Talk of the Town / Re: Racism Against Filipinos

Cathay has good pay packages, good health insurance and good travel bennies for the really senior guys or if you move to HK. Now, compared to other airlines, say the former Continental Airlines, they had good travel bennies even for the 5-7 year employees. Pay is less than half of Cathay's and job stability is not too good. CX has continued to be one of the world's best. You can reap bigger rewards only if you give them your first born son...err...I mean, live the life they dictate. 8) For some of us who don't want to live in HK and want to stay where we've settled, the bennies is not as good (travel etc)  but at least the job stability is better than most US airlines.

Just thought of something, there are so many Pinoy sailors out there, I wonder if any of them know of a cheap way to send say a container back to the US. I know there are Pinoys who send container full of stuff from US to PI, there must be a way to do it in reverse, without breaking the bank. I hope. (really good wood furniture from the artisans in Loboc and Antequera I'd want to bring back )

it was in 2004, I tried to ship a box of presents for my in-laws in FL via the post office. They wanted me to unwrap everything to make sure there was no "contraband" then I had to re-wrap it and reseal the box and then send it.  The post office near the old city hall.

in the more recent years 2009-2011, Mama pays anywhere around Php 2000 to Php 3000 when she sends me care packages of soaps, tabliya and amoxicillin and the occasional well-wrapped dried fish  and ginamos 8) a little 8x8x8 box.

Although... if you have a friend in the Navy, they might be able to help get your loot home. Either that or someone who works for an oil company. I know they move them all over the world so they should have a good deal when it comes to freight. I could be wrong. Hubby works for Cathay Pacific and we don't get squat...not even a poke in the eye. :-(

it won't happen, because kris aquino has a retinue, including close-in security, and i doubt if she'd go to the condo of a man she hardly knew and cry rape a few hours later.

I still wonder about that. Ngano man mi sulong man si Madame ? murag nangita siguro engkwentro... Lorenzo what I am saying about the box being sent from states is easy to send but from Philippines to America is impossible....

Been wanting to do that but it'll cost an arm and a leg. A jumbo 24x18x18 from Houston to Bohol is $115. A small, itty bitty box from Bohol to Florida cost me almost $50. Law of supply and demand I guess :-( wish there was a reasonable forwarder though...

I am living here for almost 11 years....no matter how nice how caring or how many nice friends I have here....Foreigners are also treated here discriminatory....at times....We are sometimes thinking wow this is a sensitive culture...okay for them to do certain behaviorism but lord forbid if a foreigner does the same sometimes offensive actions of the Filipino (double standard), look at places to buy things at with no menu and no price tags....We often talk among ourselves in groups at the malls comparing news and experiences and touching basis with one another some of the male foreigners tell me that some Filipino think this is the only country that exists in the world...It is all about being a Pinoy....

This could be true here in the US too. Although you get varying degrees of uber tolerance to people saying something. It depends on where you are. In the less educated and travelled populations of the US, the people are rude too...rude enough to ask you to your face if you're a mail-order bride...or ask if we have plates, forks and spoons in the Philippines ! I've been to places where big, fat, unkempt ugly American ladies stared at me up and down, sniffed and refused to look at me while she waited on our table, once at a Cracker Barrel in Georgia and another at a barbeque place in South Carolina !  ::)  On the other hand, when you are in educated company, the experience is total different. The conversations are meaningful, and there is mutual respect where nobody thinks that they are above anybody.

While there are Pinoys who think that Philippines is the end-all, be all, there's a good number of Americans who think that way as well. You only have to turn the TV on to see Americans making idiots of themselves and recording it too.  Same goes for pinoys...Anybody remember that air headed "actress" who actually tried to put on her lifejacket on a plane as she followed the flight attendant step by step ?  8) ;D

Don't forget, ex pats are not only "suffering" for being expats themselves but unfortunately get lumped in with all the pervs and pedophiles that find their way into the Philippines.(which is lots)  Its unfair, I know, unfortunately, people would sooner believe the bad stuff rather than the good stuff. Both in the US and in the PI. You hardly hear of the good-natured ex pat sending needy kids to school but oh, the whole community will hear about this perv who is banging his wife's 3 teenage sisters who got them all preggers in a New York minute !!! LOL !  Same thing goes here with Filipinas who marry Americans. Even without having seen us or met us, we're already labelled gold diggers, hookers and visa hunters. Even though sometimes, the Pinay's life was easier here in the Philippines rather than the life her American husband can offer her in the US. I know a few who are honestly richer and more educated than their American husbands. Not the norm but there is a good number where the Pinay wife makes more money than the American hubby even if you added hubby's ex wife's income to his, they are still short a few thousand of what Pinay wife makes.  8) Guess we could blame the G.I.s for bringing back hookers and the scammers who really do this stuff. Even if they're probably just 1 for every 100 girls.  :-[

Quote from: JellyBean on May 17, 2012, 05:58:55 AMI ask them then why do they stay here and why do they take GF Filipino.......the answers vary....Look at adoption fees in the country foreigners pay more to file a case versus Filipino?   And go through the same amount of hearings....in a speedier amount of time.....but the foreigner has 10 times more requirements to obtain in comparison to Filipino in the court systems here...some people here will even cut in front of foreigners who are already at the counter next to be served and if you call the one cutting in line in front of you you get looked at like oh well....Last night three students from USA standing in line at the counter they were being cut in front of and they had no qualms telling the ones in front to have some manners...

1.) PALAKAS <-- its the case of who they know and probably a case of beer to grease the wheels. The people in the system know they can squeeze more out of foreigners and there is something to squeeze. They know that no matter how hard they squeeze some fellow pinoys, they can't get anything.  As for requirements, I think whoever is a foreigner in a country will have more requirements.  Just think, as a green card holder in the US, you are limited legally compared to a US citizen.

2.) Cutting in line <--- Priscilla dear, I suffer this almost every day in good old Houston with  a good wallop of it this morning. With the exception of people staring, here,if they're not involved, they don't give a crap while the aggravated parties give each other the bird and yell at each other. They come in all races and shapes too. White people, Black people, Asians, Euros etc.  Not as bad in the more affluent areas of town but darn, even a Home Depot or a Best Buy in the poorer part of town have super crappy service, rude ignorant associates and to top it off, they make you see and feel how they don't give a rat's ass about customer service. Really go out of their way, I think.  DOn't know which is worse, but still frustrating all thesame.

Ermmmm....remember, a good number of Filipinos are poor. Yes, its frustrating, but if you can't beat it, join in and be good at the game ! :D ;) I remember being in Hong Kong where they seem ruder than anywhere I've been in my life. They shove you out of the way, scurry and when they hit you, they don't even apologize, just look away. Guess if they don't see you, you don't see them.  You can't speak Greek to an Inuit, so when I had the chance to shove back, I did so with gusto. Fair Play Senior ? hahaha ! ;D

Quote from: JellyBean on May 17, 2012, 05:58:55 AMLook at Filipino abroad they have communities of they're own race....one time I tried to have an expat group here.....but the people were so appalled about the ideal as if it were ganging up on the Filipino...do we as Americans say that about Filipino's having their communities....I think not....Racism is not just about being victimized as one nationality....racism comes in all forms and all nationalities...

Wow, this I never knew. When I was still living there, there were always Euro communities in Bohol. They stick together, specially the Germans and Swedes. Complete with their flags on their front porch.  Although, I wonder who were appalled, the other ex pats ? or the Filipino community ?

For Ex Pats who just want to enjoy retirement, I don't see why there's a problem with having an Ex Pat American community in Bohol, Lord knows there's quite a few. Most of them decent family men who could be a force for good if they work together.

Now, if the men in question are in the Philippines for some unwholesome reason aka sex tours, bad behavior and perverts,  ;D OF COURSE, they would NOT want to be in a community with decent people. They know that while most Pinoys won't call them out, you guys might and will. THey also know that if a Pinoy without any money were to file a case against them, its not gonna stick unless its really blatant, but they know most fellow Ex Pats have the money, education and resources to hold their butts accountable for their actions so they stay away.  ;)

He said to me (in his very soft and grandfatherly voice), "Ondoy BranBran, ajaw gajod pagastogasto daghan kai dali ra ma wa ang kuwarta. If you got no money, den you got no honey. No money, no honey!" bwahahahaha!

Perting katawa gajud mi duha.  ;D

Unsa pa ! When I was in college, they say "Bahalag Saging Basta Loving". TOINKS ! Maybe I was a little ambitious. I don't consider money to be everything but it is a great tool to have in life. Alangan man ug pabug-at ra ka to those people around you. Soon, even those who love you dearly would buckle under that burden. Mas maayo pud nang you can stand on your own, and if you have more to spare, then you have a choice to share. If you don't have anything, you can't share anything.  Although it has to have a balance too. Anything in excess is dangerous.

Anyway, this brought up a short anecdote Mama told me. During my Papa's heyday, he loved to "treat" people. Even total strangers. Hi personal favorites were those old merchants who sell things door to door. No not the expensive stuff. Fishwoman with her bucket of fish, the taho guy, the balut guy, down to this older woman who was selling this wood carved storage things.  Papa would buy them out and give their stuff to his friends or to our relatives. He bought out  a taho guy once and I swear I wasn't gonna eat Taho for a year ! then there's the balut guy. He bought everything and called the istambays and gave them free balut.

Mama told him that he was very "pasikat" and "hambugero" and to stop spending money. He said "Dili man nako magasto-an or mabangkahan ang Ginoo, sa iyaha nalang mga anak ko mo-bangka".  So for Papa, that was his way of thanking God and making his fellow man happy. Buying in excess of what he needs and sharing it to the family , friends and neighbors.   To the merchant, he was a blessing , to the istambays, a free snack and sometimes, when he buys out the entire bucket of fish (ginamos, bolinaw etc), our family and few neighbors get a nice dinner. :-)

Just food for thought..

In 2007, my cousins who live in TOm's River, NJ visited us here in Houston.

Apparently, where they are, BSN RNs start at 28/hr night shift. In Houston, around $25/hr that's a $3 difference.

According to them, my 2 story, 2,000 sqft 3br2.5ba brick home is around $400k in NJ. The Woodlands is one of the more upscale areas in Houston and we got it for $150k.

heheh ! We never had a housing bubble and Texas has the Texas Medical Center. Oh, easy to visit Pinas too...From Houston-Bush to Narita to Manila. or go thru Houston-Hobby to LA then MNL. Houston is one of the few cities that is still hiring. there's lay-offs but lots of hiring too. Companies like Shell, Chevron, TOtal, Schlumberger are still recruiting heavily at U of H.

Food craving...I'm not even gonna start. its a yum party with more than 5 filipino buffets. :-) it might be a good financial move.

downside, winter is far too short. My furry boots gets used twice a year TOPS :-(

Yessir, I'm in The Woodlands, north of Houston. I have friends who live in Katy and it takes me about an hour to get there. What part of Katy ? we frequent a Pinoy Kusina there. There's also a Catholic Church there with a healthy pinoy population.

My closest friend and me last Christmas. We grew up 2 houses apart in Penaflor St, Tagbilaran and we were classmates in BWS from Nursery to Grade 6, then 4 years in TCSHS...she went to UB, I went to HNU. She's a nurse now and we're both in Texas. She's in Austin, I'm in Houston but we see each other all the time and talk almost every day. 26 years of friendship...from when she was a cute little boy in Penaflor to now that cute boys are fighting over her.  8)

Lorenzo, what you say is right. It is definitely what my Mama and Papa had planned and done. When my Papa lost his job due to his illness, they went from living very comfortably to living on only 1/8th of the former income. If my parents were in perfect health, they wouldn't be in trouble, but seeing as health insurance is almost non-existent in the PI. (yeah, I know, there's some sorry form of it), they struggle from time to time. Good thing I'm blessed to have a good job so I can help out.

Mama is very cautious. From when I was little, they saved and invested in lots. Its not very liquid, I know, but it sure helped out in a pinch as collateral to the bank. She also invested in Marcela Bonds from Plaza Marcela which used to earn 10% per year and gave her a 6% commission discount. Through the years, there was Forever Living, PhilKraft, DXN...name it, my Mama tried it and didn't work out too well. Always fell back to Marcela Bonds and her regular government job. Papa on the other hand, made lots of money as a sea man captain. He spent a lot too, if not for Mama's constant nag to save. Which he did. grudgingly.

The point to this story is that, with risk comes reward. Its just a matter of what kind of risk are we comfortable with.

When I was 18, Papa gave me $100 for my Christmas present. At that time, the exchange rate was P55 to $1. I promptly took all the money and invested it in Plaza Marcela. Unfortunately, from 10% interest a year, it fell to 6%. Sucks but when you consider most banks only pay 2% at most 4% for savings, I was still ahead. I then used the credit line that came with the bond and the 6% interest to get the things I wanted with 3 months to pay it back while earning interest.

In thesame year, my math teacher from HNU (shameless forgot her name), lent me a copy of Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad. It gave me a whole new perspective on investment, passive income and consumption. Man, I see her face in my mind, I can't remember her name. She had wanted to recruit me in a pyramid numismatic gold coin business, but she ended up inspiring me to do the Marcela Bonds and indirectly, what I'm doing today. Flipping houses, Remodelling and renting out foreclosed homes we bought, and even branching out to ICM Bonds and adding to my Marcela Bonds.

Hinay-hinay lang gud. It will get there.  I tried DXN MLM selling coffee and what have you. Didn't make too much but at age 19 and making around P5,000 in 2002, that was pretty good. I think. I also tried skin botanicals MLM, but all soaps. Not much, around an extra P2000 tops a month. still not bad for a 19yo. My Marcela Bonds grew from P5,000 to P8,000 in 8 years that I left it alone. P375 a year, without doing anything. Nothing to write home about but still, effortless money is effortless money. It could've made more probably if I was there managing the POs and collecting but its ok.  I did add a little bit to Marcela Bond and started an ICM bond too. Still ahead of the banking and savings rate. It will take time to grow but its still earning passive income.

All the rent houses we have are passive income too...after the initial 2-3 months worth of work(meaning supervising the contractor). This leaves me with time to spend with Ryan, keep house, call Pinas every other day, call Auntie, cousins telebabad...and have time to dedicate to our HomeVestors franchise and flipping houses. Yep, also time for going back to school to get my second major. hehehe ! Bahala ug tag 2-3 subjects ra. Hinay-hinay, mahuman ra lagi ni puhon. On the upside...I get to go to Bohol every year. Twice on a good year. hehe ! I'm happy.

I guess if Mama's risk tolerance is 2 from a range of 1-10, mine is around 5-6....sir Balong's is at 10. IMHO. those things he's talking about scare me stiff. I'm likely to lose everything.

Hopefully, someday, when Ryan and I get old, we won't have thesame problems my Mama and Papa have with just relying on their savings and getting into tight spots over medical bills and emergencies. I'm praying we'll have enough to be comfy for the rest of our lives and have some left over for the kids to fight over our graves ahahaah !   bahala ug dli diamond coffin. kanang kahoy ra gud para fertilizer apil. :-)

Igo ra gyod ko maka save enough for my yearly recreation (going home and spending-spree for a month hehehe). Sa tinuod I'd rather spend my money for something worthwhile (helping family, taking care of my house in Bohol, sending nephews, nieces and others to school, travel, food, etc) before it's too late kay hadlok ko naay mahitabo nako unya sayang kung di magamit akong hinaguan. Maka-save baya ko ( and I consider that self-investment) since most of my ameneties are already free. Not much but more than I need.

My Auntie calls this "Investing in Memories" kini dili jud makawat. Kami sa akong bana, we try to conserve and live way below our means. We forgo the toys, the bigger house, nicer cars to conserve our money. But when it comes to family, our parents (both) and neices and nephews, as long as reasonable, then we don't get miserly.  Of course, we treat ourselves too . A quick cruise to Mexico, my yearly trip to visit Mama and Papa in Bohol, his trips to Florida.  What's the point in getting rich quick if you're miserable when you can be very comfortable and happy instead. :-)

Philippines erects wall to obscure view of slums
THE MESH REPORT STAFF MAY 2, 2012 COMMENTS (0)
MANILA, Philippines â€" Delegates attending an international conference in the Philippines capital may not see what they came to discuss: abject poverty.

A makeshift, temporary wall has been erected across a bridge on a road from the airport to downtown Manila that hides a sprawling slum along a garbage-strewn creek.

Presidential spokesman Ricky Carandang defended the wall’s installation, saying Thursday “any country will do a little fixing up before a guest comes.”

He expressed hope that this week’s annual meeting of Asian Development Bank Board of Governors, which includes finance ministers and senior officials from 67 member states, will show the Philippines is open for business. The lending institition, which is headquartered in its own walled compound in Manila, aims to cut poverty in the Asia-Pacific region.

“We need to show our visitors that Metro Manila is orderly. We owe it to ourselves,” said metropolital Manila chief Francis Tolentino.

“I see nothing wrong with beautifying our surroundings. We are not trying to keep the poor out of the picture,” he said.

There was no immediate comment from ADB.

The Philippine Communist Party recalled that former first lady Imelda Marcos â€" notorious for ostentatious lifestyle â€" was ridiculed for trying to hide squatter colonies. She erected similar whitewashed walls along the route of foreign visitors to the Miss Universe pageant held in Manila in 1974, and other international events.

“The government should face reality. If they don’t, how will they know the problem, how will they solve the problem,” said Renato Reyes, secretary general of the largest left-wing group Bayan. “By covering the truth, they lose the energy or intention to resolve the problem.”

About a third of Manila’s 12 million residents live in slums, and a third of 94 million Filipinos live below the poverty line of $1.25 a day. Overall, more than half the population in Asia remains poor.

unsa man idea ani ???? If you don't see them they don't exist ? instead nga ang kwarta paingon sa wall, maau pa paingon sa livelihood training programs. pastilan jud lang...saonz...easy fix ra gihuna2 sa mga balbal jud.

Balong, you and I can agree about Obama. They need to get out and fast. Being very educated, he could have done a whole lot of good but no, he never takes personally responsibility. He's a great campaigner but sucks as a leader. They bash George Bush as being dumb but at least they were classy and at least, Bush made sure America was safe. Under Obama, there were already 3 attempts on American soil and counting !

Even a fellow democrat Clinton. At least, when the economy was lagging, they opted to promote vacationing within the US to boost the internal US tourism industry rather than go overseas. They set a good example for their people. With the Obamas, they remind me so much of a good number of Philippine Politicians. THey are good at promising but never good on fulfilling. :-(

i was watching an anime series and the antagonist asked the hero, what he would prefer, money or power. It got me thinking, if I had power, i can grab ALL the money I could ever want....but to rise to power, I had to have SOME money.  Then I thought of Philippines politics. LOL !  Now that we are blessed enough to be comfortable and could actually make a little bit of difference through donations, I was considering opening my own charity for underprivileged children and battered women and teens. To do that, I also need to tap into my network of comfortable friends. In that train of thought, I realized that maybe, some people started out wanting to make a better world and saw politics as a vessel of power. Instead, going into politics blinded them of whatever good intentions they had  if they ever had. Appealed to their dark side and all their noble thoughts and ideas flew out the window as they got drunk with power and blinded with the promise of all the money they can ever want at the expense of the "others" that they never see from their ivory towers aka gated mansions with security guards.

Hubs and Balong,

when you think of making millions, the first thing that comes to my mind is real estate. ( Donald Trump, Robert Kiyosaki, Carlton Sheets...) Lots of people made their money elsewhere too but the easiest and most solid, in my humble opinion is real estate. Remember, in Abraham Maslow's pyramid, shelter aka housing is a basic need.

its a matter of arithmetic. Buy low, sell high. It works even in good old Bohol and its oh so simple that its easy to understand.  My first deal, we got the house at $57k, it appraised at $115, we put $25k improv on it and we rent it out for $1k/mo and pay the bank $600. No money down, full financing, including repairs and improvements. We get a check every month for doing NOTHING. really. its hard work for the 2 months your getting the deal done and renovating. After that, you just wait for your check in the mail. $300 extra after note service may be small but its still $300 you didn't lift a finger to earn. No watching the market, no reading the newspapers everyday. Most of all, if something breaks, get a hammer and fix it.Or hire someone and get a tax break via business expense. The last one I closed yesterday. got it for $49k, sold for $86k, didn't do anything to the house. just $300 of yardwork and utilities. Its not gonna make you an instant millionaire, but heck, if you've already made 6 figures for the first 3 months of the year on just 3 houses, I'm happy. :-)

Bitaw, not trying to put you down Balong. Just MicroCap is just too darn complicated and so much room for error, fraud and speculation. Its too scary for most people. Its something you can't touch or hold or be happy to hang on to because you never know how the value will do on the day to day.  If becoming a millionaire is your goal, Real Estate is a much safer and better bet. Why else does cable TV have so many shows involving fixing and flipping houses ? :-)

America may be good to most of us who's making a life here but nothing compares to our childhood hometown. For me, its Tagbilaran. For my Papa, its Tangub City. We will all crave for the close knit community that we had that can never be replaced. Specially here.

Ms. Isles, that was a very good read.

That actually got me thinking, why does Gabriela not do more ? They always get into an uproar about the silliest things sometimes but why not this ?  But then again,  a lot of Gabriela members are strong, independent women who might be mistresses themselves. LOL. Yep, I do agree that the current set-up in the Philippines is very beneficial to a guy. Specially the ones who don't care much for the kids but only for themselves. Sad but true.

I have also sen myself in where the women here are always slapping or punching a man to me it is shocking as it is something in states we are told as little girls it is not lady like to hit or slap a man it shows that we want provocation.

Abuse comes in many forms....not just physical there is emotional as well as financially left behind and abused....Where did HNU conduct they're survey and who did this survey? Females? Males or other? I had never heard of this survey happening.....??

You're right, abuse does come in many forms.

I think men are most likely to do physical abuse but women probably excel in mental and emotional abuse. I know quite a few, even here, that do that to their husbands. I know one Filipina wife repeatedly tell her American husband to "shut up, you make the least amount of money of all the husbands in the group."  Not verbatim but in various wordings, in front of her friends. Me, being one of the "friends".

When I was in Bohol, most of what I hear are Men abusing women and both men and women abusing kids. Their own, or even neices, nephews, heck even students. Maybe because I hang around DSWD too much (since Mama works there) or just how things worked out. When I was attending BWS, some of the corporal punishments our teachers subjected us to were considered abuse. Punching us in the tummy when I was in grade 1. Slapping our faces, making us sit on the trash can (me and a few others), hitting our bottoms with books, enough to make us jump a couple feet forward. Making us stand for an hour in the middle of the quadrangle in the heat of the sun, where all other students can see us and poke fun at us.

Heck, my little brother was in grade 3, he and 7 or 8 others had to undergo counselling in Cebu. There was even one of the others who would get a fever and start shaking when he saw the teacher. Another one peed himself. It was that bad.

When I was in college, one of my closest friends left her boyfriend even when she was pregnant with his child. Their families pressured them to marry but she never succumbed. She said he almost choked her once and that was enough.

Anyway, I could go on and on and on. The point is, there are other things we all can use to get our points across without creating physical, mental and emotional damage.  I can say that surviving my BWS Elementary years with some of the more brutal teachers made me tougher and better to able to deal with the crazy world. But I know for sure that I can't say that about a lot of the other kids, specially the ones in my brother's class.

Just my simplistic thoughts :

Bohol is an island with groups of little islets around it.

We have a LOT of shallow waters

We already have a LOT of sea weeds.

If we can harness what we have naturally to create jobs, improve livelihood and alleviate poverty without robbing future generations, then what's the harm ?

I guess its just the ways and means that the "system" that goes into it is the problem. There's no utopian method as most, if not all, will have to sacrifice *something* to get whatever the optimum desirable outcome is. Usually the max profit at the expense of the naive and vulnerable population which will be easily taken advantaged of.  :-(
#48
Ang pulitiko hugaw bisan unsaon ug bali2. Hapit nasad election. bugno nasad ni. pastilan.

Just thinking. If the time they dedicate to attack their opponents , they could instead, spend to think up improvements and innovations to make life better for their people, our world would be so much better.

I'm so sick of politicians both in the US and in Pinas. They're all thesame. Unfortunately, due to the popularity system, we get to be governed by who can best play the game and not who is really capable or willing to be of best benefit to their people. Just sad really.

Firstly, I think we should address the issue of safety and security. Tourists need the peace of mind that if they wander around after dark, there is a close to none possibility of something bad happening to them. Case in point, I myself am married to a person of another race. There are a lot of places in Bohol and the Philippines at large that I would not feel safe for my husband to be out and about wandering with me. Even my parents advise me against it. I take that to heart because they know more about the current situation that I do.

If the crime rate was lower and there are stricter punishment for even petty crimes, I think Bohol would be more attractive to tourists. What good are beautiful places if you risk life, limb and money ? Think about it, I'm sure there are pretty places in Libya but I don't think people are clamoring to go there because of the political situation.

2.) Cleanliness - Sometimes we are pretty good about it and sometimes not. There were times when I visited and I can feel proud about Tagbilaran, and other times...well, it gets pretty bad. Plastic bags flying all over the place and stink like you wouldn't believe around the city center. It would be nice if it would be pretty consistent on the cleanliness part. :-)

3.) Roads and Infrastructure - We have so many beautiful sights, sounds and things to experience around the island. When my in-laws were in Bohol in 2004, I wanted to take them to see all of them. Unfortunately, the land travel alone was exhausting. Despite the fact that we were in an SUV with pretty good shock absorbers, It was still bumpy. How can our tourists really enjoy our sights and tourists spots if they are exhausted before they even get there ? If they are nice, energetic and happy, they would spend our money. That would spell more income to those tourist spots and the souvenir vendors and even the food vendors too.

4.) CLEAN Bathrooms and Rest Areas -  Ahhh....the call of Nature. Pretty self explanatory.

5.) VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER, AMEX - It may cost businesses a processing fee but in the end, places that will accept more flexible forms of payment get more income. In 2006, my close childhood friends and I went to Tawala, in the Alona beaches for just a hang-out night. It was my treat. Unfortunately for me, I underestimated how much things cost and didn't bring enough cash. Well, long story short, we found a bar/resto that accepted my visa debit card and that place made a good chunk of change feeding and serving us girly drinks that night. :-P

6.) Reasonable Island Tour Packages - Just because we're catering to tourists, doesn't mean we have to suck them dry. We want them to come back and bring their friends with them too. If we present a great value for the a really low price, we can even boost our local tourism and keep our foreign tourists coming back. Case in point, if it costs $100/pax for a 3 day Bohol tour and thesame for a 3 day Hong Kong tour....hmmmm....do you think most foreign tourists would go back to Bohol or just not make the extra flight and stay in Hong Kong ? (You know, bigger city, bigger airport, more things to see...etc etc etc ).... I know for a fact that in 2010, Hollywood Day tour including lunch was $65, thesame day tour around Bohol cost $80. I think I can safely say for a lot of people, touring Hollywood has so much more history and things to see vs our little island, as beautiful as it may be.

7.) Food and Grub - My mother-in-law ordered Spaghetti Marinara for dinner in Bohol Tropics back in 2004. To her surprise, her spaghetti came with squids and shrimps and other unidentifiable seafood-like objects. I can't help but laugh..."Marinara" kinda like "marine" ? LOL. For a first time asian traveller like her ( She's Canadian but has lived in the US most of her life), It didn't seem so funny. She was hungry and ordered the safest food, SHE THOUGHT, was on the menu. Some pasta with tomato sauce and cheese. Afterall, Marinara sauce is almost plain tomato sauce with some spices.  Things have gotten better since then, though. Garden Cafe is always a  good choice, but we need more places like it. Jjs, Payag, Bohol Tropics, Mira Villa, to name a few, have really awesome food...but for the most part, our foreign tourists need a guide to navigate the menu sometimes.

8.) Boat tours/Island Hopping (just bohol) Tours - same as number 6. Reasonable prices. Also should be safe. :-)

I think the tourist attraction facilities needs to be improved first before going into somethig else.
It must be able to give a great impression to tourist so they will be wanting to go visit again.
And one big factor is convenience. A place to eat, sleep and process credit cards. I myself don't like to carry cash all the time for convenience and safety.

Make comfort rooms more hygeinic not like shanty rest rooms. What I notice is that restrooms do t have any toilet papers, paper towels etc.. Feels so dirty.

I am with you about more neutral foods , credit cards and clean restrooms. :-)

Unfortunately, have some errands to do so I'll post more later.

just how bad can it get between husband and wife that murder/suicide becomes an option?

This really saddened me when I opened my email and saw this article. With the economy in the US the way it is, millions of people have lost their jobs and people have gotten desperate. Several suicides have been reported connected to the downhill spiral of the economy in the past couple of years. We will never know what their troubles were but I hope they find peace wherever they are... and hope those kids grow up in a loving healing home wherever they end up in.

Dili baya sad David. Sa akong mga tuig diri sa US, daghan2 sad ko nasinati nga mga pinay nga nagkalain2. Kaning 21 pata nilarga, barkadista pa gyud, dali ra ta mingawon , mangita gyud ug barkada.

Pareha ra gud pud sa sea man, mawala ug 6-8 months, usahay 18months. Ang ilaha pud, sa uyab pa, mobisita ang lalaki ug every six months or every year ba kaha. Basin lahi siguro nga level ang pagkasinabot. Sa akong uyab nga pinoy, sige ra mi ga uban2, suod mi kaayo pero karon nga mo lantaw kos kani-adto, gamay ra man diay mi ug things in common sa akong ex. Lahi mi ug trip nga music, lahi mi ug mga tripping nga laag...pero ni last pud ug hapit 3 years.

Ang akong bana ug ako, nagkita mi in person, nag exchange emails, nya kada gabii chat. ni bisita siya ug kaduha sa among panag-uyab for 2 weeks each, nya 7 months after we met, nagpakasal mi ug huwes.

Together pa japn sila ron, 7 years later.

Pero pag abot diri, wala man sad ni work out.Naa koy nailhan mga 4 kabuok nga ingani ilang sugilanon. Gani, wala ra kaabot ug 5 years ilang Age gap sa bana, respetado sad sila sa ato, unya tarong pud ilang mga bana diri. Wala lang gyud nagkasinabot.Saon ta man.

1.) In 2003, I was still living in Bohol with my parents and our arrangement with my husband was 3 weeks in Bohol, and then he works in the US 6 weeks.

Apparently, kitang mga Pinay is known as LBFM...little brown ..effing machines.

2.) Among families that have a US Army, US Marine or US Navy, luoy sad ta.  Kun ikaw dili nurse, ma brought up jud ug ahat kung unsa imong background. Kay ngano man ?

Dili sad ka makabasol...daghang Yaya/helper kung adlawan, buring diay to nig day-off.

Pastilan.....

Hala....good night na. Food for thought rani.

1.  Ninang nako/best friend sa akong Mama in college - her husband and her both make over US$100k a year, combined household income of probably in the US $300ks.

activities ug mo-uli sa bohol :   ligo dagat hantud ma-itom, sutokil, mo-uli sa bukid. Nipalit nuon ug pilang hektarya sa bukid, nya gabuhi ug kanding, nananum ug saging. Invite-ton sad ming mga kinugos mo adto para magtapok2. Daghan pud jamo ug orchid nga siya ra pud alaga. Kun mo laag sa BQ, ang panit ra gyud tawn imong ilhan nga abroad diay to kay simple ra man jud kaau. DILI pa gyud slang mo binisaya. mo-uli kada tuig, ang duha ka anak kamao pud mo binisaya.

------------- VS -------------

Silingan namo nga nurse, ang bana factory worker tig-gama ug sweaters etc. Bao pilay sweldo. (dili jud pud siguro mo lapas ug US $100k)   Kun mo sulpot sa Penaflor , lupig pay bagyo, slang pa kaau mo binisaya. Dili na mo-simba sa among kapilya ...aw, gamay raman pud tong kapilya gud namo nya igang ra pud siguro. MAglakaw2, ang mga sanina, mura jud tawn pud ug gi advertise nga gikan jud ug abroad... ex "i heart ny" nga tshirt...skullcap nga  oakley (igang man ta sa ato buyag)...long sleeve nga tshirt nga jersey sa NFL team...HAHAY

" sus , favoritism jud kaau tong dog show.."

Naningkamot man jud nga magpabilib. Kuwang2 siguro sila. Alanganin.

Ngano man jud mo-gasto ug tag $9.99 nga Victorias Secret nga naa may tag $4 sa outlet mall, preha rang lotiona, preha rang lipaya nig abot ! ;D

Dili man kinahanglan nga mapurdoy ta ug magpuno2 sa box. Ang 2 ka box pun-on nako in 6-8 months. pa tigi2, palit kung naay sale sa mga butang nga magamit sa Bohol. Hinlabi na after thanksgiving ug after Christmas. :D

Kun tan-awon, abi sad kung kinsang dato-a nig abot sa box, pero gaan sa imong bulsa, gaan sad sa dughan nig panghatag (kay wa man jud na napurdoy ), naa pay kwarta mabilin pang beach/tapok2.

Kung maayo sad ka mo plano, naa PAL from LA to MNL nga tag $600, pero kinahanglan paliton 6-8 months in advance. O dibs...savings kaau.  ;)

I'll  hold you to that... :-)

Taho is just tofu pudding with caramel and tapioca. The Vietnamese makes a decent comparable product called Tofu Pudding. Not as good....maybe its the dust and grim in Tagbilaran that gives it its distinct flavor ? LOL  8)

I can't say anything about the coffee places since i don't frequent it much. Actually, I haven't been to any in my last 2 trips. PIcs of my high school barkada look good in FB though.

My hitlist aka craving foodwise

Jjs Seafood Village - Patatim, chop suey, pancit Laureate and fried bread

Port of Tubigon - muron

Streetfood - Tempura, Taho and green mangoes with spicy uyap

ICM - ramen from rai rai ken, halo2  and lemongrass tea from Bee Farm

Fiesta Food - lechon from Leda Saco, their dinuguan and inatayan is yummy too.

darn....i'm getting hungry and its 2am.  :(

Most of the instant messengers have a webcam option. Back when I was 14-15, Yahoo messenger and mIRC was very popular with my friends. Both of those have a webcam and voicechat option just like skype. Free too. Then there's AIM and ICQ.

These days, the new laptops have built in webcams and mics so you don't have to get them separately. All you need for good communication is a good internet connection.....sheeshhh even facebook has pretty good chat.

Oh...facebook is prolly the best "life" sharing site, from photos to vids to notes...name it, it can probably be shared there. I found more than 50+ cousins there...some that I haven't seen for 15 or so years. I even found an old college buddy of mine which I haven't talked to for 10 years. My uncles who are still actively working as seamen use t-mobile and they send their wives a magicjack. With a DSL connection in Bohol, its like making a local call.

Its nice most of them have magicjack too, so its cheaper for me to call everyone. Including Mama and Papa.  ;D ;D ;D 8)

We also have to remember too " It is always greener at the other side..."  and "different strokes for different folks"

When I am at the height of my loneliness, I open facebook and see my childhood barkada with their pictures all over Bohol, the beaches, the caves, the climbs, the hike trails....

When I was growing up, I see my cousins stateside going to Disney and playing in the snow, swimming in their backyard pools, doing all the things that are not even available in the entire Philippines.

Lord knows what they think when they look at my life. Sometimes, I feel jealous of some of my old friends who's got children since after 6 years of marriage, I don't have any...and then, I get told that they feel jealous of me, that I get to drive to where I want and visit Bohol once or twice a year.

Some people enjoy life in the US and wish to petition everybody they can over. Some people absolutely hate it.  While I'd love to bring my parents and my brother over, specially my parents so they can have better medical care, my best friend, who makes more money than I do, a very successful RN would go home to Bohol in a heartbeat. No plans of bringing any family over. The highlight of her year is the annual 6 week stay in Bohol.

In the end, the choice of going abroad depends on the life a person wants to lead. I can't see a person who loves the warm sunshine, the beach and island life too much as thriving in a place like say..hmmm...Alaska...or even Minnesota in the winter .No amount of money can do that  ;)   Nor can I see a scholar, intent on furthering his or her knowledge be content to stay in our beautiful little island. mental and/or financial fulfillment just isn't there. ( Unless he/she is a marine biologist with a dive certificate )   :D

Gener, growing up, my father was gone 6-10 months at a time. When I was very little, my mother said he was gone as long as 18 months out to sea just to save money to complete their house and pay off the lot that they got to build their house on.

I am away from my parents and brother. I am blessed that I have my husband, but he too is gone sometimes 2 weeks out of the month. He is American but works for Cathay in Hong Kong since airlines here in the US don't pay their pilots very much. In a sense, he is like an OFW, same amount of time away from home, but just in 2 week increments.  :)

I don't have kids but I grew up with an OFW dad.

If I did have children, I would encourage them to go where their heart leads them. When I was 16, I got admitted to UP Diliman Pre-law and wanted to take archeology as my minor then switch over. I've always read about Egypt and Knossos and I've always wanted to go. My father told me that if I ever wanted a husband, kids and a family, my life as an archeologist would not work. He made me weigh it on my own, the important things that I really wanted to have further down in life. So I abandoned the notion and took Pre-law.

A few years later, I found myself on my last year of Accounting at HNU. I asked my parents if I could take French and Japanese classes for the summer since it was offered. They asked me why and I said, well, after I graduate, I'd like to become a flight attendant for KLM or Cathay and take my MBA online, or do distance learning. I've always wanted to travel and see...well...Egypt, Greece and Rome. So my father, who has traveled the world in his 20 some years of being a Seaman told me that if I pursued this path, I will forget time and before I know it, I've seen the places I've wanted to see but grow old without a husband or kids.

I dwelled on this, but took the classes anyway. He gave me a choice and gave me the money to study.

A while later, through luck or destiny, I found myself married to a dapper young man and moved to a new country. Two years later my move, my father got sick, lost his income and now has solely to rely on my mother. Sometimes, with a little help from me. Not all the time, but I'm sure all the sugar free supplies I send in the balikbayan boxes go a long way, specially glucerna.

Had my father discouraged me about going abroad, I probably wouldn't have worked and studied so hard when I was young. If he just gave me a subscription to National Geographic and then told me to stay put, I don't know if I would have had the drive or still be sitting in Bohol and reading books.

I probably wouldn't have aimed for science high school and probably wouldn't have studied so hard to graduate near the top of my class because I didn't aim for UP or ADMU or LSU. Its all a domino effect. Maybe it works for some kids, maybe not for others. In my case, I wanted to be in a good school, so I can have the background to go where I want to go and do what I want to do.

If Papa had said, stay pud and find a way to make a life here in the Philippines...well, Lord knows how hard our lives  would've been after he got sick. Or if he would still be alive, seeing that sometimes, Glucerna and Ensure is all he could eat/drink.  If I was still there, I certainly could not afford Glucerna, or sugar free cookies or sugar free chocolates...I know some are just creature comforts but it sure makes life so much bearable for someone who's partially blind, diabetic and needs assistance 24/7.

I sure miss Papa...  :)

Why Bohol? Our kids are still well behaved until maybe they reached highschool. Too much knowledge is dangerous...opening the portal of curiosity.

I'm not Pro nor against it since I don't know EXACTLY what they're gonna teach but I do have a theory about why Bohol.

The presence of a sizable foreign population in Panglao island might be factor. Naa mahipus sa DSWD Tagbilaran usahay mga underage nga buring, as young as 13 and 14.

On the upside, if this subject is taught by the right person, mawala ang hilas  ug hasta sad ang curiosity. If I had my way, I would put special emphasis on the STDs and the domino effects of unwanted pregnancy, highlighting physical, social and psychological effects. For a society like ours, SOCIAL implications would probably be the highest on my list.  For my STD lesson, I'd probably show a  very graphic illustration of what a gonorrhea stricken or syphilis stricken penis or vagina looks like.

On the otherhand....if ang mo handle or ang mo tudlo magdala ug hilas, the lectures would be very vague and mysterious, it would probably cause the kids to be ever more curious and then it would be a disaster simply put. Naa bag-o past time atong kabataan..... (tuktuk tawn mo )

This all depends on the teachers.

Did they say who will teach them ?   Hopefully, specially trained individuals who really do know how to teach this subject and who knows how to answer 11 and 12yo questions honestly and informatively....dli lang kay bisan kinsa nalang. Mao na ron.

Hahay....knowing our dear pinas, murag mahulog nga bisan kinsa nalang pa teach-on, no extra training.  Lets hope not but knowing how things work, its leaning that way.  :(

Maghilak nalang tawn gud akong Mama.

Its nice to think of having long life....but think of the implications, its only fun if the people you love are still around.

bahahahahaha! You are testing my palate, my dear. I am hungry now.
I see that you have keen interest in spicy food.

I should recommend you take your husband to a Sri Lankan Restaurant and ask for 'Kerala-Style Curry Tilapia'

he he he!

PS. Make sure to ask for extra yogurt.

Lorenzo, the extent of my foodie-ness does not extend to my husband so I enjoy these jaunts with the girls. Although he survived on my Indian and Mediterranean week overdrive... no comment of Persian week but he choked it down. Poor guy...

I haven't seen a Sri Lankan Resto yet, Houston should have one of those. I'll go search for one...hehehe ! thanks !
