Middle school wrestler Justin Kievit intentionally lost a match to do something nice for a boy with cerebral palsy. Kievit, who his coach says was chosen for the task due to his big heart, put his opponent's arm around him, "pinning" him and therefore, causing him to win.

A dog carried her 10-day-old puppies to safety after a house fire in Temuco, Chile, destroyed the portion of the home where they lived. All but one survived.

A young woman and her service dog caused quite a stir over the weekend when they both showed up to her college graduation ceremony dressed in matching caps and gowns.

"The girl and the dog received the loudest applause hands down. Very adorable," tcjones54 wrote.

According to posts on Reddit, the photo was taken at the Saturday convocation ceremony of the College of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign.

"This picture is everything that is right in the world," wrote Redditor AndreThreeHundred. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/)

and another...

"This is my service dog, Hero, after we graduated with our Master's degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign," she wrote in a caption accompanying this Imgur photo.

"Hero knows over forty commands to assist me," she added on Reddit on Monday, adding that the dog had been quite the "celebrity" at the graduation ceremony. "He loves to retrieve objects for my like envelopes, pens, my crutches, etc. He also turns off the lights, opens doors, and he pulls me in my wheelchair up ramps! I couldn't have gone to college without him."

'After WE graduated?!' Heart melting. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/)

my bad.  what forty years can do to a free man.  the u.s. justice system wasted this man's four decades.  sometimes, justice is not only blind, it also suffers from retinitis.  sad.

The Chiloé Archipelago (Spanish: Archipiélago de Chiloé) consists of several islands lying off the coast of Chile. It is separated from mainland Chile by Chacao Channel in the north, the Sea of Chiloé in the east and Gulf of Corcovado to the southeast. All of the archipelagoâ€"except Desertores Islands, which are part of Palena Provinceâ€"forms the province of Chiloé. The main island is Chiloé Island (Isla Grande de Chiloé). (wikipedia)

The islanders who don't want a bridge to the mainland

By Lucy Daltroff
Chiloe
25 January 2015

A group of islands once visited by Charles Darwin could soon find itself at one end of Latin America's longest bridge. But not everyone in Chiloe, off the coast of Chile, is happy about it.

Rime tourists bundled up against the cold (Gabrielle Jaffe)

For rime to occur, it needs a combination of cold climate, sufficient airborne moisture and clear skies overhead. Typically this happens in the interior of large continents, in a protected river valley or on mountain slopes shrouded in mist. Located at a latitude of 44 degrees north and some 350km inland, Jilin’s geography is ideal for the formation of rime. Despite air temperatures sometimes dipping as low as -32C, a hydropower dam on the city’s river keeps the water flowing, which in turn encourages the creation of milky white freezing fog.

Rime under blue skies (Gabrielle Jaffe)

When fog forms below 0C, its super-cooled water droplets remain liquid, even though the temperature is below freezing. But as soon as the droplets brush something solid such as a tree branch, they freeze instantly. Tiny ice granules build up, growing into feathery white forms known as rime.

Elusive rime near Jilin (Gabrielle Jaffe)

In China...

From late November to early March, dazzlingly white ice crystals form on the trees along the city’s Songhua River. Giving trees the appearance that they’ve been carefully dusted with sugar, these crystals form only when fog freezes.

This picture of a little boy and his #best friend on a swing is just as adorable without a back story. The little boy's mother shared the image, writing that her son wouldn’t go on the swing without his beloved cat, and that they spent every moment together. Just adorable…Images that warm your heart like this instantly restore your faith in humanity.

When Sue Drummond’s Shih Tzu, Bibi, fell off a pier in Melbourne, it seemed certain that the little dog wouldn’t survive. Until Roden Soemawinata spotted him, that is. Roden had been scattering his grandmothers ashes on the pier, but quickly stripped off his clothes and jumped into the sea in his underwear to grab the dog and pass him back to Sue. Utterly amazing.

When Iranian schoolteacher Ali Mohammadian noticed that one of his students was being bullied after going bald as a result of a mysterious illness, he decided to show solidarity and shave his own hair. In no time, his entire class shaved their heads and the bullying stopped. (http://www.theguardian.com/)
