A fermented mixture of corn and human saliva. Community members (in Andes tradition) will chew up the corn and spit it in a bowl and wait for the starch to break down into the sweet-tasting maltose. --  http://thechive.com/

The visit is "very unexpected but is also very much welcome," Archbishop John Du of Palo near Tacloban said in a statement.

Francis' final public event is a Mass in Manila's Rizal Park on Jan. 18. The Philippines' presidential executive secretary, Paquito Ochoa, said the crowd was expected to number "in the millions."

When St. John Paul II visited the Philippines in 1995, he drew 5 million people to Mass, a record that no pope has since matched. Francis just may, given his enormous popularity in a country that appreciates his attention to the poor.

Asia is widely considered the future of the Catholic Church, growing there while it withers in traditionally Christian Europe. Despite being a minority religion in every Asian nation except the Philippines, which is predominantly Roman Catholic, the church baptizes more Catholics in Asia every year than in Europe, according to Vatican statistics. - with Philstar.com

VATICAN CITY â€" Pope Francis will host a luncheon for Filipino survivors of the deadly Typhoon Haiyan during his Jan. 12-19 visit to Sri Lanka and the Philippines, his second visit to Asia in a year that confirms the region is a priority for his pontificate.

The Vatican on Friday released the itinerary for the pope's visit, which comes just five months after his August pilgrimage to South Korea.

Francis first flies to Colombo, where he will canonize Sri Lanka's first saint, the Rev. Giuseppe Baz, a 17th-century missionary credited with reviving the Catholic faith in the country.

The pope arrives in Manila Jan. 15, and two days later flies to the central city of Tacloban, hardest hit by the Nov. 8, 2013, typhoon that left more than 7,300 people dead or missing. There he will celebrate Mass, host a luncheon and comfort survivors.

While the US maintained top scores in areas like creativity, contemporary culture and educational institutions, respondents penalized the country for its role in global peace and security, placing it 19th out of 50 in this category.

Germany, on the other hand, achieved the largest overall score on the index in part for its “sports prowess,” said policy advisor Simon Anholt.

“Germany appears to have benefited not only from the sports prowess it displayed on the world stage at the FIFA World Cup championship, but also by solidifying its perceived leadership in Europe through a robust economy and steady political stewardship,” he said in a statement.

The also country scored high in areas of honest and competent government, investment climate, and social equality.

Rounding out the top five spots are the UK, France and Canada.

Authors note that after years of steadily climbing the ranks, Russia experienced a major setback for the 2014 edition, mostly for its perceived role in international peace and security -- the most drastic score drop for any single attribute across the board.

“International diplomacy clearly reaches beyond the realm of public opinion. However, policy makers need to be keenly aware that the way in which a country is perceived globally can make a critical difference to the success of its business, trade and tourism efforts, as well as its diplomatic and cultural relations with other nations,” said senior vice-president and report director Xiaoyan Zhao.

“As our partner Simon Anholt often says, the only superpower left in today’s world is global public opinion.”

Germany has knocked the US off its perch in a new ranking that could be described as an international popularity contest.

After holding steady to the top spot in the Anholt-GfK Nation Brands Index for the past five years, the US has been sidelined by Germany, which has been named the most popular country among 50 developed and developing nations.

For the report, researchers conducted 20,125 online interviews across 20 countries on overall topics like culture, people, tourism, exports, governance, immigration and investment.

The study measures global perceptions of each country.

New York â€" An horrific video shot last Friday and posted to Facebook that shows a man brutally kicking an innocent stray cat 20 feet through the air led to the alleged animal abuser’s arrest Monday afternoon.

A man police claim is Andre Robinson, 21, first lures the friendly, gray cat over with an offer of a caress before he pulls back his foot and boots the creature into some bushes outside a Brooklyn housing complex.

In a shocking display of callousness, the man celebrates his cowardly act with a cackle and a little dance.

But Robinson, who the New York Daily News reports has eight priors, probably wasn’t laughing when police picked him up around 2pm on Monday.

"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 musical Roberta. The song was sung in the original Broadway show by Tamara Drasin. Its first recorded performance was by Gertrude Niesen, who recorded the song with orchestral direction from Ray Sinatra, Frank Sinatra's second-cousin, on October 13, 1933. Niesen's recording of the song was released by Victor, catalog# VE B 24454, with the b-side, "Jealousy", featuring Isham Jones and his Orchestra. The song was later reprised by Irene Dunne, who performed it in the original 1935 film adaptation of the musical, co-starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott. The song was also included in the 1952 remake of Roberta, Lovely to Look At, in which it was performed by Kathryn Grayson. --Wiki

Caesar cited some administrative cases of elected Cebu officials that were dismissed after their election into office of different positions.

These include former governor Gwendolyn Garcia who was elected congresswoman in 2013 and former Mandaue City mayor Thadeo Ouano who was elected member of the Provincial Board in 2010 elections.

The case stemmed from the complaint filed by former councilor Danilo Margallo on the sale of two unserviceable dump trucks to Rufino Alpas Junk Shop for the amount of P150,000 without public auction in violation of the Commission on Audit rules.

The dump trucks were reportedly put inside the garage owned by the Moreno family in violation of the Government Accounting and Auditing Manual.

The anti-graft office earlier ruled that Cynthia allowed herself to be so persuaded and influenced by Caesar thereby depriving the municipality the opportunity to obtain a proper valuation of the vehicles and dispose of through competitive public bidding.

They were both found guilty of conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service and were meted six months suspension without pay and benefits.

CEBU, Philippines - The Office of the Ombudsman has sustained its 2010 decision suspending Aloguinsan Mayor Cynthia Moreno and her husband Vice Mayor Augustus Caesar Moreno for six months after they were found guilty of an administrative case.

Graft Investigation and Prosecution Officer III Jose Ronald Bersales denied on October 23, 2014 the motion for reconsideration filed by the Morenos. The ruling was approved by Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales.

The vice mayor, however, said they have already filed a petition for certiorari before the Court of Appeals with prayer for the issuance of temporary restraining order.

The Morenos invoked the Aguinaldo Doctrine in their petition despite insistence of the anti-graft office in its recent decision that the doctrine is not applicable in the case saying the respondents were not elected to the same position during the immediate subsequent election from the questioned act.

"The spirit of Aguinaldo Doctrine is the trust and confidence of the people electing us to the office," Caesar said.

"Aguinaldo was reelected to the same position of Governor during the immediate subsequent election from the questioned act, while Cynthia was not reelected as Mayor but only elected as Vice-Mayor and Caesar was not reelected as Vice Mayor but as Mayor during the immediate subsequent 2010 National and Local Elections from the questioned act occurred in 2008," Bersales ruled.

Lord Tennyson, Virginia Woolf and Vincent Van Gogh are familiar examples of artists and writers who suffered serious mental illnesses, but Jamison explained that psychiatric illness was the cruel engine of their creativity. Tracing their family pedigrees, she showed that many of these artists’ siblings, parents and descendants were institutionalized in mental hospitals, committed suicide, or endured life-long struggles with mania, despair, schizophrenia or other mental disorders. The genetic backbone to mental illness is strong. Ernest Hemingway and his supermodel granddaughter Margaux Hemingway both killed themselves. Separated from one another in environment and experience by a generation, their fates were inevitably tethered by their DNA. In all, seven members of the Hemingway family died at their own hand. This raises the question of why the genes of such devastating brain dysfunctions should persist in the human gene pool.

Statistics show that among all categories of creative artists, writers suffer by far the highest incidence of bipolar disorder, outstripping all other artistic professions. Why? Jamison concludes that the manic phase of bipolar disorder infuses the writer with furious energy and limitless stamina. The author foregoes sleep, is driven to take daring risks, expands their imagination and embraces grandiose thinking.

The crash of depression ending the manic phase immerses the writer in the depths of human suffering. This infuses poets and writers with the most monumental and profound dimensions of human experiences, moving them to contemplate the meaning of life, confront the certainty of death, and struggle against the agony of despair to survive adversity.

Would we have Poe’s Raven today if the tormented author had taken lithium to suppress his bipolar illness? Not likely, considering the high frequency of psychiatric illnesses among writers and artists, concluded psychiatrist Kay Jamison of Johns Hopkins Medical School speaking last week at the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting in San Diego. Madness electrifies the creative process, Jamison concluded, but this difficult drug-use dilemma raises an even more provocative question:

Would we have Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds had the Beatles not taken LSD?

During the harsh winter of 1609â€"1610, British subjects in the famous colony of Jamestown, Virginia, ate their dead and their s***. This fact doesn’t make it into very many U.S. history textbooks, and the state’s official website apparently forgot to mention it in their history section.

When you think about it rationally, this fact should be a part of mainstream history. After all, it demonstrates the strong will to survive among the colonists. It shows the mind-boggling hardships they endured and overcame. Yet the taboo against eating these two items is so overpowering that this episode can’t be mentioned in conventional history.
Luckily, an unconventional historian, Howard Zinn, revealed this fact in his classic, A People’s History of the United States. Food was so nonexistent during that winter, only 60 out of 500 colonists survived. A government document from that time gives the gruesome details:

Driven thru insufferable hunger to eat those things which nature most abhorred, the flesh and excrements of man as well of our own nation as of an Indian, digged by some out of his grave after he had lain buried three days and wholly devoured him; others, envying the better state of body of any whom hunger has not yet so much wasted as their own, lay wait and threatened to kill and eat them; one among them slew his wife as she slept in his bosom, cut her in pieces, salted her and fed upon her till he had clean devoured all parts saving her head.

Xi's wife, Peng Liyuan, was once a popular folk singer more famous than her husband, and in contrast to her predecessors she has taken on a much more public role, prominently joining her husband on trips abroad as part of China's soft power push to seek global status commensurate with its economic might.

Propaganda officials have built the image of Xi and his wife as a loving couple. Photos of Xi shielding his wife from rain on a state visit, picking flowers for her, or simply holding her hand have circulated widely on China's social media, prompting much oohing and aahing.

"When the president personally held up the umbrella for the madam, it complies with the international norm of respecting women," blogger Luo Qingxue wrote on the news site for the party-run newspaper People's Daily last year after Xi was seen holding an umbrella over himself and Peng on a state visit to Trinidad and Tobago.

But Putin messed up the script Monday night while Xi chatted with the American president.

In the video, Peng stood up, politely accepted the gray shawl or blanket offered by Putin, and thanked him with a slight bow. But she soon slipped it off and put on a black coat offered by her own attendant.

It spawned a flurry of commentary on China's social media before censors began removing any mention of the incident.

Li Xin, director of Russian and central Asian studies at Shanghai Institute for International Studies, said Putin was just being a proper Russian and did nothing out-of-line diplomatically.

"It's a tradition in Russia for a man of dignity to respect ladies on public occasions, and in a cold country like Russia, it is very normal that a gentleman should help ladies take on and off their coats," Li said. "But the Chinese may not be accustomed to that."

BEIJING (AP) â€" It was a warm gesture on a chilly night when Vladimir Putin wrapped a shawl around the wife of Xi Jinping while the Chinese president chatted with Barack Obama. The only problem: Putin came off looking gallant, the Chinese summit host gauche and inattentive.

Worse still were off-color jokes that began to circulate about the real intentions of the divorced Russian president â€" a heartthrob among many Chinese women for his macho, man-of-action image.

That was too much for the Chinese authorities.

The incident at a performance linked to this week's Asia-Pacific summit originally was broadcast on state broadcaster CCTV and spread online as a forwarded video. But it was soon scrubbed clean from the Chinese Internet, reflecting the intense control authorities exert over any material about top leaders while also pointing to cultural differences over what's considered acceptable behavior in public.

"China is traditionally conservative on public interaction between unrelated men and women, and the public show of consideration by Putin may provide fodder for jokes, which the big boss probably does not like," said Beijing-based historian and independent commentator Zhang Lifan.

An awkward handshake: Leaders of China, Japan meet
By Christopher Bodeen, Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) -- An uneasy handshake Monday between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe marked the first meeting between the two men since either took power, and an awkward first gesture toward easing two years of high tensions.

As the two men approached each other, stern-faced, to shake hands in front of cameras, Abe briefly tried to say something to Xi, who gave no response and turned away, appearing distinctly uncomfortable, to fix his gaze toward the cameras for the rest of the handshake.

Situations

Sexual harassment may occur in a variety of circumstancesâ€"in workplaces as varied as factories, academia, Hollywood and the music business. Often, but not always, the perpetrator is in a position of power or authority over the victim (due to differences in age, or social, political, educational or employment relationships) or expecting to receive such power or authority in form of promotion. Forms of harassment relationships include:

The perpetrator can be anyone, such as a client, a co-worker, a parent or legal guardian, relative, a teacher or professor, a student, a friend, or a stranger.

The victim does not have to be the person directly harassed but can be a witness of such behavior who finds the behavior offensive and is affected by it.

The place of harassment occurrence may vary from school, university, workplace and other.

There may or may not be other witnesses or attendances.

The perpetrator may be completely unaware that his or her behavior is offensive or constitutes sexual harassment or may be completely unaware that his or her actions could be unlawful.

The incident can take place in situations in which the harassed person may not be aware of or understand what is happening.

The incident may be one time occurrence but more often it has a type of repetitiveness.

Adverse effects on the target are common in the form of stress and social withdrawal, sleep and eating difficulties, overall health impairment, etc.

The victim and perpetrator can be any gender.

The perpetrator does not have to be of the opposite sex.

The incident can result from a situation in which the perpetrator thinks they are making themselves clear, but is not understood the way they intended. The misunderstanding can either be reasonable or unreasonable. An example of unreasonable is when a woman holds a certain stereotypical view of a man such that she did not understand the man’s explicit message to stop.

With the advent of the Internet, social interactions, including sexual harassment, increasingly occur online, for example in video games.

General Topic / What is sexual harassment?
November 11, 2014, 02:20:39 PM
Sexual harassment is bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors. In most modern legal contexts, sexual harassment is illegal. As defined by the US EEOC, "It is unlawful to harass a person (an applicant or employee) because of that person’s sex." Harassment can include "sexual harassment" or unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical harassment of a sexual nature.

The legal definition of sexual harassment differs by jurisdiction. Sexual harassment is subject to a directive in the European Union.

Where laws surrounding sexual harassment exist, they generally do not prohibit simple teasing, offhand comments, or minor isolated incidents. In the workplace, harassment may be considered illegal when it is so frequent or severe that it creates a hostile or offensive work environment or when it results in an adverse employment decision (such as the victim being fired or demoted, or when the victim decides to quit the job). The legal and social understanding of sexual harassment, however, varies by culture.

In the context of US employment, the harasser can be the victim's supervisor, a supervisor in another area, a co-worker, or someone who is not an employee of the employer, such as a client or customer, and harassers or victims can be either male or female.

It includes a range of actions from mild transgressions to sexual abuse or sexual assault. Sexual harassment is a form of illegal employment discrimination in many countries, and is a form of abuse (sexual and psychological) and bullying. For many businesses and other organizations, preventing sexual harassment, and defending employees from sexual harassment charges, have become key goals of legal decision-making. -Wiki

MANILA, Philippines - The country's merchandise exports topped those of major economies in Asia by soaring to $5.849 billion in September, higher by 15.7 percent than the $5.056 billion posted a year ago.

“The country’s export performance for the last two quarters of 2014 culminated remarkably despite slower growth in July (12.4 percent) and in August (10.5 percent). From a peak of 21.3 percent in June 2014, the latest merchandise export growth outturn signals the rebound of the exports sector, even surpassing most economies in the region during the period,” said Deputy Director-General and currently National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Officer-in-Charge Rolando Tungpalan.

NEDA noted that the Philippines outperformed People’s Republic of China (15.3 percent), Vietnam (14.4 percent), South Korea (6.9 percent), Taiwan (4.7 percent), Indonesia (3.9 percent), Thailand (3.2 percent), Malaysia (3 percent), and Hong Kong (1 percent). Meanwhile, Japan and Singapore posted negative growth at -1.2 percent and -1.6 percent, respectively.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority showed that electronic products remained as the county's top exports, accounting for 41.8 percent of the total exports revenue in September. This was followed by chemicals, other manufactures, machinery and transport equipment, and other mineral products.

Meanwhile, Japan was the country's top export destination with a revenue worth $1.734 billion and a 29.6-percent share of the total export receipts. This was followed by the United States, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Resolving on the incident, the Sandiganbayan sustained the allegations of the Ombudsman, who said that the credibility of Gamallo far outweighs the denials of Escandor.

The justices said that if Escandor alleged that if the whole office plotted against his ouster, it smacks out of reason why only present one defense witness excluding himself.

“It is unbelievable that Escandor could not find other witnesses to refute Gamallo’s claim, while the complainant was able to gather witnesses who testified on her behalf,” the decision read, adding that the respondent’s claims were “reduced to mere denials.”

The Sandiganbayan added that Gamallo is honest and truthful even in cross-examination, when she confirmed that she signed the ouster of Escandor not to get back at her boss but to save the image of NEDA.

They added that for Gamallo to file a sexual harassment case is not a walk in the park.

“Filing a charge for sexual harassment is not a trivial matter. It entails having to go public with an incident that one is trying to forget. It means opening oneself to public ridicule and scrutiny,” the justices rendered, quoting a Supreme Court ruling.

Escandor was convicted to be placed behind bars for six months and to pay a fine of P20,000.

Associate Justices Alex Quiroz penned the decision, with Associate Justices Jose Hernandez and Samuel Martires concurring. JOHN CONSTANTINE G. CORDON

At the witness stand, Gamallo recounted her bitter struggle when her boss grabbed her when she was about to go home. Escandor kissed her on the lips but she moved away.

Lina Villamor, an officemate, saw Gamallo alighting from the stairs wiping her lips. Gamallo told Villamor what happened.

Apart from Villamor, Lelany Reso-or, Escandor’s secretary, and a security guard said that they saw how their boss took advantage of Gamallo.

Even before, Escandor had already been sending inappropriate messages through chat reading, “Hello, I miss you today,” “You are so beautiful,” or “I love you more everyday.”

Gamallo resigned in NEDA in 2003 where she filed a complaint at the NEDA Central Office. However, due to inaction, she filed the case before the Office of the Ombudsman in Visayas, which later on was built up and landed in Sandiganbayan.

During his defense, Escandor elaborated the layout of his office and said that had he been displaying indecent innuendos on Gamallo, everybody could have seen it because furniture were not obstructing sight.

Escandor told the court that Gamallo only concocted such allegations because her husband, a lawyer in NEDA and a junior of Escandor, had been in a bitter feud when Escandor filed an administrative case against Gamallo’s husband.

Escandor added that after a criminal case filed by Gamallo’s husband was dismissed, an avalanche of charges was filed against him, including her case and another sexual harassment case concerning Ruth Paul Cruz, another employee.

The Sandiganbayan Third Division convicted Jose Romeo Escandor for violation of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act when he took advantage of Cindy Sheila Gamallo, a contractual employee of NEDA assisting in a Unicef project.

In the 39-page decision of the anti-graft court, the magistrates found that Escandor indeed displayed licentious behaviour before Gamallo, a married woman whose husband worked with Escandor.

The case traces in 1999 when one morning Escandor called Gamallo in his office, grabbed her, embraced her and kissed her on the forehead.

A series of malicious motives ensued, worst of sort was in December 2000, when Gamallo felt awkward during their Christmas party presentation because her boss is staring at her.

Worse, the defendant's wife started confiding to her that Escandor has an "intense appetite" for sex that tires her out.

To her mind, the problem became a lot more serious when the accused suggested twice in 1999 that they should start a sexual relationship.

As she continued to ignore the defendant's amorous attentions, Escandor changed his tactics by starting to berate her during staff meetings in Neda Central Visayas.

It was then that she decided to take action by forwarding one of Escandor's e-mail to then Neda Deputy Director General Raphael Lotilla and filing a complaint with the Civil Service Commission (CSC).

The CSC dismissed the complaint for lack of jurisdiction but endorsed the matter to the Office of the President.

The OP ordered an investigation by the Neda, which eventually resulted in Escandor's dismissal from government service in 2007. (Sunnex)

Facing the witness stand, the victim recalled that Escandor called her to his office in 1994 and told her that he was "falling in love" with her despite of the fact that she is already married.

Embarrassed by the declaration, she kept the problem to herself and simply chose to ignore the matter in the hope that Escandor will lose interest.

Instead, he started making physical contacts on several occasions like forcing her to sit beside him during lunch meetings and caressing her hands under the table; sending her pop-up love notes on her office computer; and at one time, forcibly dragging her and kissing her on the cheek while saying he missed her.

In her statement, she said that Escandor also started sending vulgar messages on her email discussing sex and forwarding sex jokes, including a picture of a bare-breasted former United States First Lady.

Feeling upset, the complainant began consulting officemates and showed them Escandor's messages on her mobile phone.

The complainant learned that Escandor has a habit of regularly borrowing pornographic films from a male officemate.

THE Sandiganbayan fifth division has convicted a former director of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) in Central Visayas for sexually harassing a female subordinate, the Office of the Ombudsman said.

Jose Romeo Escandor, a former director of Neda-Central Visayas, was slapped with a P20,000 fine without a jail term since he was also convicted of similar offense in October 2013 by the court's third division.

In the latest case, the fifth division used as mitigating circumstance the absence of evidence showing that Escandor used his superior position to threaten the complainant or to entice her with a promotion.

"(T)he Court is convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the acts of sexual harassment perpetrated by the accused against (complainant) resulted in an intimidating and offensive environment for (her). Wherefore, premises considered, the Court finds Jose Romeo Escandor guilty beyond reasonable doubt of the offense of sexual harassment," the court said.

According to the testimony of the complainant who was an Economic Development Specialist and served directly under Escandor, the regional director harassed her for almost a decade from 1994 to 2004 and she found courage to file a criminal case against him when she could no longer stand his advances.

History / Four Dead In Five Seconds
November 10, 2014, 07:00:34 PM

This shoot-out also goes by the name of “The El Paso Gunfight,” but its most memorable moniker is the self-explanatory “Four Dead in Five Seconds Gunfight.” It featured Dallas Stoudenmire, a notorious marshal known for his ability (and willingness) to gun down opponents. In his brief career as marshal, Stoudenmire killed 10 people, more than many other iconic Old West figures.

On April 14, 1881, a Mexican posse was tracking down two missing vaqueros (Mexican cowboys) who were pursuing cattle rustlers. This led them to El Paso, specifically to the farm of one Johnny Hale. A trial ensued, where two of Hale’s accomplices were convicted for the murders of the vaqueros. During the trial, constable Gus Krempkau acted as interpreter because he knew Spanish.

A few hours later, Krempkau was approached by Hale and his friend, former marshal George Campbell. Hale was furious that Krempkau had sided with the Mexicans. In a fit of rage, he pulled out Campbell’s gun and shot Krempkau.

Stoudenmire, across the street, heard the shot and barged into the room guns blazing. He first shot an innocent bystander. Then he shot Hale between the eyes. Krempkau, barely alive, pulled out his own gun and shot Campbell in the hand. Then Stoudenmire also shot Campbell in the stomach, and both he and Krempkau died within minutes. So, technically, four people didn’t die in five seconds, but the name stuck nevertheless. -- http://listverse.com/

The full moon makes coral have orgies.

On or near the full moon each December, corals off the coast of Australia participate in the most massive synchronized release of egg and sperm on Earth. Many coral species around the world do this, but the releases in Australia are the largest, visible from shore as wavy pink plumes. -- http://thechive.com/

Manila Bulletin â€" 17 hours ago

That Vice President Jojo Binay did not show up in the scheduled hearing of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee was a foregone conclusion. He could not afford to subject himself and his office to the expected indignities from Senator Cayetano and Senator Trillanes. Both have shown their disdain of anyone who does not follow the script that they have written â€" as accusers, prosecutors, and judges.

Consider their treatment of Mayor Junjun Binay and of Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) awardee (Chief Justice Sereno was chairman of the board of judges) Antonio Tiu. Even the layout of the mayor’s house and the installation of an elevator were pounced on by the devilish duo, brushing aside what many Filipinos know of the lingering sickness of the mayor’s late wife. Filipino-Chinese businessman Tiu was incessantly badgered to open up his bank deposits and when the two were reminded of the threat of kidnapping, Senator Cayetano made light of it. This was an affront to those of us (not just Filipino-Chinese) subject to the dangers of kidnapping (which has been on the rise), burglaries, and theft, and to those who have already been victimized. Unlike the two, the Filipino people do not have security details (paid out of the people’s taxes) protecting them.

That the whole exercise is not “in aid of legislation” has become very clear to many of our countrymen. In the beginning they were, as I was, of the view that both would be objective and decent even if in the past, Senator Trillanes had subjected former Secretary and a PMA upperclassman Angelo Reyes to ridicule and extreme discourtesy while Senator Cayetano treated former Senate President Enrile badly. Regretfully for the Senate’s reputation, both have not measured to most of our expectation of how a senator should conduct himself.

Their actuations are convincing many that both are intent on besmirching the Vice President’s reputation with no regard for ferreting out the truth. The devilish duo have allowed witnesses to say anything, pouncing on sound bites that will be carried by a few supportive media and hopefully stay in the mind of the electorate up to May, 2016.

1. Cardiometabolic Syndrome

Say what? It sounds bad, because it is bad. Cardiometabolic syndrome is the scary condition we mentioned at the beginning of this article. The Baylor study found that eating instant noodles two or more times a week was associated with the syndrome, which raises a person's likelihood of developing heart disease and other conditions, such as diabetes and stroke.

Ladies, pay attention to this: Women (specifically South Korean), not men, who ate instant noodles at least twice a week showed a 68% higher risk of metabolic syndrome. Yikes!

2. Noodles

Have you ever wondered how the noodles are made? In order to create a long keeping noodle that can be on store shelves or in your kitchen cupboard for 4 to 12 months, it's deep fried in oil. That's right, they are fried noodles. And obviously, that can't be good for your body.

There are air-dried instant ramen kinds, but they take longer to cook and cost more than the cheap kind.
#10173

3. Calories

Did you know that one serving of instant noodles is typically HALF the package? Have you ever eaten just half? Didn't think so.

One block of prepared ramen noodles has nearly 400 calories, which is bad news if you've considered it a quick snack. At this many calories, instant noodles clock in as a full meal.
#10174

4. BPA Chemicals

Look close. Now, look closer.

You can't see it, but it's there alright. We're talking about a chemical called bisphenol A (BPA), which is used for packaging the noodles in polystyrene foam containers. Studies have shown that BPA can affect the way hormones send messages throughout our body, specifically the primary female sex hormone, estrogen.
#10175

5. Salt

Can you guess the amount of sodium in one serving of cup noodles? 910 milligrams.

Ramen is high in sodium, packed with 41% of your daily allowance with each package. Most of this sodium is in the flavoring packet that we just told you about. Using less flavoring, which is mostly salt, will reduce the sodium content. But, that also means eating ramen with a watered-down soup base...

Also remember that eating too much sodium can increase a person's risk of heart failure, osteoporosis, stroke, high blood pressure and heart disease.
#10176

6. Flavoring Packet

Do you know what this is made of? Yes, it makes your ramen taste like it does. However, this flavoring powder is made of salt, monosodium glutamate, seasoning, and sugar. That's bad news for your body.

The worst ingredient is the MSG, or monosodium glutamate. That's the "flavor enhancer" used to improve all kinds of tastes. Instant noodle makers use it to make their shrimp flavors taste more like shrimp, and beef flavors more like beef.

7. Lack of Protein and Vegetables

There is hardly any nutritional value in these cups. 0% vitamin A, 0% vitamin C, and 0% calcium. Just 4 grams of protein and 10% of iron. Adult men needs about 56 grams of protein a day.

And, no, you are absolutely not getting your serving of vegetables through instant noodles. Consider those dried pieces of corn, carrots, and whatever else as decorations to make the noodles look more appetizing, because it certainly doesn't give you the nutrition you would be getting in a full meal.
#10178

8. Fat

Mmm...looks good? Well, it contains a lot of fat. One 85 gram package of ramen noodles has 14.5 grams of fat.

The unhealthy saturated fats make up 6.5 grams, which is about one third of your daily allowance. The remainder of the fats are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Today, we focus in on a particular popular food that may be worse for you than you previously thought.

It's cheap, easy to make, and a nice break from the frozen pizza or microwavable mac n' cheese you've been munching on for dinner; it's ramen -- a.k.a. instant noodles.  Those tasty meals and snacks that can cost something like 18 cents per pack/meal if you buy in bulk.

All you need is hot water, the ability to tear open a seasoning packet, chopsticks (or a fork and spoon), and some slurping skills. It fills you up pretty quick and also keeps your wallet full, so what's not to love?

This may not come as a shock to you, but instant noodles have been proven to be terrible for some people.

We came up with a list of the eight biggest reasons instant noodles can be bad for your health, using data from WebMD and, most importantly, findings from a new study by Baylor University. The study was published in The Journal of Nutrition and shows that consumption of instant noodles significantly ups the risk of a scary condition for certain groups of people.  This same condition has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and even a stroke.  Read to the end of this article to learn more about that scary reason to limit your ramen consumption.

And that's not all you should be concerned about -- what follows are a total of eight reasons that ramen noodles may be bad for your health...

A Daily Beer Could Reduce Kidney Stone Risk
http://www.pastemagazine.com/
By Rachel Haas

Turns out, a beer a day could keep kidney stones away.

The Washington Post reports that a study found in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology compared the effects certain beverages had on a person’s chance of developing kidney stones. It was found that daily doses of sugary soft drinks could increase the chance of kidney stones, while other drinksâ€"such as coffee and beerâ€"reduced the risk.

Folks who drank one or more sugar-sweetened colas per day had a 23 percent higher risk than those who drank them once a week. Those who drank sugary, clear non-cola sodas daily experienced a 33 percent higher risk as opposed to weekly consumers.

But a daily regimen of other tasty beverages were found to lower the risk of kidney stones compared to weekly intake: Risk was reduced 26 percent for caffeinated coffee, 16 percent for decaffeinated coffee, 12 percent for orange juice, 11 percent for tea, 31 percent for red wine and 33 percent for white wine.

And finally, beer was found to reduce the risk of kidney stones by 41 percent. Cheers!
