'INNOCENT.' Bella Ruby Santos is thankful that the charges against her have been dismissed but sad because the killers of six-year-old Ellah Joy Pique remains scot-free. (SUN.STAR PHOTO)

BELLA Ruby Santos, the woman accused in the kidnap-slay of six-year-old Ellah Joy Pique in 2011, is now free.

Regional Trial Court Judge Ester Veloso of Branch 6 ordered the dismissal of the case against Santos, saying that the prosecution failed to establish the identity of the criminal.

Veloso’s order stemmed from the demurrer to evidence that Santos’s lawyer Rameses Villagonzalo filed in May this year.

In that pleading, Villagonzalo said the case “is based on a lie, a frame-up.”

Disappointed

“We cried. We are so disappointed,” said Renante Pique, Ellah Joy’s father, upon learning of the dismissal.

Santos’s British boyfriend and co-accused in the case, Ian Charles Griffiths, is still charged with the killing of Ellah Joy because the court has not acquired jurisdiction on him.

(BANAT NEWS)

In July 1893, a farmer named Charles Boger and his wife were living in Whitehaven, Pennsylvania when Mrs. Boger suddenly died of unknown causes. Doctors confirmed her death, and she was promptly buried. That should have been the end of the story, but sometime after her death, a friend told Charles that his wife had suffered from hysteria before Charles had met her, and it was possible that she hadn’t actually been dead. The very thought of Mrs. Boger having been buried alive haunted Charles until he became hysterical.

Unable to live with the thought of his wife dying in her casket, he employed friends to help him exhume her body for confirmation. What he found was shocking. Mrs. Boger’s body was turned over. Her shroud and robes were shredded to pieces and the glass of her coffin lid was broken all over her body. Her skin was bloodied and scratched, while her fingers were missing entirely. It was presumed that she chewed them off while attempting to escape. Nobody knows what happened to Charles Boger after the discovery. -- http://listverse.com/

The couple managed to contact friends who then got in touch with the AXLA animal association, who launched an appeal on Facebook.

The appeal read: “My name is Javier. I am the husband of Teresa, the nursing assistant infected with Ebola. I want to publicly condemn that a certain Zarco, who I think is the health chief for the Madrid region, has told me that they have to put down my dog. He has asked for my consent which I have denied. He will therefore request a judicial order to break into my house and destroy him.”

The appeal spread rapidly across the internet and by Tuesday evening more than 135,000 people had signed on online petition to #saveExcalibur.

Javier said that he had left Excalibur well supplied with food and water with the balcony door open so he could go out and “do his business,” and insisted that alternatives were available and that his pet did not need to be put down.

The dog, he wrote, could be put “in quarantine and observation, as they have done with me.”

Limon also wrote ironically: “But of course a dog is easier, it doesn’t matter as much… Are they going to put me to sleep too?”

Little is known about the ability of dogs to spread the Ebola virus. In 2005, the IRD research institute in Paris released a statement, saying that dogs “may infect and excrete the virus for a determined period, thus becoming a potential source of infection for humans.”

The Ebola crisis is causing considerable worry in Spain, after the first case of the deadly virus on their soil. However health officials in Spain insist they have the situation under control.

Sanitary authorities wearing special protective clothes forced their way into the home of Teresa Romero Ramos and her husband, Javier Limon, on Wednesday afternoon, after a judicial order from a Madrid court had granted special permission for entering the house, Spain’s EFE news agency reported.

The Madrid city government ordered the dog’s death Tuesday as a preventative measure to stop further infection.

Excalibur had been left home alone by the couple after they were both admitted to hospital Monday.

The dog belonging to the Spanish nurse confirmed to have Ebola has been killed, despite a massive social media campaign and vigil by animal rights activists outside her flat.

The mixed-breed canine, called Excalibur, was finally put to sleep in the Complutense University of Madrid veterinary hospital on Wednesday at 14:30 local time, the Spanish daily El Mundo reports, citing sources at the university.

What is also appalling are the purchases of the following: autoclaves/sterilizer for P1,465,000 when the price is only P16,000 l; fetal monitoring system for P2,680,000 but originally priced P538,000; regular hospital bed purchased at P148,000 and priced at only P9,032.76; ICU bed for P545,000 when its price is only P34,123.76; Orthopaedics bed for P480,000 when it is only worth P24,087.36; ultrasound machine priced at only P1,299,750 abd purchased at an overpriced P7,980,000; and hospital cabinets worth only P2,258 purchased at P17,850.

The continual purges during Kim’s short tenure cannot be a good sign. In the space of 15 months he switched out his army chief three times, and it appears he replaced about half of the top 218 military and administrative officials. Pyongyang, according to the Financial Times, has not seen such turmoil since the late 1950s, when his grandfather Kim Il Sung eliminated opposition after his failure in the Korean War. As famed Korea watcher Bruce Bechtol has pointed out, the constant purges of senior civilians and flag officers over the last few years is proof of Kim’s inability to cement his position at the top of the political system.

“Senior officials in North Korea’s Workers’ Party and military are increasingly objecting to policies or ignoring orders from leader Kim Jong Un, leading to rumors that his grip on the country is weakening,” noted the Chosun Ilbo, the most widely read newspaper in South Korea, in late July. Defying instructions would have been unthinkable during the tenure of his father or grandfather.

Of course, in the world’s most opaque regime, almost any scenario is plausible. We should know a lot more, however, when we see who is on the reviewing stand during the October 10 celebration of the founding of the Workers’ Party.

Until then, we can say there are signs that Kim Jong Un has lost substantial power and will soon become, if he is not already, a figurehead.
#10775
And is Kim Jong Un really ill? He was last seen in public walking with a limpâ€"he probably has gout â€"and state media has reported he is not well, but that is not what one member of Hwang’s 11-member delegation told South Korea’s Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae on Saturday. The next day, Ryoo said he was assured that there were “no problems” with Kim’s health. But if Kim were well, there would have been no reason for him to have stayed out of sight for a month, especially during the Supreme People’s Assembly meeting.

There are too many rumors and reports to allow one to conclude that all is well in Pyongyang.

It is true that Jang Jin Sung’s storyline may not completely add up. After all, as influential as the Organization and Guidance Department may beâ€"some even think it is more important than the National Defense Commissionâ€"it is not an agency built to grab and exercise power.

Nonetheless, there are too many rumors and reports to allow one to conclude that all is well in Pyongyang. The story that the city is in lockdown â€"no permits to travel in or out issued since September 27â€"suggests that an extraordinary event has occurred. The mid-December execution of Jang Song Thaek, once thought to be Kim’s regent, and the subsequent eradication of his nationwide patronage network are symptoms of distress.
#10776
Lankov and Delury make a commonsense point, but Jang, a defector to Seoul, maintains that Kim was removed from power last year. That means Hwang could have consolidated his position in the interim and now feels secure enough to travel for a day.

Indeed, there are signs that not only has Hwang risen, but also that Kim has fallen. The young ruler did not preside over last’s month meeting of the Supreme People’s Assembly, the first time that has happened since he took power after his father’s death in December 2011. Yes, he may have been ill, but if he was politically healthy, the meeting would have been postponed until he was able to appear.

Also extremely unusual: The reports on the meeting from the state-run Korean Central News Agency mention Kimâ€"first secretary of the Workers’ Party, first chairman of the National Defense Commission, and supreme commander of the People’s Army, all the top positions in the state and partyâ€"only at the end and only in passing. In a regime like North Korea’s, these state media reports spell political infirmity.
#10777
Hwang’s trip South on Saturday comes on the heels of a widely publicized report that Kim has been deposed. Jang Jin Sung, a former North Korean counterintelligence and propaganda official, is claiming that the Organization and Guidance Department of the Korean Workers’ Party, responsible for promotions within the regime, has taken over the country. Kim, according to Jang, is now merely a “puppet.”

Leading Korea watchers, however, say they doubt Kim has lost his position at the center of the state founded by his grandfather and passed down to his father, his immediate predecessor. “This kind of travel would be way too out there if anything serious was going on in North Korea, so I don’t think it’s a sign of a coup,” John Delury of Yonsei University in Seoul told The Washington Post of Hwang’s jaunt down to Incheon, near the South Korean capital. Andrei Lankov of nearby Kookmin University, meanwhile, called the surprise visit merely a part of Pyongyang’s recent “charm offensive.” “North Korean diplomacy has been engaged in concerted, well-arranged, well-managed efforts to improve relations with pretty much the entire outside world,” he told the Post. “And you would not expect it to happen with nobody in control.”
#10778
http://www.thedailybeast.com/
10.05.14

Out of sight for a month, young Kim is supposedly ill. But rumors are swirling he’s been deposedâ€"and North Korea’s second most powerful man now feels confident enough to travel South.

Hwang Pyong So must be feeling pretty good about himself right now. At the latest Supreme People’s Assembly meeting, he was made vice chairman of the National Defense Commission. This was after his promotion to director of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People’s Army, making him the top political officer in the military. In a country where there is supposed to be no No. 2 official, he is called the second-most powerful figure.

Now he has crossed the border into South Korea on a one-day, short-notice trip, triggering hopes of reconciliation between the arch-rival republicsâ€"and heightening speculation about the fate of Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s young supremo, who has not been seen in public since September 3.

A young woman was walking down her street on a normal spring day when she saw a small child sitting beside the road and crying. She stopped to ask the little girl if she was okay, and the girl told her that she was lost. Sniffling, the girl then asked her if she could help her find her way home. Overwhelmed with pity for the little girl, the young woman readily agreed. Luckily, the little girl knew her address and had a general idea of where her home was. Before long the two had made it to her house. The front door was locked, and since the girl was too small to reach the doorbell, she asked the young woman to press it for her.

The woman pressed the doorbell without a second thought, and immediately felt a powerful shock course through her body. It knocked her out cold, and she woke up several hours later completely naked and surrounded by used condoms. The house she was in was empty, her rapists were long gone, and the child was nowhere to be seen. -- http://listverse.com/

While not as highly prized as the Champions League or the Eurovision Song Contest, Germany can claim to be champions of Europe when it comes to the number of prostitutes. By some estimates, Germany has as many as 300,000 sex workers, around half of them foreign-born. Since it legalized prostitution in 2002, the country has been referred to as a giant “sex supermarket,” with one Floridian flying there at least three times a year to take advantage of the discount prices. There are an estimated 500 brothels in Berlin alone, with over 3,000 in the country as a whole, and the industry reputedly generates around $20 billion a year.

As you would expect, Germany’s prostitution boom has a tragic dark side. Many foreign-born sex workers were trafficked into the country with promises of work, before being forced into the industry. Brothel owners take the lion’s share of the profits, with many workers paid a pittance. By some estimates, as many as 90 percent of the country’s prostitutes may have been forced into an industry they would have preferred to avoid. As one Member of Parliament observed: “At the time it was thought that legalizing prostitution would improve their situation. But that totally failed. We now see that meaning well does not mean doing well.” -- http://listverse.com/

The Filipino ID card will be made of tamper-proof security material with imprinted photograph, name, birth date, gender, date of issue and the card holder's signature.

Using false information in applying for the Filipino ID or refusing to acknowledge and recognize the ID will result to a penalty of P50,000 to P500,000 and/or six months to two years imprisonment.

Upon issuance of a non-transferrable Filipino ID card, a citizen will also be given an ID number valid for life which can only be replaced when a child reaches the legal age of 18, change of name or family name such as when a married woman adopts the surname of her husband, lost or destroyed ID cards and other revisions deemed necessary by the card holder.

According to the bill, the initial application and issuance of the Filipino ID will be free of charge as part of the government's social service responsibility. Funding for the bill's implementation will be taken from the PSA and DFA as stated in the General Appropriations Act.

If approved, Filipinos residing in the country will have to apply for the Filipino ID card at the Local Civil Registrar of the city or municipality where one resides while those who reside abroad will apply at the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consular Office of the country of residence.

Last year, President Benigno Aquino III expressed his approval of having a national identification system which aims to cut "red tape" and increase productivity among Filipinos.

The House Committee on Revision of Laws and the Committee on Appropriations approved House Bill (HB) 5060 or "An act establishing the Filipino Identifying System Act" which aims to consolidate all government issued identification cards into one national information card for all Filipinos.

MANILA, Philippines - A bill requiring the government to issue a "Filipino ID card" has been endorsed for plenary approval at the House of Representatives.

House Bill (HB) 5060 or "An act establishing the Filipino Identifying System Act" aims to consolidate all government issued identification cards into one national information card for all Filipinos.

The House of Representatives Committee on Revision of Laws and the Committee on Appropriations approved the bill on first reading.

Under the bill, it will be the duty of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to implement the program and maintain a Filipino Citizen Registry.

"It is important to note that HB 5060 assures protection against unlawful disclosure of information and records obtained in relation to the application for the national ID," a press release from the Congress said.

The masterly lyrics...

Bohemian Rhapsody

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality.

Open your eyes,
Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
Little high, little low,
Anyway the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me.

Mama, just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead.
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.

Mama, ooh,
Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.

Too late, my time has come,
Sent shivers down my spine,
Body's aching all the time.
Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go,
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.

Mama, ooh (anyway the wind blows),
I don't wanna die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning,
Very, very frightening me.
(Galileo) Galileo.
(Galileo) Galileo,
Galileo Figaro
Magnifico.

I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me.
He's just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity.

Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Never, never let you go
Never let me go, oh.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Oh, mama mia, mama mia (Mama mia, let me go.)
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me.

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye?
So you think you can love me and leave me to die?
Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby,
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here.

(Oh, yeah, oh yeah)

Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters,
Nothing really matters to me.

Anyway the wind blows.
