Weird and Extreme / Re: Boy Dad At 13
February 16, 2009, 08:42:14 PM
Update:

(CNN) -- A second teenager has reportedly claimed to be the father of a child born to a teenaged girl in a case which has caused an outcry in Britain.

British Conservative party leader David Cameron has expressed his dismay over the case.

According to reports earlier this week Alfie Patten was only 12 when the baby was conceived with his girlfriend, Chantelle Steadman, 15.

The Sun tabloid newspaper reported their daughter, Maisie Roxanne, was born on Monday.

It carried photos and interviews with the pair and their child on Friday and Saturday.

Alfie told the newspaper that he thought "it would be good to have a baby."

While Chantelle said they wanted to "prove to everyone" that they could give Maisie a "great future" and that they both planned to stay in school.

However, on Sunday the Sun's sister paper, the News of the World, reported that Richard Goodsell, aged 16, was claiming he was Maisie's father.

"I know I could be the father. Everyone thinks I am. My friends all tell me that baby has my eyes -- even my mum thinks so.

"Only a DNA test is going to sort this out properly. If I am the father, I have the right to know," he told the News of the World.

The situation has provoked a wide response, with Conservative party leader David Cameron telling the British Press Association that parenthood should not be something the teenagers should even have been contemplating.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said "all of us would want to avoid teenage pregnancies," PA reported.

Tony Kerridge, of the sexual health specialist Marie Stopes International, told PA that children needed better education.

The response from CNN readers ranged from outrage to questions about whether the situation was actually rare.

Allyson said exactly the same thing had happened in her home town.

"Well, this is not news to my area. We had this same thing happen five years ago. Same aged boy and girl. They had a little girl. The dad graduated from high school the year before his daughter started kindergarten! He has full custody as the mom has moved out of town and had another child. I am glad the family has supported this child even though the 'parents' didn't make a good decision in having a child so young."

Martha said she found the situation "very sad."

"I did not become a mom until I was 24 and it was still a struggle. I think these children's parents should be held accountable. Where were they? These kids have no idea what their lives will be like, finish school! Only if they are very lucky with a good support system."

Becky was dismayed.

"This just shocks me and makes me sick... they are still kids! Only 13 and 15 year old! So where are their parents?"

yeah... come to think of it... those tourists/visitors who come to Loboc to view the tarsier at very close range, to the point that most touch it, are paying a fee for the speedier death of these tarsiers.... tarsiers do not need to be 'cared'!!! they need to be left alone in their natural habitat...

I have been somewhat a volunteer at PTFI (Philippine Tarsier Foundation Inc.) when i was a student and I saw the hardships Manong Lito and his crew had to undergo. It was a sporadic ride for them managing the sanctuary since there has been not enough support. Why not support the correct way of handling tarsiers... than promote those kilid kilid ones?

But then again, i see where all this enthusiasm not to close those in Loboc... MONEY!
The greed for it just oozes out from all the orifices of these officials... enough said!

just shows inconsistency in the implementation of the rules... before i left almost two years ago, the helmet policy was strictly implemented... when i came home last december, there was not a single person who drives a motorcycle wearing a helmet... way klaro na lang gyud... kinahanglan unta nga kung aduna'y regulations, consistent ang pag enforce... dili kay andar andar lang... naunsa...

Thanks Ligiah for the nice and true complements. So we both have experienced in the academe anyway. In what particular level are you teaching? Tertiaty, secondary, elementary, or pre-school? My older brother is a head teacher of a public school in Bohol located in a remote Barangay of Guindulman. We shared the same interest of uplifting the level of literacy among us.

His problem then was the millenium curricula in grade school introduced by the late Raul Roco. We understood that the move of DECs with Roco at the helm was preparedness towards global competition. A noble idea! But what was disgusting then, was the apathy of the government to support the program by not providing computer units in public schools and train teachers for that purpose. My brother made a good move when he spent his month-long vacation here with me in Manila, instead of just waiting for the support to come from the government. He requested me to teach the basic computer operation and I granted his request without much ado. I even bougth him a book for that as his aid. He was able to learn the basic for one month and brought with him my personal computer set when he went back home. That's it! I could not measure the contentment he had when he told me that his school was the first one with a computer set among the public schools within the entire municipality. I just pray that in a simplest way, we did our share, and always will!

Manong A Layman... you're welcome. i taught in the tertiary level. Biological Sciences.

Manong A Layman: I am quite impressed by your views.

Anyway, I have also been connected to the academe, and also had observations of my own.

For one, teachers can be all too sympathetic to students. Papasron na lang bisag lajo ra sa tinood ang efforts, performance and behavior. Does that help the student? Sometimes, one has to be 'cruel' to help another.

Another, as Manong A Layman has stated, there are teachers who are not really qualified for the position. How can they pass on the knowledge to the students when they are struggling on the course/subject themselves?

Third, magpakasayon na lang sad ang instructor ug basa sa text nga naa sa libro. Wala na'y further explanations... Students themselves can read. Why not do something more interactive? And do further research on the topic so there's more to share? I have been a student and it irks me that teachers just read what's on the book. And i sometimes wonder whether the teacher actually knows more than what the book says...

Fourth, teachers should be willing to help students who need their help... kung daghan galisud, conduct remedial classes, give extra assignments, conduct more learning activities.

Being a teacher is no easy task. They should also be provided with good benefits.

And I definitely agree to Manong A Layman that it is a matter of devotion to work.

Danao - Bohol / Re: Danao Plans For A Canyon Swing
February 02, 2009, 07:06:12 PM
I was in Danao last December a few days after they formally opened to try this extreme adventure. I overheard one middle aged woman from another group of tourists who said:

" Kinahanglan sad unta aduna'y mo BP (sic) sa mga tawo una mosakay ani (referring to the zipline) aron makita ug angay ba mosakay. Unya duna sad mikuha inag human..." That lady, by the way, together with her group, did not try the zipline...

Sakto jud nga kinahanglan naa kay guts una ka mosakay anang zipline... unsa na lang kaha nang canyon swing! :-S

Pero ako, sakay gihapon oi... unsaon na lang ang pagmahay inag uli kay wa nakasakay...

try to  imagine a Filipino classroom scene (this is based on observations and experience):

the theories are presented in English, and the explanations can be explained in pure English or the mother tongue (tagalog, cebuano) and english.

If the teacher explains in a mixed language, this is the possibility. when it comes for the student to explain, he most probably would be required by the teacher to use English as a medium. But since the student understood it in his own mother tongue, he would find it hard to use English words in his explanation. He/ she knows the answer, but just could not get it out of his mind. He has the tendency to lose his confidence in class.

If the teacher explains everything in complicated English, the students would find it hard to grasp the theory, let alone explain it.

everything goes back to basics... simplification... and consistency in the language that is used in a classroom setting.

Let this be heeded by teachers...

#142
bitaw oi... ang problema sa atoa sad... ang basics malimtan kay sigeg huna huna pag ayo sa mga komplikadong butang... if i semento sa mga utok sa estudyante ang mga basic theories nga kinahanglan mahibaw an, i think mahan ay ra ang tanan in the course of learning...
#143

Thanks for the beautiful photos.  Sagbayan peak is much improving now. Was there 2004. Nice to know about this new Danao tourists offered activities. Dili ba mahal bayad para ta ibitay? :D

Hi Te bamb! Naa ra man ko sa kilid2x.. haha! Anyway, had a good vacation. IT was much needed sad.

sa pagkakaron, Tyrolean traversing 200 ang bayad for Danao non residents, 100 for Danao residents. Bag o pa man gud sila nag open, so mura pa ug introductory price. Cave rappeling costs like 350 or 450 i think. Adto ka dad on ana sa cave nga gikampohan ni Dagohoy sauna.

There are also a lot other activities like kayaking, water tubbing and root climbing. Nakalimot na ko sa uban. I am quite impressed with their fresh ideas and adventure tourism is really a term to describe the experience you will have in Danao.

if Filipino is our nationality... ang atong tawag sa atong kaugalingon as opposed to other Filipinos (Bisaya, Ilonggo, Tagalog) is what could be termed as regionalism. we tend to specifically stick and associate ourselves with the specific places we come from, aside from claiming our nationality as Filipinos.

The three students from Cristal e-College were my students before. Julius Tolang is in psychological trauma and he said that he was holding on to Arnold Euhengco (This is the correct spelling) ... but the waves were too big and too strong for him that he let go. I was very shocked and grieving when i received the news since i knew these boys very much and could not imagine that something like that would happen to them. They had such big dreams and ambitions and just when these dreams started to come true... it all ended...

I pray for Arnold Euhengco and Julius Bompat (who is still missing), that their souls rest in peace. And for Julius Tolang... that he may be able to recover and be  able to move on despite the tragedy.

And another correction... it's Dr. Nicerio Leanza not Ilensa.

may all the souls of these victims who perished in these sea tragedies rest in peace...

oi! timing nga mibalik ko ako sad sunod! anyway, having read the rules and read all those who have posted their weird stuff (aron sad maka huna huna ko kinsa akong prospect nga ipasunod) mao ni siya ang weird stuff about me:

1. I cannot sleep without reading a book first... bisag usa lang ka page, kontento na ko.. basta maka basa lang ug libro.
2. After a major break up, i go have a haircut... short ha! From long.. pa mub an jud nko kaayo (pwera lang karon kay wa ko'y kwarta! mahal kaayo paputol diri! )
3. I am silent whenever insulted or whatever... bantay lang kay sumbag diretso inyo madawat.
4. I am pain tolerant... I can take pain... paakon man ko or ipiton... basta i can take it to a certain level where others can't.
5. I like to stare at the sun until my eyes water (kabalo ko makadaut ni... pero ambot lang ganahan ra ko...)

Next: Kuya Lindy

hay... nahuwasan na ko sa akong gibati... as mysteriously as the pain came, the pain went away na. the xray results were normal and my doctor told me that probably it was just muscle strain of some sort. but then again... the anguish that i felt was quite unbearable. but the worst is over now and thank you so much for your prayers jud... they really helped a lot.

salamat salamat salamat jud sa TUbag Bohol Family for giving me advices... i have been trying to live healthier and more soundly... like mo kaon na ko regularly, sige inom tubig... aron ma eliminate kung unsa man galing ang mga possible reasons sa akong sakit. and now i am fine.... not fully fine yet, but i am on the right track na nga maayo....
#197
pero anyway, salamat tanan sa inyo support and prayers... i am also thinking positive about my situation and i believe i am strong to handle this situation. i should not let this make me down.

it is comforting to know that i am not alone and your advices and suggestions have enlightened me sad. thank you thank you!

well... i do not know but it might just be bleeding ulcer... :-S we do not know... i just hope i will know the results ASAP because i am really scared and I do not like this feeling at all...

Gai, you wouldn't want to think it's just a bleeding ulcer because it is not "just a bleeding ulcer".  It wasn't easy because I underwent lots of procedures like having camera dropped inside my body through my nose then through my throat then through my ubot2x.  It wasn't fun.  Sige lang, just relax lang.  You'll be okay ra lagi.

na mao sad... hay ate... i wish i could really relax... well, i do my work as if normally just to keep my mind off the pain but then it is always there bugging me and karon ra ba midagan na sad sa right side ang sakit, meaning whole area na just below the rib cage ang sakit.

tapos sakit na akong likod... siguro ang reason sad ani is sige ko ug pangusog especially kung mosakit kaayo... gipamaolan na akong back muscle ug pamugong.

Tiya, diba ang bleeding ulcers are not excruciating as bladderstones? i learned it from my patients before.

Mao ba, Maring?  That must be hard.  I don't want to know how painful it is.

Gai, you'll be fine ra lagi.  Let's just wait for the result.

Nothing very serious na na karon Tiya, but only the pain, pero ug ma kuha na, okay naman dayun na!

pero ang kasakit ba oi! sus!

mao lagi te belle... ang ako lang gyud gusto no mahibaw an nako kung unsa ang rason behind all these pains kay grabe gyud kaayo.dili ko katarong ug tulog magabii so luya jud gihapon ko inag ka buntag. i mean, at least kung makabalo na ko unsa'y sakit then my doctor will know what to do.

pain tolerant man unta ko... pero kani arang sakita na jud... di na jud ma tolerate nga i have to strain myself.
