Quote"So sabi ko, 'Bakit ko pag-aaralan ang religion, eh iyang mga Espanyol na 'yan ang nagpahirap sa ating bayan no'ng araw?' So itong pagbabalik-Islam ko, tamang-tama, dahil dito sa Islam, tinatanggap ang pagmamahalan namin ni [girlfriend]," said Aguilar, whose Muslim name is Abdul Farid.

Mr. Aguilar, yes the Christian faith may have come to the Philippines through the Spaniards and may not be a 'native' religion, however, I can assure you that Islam does not qualify a 'native' religion as well. Islam, which came to the Philippines by way of the Majapahit Empire (a political entity that ruled most of Java, Borneo, Sulawesi, Sumatra) through Arab traders and Arab Islamic proselytizers. Islam is not a native religion of the Philippines, but a native religion of the Arab world.

Mr. Aguilar, centuries prior to the arrival of the first Christian conquistadore or Muslim scholar to the Philippines, there were Hindus, Buddhists. The first and original religion in the Philippine Islands were the animist / shamanist belief systems. The religion that taught of the existence of the diwatas, enkantos. Proto-malays that settled the Philippines were polytheists who believed in spirits and conducted ancestral worship. They did not worship a monotheistic concept of a god. That was a foreign influence.

QuotePresidential Decree No. 1083, which recognizes the system of Filipino Muslim laws, provides that "any Muslim male at least 15 years of age and any Muslim female of the age of puberty or upwards and not suffering from any impediment under the provisions of this Code may contract marriage."

The provision further reads: "A female is presumed to have attained puberty upon reaching the age of fifteen."

hmmm, there are females that reach puberty at age of 12. so, would this mean that a man let us say hypothetically 59 years of age (and is a recent convert to islam) can marry a 12-year old "woman" ?

'Nandito na ako'

Asked if he is ready to stand by his decision -- converting to Islam and marrying his partner -- Aguilar said, "Nandito na ako. Ako po ay kilala ninyo sa paninindigan."

"Hindi po ako gagawa ng bagay na ikasisira ng matagal ko nang inaalagaang pangalan. At matagal ko narin pong hinahanap ang tunay na paniniwala sa Panginoon, at sa palagay ko po, sa tagal kong paghahanap, ay ito na po, natagpuan ko na," he said.

On the subject of having babies -- the couple have been candid about their plans of building a family of their own -- Aguilar said, "Kung ako ang masusunod at pahihintulutan ako ni Allah, eh kahit isa lang."

Aguilar has six children from different relationships with the youngest being 24 years old.

He separated from his third wife he married when she was just 17, almost 10 years ago.

"Gusto ko talaga ang maging bunso kong anak ay lalaki," Aguilar said. "Pero kung may pangarap si misis na mas marami pa doon, syempre susunod ako sa kanya!"

New life as Abdul Farid

He was also quick to reply when the subject of his conversion to Islam was brought up, saying he had long been reconsidering his faith.

While Aguilar did not mention it, Maguindanao Governor Esmael Mangudadatu said in an interview before the wedding that the singer became a Muslim about six months ago.

Mangudadatu, a good friend of Aguilar, was one of the principal sponsors of the wedding.

He added: "Kaya saan ako pupunta? Doon ako pupunta sa tumatanggap sa relasyon namin. Hindi 'yon ang dahilan. Ang dahilan -- ipakita na talagang nagmamahalan kami."

Mangudadatu explained that under Islamic practices, a couple can marry as soon as the woman has her first menstruation.

Presidential Decree No. 1083, which recognizes the system of Filipino Muslim laws, provides that "any Muslim male at least 15 years of age and any Muslim female of the age of puberty or upwards and not suffering from any impediment under the provisions of this Code may contract marriage."

What can we expect from him?

Goldberg’s previous diplomatic postings make him well-placed to lead the U.S. Embassy in Manila, one of the largest U.S. embassies in the world. The Manila mission employs about 300 Americans and 1,000 Foreign Service national employees.

As the former head of the Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Goldberg possesses technical knowledge that could be useful to U.S. efforts in assisting the Philippines’ counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts.

Ambassador Goldberg will face the challenge of addressing the South China Sea maritime territorial dispute between China and the Philippines within the framework of the U.S.-Philippine alliance.  Secretary of State John Kerry has expressed support for Manila’s efforts to bring the dispute to a United Nations tribunal during a telephone call with Philippine foreign secretary Albert Del Rosario, and the Senate on July 29 unanimously approved a resolution calling for the peaceful resolution of maritime and territorial disputes in the East and South China Seas.

My brothers, if anyone among you should stray from the truth and someone bring him back, he should know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

-James 5:19-20

Helping someone to leave their sinful lifestyle behind can be challenging.  Simply confronting them about their sins can be frightening.  What do we gain by approaching them?  According to today's verse, more than we might realize.

In many verses, we are told to help others on their journey of faith - even correcting them when they need it, but it's more difficult than it sounds.  No one likes to be corrected.  No one likes to have their mistakes pointed out to them.

Still, we must do it.  We cannot sit idly by as our brothers and sisters are led astray.  We have to take the courageous step of trying to bring back a sinner.

God realizes that this will not help us win any popularity contests.  He sees that it will be a challenge, and for this reason, seems to offer us encouragement through today's verse.  By correcting others, we are doing the will of God, and He will recognize us for it when the time comes.

Do you have the courage to bring back a sinner?  It is a difficult challenge, but there are great rewards for them - and even for you.
