has made recent calls for attacks on Danish targets because of the cartoons.

A spokesman for Pakistan's Taliban militants said on Monday that he had no information about the blast. He was not immediately available for comment on Tuesday.

The top Pakistani Taliban commander, Baitullah Mehsud, has denied any links to Al-Qaeda and accusations by the former government that he orchestrated the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto in December.

Security officials said a stolen car with fake diplomatic plates was used in the bombing.

The bomb contained at least 25 kilograms (55 pounds) of the same type of explosive used in a suicide bombing at the Federal Investigation Agency's offices in Lahore in March, which was blamed on the Taliban, they said.

The preparations for the Danish blast were "meticulous, similar to previous attacks by Taliban linked to Al-Qaeda" and involved a car stolen from the northwestern city of Peshawar, the security official said.

However the attack itself was "poorly executed" and the bomb went off several meters from the gate of the embassy, they said.

Security officials warned however that the attack showed the Taliban network remained intact and exposed the problems that lie ahead "in case of reopening of hostilities between the government and the militants."

A joint team of investigators has been set up, including of police, the special investigation unit of the Federal Intelligence Agency and Pakistani intelligence services, to probe the blast, the government official said.

One Danish citizen of Pakistani origin and two Pakistani employees were among the dead in the blast that badly damaged the embassy and the offices of a UN-backed aid agency, officials in Copenhagen said.

Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen slammed the bombing as a "horrible, cowardly crime," telling reporters that his government would not give in to terrorists and would maintain its foreign and security policies.

US President George W. Bush condemned the bombing and offered his condolences to the victims, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. Pakistan has been a key ally in Washington's "war on terror" since 2001.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon denounced the attack and "reiterates his total rejection of such acts of terrorism," his press office said in a statement.(Agence France-Presse)

MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) An overseas Filipino worker was killed and two compatriots injured in a mortar attack in Baghdad's Green Zone last Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Monday.

A report from charge d' affaires Wilfredo Cuyugan of the Philippine embassy in Iraq and Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Ricardo Endaya identified the slain Filipino as Jonasis Saguid, 32, of Paco Manila.

Saguid, who worked as a cook, sustained fatal injuries in Friday's attack inside the fortified US compound in the Iraqi capital.

“The remains of OFW Saguid are scheduled to arrive in Kuwait this afternoon and flown out of Kuwait on 3 June for the Philippines,” Foreign Affairs spokesman Claro Cristobal said in a text message.

Cristobal said the two other OFWs were injured in the attack but are now out of danger.

There was no immediate comment from the US military in Baghdad.

The Philippines has banned its citizens from going to Iraq to work, but the DFA said it was possible the victims entered Baghdad via other Middle East countries. (With Agence France-Presse)

What a very sweet dogs and cat of my friend..

A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.  :)

A good friend is a connection to life - a tie to the past, a road to the future, the key to sanity in a totally insane world.  :)

A friend can tell you things you don't want to tell yourself.

Nothing but heaven itself is better than a friend who is really a friend.

Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow ~ Don't walk behind me, I may not lead ~ Just lay beside me and be my friend. ;)

"When it hurts to look back, and you're scared to look ahead, you can look at your tiilan and your best friend will be there. "

Nagpi-ot na jud ta :D

Mamangon nalang ta oi kay pi-ut :D
