CEBU - Church officials in the Visayas are urging the Holy See to include Bohol as part of Pope Francis’s itinerary when he visits the country next year.

Bohol bore the brunt of the damage caused by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that also struck Cebu on October 15, 2013, said Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

“Subo man kita sa nahitabo sa bagyo, pero kung makakita ta sa old and heritage churches nga natumpag, subo sad kaayo (We’re saddened by what happened to victims of typhoon Yolanda, but the swathe of destruction left by the quake also saddens us)” Palma told reporters Wednesday.

Earlier this year, Palma said, he and other Visayas-based clergymen met in Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental for the 9th Visayas Region Pastoral Assembly where they discussed, among other things, the upcoming papal visit.

Solidarity

Palma said they’ve sent numerous requests to the Vatican for the Pope to visit other areas in the Visayas during his five-day trip.

The archbishop said he understands why the Pope chose Tacloban City because he wants to show solidarity with the typhoon’s victims.

“Mas kusog ang iyang compassion sa mga (The Pope has more passion for) typhoon victims, due to the huge death toll sa (in) Leyte. Subo man gyud hunahunaon (It’s really sad when you think of it), that is why we recognized that,” Palma said.

He said they’ve also tried to convince the Pope to visit Cebu, which will host the International Eucharistic Congress (IEC) in 2016. During his trip to Rome, Italy to meet the international organizers of the IEC, Palma said he was able to talk to the Pope four times, during which he tried to convince the pontiff to visit Cebu.

“I made mention to him on the possibility of visiting Cebu, but the Pope only smiled and did not comment,” he said.

However, the archbishop said he is not discounting the possibility that the Pope might break protocol during his trip to the country.

Because of this, Palma said the archdiocese will be extra careful in terms of its preparations. “His (Pope Francis) schedule is not final. Anything can happen,” Palma said.

The image shows "Pandora's Cluster," a group of 500 galaxies--formally known as Abell 2744--located 4 billion light-years from Earth. The "ghost light" (artificially colored in blue in the photo above) comes from so-called orphan stars that drift freely between galaxies.

Astronomers believe these stars were once part of as many as six Milky Way-sized galaxies that were torn apart by gravitational forces around 9 billion years ago. They hope to use the "ghost light" to gain a better understanding of how galaxy clusters form and change.

“The Hubble data revealing the ghost light are important steps forward in understanding the evolution of galaxy clusters,” Ignacio Trujillo, an astrophysicist at The Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, who was involved in the Abell 2744 research, said in a written statement.

Celebration of love

Liza revealed that she will wear Monique Lhuillier for her beach wedding in the Philippines in January 2015 and the one in the US. Liza has also tapped the services of renowned British fashion designer Jennifer Packham.

Color motif in the Philippines is pastel while the one in the US, is rust, with redwood trees to boot.

“We chose January as date of our symbolic wedding in the Philippines because that was the month Aiza and I reconnected (after years of going their separate ways),” Liza said before the private screening of “In Nomine Matris.”

Shock gave way to that Cloud Nine feeling as Liza Dino entered the lobby of My Cinema in Greenbelt, Makati last Wednesday, October 29, and saw her beloved, Aiza Seguerra, standing beside the giant tarpaulin of “In Nomine Matris.”

"Sobra ka na love, Pinapaiyak mo ko. But w/ all these emotions going through me, the first words that came out was: "Buti na lang nagpaayos ako ng buhok," Liza said in her Facebook post.

The evening event was an offshoot of Aiza’s hush-hush preparations to show how proud she is of Liza’s Best Actress win in Manhattan for the film, where she plays a talented flamenco dancer who sacrifices so much for her craft.

Recent cases of Ebola have been recorded in the United States, Germany, Spain, Norway, France and the U.K., but countries in West Africa have been hit the worst. In Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, over 4,500 deaths due to Ebola have been confirmed so far, with over 9,000 cases reported.

As a measure of preventing the spread into international borders, several countries have employed new tactics to screen for the virus, ranging from the most extreme cases of shutting all borders from tourists such as in North Korea to arrival screenings in various different cities. Hong Kong’s airport, which is an international hub, is mostly relying on arrival screenings to prevent Ebola from entering its borders, but it may not be as effective as the region's officials think.

“Widespread screening [of arrivals] in airports is not that effective, to be honest.... [T]he most cost-effective method is to screen people before they take the plane,” Piot said at the symposium, according to the South China Morning Post. “In Africa, there are many Chinese working there, so that could be a risk for China in general, and I assume that one day [an outbreak of Ebola in China] will happen,” he added.

China’s government and health officials hope to take lessons from dealing with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, pandemic that hit China in 2003 by setting a plan in place ahead of time and placing importance on honest and accurate communication and reporting between government bodies. China’s National Health and Family Planning Commission ordered local governments to conduct assessments of their preparedness for Ebola cases if and when the virus arrives. This included keeping detailed databases of people who have been in close quarters with suspected patients and having designated hospitals for care.

While international fears continue to rise as Ebola crosses international borders and continents, China still has not reported a confirmed case of the deadly virus. But Professor Peter Piot, the director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and one of the doctors who discovered Ebola hemorrhagic fever, said that it's only a matter of time before the high volume of Chinese working in Africa bring the disease within China's borders.

While speaking at a symposium at the University of Hong Kong, Piot, a Belgian scientist known for his research on Ebola and AIDS, who is also credited for being part of the team that discovered Ebola in 1976, said that the virus will come to China because of the number of Chinese people employed in Africa, adding that the outbreak will likely continue to expand and worsen before medicine and public health protocol catches up and controls the disease by next year.

9. “No one will help me.”
A happy and successful person won’t wait for others to help them to reach their goals in life. They will take action and will either do things themselves or know who to look for in order to get help.

10. “I don’t know what to do.”

Sometimes when you create a new goal for yourself, you might think that you don’t even know where to start. You may be completely scared to even start your goal because sometimes it can be a lot to think about. However, you can’t let this very early step in reaching your goals stop you from even starting your goals. You will need to make a realistic plan for how you will reach your goal.

If everything was easy and no extra work was needed, then it probably wouldn’t be much of a goal. You will most likely have to put the extra hours in and really work hard in order to get what you want in life.

5. “There’s no point.”
If you have been working really hard to reach your goals, then at some point during the process you may start feeling overwhelmed. You might think that there’s no point. However, people who are happy and successful persevere through less-motivating times and work to reach their goals.

6. “It’s too late.”

You might think that you are too late to reach a goal because of your age or something else that has happened in your life. However, don’t let something stop you just because you wish that you would have done it earlier.

3. “I’ll have time later to reach that goal.”
Many people might think that they can just put their goals/dreams off to the side and attempt to reach them later. However, don’t always think that you will have time. Before you know it, life will flash before your eyes and you will probably wish that you would have tried earlier.

There’s no better time than now.

4. “I’m afraid of failure.”

If you never attempt your goals because you are afraid to fail, then you have already failed. Failure may be in the back of your mind, but it should never stop you from attempting to reach for your goal.

One former housekeeper who worked at the mansion of Jacko’s mother in Encino, California, and at his Los Angeles condo, said the pop star would regularly send out three staffers to buy any magazines they could find that had pictures of his family.

“He was on a mission. There was an old Ebony magazine in which he saw a picture of . . . the Jackson 5. He didn’t like it, and so he would send people out with about $500, and when they brought the magazines back, he’d play a game of confetti where he’d shred pictures of his brothers and sisters and even his parents and throw them all around the halls and into the guest quarters,” Maid No. 1 said.

“He said, ‘Yuck, they don’t deserve to have my name, they are gutless moochers. I’m the only star. They should be cleaning my shoes.’ ”

He also kept a dartboard in the foyer of his bedroom with pictures of DreamWorks founders Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg â€" who he believed had stolen his idea for the studio and even its boy-on-the-moon logo.

“Any of the children he played with who hit the bull’s-eye would get extra ice cream or anything else they wanted,” said Maid No. 3, who worked from 1996 to 1999. “He hated those guys with a passion. He was surprisingly very anti-Semitic. He’d lead some of the kids in chants: ‘Kill the bastards,’ and ‘Kill the bloodsuckers.’ ”

The maid said Jacko watched in disgust as Spielberg got a Los Angeles Film Critics award in the 1990s.

“It was crazy. He turned into his favorite ‘Twilight Zone’ character, and his eyes kind of bugged out, and he went into this crazy trance, pointing his finger at the television screen and saying, ‘You’re a bad man, a very bad man,’ ” she said, referring to the famed TV series’ character of Anthony Fremont, a boy who “wishes away” anyone who displeases him.

“At first, I thought he’d bust out laughing or something or that he was playing around, but it changed his entire mood. He was dead serious.”
Instead of banishing his foe to a cornfield, as Anthony did, Jacko would wish Spielberg into “Jew hell,” the maid said.

After Jacko had son Prince in 1997, he began confining his squalor to his own bedroom, she said. “But, not too long afterwards, it was, ‘Here we go again, this man is ungodly.’ ”

The former housekeepers also said Jacko was a hoarder.

“A pack rat in the true sense of the word,” Maid No. 1 said. “He’d keep all of these books that he never read, shirts, hats and other little trinkets that fans would give him, and they’d be in the dining room, the kitchen, all about the floors, and he’d complain if someone put them in a different place, and he’d complain if we didn’t pick them up.

“The amount of stuff he had could have covered that entire ranch, and most of it was junk that he refused to part with.”

Maid No. 2 said only Jacko’s main closet, which held his trademark black tuxedo pants, loafers and sequined jackets, was kept immaculate.
The most scurrilous item Jacko held on to?

“I’d say there were two,” recalled Maid No. 2, who worked at Neverland from 1994 to 1996. “A soiled baby’s diaper, and a pair of Fruit of the Loom that was obviously worn by someone who was either a teen or an early-age adult.”

The maids described young guests tossing bottles and cans around the house. They would engage in hours-long food fights as well as pillow fights, which left feathers covering floors and furniture.

Jacko would object to his sheets being changed. “There were many times I had to sneak in and change his linen. I couldn’t understand how he’d sleep in such filth,” Maid No. 2 said. “There’d be socks and underpants in the bed and half-eaten chicken and potato chips, empty bottles of wine and whiskey on the floor.

“And you knew he wet himself â€" the place reeked.”

Maid No. 3 said Jacko’s bed, as well as a sofa in the living room, once became infested with bedbugs. “He said, ‘Get them the hell out of here.

Call the exterminator,’ ” she recalled. “He said we should do a better job, and he said he knew that we came from poor countries so we were used to bedbugs, but he couldn’t live with them.

“Everybody he brought in to clean, and sometimes we’d even get cleaning services to come in for the extra help. Everybody was repulsed. His bedroom smelled horrible. If everyone else was like me, they hated going in there.”

Now the court will hear accusations against Jackson again. A former Jacko pal and choreographer, Wade Robson, has filed suit against the pop star’s estate.

Robson, who appeared in Jacko’s music videos as a boy, stood by him at his 2005 criminal trial in which the singer was alleged to have molested another young boy, cancer patient Gavin Arvizo.

As a defense witness, Robson said he was never molested by the pop icon â€" although he and his mother and sister testified that Jacko would cry if denied permission to sleep with him.

But in a court filing made public last week, Robson alleged Jacko raped him as a boy. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff has scheduled an initial hearing in the case for Oct. 6.

Several of Jacko’s former maids are expected to be called as witnesses for Robson. The maids, who worked for Jacko between 1986 and 2004, spoke to The Post on the condition of anonymity.

During the star’s 2005 child-molestation trial, Kristina Fournier, who worked for more than a decade as Jacko’s housekeeper, testified that she saw syringes strewn about the property and that Jacko, usually stoned, regularly babbled unintelligibly.

While Jacko, who died of acute propofol intoxication in 2009, battled child-molestation accusations, his mental state alarmed those he hired to care for his mansion.

“Michael was a messed-up and depraved drug addict. He was twisted,” said Maid No. 3, who recalled how Jacko’s young pals â€" including Robson, another accuser James Safechuck, actor Macaulay Culkin and several nephews â€" wreaked havoc.

It was after she, guest Elizabeth Taylor and TV crews left the next morning that the real Jacko appeared.

MANILA, Philippines - Former Health secretary and Sen. Juan Flavier passed away Thursday afternoon after succumbing to pneumonia. He was 79.

Flavier graduated with a degree in medicine from the University of the Philippines Manila and a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University in the United States.

He was known for heading the country's first HIV prevention program and campaigned for the use of contraceptives, earning the ire of the Catholic church during that time.

He was appointed Health secretary by President Fidel Ramos in 1992, and served the position before he ran for and won as senator in 1995. He was re-elected in 2001 and served until 2007.

Among the laws he authored were the Anti-Money Laundering Law, Poverty Alleviation Law, Clean Air Act and Traditional Medicine Law.

Teen linked to flower shop killing in Cebu City

A 17-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday after being linked to the killing of a florist in Cebu City last Monday.

Witnesses identified the boy as the last one leaving the flower shop of victim Jun Cañete before dawn of Monday, GMA Cebu reported on GMA News TV's "Balita Pilipinas Ngayon."

Cañete was found dead inside his shop Monday, with stab wounds in different parts of the body, according to GMA Cebu's Gregy Magdadaro, Lou-Anne Mae Rondina and Jun Veliganio.

The report also said fingerprints lifted from the crime scene - particularly the drawer where the money was kept - matched those of the boy.

"Kaya namin nilabas ngayon dahil we are certain na siya yun dahil sa fingerprint," said Cebu City police head Senior Superintendent Noli Romana.

But the boy denied the allegations, saying he was introduced to Cañete only last Friday. He added that was the last time they met.

"Tinext ko siya noong Sabado pero busy siya, magkikita na lang daw kami sa Linggo. Pero di rin siya dumating kasi may sakit daw siya, nabalitaan ko na lang nung Lunes na pinatay raw siya," he said.

For her part, the suspect's mother called on the "real" killer of Cañete to surface so her son can be cleared.

Han, 35, claims he came up with the technique while trying his hand at traditional Chinese sugar painting. The ancient art form involves the use of melted sugar to create figures such as dragons, monkeys, fish, dogs, birds and flowers.

Halfway through his work, however, sweet-toothed Han got hungry and decided to take a sip of the sugary paints used to paint the sugar artworks. He loved the taste so much that he finally ended up abandoning the paintbrush and continued to paint with his tongue. Eventually, he completely switched to using his tongue as a tool for his art.

Han has received nationwide praise for his unique interpretation of sugar painting. He is now travelling around China, giving several performances of his self-developed tongue-painting technique. During one of his performances at Hangzhou city in Zhejiang Province, he dipped his tongue in water colored with food dye and enthralled the crowd with his paintings. He completed two pieces in 40 minutes, which he later sold to the crowd.

According to Han, the tongue, when used properly, can be very advantageous to the artist because it creates a brush stroke that is unique to that artist. “It is a great way to really feel a connection with the artwork you are creating, using the tongue so you can only feel directly the paper rather than through the brush, but you can also taste it as well,” he said.

As bizarre as this painting technique may seem, Han Xiaoming is not the only tongue painter in the world. Two years ago, we featured Ani K., an Indian artist from Kerala, who actually used his tongue to paint with oil-based paint.
