ATLANTA (CBS Atlanta) â€" One third of adults drink excessively but are not alcoholics, says a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study analyzed information from over 138,000 U.S. adults between 2009 and 2011.

The researchers found that almost one in three adults was an excessive drinker because they usually participate in binge drinking on more than one occasion.  Bing drinking is defined as drinking alcoholic beverages with the primary intention of becoming intoxicated by heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time.

The study found that only about 10 percent of excessive drinkers are alcohol dependent.

The researchers also found that among the people who reported binge drinking 10 or more times in a month did not meet the criteria for alcohol dependency.

According to the CDC, excessive alcohol use led to approximately 88,000 deaths a year between 2006 and 2010.

“Although alcohol dependence is an important public health problem, these findings suggest that most excessive drinkers are unlikely to need addiction treatment,” the researchers wrote in their study.

The study was published in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease.

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol -- Alarming cases of diarrhea in Loboc led health authorities to check the water sources, including water refilling stations.

Municipal Health Officer of Loboc Dulce Budiongan confirmed the recent rise of diarrhea cases in two barangays, where some patients claimed they only drank mineral water bought from water refilling stations.

Budiongan said it alarmed her when several residents of Barangays Jimilian and Villaflor, and few from Ugpong, Alegria, Sawang, and Gotozon went to the municipal health office for check-up due to loose bowel movement.

The barangay captain of Agape also informed the health office that several people in the village had diarrhea, she added.

Many of the patients had been admitted at the Gov. Celestino Gallares Memorial Hospital.

Water check

Budiongan immediately ordered the sanitary inspector, Susan Calacar, to conduct water sampling on all water sources, including water refilling stations and the source in Cabadiangan area.

The Cabadiangan area has no water filter.

All storage systems, the water pipelines, reservoir, and water tanks have been checked to trace the source of the contaminated water that may have caused the rise in diarrhea cases.

As of posting time, health authorities are still waiting for the result of the water analysis.

During rainy season, cases of diarrhea would rise as rain water contaminated water sources, particularly those that have no filter or undergo chlorination, said Budiongan.

Instructions to water consumers

The municipal health officer instructed midwives and nurses to go around the affected barangays to advise the residents to boil their drinking water first, including mineral water from refilling stations.

Budiongan said boiling kills disease-causing germs that trigger diarrhea.

The nurses and midwives also distributed Aquatabs water purification tablets that the Provincial Health Office provided.

Residents are told to mix one tablet with 8-10 liters of water, which after 30 minutes would already be safe for drinking.

Water sampling on water refilling stations is done every month, but this incident prompted Budiongan to instruct the sanitary inspector to conduct another one even prior to the next schedule.

Water testing costs P170 per station.

Water refilling stations found positive of contaminants would immediately be shut down, Budiongan said.

The recent cases of diarrhea came from the lowland barangays, most of them in Jimilian and Villaflor.

English Dictionary / Nauseous vs. Nauseated
November 20, 2014, 06:00:53 PM
Ask most people to use “nauseous” in a sentence and you’ll get something like: “This word-based list is making me nauseous.” Nearly all of us use it as a synonym of “sickened.” Strictly speaking, we’re wrong to do so.

“Nauseous” means “having the ability to cause nausea in others.” An article may be nauseous, but it’s making you nauseated. Smug grammar articles delight in pointing this out. It’s a word so rarely used correctly that 90 percent of your audience is bound to be wrong.

Unfortunately for pedants, it’s not so simple. When “nauseated” first entered the English dictionary in the 17th century, it meant what we would now say nauseous should mean. The meaning of nauseous itself contorted, too, from “inclined to sickness” in 1613 to “disgusted, affected with distaste or loathing” in 1885.

This is important because it shows a term constantly changing to keep up with usage. Currently, Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary lists nauseous as having two definitions: to cause nausea or to be affected with nausea. The American Heritage Dictionary says it’s slowly coming to supplant “nauseated.” In short, it’s a word currently in flux, with two distinct meanings depending on whom you’re talking to (and how much of a pedant they are). -- http://listverse.com/

#10019
The relatives of the suspect immediately reported the incident to the police, resulting in her arrest. She will be charged with parricide.

The mother, who was detained at the Carcar City Police Station, said it was not her intention to kill her child. According to her, she and the baby were sleeping when her brother woke them up.

Her brother was allegedly angry and hit her with a towel because she failed to sell their goods in the market.

The mother said she tried hitting back her brother but accidentally threw the baby away. The suspect’s live-in partner, a 73-year-old man, said what happened was an accident.

However, the brother said his sister is really irresponsible. In fact, she would often leave the child alone at night and will come home only in the morning. He said he woke his sister to feed the baby because the latter was already crying.

Police Officer 2 Camia Codo, of the Womens and Children’s Protection Desk, said they will file a parricide case against the mother.

Meanwhile, a psychological intervention will be done by the Carcar City Social Welfare Development Office on the mother.

Social welfare officer Earlanie Jimenez said they are just waiting for the referral from the police. â€"with Ria Mae Y. Booc and Decemay Padilla/FPL (FREEMAN)

CEBU, Philippines -  A teenage mother was arrested by the police in Carcar City, Cebu Tuesday for allegedly killing her one-year-old baby boy.

The 18-year-old mother, whose name is withheld by The Freeman, reportedly threw her baby against the door, causing severe head injury. The baby was rushed to Cebu Provincial Hospital in Carcar City where he died Tuesday evening.

The mother allegedly got mad when her brother woke her up to feed the baby who was crying, apparently because he was hungry. But, instead of feeding the boy, the suspect threw him against the wooden door, hitting his head.

Father Ernetti purported to have personally seen a number of important historical events with the Chronovisor, the most notable being the crucifixion of Christ. In 1972, the May issue of Italian weekly news magazine, “La Domenica del Corriere” (Courier's Sunday), published a photo depicting the crucifixion and claimed that it had been taken with the Chronovisor. Father Ernetti denied this, citing the photo’s clarity and proximity as uncharacteristic of the Chronovisor’s photographic capabilities. The photo later revealed to be strikingly similar to a reverse-image of a wood carving by sculptor, Cullot Valera.

In addition to the crucifixion and a speech given by Napoleon Bonaparte, Father Ernetti also claimed to have seen a 169 BC production of the tragedy, “Thyestes”, which has been considered a lost work in modern times as only a few fragments of the text remain intact. Father Ernetti claimed to have reconstructed the entire text, which was later translated to English by Princeton University professor, Dr. Katherine Owen Eldred. Eldred noted in her analysis that she believed Ernetti had written the play himself rather than transcribing an original performance.

In a 2003 interview, François Brune relayed that a few months prior to Father Ernetti’s death in 1994, Ernetti told him that he had just partaken in a meeting at the Vatican with the last remaining scientists who worked on the Chronovisor. According to Father Ernetti via Brune, the Chronovisor had been dismantled by that time. On his death bed, Father Ernetti reportedly recanted his claims of the Chronovisor; however, Brune theorized that Ernetti was coerced into making a false confession. -- http://www.wisegeek.com/

Weird and Extreme / Chronovisor
November 19, 2014, 06:47:26 PM

According to French priest and paranormal author, François Brune, the Chronovisor was a device owned by the Vatican which allowed people to view events in the past or future. Brune’s 2002 book, “The Vatican’s New Mystery” alleges that the Chronovisor was built in the 1950s by Italian scientist and priest, Father Pellegrino Maria Ernetti (1925-1994), along with twelve world-renowned scientists. Among the scientists named by Father Ernetti, were Nobel Laureate and physicist Enrico Fermi, and rocket scientist Wernher von Braun.

The Chronovisor has been described as a large cabinet with antennae made from alloys of unknown metals, a connected cathode ray tube, and a control panel of buttons and levers. According to “The Vatican’s New Mystery”, Father Ernetti claimed that the Chronovisor could be programmed to view and record specific times, locations, and even people in the past or future. Father Ernetti further claimed that the Chronovisor functioned by processing electromagnetic radiation residue from past events.

Exaggerated military power

The defense sector receives the lion's share of government finances, nearly 15 percent of the 2014 budget, but Dibb and Lee believe China will not become a military superpower until it's capable of taking decisive action on a global scale.

"Although China has developed potent military capabilities to make it hazardous for U.S. forces to operate in the approaches to China, the fact remains that Beijing could not enforce a full military blockade of Taiwan or attempt a full-scale amphibious invasion of that island," they wrote.

As a result of territorial disputes with Japan and the majority of Southeast Asia, China has few friends in Asia. A report from the Pew Research Centre earlier this year showed respondents in five out of eight Asian countries had overwhelmingly unfavorable views of China.

This unpopularity undermines Beijing's influence and capacity to wield power in the region, Dibb and Lee said.

Mizuho's Varathan agreed. "China doesn't have the charismatic soft power that Asia's dominant power ought to have, it is still trying to gain friendships and investments in the region," he said.

An unproductive economy

China's gross domestic product growth rate of 7 percent may be a five-year low, but it's still the envy of most countries. However, experts say declining productivity is one of biggest tell-tale signs that China cannot maintain its current pace of growth.

"The capital-output ratio estimate for 2012 was 5.5:1, meaning that a capital input of $5.50 achieves only $1 [of output]. As economic logic insists, and the development experiences of other East Asian countries show, capital-output ratios at this level depict an enormously wasteful and capital-inefficient economy that is not sustainable," said the report.

Other experts agree: "For a middle-income country, capital productivity has dropped too much. This occurred mainly in the past ten years, reflecting the efficiency problems on China's development path," said Xiaolu Wang and Yixiao Zhou, authors of the 2014 academic paper 'Deepening Reform for China's Long-term Growth and Development.'

Furthermore, China will be unable to make the jump from middle-income to high-income status - a requirement for a dominant state- unless it improves the standard of living for citizens, the report added.

Doing so would require the allocation of more government funds to public goods such as social security and unemployment benefits, as well as healthcare, which only constitute 10.5 percent and 6.1 percent of the 2014 budget, respectively.

China may be Asia's economic powerhouse but it won't become the region's dominant power, according to a new report.

"In examining the factors that go towards the development of Chinese national power-and its ability to use it to achieve national objectives-predictions about a Chinese superpower with the ability to dominate Asia would be premature, if not improbable," said Paul Dibb and John Lee, authors of the report published by Australian think tank Kokoda Foundation.

The argument that China is already Asia's pre-eminent power based on its growing economic and military capacities is weak, the authors say. They expect the limitations of China's economic might, a lack of close bilateral relationships and weak military capability to keep the country from becoming an advanced political-economy that wields influence in the region anytime soon.

"China is a dominant power, but it's not the dominant power in the region or the world. It's got the economic hardware in place... as a collective country, there's no denying that it's an economic and military power," said Vishnu Varathan, senior economist at Mizuho Bank.

• International students contributed some $27 billion to the US economy last year, an increase of $3 billion from the prior year.

• For the first time, four universities â€" New York University, University of Southern California, University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, and Columbia University â€" each hosted more than 10,000 international students.

• The number of US students studying abroad for academic credit rose by 2 percent to 289,000 â€" a smaller increase than the year before. Most of those students had short-term experiences of eight weeks or less. Students majoring in STEM fields (math and sciences) had the biggest increase and now make up the largest portion of US students studying abroad.

• Britain remains the most popular destination for US students studying abroad, followed by Italy, Spain, France, and China. But several other destinations saw double-digit growth, including South Africa, Denmark, South Korea, Peru, and Thailand.

Increasing the number of US students who study abroad is still a goal, said Evan Ryan, assistant secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, in a call with reporters, noting that international experience and a broad worldview are increasingly necessary in a global economy. "There's work to be done to make it more acceptable and more affordable," Ms. Ryan said.

"It would seem after Sept. 11 that international exchange might have slowed down or ground to a halt, but the numbers have continued to grow on both sides," said Peggy Blumenthal of the Institute of International Education on a call with reporters. "In today’s very complicated world, it’s educational exchange that is the hope that we can find ways to work together."

Highlights from this year's report include:

• The bulk of international students coming to the US still come from China. In 2013-14, nearly 275,000 Chinese students studied at US undergraduate and graduate universities, an increase of almost 17 percent from the prior year. But several other countries also saw double-digit increases, including Kuwait (an increase of 43 percent), Brazil (22 percent), Saudi Arabia (21 percent), Iran (17 percent), and Venezuela (14 percent). Many of those increases were due to scholarship programs put in place by the country of origin.

• India sends the second largest number of students to the US, after China, and this year that number grew by 6 percent to just over 100,000 students. The growth was a reversal of a three-year trend of declining numbers of Indian students at US colleges and universities. That growth was due to graduate students.

• Together, the top three countries sending students to the US â€" China, India, and South Korea â€" represent about 50 percent of all international students in the US, though the number of students from South Korea declined slightly.

• The fastest-growing region this year was the Middle East and North Africa, with 20 percent more students coming to study in the US. Some 6 percent of international students now come from Saudi Arabia.

While the bulk of international students coming to the US are from China, students are coming from an increasingly diverse set of countries. The annual 'Open Doors' report gives the latest breakdown.

By Amanda Paulson

A record number of international students â€" nearly 900,000 â€" studied in US colleges and universities during the 2013-14 school year, 8 percent more than the previous year. And while students from China continue to dominate, students are coming to the United States from an increasingly diverse set of countries.

More US students also chose to study abroad, though the share of US students who study abroad for some portion of their undergraduate years is still less than 10 percent.

The "Open Doors" report released Monday â€" an annual report put out by the Institute of International Education and the State Department â€" is the most recent breakdown of international education statistics: who comes here and where US students go. This year, the report also highlighted trends over the past 15 years, noting that since 2000, the number of international students in the US has grown 72 percent.

This caused vomiting and a rapid loss of bodily fluids, and most importantly, it made the body too poisonous to be eaten by maggots. Finally, a self-mummifying monk would lock himself in a stone tomb barely larger than his body, where he would not move from the lotus position. His only connection to the outside world was an air tube and a bell. Each day he rang a bell to let those outside know that he was still alive.

When the bell stopped ringing, the tube was removed and the tomb sealed. After the tomb was sealed, the other monks in the temple would wait another 1,000 days, and open the tomb to see if the mummification was successful. If the monk had been successfully mummified, they were immediately seen as a Buddha and put in the temple for viewing. Usually, though, there was just a decomposed body.

The mummies also possess the accessories they had prior to death. However, their eyes have been removed. Even so, they are considered able to see into the souls of the living and be able to perceive reality perfectly.

The practice is now outlawed by the government of Japan and not practiced today by any Buddhist sect.

Scattered throughout Northern Japan around the Yamagata Prefecture are two dozen mummified Japanese monks known as Sokushinbutsu, who caused their own deaths in a way that resulted in their mummification. The practice was first pioneered by a priest named Kuukai over 1000 years ago at the temple complex of Mount Koya, in Wakayama prefecture. Kuukai was founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, which is the sect that came up with the idea of enlightenment through physical punishment. A successful mummification took upwards of ten years. It is believed that many hundreds of monks tried, but only between 16 and 24 such mummifications have been discovered to date.

The elaborate process started with 1,000 days of eating a special diet consisting only of nuts and seeds, while taking part in a regimen of rigorous physical activity that stripped them of their body fat. They then ate only bark and roots for another thousand days and began drinking a poisonous tea made from the sap of the Urushi tree, normally used to lacquer bowls.

A woman married her sister’s fiance - then stabbed him and buried him alive so she could be with a new lover.

Twisted Qiao Li Tsui, 25, first met Jian Tsao, 30, two years ago when he was engaged to her sister.

After a brief affair, Qiao convinced him to leave heartbroken sister Wan Niu, 27, and marry her instead.

But a year after the wedding in Hangzhou, a city in eastern China, she met new lover Cai Chen, 27, online and began having an affair with him.

The demented couple then hatched their plot to get rid of Qiao’s husband so they could marry.

Luring him into the mountains on the pretence of having a picnic, she then attacked unsuspecting Jian, knifing him repeatedly in the chest until he fell unconscious.

She and her lover, who was waiting nearby, then dug a shallow grave and threw the unconscious body into it before burying him alive.

The pair were caught three days later, when a guilt-ridden Cai handed himself into police.

After Cai showed them where they had buried Jian, his body was dug up and sent for an autopsy.

An examination revealed there was dirt and soil in his lungs, indicating he was still breathing when he was buried.

The woman’s sister, Wan, said: "She is an evil, conniving bitch who deserves to be shot.

"She ruined my happiness, destroyed my fiance, and has now destroyed the life of this new lover.

"She has no remorse and no feelings. I hope she rots in hell."

A police spokesman said: "This is one of the most diabolical love crimes we have ever come across."

Qiao Li is facing life in jail.

According to the Catholic Church, the demand for exorcists in the U.S has doubled 3 consecutive years.

Ouija boards, witchcraft and other occult practices are all blamed for opening a door to the demonic.

Tulsa is one of only 3 cities in America where Roman Catholic priests are secretly trained to exorcise sinister, wicked demons.

Everett Cox said, “Praise God for the Catholic people. They are doing them.”

Pastor Cox claims he’s exorcised hundreds of demons over the years.

“We get to see these people leave with big smiles.  They’re pumped. And as ministers, we are pumped too because we got to see God actually use little old us,” he said.

Sybol Day is a believer after she says her grandson was successfully transformed from darkness to light.

She said, “You could see the peace on his face. I have a new little boy. He hasn’t gotten into trouble once at school. For this to happen like instantaneously and see him change, this is nothing short of a miracle.”

Evil in Oklahoma: Exorcisms on the rise
http://kfor.com/
POSTED 10:35 PM, NOVEMBER 14, 2014, BY LANCE WEST

OKLAHOMA CITY - The bible is clear.  “The devil prowls like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

We see it everywhere, everyday.

Pastor Kelly Tiger believes the devil came calling to his Watonga, Oklahoma church recently.

“There was a snakeskin wrapped around this pulpit. Our pulpit bible was stabbed with a knife. You can see the holes. On this wall beneath the picture they had wrote God hates us. With the graffiti and what was done, someone had to know something about devil worshipping.”

Pastor Everett Cox is a professional demonic “exterminator”.

Through Deliverance Ministries, he has devoted his life to casting out evil spirits.

He told us,” If I’m in a spiritual war like this, maybe I better learn how to shoot. I’ve never seen a head turn 360 degrees. We’ve had plenty of outcries, people thrashing out of chairs, and they tend to be violent.”

Sybol Day brought her “devilish” 5-year-old grandson here after repeated, unexplained outbursts.

The family tried everything, from psychiatrists to prescription drugs.

Day explained, “I said, you’ve tried everything else. Let’s try Jesus. And so we did.”

“Be it noted that during the rape, (the victim) was crying which would establish that the sexual intercourse was against her will,” nagkanayon si Inovejas sa iyang resulosyun.
