at any rate, the federal system is a welcome development

I personally like the idea of re-organizing the provinces into states. Better to collectively pull the resources of 5 or so provinces into one state. The federalist system seems quite similar to that of India's.

Looking forward to hearing more news about this topic.

the shift to Federal system could prolly change the status of Pinas--the only sad thing is that the same trapo (traditional politician--i hope not spoiled calamay in a new packaging :) there :)
) will prolly be holding the key positions with too much politics, too much bureacracy and too much lip service and too much graft and corruption)

I hope the federal system will be a clean slate for us Pinoy. and to bring back the economy to its  well-oiled machine performance back in the 60s-70s. but that's a wishful thinking *sigh*

but knowing Cebu, the lawmakers will do anything to put the state congress in the queen city. it's practical also. unless the bridge connecting cebu and bohol is finished...

Hi Scott,

Stress can come in good economic times--when workload increases and individual and company competition heats up. In this case, perks such as welfare benefits and free gym passes can do a lot to defuse pent-up tension.

But this time, the social stress in Japan comes from economic anxieties. Those who were used to the vaunted Japanese lifetime employment system and the anticipation of comfortable retirement suddenly find themselves on the brink of uncertainty. Even travel becomes a luxury when the fear of job loss hangs in your mind.

If only I could get the Japanese to travel to Bohol to unwind...

Japan used to be the TOP market in Philippine Tourism a decade ago. Now, Koreans are taking the spot. probably that explains why the figure declines.
#126
Quote from: benelynne on April 29, 2008, 12:40:27 PM
In the finely manicured city that I live in--Tsukuba City--there are so many houses and residential buildings being built. And yet everyday all you hear from the Japanese and foreigners alike is the hardship of life. I simply doubt if there is an economic wellspring hidden somewhere that provides for all these developments, but I am afraid Japan is indeed following  the trails of the mortgage crisis in the U.S.

A businesswoman friend of ours who bought a house of her own recently folded up and gave up the place for foreclosure.

some suburbs in the U.S. have actually become a headache after the mortgage crisis. mora nag ghost town as what the in-depth report of The Atlantic shares.

the trend now is that u.s. families are moving back to the city--near to their workplaces, recreational places and good schools. the younger families that is. the baby boomer's era is already taking the backseat.

have you ever heard of a news reporter who got FIRED because he/she got her sources from an email. true. here goes. in the email, it says that POPE John Paul II died already. (the time the Pope JP II was in critical condition). The reporter lifted the email for his/her news report and it even made a banner headline in a local paper. it turned out it was  a hoax. AND WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? THE REPORTER GOT FIRED! and the editor, as well, I guess.

i don't know if this one still holds water today: that there is a high suicidal rate among Japanese teens brought about by stress in University admission. I read that research abstract way way back in college.

meanwhile, one trend in major corporations these days is the inclusion of "welfare" or holistic development program in employees' perks--like the company pays for the membership to fitness gyms (of its workers). some even put up their own company fitness gym. in the case cited above, just like what we are planning here at school--a boxing ring would be good to release anger, stress and what-not. besides, it's a good sport to burn those flab. tee-hee!

one latest research finding reveals that TRAVEL occupies the TOP SLOT in the most preferred perk or incentive among employees. And I absolutely agree.

to scott: that's life. when you enter showbiz or entetainment it is like an aquarium. if you don't know how to swim, malumos ka.

you can't say that we're happy of other's misfortune.

it's just as a person, it's nice to talk people specially those who become part in the society.

i've been part in the showbiz and entertainment industry and I know the trend there...I know it's a hell there and you need to play well your cards. and in showbiz, mawala jud ka if wala kay kapit or daghan ka pang kakompetensya nga anad pa nimo.

Hi Leo.

Yes. That's absolutely showbiz. Scandal-ridden and what-not. GOOD OR BAD PUBLICITY is still PUBLICITY. I should know.

But for the life of me, I was still hoping that TB guys here show a little positive humanity.

Gi jaga jaga an na man gud! Lali man kag "OKAY LANG DAW INGON ANA NA ANG SITWASYON (mag drive ug jeep ug backhoe) KAY PARA MAHIMONG TOURIST ATTRACTION POD SA LUNGSOD!?!" di na sad na mahimo oist. That's below the belt!

You know how things could backfire. So there.

Not really. Disappointed lang on how people make a circus out of somebody's misfortune. Call it freedom or what-not but there is always "responsibility" that goes with it.

This is a public forum and it goes without saying nga it's accessible to everyone. The liability is also heavy. Ang sa ako lang, kung wala lay masulti nga nindot ba, hilum na lang unta. Kung dili gani itabi na lang behind closed doors. hahays!

"Specific names were mentioned. What one luminary did to another luminary was mentioned. And mostly with, as I said, scandal-fashion. The details of what this Cyclonetrading wrote would make Lolit Solis look like a writer and commentarist for the Disney Channel," my multiply online buddy danikook shares on his blog.

And by golly, the long dead statesmen will send those involved in the ZTE scandal and the so-called "Philippine high society" for some post-mortem spanking.

"So, which is better, Canon or Nikon?"

Friends who come to me for my two-cents worth leave more confused than before.

Though I've always been a Nikonite for almost a decade, I can’t bet my 13th month pay since I really haven’t gotten in depth with both cameras.

Every Sinulog, the image of professional peer of photographers with their bazooka of lenses and their Nikon babies helps put Nikon a notch higher, if at all. But you know how politics and soft advertising play in this circle.

In January this year, I met a Manila-based photographer, a National Geographic photo contest winner at that, who told me it's not about the toy but it's on how you see thingsâ€"the eye, the angle for the out-of-the-ordinary. I definitely agree with him. He has a Nikon toy by the way.

In one thread I've read, one commented that Canon bites the pie share more than Nikon because of advertising. Canon's core branding, brand recall and all that jazz are doing their magic perhaps. And another one wrote that in the long haul, the investment ain't really about the body (I'm referring to the camera, of course. Silly!) anymore, but the lenses or glass in photographers' parlance.

With a little help from this link, next time a friend comes up to me and get my two-cents worth, I will no longer just say "er, it depends on your needs as a hobbyist or it's like choosing between a nokia and a sony-erickson phone" or worse, "an apple and banana."

Another link goes technical and scientific about the DLSR in the market today. In the end, as they say it here at the workplace-- "IT'S UP TO YOU, really."

As for me, a trip to Hidalgo St. in Quiapo is already tucked in my planner. My loyalty has paid off.

Hi Kyle~

Found this entry only a few heartbeats earlier.

I've been up and about these past couple of months.

I relocated to a new workplace, new location. Quite busy in setting some important stuff. I'm pretty much getting the hang of things already. And good thing, this place, though tucked in the slope of a mountain, away from the city, has wi-fi connection. 24/7. So there :)

Extend my warm regards to your Mom and to the whole family.

I laughed out loud the first time I saw the youtube video. And rolled to the floor once I found out she won the title!

But after much thought, even the US President--in a Time Magazine article--has grammar slips and he earned degrees from Ivy League Schools (Yale and Harvard Business School).

It's so sad how people judge her from just one single cliche of a question. There could be worse than that in a barangay or barrio or town or kapilya or what-not beauty contests but wasn't captured in video.

And finally, my two-cents worth--she could have saved her ass from the embarrassment if only she answered in Tagalog or whatever her native tongue is, otherwise, SHE SHOULD DO HER HOMEWORK. DUH!

Poems and Poets / Reply: last trip

i've trailed your thoughts
pacing my breath verse by verse
wave after wave
imagining your last word
dissolving between shadow and light
in the bottomless deep

realizing you're actually perched
atop a stool before your laptap
i think you've taken me
for a (boat) ride

RV, nice poetry. This should go well with a photo background of the elements.

Thanks Sir.
A ride during the season of loss, search, having back and season of loss again. life is good~

Poems and Poets / last trip [revised]
January 22, 2008, 05:19:52 PM
Last Trip
crossing Tañon Strait

Thirty minutes is a drag yet too short
To wipe dry the salt spray pricking
A wound about to heal, so

I write this letter in my head and tell you
How we've changed. How the wave and
Monsoon wind pelt the starboard of the barge.
How the air reeks of ammonia and
Spoiled lunch. Of how the sole seagull
Fathoms the madness of the afternoon
And of how fast moving clouds span
The froth, the breadth of the sea,
The vastness of the sky

In transit, in between shadow and light
Should all else fail, at the very least
I’ve written, in draft
This first and last letter
That you will read,
Not in the dark, not

Far beyond
The last bus stop.

MANILA, Philippines -- The city of Baltimore in Maryland, USA will be hiring 178 more public school teachers from the Philippines by summer, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) disclosed Monday.

The embassy reported to the DFA that officials of the Baltimore City Public School Board informed assistance to nationals (ATN) officer lawyer Loy Cortel, welfare officer Oliver Flores and consul Rico Fos about the decision to hire more teachers during a meeting.

The embassy officials met with the school board to discuss the case of 12 Filipino teachers reportedly in danger of being sent home because the board will no longer sponsor their employment visas due to lack of funding.

Addressing the poverty problem of the country takes addressing first the “poverty of the mindset.”

This was one of the opening statements of Dr. Francis Kong, CEO of FunWorks Inc. and one of the country’s renowned inspirational speakers and authors, explaining how the mindset of people contributes to the worsening problems of the country.

Dr. Kong said everything starts in the mind, and that “the people today are the products of the decisions they made yesterday.” He spoke of three gaps that stand as roadblocks to achieving success and addressing the problem of poverty.

The first is the “skills gap”. He said the challenge to academic institutions in the Philippines is to churn out graduates with the rights skills for the corporate world. The inability of institutions to develop relevant and emerging skills in their graduates passes on the burden of training to the employer. This, Dr. Kong, explained, costs the organization large sums of money.

The second is the “values gap”. He said a growing number of young people ruin their lives with how they have themselves influenced by culture and the things around them. To crystallize his point, he mentioned a businessman who shared with him statistics on items that are most salable in his relative’s convenience store located near a call center. It caught the attention of students, who guessed coffee was most salable, when Dr. Kong revealed that it was condoms.

The third is the “leadership gap”. While success is easy, he said succession is not. The present society now, he said, needs to breed a culture of leadership within the young people. The retirement of older, more experienced executives leave management responsibilities to the younger generation. But while there may be a mix of talent and creative minds under the top bracket of the organizational structure, there is a need for leadership to be enhanced to raise the standards. When those at top level management fail to innovate and raise the standards, the development at the bottom will be limited as top level management serves as the lid or ceiling of growth.

Dr. Kong advised the participants in the National MDG Summit for Young Filipino Leaders to continue learning even outside the school. He said learning is better when it becomes a commitment instead of a requirement for compliance to people.

He also stressed on the importance of attitude over skills, reminding students that as they strive to be successful, they should do so without comprising their integrity and values.

Dr. Kong gives an average of 300 talks every year.
