what a shame for something like this to happen. as has been mentioned, the blame belongs to the organizers who at this point has not yet been fully and clearly identified, only implied. is it HNU? kung sila man, then they should be made to explain.

quote from raquel: "I had no problem with Window Vista."

congratulations then if that's the case. but in my experience, it's the worse. maayo pa ang windows xp... with windows vista, the computer hangs very often. also, your files have a tendency to get lost because at times when you move the mouse, some files go with it even if you don't click anything, and the files go just about everywhere, it's crazy. these never happened with windows xp.

quote from Dot (.): By the time Arthur Yap is already elected in Congress, GMA will no longer be President. So the contention that Yap will support moves to change the Constitution to keep GMA in power as prime minister does not follow. But it's another story if GMA runs for Congress and gets elected. (this is the scenario from which the contention is based. and it is not based on wild imagination: everyone is verbalizing his observation that GMA visits pampanga specifically the district where she belongs more often than not).

This is not extending her term (as head of state) but getting a fresh mandate from the district she would be running. Will she become prime minister if the constitution is changed? That remains to be seen if she can muster the required votes. (but she can certainly muster the votes if more arthur yaps make a place in congress).

quote from hofelina: "She is a very beautiful girl but take a look how she handles the fork, she could learn better dining etiquette"

there are two acceptable ways of using a fork to bring food to the mouth: tine up with the right hand (american style), or tine down with the left hand (british style). cathy holds her fork in a distinctly strange way: it's neither tine up nor tine down. perhaps this is the boholano way? seriously, pagpasensyahan na lang nato kay basin karon lang ni siya maka try ug formal dining setting. but regardless of the way she holds her fork, i am in a position to agree nga gwapa siya. i think it is her eyes that are enhanced by the shape of her eyebrows... win or lose in the game, i look forward to seeing her in the cover of FHM-Philippines.

"Gani mao ni nahimong landmark sa amo. Pasalamat na lamang ko."

don't be too fast in thinking - and thanking - that the gigantic acacia trees in your town will remain forever. trust me, with the penchant of powers that be in cutting down trees on the road side in the name of expansion and development, plus the seeming indifference of the DENR whose mandate is to protect trees from being cut, your acacias will eventually be made into lumber much sooner than you think. of course, it's going to be tragic but again, trust me, it will happen.

there's going to be a lot going for bohol specifically the third district if arthur yap is elected as house representative. he has proven to be an action man and has indeed effected a lot of programs in the D.A. where he currently holds position as secretary.

there is, however, a drawback to his good performance as cabinet member, and it is his relationship with the present administration. with GMA's positioning to make herself available in the event that the constitution is changed to parliamentary form so she can become prime minister, there is a likelihood that arthur yap will support any effort to put GMA as such.

for any thinking boholano who is concerned with the development of bohol but is also convinced that GMA should give it a rest, arthur yap's election as house representative then becomes a dilemma.

Quote from mari: "murag in my past life indian man tingali ko graz kay i love their culture a lot...hehe"

i thought i was the only filipino who had this feeling of attributing the close connnection with native americans through their art, crafts, culture and history to past life incarnations.

#118
Quote from grazie: "Navajo are also kinda poor tribe.  daghan pa man gud pod na sila."

this is understandable. the navajos live in the desert. not much to there except the usual agriculture that they have been doing for hundreds of years; growing corn, squash and beans. every now and then, there's the occasional rabbit but other than that, there's nothing much. thus, most of them countinue to remain poor.

Quote from janjan: "oh kasagaran bitaw nila ga salig lang welfare"

most native americans who have been confined to indian reservations rely on government welfare services because there are no opportunities present in the area. most of the tracts of land that have been declared by the U.S. government as indian reservation where they are supposedly autonomous and can practice self-governance are located in unproductive wasteland and are found in the middle of nowhere. so, in actuality the seeming laziness of indians can be attributed to the lack of opportunity and activity which, in hindsight, may have been deliberately done by americans (european settlers) to keep the indians disillusioned and disunited so that the indian threat can be permanently put at bay.

quote from mari: "believe lang sad gud ko nila kay bisan asa they always wear their national attire, daw wala jud alimuot nila. you can see their . naa jud character ba despite the globalization"

unlike filipinos who are unsure of their identity, indians know their history and are proud of their identity. this is the reason why we never see filipinos wearing traditional clothes or even modern versions that carry design elements of traditional clothes. but indians today still wear the salvar-kurta (baggy pants and shirt) and sari ( a single piece of long cloth that they wrap around their bodies that make up for the blouse and skirt) that their ancestors have been wearig since time immemorial.

"Buboy is in the process of selecting cast members for a Visayan historical movie that he will direct. He is also spearheading a coral reef restoration program in Bohol. Buboy just can’t stop doing things for the love of his ka-probinsiya."

this comment clearly illustrates the traits of an action man (which bohol needs), not a pencil pusher (which bohol can definitely do without).

Quote from glacier: "kusog ba diay kaayo ang bawod anang mga pumpboats?"

kung mag standby lang ang mga pumpboats ug floating resto sa tubig, way problema kay wa may bawd. pero kung magdungan ug larga silang tanan, kusog kaayo ang bawd nga mohapak sa daplin. this has been ackowledged among boat operators and some of them have even agreed to control their numbers at any one time (meaning, dili sila magdungan ug larga) in order to minimize the wave action that erodes the river bank. ang problema lang is that naay mga boat operators nga dili makahuwat sa ilang turno, makigdungan gyud, and this is where the problem lies.

i've been told that loboc mayor leon calipusan has been asked to regulate trips of boats and floating resto to a minimum at any one time but so far, wa pay action.

"We have only belatedly realized the great cultural and artistic treasure we're sitting on, and it has to take the likes of Bea Zobel to get the renaissance movement a nudge forward."

a few days ago, i came across a coffee table book published by bea zobel that focused on vernacular houses in loay and loboc areas. the book shows artistic details of boholano houses that makes good reference material for arts and culture enthusiasts including those that are particularly interested with vernacular architecture. scanning the pages of the book does make one feel proud to be part of people with a distinct identity and makes one feel mighty proud to be a boholano. the book is called "sukaran". its price of PHP 1,200 may be a bit on the high side but it's a very good book that every proud boholano should have.

in my opinion, the next thing that people should work on toward improving cultural identity is to get all local historians together and come up with a historical account of bohol starting from the srivijayan era until contemporary times, and publish it as an official documentation of the boholano people.

next in line would be a museum. bohol has lots of historical artifacts but there is hardly any place to keep these things. the only museum we had - a display of Carlos P. Garcia memorabilia that was kept in his own house - has been closed because the property has been recalled by CPG's heirs. so for now, bohol does snot have a museum. i was quite disgusted to learn that a good number of relics that include coffins and skeletal remains of ancient boholanos that were excavated from caves in anda-mabini area had to be taken to butuan by the national historical institute (NHI) for safekeeping. indeed, bohol needs a museum.

and speaking of a place to keep heritage items such a museum, we also need a sort of art gallery that will display artistic works done by boholano artists starting from pre-hispanic period up to contemporary times. bohol is rich in terms of artistic pool and there is indeed a need to showcase what has been done by local artisans; from weavers to painters to potters to painters, sculptors.

hopefully these potential projects can be initiated and facilitated by a provincial leadership under someone (in the likes of cesar montano) who sees value in advancing arts and culture development not only to recapture the pride in being a boholano but also as a tool to achieve economic development.

"Are we in the same bandwagon then, bolingitboy?"

at this time, i'm not really sure as to who i will support in the next political exercise. i'm certain though that i will definitely not vote for any of the trapos who have held political positions in the past who have signified their interest to run for bohol governor in the coming elections.

i would, however, like to see someone elected into office whose program of government can support the vision of getting bohol to become a top-rated eco-cultural tourism destination in the country and the breadbasket of the region.

so far, we have made some progress in terms of eco tourism and agriculture development but there is a need to achieve more and sustain whatever achievements have been attained thus far. there is a perceptible lack of development, however, in the culture and arts department. sure, we have the loboc children's choir but that it is not all there is in arts an culture development. bohol is rich in cultural heritage as well as talents and skills and i believe a cultural renaissance movement would be a plus factor in trying to achieve this goal. most importantly, we need a venue to store cultural artifacts and display visual artistic works that will showcase the boholano heritage and his distinct identity.

looking at the list of gubernatoriables and considering the vision that needs to be fulfilled, it seems that there is only one name that fits the bill: the name of cesar montano.

i hope this place doesn't close too soon. someone describe the place when a streamer was installed to announce that they are open for business: "gilangaw" kuno (in an idiomatic sort of way)... it turned out that there were hardly any people during the first couple weeks of business operations. the only people that could be seen kuno were the waitresses who were all standing outside the resto waiting for customers in full gear and menu in hand amid loud pop music blaring from their sound system.

"I´m thinking if ramadan starts, how will the muslim population behave, sila man kini ang mahilig manluwa, kay po-asa man."

hahaha, i have the same thoughts... during ramadan, muslims are required to undergo fasting from sun up to sundown. they are not allowed to swallow anything, be it food, water, or even their own saliva. that is the reason why they have to spit their saliva if there is any accumulation in the mouth at any moment in the course of their fasting.

i wonder how the muslim members of the davao city council reacted when the measure was presented by the proponent and deliberated upon by the body.

” the country’s longest 450-meter zip-line or suislide,"

Dapat gyud nga undangon na ug angkon sa Danao ug claim that they have the longest zipline in the country at 450 meters long kay mauwawan ta labinag mabasahan ni sa mga taga Davao.

For the information of all, there is a facility in Davao City which operates a zipline that is 720 meters long. This place called "Outland Adventure" is run by a non-stock, non-profit foundation, and was financed by the late Al Aboitiz of Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC). This facility sits on a 17-hectare lot owned by the Gaisanos and is located right across the left-side boundary of the Gap Farm along the diversion road in Maa, Davao City.

I heard that Ian Gonzaga, Danao mayor's brother, used to work with DLPC a few years back so he may be familiar with Outland Adventure's location.

A feature in the Outland Adventure zipline which makes it a better zipline aside from its being longer is the fact that they have twin cables in an over-and-under configuration. This makes it a lot more safe because riders wear double harnesses with each one connected to each cable. In any unlikely event that one cable fails, the other functions as a back-up and the rider remains suspended.

In the event of a cable failure in Danao where there is only one single cable running between the two anchor points, the rider simply drops like a stone from the sky.

the river cruise activities in loboc river will be ending in the near future. so, try to enjoy it while the facilities are still there. once the continuing erosion of the riverbanks start to eat into the pillars of houses along the river, i'm sure homeowners will begin protesting with the LGU to stop river cruise operations. this is because the erosion of the riverbank is caused by the waves that are brought about by the uncontrolled number of boats that crisscross the narrow river all at the same time. unless the number of boats and floating restos are controlled to a certain limit at any one time, the river cruises will be stopped by homeowners along the river to prevent their houses from being eventually toppled over into the river.

Macks: Nice kaayo and information nga imo gi share that shows a macroscopic perspective of the migratory path that early man took. i have read bits and pieces of history in various parts of the world and the info you shared provided the connection between the continents and among the various peoples that walk the earth as we know today. it is pretty interesting to learn the origins of the srivijayans (of which boholanos are supposed to have originated from) and the path they took across the pacific that eventually ended in easter islands. speaking of easter islands, i own a copy of an old book about the place which was written by thor heyerdahl, a norwegian adventurer who explored the island around the 50s. it is a documentary account that stirs the interest and enthusiasm of any history, culture and anthropology enthusiast.

Quote from grazie: "This year I wasn't able to attend the powwow event here which is usually held at the premises of Stanford University but previous years I was able to attend.  I am so drawn by their culture and I felt like I belong to a family here of Native American Indians - The Navajo.  When I went to New Mexico, I was able to immerse myself, though for just less than a week days, to the culture of the Navajo.  They are very, very deep people.  I think all Native Americans are.  Peace loving and very hardworking people.  And very proud of their heritage."

just a couple trivias about the navajo that i'd like to share: (1) the navajos, being one of the pueblo indian tribes that live in the deserts of the american southwest are dependent on agriculture for subsistence whose sacred crops include corn, beans and squash. as an agriculture-dependent community that is located in an arid region, most of their religious ceremonies revolve around asking the gods for rain and good harvest. as such, they are the peoples that mostly perform the "rain dance"; (2) one of the more popular american indian chiefs - Geronimo - was a navajo; (3) as asians, from whom the native american indian descended, we are their relatives.

Quote from grazie: "hala naa pa nako ang 500 nations ha!"

can you tell me more about this 500 nations video and how i can access it?

i am an interested student of tribal culture and arts and learning more about native americans will certainly add to the information that i have of american tribes which i have gained from the films that i have watched and the books that i have read. i found the book "bury my heart at wounded knee" to be a very interesting read.

mdb: thanks for the post and pics... i have always been interested with tribal culture and arts, and it includes native american peoples. i'll be keeping these pics in my collection of native american stuff. if there's anybody here who would like to donate something to this small "collection", i could use some silver and torquoise jewelry, moccasins, war shield, bow and arrow and quiver, jaw-bone war club, glass beads. oh, the list goes on :-)

as a rejoinder to an earlier statement that native americans originally came from asia which explains the similar features between indians and asians is an observation that i would like to make: the first photo in this thread of an elderly indian woman bears a striking resemblance with filipino actress chichay.

"Luoy baya ni sila ug basahon nimo ilang history.Gipasagdan ra ni sila sa Goberno diri sa una.Naay trail namo diri nga gitawag ug Trail of tears.

this are all true. it shows how european immigrants grabbed the indian's land. it is horrible to read about accounts on how americans fooled the indians into submission through treaties that they did not honor and conducted a pogrom (systematic decimation of a people) among the ranks of the various indian tribes by committing and starving them in military garrisons and speading disease among them so that they will die faster.

Nasaag man to si Christopher Columbus unya pag abot niya sa America, abi niya ug sa India."

Ang ilang nawong murag mga Filipino, Nepal ug Chinese. Ang ilang genetics close kaayo sa mga Asians."

i was just reading an art magazine yesterday that focused on native american art and an article mentioned the same thing: that native americans originated froma asia when alaska and russia were connected by land bridges thousands of years ago. these asians did not only settle in north america (present day canada and USA) but also spread across mexico, central and south america. this probably explains why indians (natives in USA/Canada, mexico, and south america) and asians (including filipinos) have similar physical features.

i actually have the same hopes... the regional hub which is cebu does not have the capacity to grown its food requirement as well as basic resources such as potable water. this present condition should give bohol leaders the impetus to follow a development path that will see bohol as the bread basket of central visayas. indeed, there is still room to plant more crops, my own backyard included :-)

there is nothing wrong whatsoever with the growing number of filipinos (boholanos included) who go out of their way and expend financial resources and time to get their 15 minutes of fame. anyone trying to achieve it by doing something that is out of the ordinary should be given his chance especially if he owns the resources that he expends, and i believe inabanga deserves credit for their efforts.

what is observable, however, is the fact that people tend to give too much credit for accomplishing something that is very familiar to them and thus are very easily achievable feats.

if italians are credited in the guiness book of world records for baking the largest pizza in the world, it comes as no surprise because pizza is a traditional italian concoction and it's only logical that they excel in it. if pangasinenses are credited by the guiness book of world records for organizing the longest row of sinugbang bangus, it should come as no surprise because everyone knows that pangasinan is the bangus capital in the country. in marikina, people no longer see any big deal about the town being credited for constructing the biggest shoe in the world. this is because marikina is a shoe capital. similarly, if inabangnons are able to make the longest raffia roll in the world, it would not be surprising at all given that inabanga is probably the only place in this tropical patch of earth that uses the particular part of the buri plant to make a weaving material called raffia.

koddi, inabanga probably never really broke any prior record for weaving the longest saguran except probably their own previous record, if there was any at all.

Auote from benelynne: "Bai Zec,

With the governor committing 10,000 hectares of Bohol to Jatropha production, and this new push on seaweed production, will Bohol be the biodiesel capital of the Philippines?

I am fully convinced that seaweed production is less deleterious to Bohol's food self-sufficiency, as this does not require upland cultivation. But is this viable for small-scale production? Is this less capital intensive than jatropha? I certainly hope this could be an alternative livelihood for the marginalized fisherfolk who do not have land and access to capital."

while seaweed production does not not have land requirements that may compete with space for the production of agricultural produce, it does require offshore space which may otherwise be more practical if used for mariculture initiatives such as oyster culture, cucumber ranching or even fish production in cages. at least commercial production of these edible marine products can lessen the pressure the marine environment and its inhabitants are already subjected to.

whether we are willing to admit it or not, seaweed production that requires vast coastal areas to produce in bulk supports the use of fossil fuels. in all appearances, biofuels only serve to perpetuate our dependence on fossil fuels.

Long before the Spaniards came to Philippines shores, the Philippine archipelago consisting of 7,169 islands with an area of 1,049,212,962 nautical square miles, including Guam and Hawaii was known as Maharlika. It was populated by Malays and ruled by the Tagean Tallano clans from the ninth to the fifteenth century. When the Spaniards started ruling the Philippines archipelago, they renamed it Hacienda Filipina.Of the many kingdoms in Asia, Maharlika was one of them under King Luisong Tagean Tallano, the father of Raja Lapu-Lapu and Raja Soliman, the successors of King Marikudo of the Sri Vishayan Empire. Its principal products at that time were peanuts (mani) exported to Mexico and European countries and Herbal plants known as "Nilad" with some medicinal qualities which were exported to Mainland China. With the passage of time, the Chinese traders changed the name Maharlika to Maynilad or Maynila."

because philippine history books do not categorically state it, i have always wondered whether or not Lapu-Lapu was a muslim. for one thing, i have noticed the consistency in the description of his weapon as a kampilan which is one of the weapons of choice of maguindanaos and maranaws. seeing lapu-lapu's kin on the list indicate typical muslim names and hence seems to suggest that lapu-lapu was indeed a muslim.

fines imposed on infractions against fishery laws are too lenient, too small, that encourage fishermen to continue engaging in illegal fishing activities. after all, the fines are very affordable.

if government is really serious about conserving marine resources, then it should put more teeth to its laws. also, government should prosecute cases of fishery law violations until either an acquittal or conviction is made. unlike what is happening now when everything seems completed once a case has been filed in court, but not really prosecuted.

quote from fdaray: Again , I would say, "can trees substitute  for crops ? Moabot ang panahon, kahoy na ang daghan ug wala nay crops.

a balance between planting trees and agricultural crops will have to be struck to ensure that people continue to have basic food source - unless people are ready and willing to munch on tree leaves when they get hungry.

the best way to maintain said balance would be to plant trees in watersheds and areas that have steep inclines that are prone to erosion and therefore not conducive to farming, and establish farms where the terrain is flatter and more suitable to agricultural production.

in plain and simple terms: mananon tag kahoy sa bukid ug bakilid, mag farm ta sa patag.

LGU Philippines / Re: Amend Pangilinan Law
July 04, 2009, 05:44:06 PM
i have always been of the opinion that the juvenile law introduced by kiko pangilinan is one sided, out of context if taken in the philippine perspective, and outdated. however, this reported development of pangilinan himself who might be introducing amendments to the very law he sponsored smacks of something that smells fishy. could it be that he is beginning to become aware that his juvenile law is an unpopular one and now we wants to rectify himself to gather votes for the elective position that he will be running for in the 2010 elections? just asking.

it might interest you to know, people, that when the post office vacated its last rented location prior to its transfer to its own building at the old city hall compound near the cathedral, thousands of undelivered letters were discovered hidden in the ceiling of that building. obviously, this is where the thieves at the post office discarded the letters that they had tampered with... i'm just wondering if there aren't any tampered letters stashed and/or discarded in the ceiling of the building they occupy now.

"I am looking for any news regarding one foreign national who has reportedly died here In Bohol according to over seas newspapers.

The person (foreigner) was in an extreme adventure in some part of Bohol rumored to have a heart attack in the middle of his sporting event and passed away?

This news did not reach local media and anyone knowing anything about this please blog any information here.

It may be he was involved in a filming of some fear show here?

Would like to see if anyone can confirm such a rumor or not?"

a week or so ago, there was this news item carried by ABS-CBN (national edition) about a 50+ year old participant of the french edition of the TV show "survivor" who died of what they believed was a heart attack while in the middle of a game. the show is currently being filmed in the caramoan islands in camarines sur... perhaps this is the incident that is being referred to?

"If ever he wins, will the international organizations(UN for one) and/or other members of the international community (Australia, E.U., the US, Japan, South Korea, China,...etc) that have helped shaped Bohol's current positive development be so willing to continue to extend their help or will they become cautious and the province has to start from scratch again. We can only hope."

it might be good for people to know that foreign-funded projects being implemented in bohol are not a result of the lobbying performance of our leaders in government. regardless of who is in power, these foreign governments will continue to "support" the various development projects that they have been doing for the last several decades.  and while we are at it, it might be good for people to know that these foreign governments are not really doing this out of mercy or anaything kind of crap that they try to make us believe: these foreign governments are implementing these so called development projects because they are advancing their own hidden agenda.

so, whoever is bohol governor is immaterial, insofar as the continuation of the implementation of foreign-funded projects is concerned.

by the way, this comment is not in support of cesar montano's candidacy. you guys can vote for any candidate you take a liking to. of course, i would be particularly pleased and impressed if you guys would make an exception in the case of chatto and cajes.

"Personally, I don't think it was ever green when Jose Rizal lived there.  He probably neglected the time when the house changed owners and at one point was used as a "bodega" when it was probably painted green."

the greenish color which the NHI people discovered upon scraping the wood and mistaking it for the original paint color was probably a kind of fungal growth that takes place when something is neglected for quite sometime. ever notice the greenish color that covers something when it is not cleaned for a considerable period of time? this happens with both wood and metal surfaces... hmmm.. reminds me of the greenish hue that the statue of liberty takes on after several years from the last cleaning.

their signing of HB 1109 (which is apparently a move to change the constitution in order to accomodate GMA as prime minister and perpetuate herself in power) is a clear indication that these 2 boholano lawmakers primarily represent the interests of senior politicians first and not their constituents that they were elected to serve. we need leaders who will put the interest of the people who elected them first and foremost. by this definition, i don't think these 2 would qualify.
#171
anybody is acceptable except chatto and/or cajes for bohol governor.
#172
"There are those in the opposition who wants to change the Constitution, such as Sen. Pimentel and many others who are critical to the PGMA administration"

from what i remember, pimentel is partial to a shift from presidential to federal form of government... the present initiative of congress to change the constitution is obviously choreographed by malacanang in such a way that there will be a shift from presidential to parliamentary form. in fact, many people believe that this is the real objective of the attempt to change the charter to provide an option for GMA's continuing political ambition. all other reasons cited for the charter change initiative are mere justifications for this action to cloak their real intentions. if anyone can remember, the issue of charter change only came about after GMA's reelection. obviously, she is looking too far ahead than most people have been.
#173
"Bilib ko ni Gloria. She can't go through the front door, so she's sneaking through the back door of Cha-cha. Ambot lang ninjo, pero para nako pwede kaayo siya nganlan nga political ninja, as adopted Bol-anon, courtesy of Chatto and Cajes. She is either obsessed with the premiership, or scared out of her wits to spend her retirement in court battles. So she doesn't mind if she goes down from the Palace to the House, because through the House, she can sneak back to the Palace."

the best way to counter the "back-door entry" of GMA to get back to power is to JUNK all administration candidates in the 2010 elections. this way, there won't be any people to support the move to change the constitution.

Talk of the Town / Re: Bohol Against Charter Change
June 17, 2009, 08:47:38 PM
the most concrete way to show indignation for the passage of HB 1109 and to get the message across to malacanang and their cohorts in congress that boholanos are against con ass is simply to JUNK all administration candidates in the 2010 elections.

#176
because of the issue of charter change and the possibility of extending GMA's politcal power as prime minister under a parliamentary system, we boholanos should junk ALL administration candidates in the coming elections in 2010. this way, the issue of charter charge will lose supporters in congress and hopefully will die a natural death.

so, whoever runs for governor and congressmen under the administration ticket should be junked.
#177
Chatto-Cajes Tandem? It figures. They both signed in favor of Con Ass. I am almost certain they will both have the blessings of Malacanang as official administration candidates if they indeed would run for public office in Bohol. But whatever the justification they gave for their vote on the charter change issue, the fact remains the same that supporting House Bill 1109 is designed to put GMA in power as Prime Minister under a parliamentary form of government.

Padaganon lang nato ni silang duha. Then, ilaglag nato sa piniliay. This suggestion is intended for those who are against charter change and its negative implications on the life of Juan dela Cruz.

Kadtong okay lang kung tulison sila sa atubang, you can elect anyone running under the administration ticket.
#178
regardless of who malacanang endorses as official administration candidate for bohol officials from governors to congressmen, we boholanos should make sure that ALL administration candidates lose in the coming elections in 2010. this is to ensure that any initiative towards charter change to further the political ambitions of GMA and her cohorts is derailed. DOWN with all administration candidates!
#179
JUNK all administration candidates in the coming elections in 2010, and the charter change issue will disappear into thin air.
#180
‘Never again to another dictatorship!’

if GMA files for candicacy for a position in the house of representatives in the elections next year, it is obvious what this will be leading to... the ONLY way and the SUREST way to ensure that another dictatorship under GMA is railroaded before it can even start is NOT to vote for any candidate under the administration ticket. if all administration candidates lose in the coming elections, the charter change issue will likely become moot and academic. even if GMA pulls off a miracle in her district, she will be nothing but a lonely minority voice in the lower house.

"All royal datus who had dealings with Spanish commanders were clothed only in tattoos and G-Strings---Kolambu of Limasawa, Awi of Butuan, KATUNA of BOHOL, and Tupas of Cebu."

I was somewhat surprised to see Datu Sikatuna as one of the great Datu's to adorn these tattoos. This is great evidence that the tattoo traditions did reach Bohol."

from the readings i had so far on pre-spanish filipinos particularly visayans and the use of tattoos based on limited materials and literatures, i have always suspected that the natives the spaniards found in places that they visited such as leyte, bohol and cebu sported these tattoos. the info you got from the book you mentioned only confirms my suspicions. i hope to find a more detailed illustration of these tattoos and what they patterns symbolize.

Calling this heavily silted river as the cleanest river in the world may be too presumptuous because the statement did not come from an authorized and credible person or agency."

i did not read the whole thread but i have the same concern: KINSA man ang nagsulti nga cleanest river kuno and loboc river in the world? repeat, in the world ha?  dili in the philippines, in the world gyud.

basin ug himo2 na pud ni sa mga overzealous boholanos nga hangol kaayo sa mga titles bisan dili tinuod: the first this..., the first that..., found only in bohol..., the biggest this..., the biggest that..., the longest this..., the longest that... you find it in places like baclayon church, tarsier sanctuary, loboc river, danao, etc. but the truth of the matter is that these claims are highly questionable at best. at worst, maka uuwaw kaayo.

dapat lang nga dili tugotan ang oil exploration activities within municipal waters in bohol. to begin with, the philippines if ever oil will be found within our waters, will not experience a dramatic decrease of domestic oil prices. this is because the foreign oil companies that will do oil extraction will be selling whatever is taken from philippine territory at world market prices even when selling it to the philippines. this is how the foreign oil company and the philippines have agreed upon regarding oil in palawan. so, wa lang gihapoy hinungdan if they find oil in bohol or any other philippine area for that matter. the destruction of such activities to marine life is certainly not worth it.

this comment has a point: if the LGU had done proper monitoring, these illegal structures should never have seen completion because it is their job to stop constructions that are illegal. however, i'm certain that the resort owners know the boundaries of their properties and i'm equally certain that they were aware that they were encroaching on public land. if they are truly law-abiding citizens, then they don't need to be monitored and instead do voluntary compliance. i believe what happened is a classic case of the filipino attitude of finding a way to go around the law (palusot) and see if they can get away with it. well, malas lang siguro sila this time. they should be game enough to comply now they it seems that they can't get away with it.

"There was a very extensive debate why Leyte used the term Pintados, which is not exclusive to the province. The festival's name has evolved, though. Gibutangan na og complete name, Leyte Pintados Kasadyan, unless ginganlan sa sab og lain."

this is quite interesting, the use of the term pintados in leyte. in school, i have always been taught in my history class that the term pintados was used by a spanish chronicler who first made a description of the natives that he had seen in the island of panay who were heavily tattooed. in other words, the term pintados has always been known to be associated with panay, although panay is not necessarily the entire visayas but only a part of it. if i'm not mistaken it was the expedition of miguel lopez de legazpi who first landed in panay island on their way to manila to establish a fort there. this was around 1568-1569, a year or so after they established a garrison in the shoreline of cebu city which is now called fort san pedro.

"Who cares? People will still vote for them on the next elections anyway.

I want this Constitution changed. It's so full of defective and flawed provisions. It's no longer attuned to the times and globalization. I want a parliamentary and federal form of government."

without meaning to cast insult to those who will continue to support house bill 1109 signatories, it is obviously an exercise of freedom of choice that is devoid of any rational thinking.

it is true that our constitution is not perfect but should the whole thing be changed simply because some parts are no longer relevant?

1. can we not simply amend the parts that need to be changed?

2. do we have to allow a constituent assembly which is composed of the same members of the house of congress which shamelessly alloted money for themselves for so-called development projects in their areas which they euphemistically call contryside development fund which they take from public coffers? if our constitution must be changed/amended, it should be done through a constitutional convention which will be represented by members that are elected by the people for the sole purpose of changing/amending the constitution. this will at least minimize if not totally eliminate the incorporation of provisions that only serve the selfish interest of politicians. to change the constitution through a constituent assembly is very much like giving count dracula the keys to the blood bank.

3. many politicians are talking about the shift of the form of government from presidential to parliamentary system. it doesn't require one to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the only reason for the pursuit of this direction is simply to lay the groundwork in which the incumbent president may become prime minister, which in a parliamentary form of government, is the actual hands-on leader and delegates the president as a titular head of state (tao-tao, kiko-kiko).

if we must change our form of government because it is no longer effective and relevant, why don't we try to shift towards federalism? after our initial exposure to the local government code that put more power and autonomy to LGUs to run their own affairs and taking off some power from imperial manila, the most logical direction to go is towards federalism because it gives us the opportunity to exercise more autonomy in the LGU and we don't have to follow the dictates of imperial manila. for a long time, countryside development has been dictated by bureaucrats and technocrats who have never left their airconditioned offices in manila and thus do not know what juan dela cruz in the barrio really needs. it's time we are given the opportunity to chart our own affairs, manage our own resources, manage our own funds. this can be achieved under a federal system of government. so if we must change our form of government, it should be towards federalism, not parliamentary system. better still, let's leave it alone and amend only what's necessary.

"Cajes was the chair of the House ethics committee that investigated the alleged hidden wealth of the Arroyos in Germany and cleared them."

to begin with, that investigation was a farce. cajes sought if there were properties in germany in the name of mike arroyo. with our experience of erap amassing ill-gotten wealth under the name of jose velarde, the direction with which the cajes investigation proceeded is obviously a sign of a farcical play.

"Edgar Chatto has a sterling legislative record and is largely credited for catapulting Bohol in the tourism map."

while edgar chatto may have authored a good number of house bills, i would beg to disagree that chatto is responsible for the brisk business the tourism sector in bohol has been experiencing. this fact is largely due to the inclusion of bohol as one of the 8 anchor tourism destinations in the country as identified, promoted and actively supported by the Department of Tourism (DOT). chatto does not even have anything to do with the inclusion of bohol in the list of 8 anchor destinations. chatto's contribution to tourism was his recently-approved tourism bill. long before the approval of this bill, thousands of tourists had visited bohol and that number can hardly be credited to chatto... as evidenced by his support for house bill 1109, he is nothing more than an instrument in the perpetuation of corruption in this country. if ever edgar chatto should run for any public office in the next elections, he should be junked on the basis of his shameful support for 1109. so should all administration candidates, especially if arroyo runs for a house position in the coming elections; we all know what this will be leading to.

Just asking... Sandugo Festival itself wasn't always celebrated until the mid 90's."

this comment may have a point here... the sandugo festival in bohol is a product of a marketing scheme devised by the DOT back in the late 80s to create a festival every month in different provinces of the philippines. there is no historical significance whatsoever in holding the sandugo festival in july; it was simply the month that was assigned by the DOT for bohol to hold it.

"As an annual visitor to Bohol, and especially Alona Beach I was surprised on my last visit to see how property owners had set up barriers to pedestrians trying to walk along the beach and was wondering if any action has been taken to clear the obstructions as indicated by this article."

these barriers on the beach should be dismantled. beach resort owners are treating an area that is supposed to be communal as if they own it, which they don't. resort owners should be disciplined and government leaders should do it. that is what they have been elected to do: implement the law. if they can't, they should be discarded come election time.
