I have started reading but was not able to complete Ambeth Ocampo's explanation. He talked about it in his column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

It's not clear whether Rizal's house was originally painted white. And the actual building which now stands is actually a reconstruction of the original which was razed by fire.

Oh but sometimes our reactions bring about very painful headaches. To be honest, i was actually afraid of this girl. Afraid of her wrath. lol.

GEC, have you ever been put in a similar situation?

Unfortunately for me, Lorenzo, my lab partner back then was not as ravishing as the one you had  ;D

I think what the guard meant was "Day Tour Fee."

There are resorts that discourage drop-in customers or day tourers for a variety of reasons: maintain the privacy of their guests, keep a close tab on overhead expenses (which can be very well calculated if the number of guests are known before hand by booking online), create a sense of secluded ambiance... whatever.

A similar fee is called "entrance fee" which can be either fully or partially consumable in the payment of food or use of facilities. This is not meant to discourage but only to control the number of drop in customers.

I liked the film's ending better than the novel. It was more plausible.

But it was definitely better in the book when it came to explaining the significance of the "anti-matter". The scientists at CERN have recreated the "big bang" which is the point of creation, when matter existed, and which also marked the creation of its opposite, the anti-matter.  Here, God's existence was scientifically proven. It harmonized science and religion. But this was also used as the springboard for the Illuminati's revenge to the Catholic Church.

You had the chance to fully appreciate the anagrams in the book. An anagram is a word which reads the same way even if turned upside down. I doff my hat to the artist (I've been trying to fashion an anagram of my name but no success yet up to now). In the film, the anagrams branded on the chest of cardinals were shown only for a few seconds. The fifth sign in the film was different from the fifth sign in the book. I was more impressed of the book's fifth sign. It gave me the goosebumps and made me appreciate the artist's talent even more.

It may be acceptable to give a certain degree of tolerance in the spirit of artistic creativity in singing the National Anthem.  But I don't think it is proper to fix by legislation a new way of singing the Lupang Hinirang.

We should stick to the original version because, in the words of historians, the original tempo has already been "sanctified".

Just like the Holy Scriptures. There may be different translations but the original languages in which it was written should always be undisturbed.

Now if only I could sing it in Spanish like Lorenzo did  ;D

Technology / Yahoo Closes Geocities for Good
May 03, 2009, 12:25:24 AM
Yahoo is to close its personal web hosting site GeoCities later this year.

In a statement, the firm says it will no longer be accepting new customers and will focus on helping "customers build new relationships online".

Yahoo bought GeoCities for $3.57bn at the height of the dotcom boom in 1999.

At its peak, GeoCities boasted millions of active accounts, but it has since fallen out of fashion, with users migrating to social networking sites.

Yahoo says that existing GeoCities accounts will remain live for now, although it stresses that users should start looking for alternative sites. - BBC

Technology / A 500GB Optical Disc? The New DVD
May 03, 2009, 12:23:54 AM
A disc that can store 500 gigabytes (GB) of data, equivalent to 100 DVDs, has been unveiled by General Electric.

The micro-holographic disc, which is the same size as existing DVD discs, is aimed at the archive industry.

But the company believes it can eventually be used in the consumer market place and home players.

Blu-ray discs, which are used to store high definition movies and games, can currently hold between 25GB and 50GB.

Micro-holographic discs can store more data than DVDs or Blu-ray because they store information on the disc in three dimensions, rather than just pits on the surface of the disc. - BBC

The computer company that has in the past taken on the grandmasters of chess is now turning its attention to the famed US trivia quiz show Jeopardy.

In a head-to-head challenge of man versus machine, IBM will pit a supercomputer named Watson against human contestants.

Watson is a new question-answering system based on natural language.

"The aim is to get Watson to think and interact in human terms," IBM's Dr David Ferrucci told BBC News.

"It will try to understand a user's question and intent and understand it at a rudimentary level and provide and accurate and confident answer."

For the past two years scientists have been working on perfecting the system that will drive Watson, named after IBM founder Thomas J Watson Snr.

"The most challenging aspect of this is that Watson has to know what it knows with utmost confidence.

"Otherwise if it buzzes in and gets the answer wrong that is bad on Jeopardy because you lose money and lose the game," explained Dr Ferrucci, an IBM artificial intelligence researcher and team leader on the project. - BBC

An engineer in Cornwall delivered his baby son after watching an instructional video on YouTube.

Marc Stephens watched the videos as a precaution when his wife Jo started to feel some discomfort.

Four hours later, his wife went into labour and started giving birth before an ambulance could arrive at their home in Redruth.

"I Googled how to deliver a baby, watched a few videos and basically swotted up," Mr Stephens told the BBC.

Jo Stephens said they had planned a home birth, but not quite in this manner.

"I woke up and realised I was having contractions every five minutes," Mrs Stephens said.

"I woke Marc up and we phoned the midwife, but they were all so busy they couldn't come round to our house and told us to call an ambulance. But before it arrived, it all started."

Preparation

A few hours earlier, Mr Stephens has been reading up on home births and how to cope with anything unexpected.

"The videos gave me peace of mind. I think I would have coped, but watching videos made things much easier." - BBC

World Daily News / Swine Flu Pure Media Hype?
May 02, 2009, 11:55:57 PM
Mexico has revised down the suspected death toll from swine flu from 176 to 101, indicating that the outbreak may not be as bad as was initially feared.

Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova told the BBC that, based on samples tested, the mortality rate was comparable with that of seasonal flu.

The news came as Mexico continues a five-day shutdown in an attempt to contain the spread of the virus.

Italy reported its first case, bringing the number of countries affected to 17.

In Egypt, authorities have begun in earnest the slaughter of more than 300,000 pigs, in what was originally described as a precaution against swine flu.

Officials now say the move is a general health measure aimed at restoring order to Egypt's pig-rearing industry. - BBC

I love this fight. I think it's going to be a great fight. I also think, that with all the talk about boxing and defense and technique that we've seen on HBO's 24/7 series, these two guys essentially like to fight. And when the bell rings, they will fight -- not box. Given that scenario, I think Ricky Hatton will be too big and too strong for Manny. He was 106 pounds when he turned pro and 112 when he won his first title. He was brilliant against the bigger Oscar De La Hoya, but the difference here is that Ricky is still in his prime, Oscar was nowhere near it. I think Hatton wins a close decison.

Ricky will be trying to work his man onto the ropes, keep the fight from the center of the ring. He may even succeed at times, but I think that Pacquiao's rapid fire, no let-up punching will prove too much for the rugged Brit to contain. There may be a bit of blood from the sharp-boned Hatton and a late round TKO on cuts is very possible. Manny by TKO, 9th or 10th round.

I think Pacquiao is at his peak coming in to the fight this weekend. His speed and accuracy will put him over the top and he'll cement his spot as the sports pound-for-pound king. Prediction: Pacquiao over Hatton by KO in the 8th.

Manny P. with a fifth-round stoppage, followed by Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley running down the street and hugging in Lake Bellagio a la Rocky III.

Pacquiao on points. I anticipate a good action fight. If manny engages inside, he might get beaten. If he fights inside and outside, his speed will be the difference.
