Ang tanong ng marami, who's in charge?

Dear Kuya Hubag Bohol,

Call me Tina.

Thanks a lot. -- Tina

Mahina pala kayong mag-isip.

Tira-Pasagad | Saksak-Sinagol / Ibang klaseng epal
November 14, 2012, 09:04:08 AM

Question and Answer / Nag-ulyanin na si opisyal
November 14, 2012, 08:45:42 AM

Contrary to common suspicion that taking too much of something might have a downside to it, study shows that oddly its not the same story for people who take Aspirin on a regular basis.

Although the effect may only be seen in the far future for some, taking Aspirin every other day for some people just meant sparing themselves from stomach and bowel cancers. Researchers from Harvard University found out that people, women in particular, who have been taking at least 100mg of pain killer tablets every other day are over 40 percent less at risk of these sort of cancers, after a couple decades that is. Although more tests are to be conducted by the research team to narrow down the specific demography to benefit this, they also warn not to start feeding on Aspirin regularly if not necessary as it also has adverse side-effects when taken recklessly.

General Topic / TIGHT ROPE - sandy's aftermath
November 13, 2012, 01:52:31 PM
We have seen on television and newspapers the devastation that hit New York and New Jersey as a result of TS Sandy that hit these states on October 29. The damage to property alone is estimated to run to US$21 billion but the cost to people in terms of trauma, personal losses and lost opportunities and work time is beyond estimation.

We gazed with wonder why New York’s crowded Queens was razed to the ground with only the statute of the Blessed Mother left standing, while concrete and steel structures around her crumbled into pieces. This picture was flashed all over the world and, indeed, we wondered and try to find meaning in this difficult to explain phenomenon.

We (at least in Luzon and Mindanao) have suffered similar if not worse fates of water and flood but the destruction wrought by TS Sandy, the total damage material and human affliction can never be truly quantified.

I wrote earlier that we escaped Tropical Storm Sandy by the skin of our teeth but, as we left, we kept on thinking of those who hosted us whom we have to leave behind. We could only watch and pray and trusted all things in God’s hands. We are grateful that our families there are unharmed, though not spared the inconveniences of the aftermath.

Nevertheless when power was restored they sent me their emails and I would like to share excerpts of it with our readers so they, too, would be able to see the human face of that devastation that hit us close to heart. I am certain that many have relatives there as well and must have already reported their experiences while the storm raged and the aftermath.

After the storm, my sister Ruth went to church. She described the scene:

“I felt like in the catacombs this evening at church. There is the Sanctuary Lamp, an Easter candle in the center aisle, six pillar candles on the communion rails, a parishioner holding a flashlight for the priest who is celebrating Mass! The church is so dark. The priest continued celebrating the anticipated Mass in spite of the darkness.

“This is still the situation in New Jersey and the Hudson County. Many more are without electric power. We are still not so sure what would be next as many businesses are closed, schools have not opened and hospitals are without electric power, transportation is limited, and the places you have left in New York looked like a sea/river.

“Jersey City is a mess. I have not ventured around yet but friends living in various places told me how they are doing … rotten.”

Indeed people had, in the words of a CNN reporter, to cope with the situation in the best way they could.

Ten days later, I received an answer on how the families cope with the unprecedented aftermath. My nephew, Wilfred and his wife Jeanette and their four children with one coming probably this month, had to huddle in one room to keep warm. At daytime, they went to Cabella’s in Pennsylvania, 91 kilometers away to spend the day.

This is the state’s most popular sports provider â€" fishing, hunting, etc. It is a huge building and at a high elevation. Hundreds from various states go there for their outdoor sports gear so that it has all the amenities of a good life and children love to stay there. At the end of the day, they would fill up their tank and head home where long lines of motorists waited for the rationed fuel.

Now that electricity has been restored in their area, Wil went to his children’s school to help clear it of debris and fallen trees. From what I learned of this private school, parents do volunteer work each week to help teach so that I imagine other parents were there as well.

My other nephew, Andrew and his wife Wendy and their children Agnes and Natalia were trapped by the fallen electric posts and trees. The roads were blocked so that, for days, they could not leave the house.

Drew was prepared. While we were there, he already stocked on food, checked the performance of his electric generator at the basement and saw to it that he had sufficient fuel. Thus while the neighborhood was in the dark, he had electricity and he and Wendy were able to continue their work via computers. Wendy works in New York and that was off and closed while Drew’s office was in New Jersey but he serves a worldwide clientele of their bank.

Nature seems to have not finished with these two states. After Sandy came the snow storm and that means freezing temperature for thousands until electricity was restored.

Against nature arrogant humans are helpless.*

Talk of the Town / Is Binay for Aquino or Arroyo?
November 13, 2012, 01:35:48 PM
‘For Aquino or Arroyo?’, that’s the challenge raised by the leaders of Liberal Party to Vice President Jejomar Binay last Tuesday, April 10.

VP Binay’s camp recently announced that his political party, Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), and Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino of ex-President Joseph Ejercito Estrada formed an alliance named United Nationalist Alliance (UNA). The UNA party will be top billed by some great senators and even the critics of the current administration. Budget Secretary Florencio ‘Butch’ Abad Jr and Cavite Representative Joseph E.A. Abaya challenged Binay to take a stand whether if UNA party will represent President Benigno Aquino III’s administration or the regime of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Now more than 2 years in the office, Philippine President Noynoy Aquino is slowly gaining a lot of thumbs up from the Filipino people. An interesting question about him is how is he when he is in action?

PNoy as he is fondly called is known as someone laid back but his inner circle will describe him as someone obsessed with details. He doesn’t easily trust a document unless it is duly signed by the head of the department involved. He remembers details like crazy and if he sees any inconsistencies, he doesn’t mince his words. His cabinet official will really get it if he sees any discrepancies especially in the figures. One of his officials describe the experience as ‘thesis defense.’ With a few more years in the office, PNoy with his work ethic and habit can definitely help the Philippines.

In alignment with Department of Tourism slogan ‘It’s more fun in the Philippines’, Pampanga’s 1st District Representative Carmela Lazatin requested Walt Disney Company via email to invest in our country by building another Disneyland Park in Clark, Pampanga.

The letter to Robert Iger, chairman and CEO of Walt Disney Company, from Lazatin includes the tax-free privileges given investors of Clark Freeport Zone within the 4,400 hectare main zone and 27,600 sub zone which is suitable to build a new Disneyland Park. The world-class Clark International Airport was also mentioned in the letter which serves as one of the main instrument in bringing tourist to the proposed Disneyland Park.

A truly amazing story unfolds of a girl who was raised in a shanty made of patches of scrap metal and wood who graduates Magna cum Laude, the second to the highest form of academic recognition in college, in Tiaong, Quezon. Sarah Tanduyan was motherless since age ten and her father's meager 200-peso per day income did not deter her to excel despite occassions where they couldn't pay for electric bills so she had to study with a tiny gas lamp.

Sarah credits her success to her father that served as her inspiration to study hard so she can someday raise him up from poverty. Her father who collects scraps of metal, bottles and other junks and for a living is very proud of his daughter's success.

Philippine Provinces / NO APOLOGIES! -- SOTTO
November 13, 2012, 01:23:18 PM

“Public apology? For what? That’s not true,” sabi pa ni Sotto.

Buwelta pa nito, “Ano ‘yan eh what do you call this, rehashed.

“I have not received official communication to that effect other than that ako pa magiging talking head nila para magkaroon sila ng news. Excuse me!,” anang senador.

“Hangga’t walang official, I will not make any comment.

Sa kumalat na sulat diumano ni Kerry Kennedy, isang bahagi nito ang nagsasabing, “I am particularly offended to see a speech my father gave in support of global human rights distorted by Senator Sotto as an argument against the right to contraception.”

Saklolo naman ni Se- nate President Juan Ponce Enrile kay Sotto, “We cannot be questioned for what we say inside this Chamber anywhere, not because we are a special breed but because that is the immunity given by the sovereign people so that we can speak on any subject under the sun. There’s a major, national, sovereign policy.”

Months after the historical fight of “Pambansang Kamao,” Manny Pacquiao against Juan Manuel Marquez, reports of how his marital chaos had affected his performance emerged.

This fight brought victory to our very own Manny, however, it was noticeable to keen observers how he looked distracted minutes before the fight. People close to Manny witnessed how he tried to win his lovely wife Jinkee due to a major marital issue implicating Manny again of severe womanizing. Little did people know, Jinkee was contemplating on divorcing Manny. Just recently, Manny had a spiritual transformation that brought his spirituality to an obviously higher level. Despite his mistakes in the past, he was still consistent in showing how he loves his Jinkee. Because of this spiritual awakening, Pacquiao has given up extramarital affairs, gambling, cockfighting and other vices in order to make things better for his wife.

Talk of the Town / Dumping is dumping
November 12, 2012, 04:22:12 PM
After making a big issue of the alleged indiscretions of the previous Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office management, including, among others, picking a fight over the agency’s donation of SUVs to some bishops, only to retract the unfair accusations later, current PCSO Chairman Margie Juico and her crew are now facing a number of malpractice charges themselves.
For example, the public awaits the explanation of Juico and company, about the rationale of the transfer of their offices from Quezon City to the PICC in Pasay City and detail the actual expenses used for what some sectors termed a precipitate and unwarranted transfer.
Too, Juico and her crew have yet to fully explain the continued non-implementation of a much hyped “loterya ng bayan” program designed precisely to minimize if not completely eradicate the illegal numbers game jueteng and its permutations, i.e., two balls, suertres, etc., and write finis to the misuse of the existing small- town lottery (STL) operations as front for such illegal activities despite millions of pesos spent to  “research, conceptualize and promote” it as a viable alternative.
Now, Juico and company have been charged by the local gaming unit of Malaysian conglomerate Berjaya Group, PGMC, which has an exclusive equipment leasing agreement for Luzon for the agency’s highly profitable lotto operations, of brazenly violating the said agreement by letting a competitor provide the said equipment to certain areas in Luzon while the Berjaya exclusivity remains and, worse, without the benefit of public bidding. The court has since issued a permanent injunction on PCSO not to proceed with its initiative to sub-lease, as it were, parts of Berjaya’s Luzon operations. Notwithstanding such court order, PCSO continuing disobeying the orders and thus declared in contempt by the court.
The writ of preliminary injunction issued last September yet “categorically ordered the respondents, PCSO board members Margarita Juico, Ma. Aleta Tolentino, Betty Nantes, Mabel Mamba and Francisco Joaquin III, and all their lawyers, representatives, agents, assigns and any other persons assisting them, to refrain from engaging in lotto operations in Luzon after the agency allowed Pacific Online Systems Corp. to lease lottery equipment for lottery operations in Luzon. PGMC cited Pacific Online’s disclosure dated June 1 in which the listed firm entered into an agreement with PCSO, allowing the company to lease to the agency lottery equipment for its online lottery operations in Luzon.
This new Pacific Online deal violated the exclusivity agreement between PCSO and PGMC over the Luzon area, and the prohibition against entering into government contracts without a prior public bidding. Under PGMC’s agreement with PCSO, which will expire on August 2015, the Berjaya unit will be the sole provider or exclusive source for all lottery equipment in Luzon. PCSO will also pay PGMC rentals for all lottery operations in Luzon.
Whether Juico and her board will continue to defy the orders of the court remains to be seen. Suffice it to say that despite all their pronouncements the present board headed by Juico is already suffering from the same disease which they claim consumed the previous board â€" the brazen disregard of the law and the arrogance of power. Tsk... tsk.

Speaking of arrogance and brazen disregard of the law, the Malaysian US Navy contractor, Glenn Defense Asia, has apparently acquired the same disease as the PCSO board courtesy of its lawyers, Villaraza Cruz Marcelo and Angangco law, after being charged for illegally dumping toxic wastes coming from US Navy ships by the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA). The law firm maintained that the SBMA does not have any jurisdiction over the said illegal dumping issue against Glenn Defense Asia as the same is only cognizable by the Presidential Commission on the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFACOM).
If that is not a clear if not sickening misreading of the VFA law and the applicable laws on waste disposal and related environmental concerns I don’t know what is. Obviously, dumping is dumping and Glenn Asia’s resort to such a subterfuge is totally illegal and unacceptable. No less than Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, a constitutional and international law expert, has averred that the VFA law does not cover such illegal operations. The Iloilo solon noted that the dumping of toxic wastes by Glenn defense Asia was not only a violation of the VFA law but an “infraction of international covenants on maritime pollution and national laws on toxic wastes.”
Santiago noted that the VFACOM was only a “...monitoring body mandated to submit regular reports to the President on the status of visiting US forces in the country...” and that the act of polluting was a clear violation of Article II of the VFA law which states in part that it is the duty of the United states personnel to respect the laws of the Republic of the Philippines... the government of the United States shall take all measures within its authority to ensure that this is done.”
Santiago also cited obligations codified under Articles 192 and 211 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLoS) as well as those under the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships which provides, among others, for the “protection and preservation of the environment in general and to prevent pollution from vessels in particular.”  She also noted that the VFA law cannot supersede or even go against the Toxic Substances and Hazardous and Nuclear Wastes Control Act (RA 6969) which prohibits “the storage, importation or bringing into Philippine territory, including its maritime economic zones, even in transit, either by means of land, air or sea transportation or otherwise keeping in storage any amount of hazardous and nuclear wastes in any part of the Philippines.”
So, what is Glenn Defense Asia and its high powered law firm talking about? They cannot and should not be allowed to make a mockery of our environmental laws much less use the VFA law as a cover for the company’s misdeeds. Period.

Talk of the Town / Lights, Camera, Action
November 12, 2012, 04:19:57 PM
There have been many times I wished I had cameras installed in the office, just to see how and why I was missing mail, encountering correspondence that had obviously been tampered with, or finding out about packages that never reached my hands. It can be very frustrating to suspect some individuals, but never have the proof to support one’s instinctive reactions. Faced with such blatant acts of dishonesty, I have tried my best to handle the situation the best I could, but I know my solutions have not been fool-proof.
At home, when a spate of robberies hit the neighborhood, the subject of closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) also came up even as complaints were raised against a shoddy barangay security work.
The increased incidence of crimes in the city â€" convenience store hold-ups, bank robberies, abduction, physical attacks â€" has made it important for both homeowners and business owners to ensure the protection of their person and property by installing such gadgets that serve as the extra eyes. With the low police to citizen ratio, the help of technology is needed to serve as support for security efforts of the authorities.
The need to install this particular security measure is recognized in Quezon City, where the local government will start implementing a “no CCTV, no business permit” policy next year. The policy is especially targeted for establishments like “banks, pawnshops, malls, gas stations, supermarkets and even schools,” a report in this newspaper states.
In fact, some P100 million worth of CCTV equipment is set to be installed in “major and secondary streets in Quezon City’s 142 barangays.”
The question is: Are CCTV cameras effective deterrent of crimes and reliable aids in solving crimes?
Personally, I approve of this move to help control crime in the city. I am hoping that the cameras will be durable and have a high resolution, though, or else they will be useless in identifying wrongdoers anyway. Also, local authorities should recognize that those who are knowledgeable about such cameras may be able to work around it and escape identification altogether. Such things must be taken into consideration when installing the equipment around the city.
A hundred million worth of cameras, obviously, is not enough to eradicate crime and it wrong to expect it to do so. I can think of a few more things local government can spend huge money on in order to maintain peace and order in the city. Brighter lighting in all streets, for one, may significantly reduce criminal attempts, not to mention make our streets friendlier to pedestrians.
In many cities abroad, people would rather walk than take cars, and they do not have to take a ride just to get to a park and enjoy the natural surroundings or take walks for exercise. Hereabouts, only residential villages or residential clusters are able to provide homeowners with such benefits. Other than that, people can take their “walks” inside malls.
Indeed, how can we have a walkable city if the streets are dimly lit, corners are dark and neglected, and some sidewalks are practically nonexistent? Will having CCTV cameras help in making citizens feel safer, even if they may not feel such well-being for their surroundings?
Furthermore, while CCTV cameras may capture the acts of wrongdoing, do the police have a way to identify faces or fingerprints? I hope so. A good database is an effective complement to the information culled from CCTV cameras, that is for sure.
Another point raised by Jessica Soho in State of the Nation recently is that CCTV cameras will be pointless if there is no efficient follow-through from the authorities. Catching criminals, after all, still needs the intelligence and initiative of the police force aside from cooperation from citizens.
The QC government is trying to make the city more business-friendly, and one of the ways it aims to do so is by requiring business owners to install these security equipment. It also aims to make the steps for business applications and renewals as simple as possible, which makes sense if government wants to encourage entrepreneurship among its citizens. With CCTVs in place and plans to invite investors underway, next on the agenda should be sweeping away the dregs of corruption that create discouraging barriers for those who wish to make it in the city.

Palace ‘hopes’ military deal with Canada won’t anger China

After sealing an agreement that sees the Philippines buying defense equipment from Canada to defend its territory, Malacañang remains hopeful that the government’s action  will not raise further tensions with China.
At a radio press briefing, deputy presidential spokesman Abigail Valte yesterday said President Aquino is “hoping” that the deal signed by the Philippines and Canada for defense-building won’t have an adverse effect on the Philippine relations with China, even as the Palace official wished it won’t in any way contribute to a heightened tension between Manila and Beijing over a territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).
Valte said the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last Saturday by Aquino and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper is for a government-to-government transaction on the procurement of defense equipment.
“Hopefully not. The MoU is for government-to-government transaction on procurement of defense and military related equipment,” she said.
Philippines and Canada signed MoU on defense and military-related procurements, witnessed by the President and the Canadian Prime Minister.
Aquino said the deal between the Department of National Defense and the Canadian Commercial Corp. “will help us in our efforts to build our defense and security capabilities.”
“We have a lot of outmoded equipment,” Aquino said, noting the Philippines has only 132 ships â€" most of them dating back to World War II â€" that have to patrol 36,000 km of coastline.
He added in terms of aircraft, the Philippines has “not a... single fighter” in its inventory.
The MoU seeks to ensure expeditious procurement transactions with the Canadian government’s assurance on the quality of equipment from and compliance with procurement contracts by Canadian companies.
The signing came amid increasing tension between the Philippines and China over the Scarborough Shoal.
“At our end, this is part of effort to attain credible minimum defense position. We’re hoping it will not be received any differently by any other party,” Valte said.
But in a move likely to stoke a growing territorial row with its neighbors, China is to ramp up development on a disputed South China Sea island.
The development of roads, water supply and drainage systems will be stepped-up in the new “capital” city of Sansha on Yongxing, one of the islands that make up the disputed Paracel chain, Luo Baoming, Communist Party secretary of southern Hainan Province told state television last Saturday.
Luo added steps will also be taken to enforce China’s “legal rights” in the region, which includes other island chains which are the subject of competing claims by Asian countries.
Beijing enraged Vietnam and caused concern in Washington when it announced the establishment of a new city and military garrison at Sansha in July.
The island, under the control of Hainan Province, will have administrative control over a region that encompasses not only the Paracels, but Macclesfield Bank, a largely sunken atoll to the east, and the Spratly Islands to the south.
The sovereignty of each remains a matter of dispute.
“To safeguard our legal rights in the South China Sea, we are now coordinating between the relevant departments in order to set a more unified, and efficient law enforcing body,” Luo said.
Domestic media reported in August that work had begun on sewage disposal and waste collection facilities for the island’s roughly 1,000 residents.
Beijing claims most of the South China Sea, which is home to vital shipping lanes and substantial proven and estimated oil and gas deposits.
Taiwan and Asean members the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia all have rival claims on areas of the sea, while the United States is also watching China’s increased assertiveness closely.
The announcement in July that Sansha would be established led to a formal protest being lodged by Vietnam, which said it violates international law.
The Philippines, which is involved in a dispute over the Spratly Islands, summoned the Chinese ambassador to lodge a complaint against the garrison announcement.

Apo Island corrals, off Dauin Negros Oriental and four other dive sites in the country were jointly recipient of the Dive and Travels Award 2006 in Japan for being the third best among the best dive sites in the world.

Among the internationally recognized best dive spots in the Philippines are the Tubbataha Reef; Malapascua Island in Cebu; Balicasag Island in Bohol; Anilao, Batangas; and Puerto Galera in Mindoro.

Also well known among divers are Apo Island off Dumaguete City and the surrounding islands of Palawan.
The country defeated Thailand, Hawaii, and other South Pacific and Caribbean countries, which are internationally known dives sites. The best dive site awardees were determined through a survey conducted by the Marine Diving Fair (MDF), now considered as Asias largest scuba diving and beach resort exhibition that attracts over 50,000 travelers.

Philippine Tourism Authority chairman Robert Barbers said with the distinction earned by the country, he expects more foreigners to visit the Philippines. Barbers said the diving industry Is very big thus tourism stakeholders must intensify their efforts to develop dive resorts around the country in order to attract more tourists.
"We have more than 7,000 islands and exploring even a third of these as a potential dive sites would surely be a welcome development in our tourism industry. Hopefully, in the succeeding years, the Philippines would be named as the best dive site in the world," Barbers said. (MSN)

City Mayor Dan Neri Lim expressed disgust yesterday over the non-inclusion of 3 members of the Loboc Childrens Choir to Jiangxi, China for the formal signing of the sisterhood agreement between Bohol and Jiangxi province.

The mayor echoed the sentiments raised by radiomen Batchoy Alba and Chito Vizarra during the Governors Report last Friday at the Peoples Mansion. Alba said he learned that the children concerned are traumatized and had to be brought to the city to be entertained. He told the TIMES earlier that the 3 children were downhearted when their names were deleted from the list and some other names were inserted. Alba was referring to the inclusion of the daughter and husband of choir conductor and Metrobanks Teacher of the Year awardee Alma Taldo.

Reacting to the inclusion of the members of the provincial board to the Jiangxi trip in his Saturday radio program Mayors Report, the city mayor did not mince words in calling the SP members as bagag nawong (thick faced) and oportonista (opportunists). "Pag lansad ninyo, miingon mo nga mosilbi mo. Wa mo moingon nga molansad mo para ka-biyahe mo ug libre. Kon duna moy delicadeza, di mo angay mokuyog," he told the SP members.
He also lambasted the SP for disapproving the citys economic amelioration measure when the bill was subjected for review. The disapproval, he said, contradicts the claim of provincial officials that the province and the city are partners. "Kon naay problema, tawag mo nako. Pero kon grasya, kalimtan na lang ko," he said. He said no more partnership this time. You work on your own, we will also work on our own.

He specifically hit first district solon lawyers Felix Uy and Jose Veloso and Eufracio Mascarinas for not standing for the cause of the city hall employees. He also hit Federated Association of Barangay Councils President Brigido Imboy for not standing for the cause of the barangay officials.

Lim also questioned why General Services Office (GSO) chief Engr. Edwin Vallejos was included as logistics officer when the trip was supposed to be for free. He found it highly anomalous that Vallejos was included while the 3 children were not. I want to show to the whole world, particularly the elected provincial officials, that we should prioritize our children. We have to put more value on our children, he explained when asked why he took the cudgels for the 3 children.

The technicality is secondary. What is important is the sincerity of the provincial officials to promote the rights of children, he said. Dili maayo ang inyong gibuhat, not only to the Loboc Childrens Choir but also the city employees of Tagbilaran, he said. The city mayor also justified the words used in his radio program. Kanang bagag nawong, figure of speech ra na.

Meanwhile, city kagawad lawyer Danilo Bantugan thru text messages told the TIMES yesterday that the city economic amelioration ordinance mentioned by Lim refers to the fund releases given to the city employees last December. When the ordinance was submitted for review, he said, the SP disapproved it. Budget Officer Valer Orig recommended for the disapproval which recommendation was adopted by the SP. Bantugan said a mere amendment of the ordinance would solve the problem.

Meanwhile, a radio listener who requested anonymity said the verbal attacks of the city mayor were uncalled for. Instead of attacking the SP, he should instead question the members of the city sanggunian what went wrong with the ordinance, the source said. But that is not possible, he vouched for the performance of the city sanggunian, he said.

General Topic / Pacquiao Watch: 24/7 storyline
November 12, 2012, 04:02:25 PM
It would be interesting to see how HBO’s award winning show 24/7 will package the fourth, and hopefully the last, of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez fight installments.

Eight years since the two last brawled into a competitive draw, all boxing angles and trivia between them that you could imagine have been squeezed dry for all its commercial appeal.  The last time, HBO raised many eyebrows when it featured Marquez drinking his own pee as part of his conditioning regimen.

Manny Pacquiao, of the Philippines, left, and Juan Manuel Marquez, of Mexico. Pic: AP.
Both fighters have been thoroughly dissected, their strengths and weaknesses examined and exposed.  But at the end of the day, they will still wind up bitterly arguing who won which fight unless of course one of them ends up scoring a knockout next month in Las Vegas.  That would somehow erase all doubts and controversies that haunted their three previous fights.

For the record, Pacquiao holds the edge over Marquez with two wins and a draw.  Both wins however are the narrowest of margins.

So what would be the storyline of 24/7 when they begin airing their usually four part episodes beginning this weekend?

One can be imaginative the first time around, resourceful the second and inventive the third time.  But a fourth time?

What should not be lost, I believe, will be the fate that awaits the two boxers after their fourth fight.

At 39, there are not many fights left for Marquez.  This one on December 9 (Philippine time) will probably be his last.

For Pacquiao, 33, it is the first of the countdown before he finally call it quits.

I think 24/7 will be more nostalgic and historical but heavy on perspective.

Until Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr finally agree to a fight that could surpass all box office records as well as rival the excitement and adrenalin rush of all fights in the Ali-Frazier trilogy and the Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns epic brawl, Marquez is the only competitive fight there is for Pacquiao that, on the side, will also sell.

But a defeat for any of these two modern-day gladiators could spell the beginning of the end of their Hall of Fame careers, to say the least.  A devastating loss could abruptly end a career.

A win by Marquez will give him redemption and a glorious exit to retirement.  He may fight one or two more times but a victory over Pacquiao is his Holy Grail.  Another loss, especially a knockout one, will be a disgraceful way of ending his boxing career although he is already locked for a trip to the Hall of Fame.

A conclusive win by Pacquiao will force the hands of Mayweather into signing the dotted line to finally arrange a once in a lifetime showdown between the two top pound for pound boxers in their generation who also happen to fight in the same division.  A loss could severely affect his marketability and bring his career down spiraling.

This fight is a must win for both of them, career-wise.

Dear Kuya Rom,

Pakitago mo ako sa pangalang Lina, edad 23. Ako ay may boyfriend. Siya ang lalakeng masasabi kong “the man of my dreams”.

Thank you so much sa maipapayo mo sa akin. -- Tina

Dear Tina,

God bless you!

Payong kapatid,
Kuya Rom

The headline on the cover reads “Sexy Movies Are Back” and, yes, Yam is indeed leading the cinematic revival.

Ngayong November, she is set to be launched in the steamy, erotic adult drama Rigodon from veteran director Erik Matti (Scorpio Nights 2, Balahibong Pusa, etc.).

“I want to be known as someone who takes off my clothes but can act,” sabi ni Yam.
The FHM cover story and the movie are part of Viva’s plan to position Yam as this generation’s premiere sex symbol. Earlier this year the studio started giving the public a glimpse of the new star via Pantaxa, a sexy reality TV show on the Viva cable channel where Yam has emerged the brightest among the six (6) sexy newcomers.

Not only in the daring and baring department, she has also revealed herself to be smart and creative.

“I’m a person who likes to challenge myself when pushed to the limit,” sabi pa ni Yam sa interview ng FHM sa kanya.

“That’s how you test yourself, see how you deal with everything that comes your way. I’m just trying to be strong and versatile. I’m risking it all, that’s how life is -- you have to risk it and go out of your comfort zone, try different things and learn from it.”

The voluptuous star, a graduate of Multimedia Arts from the College of De La Salle Saint Benilde, has been in show business for a little under two years. She actually started out as a drummer for a rock band (called Ursa Minor).

Her first acting gig was in a music video for the band Mayonnaise, which became some sort of a screen test that got her to be signed by Viva.

Co-starring with Yam are John James Uy and Max Eigenmann.

The Mayonnaise Jar

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle,
When 24 hours in a day is not enough;
remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class
and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, wordlessly,
he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
and start to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again
if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand
and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded
With an unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table
and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided,
'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

The golf balls are the important things - God, family,
children, health, friends, and favourite passions
Things that if everything else was lost
and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else -- The small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued,
'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are
important to you.

So...

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your children.
Take time to get medical check-ups.
Take your partner out to dinner.

There will always be time
to clean the house and fix the dripping tap.

'Take care of the golf balls first --
The things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'

One of the students raised her hand
and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.

'I'm glad you asked'.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

“I am just a human being and I never imagined that I would be the cause of such a huge tragedy.”

“I tried to control the truck but the brakes failed and it hit the bridge.”

“It appears that Altamirano had a grudge against the victim for spreading in their circle of friends gossip that Altamirano had borne two children and she complained to her boyfriend (Quiambao) to teach her a lesson,” ani Dela Vega.
