Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)
Artist: Christopher Cross

Once in your life you find her
Someone that turns your heart around
And next thing you know you're closing down the town
Wake up and it's still with you
Even though you left her way across town
Wondering to yourself, "Hey, what've I found?"

When you get caught between the Moon and New York City
I know it's crazy, but it's true
If you get caught between the Moon and New York City
The best that you can do ......
The best that you can do is fall in love

Arthur he does as he pleases
All of his life, he's mastered choice
Deep in his heart, he's just, he's just a boy
Living his life one day at a time
And showing himself a really good time
Laughing about the way they want him to be

When you get caught between the Moon and New York City
I know it's crazy, but it's true
If you get caught between the Moon and New York City
The best that you can do .....
The best that you can do is fall in love

When you get caught between the Moon and New York City
I know it's crazy, but it's true
If you get caught between the Moon and New York City
The best that you can do .....
The best that you can do is fall in love

Kay sa ako nga analysis pag i divide ang juta mo gamay nalang siya which is dili na pwede ma agri-cultural, ma convert nalang ni siya residential zone.
Means we need more manpower to get the same output before..kado nga sayop nga mathematics.

ive read an article that...

Filipinos pay more for rice, as much as P66 billion, than if they had bought the staple at world-market prices, according to a new World Bank report.

“Since the consumer rice price was 55 percent higher than the border parity price, Filipinos have spent an excessively high percentage of their expenditure on rice,” according to the World Bank said in a report titled “Philippines: Agriculture Public Expenditure Review.” Fifty-five percent is the average gap between domestic and world rice prices....

shame to us who was once a rice exporter, we even host the international rice research institute...and yet we pay for one of the most expensive rice in the world. shame, shame, and shame..

Forex reserves to surpass target
By Des Ferriols
Wednesday, September 5, 2007

With the country’s gross international reserves (GIR) already hitting the $30-billion level this year, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) officials said the forex reserves will surpass the projected medium term level of $25 to $30 billion.

BSP Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. had projected that over the medium term, the country’s GIR could go up to as high as $30 billion over the next five years, providing ample cushion against market volatility that threaten vulnerable emerging economies.

However, Tetangco said that since the GIR is already hitting this level this early, there is a possibility that the forex reserves would surpass the $30-billion mark.

Although the country’s reserve was not nearly as large as the major markets in the region, Tetangco said it was on a trajectory that would bring the total stock to more than $30 billion over the medium term.

Tetangco said the projection is consistent with the expected expansion in foreign exchange requirements of an expanding economy with brisk exports and steady inflow from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

“This is assuming that we would stay in the current trajectory of macro-economic fundamentals,” Tetangco said. “It would not be difficult to see that our reserves would continue to expand in that case.”

At present, the country’s GIR is already at record levels, amounting to over $30 billion and the BSP expressed confidence that this was enough reserves to weather the fallout from the subprime crisis in the US.

Tetangco earlier said the build-up of the reserves over the medium term would support the expansion of the economy.

“The bigger the economy, the higher the reserves that we have to build up,” Tetangco said. “When you are on an expansion path, building that up would just be the natural result of economic expansion if it is well-grounded on strong fundamentals.”

The BSP said earlier that although it was also costly to hold on to high reserve levels, a higher foreign exchange stock would provide an even bigger safety net against market volatility.

One of the basic principles in reserve management, according to BSP officials, was that no reserve was too big. Although it could be costly to hold so much reserve the dangers were bigger if there was not enough.

“The accumulation of reserves is a form of insurance against factors that are largely unexpected,” said the BSP. “Since our fundamentals are good at this point, having ample reserves would give us enough cushion and we have tended to avoid further depreciation of our currency.”

Tetangco for his part said that inflows from overseas Filipinos and investments would sustain the country’s balance of payments surplus, possibly at record levels.

Because of strong inflows, the BSP had upgraded its 2007 projections and indicated that the country’s balance of payments surplus could reach a record high of $6.313 billion this year.

According to Tetangco, there were indications that economic activity over the next few years would be able to sustain this trajectory based on the momentum of the past two years.

“I think we’ll continue to realize balance of payment surpluses, maybe not as high as what we’re expecting this year, but there is a momentum,” Tetangco said.

according to our PDOS 94% of us the OFW's are unsuccesful, try to ask yourself countrymen, try...

There are many Overseas Filipino Workers who work abroad for many years but are not successful and no investments were acquired by the time that they have already retired.

The worst situation is that there are some OFWs who have been in an accident overseas which prevented them from working again. Regardless of working in or outside the Philippines, Filipino worker should know how to value his labor and sacrifices while aiming for his dreams.

The following tips are worth reading that will serve as guides for typical Overseas Filipino Workers. Information given is based on my own experiences and from the experiences of other fellow Overseas Filipino Workers.

How to succeed as an OFW

1. Do not spend too much of your income. Not because you are earning big now and you have extra money, you are going to spend too much for your vices and unnecessary things. Some Filipinos who are only on a temporary working visa are buying luxury and brand new cars which I think is not necessary. If your earnings are high, it should be okay but I know some Overseas Filipino Workers who buy expensive and brand new cars but do not have any investment on important properties yet. They could not even eat proper meals anymore as luxury is more important to them. They are not thinking that their job abroad is just temporary, anytime they can be sent back home if some unpleasant situation happened such as war, bankruptcy, slow economy or as I have mentioned above, when they become paralyzed and couldn’t work anymore after an accident.

2. Always keep some income for savings. Save some of your income in Philippine banks as well as banks in the country where you work. And because you will stay abroad for about two years or more, it’s better that you’ll keep your money in a term of savings where you can earn more interest such as Time Deposit or Funds. Some Philippine banks offer special savings program for Overseas Filipino Workers and their beneficiaries.

3. Obtain pension plans for retirement, savings fund, children's educational plan, health insurance or life insurance. Get more if you can, although you already have the OWWA Benefits or Social Security Insurance (SSS) or Pag-Ibig, it is also better to get another one from private insurance company.

It is not always safe to work anywhere, you will never know if you can have an accident in the future that will prevent you to engage in any kind of jobs again. Having some insurance is always a big help.

4. Once you start receiving your salary and suppose you have no debts to pay anymore, make sure you would invest in a property first. If you will buy some property, its’ value does not go down; it's always accumulating or increasing every year. House and Lot or Lot is the best investment of all.

5. If you want to build a house, unless you already got many houses, it is better to build an apartment first to have some additional income. Your wife/husband is in Philippines can take care of your property in case you want them to be a commercial or residential apartment for rent.
If you are earning from the rental of your apartment, you may now save your income and with some additional money from the last few years of working abroad, you can build a new house again for your family.

6. Do not give so much allowance to your beneficiaries that could only make them spend your remittance for unnecessary things as well. You should let them know how hard it is to work in a foreign land and earn that money that you are sending for them. You should let them know how to spend wisely as well.

Do not stay quiet or ashamed to tell and explain how hard it is to work as Overseas Filipino Workers abroad to your family. If they do not know about your real situation, they would just think that you are just "collecting" money while you're walking on the road. So, they would just spend your remittance on things that are unnecessary.

7. If you cannot bring your family while you are working abroad and your vacation is not yet due, why not try bringing them to your country of work. Sometimes, you need to spend a little to maintain the relationship and bonding of your family.

8. If you are on vacation, do not spend all your savings thinking that you still have a job in abroad upon returning there. It is not always like that. I have someone that I knew, who had bought brand new car, spent most of his savings while on vacation but by the time that this fellow overseas Filipino worker is now going back to work abroad, his employer's company suddenly closed. He did not know that the company was already failing and facing bankruptcy.

9. Rather than spending too much of your savings on less important things, just improve your skills. You will never know that your current job will still be on demand after one or two years. You should try to be knowledgeable of other types of skills and profession.

If you are a carpenter, acquire some skills that could help you to become a contractor just in case you want to have your own business and would like to get your own carpenter to do the jobs.

10. Do not start your own business if you do not have any idea about the business. Do not just listen with other people’s suggestions, think about it. It is not because having an Internet Cafe is one of the good businesses these days, you will engage yourself with that same business even you do not know anything about computers.

If you have an experience in carpentry jobs, start business that is related to carpentry such as cabinet making, construction materials retail, painting etc. Do not engage in other kinds of business unless you have also experienced it before. This is not the proper way to do business. Put up a business that you are familiar with and that you most love to do.

Romulo: RP growth ready for competitive world trade

By Cynthia Balana
Inquirer
Last updated 11:00pm (Mla time) 09/04/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo said on Tuesday the Philippines would send a "clear and strong message" to members of the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Conference (APEC) about its long-term economic achievements and preparedness to compete economically on a global scale.

"Our message to Australia and the world is: the Philippines means business; our growth will be sustained; we are here for the long term. It is time the world takes notice," Romulo said in his departure statement.

Romulo will attend the APEC Ministerial Meeting from September 5 to 9, 2007 in Sydney, Australia, a prelude to the summit of the APEC heads of state.

In his speech, Romulo stressed that quarterly performance since 2001 showed the resiliency and robustness of the Philippine economy.

"Our fiscal and economic reforms have taken root and are showing concrete results: our 2007 second quarter economic growth is the fastest in two decades; we have had consecutive quarterly growth since 2001," he stressed.

Romulo said globalization provided opportunities for shared growth but also laid bare deep development gaps that still needed to be overcome.

"We live today in an increasingly interdependent world, where challenges are inter-related and whose solutions similarly require an integrated and interlinked approach," he said.

"Challenges from the traditional to the emergent -- have taken on a global character and solutions call on all stakeholders to decide and move collectively and swiftly," he said.

These realities, he said, underscored the need for continuing dialogue and intensified cooperation in the pursuit of greater peace, progress and prosperity in the larger Asia-Pacific region.

He said the common resolve to face regional and global challenges through meaningful dialogue and greater cooperation would bind the members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

At the APEC Ministerial Meeting, Romulo said he would convey recent developments in the Philippines and share experiences, concerns and key positions on events and issues that affected the nation's and region's interests.

Romulo said that as an archipelago, the Philippines remained vulnerable to the effects of climate change despite efforts to protect the environment.

He said that sudden weather changes and the devastating effects of more frequent and powerful typhoons affected environments, drastically altered the lives of people and brought economic activity to a standstill.

"We have much at stake in ensuring that coordinated efforts in the region and beyond are made to mitigate and adapt to climate change. We can look into opportunities for greater cooperation in this area," he said.

Romulo said he would stress that growth and development did not have to be achieved at cost to the environment, the bedrock of all economies.

He said he would continue to encourage the revival of the Doha Development Round of world trade talks.

He said the multilateral trading system can and should be harnessed to benefit both the developing and developed economies.

Lastly, Romulo will call for a review of critical human security issues, including the need to increase capabilities of APEC countries to combat terrorism and respond to threats to public health.

Gov. Aumentado confident
in meeting airport deadline

By Katrina Mennen A. Valdez Reporter

The provincial government of Bohol is set to expropriate the remaining land requirement for the Panglao-Bohol International Airport worth P3.8 billion, to meet an April 2010 deadline, Gov. Erico Aumentado told The Manila Times.

“The local government has already acquired 60 percent of the total land requirement, which is 220 hectares. We expect to complete the land acquisition by December 31 this year,” Aumentado said. He admitted there was difficulty convincing some landowners to sell their properties.

“If some [landowners] will not agree to sell their land despite [our] efforts, the government will expropriate their properties just to meet the completion date,” he said.

The total cost of the project stood at P3.8 billion, which is considered a “sure deal” after business tycoon Lucio Tan paid P3 billion as part of Philippine Airlines’ payables to the MIAA as rental fees of the Centennial Airport, the Bohol Chronicle, a local newspaper reported.

Governor Aumentado said that the airport will be divided into two phases, the first one being the construction of a 2.5-kilometer runway, the building of the terminal, and the installation of the equipment. Phase 2 targets the construction of a 1 km runway to accommodate the 747 airbus.

Aumentado said that the bidding will start in first quarter of next year. In the event that the bidding finishes by the third quarter of 2008 the construction will immediately commence before the last quarter of the same year.

“The construction of phase 1 and phase 2 will be done simultaneously so that we could finish sooner,” he said.

Aumentado revealed that they are acquiring Panglao Island for only P60 per square meter, saying, “PGMA has already assured that the provincial fund will be reimbursed as soon as the Department of Transportation and Communication releases the money.”

Aumentado confirmed that Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, a member of the Saudi Royal family, who has the majority shares of CitiBank, is currently in talks with the Fonacier-family which owns one of the most popular resorts in the island, the Bohol Beach Club.

Other high-end hotel companies that have expressed interest in the island are the Boracay Regency Beach Resort, Belleview Hotel and Hilton Hotel.

Waterfront looks at Bohol for expansion

By Irene Sino Cruz
Visayas Bureau
Last updated 11:33pm (Mla time) 08/26/2007

CEBU CITY--The Waterfront Philippines Inc. (WPI) is looking at Bohol as a potential site for expansion.

WPI director Kenneth T. Gatchalian noted that the company has been looking for possible areas of expansion as the tourism industry has been on an upward trend.

Gatchalian said, in an interview, they considered Bohol the more lucrative destination due to its proximity to Cebu, a major tourist destination.

However, WPI chairman Renato B. Magadia said the short-term plans of the company would be to upgrade the existing facilities, and acquiring additional properties would be a long-term goal of the company.

Magadia also reported that the company posted P18.24 million in consolidated net income for 2006. However, this was lower than the consolidated net income of P42.96 million registered in 2005.

The company's total revenues in 2006 reached P1.913 billion, up from P1.804 billion in 2005.

The bulk of WPI's revenues came from the hotel operations, which reached P1.85 billion.

Of this amount, P646.171 million came from the group's room revenue while P629.964 million came from the food and beverage division.

Meanwhile, Gatchalian said the marketing team of the Waterfront Cebu City Casino Hotel Inc. would have to go on an aggressive campaign to increase its revenues from the convention and events market segment.

He said the WPI would upgrade the facilities of WCCCHI's convention center as well as come up with more attractive packages to attract more clients.

Meanwhile, the WPI posted P422 million revenues from its hotel operations in the first quarter of 2007, a 12.7-percent decrease from the figures of 2006's first quarter.

The company attributed the decrease of revenues to the 29-percent increase in costs and expenses.

The average food cost increased by 5.13 percent from 2006, the company said.

The company's occupancy percentage also went down to 67.97 percent as compared to 2006's first quarter rate, a decrease of 7.25 percent.

Talk of the Town / Rob suspect gunned down in Cebu
September 05, 2007, 12:51:38 PM
Rodulfo Atega Jr., whom a police team arrested in Bohol last Aug. 29 and brought to Cebu the following day, would have gone home last night, as he was earlier released on bail, but he was slain in the taxicab(above) that he and his family took to get to the pier. Two killers on a motorcycle did the work of executioners.

Rob suspect gunned down
By Mia E. Abellana Sun.Star Staff Reporter
With Jovy S. Taghoy

STILL clutching his discharge sheet from the Cebu City Jail, Rodulfo “Dupong” Atega Jr., 21, a suspected robber, was shot dead while he was inside a taxicab at the corner of Gen. Maxilom Ave. and D. Jakosalem St. about 7:45 last night.

Atega’s father Rodulfo Sr. told reporters that they had just come from the Cebu City Jail in Barangay Kalunasan. Atega was released at 7:25 p.m., as stated in the jail’s logbook.

Atega’s brother, girlfriend and uncle were also in the taxi.

They hailed a cab driven by Cerelino Alcordo, 35, and asked him to take them to Pier 3 where they planned to catch a boat for Bohol Province.

Alcordo, who drove the Vans System taxi, said that when they reached the corner leading to the Redemptorist Church, his passengers panicked and told him to drive faster.

Rodulfo Sr. said they noticed two men on a motorcycle following them, which was why they wanted Alcordo to lose them.

They would have gone straight down Gen. Maxilom Ave. to proceed to the pier area.

But since his passengers were already rattled, Alcordo turned right to a gasoline station and took a shortcut to D.
Jakosalem St.

Target

He would have gone faster, but oncoming vehicles forced him to slow down, allowing the two men on the motorcycle to catch up.

The motorcycle passenger leapt and proceeded to the left side of the taxi, while the driver drove to the right side.

Atega was seated at the leftmost side of the cab, behind the driver.

When the first shots were fired, Alcordo said all he could do was pull up the handbrake and run for his life.
“The gunshots were so loud, all I did was cover my ears,” he said in Cebuano.

Everyone else also panicked and fled, except Rodulfo Sr., who was in the front seat.

“I had difficulty opening the door. Everyone fled, even the driver. When I looked back, he was dead,” Rodulfo Sr. said.

Atega suffered two gunshot wounds in the head.

Insp. Mario Monilar, Homicide Section chief, told Sun.Star Cebu that Acting Cebu City Police Office Director Patrocinio
Comendador’s order to him was to prioritize the investigation on Atega’s killing.

Second

“Look at all angles,” Monilar quoted Comenda-dor as saying.

The assailants quickly fled to D. Jakosalem St. No one was able to see their faces as they both wore crash helmets.

Asked who he thought was behind the killing, Rodulfo Sr. said he was sure it was connected to his other son’s death.

Harris Atega was shot dead along Tormis St., Barangay Sambag 1, Cebu City last Jan. 10. Harris had been mistaken for a field training policeman.

Rodulfo Sr. said that even before Harris was buried, someone sent Atega a text message, telling him he would be next.

However, he is not sure why someone wanted his sons dead.

“It would have been better if we did not post bail),” Rodulfo Sr. said in Cebuano.

Police are considering the possibility that Atega was killed by the group of Albert Almedilla alias Way Sala, who was earlier tagged by Atega as the one who killed Harris.

Almedilla allegedly belongs to the Roy Fernandez robbery band, of which Harris was said to be a former member.

‘Cohorts’

Fernandez and Alme-dilla were among the cohorts mentioned by robbery group leader Cre-sencio “Bruts” Reguya when he was arrested in Tagbilaran City last Aug. 28.

Atega was arrested in his house in San Miguel, Bohol Province by a four-man team from the Cebu City Police Office last Aug. 29 based on a warrant for robbery issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Fortunato de Gracia.

Atega’s capture was made less than 24 hours after the arrest of robbery group leader Casimero “Meloy” Atega and three other members identified as Reguya, a former civilian military volunteer, Gilven Nuez and Sofronio Remoreras.

Atega had denied involvement in any of the robberies implicating him as one of the perpetrators. He also denied being a member of the Casimero Garcia Robbery Group.

Atega said it was not him but his brother Harris who belonged to the group.

Same style

It was Garcia who informed him and his family about the killing of Harris, Atega had said when he was presented to reporters.

Monilar observed that the manner of execution was similar to that of Brando Babao, who was shot dead after posting bail last July 24.

He said it is likely that the killers of Babao and Atega belong to the same group.

“The way it (Atega killing) was executed shows that the shooter was very skilled,” Monilar said.

Rodulfo Sr. said his son took a nautical course in Tagbilaran City but stopped because he began drinking with friends he met at school.

Atega also took up a care-giving course but stopped again after Harris was killed.

Rodulfo Sr. said his son was never involved in robberies.

Below is a map of the area where Atega was killed:

Arroyo set to match Marcos record on infrastructure spending

By Michael Lim Ubac
Inquirer
Last updated 10:01pm (Mla time) 09/04/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- By the time President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo steps down in 2010, her administration’s infrastructure spending could rival the record of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos’ New Society.

With the country’s economy growing at its fastest annual pace in 20 years, the President on Monday vowed to build more roads, repair dams and complete other infrastructure projects that would put the country on the road to First World status.

The 20-year Marcos administration carried out the most extensive infrastructure program ever launched, financed by deficit spending and foreign borrowing.

Arroyo said her administration would pour more money -- P13 billion -- to boost the agricultural sector.

In a speech at the inauguration of the Aulo Irrigation Project in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija, Arroyo said P8 billion would primarily go to irrigation and another P5 billion for the construction of farm-to-market roads next year.

She said that she had already asked Congress to increase the budget of the agriculture department, so that it can build 3,000 kilometers of rural roads and repair irrigation systems to benefit 1,000 farmlands.

“Kadalasan di lumalabas sa media ang ganitong mga biyayang nararandaman ng karaniwang magsasaka. Kaya naman narito [kami] upang talakayin ang mga programa at biyaya ng patubig at kalsadang bukid (Benefits like this for the farmer are not usually covered by media. This is why we are here to discuss the benefits of projects like irrigation and the building of rural roads),” Arroyo said.

The President said that due to the economic reforms she had instituted, the government had enough funds to allow the benefits of a strong economy trickle down to millions of Filipinos.

Untold Story No. 4

At a tender age of 17, Marcial was a war correspondent for The Manila Times. Marcial's war experience provided him with a treasure chest of stories which inspired him to write a movie screenplay. His screenplay was made into a movie, starring Jaime de la Rosa and a 16 year old actress named Dorothy. Helmed by renowned director Lamberto Avellana, the movie was a huge success. During the first FAMAS award ceremony in 1952, Dorothy received the first FAMAS trophy for best supporting actress for her role in the movie.

The only child of a US soldier and a Filipina, Dorothy was also a semi-finalist in the 1952 Miss Philippines beauty contest. It was therefore not surprising that Marcial got so enamored with Dorothy that he did everything to court her. Marcial even carried Dorothy's make-up kit during movie shootings. Marcial became Dorothy's dakilang alalay.

Dorothy studied pre-Law at the University of Santo Tomas but her booming movie career made it impossible for her to continue.

Likewise, Marcial took up Law at the University of the Philippines but the lure of journalism ended his dream of becoming a lawyer.

Marcial became known for his gift of gab and political skill. This led to his victory as a town mayor at a young age of 22. Meanwhile, Dorothy became popular for her acting prowess and dancing skill. This led to her victory in several acting derbies.

Marcial's younger sister was the director of the movie which won for Dorothy her last FAMAS best supporting actress award.

But while Philippine politics and show business naturally intertwine, political kingpin Marcial and movie queen Dorothy were not destined to be together.

Dorothy married a man named Victorino who fathered her only daughter. But their union did not last. After a series of unsuccessful relationships, Dorothy finally tied the knot again with an American B-movie actor-singer. In contrast, Marcial remained faithfully married all his life to an American-educated woman who bore his only son and four daughters.

But while Marcial survived the Korean War which he covered, he did not survive the war on the home front. Likewise, Dorothy did not survive her own war at home.

Both Marcial and Dorothy suffered violent deaths. Marcial was shot. Dorothy was stabbed several times. Committed 18 years apart, the separate murders of Marcial and Dorothy made headlines several years ago. However, both murders remained unsolved to this day. Some say that identifying their killers is not the issue because everyone, except the authorities, seems to know the identity of their respective killers. Rumors even abound that the masterminds in the murders of Marcial and Dorothy were related to them by affinity. But the real mystery lies in the fact that the perpetrators of these high-profile crimes remain scot-free to this day, despite the enormous clout which the victims' respective family wields.

Some say that Marcial's death was a result of his being branded a communist by the government. This is ironic because the screenplay which Marcial wrote and which won for Dorothy her first FAMAS trophy was the second in a trilogy of anti-communist movies which were produced by LVN Pictures in support of the government's efforts to fight communism.

Dorothy's shocking death led to embarrassing revelations about her painful personal battle. Marcial's equally shocking death led to well-deserved recognition of his heroic political battle.

Dorothy was killed amid rows of cars in the covered and dark parking lot of the Movie and Television Review
and Classification Board (MTRCB) building. Despite his escorts, Marcial was killed amid rows of airplanes in a wide open space in broad daylight while descending down the tarmac of what was then known as the Manila
International Airport (MIA).

Of course, we all know Dorothy was Dolphy's TV wife, Marsha.

And we all know Marcial was Cory's real-life husband, Ninoy.

Yes, Dorothy Jones was the real name of Nida Blanca. And yes, Marcial Bonifacio was the fictitious name on the passport of Benigno Aquino, Jr. on the day that he was murdered.

And you know the rest of their stories. . .

(UPDATE) Ousted journalist Malu Fernandez resumes writing

Agence France-Presse, INQUIRER.net
Last updated 11:11am (Mla time) 09/03/2007

A LIFESTYLE writer, who was earlier reported to have been hounded out of her job after she wrote a travel piece many readers found insulting to millions of Filipinos who work abroad, has resumed writing.

Malu Fernandez had earlier said that she quit her job as a columnist at the Manila Standard Today newspaper and People Asia magazine after her article "From Boracay to Greece!" provoked international outrage.

However, an article titled "Unseen evil on your dressing table" with her byline appeared on the newspaper's website and on its Monday issue.

Fernandez's earlier travel piece, which appeared in the June edition of the magazine and later in modified form in the newspaper, recounts her mock horror at finding herself in economy class surrounded by Filipino maids reeking of cheap cologne.

"I wanted to slash my wrist at the thought of being trapped in a plane with all of them," she wrote.

The column drew fire from across the universe of online diaries who denounced her for alleged bigotry.

Eight million Filipinos, including maids, seamen, construction workers and professionals, work abroad and sent a record seven billion dollars back to the Philippines in the six months of 2007.

Fernandez at first tried to deflect criticism of her article, saying in a subsequent newspaper column that it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek humor.

"If any of these people actually read anything thicker than a magazine they would find it very funny," she wrote.

"Although it may sound elitist to you the fact is this country is built on the foundation of haves, have-nots and wannabes. One group will never get the culture of the other."

However, Fernandez said she has since become the "target of death threats, hate blogs, and deeply personal insults" and felt the need to apologize and quit.

The Manila Standard Today had earlier confirmed that Fernandez no longer wrote for the paper. It was not immediately clear why she had resumed writing.

Poverty decreasing, new UN report says
By Christine F. Herrera
Manila Standard
http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?...ws1_sept3_2007

THE number of people living in extreme poverty in the Philippines is decreasing, with the proportion of families below the poverty threshold falling to 24.4 percent in July this year against 39.9 percent in 1990, a report says.

As a result, the Philippines has a “high chance of success” in achieving its goal of reducing the number of households living in extreme povertyâ€"or those that survive on less than $1 a dayâ€"from 39.9 percent in 1990 to 19.95 percent of the population by 2015, according to the United Nations’ midterm report on the Philippines’ Millennium Development Goals.

The Philippines’ Medium Development Goals are a set of time-bound targets for combating poverty, hunger, diseases, illiteracy, environmental degradation and discrimination against women, and they consist of eight goals, 18 targets, and 48 indicators covering the period 1990 to 2015.

The participants in the plan are the Executive and Legislative branches of government, national government agencies, local government units, the business sector, civil society groups and the academe.

The UN report, to be released worldwide this October, says the Philippines’ targets are “on track,” and that statistics point to economic gains having trickled down to the grassroots.

It says the Philippines also has “high chances of success” in its goal of reducing malnutrition and child mortality, promoting gender equality, combating HIV, AIDS, malaria and other diseases, and improving sanitation and access to safe drinking water by 2015.

But the UN says the Philippines must “closely watch” maternal mortality, access to reproductive health services, and curb its high population growth rate of 2.36 percentâ€"which brought the total number of Filipinos to 88.7 million as of July.

The UN says the proportion of the Philippine population below the poverty threshold was 45.3 percent in 1990, but that went down to 30 percent in July 2007 and is “on track” to slide further to 22.65 percent by 2015.

It says the Philippines also has “high chances of success” in reducing the number of households whose food intake is less than 100 percent, to 34.7 percent by 2015 from 56.9 percent now and 69.4 percent in 1990.

The Philippines should also be able to bring down the number of underweight children age zero to 5 to 17.25 percent by 2015, down from 24.6 percent in 2007 and 34.5 percent in 1990, the UN says.

It says the Philippines has also been successful in providing girls the same education opportunities as boysâ€"it has already surpassed its 2015 target as of this yearâ€"and dramatically reduced child and infant mortality.

The country has also been successful in combating HIV, AIDS and malaria and improving access to safe drinking water, which is now 80 percentâ€"up from 73.3 percent in 1990 and may reach the 2015 target of 86.8 percent.

But the UN describes the Philippines’ record in improving maternal health and in achieving universal primary education as poor.

HAHAHA... NAA KO ANA SA PINAS..

But id like too much in the soundtrack "Can You Read My Mind" by Maureen McGovern

Lyrics for: Can You Read My Mind

Can you read my mind?
Do you know what it is you do to me?
Don't know who you are
Just a friend from another star

Here I am like a kid at a school
Holding hands with a god, I'm a fool
Will you look at me quivering
Like a little girl shivering?
You can see right through me

Can you read my mind?
Can you picture the things I'm thinking of?
Wondering why you are
All the wonderful things you are

You can fly, you belong to the sky
You and I could belong to each other

If you need a friend,
I'm the one to fly to
If you need to be loved, (to be loved)
Here I am, read my mind

Instrumental Bridge

Will you look at me quivering
Like a little girl shivering?
You can see right through me

If you need a friend,
I'm the one to fly to
If you need to be loved,
Here I am, read my mind

Read my mind

Mag-Negosyo Kita KABAYAN

Globalpinoy Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises believes that a principal reason why the Philippines continues to lag behind its Asian neighbors in economic development is because of the lamentable absence of a wide-spread entrepreneurial orientation and a woeful lack of entrepreneurial skills among Filipinos. Even today, our youth are still brought up on the principle that the key to success is to get a good education preferably with impressive grades to be able to find good employment in big multinational companies. One look at our more successful Asian brothers will easily reveal that their economies were founded on local entrepreneurships, not employment.

There is therefore an urgent need to correct this anomaly that has left our country behind in economic development. This is most crucial as the whole world economy now faces the onslaught of globalization, a trend which cannot be stopped and will not be stopped.
Our country drastically requires the development of a mass-based entrepreneurial class if we are to survive globalization. A country of employees such as ours will always have a government that is beholden to multinational companies. On the other hand, a Philippines with a wide-based entrepreneurial class can exist on its own and could even wield companies hostage in this country.

Philippine Laws / Re: Filipinos Are No Longer Poor?
September 02, 2007, 01:14:31 PM
I have read some articles in the internet about the 7.5% growth ug ang comment pa gyud is that it is a big big lie pobre pa gihapon ang mga tao. I hope they were taught good economics in HS, we need not only a 7.5 in a quarter!!!!!! we need a continuous growth to see things work and in order to do that they need to shut up and work for it!!!!!!!!
Let us not be another burden.
According to economists, we need at least 7 percent for at least seven years or so to reduce poverty.
Let us start TODAY please we need it TODAY and hope for a better tomorrow and not put everything in contention.
